There were 31 questions after the press briefing for the president and 20 of them were about Bob Woodwards comments. President trump explaining why he didnt want to create a panic over covid19. Steve this according to the recordings. He had 18 interviews with journalist bob woodward. Im the leader of the country. I cant be jumping up and down and scaring people. I dont want to scare people. I want people not to panic, and thats exactly what i did. If you look at the representatives of jorkd. You see what they were saying. They are saying no problem. This wont be a problem. He didnt think it would be a problem until months later. He was way late. On the campaign trail biden slamming the president accusing him of lying to the American People. He lied. Thats wrong. Thats totally irresponsible. Totally irresponsible. Protection act . Kick him out of office. And Speaker Pelosi was quick to pounce on the re labor relation. We understood better than he let on when he was calling it a hoax. His delay, distortion about and denial about the threat is responsible for many of the deaths and infections that we have today. But dr. I didnt really see any discrepancy between what he told us and what we told him and what he ultimately came out publicly and said. Griff now woodward himself is coming under scrutiny asking why he waited so long to come forward. Woodward pushing back saying an earlier disclosure would not have saved any lives. Half of the people of america do not get a flu shot and the flu right now is far deadlier. So if you are freaked out at all about the coronavirus, you should be more concerned about the flu. For the vast majority of new yorkers life is going on pretty normally right now and we want to encourage that. When it became clear that apparently masks probably worked when you look at the sasse virus which was part of it was because there werent enough masks around and people would greek out. Look i have got to get a mask from somebody. But, nonetheless, its one of those things where and the president perfectly set it up. And then the montage bouquet of soundbites reiterated the fact that the president said i did not want people to freak out. And then we heard from all those leaders and other people who said no reason to panic. Ainsley. Well, you know whats interesting about this. We have all written books. And the timing of this is interesting. Were less than two months out from an election and seeing his niece write a negative book about him. Seeing Michael Cohen book. This book come out. Time to sell their books because america is trying to make a decision and they want to know the facts. Last night the president was on with sean hannity. He said the timing of this is very important. He said woodward does jobs with everybody. Including president obama and president bush. But if you look at the timeline of all of this, the president came out in january, first case here in america was identified on january 21st. 10 days later the president put the china travel ban into effect. That was on january 31st. Then on february 2nd, thats when you heard that sound bite of Governor Cuomo saying there is no reason to panic. Hes a democrat. He said there is no reason to panic. Then on february 7th, a few days later. The president said the virus was maybe five times worse than the flu. On that same day. New York Health Commissioner said we are telling new yorkers to go about your lives. Take the subway. Go out and enjoy life. Then a few days later on february 11th, joe bidens advisor, ron Kayleigh Mcenany sai ron klain. Evidence sugges not. Then, on february 24th, nancy pelosi stands in chinatown and says come down to chinatown. We are all here. We are careful. We are careful. We are safe and come join us. Then, on march 2nd, a few days later cuomo then says we dont think its going to be as bad as it was in other countries. And then on march 23rd, real clear politics in an interview with dr. Fauci said as griff mentioned didnt get the sense that trump was dedistorting anything about corona. Nothing different than public or private conversations. And what we have heard from leaders on both sides, is that during times of trouble, our leaders know whats going on behind the scenes but they dont want us to freak out. Did we know everything back then that we know now . No, absolutely not. And so when bob board ward brings out these recordings it looks like ah ha, nonetheless, when you hear the president to say i dont waniwant them to cak out. Does that make sense to you . Fast forward, look at that 8 years later . There are 12,400,000. So, in other words, they actually lost manufacturing jobs whereas during this administration somehow apparently they found that magic wand because they added a bunch before the coronavirus unless steve cortes one of the president s surrogates feels that its ironic that mr. Ainsley you are welcome. Ainsley every day you get up, you cisz your loved ones goodbye. You put your uniform on and badge on and face the unknowns, what exactly are officers and Police Chiefs going through . Well, in for chief hall, i think that, you know, she started the class of leaders. It wasnt just the leaders but the very officers who served under her leadership, you know, from the beginning. She came in agenda in her agenda didnt include the most teble youred commanders on the department. She demoted a lot of them and it didnt go over well. I think the beginning of her decline was when hundreds were arrested, including those who marched on the city bridge during the george floyd protest. Most of them were