They share their side of the story. Good saturday morning to you. Thanks for staying with us. Nice to be be with you. Welcome to americas news headquarters from washington. This programming note. Neil cavuto and the cost of freedom will air at a special time today beginning at 1 00 p. M. Eastern. Meanwhile, a somber day in delaware and across the nation as the funeral of beau biden is set to begin in delaware. The 46yearold son of the Vice President died one week ago after a twoyear battle with brain cancer. Doug mckelway is standing by in the familys hometown of wilmington where people are beginning to arrive for services. Doug . Reporter hi, elizabeth. Weve just gotten word that the president and first family have arrived at the Delaware Air National guard air base here outside of wilmington and should be arriving at the church momentarily where people are already being seated in the pews inside the church. It is difficult to imagine the totality of the grief that the biden family must be dealing with. A family that has known such tremendous pain. But the state of delaware, as the wilmington news journal reported this morning, is dog its best to lift them up. This is a state and a community which has quite literally watch beau biden grow up. After the car crash that killed his mother and youngest sister which injured him badly and his younger brother hunter very badly all at time when his father had been elected to the senate. There was obviously a tremendous interest in watching this young boy grow up and he did not disappoint in adult life. He had the same retail political skills his father had, but it was not just a politicking, it was a heartfelt love of the common man. On that note, we should mention that joe and jill biden yesterday during a public viewing inside this church stayed here from 1 00 in the afternoon until 11 00 at night greeting each and every mourner in person that arrived in the church. Beau biden, as u. S. Attorney in life and later as the attorney general of the state of delaware, did so much for this state. He also served in the Delaware Air National guard under the tut tutelage of ray odierno. Hell be delivering one of the eulogies today will along with the president. Hell also be awarding the legion of merit to biden posthumously. It was as a family man that beau biden most distinguished himself. His father the Vice President wrote earlier this week quote, more than his professional accomplishments beau measured himself as a husband father son and brother. His absolute honor made him a role model of our father. He embodied the saying that a parent knows success when his child turns out better than he did. In the words of the biden family, beau biden was quite simply the finest man any of us have ever known, end quote. Eulogies will be delivered today by chief of staff of the army ray odierno. Following that the president of the United States and following that by his half sister ashley and then younger brother hunter. The recessional hymn today the battle hymn of the republic. The ceremony gets under way at about 10 30, half hour from now. Back to you. Doug thank you. Of course well be covering those eulogies live. But if you want to watch the entire funeral procession it is streaming and will be streaming at fox news. Com. Beau bidens widow haley has asked that those wishing to make contributions in memory of beau biden do so at the Beau Biden Foundation for the protection of children at Beau Biden Foundation. Org. The charity was set up this week to honor bidens life. What a life it was cut way too short. I know. Weve heard from so many folks obviously the president , the Vice President , so many folks at home. Send us your condolence messages to the biden family. Send them via twitter. Obviously we will read some of your thoughts later on in the show as our coverage of the life and now funeral of beau biden continues. Moving overseas saudi arabia says its air defenses ininterseptded a miss will launched by rebels in yemen. They launched a scud miss elle toward the kingdoms largest air base in the southwest part of saudi arabia that borders yemen. The saudis fired two patriot missiles shooting down the scud. The saudis refaltaliated by attacking and damaging the rebels missile launcher. This gun sight video was just released. For months a Saudi Led Coalition has bombed rebel positions trying to problem up forces royal to the ousted president. Those attacks are have proven less than successful at least in meeting their end goals. The Houthi Rebels iranian backed have agreed to peace talks in geneva to end this civil war in yemen. The peace talks are set for june 14th. Here for some analysis former pentagon spokesperson and retired Navy Commander j. D. Gordon. We just heard the most recent escalation in yemen. What do you make of it . Elizabeth thanks for having me on the show. I think its another escalation in this proxy war between iran and saudi arabia. Clearly the Houthi Rebels started with a local issue but taking it to the next level by firing a scud missile. I think we have to keep an eye on it and the u. S. Has to do a better job of keeping an eye on these crises before they spin out of control. What do you suggest the u. S. Does right now . I think we