Wherever you are especially if you are in the eye of the storm, the threat for Hurricane Florence is a reality as conditions worsen by the minute. Fox news live Team Coverage, Griff Jenkins and Jonathan Siri live on the coast of North Carolina, todd pyro in myrtle beach, South Carolina and adam plots tracking the new path in the weather center. Lets begin with griff in Morehead City just south of the outer banks and you have been taking a beating. Hold on. Reporter it is picking up. We are getting the brunt of the wind coming in here and we are really watching the storm surge coming up over Atlantic Beach. They are getting hammered with wind and surf. I have been on the phone with you officials, Fire Department and rescue folks in new bern 40 miles northwest of here. They have are redone 200 rescues, 150 underway, two fema teams, the newburgh Fire Rescue Team is the oldest charter Fire Rescue Team in North Carolina. They are working frantically to get the number of calls coming in. When i called the emergency number to get through to Public Information she said we are getting hammered. Someone said i have chest up to my water and my house, got to get out, come get me, the situation is dire. That is why this combination of wind surge and flooding is happening, it is a problem because one of the major rivers that comes down here, all leading down here, this water comes in, it will go back out to see but as we saw with matthew a few years ago it is going to flood communities for days. There are two rivers, the trent river and noose river that surrounds the town of new bern. That is making things dangerous in terms of flooding. What is really significant is even matthew which was bad, irene was their worst, they already exceeded that, tween 9 feet this early, we have 24 more hours to go. Come back to Morehead City, we are seeing images of people putting streets, businesses being destroyed, getting the typical wind damage if you will of these winds and in Atlantic Beach they are totally cut off, riding it out hoping that storm surge doesnt go too high. Im watching this water line, these docs are flooding, two or three feet, you can imagine what is happening on the island side. They have a situation of being stranded for the next 24, 36 hours. As you know we have power lines all above ground. The absolute dangerous conditions you are going to have trying to maneuver even if emergency fire rescue is unbelievable, we see that playing out in new bern. I reached out with a few surrounding areas and in this area and places that are a little lower across the fringe to the north. The outer banks are getting the worst of it but it is coming straight down in these Barrier Islands as they are pushing it down south. One thing is for sure. We saw a year ago in houston with the amount of water they had to deal with, something that will develop as this day goes along. On the ocean side, around noon, that will be a critical point to watch as they monitor the storm surge in this area but clearly a bad situation happening inland all week. Im looking at your coverage, Morehead City, my it has a home nears there. She is not there right now but she is watching with interest. You talked about matthew and i looked at ray levels, 15 feet recorded in hurricane matthew. We are expecting much more, we could get 30 feet with the storm. Those winds, was that expected . Reporter it downgraded from a 4 to a 2 but i would say this is sustained wind of 70, 75 miles an hour i suspect, perhaps a few in excess of 90. An hour ago there was a reported gust at 92. Debris if you look here, this is what we are seeing, shingles flying left and right. When this it is unbelievably dangerous. We are probably going to wake up to a lot of damage from the wind people thought might be listened. Now it is here, it is real. That is why they say Pay Attention and dont let your guard down. Lets talk about the Power Outages, power already knocked out for hundreds of thousands of people. The worst is yet to come. Jonathan siri is live in Wrightsville Beach with the latest. Reporter 185,000 people without power and we are among them. The power started flickering, came back on for a few minutes and went out. Permanently. That creates a scary situation as the storm comes ashore. Everything is well lit, we have Battery Power at our lives location but if you walk a few feet in either direction it is pitch black. If you are out and about which officials urge there may be debris on the ground, live power lines on the ground. We have been going throughout the morning seeing green flashes as transformers are knocked out by heavy winds. There is the possibility that the eye of the storm could come over Wrightsville Beach. It is relatively calm, center of the storm but a lot of people are lulled into complacency and come out of their homes and shelters but because of the debris and potential for live power lines to be on the ground local officials are urging people to stay indoors until the storm completely passes. Dont be lulled into a false sense of security when the winds die down and it is only the eye. The other side of the eye wall comes over, you get hit with Hurricane Force winds in the opposite direction. A warning from emergency officials who despite hurricane conditions, we have seen a fire truck controlling the streets and dramatic swift water rescues up the coast from us in new bern taking place in these less than ideal far less than ideal hurricane conditions. Back to you. Reporter does it look like a lot of people heeded the warnings and evacuated as they were asked to do . Reporter yes. Here on Wrightsville Beach most people heeded the warnings. Many went to wilmington just over the channel on the mainland. Some people have gone far in land. Today, Charlotte Mecklenburg county schools, 200 miles in land in the city of charlotte and mecklenburg county, they canceled classes to accommodate evacuees all the way from the North Carolina