Important. Rare ally in jessica tarlov. Is that right . I thought it was you. 50 50. Pretty good odds for the complete couch. You know, delight, it looks like a rainy weekend out here, maybe time for naps, i think i heard. We were talking about naps before the show started. The moms on the couch wanted a nap. 500 of the more than 2300 children separated from families at the border with mexico have been reunited with families since may, according to a white house official who says in most cases the children were reunited within 3 days of separation. Just yesterday, First Lady Melania Trump visited one of the shelters, where kids who were separated are staying. It is not clear whether those reunited with their families are being detained with them. One democrat blasting the administration. Donald trump administrations cruelty is rivalled only by the incompetence of this administration. When i went to san diego and we visited, shelters and the border patrol, you saw also they didnt have guidelines how to implement this policy and at the end, children and families are the ones suffering. Doug is live at the white house with more. Doug. Hi, melissa. Another side to the story, in a tweet the president is telling that other side. He said we must maintain strong southern border, not allow our country to be overrun by Illegal Immigrants as democrats tell phony stories of sadness and grief. Obama and others had the same pictures and did nothing about it, mr. Trump believes it to be hip hypocrisy on the border situation. President trump hillary clinton, we must have borders, if people penetrate our borders, get them out of our country. Now big open border people, a big conjob. People are suffering because of the democrats. Later this afternoon, the president will be meeting with angel families, those are americans who have lost loved ones to violence perpetrated by Illegal Immigrants. The president has not byebye sparing his republican colleagues, a call last night they were supposed to be here for congressional picnic. Chefs were grilling steaks on wednesday, mr. Trump pulled the plug on the picnic, this morning acknowledged the g. O. P. Intraparty divisions are ruining the chance for the two immigration bills under consideration. Republicans should stop wasting their time, he said, on immigration until we elect more in november, dems are playing games, have no intention to solve this decadesold problem, we can pass great legislation after the red wave, adding element of intrigue was the first ladys unannounced visit to a childrens shelter yesterday in mcallen, texas. First lady i also like to ask you how i can help these children to reunite with their families as quickly as possible . Also adding intrigue is the jacket that the first lady was wearing as she boarded the plane, i know youll have more on that. Senior Administration Official tells john roberts, 500 children who were separated from their families since the zerotolerance policy began, have been reunited with their parents, back to you. Melissa thank you, doug. Juan, to you, first. Juan this is a critical moment for the administration to get policy together. You hear criticism from congresswoman valesquez, and President Trump saying we need strong borders, that is his response all this week, even after he reversed policy. Inside the administration, we need clear lines of instruction to the people, Law Enforcement on the border, people in the courts, especially immigration courts, well see that get worked out. In terms of legislation, as we see the differences among republicans right now has led to further delay on legislation. Melissa mike mccall sounded more hopeful than juan, about republicans coming together. He called them the republican family and said they made progress last night. He made it sound like they could potentially get it done and the president is doubtful. I know well talk about the specifics of the two bills, one has been delayed, one got more votes than they thought, but it failed, it goes to show how both parties completely dropped the ball. They have. When they both could have taken up the mantel of fixing broken immigration system, both of them, when they had all three aspects of power. The house, the senate and the presidency, didnt happen during the obama administration, hasnt happened so far. The thing is what you have to do is stop with the valezquz rhetoric, this looks bad, bad policy, zero tolerance has unintended consequences. What democrats are doing, i find abhorrent, they are fanning the flames and making this an emotional issue. They will be forced to compromise and come up with legislation, if this is a big crisis, you have to find the areas where you are in agreement and you have to work with the president and republicans on administration, no questions asked if it is this kind of humanitarian crisis, which democrats claim. Lets talk about the kids and the humanitarian crisis. Jessica tarlov, dan patrick, Lieutenant Governor was on earlier today and had staggering numbers, he said he had been down to the border many times, working on this issue forever. 