ought to be helping the saudis more than we are and we ought to realize theres a proxy war going on between the shia extremists in iran and theyre helping the Houthi Rebels in yemen and also the sunni extremists fu will, these terror groups ute of places like saudi arabia. Both of those groups want to control the middle east want to control the borld. Weve got to realize that radical islams ideology is at the core of it also explaining the reason why were having problems in iraq right now. Theres a big proxy war, who is going to control the middle east, the world. Both of them see the usz and israel as mortal enemies. Thet want to wipe one of those groups out and wipe us out next. We have to keep our eye on the ball. You brought up iraq and also wanting the u. S. To do more. I want to play a sound bite as we switch gears over to the fight against isis. Weve been hearing from the administration, but i want to bring up a sound bite that the president said in september of 2014 and get your reaction. Listen here. We will degrade and ultimately destroy isil through a comprehensive and sustained counterterrorism strategy. We will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country wherever they are. That means i will not hesitate to take action against isil in syria as well as iraq. Well we heard the president say he wont hesitate. We heard the words degrade. Are we seeing that . I wouldnt say so. I think the president thinks we can just chip away at the Islamic State and eventually theyll fall. What the president is not tell telling us is for every day that isis exists were at great risk because theyre recruiting people encouraging lone wolf attacks. We could possibly face more 9 11 type attacks. The president is not acting with a sense of urgency. Weve only had 3,800 air strikes in ten months. At that rate, wed still be fighting world war we have the administration this week saying that 10,000 isis fighters have been wiped out but then we also heard from general petraeus who said if were not winning then were losing. So what are the American People supposed to think . I think they have to have a new leadership in the white house because even though theyve killed 10,000 isis fighters, isis has replaced them. Even though weve had some success in targeting their financing from these Oil Facilities and weve had some success in driving isis from some parts of central and Northern Iraq isis just took ramadi, the capital of al Anbar Province and took palmyra in syria. Theres not the sustained effort you see. One thing a lot of people dont understand is the nature of civilian casualties in a battle of ideas. If you have loot of civilian casualties like hamas shows in gaza, you lose the battle of ideas. Islamic state, ironic willally, the more were worried about civilian casualties in iraq and syria, the more likely well have them here because we cant prevent the Islamic State from killing us here. Talk about prevention. Their social Media Campaign is also not slowing down. Weve got to do a better job of targeting their social Media Campaign. Right now some of them are even using encrypted means to communicate and even via things like twitterer facebook these guys are radicalizing losers. Are we reading those encrypted messages. Were reading some of them to the extent we need to read them more. But certainly were keeping more attention to twitter facebook. But weve got to do a better job of disrupting their encrypted communications. Theyre recruiting losers and psychopaths from 90 countries. Thousands of westerners have gone over there, throughing 180 from the United States. Weve got to do a better job at disrupting thifrg communications blocking their social media and twitter facebook. Those things can help us. J. D. Gordon, thank you so much. Scary. Thank you. The chinese wont confirm, but they wont deny their hackers broke into u. S. Government computers and stole millions of personnel records. Many of these records include security clearance information and background checks dating back to 1985. Mike baker is a former cia covert Operations Officer and president of Global Intelligence firm called diligence. Mike, appreciate you being here. You think the chinese now have all of your information . Well, lets put it this way. The chinese, despite their protestations, are and have been for some time the largest state sponsor of Cyber Attacks and economic espionage. So thats not a surprise shouldnt be a surprise to anyone. What is i think a continuing surprise is the slowness with which were getting into the game. By that i mean the efforts to fully protect, if possible the information that theyre going after within both the public and private sectors. Whats the goal of the chinese here . I mean it doesnt seem like they probably want to open up credit cards in the name of a bunch of u. S. Government employees and go on a shopping spree here. Is this a sanctions state effort in some way to gain an upper hand in terms of intelligence gathering . Whats the goal of the chinese here . Everyone here in the u. S. Weve become accustomed to the idea of identity theft, right . And from cyber tacks that take an individuals name and Social Security number. That is it not what this latest massive attack