coast. Heather thank you so much, stay safe, we will check back with you for an update. The worst of Hurricane Florence may be yet to come, we heard jonathan talking about where the i will pass. We are tracking the latest on that. Reporter here is the eye of the storm spinning 30 miles off the coasts of wilmington. If you are talking about the coast, 30 miles from wilmington, the coast is a little closer, likely the center of circulation no more than 10 or 15 miles from the coastline. We will see the winds that are most intense, lots and lots of rain along these areas, Flash Flood Warnings across the entire coast, the winds have been picking up and will continue to do so as the eye wall gets closer to the coastline. We are seeing ghosts on land of 71 miles an hour. These are current readings. We had reports of ghosts closer to 92, 93 miles an hour. Back over water buoys that pick up wind speeds, current gusts of 96 miles an hour, the high of 112 miles an hour. There is wind there. The thing about this is it is such a small over the wind has been consistent so you get hit by 50 mile an hour winds. That will continue to push this storm surge being forecast up to 8, 9, 10 feet and there are those water rescues in the new bern area. That is farther inland. All this water is being pushed by the wind and we had reports of storm surge up to 10 feet in those locations so that is enough to cause flooding in lowlying areas. It is already happening and they may have water levels even higher. The winds, talking about Hurricane Force wind that will linger for hours and hours and hours. The storm surge will linger as long as winds are there. This is an incredibly slow mover. We have been talking about that. When a storm moves slowly drops a bunch of rain. Heres the forecasted rainfall anywhere from the heavy areas, 20 inches to 30 inches of rain, widespread, 10 inches of rain. Even though we are talking about wind this is when the storm is getting closer to the coast ultimately in the next couple days it will turn into a story about rain, water and flooding. Heather i am reading about 35 miles east of wilmington, it is still over the water. What can or will that do in terms of the speed of the storm . Could speed up . Is there a possibility it could be upgraded as it is still over the water . Or are we pretty much seeing the end of it at this point . We are not seeing the end of the storm but it is locked in at 6 miles an hour. I dont think the speed will change. We will have her along the coast. 6 miles an hour, that is the problem. The area seeing wind and rain will continue. It wont move fast. Heather no possibility of an increase . The closer we get to land it will start to weaken. But because it is taking so long to get the land it will have her where it is for a while. Heather appreciate it. This is a live shot of myrtle beach courtesy of earth cam where things appear relatively quiet at this point but once again high winds expected and flooding is definitely a concern. Also in wilmington, North Carolina this is where things have picked up. Florences. Unleashing all along the area. High wind, we saw Griff Jenkins on the North Carolina coast, water rescues underway in new bern, 150 people appear to be trapped, water rescue going on and griff has been in touch with one of those people. And we will take you to another shot, North Carolina residents refused to evacuate along these areas, they are now hunkering down as Hurricane Florence closes in. Our next guest lives just 7 miles from the coast an hour from Wrightsville Beach which is what you are looking at. She decided to dig in, ride the storm out in her home. She joins me over the phone, thank you for joining us, how are you doing . We are fine, doing well. Heather you are 25 minutes from the coast, an hour south of wilmington, we saw winds picking up, an hour from Wrightsville Beach, what are you experiencing in terms of the weather conditions . Right now there are some wind gusts occasionally and some rain that started two hours ago. It is getting worse little by little but right now it is not bad at all. Heather why did you decide to ride it out . Were you under mandatory evacuation . We are under mandatory evacuation where we live. I am a retired nurse. My husband, retired law enforcement, kind of against our grain to leave. We are very prepared. We have a generator and draft and provisions and we have a home with pilings that help with the wind. We could have left as late as this afternoon but as the storm got less we felt we were safe here. We have a shelter two miles away. Heather you have written out big storms before. Tell me a little about the other storms you have experienced. We have been here 13 years. There have been several hurricanes and many Tropical Storms. The highest category we have been in was a high 2 so we have experienced that. When they tell you what five is coming that can be scary. Heather i am from North Carolina and have a lot of family in that area. When you hear those initial reports, you can never be too prepared. It is important for people to know the potential of what is coming and thankfully it goes down like this. The high wind and flooding is a concern. Your daughter did evacuate. She lives along the coast. Where about . She lives north of here in Carolina Beach and right on the oceanfront. As far as i know there is no one in Carolina Beach, certainly hope not because they need to evacuate. Heather are you concerned about Power Outages . We have power and we are fine. We have all of our utilities which is great and we have a generator. Heather do most folks around there have generators . Some do, some dont. Heather they know what is coming when storms hit especially in september on the North Carolina coast. What about your neighbors . Did any of them evacuate . Some did. About 25 houses in our neighborhood, probably ten of us. The rest evacuated somewhere. Heather you said you have a shelter of the road. The shelter is a couple miles from us. We live in Brunswick County and they have free shelters. They very quickly all went pet friendly. Animal protective services was there to help with pets. We felt confident. Heather i want to ask one more question, speaking of pets. Animals not wanted, you brought up a good point, you were speaking with one of our producers, reptiles, dont think of that often but that is a concern after the storm as well. It absolutely can be. All the alligators and snakes and reptiles are pushed by the flooding and you have to be much more careful because you never know when you might run into one. Firefighters have rescued hundreds. 