Health care, in my view, is a human right. And we have got to pass a medicare for all singlepayer system. Donald trump thinks wall street build america. Ordinary middleclass americans build america. My dad used to have an expression. Joe, a job is about a lot more than a paycheck. Its about dignity, respect. Its being able to look a kid in the eye and say everythings going to be okay. At the bottom line is, if we dont clearly defined were not socialist, the republicans will come at us every way we can and call us socialists. We need to put the American People in position to benefit from all these innovations in other parts of the economy. If you had a valueadded tax, even after the european level, it would generate over 800 billion in new revenue. I was six years old when the president ial candidate came to the Democratic Convention and said its time to pass the torch to a new generation of americans. That candidate was thensenator joe biden. And he subject to a lot of criticism, like Kamala Harris and others have given him. And certainly the republicans would give jim about what he did or didnt do in office. Its the fundamental problem he has. He is about the past, not about the future. As a republican and granted im a partisan republican i would look at where they went, and i thought they went further and further to the left. I dont think they attracted anybody new to the party. I dont think they brought in anybody else. We cant give anything away for free. I heard more of this is what we are going to do to protect Illegal Immigrants as opposed to homeless veterans, which i didnt hear a word about. Melissa i thought Eric Swalwells comment i think that was rude. Harris about the torch . Melissa to attack him on age. Harris what swallowed that there was interesting. Hes 38 now, he was six years old then. The candidate he was talking about who actually meant the Democratic Convention in california that year was joe biden and he was weaving a little bit of history and trying to make that sting. I think they really only had one job on that stage. You that would have been great if they company that, but they have to show who can take on donald trump. And the one person who has been preaching about taking on donald trump got taken down last night. Joe biden. Which was my argument, jessica, very early on. Maybe you toughen yourself up with those in your party and go to those big events and those big occasions before this debates. Meaning joe biden. You and i have talked about that on the couch. Because this was foreseeable. Didnt know if it would become alaris, but it would be somebody. It was like a circular verbal firing squad around joe biden at one point last night. Melissa do you think . Jessica i think there were gradations of tax. I completely agree with you. I thought Eric Swalwell was rude, he was trying to get some magic moment to catalyze his ca. That didnt work. I thought it was a baseless, silly attack to make. Its not like everyone doesnt know how old the people on the stage r. Kamala harris certainly came to play, i think she was a clear winner of the evening. I think she was the Julian Castro of the night 2, he needed to up their game at up their name i. D. Im sure they will see a little bump from that. But there are things that transpire between Kamala Harris and joe biden that could be perilous for her. Its one thing to have started the conversation, it deeply hurt me when you seem to have coddled segregationists, he said thats not what he was doing. But to lay into the conversation, which is could be planted. There was social media to back that up, picture of her as a young girl, completely adorable and no doubt as an american, as a democrat, the idea of opposing busing is not a great thing, and its something he has had to answer for. But it seemed premeditated and opportunistic. Shes going after the demographic that joe biden has now on his side. Thats older voters and africanamerican voters, especially africanamerican women. These are people who have known joe biden for decades, they trust him, they say would barack obama have picked a cryptoracist as his vp . She says she doesnt think hes a racist, but melissa you think he came out as now that . Or that she damage herself with those attacks . Jessica i think will become located. Shes already doing cleanup on the private insurance thing. Dagen she raised her hand and said, no, no, no, she refuted it almost immediately and backtracked again this morning saying, i thought it meant giving up my own private insurance. Jessica it is personal, and sharing personal stories which a number of them did, especially when it comes to health care were emphasizing that it did feel a personal attack, but she handled it well. Harris its nuance compared to what im hearing today from other people. Jessica when you played the clip, i think its important when he said i left a Good Law Firm to be a public defender. Harris i get it. Jessica its not taking a shot, its emphasizing his record and where he has been on civil rights. Thats what john lewis was talking about when he defended him. You see in the forefront there and obviously Julian Castro now but i was watching video earlier where Kirsten Gillibrand and Kamala Harris were walking through the reporters. Anyway, your thoughts . Jason President Trump is absolutely right. What you saw, the bending over backwards of getting free things, Free Health Care to Illegal Immigrants, and no discussion none about veterans and homelessness. And people who are vulnerable within the american community. Ive got to tell you, i think that was absolutely wrong. I think President Trump has tapped into something, dealing with illegal immigration. You can do so in a compassionate way, but democrats make in a legitimate argument when they say it was all donald trump. It was barack obama made all his decisions. When they ask if we want to give Free Health Care to illegal aliens, people at home say, wait, i dont have Free Health Care. Its their way of showing compassion and i think all americans are compassionate and concerned about the way that young people, children, are being treated. However, the Free Health Care for Illegal Immigrants, it