The president turned impeachment talk into rallying cry for his base last night in mississippi. It gives you great flexibility. Its not clear when wolf would take over as acting dhs chief the federal governments Third Largest agency with over 240,000 employees. Wolf will be the fifth person to hold this role in the trump white house. Officials say President Trump has no plans to nominate wolf to the job permanently. Secretary wolf is the former chief of staff to former dhs secretary nielsen and has risen through the ranks of dhs on and off since its creation following the terrorist attacks on september 11th. His nomination as undersecretary for policy at dhs remains stalled in the senate. Officials say wolf has a very favorable reputation at dhs. The current acting dhs secretary will remain on the job until veterans day, according to white house spokesman. Currently the acting head of u. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and seen as immigration hardliner is a potential candidate to take over in the future. At its creation dhs was focused on counterterrorism. The coast guard has moved under its purview to protect the ports. Dhs also responsible for enforcing the countrys immigration laws the signature issue for President Trumps agenda and hopes for a second term in 2020. Police fired tear gas at antigovernment protesters after they set fire to metro stations, vandalized buildings and atta attacked chinas official news agency. Jon at least 13 wildfires are still burning right now throughout california, with red flag warnings in effect into the evening for two Southern California counties. You can see some of the hot spots right there. This is what firefighters are working on. Theres about 1200 firefighters actively working this blaze right now, trying to put out this fire. They are digging deep in the ashes of these hills right now, trying to make sure theres no smoldering embers, because it only takes seconds for one of these embers to spread and spark up another wildfire. The maria fired burned about 9400 acres, threatened about 2500 structures and burned down three homes since it started thursday evening while kids were trickortreating in nearby neighborhoods. The fire was fuelled by winds of up to 35 milesperhour during the tail end of this epic santa ana wind event that we have been experiencing here. Nearly 80,000 people were ordered to evacuate around this Farming Community as flames shot down the hills. Crews were able to make Good Progress today controlling this fire since yesterday because the winds have died down significantly. The fire is now about 20 contained. But were not in the clear just yet. There is still cause for caution and concern. We are not out of the woods yet. As the wind shifts, we have a whole new fuel bed that opens up and is subject to a pretty significant firefight. Dave, remember back in march that vanity fair cover of beto orourke on the cover there, man im just born to be in it, is their quote, well now hes out of it. What happened to the Beto Campaign . Its such a stark difference than if we were having this conversation a year ago, or not even that long ago. Given the fact that beto orourke if you remember, he did something that no other u. S. Senate candidate in history ever did, which was raise more than 80 Million Dollars for his senate campaign, and yet here he is amid all these financial troubles, which are now over for him, bowing out of the president ial race, effectively because he couldnt raise enough money to sustain his campaign. So its a dramatic turn of events. And one too that, you know, a lot of people in texas are wondering whats going to happen next. John cornyn today, the senator of texas, put out an email paraphrasing here it is a foregone conclusion beto orourke is going to get involved in the texas senate race. Orourke has said no, im not going to do that, not running in 2020 for the u. S. Senate in texas, but remember too, he also said he wasnt going to run for the presidency after he lost against senator ted cruz in 2018. Jon who benefits among the democrats Still Standing who benefits from his dropping out of the race . Is there a natural constituency for betos supporters . Well, you would think that somebody would benefit given of course the incredible amount of support that he had last time around, when he ran against ted cruz, but orourkes poll numbers have been in such doldrums lately, polling in the 2 percentage area, the 1 percentage area, depending on what state you are looking at, so its effectively a wash for candidates. You are going to have some beto orourke supporters scattering to perhaps biden, warren or sanders but it is going to be along the margins and talking probably just shades of a percentage point for any candidate benefitting from him getting out of the race. Jon another candidate Whose Campaign seems to be in a bit of trouble might be Kamala Harris. She says that shes going to close her New Hampshire office and shes all in on iowa. Listen im committed to New Hampshire, but we had to make difficult decisions, and so yes, im all in in iowa because iowas the first state. Jon all right, but the you take a look at if you take a look at the polling in iowa right now, shes not even in the top five. You have warren at 22. 3 . This is the real clear politics average. Pete buttigieg at 17. Joe biden at 15. 7. Then sanders and klobuchar rounding out the top five. Kamala harris is obviously nowhere near the top. Is focus on iowa going to get her anywhere . Shes not committed to New Hampshire. There have been photos circulating today about all of her offices that have been effectively closed. Nobodys there. Nobodys doing anything. So an all in strategy for iowa may sound good if youre a harris supporter but by the same token too, nobody is really supporting her in iowa yet. There are a lot of undecided voters still. The poll numbers you just put up are for the people who have made up their minds. But theres a dwindling number of people who havent made up their minds at this point. If Kamala Harris is going to stay in this race and have any success, shes going to have to do something pretty monumental to get herself back in this race and be able to sustain it until we have the california primary which comes up on super tuesday in march. Thats a long way away and a lot will happen before that before she has a chance to vie for the nomination in her home state primary. Jon perhaps surprising to some people is that joe biden is number three in that iowa poll. He is the former Vice President after all and nationally hes doing pretty well. Listen aint may be why he is taking on these are the National Polling numbers, joe biden 27. 6, an average of the major polls, but hes taking on the second place finisher in these National Polling averages, Elizabeth Warren. Listen now to joe biden. Very difficult way to get there. [inaudible]. Look, i think getting that plan through is difficult. [inaudible]. Jon he says shes a good person. Hes talking about Elizabeth Warren and her 52 trillion dollars medicare for all plan. Obviously he thinks its a vulnerable point for the senator from massachusetts. How does he do with that . He may be correct too. This is something that Elizabeth Warren, she lines to say that she has a she likes to say she has a plan for everything. She has a plan that shes put out that is very controversial even within the Democratic Party itself. So by virtue of that, you are going to expect that joe biden and many other candidates are going to take shots at her in part because she is doing so well in the polls right now. Nobody really cared about warren maybe six months ago when she wasnt doing very well. Everyone cares about her right now if you are a democratic president ial candidate. You put those poll numbers up for biden nationally, yes, he is still doing quite well nationally, but the thing for biden it doesnt really matter in a practical way what voters in new york and new jersey think, their contests are a long way away april and even june, what matters is New Hampshire, iowa, nevada and perhaps South Carolina which is perhaps the only state where hes kind of running away in those state polls. Pay attention to the early state polls much more than the national polls. You may have a lot of candidates we are talking about right now who arent even in the race come South Carolina or a little bit beyond. Jon back to the iowa numbers, warren 22 , then buttigieg, biden, sanders and klobuchar. It is said there are only a handful of tickets out of iowa, will anybody beyond maybe these top five or whoever comes in in the top five in iowa, will anybody be campaigning much beyond iowa it is likely there will be a few. John delaney, for example, some people may be wondering who he is, he is been running for president since 2017. Tulsi gabbard, may be in it. Theres no evidence she will do a third party run at this point, but there could be a number who will try to vie in New Hampshire and even go beyond that even if they dont do really well. They can hang on. It is great publicity and great press for them if they stick in the race all the same. Jon theres still room for hilary clinton, i suppose. Dont expect that she is going to get in the race. It seems almost certain that she will not at this point even if its fun to talk about.