70 of the children and teens were talking about here, quoting him, came on their own, 40,000 this year, by themselves. Ive been to the border many times, you cant accept they are with real parents. Drug cartels make money smuggling people as they do drugs, they extort families and children are not with their families. We all agree that is at least part of the problem. I dont think anyone knows a percentage. Incredibly high. Whatever. If it is two, how do you deal they are not with their family, what do you do . We end up at an impasse. Both sides no, no, no, what would be a smart thing to do . The smart thing they are doing now, they did under obama administration, as well, open military bases to the children. Get them somewhere safe where they can watch them. There is unaccompanied minors problem and children being separated from their families. It needs to be dealt with legislatively, be in contact with consulates to talk about asylumseeking programs and how to make that work better so we dont have everyone showing up at the border trying to seek asylum at that moment. It is over 70 of applications being rejected and truth is, it is no life for anybody in guatemala. The governments being run by drug cartels. Yes. And how do you differentiate those seeking asylum . We long had that law in this country, if you feel like your life is being threatened, we have pathway, we can help you out. Yes, we should. How do you differentiate those seeking asylum and those that are not . We have to do a better job understanding why so many are leaving where they are coming from and work with countries to better understand how they can do a better job what we can do to do that, but end of the day, unaccompanied minor or child separated from his family is still a child. China solved the problem. What we have come to understand, administration had a tough week and should have seen this coming a mile away, this would look bad on them, it wasnt the right decision. We didnt need to separate families. The question now is bigger picture, what do we do about kids that are coming on their own, 70 of them, i read that, as well. Bigger picture, what do we do about immigration, make it not so political. What is right for this country . Very quickly, to add to that, you have to find areas of agreement. Yes. You have to start there and cant do everything comprehensively, that is when it falls apart with both parties, even when you have bipartisan consensus, take issues where people agree. And paul ryan is trying to do that. Start with dreamers and ending separation policy, but then democrats have said they are for more border security, they have to give them, as well. Well talk about legislation next. Let me ask about the kids. This is a moment, i dont know who watched Melania Trump live yesterday. She had great questions, i dont think we have the answer to. She said, what about these kids who are here and are seeking asylum and cant go back, we dont know where they are from. They have a special minor refugee program, id love to know more about that, how do you find answers to where the kids came from and a lot of them arent speaking at the time. That is one of the major issues and once we get families back together, how do you decide, right, who is here for asylum reasons and who is here for economic reasons. Juan correct, and we changed standard for asylum. The attorney general said if you come from abusive family, for example, Domestic Violence is no longer criteria to allow you to claim asylum. Having those discussions now about what is legitimate and what is not. Two quick things, one to kennedy, i think that democrats are invested in a solution. Im not saying there is not politics at play, lots of politics, but remember, the president stopped this policy and changed the policy. Said, it wasnt my policy, it had to be congress. This week, he acted unilaterally and it was something he could fix. That is what you asked to do. Everybody asked him to do. Now hes done it, youre upset about that, as well. He said it wasnt something he could do. We are in a situation where right now republicans are not reaching out in the congress in terms of looking for bipartisan deal, they are trying to find resolution among themselves asthma jority in the house. Compromise bill came out of objections from democrats, mad rat republicans acquiesced to. The other thing, president obama had so many legal problems, all the way to the supreme court, he was swatted down with executive action on immigration, so i dont fault this administration for being hesitant to use executive action. Juan im not saying that. People want to see the end, it is not popular among anybody. You want to see an end to the policy, well talk about legislatively. Juan we have a situation where republicans are stuck among themselves. No doubt about that. Juan especially amnesty and President Trump said he was opposed to the bills and now saying, im not sure, if you change it, the question is, what is the compromise among republicans . All right, well talk about that in the next block. In the meantime, House Republican leadership putting back a vote on compromise immigration bill, but