charged and then the charges were immediately dropped. This made the city look really, really bad. And everyone knows that politicians hate to look bad. So i think under these circumstances, its just time, you know, it looks like these officers need someone to fight for them. They need to fight for each other. The Dallas Police department as well as all the Law Enforcement profession as a whole, they are under attack at this time and saved. Dallas Police Officers are looking for a leader who can take on the role and fight for them. They want a lead tore leads from the front and the city is facing historical, you know, murders, robberies, Violent Crimes and, you know, just as you said, when an officer puts on their uniform and their badge and they leave their loved ones and families at home, they are facing the unknown. They just want to know that they have someone thats going to have their back. Under these circumstances, chief hall, she has done the best that she can, but she has faced a lot of adversity. And so i think that she feels like its time to, you know, pull out because its the best time. Ainsley she is not alone. She wrote in a letter. She said that the city has dealt with unthinkable events series of events and she added that she was proud of implementing her reforms and she resigned. Like i said, she is not alone. 13 Police Chiefs have stepped down. Three in texas, one in new york. Three in south carolina. Illinois, washington, two in virginia. One in georgia and one in oregon. So, when were looking at replacements for these individuals, what exactly who needs to have these leadership roles . Well, i think leadership they need to be someone who is strong who is not afraid to voice their opinions, who is going to have the officers back. Ultimately thats what the department needs. They need one going to take on the role of leadership. Who is not going to be afraid to stand up to these politicians and say absolutely not. Who is not going to be afraid to write letters and to say and come to the table in respect of the Police Officer and say hey, this is what we need. Officers are needing that because they are bailing left and right. Officers are leaving these large cities and going to smaller cities where they are appreciated. Because they feel like they need to be appreciated. So does the chief. They feel like this is the time to bail because the appreciation isnt there. Ainsley is that how you felt when you retired . When i retired, let me tell you, i left. I called in on Christmas Day and said, you know what . This is my last day. They thought are you going to go on vacation. I said no, this is it for me. This President Trump intentionally misleads the American People about the threat of covid. How can a president bear no responsibility for the 200 almost 200,000 lives lost . Joe concha is on the story that they might not be telling you. I was sworn into the United States senate in a hospital. My wife and daughter had been killed in an automobile crash, and lying in the bed were my two little boys. Im surprised, steve, that these reporters that were quoting the woodward book back to Kayleigh Mcenany in that particular press conference or back to President Trump didnt do their homework in terms of what President Trump had said at the time to reporters the same time he was speaking to woodward back in march and back in april during those 18 interviews. Let me quote, donald trump apris really easy to be negative about. But i want to give people hope. You know, im a here cleare cher leader for the country exactly what he told woodward. We are going through the worst thing this country has ever seen. This was six months ago that he told reporters. This so when people are focusing on the fact that he didnt want to cause a panic or be a cheerleader for the country he literally said that in the room in the james brady press Briefing Room. Lets go back and look at what dr. Fauci told john roberts yesterday saying quote i didnt get a sense he was distorting anything. When he would go out and speak to reporters i would hear him discussing the same sort of things. Remember, dr. Fauci said not to buy masks back in march. It was Surgeon General adams who literally tweeted in quotes caps seriously people, stop buying masks. April 6th, three weeks after donald trump spoke to bob woodward specifically about his reaction to coronavirus and not wanting to cause a panic. Quote. Robert redfield, director of the cdc, if we just socially distance we will see this virus and this outbreak basically decline, decline, decline. And i think thats what you are seeing. So, again, go back and look at the statements of the president or fauci or redfield or adams and you will get the same sort of timeline and the expectations that were being said at the time that we are reading now in the woodward book that everybody is so surprised about. Do your homework and you will see its not such a surprise. Steve it wasnt such a surprise. You know, of the president said yesterday to sean hannity he didnt want to freak people out. But thats what leaders do. In times of adversity, you try to keep people calm so they can get up in the morning and do their jobs and things like that. But, nonetheless, you know, people in the Briefing Room were suggesting that President Trump was negligent. He should have alerted people and lives would have been saved; however, you know, as President Trump says, i was trying to keep people calm. Look at the tweet that president obama put out on march 4th. He said protect yourself and your community from