We werent losing to an al qaeda that was bigger or better, but they had won a war of per sings because they were perceptions thaws they were able to create an incredible lack of confidence in the iraqi people. Thats what isis has done. Theyre messing with dams. They have done very deft battlefield tactics using not just terrorism but the big suicide bombs that shakes the confidence of iraqi forces, and then on top of that they use this very effective Information Warfare capacity to use social media and even leverage our own tv coverage to create not just an iraq or syria but across the region and the world this sense that they are everywhere and doing everything and have the momentum. Which they arent. And frankly they really dont because there arent enough of them and they arent organized enough. They have a really good machine that says things that helps them, and then for some reason the iraqis just wont fight. What is that . Why is that . How do you fix that . Well, thats exactly right. And of course if you say the iraqis wont fight its unfair to say the sergeant or the soldier or the trench wont fight because were not the next to them. But armies are about competence. Its about confidence in their leadership which clearly is still less than what we need in iraq. But also confidence in where the nation is going. Because isis has struck a chord particularly among the sunnis, they dont have a seat at the table with the government of iraq and then the situation of syria, bleeding over, i think that the lack of confidence by the individual soldier in the iraqi army is severely shaken and its going to take real time and partnership to rebuild that. The problem before, according to our leaders was relationship with nouri almaliki. The former leader over in iraq wouldnt bring the two sides to the table didnt make his the other sect feel like it was part of the government, therefore they made a change and were hoping for bigger and Better Things out of this administration do they have it . I think its probably better but the reality is once you dismantle the leadership of an organization, that happens quickly. Building it back and Building Confidence takes a lot of time because trust is based on experience so they have to see their leaders and trust them, and i dont think they have had enough time or yet obviously built enough trust. The relationship that may be the wrong word built with iran because of our similar interests, do you see that as a dangerous thing or how do you see that playing out . I think it as a complex thing. Has similar interests to us inside iraq but very different interests from us across the region, in many cases, and their nuclear efforts. So i think its a complex issue. The other part, though, is if you look at what isis is facing, theyre not facing a unifyed effort. Theyre facing a group of different countries, all of which have not yet been able to align themselves in a common effort, and i think until they do that its going to be very difficult to create the kind of bulwark against this kind of movement that is needed. And is it going to be possible to find a place where our air strikes will happen the Iraqi Ground Forces to the free we can get something accomplished and push back isis . I think our airstrike will help but wont be decisive theyve build the confidence of the iraqi forces on the ground. Thats the biggest part.
