He wants to increase top Capital Gains on couples above 500,000. Its been raised under obama from 15 to 23. 8 . He wants to soak the banks with more fees and the money will go to what . What the president says are tax breaks for the middle class. A 500 second earner tax break which will encourage both spouses to work. Child care tax credit being hiked, and expanding a earned income tax credit which is basically free money to lower income workers. Right. Up to 3,000 per child under the age of 5 now. Theres a cap on the income up to 210,000 in the family household. The 500 for two working parents would only go to the 200,000 threshold. Look, the president is making the case hes made many times before. Were going to soak the rich. They have the money. You have none. Youre not going to feel it at all. Not a romantic thing. Giveaway the ticket. You can travel together or not. And here we are today. I think when we heard the story were thinking its a chance for him to find love again then you wont have to change the embroidery and everything. You have the name ready. Exactly. Thats not how it turned out. She was already taken . Well, let me be explicitly clear. It was never a romantic endeavor at all. It was trying to do something good and give them the opportunity they wouldnt have had otherwise. Quinn ended up traveling with me. She had a boyfriend that was a huge plus when it came down to it. It removed a little bit of the pressure from the media speculation. But quinn and i have a brother and sister relationship. That came about somewhat naturally and to me thats the best outcome of the whole thing. I couldnt have imagined it. I dont believe you. [ laughter ] new york, milan venice, hong kong, new deli and other places. There was never any dinner or bistro that flowered into Something Else . I dont buy that well, you can believe what you wish, but well, you know, it is. Its the old statement of why ruin a good story by telling the truth, right . Im sorry. I apologize. I wish it was a romantic ending but its not. I have to ask. She has a boyfriend. Yeah. If im in his shoes right. Youre not going on that trip honey i have something to bring up to you tonight. I want to go on a around the world trip with a guy i dont know him. Sure. Go ahead. How is the boyfriend on board with this . He was very supportive. Theyve been together for a long time, and, you know, it wasnt how the whole them was framed and enreality of the situation he was supportive. He was jealous he wasnt going on the trip as well. He wanted to visit a lot of these countries. Is there a small part that wished there were 18 Elizabeth Gallaghers who tried out for the position to get to go with you. Tried out. Maybe i should have picked one of the others . One of the single ones . No. Not at all. In fact, it was the opposite. I thought the fact that quinn had a boyfriend was a real benefit to the whole thing. Because, look the only reason were doing any media around it today is all about you know what things turned into with the charity of ticket it forward. Ultimately it was never a romantic endeavor. It was a nice sort of occurrence. To be honest at the end of the day the applicants from 20 to 64 from all sort of life situations. It wasnt just quinn had a partner. Many were married. Other had longterm boyfriends and partners. To me thats a testament of adventure and experiencing and not having everything be about romance as the end game. Were going to ask you about the charity. What is it ticket forward and how can we learn more . Sure. Essentially when the story first broke i got thousands of email around the world from people who havent had the opportunity to travel. Many of those were people that, you know, are overcoming abuse, overcoming poverty. Some were terminally ill. The stories were heartbreaking, inspiring, and everything in between. They asked how can i see the world. I didnt have an answer. And i started to look at the charitable landscape and theres no one out there doing this kind of work. Ultimately what we ended up doing over the span of a couple of weeks is creating a registering a legitimate charity registered in california called a ticket forward. Its dedicated to sending survivors of abuse survivors of cancer, and survivors of warfare on the trip of a lifetime with the general belief that travel, especially after hardship in your life can be transformative. Also, increase top Capital Gains rates on couples with incomes above 500,000 to 28 . Its been raised under president obama from 15 to 23. 