coronavirus with common sense precautions. Wash your hands, stay home when sick, and listen to the cdc gov and local authorities. Save the masks for healthcare workers. Lets stay calm, listen to the experts, and follow the science. When he is talking about stay calm. Remember, at the time, you mentioned the masks because they didnt have enough medical masks for everybody. People would have freaked out oh, i have got to have a mask. Just remember what happened with toilet paper. Exactly right. And my wife is an er doctor, steve. She had to procure her own mask at the time. Had to go out and find a p100 mask. Like a walking respirator she would come home and face dented already a run on masks even when Public Health officials were saying not to buy them. Whole thing not wanting to cause a panic wasnt because donald trump was trying to down play it because he wanted people to do risky things. It was because of what he was being told by Health Experts at the time. I look at polls out just out this week, steve, from cbs news it. Says that donald trump polls higher, 5 points highner terms of trust for information about the virus. Then the National Media which ranks lower than trump, lower than the cdc, lower than your state governor. So thats all you need to know inin terms of hysterical media. People looking at this objectively and going back and doing their homework, you will see there is not as much to believe here that we would believe from another book antitrump leading up to the election. Because the case is based on deadefamation and the federal government cannot be sued for defamation. Judge, lets talk a little bit about something we have been talking about for it seems like a very long time and we are wondering when its going to finally come to a head or an end. But we have heard, you know, we have kind of gotten that inclination for a while. The closer you get to the election, if there are going to be accusations and charges, the more political it looks so, whats it look like to you . Is it going to come out before the election . Is it going to come out after the election . Are people going to get in big trouble . Jail . Stuff like that . What . So, the department of justice has a rule not to issue an indictment within 60 days of an election if the indictment is of a public official or is likely to affect the outcome of the election. This rule was tossed around quite a bit in. Steve were inside 60 days. Within 60 days. Yes we are inside 60 days. Theoretically if they follow that rule, steve, they wont issue any indictments until after election day. This rule was talked about in 2016 when jim comey inserted himself in the election about Hillary Clinton within 60 days of the election. Now, who are they going to indict . Well, they have a cooperating witness who is the young lawyer who pleaded guilty to altering a document. There is no written plea agreement. But we can assume from his guilty plea that he is their cooperating witness who is giving them, that is he is giving the prosecutors a road map about who was involved in misleading the fisa court in order to torment and surveil the trump campaign. Ainsley do you trust this all things will be above board in this . If the indictments are held until after election day, i do. The u. S. Attorney in connecticut, john durham, has an excellent reputation for intellectual honesty and fidelity to the law. Those of you was in the Legal Community know that and i dont know anybody that disagrees with that. If he holds his fire until after election day. Whatever it is. Whether its no indictments, whether its an indictment of some high profile person in the obama administration, if he holds his fire until after election day, he will have done the country a service by prosecuting the people he thinks he should prosecute in a way that does not effect the outcome of the election. Because prior to that my uncle, once the plane hit the towers my uncle and went down to the World Trade Center site. My uncle is a guy. He played it up to the 20th floor called his wife and left a message for his son dad is okay. I love you and i will be down shortly. Shortly after that the south tower fell and right after that the north tower fell, the one my uncle was in. Ainsley oh my gosh, i think think about what your grandmother must have went through losing one of her children. It did effect you. You were young. You decided to be a Police Officer. Thats right. In this case, the person accused of cheating lost by 30 so it ended up not mattering but you can imagine this multiplied throughout the country on election day and its a real, its a mess because even if people dont cheat, if it leaves the public with the idea that the election is tainted thats very corrupting as well. Steve its one thing, you know, and a lot of people dont understand this , but its one thing if you write to your county board of election supervisors and you say hey, im going to be out of town or for whatever reason because of covid, i would like a mailin ballot. Were just going to mail everybody on our list a ballot and the problem is a lot of people have no idea that that was coming, and then may not have had any interest in filling it out, it winds up right there at the post box, next thing you know, the worry is that there be some shenanigans going on. In 2016, i think it was 10,000 votes in wisconsin and 44,000 in pennsylvania. Thats for president and then you multiply this through all these different races. The margins are so tight so it doesnt take that much cheating to change the outcome, and people are