against the federal government databases is all about. Its sucking up information from all of those people millions possibly 3 million, possibly more. I think we havent actually heard how bad this is yet of individuals who have either applied for currently have or have had security clearances. Now the background packages involved in that the security clearance packages contain a great deal of information about each individual. So if you think about it as an Operations Officer as an Intelligence Officer whether youre with the u. S. Or china or russia or anywhere else thats a targeting dream, to gather up information on millions of individuals with security clearances with access to information that you want to gather. Thats basically putting it in simplistic terms of purpose of this particular attack. When you think about what the chinese have been doing over the past couple of years, it does seem to be sort of a systemic approach, not only on the intelligence side but the military side. Last week we talked about this which is the issue of the islands in the South China Sea that china has now built, these are surveillance pictures were showing from u. S. Military aircraft, innow starting to lay claim to them. Is the United States taking an aggressive enough approach towards the chinese . We have them building islands, now hacking in to your point getting the gold mine of Intelligence Data in terms of who all of our folks are that have security clearances. What can be done . Well, you know in pragmatic terms, you know you can only go so far in terms of taking an aggressive stance against a country and a powerhouse like china. So we have to be realistic. But at the same time there are certain things we can do. Looshgs look, think after world war ii japan made a decision, they were going to rise from the ashes by being a manufacturing powerhouse. China decided, were getting into the 21st century by jump starting our research and development, our industry by essentially bypassing that r d process and sucking up all the information we can from everybody else. Thats what theyve been doing. Look, they have over two dozen Information Warfare units run by the Peoples Liberation army by the Third Department and others, designed to do nothing but gather up economic intelligence and insulation whats the end game . Does the United States participate in this kind of stuff, in this dark art . Do we have our own hacking units that are now launching a counter attack and the chinese just dont talk about it . Are are we completely flatfooted here . No we are not flatfooted. Within the intel community, military and elsewhere, we have some of the best resources and personnel and capabilities out there. Yes it would be naive, coy, stupid of me to sit here and say, well we dont do this either. Of course. Every nation should act according to its best interests. Now, the difference being that in china and russia and to be fair a lot of our allies, france and wrefr else their best interest is to support their state, by gathering up this intelligence from the private sector. What we need to do is we need to have here in the United States better cooperation between the private and public sectors and were slowly, slowly getting there. But part of the problem is for years now and this is not something that just happened over the past five or six years they always say the chinese are playing the thousandyear war. Its been going on for a long time. Mike baker, we appreciate your time and insight. Thank you, sir. Thank you. Talk soon. Turning now to the scandal that has rocked the family at the center of the popular cable reality tv series 19 kids and counting. The sisters of josh duggar are coming to his defense after reports surfaced that the eldest son of michelle and Jim Bob Duggar had abused them and other young girls when he was a teenager. Last night in part two of megyn kellys exclusive interview, sisters jessa and jill say they are Still Standing by him. Oh, my grngsoodness, most of the stuff out there is lies not true. For truths sake we want to come out and set the record straight. Well, i think in the case of what josh did, it was very wrong. Im not going to justify anything that he did or say it was okay. Not permissible. But i do want to speak up in his defense against people who are calling him a child molester or a pedophile or a rapist some people are saying. That is so overboard and a lie. In joshs case he was a boy, young boy, in puberty, and a little too curious about girls. That got him into some trouble, and he made some bad choices. But really the extent of it was mild inappropriate touching on fully clothed victims. Most of it while girls were sleeping. We didnt even know about it until he went and confessed it to my parents. The sisters say the family has not only dealt with the issue but resolved it. They say having the media rehash the incidents has been very difficult. If you missed any of megyn kellys exclusive interview with the duggar family you can watch part one tonight at 9 00 p. M. Eastern and part two will air tomorrow night at 9 00 p. M. Eastern. Incredible reporting by megyn. Much more ahead, she remains the overwhelming favorite for the democratic nomination but Hillary Clintons campaign