8 . Pay couples for both that work and give the middle class and the working class more money from the earned income tax credit. The big idea here again, is that take money from a small group of people the rich, as defined by the president , and you filter it through washington. Lots of it sticks to government and government bureaucrats they take their cut. And you give the rest out as charity so people are grateful to you as a leader and vote for your party again. Here is one area the republicans may have the agreement. Impose a fee on big Financial Firms with assets over 50 billion. But you mentionedth 500 for the second earner tax credit in families working so both spouses working. They each get a 500 tax credit for the year. Yeah. Thats what your money would go to. Expanding the child care tax credit up to 3,000 per child under the age of 5 and expanding the earned income tax credit to workers without children. Its so interesting the idea behind this and the president said were going address income inequality and falling wages or stagnant wages for the middle class. What they dont mention and the irony behind this is income inequality has risen faster. Wangs have been more stagnant than under any president in american history. It doesnt result in more equality. It hallowed 0 out the middle class. President obama pitting democrats against republicans saying the gop needs to put aside the games if we want to get any work done. Listen to the president. Our job is to make sure that every american feels theyre a part of our countrys come back. Thats what ill focus on in my state of the union. How to build on our momentum with rising wages growing incomes, and a stronger middle class. Well i think that people in the philippines see the pope as someone who is coming to bring them the message of jesus love, his compassion, and especially for the poor. The pope said this trip was all about the poor. He wanted to come and be with the people who have suffered so much during last years typhoon. He did that. He went to their city even though a storm was heading towards the city and the people had to stand out in the rain and he was saying mass in the rain. He wanted to come and show them how much he loved them. How he wanted to be with them. And secondly, he wanted to focus on the issue of poverty. You know, onethird of the children in the philippines live in poverty. And he wanted to be there with them to weep with them. To cry out that something needs to be done to take care of these children. So what is his message for poverty . Is it a message to the poor about how to live with being poor . A message to the rest of us about how to help the poor . What can we take away from it . This is a twofold message. The pope always speaks about our responsibility. But he tells us about our responsibility to one another. And the responsibility of governments to work for the common good. And to deal with the structure barriers to help create poverty. So his message is multiple in that sense. Hes very concerned that the poor not be left out. They not be marginalized. These are people who just dont make it in the marketplace. They need a help. They dont want to you know, they dont want to be subsidized. They dont want to be treated like charity cases. They want jobs. They want decent jobs. They want good education so they can help their children to prosper. Yeah, job training and education is a great ticket for them to make a better life for themselves. What can we take away from the message that the pope gave there in the philippines here in america . Well, i think that the message that the pope gave is one that has been throughout his pagan si. We have to be concerned about the poor. They have to be a piratety. They were a priority for jesus. This is a message that has been constant in his preaching. That when the poor are left out of any kind of Economic System then the Economic System is flaw flawed. They need to be focussed on. They need to be cared for. They need to be helped. That raises a lot of questions, i mean, we did a multimillion dollar overhaul of the va after their last scandal. Were fixing to do a reduction where between 200,000 troops across the branchs of service. If the system is having problems now, what is going to happen when you add that many more to it . The white house getting big preview of the state of the Union Address this week. And the president has released the details of his plan. If you read the New York Times this morning you would have thought that this was all about reducing taxes and really helping out america. But if you break it down the opposite side of this this could be seen as a tax increase on the wealthy. Here is the president s plan. Eliminate a tax break on inheritances. So the big tax that when an estate is handed down. You see an increase in taxes there. Capital gains rate would go up to 28 from 15 when the president came into office. Thats right. And also impose a fee on Financial Firms with assets of more than 50 billion. Right. So in return that is what hes taking. The pitch is we tax the rich people you never meet. See on television. Theyre the only ones that pay for it. And youll reap the benefits. That will include a 500 second earner tax credit for families who are both spouses work. The federal government would be subsidizing having two parents in the work force. Expand the child care tax credit up to 3,000 for kids under the age of 5. And expand the earned income tax credit to workers without children it was thought up by republicans years ago. Transfer payment basically payment of people with jobs. Harkin back to 2008 and when the president was on the campaign trail running for the first time and joe the plumber asked him in northwest ohio about his tax policy for Small Business owners too. He basically said when you spread the wealth around its good for everybody. So the redistribution of wealth is nothing new. A big point on the 500 second earner tax credit for families and also 3,000 for Child Tax Credit thats for families who are capped at 210,000 in annual income tax. Anything above that they wont get