It is starting over again, and what the American People want us focused on in washington, d. C. Is the kind of things i was talking about, at the steel factory today and on a farm here in minnesota. They want us talking about this growing economy. They want us talking about making america more secure. I really do believe and i hope that congress will get the message that well move on. Ellison barber has the latest from the white house. Ellison . Hi, jon. The department of treasury says they have their subpoena, but officials would not comment beyond that. President trump is talking and commenting on this on twitter writing in part quote i won the 2016 election partially based on no tax returns while im under audit and the voters didnt care. The radical left democrats want to again relitigate this matter, make it a part of the 2020 election. The chairman of the house ways and Means Committee says his committee needs to see six years of President Trumps personal and business tax returns. He said quote after reviewing the options available to me and upon the advice of counsel, i issued subpoenas friday to the secretary of the treasury and the commissioner of the irs. While i dont take this step lightly, i believe this action gives us the best opportunity to succeed and obtain the requested materials. The irs and department of treasury have one week to comply with this request. Chairman neal previously tried to get these tax returns under a little known bit older provision of the federal tax code, one that came to be during the harding administration, after the teapot dome scandal, treasury secretary mnuchin rejected the request that was made under that provision. The secretary said that it lacked legitimate legislative purpose, and therefore violated Supreme Court precedent. Seems like all of this could wind up in a courtroom. Right now it seems like chairman neal is prepared for that to happen. Listen here. Are you going to take President Trump to court over getting his tax returns . I think some sort of a decision by the end of the week thats for sure. The options are pretty narrow now. The last eight president s have voluntarily released their tax forms. I think what were trying to do here is to remain consistent with the principles that previous president s have developed. President trump previously said he would fight subpoenas from congressional democrats. We know the white house told former officials including former white House Counsel mcgahn not to comply with ps is for testimony. With subpoenas for testimony. Now sources confirm to fox news, us who counsel reached out to former white House Counsel reached out to former white house mcgahn and asked him to say publicly he did not believe the president obstructed justice. He this ask was reportedly done at President Trumps request. In a statement mcgahns attorney told fox news we did not perceive it as any kind of threat or something sinister. It was a request professionally and cordially made. Congressional democrats want to hear from don mcgahn on the 21st, and the chairman of the house judiciary Committee Says if he does not testify, they are prepared to start proceedings to hold him in contempt. Jon . Jon ellison barber, thank you. Meantime the president s personal attorney has cancelled his up coming but democrats said the trip was politically motivated. I wasnt going them to encourage them to start an investigation. They have an investigation. They have an investigation of how ukrainians helped the dnc and hillary operatives to get in some cases false dirty information about the trump campaign. This has nothing to do with the election of 2020. The election of 2020 is a long time from now. And if i wanted to meddle in that election, which i dont, i could have held this for a year and dropped it right before the convention. Jon giulianis change of heart came just hours after President Trump said he planned to speak with him about his trip and the investigation. U. S. And chinese negotiators wrapped up their trade talks yesterday with no deal in place. But there is optimism from both sides that an agreement still can be reached, and President Trump says the relationship with China Remains a strong one. We are in washington with more. Things appear to be at a stalemate yesterday afternoon but by dinner time Chinese State media reported that u. S. Negotiators will continue talks in beijing in the coming weeks. At 12 01 a. M. Friday morning, those tariffs went into effect. Up from 10 to 25 percent on 200 billion dollars in chinese goods. These are just some of those goods affected Clothing Electronics furniture even colognes and perfumes. A few hours ago this morning President Trump took to twitter to try and calm the fears of americans about the tariffs, tweeting, quote, such an easy way to avoid tariffs, make or produce your goods and products in the good old usa. It is very simple. Simple is in the eye of the beholder. Mean who produce goods overseas are watching this play out closely. It is possible the United States is not finished with china when it comes to the tariff business. Trade representative Robert Lighthizer