started the first night, decriminalizing border crossings. And then they took it a big leap further. Its because they are pandering to latinos. The pew research center, the 2020 election will mark the first time that hispanics will be in the largest racial or Ethnic Minority Group in the electorate. What about all the other people who live here legally, who can actually vote . Talk to them. It shows the struggle of the democrats right now, when more than 70 of people like their private Employer Health insurance, and more than 70 of people think the economy is good. They are grasping at straws. Harris its interesting youre saying that, one thing that popped into my head over the course of a couple of nights, because health care came up more than once, was that line of you can keep your doctor if you want to. I think democrats, as a party, were so damaged by that broken promise. But every time they start to talk about what you can keep like, Amy Klobuchar said we will make it a choice and that requires that you believe you can keep what you have. And we are right back in that both democrats. Jessica i thought that, where joe biden shined the most was in his defense of obamacare. And extending as much coverage as possible to the most amount of people. He did something very specific. He said, i oppose any democrat or republican who comes for obamacare. Not only is a part of the obamabiden administration, but saying this is the law of the land, it has higher popularity than ever before. I know there isnt an alternative to it that people think is workable. Thats whats important. As far as the coverage for Illegal Immigrants, they asked specifically about the government plan. We need to know the details of how that works from someone like joe biden, because if you are keeping Obamacare Harris or how to pay for it. Jessica obamacare doesnt cover illegals in this country. So i need to know how that works. Jason thats the thing, i was in the audience. I was sitting at the seat of the union when barack obama actually said, obamacare will not cover people that are here illegally. Thats when, famously, representative joe wilson said you lie on that particular topic, it created a moment. For joe biden to raise his hand and say, of course melissa i think its interesting you didnt have moderators push back on any of that stuff. Its interesting that the apparent leak at umass, they didnt ask any math questions or any paper questions. Jessica they tried with sanders. Melissa you cant have open borders and free stuff. You can have one or the other. The waters going to have to get tired because we just cant afford it. You cant have dessert for every single meal. This is not possible. Dagen when you have a governor of the most populous state in the nation, one of the blueest, trying to put a cap on the expansion of health care and Health Insurance in that state for Illegal Immigrants come they had to cap it at age 25 because of the cost of it. Because it will bankrupt the state and they cant handle it. Melissa and they have a lot of money. Have a great surplus. Harris a generational question. Because when you talk about millennials and the mandate that has now gone on, people dont want to pay for something they arent going to use. It looks like, its protected, in 2020 that the largest generation in the history of america is going to be millennials. So they force the table for this is particularly important, i think. I hear what youre saying about joe biden. I look to some of those others, though, to speak of. Maybe they dont want the same type of health care, may be health care illegal aliens has a different meaning to them. I didnt get any of that last night because there was only people on the stage. Jessica it is my cohort, and part of the millennial generation. I can tell you that we might not vote in as high numbers as people in the over 50 crowd, which is something that harris but you will get older. Jessica we absolutely will. I think voting is the most important thing you can do. What Elizabeth Warren did so well on night 1, youre making a moral argument about the people in this country already. We dont have an open borders policy, first of all, so were talking about the 11 million to 30 Million People here already. Walking around, we see them outside here. They are part of our communities. When they get sick, what happens . You can either pay for it on the front end or on the back end area and i guarantee there will be more melissa do you feel then with that kind of policy that you bear part of the responsibility for the people that are dying on their journey to this country . Because when you put out their Free Health Care for people who are inside the border, you incentive more people like that poor man and his daughter to make the trip. Because it is more worth risking your life for Free Health Care if you just get over that border. So you bear responsibility when you put freebies on the inside. Jessica as a nation right now we dont have enough people to fill the job melissa i absolutely want more people. Jessica i dont feel that i be irresponsibility for that. I dont think this people are coming here because they heard they can get Free Health Care. Theyre coming here for the promise of the American Dream. They are coming here because their governments are melissa those are separate things. The first one, if youre coming here for a better life and better economic opportunity, you should not be risking your life for that. Its not worth giving up your life jessica and turning people away because a metering policy . Harris what i heard some of the candidates saying is that some of the American Dream should include Free Health Care. In effect, that becomes the african dream. Its all kind of part of one thing. You are putting your life and your money and your health and health care into the hands of a politician. And a bureaucrat. They get to make the decision. Not you. This is the central argument against it. And they need some intellectual honesty. She had gone to her grandmothers funeral. There were questions readily. But that lyft driver took her to hatch park, and then there was another person who met her in