that credit. President obama in the weekly radio address laying out he wants the gop to put aside their petty games and get some work done. Thats what he said. Our job now is to make sure that every american feels theyre a part of our countrys comeback. Thats what ill focus on in my state of the union. How to build on our momentum with wising rages, growing incomes and a stronger middle class. And ill call on this new congress to join me in putting aside the political games and finding areas where we agree so we can deliver for the American People. That is a petty little game. This wont pass through congress. And the deeper irony president obama said its needed to combat income inequality. Both of which have come worse during his presidency. The idea that taking money from a tiny group of people filtering it through washington enriching bureaucrats every day and giving it to people in the form in the effect of welfare will make the country stronger . What people need are legitimate private sector jobs that pay living wages. Its how they pay their bills. This does nothing. And critics would say if you want to talk about games the president is playing games. It wont pass anyway and its designed to enrage republicans. He physically became him. Gained the weight. Growing the beard but mentally became him. Its about the eyes. The internal performance. Every time you see chris kyle take a shot in the movie its the way eastwood districts it and you see coopers eyes change. Its a performance, for me that solidifies him as one of the best actors working now. One of the few actors who has been able to shed a franchise. The guy from the hang over for three movies and you never see that character anymore. Its unbelievable what hes been able to do. Its a phenomenal film. Eastwoods best movie since 34r river. We understand you changed your ratings on this to a new rating. What happened here . Heres what happened. I volt on the movies for a local affiliate here in washington, d. C. , for the Washington Area film association. So when i originally saw the movie it was on a tiny screen in thanksgiving and i gave it a 4 1 2 out of five. I saw it with my family over christmas and it hit me so much more. I went from a 4 1 2 to a 5. It is one of the films that just hit me more emotionally the second time around. Ive seen it three times now. And the third time i saw it i saw in imax and the sound quality of the movie. Its unbelievable. Clint eastwood did a phenomenal jobs. Its one of the movies i saw in 2014. Worth the five out of five. Wow. You talked to Bradley Cooper about how the film was shot. Lets listen to that. Are we seeing what youre seeing how does that work . Well, i mean you talk about technically . Technically no. Its different because youre looking at points of view and you have to put the camera where my eye would be and youre on the tracking thing. Its all very technical. And thats just sort of challenge of making a movie is you have to add you have to put the sense of organic in the moment. In a technical environment. Theyre very different men and of course this pope has much Higher Energy level than Pope John Paul ii had in the wayning year of his papacy but theres also a lot of similarities. Theyre really rock stars in a way. Theyre so genuine and authentic and, you know, this pope lives that simple life. Hes not a hypocrite in anyway. He has given up on a lot of the thrills of the office. He lives in a modest two room apartment in a little guest house inside the vatican so he walks the walk and people respect that as well. And he said yeah man its directedly Clint East Wood and then i called them and of course right away he started ribbing me. Hollywood. You thought it was a spam message. You almost deleted it. I seriously did, yeah. Wow, thats crazy. Take me back to the story and to what happened to you in iraq on that faithful day when your humvee hit that ied. Yeah that was a long day at the office for sure. We were on a react and we hit a triple stack and i was in the lead vehicle in the drivers seat and the pressure plate ignited. As soon as the front left tire hit the pressure plate goes down. Bomb goes off. Blew upright underneath me. Blew me to the top of the humvee. I like to say because gods a comedian i never lost consciousness or went into shock. I remember the whole thing. That was a rough day at the office for sure. Its an amazing ending to the story. Then youre in the hospital being treated. You look up, doctor says to you, female doctor says to you we may have to not only amputate your leg we may have to take this ring finger off your hand. Your hand got mangled. What did you say to her and what ended up happening. It was a doctor it wasnt her but it was a doctor that said jake wed like to amputate your fourth didgit and i said if i wake up from this operation and theres anything else amputated off my body dont be on the right side of my bed because theres nothing wrong with my right arm and ill choke you out. So he said i take that as a no . And i said yeah thats a no. But she asked me after the fact just to prove her professionalism and how seriously she takes her job. She said why wouldnt you let hem amputate your fourth digit and i said because one day im going to find a woman that loves me just the way i am and ill wear a ring on that finger