who was at the negotiating table with his chinese counterpart put out a statement that reads in part quote the president also ordered us to begin process on raising tariffs essentially all remaining imports from china which are valued at approximately 300 billion dollars. On friday after a few short hours of talks, chinese vice premier was spotted at the meesh Willard Hotel having nearby Willard Hotel having lunch and he said talks would continue and went fairly well. The vice premier says it is up to the two president s meaning trump and xi to talk directly and work this out. Were told the two have not yet spoken but President Trump on thursday said he received a letter from chinese president xi and expects to speak to him on the phone at some point. Until that time, china has already made it clear the country is preparing to retaliate for the move made by the United States but it appears both sides will continue those talks. Jon . Jon david reporting there. Thank you david. Stay tuned for more on the tariffs. We will have reaction from consumers and analysis from the wall street journals john bussey in the hour later. The u. S. Ramps up pressure on iran. The pentagon has sent a warship and antimissile system to the middle east to join the Carrier Strike Group Already in the region. These come amidst growing threats from tehran against u. S. Forces in the area. It is important that iran understand that an attack on americans or its interests will be met with an appropriate response. Were in the middle east to defeat terrorism. But we will protect ourselves. Jon Leland Vittert has the latest from washington. Evening, jon. To summarize the administrations position on iran, for 40 years iran has been killing american soldiers, attacking american facilities, and taking american hostages, moves that require selfdefense. Add to that reports of specific and were told credible intelligence about possible iranian action and here we go. The Patriot Missile battery, a long range all weather air Defense System used to shoot down Ballistic Missiles and aircraft heads to the middle east to protect u. S. Assets and allies. The uss articleton transfers from europe to arlington transfers from the europe to mideast. It is used to transport marines and aircraft to various types of warfare including special operations. The pentagon released video shot from the uss Abraham Lincoln as the carrier and her battle group traveled through the suez canal in route of striking distance to iran. What the United States is doing, they have likely very good intelligence here what were trying to demonstrate to iran is we will respond. Thats why were being so public about it. Note this statement by the pentagon, despite also sending bombers to the region, you can tell a lot about the threat based on the assets that are sent. The United States does not seek conflict with iran. But we are postured and ready to defend u. S. Forces and interests in the region. Keep in mind the timing here. This all comes around the oneyear anniversary of President Trumps withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Deal and increased pressure on the iranian regime. The United States has imposed sanctions on iran that are having a crippling effect. The currency devalued significantly. Inflation about 37 . Economy contracted about 6 . Civil unrest is growing in the country. And then we just recently designated the irgc their main weapon that they use to impose control and abomination in the middle east through proxies as a terrorist organization. We have talked about the military steps being taken. Secretary of state mike pompeo heads overseas to meet with his russian counterparts tomorrow and tuesday on the diplomatic front. One might imagine that iran will come up, the russians have sold iran most of their air Defense Systems. Leland vitter live from washington, thank you. President trump is down playing north koreas recent launch of short range Ballistic Missiles. The president says he and kim jongun continue to have a strong relationship as Nuclear Talks stall months after their failed second summit in hanoi. Kitty logan is in london with more. Hi, jon. President trump has been speaking about the latest short range missile tests from north korea. He says he doesnt believe them to be a breach of trust. President trump said the two short range missiles fired from north korea last thursday were, quote, standard stuff. The missiles flew around 180 miles and landed in the sea. It was the second round of tests in a week. They were overseen by north Korean Leader kim jongun himself. State media says the country wants to boost its capability to strike. Its unclear how this leaves negotiations with the u. S. , which have stalled since the last summit between President Trump and the north Korean Leader broke down without agreement. But the president says the relationship between the two leaders is still strong and he wants to continue negotiations in the future. There are also concerns that north korea could resume tests of longrange missiles. Pyongyang has previously promised to stop its nuclear program, although it hasnt