the president is placing the blame squarely on democrats, who he says are trying to destruct whether congress can pass a bill ahead of the midterm election. Plus, today is deadline for d. O. J. To hand over documents requested by investigators, will the department cooperate and what lawmakers will do if they dont. I think both chairman trey gowdy and ryan have been giving the f. B. I. And department of justice the benefit of a doubt, i have not been, as you know. My patience has run out. Hey we didnt have a homeowners claim last year so allstate is giving us money back on our bill. Well, that seems fair. We didnt use it. Wish we got money back on gym memberships. Get money back hilarious. With claimfree rewards. Switching to allstate is worth it. vo is ahhhmazing ful simple goodness meaty morsels. A tender texture. With real meat and a blend of peas and carrots i can see. A totally new kind of awesome going on here avo new beneful simple goodness. Tender, meaty morsels with real ingredients you can see. To give you the protein you need with less of the sugar you dont. Ill take that. [cheers] 30 grams of protein and 1 gram of sugar. New ensure max protein. In two great flavors. House Republican Leadership punting a vote on compromise immigration, a bill to next week, after finding they did not currently have the votes needed to pass it. Reports from capitol hill many members were wildly confused about what is in the bill and what is not. This after a more conservative measure authored by chair Bob Goodlatte failed on the house floor yesterday. Congressman mike mccall sounding optimistic the house will approve the compromise bill. Watch. We have a lot of different factions in our conference, this is one of the better, if not best conferences ive been to, where everybody is trying to come together as a team so we can get the 218 and get across the finish line. Meanwhile, President Trump tweeting this morning, alas, more republicans in november and we will pass the finest, fairest, most comprehensive immigration bill in the world. Right now we have the dumbest and the worst. Superlativ e. Dems are doing nothing, they want to resist, ours is produce. Or produce. [laughter] democratic congressman says republicans have not invited democrats to the table on the issue. Watch. There really is an opportunity to put together comprehensive reform. It does exist. Right now it is not in the house. The word compromise is a compromise within the republican caucus, its not, no democrat involved. No democrat has been asked to engage in the drafting of the legislation that will be on the floor next week. Very own peter is live on capitol hill with the latest. Lots of drama and chaos, peter, what is going on . Kennedy, we just heard from the top vote counter, congressman Steve Scalice. He says wait until after the midterm and see if republicans can pad majority here. Leadership plan had been to vote yesterday and they were going to vote yesterday and now it is sometime next week, they realized this bill needs to be sweetened. We have come to the conclusion that there are a couple of provisions we need to add to the bill and that will have a vote on it next week, everybody is working together, working together in good faith. I was really amazed at how we pulled together as a team. Did we all agree with each other on everything . No. We pulled together as a team. The leadership is on hold now, has full 25 billion President Trump wants for the border wall in it, it would provide pathway to citizenship by daca kids. Immigration hard liners and moderates, many call it compromise bill, but democrats dont want to be a part of any deal. They talk and sometimes you all repeat it, it is a compromise. It is not a compromise. It may be compromise with the devil, it is not a compromise with democrats in terms of what they have in their bill. More of bipartisan feeling over on the senate side, where a new gang of four plans to meet next week on immigration, democrats dick durbin and Diane Feinstein and tillis and ted cruz. I hope it is a choice for senate democrats. Do they want to fix this problem, come together and fix this problem . If they do, we have do it. If on the other hand, democrats want an issue to run on in november, then we may El Paso Police department up with separate bills. Here on the house side, there are 42 more republican members than democrats, so if the party comes together, they dont need any help from the other side, but after inperson meetings and plea from the president , they havent been able to do it. Kennedy. Peter, thank you for that report, well be watching all day long to see if they can whip those votes. So what does Steve Scalice have to do to get his cabbingus on board . Juan the difficulty, is mark meadows Freedom Caucus people dont want anything interpreted as amnesty or going back on pledges made by President Trump. Could nuance the language. Juan that is right, want to figure out how to do it, they are worried, if you look back historically, republicans who defeated george w. Bush are coming forward when you had the gang of eight in 2018. People said we dont want to give