another vehicle. Police cleared that lyft driver very early on, and then the question began, what happened after that . And police told us that she might have some connection with a home that sometimes Brandon Airbnb and its basements, and they were focusing in on that homeowner, as a person of interest. As early as just this time yesterday. And word of interest, that News Conference in the next hour from now, 1 30 p. M. Eastern. We will wait and see what police chief mike brown will tell us. What was the other part of her life that we didnt know about . There was evidently activity on her on one of her social media sites that also raised some eyebrows yesterday. But hopefully at the end of the day we find her. We had a horrific situation at the university of utah about a year ago. My time frame may be off, where there was a problem. We had the Elizabeth Smart case. We had some famous cases out there in utah, unfortunately. Hopefully this one will end well. But its based on what we are here and now, it may not. Harris melissa, what i thought was interesting, we carried that News Conference live on our hour yesterday. When he was asked if the person of interest, the home under the airbnb, are they cooperating . He was very careful to not say yes or no. He said he had spoken with detectives. Thats an interesting part of this as well that i want to know about. Very much so. The interview that went by with sandra smith before this show came on, they didnt release very much information and that at all. They have been very careful, very guarded, to the fact that they are about to come out and have a News Conference, a lot of people are watching that very closely because they obviously have a lot of information. They are keeping a very close to the vest, and this is we will see if it ends up being one of those cases where there are important lessons for young women out there. Everywhere. Harris young people. One thing, digging and i know both our networks have been covering this. Its interesting to me that they have given out so many details yesterday in that News Conference, which was kind of uncharacteristic, and to see the police chief kind of choke up in his throat. Ask him about this yesterday, because it brought me to tears watching. Because he had just talked with mackenzies dad, greg. And with those conversations had been like, i cant even imagine in a Wider Community what its like to want to police chief. Dagen every parent, every sibling, every grandparent, every individual watching this has an emotional connection in the sense that if you havent experienced loss like this then you can still relate to the grief. Its the not knowing, and the knowing, any death is hard to digest but one that is tragic in nature harris but we dont know yet. Dagen im just saying, a death that is tragic or sudden or even violent, not knowing any of the details, it hits you in a different way and it hits you much harder. Melissa it also speaks to the role of technology in our lives these days, in the sense that you can pinpoint exactly where she was. She had so much control over her life in terms of getting a lyft, calling her parents. All the things that we think of as parents, i feel so much better than my child has a cell phone. You know where they are, you can reach them, you can talk to them. But it can protect you. Thats maybe the false sense that people get with the technology, there comes so much more insight. The police have so much more information then they would have in the past, being able to track where her phone was and where she was sending messages. And then being able to recreate her past history. You are more likely to get caught, but you are not more likely to be saved on the other end. Thats what it feels like. Harris one thing the police chief and told me was they were trying to drill down on whether or not she had devices that people who were close to her might not have known about. Almost like a phantom existence, a remote existence. Jason again, we are unfortunately about to find out. But based on the Police Activity on the reports we are getting, at least ive seen from the local media there in salt lake, theres a great deal of worry. When you are digging in the backyard, when youre looking for a mattress, and when the s. W. A. T. Has now convened and put somebody has apprehended somebody, this has all gone down. Hopefully now we can find her and put the parents, give them some relief. Hopefully we can find her life. I hope thats the case. I hope. If you are downtown, you go a little bit south and a little bit to the east, in between downtown and the university of utah you have this facility here. You are going to have a variety of different Law Enforcement involved. Salt lake city pd is a very large police force. You also have salt lake county, they would inevitably be involved. I dont know whether any of the fbi or federal folks are involved, but this was clearly a Salt Lake City pd operation. Melissa can i ask you . You mentioned Elizabeth Smart before. Thats one of those cases i think we all remember, from having been in news. That was one of those cases where you did not think there could possibly be a good outcom outcome. Jason no, my wife and i literally there were times where you would go hike in the hills trying to find it, it ended up she was pretty close to downtown salt lake. But ive got to give credit to the smart family who just a day after day kept going out there and saying we think shes alive, and then she was. The emotion in utah and i think, across the country that Elizabeth Smart had actually survived this, it was absolutely stunning. And that story is inspirational, when you see somebody who kind of looks like Elizabeth Smart. Beautiful, blondehaired woman. It looks like elizabeth, youve got to give some hope they are. Because we all thought that was impossible. She somehow survived it. This case seems to be a bit different in that she is going to certain places in the middle of the night. Melissa what is this University Like . Whats this Community Like you . Jason utah is technically the youngest given the unit. We have the largest population, the university of utah is about 30,000 