ever made a Firm Commitment to do so. It wants sanctions lifted first, something the u. S. Has refused to do. These short range missile tests are a concern to some neighboring countries, to south korea, but the hopes are that talks will resume again before tensions escalate. Jon . Jon kitty logan, thank you. Venezuela braces for more demonstrations as Opposition Leader and u. S. Recognized president of venezuela juan guaido urges his supporters to get out and protest nationwide. This after the arrest of one of his top staffers. It all comes on the heels of guaidos failed military uprising last week. Disputed president maduro has upped the pressure on Opposition Leader and imposed major government crackdown on those resisting since the uprising. President trump takes a swipe at one of the rising 2020 democrats, south bend indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg is the latest to be targeted by the president earning himself a brand new nickname this as several of his fellow competitors hit the campaign trail today, while front runner former Vice President biden continues to dominate the polls. Christina coleman is following the race from los angeles. Christina . Jon, democratic president ial hopeful mayor Pete Buttigieg dismissing President Trumps new nickname for him saying he quote didnt get the reference. Trump mocked buttigieg in an interview yesterday afternoon comparing the 37yearold south bend indiana mayor to the longtime mascot for mad magazine. Trump said quote alfred e. Newman cannot become president of the United States. When asked about trumps insult, mayor pete said he never even heard of that character and had to google it. He went on to say he was surprised the president of the United States wasnt spending more time trying to salvage his trade deal with china. Buttigieg is scheduled to speak at the Human Rights Campaign gala in las vegas tonight. And that politico interview, trump also hit democratic frontrunner biden for flubbing u. K. Prime minister mays name. Biden called her margaret thatcher. The president said bidens popularity reminds him of his 2016 race, predicting the former Vice President will remain at the top of polls, but said he didnt know if biden was a good frontrunner. Trump also suggested it would be, quote, appropriate for him to speak to attorney general bill barr about a potential investigation into biden and alleged ties to ukraine. Other democratic hopefuls on the map today, minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar is in puerto rico meeting with that territorys outspoken governor as the island continues to recover from a pair of devastating hurricanes that struck in 2017. New york senator Kirsten Gillibrand just wrapped up a town hall in New Hampshire where she criticized the president s trade war with china, saying the president s negotiating style is the problem. I think its because hes too belligerent. I think hes so overly certain and so selfconsumed that he cant actually work well with others and find Common Ground because you really have to spend as much time listening as you are talking and he hasnt done that. Another contender planning to throw his hat into the crowded field this week, montana governor steve bullock. He posted a teaser video on twitter this morning. The democrat very popular in his home state, winning his second term in 2016, as trump carried the state by 20 points. And if he does join the race, that would bring the tally to 22 major democratic president ial hopefuls. Jon . Jon thanks very much. Gets hammered by torrential rain and severe thunderstorms. Texas and louisiana so far hit the hardest by flash flooding shutting down major highways in the region and knocking out power to thousands of homes. Meteorologist adam klotz is live in the fox extreme weather center. Adam . It s been a mess across its been a mess across portions of the southern u. S. And unfortunately thats going to continue. We have a setup that allows that to happen. You see some warm air in the southeast, temperatures running up to the 80s, not too much farther back off towards the west, down into the 60s. That warm air and cold air run up against each other often times you see big systems develop. We have that stretching from the gulf coast running up into the midwest and now over off to the midatlantic. It is going to be a soggy weekend for the eastern half of the country and unfortunately some of those areas hardest hit are continuing to see some heavy rain at this hour. Now, over the course of the last week, now this is taking you back six or seven days, everything here in these deep red and purple colors, that is widespread rainfall getting up to 6 to 8 inches. The ground is already saturated. Anymore rain thats on the way is going to continue to cause flooding in some of these areas. We have got flood watches and warnings across the region from eastern texas all the way into portions of mississippi, and then of course the mississippi river, because of all the flooding farther to the north, thatnt cos to be an issue that continues to be an issue. Historic levels of river height along some of these areas. Time