The president could possibly have some meetings today or phone calls in between his preps for davos. Yesterday before the house and senate voted on a resolutions he had meetings with several senators. Also meeting with senator joe manchin of West Virginia and the first time the new alabama senator, doug jones about all of this. The democratic leadership complaining the president they dont know where the president stands on all of these issues and that he is like negotiating with jello is how Chuck Schumer put it. He keeps shifting his position. Senator tom cotton says that is not true. The president s position has not shifted and hidden. The president s position has been clear all along. With senator schumer and durbin me is they dont like his position. The white house moving ahead on negotiations on daca trying to get a deal within the deadline and progress is being made. The two sides are giving each other a little bit. The democrats are prepared to give the president more money than the pal try 1. 6 billion they offered realizing the president will need to get more money. The white house in turn acknowledging that there are probably more than 690,000 people out there who are eligible for daca. But a lot of people who had not come in from the shadows. Were giving them the runaround so theyre pulling the plug on all communications. At the same time, the chairmen of those committees moving as quickly as possible to release what were told is a blockbuster fourpage memo from devin nunes detailing efforts by the f. B. I. To surveil members of the Trump Campaign and other political organizations. Im told that memo could be released as soon as next week, maybe the week after, sandra. Bill one of the senators in the middle of these bipartisan negotiations that helped end the shutdown is senator mike rounds. To the next task we march. Is 17 days too ambitious, senator . Its a beginning. I think we have to show good faith in our efforts. We have to make some progress. Were doing that now. We started yesterday. We recognize its the connection between daca and Border Security. There might be some other things that we can perhaps discuss as well that might add a few more votes. Our goal is to find a consensus in the senate, the goal would be reasonable to say lets try to shoot for perhaps 70 votes on both sides of the aisle. If were able to do that well move forward. Bill you think you can get 70 votes . 51 republicans and 19 democrats to vote with you. I think were talking closer to 35 and 35. A majority in both. But something that the majority leader could look at and say its reasonable and a good plan. Something the president could look at and say i like what were getting done. My promises are being fulfilled. We are going to permanently be able to discuss an end to the issues surrounding daca because we have a plan in place. This is not going to be easy and totally complete by then but i think we have to make a good faith effort and at the same time allow ourselves by the 8th of february the leadership could look and say i think we have a good basis here to begin our final round of negotiations on. Bill where do you think you are today, senator . I think we know what the issues are and i think we know what the expectations are with regard to daca. We have some understanding about what we want to end up with concerning Border Security but its the details that kind of get in the way. Just as an example, once you Start Talking about allowing a legal status for these daca kids, then you Start Talking about whats the next step . And with citizenship at some point in the future, which a lot of people are talking about. What happens then to as citizens, what about the rest of their families who committed a crime to begin with when they brought them in in the first place . How do we handle that . I think some of those issues are going to have to be discussed and we have to come to a resolution. Same way on Border Security. We can talk about the fact that we know we want a secure border and a system in place. That means not just infrastructure, it also means the support behind it. It means having the manpower to do it. It also means perhaps a discussion about what is inviting these Illegal Immigrants into the United States in the first place . Are there issues within our law that can be modified that perhaps make us a little less inviting to some of those folks who might come here and get a bus ticket and not have to appear again for two years in front of a court . Those are the types of things were talking about. Bill the last two things peel back the curtain as to the challenge ahead. I dont know what holds in 17 days. Last question, however. Did the shutdown bring a sense of clarity to this . Did it get a group to move closer to one another in a bipartisan way . You are talking 35 and 35. That is the biggest bipartisan piece of legislation of the size that you could argue weve seen in 30 years. Maybe. It would also mean the senate is functioning the way it was designed in the first place. Back when they started this it was supposed to be unanimous consent to move forward in the senate. You went from 26, now up to 100 senators it is difficult to come with unanimous consent on anything. It was designed to be a shortcut so you didnt need unanimous consent. Now its a challenge. You need 60 votes to proceed to a particular topic. The budget is the problem here and what caused the issue in the first place. Weve had four continuing resolutions in four months. The reasons for them is because we have for the last 44 years had a broken budget system. We havent done 12 Appropriations Bills and passed them on time except four times in 44 years. The president helped get it through the house of representatives before it got to the senate. He was in constant communication with mcconnell and cornyn about what our communication strategy would be. As you saw throughout the weekend our position was as long as theyre taking americans hostage we wont negotiate on daca until they reopen the government. The president s position prevailed. Let me read it. We can confirm they were u. S. Citizen fatalities and injures east. Our deepest condolences for those killed. This was an attack on the Intercontinental Hotel over the weekend in kabul, afghanistan. 22 people were killed. 