proudly and it will have a use then. Hook line and sinker. Did you ever see that woman again . Yeah, were married now. We just had our nine year anniversary. Ended well for me. Unbelievable story. She found an incredible person. Now, you have your leg of course amputated after the ied explosion. Youre getting on skis to help wounded veterans. Explain this to me. Youre doing remarkable things here. Yeah, listen you know, im a glutton for punishment. My buddy runs the Adaptive Training Foundation and were doing this through the High Five Foundation and david was like hey, jake, i need you to do this skiing scene and they want to make a documentary about it and originally i was like im not doing that and five minutes later i was like yeah ill do it. So what it is is hes training me to get on skis again and snowboard. Im doing both. Ski and snowboard over a five day period out in lake tahoe in march. So hes setting me up and training me to do it. Hes not nice to me in the gym. Thats the only place that we dont get along. But its awesome because it gives me a chance to show other warriors that have been wounded and anyone if youve been in a car wreck or tragic accident it doesnt matter the physical limitations you have your mentality can take you much further than you physically think you can. Certain dogs really benefit from coats. Thats small dogs, young dogs and dogs that have thinning hair coats. She is all of those things. Shes a chihuahua mix. She does have a thinning coat and shes really little. I wanted a coat that covered up her belly. She will be close to the ground. I have a big yellow lab at home. He hates his coat i make him wear. He thinks you make me wear this dumb thing. He doesnt like putting it on but if its under 20 degrees he needs it. I probably would. It allows him to stay more active. When she gets out there and is playing in the puddles you can wash that throw in the wash piece of cake. They get more exercise. Exactly. Even big dogs. Exactly. So a lot about going out in the rain. Today is miserable for dogs. So i found this awesome little raincoat that actually has an umbrella, the hood acts like an umbrella and goes right over the top of his head. Is there a shame factor . There is. You have to be really secure. But is your dog humiliated. I really love that they can see really well and hear really well too. And calvins paws are covered in boots. These are adorable. The lights are super cool. Great for visibility but the important thing is it gives him lots of traction and protects him from the ice and the salt and theres a great band that goes around the bottom because if you find a boot that doesnt have this band theyre going to fall off. Youll have a threepawed boot dog. You can buy one that have a strap in them. Not worth it. So if you cant do boots though you can do you need to take care of their feet like with wipes. She has been out in the ice and snow and salt and we need to clean off her paws. Anything that goes on the foot goes in the mouth. Thats my rule of thumb. So if youre going to put anything on the feet to sooth them clean them off my dog is going to lick this. Same with this paw butter that we have too. Really moisturizing especially if you have dogs that have dry, cracked paws which really happens in the wintertime. This one is blissful dog. Everything in it is organic. What about ice melter for people that live in cold communities where theres a lot of snow . Absolutely. If you can find something salt free that would be the best. Dogs dont like the salt. Thats one area that actually the president is going to continue to dig in in and say no were not going to change this the idea that you get tax when you bring that money back and by the Way Companies are going to keep that money there and sit on that money and thats not going to go in the way of job creation. It is a mistake in terms of continuing to make it so difficult for these Companies Large and small. Its just mindless and counter counterproductive. You say theres some that arent as good. Theow oil prices and continuing to see this drop in oil. Oil prices down 20 over the last year. The conversation all of us have been having and the conversation throughout wall street and main street is im paying lower than 2 a gallon for gasoline. Im going to take that extra money that i have and im going to go spend it. Heres what happened in december. Down in terms of retail sales. People are not spending that money that they have saved as a result of lower gasoline prices but the negative that has happened as a result of low gasoline prices are Oil Companies are cutting jobs and this whole idea that the shale revolution has been the place where job creation has happened thats seeing a dent put into it. Since 2007 all the jobs created. All the jobs created since 2007 have been in texas and now were seeing a dent in the shale revolution. Its just not as economic for the smaller and mid cap Shale Companies to continue the projects that they were on. Youre seeing rig cancellations and lay offs. Bp Oil Companies are cutting jobs. So theres a concern. You have big guests on that topic and more this morning. We have dan coming up to talk about the falling gasoline prices. I dont think theres many people out there that feel we have bottomed out. Oil prices will continue to go down.