stamp in the corner. The whole system lifts across the entire southeast, eventually running up into the midwest, across the midatlantic, the new england, youre looking at the entire eastern half of the United States unfortunately. So a soggy day today. Soggy day tomorrow for mothers day. And then all this additional rain hitting places where the ground is saturated. Were looking at spots getting another 3 to 4 inches across the southeast. Nowhere for this rain to go. Possibly going to start to see some down trees if any sort of wind moves there the area through the area with these systems. Otherwise the temperatures stay cooler as a result of this. Forecast for tomorrow highs getting up in some cases only 52 degrees in chicago. Same case in new york. Stays cool into monday and stays cool in some of these soggy spots into tuesday also. Jon, kind of a soggy unfortunately mothers day forecast for tonight and running into tomorrow also. Jon for much of the country unfortunately. Adam klotz thank you. Investigators are on the scene of yesterdays Chemical Spill in the houston ship channel. It happened when a tugboat pushing two barges collided with a 755 foot oil tanker. The impact sank one of the barges, damaged the other, and spilled chemicals used to make gasoline into the channel. The coast guard and texas environmental officials are assessing the damage. The top priority for the unified command is public safety, and weve been conducting air monitoring from the beginning, from the on set of this incident. The objectives for today are to secure the barges and begin salvage operations to boom any product and to begin recovery. And then finally, to reopen the ship channels. Jon roughly 9,000 barrels of those chemicals spilled into the river, but luckily no one was injured. Stunning high speed video i should say stunning video of a high speed chase in california. Police started tailing a black toyota prius after they received a tip that one of the cars passengers was the suspect in the shooting death of a Convenience Store employee. At one point, the suspect leans out the car window and fires several shots at officers. The chase came to an end after a dramatic shootout with the suspect taken away in an ambulance. No one else was seriously hurt. The unfortunate part is that congress isnt doing their job, and because congress isnt doing their job, the president is left to use his authorities to actually look at ways that he can solve a crisis. If congress would actually step up, we wouldnt need the department of defense, but because they are not stepping up, the president has to step in and he has to solve this problem on his own. Jon thats the president of the National Border Patrol Council calling on congress to do more, after the pentagon announced a 1. 5 billion Dollars Program for about 80 new miles of border wall fencing. This as one border town yuma arizona struggles with a major surge of migrant families crossing the border stretching the communitys resources to the breaking point. We have the story from yuma. This is a federal issue. This is not a local issue, so it needs a federal level response. Yuma mayor nicholas thinks enough is enough as his city deals with a large influx of migrants. . We have had 2500 people come through our shelter system. In a community of 100,000 people, thats a large number to come through a shelter system in little over a month. Yumas food bank is also feeling the effects. The facility has turned into a migrant Donation Center volunteered by a family of three and a friend. Each day they sort through clothing, hygiene and baby product donations for those who came across the border. Were looking to try to make sure that we meet all the needs of our community, but with this, we dont know when this is stopping, and were hoping that our congressmen can work through this so that it does have an end because its hard for us. We cant keep this up. Yuma Border Patrol says the problem is getting worse. Since october, there have been 40,000 apprehensions, compared the prior 12 months where there was just over 26,000 total. Their Detention Centers are overcapacity. Migrants are new being sent to a makeshift shelter at an Old Salvation Army thrift store in yuma. The building can only hold 200 people. Mayor nicholas says this shelter is now overcapacity as well. We dont know how long this will be the case, that we will be providing this service. It imposes a strain on our finances. Border patrol chief told Senate Committee wednesday apprehension numbers are off the charts along the southern border. She says her agents are reaching their limits. In yuma, arizona, fox news. Hes the first president to really take them on head on. I think a good solid agreement with china could actually set a new era, a fair trade with china, fair for our formers workers and businesses farmers workers and businesses. This is leverage to keep everyone at the table. Jon President Trump slaps higher tariffs on chinese goods as the u. S. And china failed to negotiate after negotiate a trade deal i should say after the latest round of talks. Im jon scott. This is the fox report. Its