amnesty out and now the question is how does President Trump going to speak about it, editorial speaking to address this point. Okay. It is really interesting, abby, you have republicans who dont want to be tethered to the word amnesty, but you have an issue that could hurt the party as a whole. What do they do here . How could they possibly soften, change or nuance the language in order to have something palatable for all sides and that will heal the split . That is the big question, the party is split. Two bills being proposed in the house. I think the president needs to be clear about what he wants. First he made the point last week to support the more conservative bill and then either one he would support and now saying push this off until we get a red wave, hes worked directly with republicans saying, we get this done with who is there now or we dont, focus on that. Republicans are in a unique opportunity, kennedy, in this new bill, too work with democrats. You were saying earlier, best bill to get passed have people from all sides. Compare that to obamacare, that was passed down party lines and that was a disaster in many ways. If this is successful, in close house races, you could have republican saying to democrats, we fixed immigration, democrats didnt help at all. That could be problematic and unfortunately, im cynical when it comes to some Party Leaders and i happening nancy pelosi wants to milk this thing like a county fair winning dairy cow past the midterm because the pictures in this story and issue unfortunately give them traction. Gives them traction, especially when they lost traction with the dreamers. We saw when we were sitting on the couch eight months ago, the marquee issue for 2018, now it is kids separated from their families. I agree about that. Republicans should take heart in how many votes they got from the goodlatte bill, that was surprising. Ive seen some commentary on whether they should take that and add something about the visa lottery, for instance, to sweeten the deal with that bill and make that the compromise in the end, the Freedom Caucus is always the problem here, 30 members. It is quite a bulky part of the caucus, of the overall republican caucus, figuring out compromise on that, too, would benefit the chairman if he went back and said, we got 193, lets see what we can do here. Also, jim jordan wants to be house speaker, vocal member of the Freedom Caucus and hes going to figure out a different way to lead if he in fact, wants to ascend to the speakership. This would be great opportunity to get out front and get it done and prove ahead of time he could make it happen. The American People are so frustrated with the idea that these people have been in washington supposedly working on this for years and years and years and to hear, you wont cooperate. No, you wont cooperate, it is garbage. Do your job, where could you go to work and not do your job and return to office . Wed be fired. You say that and look at jeff sessions, hes failed in a number of areas of his job, including here. He went to capitol hill to meet republicans and republicans were on a bus going to the white house. I remember that. Juan one thing that is important is to find areas of agreement and solution. Part of that, i think is being honest with each other across the political divide. The numbers on the board in terms of people crossing actual at 70year low. The economy continues to improve, the numbers will go up. Juan could, but a lot of language and attention is so hype e hyperbolic on both sides. Also pictures you have seen. We dont know what is behind that and run with it. I think people sometimes use this as a fear mongering redhot button issue going into yeah, they are expanding it for the wrong reason and kids become bargaining chip, it is sad. Tributes pouring in after the death of our friend and colleague krauthammer, one of the most remarkable political voices of our time. Pulitzer prize winning commentator died yesterday at the age of 68, less than two weeks after revealing in a heartfelt letter that he was losing his battle with cancer, saying he had lived a wonderful life full and complete with the great love and the great endeavors that make it worth living. The harvard trained physician overcame an accident that left him unable to walk, to become a bestselling author. He was also known as the dean of conservative commentators. In addition, krauthammer was longtime Fox News Contributor who gave unique insight on so many issues. Take a look. Its my job to call a folly a folly, you are betraying your whole life if you dont say what you think and dont say honestly and bluntly. Why did you choose psychiatry . I was looking for something halfway between the reality of medicine and the elegance, if you like, of philosophy. So psychiatry was the obvious thing. Number one, im psychiatrist in remission, doing very well, havent had a relapse in 25 years. I write in the book, one reason why i shifted is because on Foreign Policy the democrats changed, i didnt. What did you notice about progression of your thinking on politic . Well, how dumb i was in the