200,000 customers are without power throughout the state of North Carolina and in Morehead City, lifethreatening storm surge tearing apart businesses. For days officials have been talking about the lifethreatening storm surge, the Weather Channel is pulling out all the stops to show viewers how dangerous this storm could be. 6 feet of water carries large objects like cars that connect as battering rams and enhance damage and we know that conflict lower levels of many structures. I saw so many people on social media tweeting and read tweeting, if that isnt enough to convince you to evacuate the nothing will. Another twitter user writing it is fantastic, gives you perspective on the disaster and jason with a little suggestion saying janice dean the weather machine needs to get one of those. The finance department would have something to say. Air b b offering free shelter for evacuees. They are helping evacuees and rescue workers find a place to stay, waving the accommodation fee and this will take place until october 1st, giving people a long time to stay free of charge when disasters occur, they have 11,000 people find shelter since 2012. They need all the help they can get. We talk about the zoo animals. Hurricane florence is not just affecting people but pets. What will happen to the animals at the zoo . The riverbank zoo in South Carolina tweeted out this message that they continue Hurricane Florence prep, 40 plumbing goes indoors to ensure the animals safety and wellbeing. Some report they are moving animals into underground enclosures that can withstand wind and that means zoo workers and vets, veterinarians will stick around. And to make sure those animals day safe. Heather the full force of Hurricane Florence slamming the carolina coast, hundreds of thousands of people in his are conquering it down to wait it out. The category one storm moving slowly but bringing dangerous flooding. 5 reports from Griff Jenkins and todd pyro, but we begin with adam klotz who has been here all night long. You have been doing great work. The storm getting closer to the coast and it looks like you are sitting on top of it. Vi wall has not made landfall, still a category one storm. It is 35 miles from wilmington but that was an hour ago. Likely closer to 30 miles at a 6 mile an hour pace, maybe closer. That is wilmington over there. Getting to the coast probably 10 miles away. The firewall is where these bands wrap around bringing heavy rain, these bands of absolute downpours following on the same location over and over again for hour after hour. That is why everything you are looking at highlighted in these red boxes are Flash Flood Warnings. Im sure their standing water in most of these locations on top of the wind that in getting closer in these locations was we had of wind gusts, and each of these locations 62 miles an hour in wilmington out to see. That is off the coast. The highest i have seen, 112 miles an hour. Still strong wind moving closer to the coast. Everything you are looking at in the yellow, 40 miles an hour. That is fueling the storm surge. These are forecasted storm surges but everything you see will get to 8 or 9 feet. Storm surge is the ocean water, the bay water ultimately getting 10 feet or landing in your living room. New bern is an area with a lot of rescues. We havent forecasted a 10 to 12 feet of storm surge. We have gotten a report of water up 10 feet. That is an issue for them. It will continue to be. The wind field is going to last as long as the storm moves along the coast. The spots im talking about seeing winds for 24 to 48 hours. It will be relentless. The other thing that will be relentless because it is such a slow mover is tomorrow evening. Not a lot of movement, continues to move slow. The slower it moves the more time it has to pick up water from the ocean but we are talking about big rainfall totals, 15 to 25, 30 inches of rain on top of that storm surge that might not have had a chance to retreat yet. So there will be a water issue. I think over time the problem in a couple days will be all the water that causes damage. Heather you are mentioning levels that would be higher than matthew when it hit the North Carolina coast, there were 28 deaths so definitely needs to be aware of that and be careful. 24 hours it will last and hover. Will be hovering. By tomorrow afternoon and evening likely moving past the South Carolina coast which is right there. Not a lot of movement in the next 24 hours. We will check back with adam. Hurricane florence pounding North Carolina leaving a path of destruction. You heard adam mention 90 mile an hour winds lashing the coast as communities begin to flood. Griff jenkins in Morehead City where the storm is so strong it is hard to stand up. You can hear me, the medications are different but i have to talk about something, the situation in new bern. I have been in contact with the officials. There are two fema teams helping with the rescues, the Fire Department came to rescue people, 150 plus, they are going to need more assets. If youre in washington watching this report, get in touch with new bern officials, they will need more, the number of calls going for help, people stranded saying im up to my chest, after my waste in my living room, on my roof, please get me, starting