the bottom of the hour. The higher tariffs are expected to have a Significant Impact here in the United States with the prices of consumer goods from china expected to rise in the up coming weeks. We are live at Herald Square in new york city with more. Jackie . Jon, were not seeing those price hikes in stores just yet because most of the inventory thats being sold right now was already purchased before those tariffs went into effect, but as new orders come through, we can expect to see some retailers passing off that extra cost to the consumer and that means that american shoppers could be in for some sticker shock at the register. As of yesterday, 200 billion dollars worth of chinese goods are being taxed at 25 , up from 10 . The majority of those products are things that manufacturers buy, like raw materials, but about 40 billion dollars worth of consumer items are also affected. These are things that americans purchase regularly. At the grocery store, you can expect to soon pay more for food items and paper products. At Department Stores highticket items like handbags electronics and furniture will also cost more. Nearly 6,000 products are subject to the 25 tariff. And american shoppers have some mixed feelings about the stand off with china. Theres a lot of Little People that will be affected by the fact that they cant afford these things that were affordable yesterday. Overall if it would help, i would be okay. I would probably just stop spending as much. If i had to take a hit to impro improve our country in that way, then im happy to do it. The president has stressed that this strategy will ultimately be good for america, and told retailers in a tweet, build your products in the u. S. And there are no tariffs. But experts say depending on how long this lasts, it could be disastrous for businesses. 10 is an annoyance, 25 gets to be serious calculation about whether youre still doing business and whether you want to redo your supply chains. There is a chance that this could be worked out before retailers are forced to jack up prices. Items that left china after 20 01 12 01 a. M. On friday are subject to the new tax rate but anything already in transit will be taxed at the told rate of 10 . There is a window of time befobefore consumers and businesses feel the full impact. If they remain in place, it could cost the average American Family of four 700 some dollars extra a year. Jon . Jon thank you, jackie. We heard jackie say it will take three or four weeks for some of the merchandise to get here. They have that amount of time to get this thing solved. What are the chances . Theyve been working on it for 30 years, hard to imagine they would solve it in the way the administration wishes in that amount of time. The reason this came to an impasse this past week is that the Administration Says the chinese began to walk back some of the things they had already agreed to. Jon right, they had agreed to some of these conditions on paper and then said no. This raised eyebrows that the chinese were doing that, that they were walking back, when in fact thats been the negotiating tactic for years. Theres agreement and then theres kind of retrenchment. Agreement, retrenchment. The hope on the chinese part is that they can hold out long enough that the administrations change and people in the United States trade Representative Office change, and they can just continue to do business the way they wish. In this particular case, no matter what your politics are, about the trump administration, if youre a supporter or not a supporter, theres a lot of support for doing something strong, regarding china, that its kind of come to an impasse. The Business Community is behind doing something. The public i think, the europea argued. But theres a strong support for taking china jon curiously even chuck schumer, the top democrat in the u. S. Senate has supported what President Trump is doing. It is interesting. It is not just tariffs. We are seeing a decline in Chinese Investment in u. S. Companies. Why is that . The u. S. Is being much tougher on what they are allowing the chinese to invest in so that intellectual property isnt if its not stolen by the chinese that it is not bought by the chinese. They are being much stickier on granting visas to students coming into the United States. At a certain point, there needs to be reciprocity between the two economic systems, between the two trading systems. What we allow the chinese to do in the United States, the u. S. Needs to be allowed to do in the chinese market. Jon the president is getting quite a bit of backing from republicans on this. Listen to representative roger marshall, a kansas republican, on the Agriculture Committee who says folks at home are taking this okay. Listen. Ive talked to thousands of farmers, and not one bad word about the president. It amazes me. They are the greatest patriots i have ever seen. They are hanging in there, but it is tough times. I would just tell china enjoy eating your iphones, we have good beef here in kansas. People need to stop buying iphones in china. Chinese have put tariffs on agriculture goods coming