Is that evidence that theyre trying to flee and if theyre trying to flee, is that evidence that you knew in fact right from wrong at some point. But his refusal to leave the truck for those minutes. Full out from the unrest in ferguson fueling a controversial proposal in arizona that would shield the identity of a Police Officer involved in a shooting for at least 90 days. Should the public know the names of cops involved in a shooting or does that put the police and their families in an unnecessary dangerous situation . Joining us now to debate it phoenix Police Officer joe kerr, an Sandra Kennedy from the naacp believes community deserves to know who is involved in the shooting. Dont you think the public has a right to know, joe . I think the public has a right to know clearly what happened, the whys, the hows. Clearly we have no issue disclosing the Officers Service record. What we are concerned about is what recently happened here in phoenix is where an officer and his family had to abandon their home and essentially go into hiding under threat of physical violence and stress. Right. So whether the officer is 100 innocent, it was selfdefense and well within his rights their identity has been compromised and their family to be in danger by simply doing their job. Sandra, do you understand joes point . I do. I do understand. I have family members who are sworn officers. I have friends who are sworn officers. And i understand how represent reprehensible it would be to have their names disclosed to the public. But the think the 90 days is irrational. You think of the public and what the public would like to see the public wants to be transparent. Theyd like to see transparency. If theres not transparency, then you would think there is a coverup. Thats not what we want. Joe, do you understand when people dont say something, they feel as though somethings being hidden from them because maybe an assumed guilt . Do you understand how the public could jump to that conclusion . I do understand the issue there. Again, what this bill does not do, it does not keep the facts and circumstances surrounding Police Officer shooting from the public. All it simply does is protect the identity of that officer in an effort to protect his family and himself from undue threats and harassment. What this bill does is it allows the community to get the name eventually, but the 90 days was selected because i think it is important looking at what recently happened in ferguson it is important to allow the investigation to play out so that the true facts become a little bit clearer around you also have a little bit of time to allow the emotion because these issues are very, very emotional when they occur to subside almost a 90day coolingout period. Correct. A coolingout period and opportunity to allow the true facts to come out. Because clearly there was tremendous msisinformation put out in the ferguson issue. That really was unfortunate and it caused, frankly, officer wilson gotcha joe. Sandra, other thing is you wonder if cops are not going to do their job go with their own instincts. If you look at this you call it a coolingoff period but it is really going to be a rampingup period where the community is going to come together and theyre going to be kind of forceful in. So there are illegals who are getting drivers licenses and they are getting Social Security numbers as well. You can use one or the other. Next thing you know youre registered to vote someplace which is illegal. Thats correct. Basically the president has exacerbated what was already a problem because once an alien has a Social Security number and or a drivers license, he will be invited to register to vote in most instances at the dmv when he gets that drivers license. Even if he didnt invited at that time in most states he will be a ibl to getable to get on the voter rolls. It is happening all across the country. Now weve got 5 millionplus more illegal aliens who now have access to Social Security numbers and drivers licenses. It is a massive problem thats now getting worse. Unfortunately the obama administration doesnt seem to be concerned about it. The worry for the people watching right now is this if you have people who cannot vote legally but they do vote, there is the possibility there will be some elections that are determined by people who werent supposed to vote. Its already happened. Where . I mentioned one case in North Kansas City just on the missouri side of the river. In 2010 there were approximately 50 somalians who voted. They were organized by an organizer who tried to get them to vote for one candidate and the margin of victory for that candidate was one vote. It was a state ledgegislative seat in 2010. Look, even if it doesnt steal the election, you still have this problem every time an alien votes it effectively disenfranchises a citizen. Even if they dont steal the election, youre stealing my vote. Unfortunately this administration doesnt seem to care. Cant there be some way to crosscheck these people who wind up with drivers licenses and or Social Security numbers with the voter rolls . Yes. And that one thing that some of the secretaries of state have asked for is asked the administration, look be with if youre going to give these illegal aliens quasi amnesty, give us the flames and dates of birth and Social Security numbers so we can make sure they dont get on voter rolls. I think the white house doesnt want the public to know who you many of these aliens might have gotten on the voter rolls because you might have a secretary of state say, look we just took 200 names off. Another thing states can do is what kansas has done. Were 1 of 4 states that requires proof of citizenship when you get on the voter rolls. The problem is the Obama Justice department is fighting us on that and theyre trying to create a loophole so if you use this federal form, you dont have to prove your citizenship. Jr. Well, our special series celebrating black