to overwhelm the officials in new bern. In Morehead City, Atlantic Beach over a mile away, getting hammered by wind and surge. In new bern in land, 40 miles northwest of where i am, a story that is going to grow and become worse and worse and lifethreatening as catastrophic as it is and officials saying they will need more assets, more resources. This kind of wind, you have downed power lines, Power Outages, but the noose river is a major river along with the trent river that circles new bern, cresting at 9 feet. The worst they got was eight feet, they already exceeded that. The calls are coming in. We will work on communication. That is what i want to get out, there is a focus on new bern. It is likely the situation is the same in other surrounding areas like jacksonville and other lowlying areas surrounded by rivers. It all feeds down here. And 24, 36 hours hopefully this stops, the ocean water goes back out to sea, in land that water has nowhere to go, rivers exploding. This water will become very unhealthy very quickly. It will be a situation and a big disaster. Heather i dont think you can hear me so i wont ask any questions but important for him to stay safe. Keep us updated on what is going on. The white house send 4000 government workers to be involved in the efforts to prepare and clean up after florence. They were sending in 1000 workers but once again if you are listening and you saw griff talking about the situation in new bern, North Carolina, lots of people trapped, swift water rescues underway to get those people out and they are saying they need more help to rescue those people. Hopefully that will happen and we will keep you updated as it develops. As Hurricane Florence churns closer to the coast, a slowmoving storm, it is threatening to flood in land areas. Todd pyro joins us from middle beach, South Carolina just down the coast. Quite a difference. The wind does appear to be picking up. Reporter absolutely. The wind picked up ten minutes ago as we were setting up for this live shot. We lost power. We worried we couldnt do the live shot but miraculously arrived. You can see, you used to be able to see, you can see now the sparking on that powerful, a situation we want to avoid. With regard to the wind it has been in and out in terms of gusts. We are getting a good one. Before it was pretty peaceful but this is something we have to monitor throughout the course of the day. There are Tropical Storm warnings in the following counties, chesterfield, lee, sumter, calhoun, and orangeburg. Tropical storm watches for lancaster, kershaw, fairfield, richmond and lexington counties. Lancaster county is 140 miles inland from myrtle beach showing how expensive the storm is. Winds are always a concern in a hurricane, a huge worry with florence in South Carolina is all that lifethreatening water. Something else you may not have heard before, you have landslides as a result of this and that is because we 7 inches of rain, this is still a very dangerous storm not only on the coast but the interior of the state and it will last two days. Heather the National Weather service issued a Flash Flood Warning from now until sunday night. We see some projections for our area that go to the 30 inches range. Heather the danger has not passed yet. It is very slow moving. You have to watch the water and the wind. Appreciate it. Hurricane florence banners the carolina coast from South Carolina to North Carolina, 200,000 residents ordered to evacuate lowlying areas of virginia. That is the expanse of the storm. Really wide. Virginia beach has got lucky, we expected three or four days ago to have a real impact on florence, the city and state put a lot of effort in, starting with evacuation of the bay, mandatory evacuation zones. Current weather is very calm, very light winds gusted 30 mph but right now we see a different picture than we expected to see three or four days ago. We are thinking about our friends in North Carolina and South Carolina taking the brunt of florence. Heather you have written out storms before, tell us about the others you have experienced compared to this one. I have been here all my life but the storm we have seen has a devastating impact on the region. This is a great region very well prepared for situations like this, storms in the summer and hurricanes that impacted us in the past. This is not having the effect we were expecting but you got to prepare for the worst and hope for the best and the navy did took dave safety precautions, a lot of families hunkered down and heated the evacuation and others came to friends and family. And to pool together and prepare for storms, we are fortunate the impact of the storm does not impact Virginia Beach like expected. Looks like caroline and South Carolina taking the brunt of this. Heather do you know anyone in that area . You said you are next to the mandatory evacuation zone. Do you know anyone that did choose to get out . Schools shut down tuesday this week in preparation so there has been a lot of time to prepare as you get ready for florence. A lot of businesses closed and to make sure everyone was prepared whatever the storm was going to do. Everybody is being safe and took the seriously leading up to today. We are located in wrightsville, North Carolina. We are getting the strongest winds in the inner core of this hurricane and we have seen the entire night sky lit up by power flashes, debris came flying past us from signs, we have seen multiple trees come down and we have seen minor damage to homes and we fear that will get worse as the eye approaches the coast. Heather since youre in the thick of it and moving around, have you seen people outside who are not supposed to be outside . Does it appears you people did evacuate and heed the warnings . It has been practically a ghost town around wilmington, even on the beaches. On the beaches there is a mandatory evacuation in effect. Nobody is allowed on the island.