not going to have confidence in it, i think. I go to school, i take messaging of free speech and inclusion and the fact that if were not speaking to one another and having an open exchange of ideas , theres no way to even come together. So to say that i cant listen to you, i cant hear you, you cant be on my campus because i dont agree with what you have to say thats getting a higher education. Well we certainly hope that every country in the region recognizes israel. Thats certainly the ultimate goal. We were very proud just about two weeks ago, i was in the middle east and africa and sudan as you mentioned with secretary pompeo working on the initiatives that the president has set the middle east peace deal and its quite an honor to be at the state department, a part of historic diplomacy of seeing first arab and israeli peace deal in 25 years and we certainly hope theres more to come and i would remind your audience, brian, that we get these historic accomplishments not just because someone has a personality or gives a good speech, but because President Trump and his entire administration has decided to enbold en our allies and friends to empower israel and to not give billions of dollars to our enemies. Steve morgan it is historic what happened and yet, you click around the dial, if people still click around the dial, nobody is talking about it, its no big deal. Well im certainly talking about it as much as i can and because again, its a historic moment. When we were in the middle east, we were on the first flight from israel, the first nonstop flight from israel to sudan and when youre sitting in those moments its almost hard to soak it in to be in the middle of living history, but this is important, because the face of the middle east is changing. You have younger leadership, thats rising up in many areas especially in the gulf nation and these young arabs are looking at the challenge of israel and the Palestinian People from a different lens than people 30 and 40 years ago were looking and were trying to capitalize on that. Steve morgan what im suggesting is this is a big deal , a lot of the other channel s and the other reporters , they dont want to give the president any credit for it. Well, you know, i know we heard all of the news yesterday about the president being nominated for the nobel prize. Im one person that doesnt put too much stock in the accolades and prizes of mankind. Weve had i think four president s that have received the Nobel Peace Prize, and interestingly, fdr didnt get the Nobel Peace Prize and even Winston Churchill got a nobel prize for literature, not the peace prize so while im sure its a massive honor for the president to be nominated i think the real honor is that young children, young israeli children will now grow up in a world theory they can visit each others country and grow up in a world of peace and so for generations, the president has set out a peaceful coexistence between muslims and between jews and christians in the middle east and that is the greatest reward, far more than any prize given by man. Ainsley so morgan yesterday we were reporting that the president is planning to bring troops home. A third, i believe, is what we heard from iraq, and maybe more to come in afghanistan. Whats the latest on that, do you know when this will happen . So general mckenzie and the dod talked about the reduction in forces yesterday. I think its important, ainsley, to put a rock into a larger context. We have been there for 17 years and we now our commanders on the ground have more and more confidence of the ability of the Iraqi Security forces to operate. Remember what this president inherited. We had to defeat the physical caliphate of isis. We had to take baghdadi off of this planet, soulemani, others so the goal after 17 years this is a positive step to be at the place where we can have a true production that our commanders on the ground think is appropriate and thats because we have confidence in the training weve done for 17 years of the Iraqi Security forces remember weve had two strategic dialogues here at the state department with the new leadership in iraq and it was just, you know, seven or eight months ago that i was talking to all of you from the state department because our embassy in iraq had been attacked by malitias funded by the iranian regime. Eight months ago i didnt know that id be in a place where we could talk about the progress and the economic and diplomatic progress that we have made with iraq and just a short amount of time. Brian you got the right prime minister, morgan but the problem is it gives the wrong message to iran and with a few thousand troops leaving, the malitias to be en bold en making things very difficult for an Iraqi Government that wants to work with us but the other major story brian, there is a grave with soulemanis name on it in iran. That sends all the messages we needed to send. Brian the other big story is the department of Homeland Security is denying that adam schiff is grabbing on to, that alleged that the trump adminitration was told to play down russian interference in this election, and not to bring it forward because it aggravates the president. What could you tell us about that . So secretary pompeo was asked about this last night on shannon bream, and hes talked about the amount of focus that this administration has put on russia on the past three years both as his role as director of the cia and of course as secretary of state. We have sanctioned numerous individuals and entities in russia, far more than the last