to china which means they are selling less to china. Whether or not thousands have agreed with him, i think theres probably some people that would disagree with this. But i think if the general public is probably behind something being done about china, whats very interesting is that theres an african swine flu epidemic in china right now. Pork is having to be slaughtered and not brought to market, putting more demand for pork products in the United States and other parts of the world than to china. China has its own problems. That and its own economic problems and its own strictures on what it has available and what it needs from abroad. It is a bit of a game of chicken right now between the United States and china. Jon this goes back over past administrations as you said, the obama administration, the bush administration, even the clinton administration, they have all had to wrestle with this china problem. Listen to what joe biden said about the president s approach to china. Listen. China is going to eat our lunch. Come on, man. They cant even figure out how to deal with the fact that they have this Great Division between the china sea and the mountains in the east i mean in the west. I mean, you know, theyre not bad folks, folks, but guess what . They are not competition for us. Jon that was the day he launched his campaign. They are not competition for us says the democratic frontrunner. I would have been interested to hear the full argument hes making because they are a competition for us. They are not only competition for us in the manufacturing sectors that we have lost to china, but they are now increasingly competition for global players, the u. S. , europe, other parts of the world, in hightech, in the high end part of the manufacturing curve. And thats where the United States now needs to be focused. Is it applying the resources necessary, education, investment, basic Science Research to prepare for the day when the chinese are going to come to the market with their own quantum Computing Products and other products at the very high end . Those are the issues being wrestled with now over intellectual property, over education systems, over access to the u. S. Market. Thats part of this bigger argument about tariffs. Tariffs is just kind of the latest iteration of that argument. John bussey wall street journal, good discussion, thank you. Pleasure. Theres no sleep or break or anything, constantly being attacked by these men, and they kept giving me drugs and giving me liquor and they just kept me hopped up. As a teenager she was the victim of sex traffickers forced into sex work traveling across america in the cab of a semi truck. I ended up calling in for help and he came in his truck and came and got me. Her story is frighteningly common, a young woman preyed upon by someone who promised her the world instead delivered her into hell. He got a hotel room, i spend the next days with five men i never knew. She was repeatedly raped by five men. It was the first of her horrible experiences. I would define Human Trafficking mostly related to commercial sex trafficking, labor trafficking. William sweeney is the assistant director in charge of the fbis new york field office. It is often targeting the most vulnerable in society, people that you might walk by every day, whether you go through a transit hub, whether youre at a hotel, and something that doesnt capture your attention right off the bat. The truth of the matter is in the years that ive worked with survivors of trafficking, over 90 are u. S. Citizens. Andrea powell, the founding president of the Advocacy Group has worked with trafficking survivors for years. The average face of a Trafficking Victim here in the nations capitol is a teenage girl of color between the ages of 16 and 19. Im a child sex trafficking survivor 678 kaylee greg of ohio is 18 now, a student, advocate and a survivor of the sex trafficking trade. It began when she was only 10. I was living with my mother at the time and she was very abusive. Many Trafficking Victims become ensnared at a young age. He said well, you come with me, and i can give you some place to sleep, some food, and so his family, they kind of got me to trust them, and then once i trusted them, they revealed their true nature, which was that they were sex trafficking ring. Kylie recounts the horrors of what she had to endure while being sold for sex. It was a living hell. I was on different substances and different drugs depending on the day. I had to have an illegal abortion when i was 11. That was performed on me by another girl who was in the trafficking ring, she was 13, and she had already had an illegal abortion herself. The u. S. Department of justice prosecuted 241 Human Trafficking cases in 2016. More than 95 of them related to sex trafficking. Those numbers, however, cannot illustrate the depravity of the traffickers who force their victims into lives of rape and abuse. In a typical day, where trafficking was what was happening, i mean i could see, you know, five, ten men in a day, but i mean, when it was all day, it was all day, and it was all day and all night.