students. A lot of people commute into that school. They will live at home and just commute in. They take tracks or what not to come in there. But its a wonderful university. Our son graduated from the university of utah. Its a very campus. I think it provides a great education. But you hate it when you hear the students who are running into such problems. Harris we have not heard from you, jessica, on this. Im curious to know what you think just in terms of how this has been laid out. Weve got a lot of information very early on about her timeline. And then weve got the foldedin pictures from the air. Port surveillance cameras. Everything seems to drop off of that hatch park, which are not as familiar with as you are, jason. I just want to get your thought thoughts. Jessica im hesitant, not in this moment but as the sense that its unfolding on with the jump to any conclusions. As you said, we got a lot of information upfront and then the police they are their job, and we remain hopeful about that. What melissa said really resonated about letting Law Enforcement do their jobs. So many of these cases that do end up playing out in the public arena, everyone starts quarterbackending at themselves they think they have become the sleuth to solve it all. At the end of the day Law Enforcement usually knows what they are doing. So i remain hopeful about that. Its interesting, obviously, so much activity in utah. There was the case it is filed yesterday, a young woman who was a student who was murdered in october and had told the school and Police Officials that a man that she had gone on a she had dated him for about a month, he wasnt who she said he was and she was scared for her life. She was murdered. Her parents are suing the university. A lot of attention on utah right now. Jason there was a lot of criticism that the university of utah have in their possession information that could have prevented this on the surface i tell you im very some pathetic, because it looks like she was calling out for help needed protection. Melissa just reminded me that you are from utah, thats where you represented. Because everybody is joining us right now. I want to remind our audience. Jason this is a different case. Purposely, it sounds like if youre going to get us before team, going to a park at that time of night doesnt necessarily mean good choices. Was she going to meet with a friend . I dont know. Harris, the latest right now, Salt Lake City police are probably going to provide what is going to turn out to be a pretty substantial update, really in a matter of minutes. Also right now Salt Lake City police confirming that they have taken a person into custody in this case. They are not identifying who that person is. Its not clear if that person is a person of interest that they named who owns the home not far from here, and that home was searched. Police removed a lot of evidence from that house. There was even video that showed investigators digging in the backyard of that home, and even the medical examiner showed up to that property. Our understanding is that all of that evidence is being tested right now, and a local newspaper published a picture of a s. W. A. T. Team arrest not far from here. Police are not denying that that is related to this case, but they are not confirming that that arrest is a person of interest. Really, a rather chilling development in the story. There was activity on Mackenzie Luecks Instagram Account within the past 48 hours. Mind you, shes been missing since early last week. There was, on her accounts, or account followed another one within the past 48 hours. One thing is perhaps she had requested to follow that account in the past and that account just accepted a request. That is one possibility for triggering the activity on her account. Also, Police Looking for this mattress. Still looking for the person who received a mattress from the person of interests home. Police say their person of interest likely place this mattress on a social media website to get rid of it and someone came and picked it up. Police are still looking for the person who picked up that mattress. The big question is, what type of evidence might be on that mattress . I also talked to Salt Lake City police throughout the day today, and they say they are taking in all types of information, that people are coming out of the woodwork with all types of information or previous interactions that they alleged to have had with mackenzie, including perhaps some activity on dating websites, and police are not confirming or denying any of that. All they are saying to us as they will receive any information they have in this case and take it all in right now, harris. Harris matt, there are reports of a car that they were looking at, and other details. What are you hearing about any of the other evidence at this point . The only thing they have said as they have this person of interest and now we just have a rather Major Development that there is someone in custody right now. The news reporting that ive just read, again, not verified necessarily by fox but reported by one of the local affiliates there in Salt Lake City, ks l. Is that they took two people into custody. But on june 17th at 1 35 a. M. , police say her last text that they know about was to her mother to say that her flight had landed safely there. She was coming back from the death of her grandmother, and the funeral there. There she was in Salt Lake City, she took a lyft, and our first concentration was whether there was anything that went on without rideshare. There was not, according to police. They cleared that with the driver, he took her to a park called hatch park. Jason, how far away jason chaffetz, former congressman from utah, just happens to be with us on the couch today and it knows this area. Because this is your own. How far is hatch park from the Salt Lake City airport . Jason its probably less than 15 minutes, particularly that time of day. The proximity from downtown salt lake incar is maybe four or 5 minutes at that time of night. Its very tight and very close, if you were in downtown salt lake, may be a bit far to walk at that time but a quick ride in the car.