beginning. Why i stopped evolving about 20 years ago. Good for you. Im frozen. Juan, your thoughts . Juan you know, he said he stopped evolving, i thought someone who regularly debated charles on special report that part of the genius of charles, he was constantly evolving. He was a big chess man. He would come up to new york for grand matches, like a little boy going to world series. I never got it. When arguing with him, you could see the chess principles in place. He was evolving as issues shifted and times changed. The joy of debating with charles was in fact, you had to think with him or he was going to outthink you and i got outthought a lot. I can tell you, hes a brilliant man. The other thing, he would say, when he was giving speeches, his favorite opening line was, im so glad to be here tonight, where i cant be interrupted by juan williams. [laughter] juan i would come up, i remember once giving a roast, im glad to be here to have the microphone tonight and not be interrupted by Charles Krauthammer. One thing he said i love, i want to persuade someone, never start with my assumptions, if i do, were not going anywhere. Figure out what the other person believes and then draw a line from what they believe and to what you believe by showing them the logical sequence. That is actually right. That is where his philosophical training comes in, brilliant, absurdant, the wonderful thing about him, he had such an incredibly curious mind and very patient with people, especially the vast majority of people were his intellectual inferiors and he was so patient with people who were curious and the thing that i loved about him and when someone who has such a great life and intellect passes, it really gives you a moment to pause and take lessons from their life. From someone like him, a couple things, one, continue to flourish and find your passion, that is critical. He loved chess, he loved baseball and continued in his pursuit of knowing those, but also goes to show how writing organizes your thoughts and your intellect can expand with age the more you write. His writing was beautiful and profound and funny and all these things and the fact he was able to portray that as broadcaster and quadraplegic, that is amazing. Everyone has challenges, he had a lot of them and never let it stop him. He kept living life to the fullest. He said in the letter, dont have pity on me. I grew up watching Charles Schumer krauthammer and i would race him to hear what he had to say on special reports, you never knew where he was going to be or where he would take you. You wanted to go on the journey with him. He had a soft way of spoking. When he was around, no one else spoke, what did Charles Krauthammer think . We take time to celebrate his life, he was such a special person and remind ourselves we can live our life to the fullest. I hope he encourages us to be our best everyday. We will miss him terribly. You talk about the journey with him. Another great quote i love, good for all of us, you dont want to talk high faluting distractions that nobody understands, make things plain and clear. It is beautiful, right . Totally. You could see in his columns, i would regularly read n. This time, were incredibly sad and mourning his passing, it is exciting a new generation of people who are interested in politics are now hearing about this man who might not have read his column over the years, might not know the story of his evolution from a democrat to a neoconto a trump critic towards the end. He really lived out that on motto of importance of calling a folly a folly and that is why you had to sit and listen to him because before he started a show or wrote a column, i dont think you could predict what he was going to say about a person or a policy or a decision. So invaluable asset. He also didnt speak with anger. He could disagree with you, but he wanted to understand. You made this point earlier, where you are coming from. He wanted to understand why you thought the way he did. Great and okay we feel differently about things. Juan i know it personally. We need that mind set today more than we ever have before. That is why his legacy needs to live, we need to learn from him. The idea he really listened to people, listened to the other side, something that is missing. More on the incredible life and legacy of charles, tune in tonight for a fox news special, Charles Krauthammer, his words, that is 9 00 eastern. More outnumbered in just a moment. Come here, babe. To turn over all documents, requested by congressial investigators. F. B. I. Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney rosenstein met with republicans on that issue last friday and set a sunday deadline for the department to provide records about f. B. I. s u. S. Of confidential informant who made contact with trump. Responding to whether contempt of congress is on the table. Take a listen. Im in support of making sure we get documents we rightly deserve and legitimately requested. We expect compliance, getting daily reports from chairs about progress on compliance, i will regroup with them tomorrow, but i expect them to comply with legitimate document requests this is legitimate oversight of the executive branch. Senior Justice Department official telling fox news, we agreed to provide documents by friday or explain why we couldnt. That process is underway, including delivery of many requested documents yesterday and today. A lot of frustration on the house, but also among the American People. Kennedy, Pretty Simple questions you are getting from members of the house saying, when did this russia probe begin and more information about this informant on the campaign. Are they right to be as frustrated as they are . Part of the frustration is political, obviously. Any time you have members of congress and their grandstanding, political element, this is legitimate request, sometimes impossible to separate the two, you have to err on the side of transparency. F. B. I. And d. O. J. Have problems with perception, it doesnt do them a lot of good to hide behind some of these excuses about National Security, which at this point seem flimsy. They do like highlighting with sharpie. They are even very good at redacting and can redact away, if there is political element, no reason to withhold the documents. Juan, why set the deadline, by friday or sunday, we will give the documents, if there are real reasons they cant get them in time in that amount of time, why not say that, why set that day . Juan i think they said, were going to try to compromise here. What you see is Rod Rosenstein said you guys are threatening me with contempt, i can come back and demand your texts. No, rosenstein blackmailing members of Congress Taking place here. Rosenstein tried to give as much as possible in the past and they come back and found complaints, we want more, we want more. There is a question about how rosenstein maintains the integrity of Ongoing Investigation in the face of critics, democrats and critics who say what this is about is undermining public trust. Melissa, this comes after the i. G. Report and the investigation from the beginning, we know how he felt about President Trump and his goal was to get him out. Is there more reason now than before to say, weve got serious questions and youre not giving answers want and settled things were talking about and rosenstein held those back. It is not like they are asking for unreasonable things and trying to cooperate, hes holding back, seen evidence and saw testimony from the i. G. Himself, rosenstein held back texts and said they were for National Security and says well stop him, that is not National Security, holding back text, Rod Rosenstein is, he doesnt Want Department to be embarrassed. Juan i dont think it is embarrassment. Why he wanted the investigation before and after it, that one mysteriously was not made available. Juan he had Ongoing Investigation by the Inspector General and wanted to come out in full context. Inspector general said he didnt have it, that is problematic. Not like the i. G. Said, i have sticky notes and organize my thoughts. Part of that is he didnt have it, he was not given that one text that is part of that is because they want to look good, too. If they send out text, that falls on them, how did that go by and happen . I think it happened because people were swept up in the politics of this. The i. G. Report, no evidence found of bias and paychecks are problematic, they didnt do anything to stop President Trump. That is also also he didnt want to be on the russia probe, he didnt think they would find anything. Michael horowitz says hes investigating the bridge between the clinton and russia investigation, that is weird and problematic. It is weird and violates protocol. It is all weird and problematic, with Christopher Wray coming out and saying hell have to do top to bottom investigation and have bias training and all of these things, i dont think Rod Rosenstein doesnt make up for what happened, when you talk about bias, what happened, what horowitz said, james comey didnt show bias. Political bias, right. We learned about early days of the russia probe, there are Unanswered Questions about bias we know did exist. He said he couldnt say struck acted without bias, that was exact praise. Didnt say he acted without bias. More about it. Ive been enthusiast for most amount of documents that can be overreleased. People over redact and withhold to push back against devin nunes, i will hold you in contempt, hes been the most flagrant stay tuned, more to come on that. First Lady Melania Trump meeting with Migrant Children separated from their families at the border yesterday and reportedly one of the driving forces behind the president s decision to reverse the policy of separating families, but all the media wants to talk about is that jacket the first lady wore on the plane. Its a 39 jacket that reads i really dont care, do you . On the back. Watch this. 100 degrees, 95 humidity in texas, i just came from there. There is no scenario where you need to put on a jacket. Why did no one say maybe pick one of your beautiful coats, Melania Trump, i dont understand. Maybe it is a moment of true candor from her. This administration doesnt care about these kids.