appears to have hit a speed bump. Com more than a month since her video announcement, democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton still hasnt given a Major Campaign speech. That changes a week from today in new york city. The speech comes as there are growing questions about the clintons finances and alleged ethical transgressions. The latest fox news poll shows 61 of registered voters believe the clintons used their foundation to sell influence. But when it comes to democratic primary voters, only 10 are very concerned about allegations of Hillary Clintons dishonest, 42 dont care at all. For a fair and balanced debate democratic strategist and former Deputy National finance director for the Dnc David Mercer and Brad Blakeman former Senior Adviser to president george w. Bush. Gentlemen, appreciate you guys being here. First to you, david. It may not be that the democratic primary voters care about the allegations of alleged ethical transgressions how do you overcome that if she make its to the general . I think that we just as you point out, theyre allegations. Its speculation. And we will get the find truth and information and facts out so that she will confirm, as she has said before that theres nothing to the allegations an all the other speculations republicans have made in the past. So i think really what people are looking for and the reason why you see a disinterest in the numbers on the poll is that people want to hear solutions to problems and challenges theyre facing, not speculation or allegations. Does that work brad . No. Its a failed strategy. The fact of the matter is theyre trying to correspond anate her as a selection. You have to be selected by the party before elected by the people. David and the democrats feel they have no problem in the selection process. Their problem am come in the election process, when the American People start evaluating her not relying on her base but the independents and others they need to win. Well you know you talk about the selection or coronation process. We have an interesting poll thats come up, brad this is something youve talked about a lot fox news poll race for the democratic nomination is it over yet . 69 69 of mompreneurs say its not over yet, 28 say clinton will win. With the way everyone is talking about it in the media, youd expect those numbers to be reversed. If i may add in on that neither does secretary clinton believe that its over yet, and thats what counts. And secondly, thats why you see her out in the early states connecting with the American People from those states to hear what their concerns are. Shes not running the kind of campaign though that even the top gop guys are. Shes not giving major speeches. I would totally agree. Thats a distinction she is glad to have you remark on and others to observe because she wants to connect with the American People. How is she going to connect with the American People . Look, lets p put this in historical people. She connected with 18 Million People in 2008 getting 18 million votes. I dont think that theres a republican in the field, even if you tally up all of the their votes in their runs for president comes to 18 million. Shes got a track record. Heres the problem. Hillary clinton wants to do it her way, and its her way or the highway. Shes done it as secretary of state with her emails and private servers. Were now seeing it as you pointed out leland in not giving speeches and not taking the press on. Its a failed eded strategy. This is something that is so not typical of a candidate. They seek the press. They want to make speeches. They want to touch people. And i think hillarys strategy is she will do as little as possible to get as much as possible. It doesnt work. You have to connect with people in not only yourere going to move on from the democratics to the republicans. Speaking of the republicans heres where it stands now, latest fox news poll on the horse race. Look at how close everyone is and also to your guys point how many there are, bush 12 , walker 11 carson 11 , this is a National Poll paul 9 cruz at 8 . This early in is it a good thing to have so many guys who really have to fight tooth and nail for every last point . Or would it be better for the republicans to have a clear frontrunner . No. As a party were going to let the party decide who theyre going to select. And when you have a process of primaries, the cream rises to the top. They have to fight for every vote, being in the battleground states. Dont forget, the people who are going to select you have to go back to in the primary states to get elected. David will know this election will probably come down to eight states out of 50. Our republicans are at a deficit both in Electoral College needed votes and also in registration. So weve got double duty. Weve got to convince independents and women and minorities to come our way. So you know new york is never going to go republican california will never go republican. So already theyre at a great advantage. This is great for republicans. Well i would say that if its good for republicans, is it bad for democrats . Well leave that to the republicans because were focused on democrats and as brad had mentioned with regard to going after every