14 of those were international. Were foreigners, 150 people rescued including 41 foreigners. But we had no idea that there were any americans involved up to this point. There were germans, greeks, others, taliban claiming responsibility. Intercontinental hotel not usually used by foreigners lately. Fox news was one with many foreign media organizations and others who were staying there for months at a time. It is not a safe place. It is dangerous. It was particularly dangerous over the weekend. The source saying Republican Leaders believe both agencies are not being honest and cooperative in their requests for documents on several investigations. It comes as the d. O. J. David, what are you able to conclude from what were learning now about these 50,000 Text Messages and certainly about what was known in advance about Hillary Clintons exoneration . Well, what we know, sandra, is its only january and we already have the 2018 recipient of the Hillary Clinton destruction of evidence award. This is incredible to learn and it only underscores the level of what democrats in power will do to bend the rules, manipulate the rules, do whatever they have to do to stay in power and ultimately try to destroy their opponents. And for all this talk of how 2018 is going to be a bad election year, you continue developments like this and becomes a much better year for republicans. Independent and less partisan voters dont like how democrats act when theyre in power and they use the rules to their benefit. Sandra one thing to jump to the midterms and the political implications but for now, adrienne, when you look at the fact that the f. B. I. Failed to preserve five months of Text Messages between these two f. B. I. Agents assigned to the mueller probe, now there is this gap, what does this tell you . First of all the f. B. I. Did did say its a technical guest. It only fuels conspiracy theories there was an inside job and bias in the Mueller Investigation into that would essentially detract from the russian investigation. What matters most is that Robert Mueller when he found out about this immediately dismissed these two agents. There have been calls on the right to have an investigation into the special counsel which is frankly a waste of time. Sandra whats the secret society . Trey gowdy is demanding answers when it comes to this secret society that strzok implied of federal agents working to prevent donald trump from becoming president. I want to get you back in here, david. Well, all of this is very shocking in many ways. But on others it goes to what we were just talking about that the democrats in power are willing to use whatever resource they have to try to stop their political opponents. And what you are starting to see now, though, is republicans, President Trump and Congressional Republicans starting to figure out how best to maneuver around this manipulation to get things like tax cuts done, to get the Government Back open, to keep work toward getting our border secure. Thats what folks elected republicans to do and thats what were doing and it is further evidence that its time for this Mueller Investigation to shut down. Theyve had a year. Theyve got nothing. The only thing that has come out of this is that the democrats manipulated the system and had two antitrump people helping to frame the initial months of this investigation, which has been the media narrative that somehow something happened nefarious. The only thing that happened nefarious is the clinton thugs and obama appointees sullied this investigation. Sandra republican congressman John Radcliffe appeared on fox news conceding it is possible the Text Messages that are missing, five months of them, perhaps they really were lost, perhaps it is another strange coincidence. But he said it is harder and harder for us to explain one strange coincidence after another. Look, again, its disappointing that the f. B. I. Somehow lost these Text Messages. They say it was a Technical Glitch that had to do with the samsung phones the two were using. I want to go back to what david just said. Democrats are not in control. Republicans have a unified government in control of the house, senate and white house. Somehow correlate the Mueller Investigation with what is happening in congress and on the tax plan, i dont really understand that. What i find very disappointing is that there are a lot of people out there especially on the far right who dont want to get to the bottom of this investigation. Who dont want to understand how a foreign adversarial government we have an investigation. Last point to underscore what i was just saying. Republicans won in the 2016 election because they promised americans they would cut taxes, they would run the government efficiently and get rid of burdensome regulations so job creation can be done. Thats what they are focused on. The democrats are continuing to focus on an investigation of the president that to date has proven nothing to the allegations they made by these two obama appointees who made it their living these last few months to be a problem to President Trump. The president said the missing texts are one of the biggest stories in a long time. The Justice Department confirming that the two f. B. I. Officials who were having an affair at the time exchanged over 50,000 Text Messages on their f. B. I. Work phones over a twoyear period. The attorney general Jeff Sessions said the Justice Departments internal watchdog the Inspector General is investigating whether the missing records can be recovered and whether their disappearance was deliberate. Number one, we need to know how the worlds premier Law Enforcement Agency Managed to lose five months worth of texts and in the texts we do have theyre discussing how to avoid texts being captured and secured. So whats missing is important. But also what is there is important. It is manifest bias not just against trump, but against his kids, against his business interests. There is a text where they hope the trump hotel fails. That is a level of bias that you rarely see and you never see from Law Enforcement offices. What is also troubling to me is this text that Johnny Radcliffe found last night about this secret society. Now, i have no clue what that means because it was not the phraseology i used. But its the day after the election. Its the same two people that were discussing a little bit later in the text the damage they had done with the clinton investigation and how they could, quote, fix it and make it right. I hesitate in part because my gut concern is there is no big there there. What does that tell you . Tells me two things. Number one actually tells me three things. Kudos to senator johnson for getting this information. Secondarily, it tells me that one of the lead Counter Intelligence agents in the country doesnt think there is anything there there. What disappoints me the most he has no interest in participating in an investigation that might clear donald trump. His only interest is if there is quote something there so he can then fix what he did with the Hillary Clinton email investigation. I dont know a cop i dont know a cop that is not equally interested in clearing the innocent as they are getting the bad guys. So for him to only be interested, if there is quote something there where he can get the president , is stunning for an f. B. I. Agent to admit. Its not good and it is also in that same time