History Month continues this morning and once again i am joined by one of the cohosts of outnumbered, Harris Faulkner here to tell us about a legendary entertainer whose influence is still being felt today. The series is so much fun. We kicked it off last week and now were really into it. I think youre going to love this one. We are talking of course about the one and only sammy davis jr. In his day he performed in places where blacks couldnt even walk through the front door. But it didnt stop him from becoming one of the greatest slow men ever who helped pave the way then for generations of performers even today. Who can take a sunrise reporter what was that feeling that he had that was so different from Everything Else . I think it was a combination of talent, drive and ambition. But it was the time and the environment that he was in that put it all together. Growing up in harlem sammy davis jr. Started performing with his father when he was just 5 years old. How does he balance going to school . Never went. He never went no balance necessary. Im not going. How did they get around the child labor laws . I dont know how they did it but they did come looking for him a few times. And so they just hid him. Just the vision of someone hiding sammy davis jr. Well they billed him as a midget. Theyre like, no kid can do that. Dont you understand . They were like, oh i guess so. And that was it. The most remarkable thing about sammy davis jr. Is that his life parallels the entire history of 20th century american show business. Theres a boat that leads talking about somebody that begins in vaudeville, who winds up in movies, on broadway. He sees everything. Reporter offstage, sammy was the life of a party, generous to a fault. He spent money almost as quickly as he made it. What was he like as a person . He was very, very funny. Really. Very funny. He had this way of making you feel like you were just part of the party. If you were dad, he made you feel better. Tracy davis is sammys only biological daughter. Her mother, swedish actress and model mybrit, was her fathers second wife. The two met on the lot at 20th century fox where it was love at first sight. And my dad was going one way, she was going the other. He turned around and said whos that. They said, oh thats that swedish lady mibrit. He goes, i need to have a party. Shes crazy about him. I mean only my mom could go into a marriage with someone who is black and famous and its the 60s and it is going to be hell and go like we can do this. Reporter but it was a different time back then and many forces were working against them. Every racial insult that you could possibly imagine was hurled at them. Reporter and then they had tracy and somehow it made things worse. And all these photographers are there and you can hear everybody yelling, what color is she . What color is she . Oh my gosh. You know . But that was some of the stuff that they were yelling because it was a curiosity. On stage it was a little easier. People flocked to see sammy perform. But even in vegas, a segregated town where he was a star and paid very well he still came in the back just like every other person of color. Hed come through the back do your thing. Cant talk to the audience. Cant look at them. You have to look above so youre not making any eye contact at all. The embarrassing factor of people clapping for you and wanting to come and see you but we dont really want to sit with you. It was very hard. Did that drive him . I think it did. Today we look at our black stars as the central figures in our popular culture. The hiphop stars the africanamerican actors. Theyre as big as any white star. Were it not for the sammy davis jr. S of the world, that would not exist today. Reporter the thing for any great showman is to lose his voice. So when sammy was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1990 the easy treatment option for some became the most difficult of all. He this said you have a 3 in 10 chance of living if we do radiation but you will get your voice back. Or a 7 in 10 if we operate and you might have to have one of those things that you talk through like that. And my dad said, no. Reporter in her latest book, sammy davis jr. , a personal journey with my father, tracy chronicles those final weeks she spent with her father as he lay dying of cancer. We had the greatest most awful time of my life. But we talked about everything. I was pregnant with my first child and the doctors were like, hes not going to make it. And he puts his hand here, over his trache tube, im not going anywhere until i see my grandson. And he did. Three weeks later he was there for the birth of his first grandson, sam, appropriately named after one of the greatest entertainers of his era. That made my dad so happy. God, if you could have seen his face. He was like thanks for my gift. And you know, from the man who has everything and what you bring to the party, that was that was my moment with my dad. That was my moment. Well sammy davis jr. Is known for he would lighten the moment. Tracy wanted us to do that too. So heres a funny story about her dad. She said after she got married, she walked if and found him watching the movie father of the bride. Very intently. She asked him, dad, what are you doing . He said, im studying. She said, you no he its a movie. Sammy said, i know, but i dont know my lines. I dont know what my role is here. You see, he traveled and performed so much it was a little bit difficult for him to just kind of be the family guy. But in the end sammy and tracy grew quite close as you can see. And he left his mark as a remarkable american. And again, as i saulsalways say, this is our shared history. It was such an intimate look, portrait. She says her dad always made things better. He played the industry better. Imagine just being able to celebrate that today and you have allowed us to do that right now. Thank you for the great work that you do. Incredible. Thank you.