administration has done. We worked on the counterterrorism relationship, and quite frankly, i have been in at least four or five meetings around the world, between secretary pompeo and foreign minister, and ive seen secretary pompeos stare him down and be tough with him and seen him hold no punches so im very very confident in the work of the president and the work of the entire administration, especially my boss mike pompeo. Sergey lavrov knows exactly who mike pompeo is, exactly what were doing at the state department, holding them accountable we have marshall billingsly currently negotiating a new start related to strategic weapons, and these are the type of agreements that you couldnt get unless you have peace through strength which this administration and secretary mike pompeo have displayed. Now they will pipe in, you know, some artificial crowd noise, but theres about four or five stadiums that we know, seattle being one of them and then certainly new orleans and some others, that they wont have the Home Field Advantage that they are accustomed to having. Brian right and of course you have the bucks against the saint s two old quarterbacks are still great quarterbacks how do you explain this . Drew brees and tom brady. Well i think its a few things tom brady and drew brees and so many of these quarterback s even the young quarterbacks come into the league and they started at a very early age of really taking great care of their bodies and the games different, as we know from when i played and so the punishment on a weekly basis isnt quite the same, theyre not getting hit quite the same way and then the fact they are taking such great care of themselves that were going to see a lot more of these quarterbacks play well into their 40s. I know brady has talked about playing a couple of more years, brees physically could whether or not he will or not but this is nfl royalty that were going to get an opportunity to watch on sunday, and im looking forward to it. Brian i still remember the 0 and 26 box that couldnt win a game when they came into the league and now they are the sexiest team in football, they have an outstanding running back. Have you had a chance to see them practice . Ive not watched them practice but theres High Expectations for this football team, as there should be, when you bring the greatest quarterback whose ever played there to tampa and hes able to convince rob gronko wski to come out of retirement this is a franchise like you said that even in recent years hasnt been all that competitive. They havent made it to the post season since 2007 and yet right now, theres an optimism and a lot of people and i wouldnt be surprised, brian, if these two teams, both new orleans and tampa bay are meeting up again in january in the nfc championship game. Brian so interesting well keep this tape so here is whats different, limited or no fans in the stadium, cheerleaders, mascots silent reporters not allowed on the field, officials required to wear masks. What about for the broadcaster . When you put on your headsets are you going to hear that crowd noise that i understand fox is going to give to the viewers at home . We will, yeah, its really out of necessity too because we have to be able to rise to the level of the excitement of whatever takes place in the ballgame, and so thats important but were going through all the safety protocols as well. Its l be a different booth and this is kind of a foreign thing for joe buck and i as well to be able to step in, a lot of people theres quite a support staff thats in that booth with us but a number of the people wont be in the booth. Itll look a lot different. Mike perrera, our rules expert wont be on site with us, so everyone is having to adjust and i think theres an element of the unknown here as we go into week one. Brian i think theres a couple of things that stand out. I think America Needs this game and needs this to stand out. Troy i dont know how you feel. It was just an average division ii sock r player but it was the United Nations i got to meet all different cultures and different people playing sports in the locker room. Is that how you felt, had a chance to meet people from different backgrounds different walks of life, different races, in the locker room . I dont think theres any question, and, you know, throughout my 12year career, i was around a lot of players that we didnt have a lot in common, in terms of how we were raised, and yet, because we had a common goal, we were able to rally together and be brothers, and go out and compete and george some really tremendous relationship, and my best friends in life are those that ive been in the locker rooms with, and so we could all learn, we could all learn a lot. Certainly washington could, from the way teams are able to come together and put aside their differences, and work towards a common goal. Brian what about the country . I understand they are going to have two phrases, end racism and it takes all of us. What do you think the message the nfl hopes to get from this . Well i think they are trying to address racial equality theres no question that Roger Goodell has acknowledged and maybe a few years ago when Colin Kaepernick began this march, that things werent handled at the nfl level the way in hindsight he would have liked and i think theres a real effort right now, not only in football but i think in a lot of ways football is what galvanizes everybody and brings everybody together and im proud of the fact that the nfl is trying to be on the forefront of it and make a difference.