period where were missing five months worth of texts. God only knows what else was said. Thats a really important time period. Sessions has recused himself, bob mueller is coming on board. I happen to like him. I respect him. I think he is going to do a good job. But if he is picking guys like peter strzok and lisa page to be on his team and they are only interested in being on the team if they can get the president , they have no interest in clearing him, then he had some hiring failures of epic proportion. Sandra also you have talked about the revelation these Text Messages show that these agents knew Hillary Clinton would be exonerated before that actually happened. You are calling for james comey to come back. You want to ask him questions. I do. We have to talk to him. He is the central figure in the decision number one not to charge secretary clinton. Ive already litigated that issue with him and had three conversations with him about that. But it is really important to understand when that decision was made. He told Johnny Radcliffe they didnt make it until after he emailed Hillary Clinton. And it breaks my heart that were having to have this conversation about two agents that only wanted to get the president , they didnt have any interest in clearing him. You got good lawyers working for the department of justice, everything that is in that memo that i drafted i drafted it for my colleagues. I didnt draft it for the f. B. I. The f. B. I. Can do their own memo. They got more lawyers than we have on the house intel committee. I drafted it for my colleagues so they could see some of the documents and they are all classified which is why i cant release it to the public without a vote. But for the f. B. I. To say we want to see your memo when for months and months they havent let us see lots of stuff we wanted to see, the memo came from what you gave us, f. B. I. There is nothing knew in there other than what you gave us and you showed us. He called it a big win for the gop. Clearly we saw the impact of the continuing resolution and now again going through this next threeweek process. So the president is taking a lead and working with democrats and republicans to push forward on a responsible Immigration Reform deal and so that obviously will include a permanent fix for daca and more importantly what he has talked about ending chain migration, ending the diversity visa lottery system, as well as securing the border. We know these are very popular items. When you are talking about Border Security in particular, a majority of americans, including hispanic americans, believe that we need to secure the border, the southern border. This is a priority. We also realize that meritbased immigration system is critical. It is something vast majority of americans support. So this is something that we know the president is willing to work with democrats and republicans on this issue. Obviously there is a short window. Mcconnell will be voting on this in early february. So the president wants to work aggressively and take a lead on this and bring these senators and house members together. Sandra it will take aggressive action considering february 8th will come around really fast and a lot of people fear well be right back where we started. Is the president is he confident that a deal can be hashed out by then . Some say his relationship with democrats through all this has his own legislative director has insinuated his relationship with democrats has deteriorated. What is his current status . I had a meeting with director pompeo at his request but, you know, the strategy we got clearly the president changed the strategy from his predecessor by putting the military option on the table and going to a maximum pressure on north korea. And by and large that has been working, but whether it is enough remains to be seen. I think what weve got to do now, if director pompeo has more information than anybody in the government. If he is saying this is months away, then im saying we have to be pulling out all the stops now. And not wait for months away. And what am i talking about . Make sure every country that is doing business with north korea knocks it off, just cut it off and if china is not cutting it off we should sanction china. Number two, we have significant cyber offensive capability in this country. Nobody in the world is as good as we are. We should covertly be attacking north koreas information systems, their command and control systems, whatever, finance systems theyve got and all of their offensive cyber capability we should take it down. We should turn them into a paper operation. And the third thing is we better start putting in a naval blockade on north korea and make certain that nobody but nobody is getting in there with any kind of supplies whatsoever. Shut off the back door which we all believe exists in getting fuel into north korea. Make sure that is shut down. The last thing stop sending families into north korea. Military families. How would you describe the situation overall with our military and the need for defense spending and funding . Well, if we dont remove the continuing resolution and then also remove the budget caps, where we are, were funding a military that has five out of 58 brigades ready for combat. 50 of all the airplanes are not flying because they lack the spare parts. Were the smallest military in 75 years. We need to grow it. We havent put one dime into the trump rebuilding of the military policy decision, not a single time has gone into that because the congress hasnt appropriated the monies yet and it has to lift the budget cap to be able to do that. The continuing resolution as the name implies, were continuing to live off the previous budget, which was significantly underfunded and brought us all these problems that we have. Sandra do these shutdowns affect the military and the way it has been described through all this . You heard the president saying democrats are holding our military hostage. Is that the case . Well, in my judgment the military will still protect the American People. All of our operations go forward, all of our active duty people are on active duty. Well continue to function, our ships will continue to sail, planes will continue to fly. All that is going to happen but it is a huge slap in the face for the military because were not going to pay the people that are doing that. Many of our soldiers like a lot of americans do, when i was a youngster in the military i did, we live from paycheck to paycheck. And they deserve to get paid so they can put food on the table and pay the bills and get babies formula and the rest of that that needs to be done. A heck of a thing to do to soldiers defending this country and in harms way to do Something Like that to them. Its outrageous, insulting and we have Law Enforcement officials in the same category.