vote you cant take for granted any vote. That is what Hillary Clinton is doing now. Whether bernie sand erdz isers is in the race or Martin Omalley every candidate should go about it that way. The problem with the republican field is that there is no mark of distinction from one candidate to another. Thats because theres no leadership among the candidates. And its almost like taking a test where you hope if you dont know the answer you can just select all of the above. And right now everybody is slektding all. Above. And theres a lot of distinctions. Brad, nice to see you. David, thank you very much. Heartbreak tomorrow Chris Wallace welcomes 1 of those gop president ial contenders to fox news sunday. Former senator Rick Santorum will talk about why he threw his hat into the 2016 race. Fox news sunday check your local listings for times. And put on your derby hats and hold your press. Preakness and Kentucky Derby winner american pharaoh is trying to make history as horses and jock kiz prep for the big race at Belmont Stakes today. Speaking of stakes theyve never been higher. It would be the first time in more than 35 years that a horse could win the triple crown. 90,000 fans are expected ate belmont park where our Rick Leventhal is standing by. Rick . Reporter good morning, elizabeth elizabeth. Just under 8 1 2 hours until post time. The 147th running of the Belmont Stakes, when eight 3yearolds will line up for a shot at history. Only one of them has a chance at the triple crown. American pharaoh will be the third horse in the last four years to try and win the triple crown the 14th since 1978. Of course none of the others were able to do it. The question is can american pharaoh win this elusive title . He certainly looked good in practice yesterday according to his trainer and his owners who say he is strong hes healthy despite running four races in the last eight weeks. He ran well. He was floating over the track. Heres more from the owner. He is a special horse. But to win the triple crown, tests sa task ha has not been done in 37 years and only 11 have done it in the history of the sport. I want it for the horse because that will define greatness. And i know hes a very good horse, but once he do that, then he goes in completely the front level. Reporter meanwhile, officials are hoping to avoid the nightmare of last year when it took people up to three hours or more to leave belmont park because of massive delays at the belmont train station. They have made 5 million worth of improvements to that train station adding platforms and staircases, longer tracks extra trains. They hope to limit that travel time to a couple of hours. We also have unprecedented security at the track this year. 500 officers on duty along with nypd, state and local police. All under the direction of the former head of the new york office of the fbi george sven azell los. Heres what he told me yesterday. I want people to come here and have the best day of their life. I want them to see history. I want them to have a good time not worry about anything dont worry about security. Dont worry about somebody wrecking your good experience. This is about coming here and having a good time and enjoying their time at the racetrack. Reporter extremely long odds or short odds on american pharaoh. Put the fish in the cooler welcome back to the special edition of americas news headquarters. This programming note cavuto on business will now air at 1 30 p. M. Eastern right here on fox news. And were looking live at st. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic church where we know the first family just arrived along with friends and other Family Gathering to honor the life of beau biden. President obama and beaus siblings hunter and ashley biden will deliver eulogies. He we will bring those to you live. If youre interested in watching the entire funeral procession you can do it at fox news. Com. Again, when the eulogies begin, well bring them to you live. In the meantime, nicole interviewed the former attorney general. Shes now a reporter for the Hechinger Report and joins us live from outside the church. Nicole, thank you for joining us. We appreciate it. Very somber day in delaware and across the nation. Reporter thank you for having me. I want to ask you a little bit about your interaction with beau and his family when you covered education news in delaware. Reporter yes. One of attorney general bidens priorities was protecting vulnerable people, including children. One of his key initiatives was to help schools prevent bullying of children. So i interviewed him for a few stories about that. Now, one of the last times that you actually met with him was at the church ironically where you are today, and were looking ging ging at it behind you. You had a personal story you wanted to share. Tell me about it. Reporter yes. This was in august 2013 and i was here as a reporter to cover a local priest had died and unexpectedly attorney general biden and Vice President joe biden showed up to pay respects to the priest. They were offered to go right in the front door but they both insisted on waiting in line behind everyone else and they did that. After the service ended, they came out together and spent a lot of time with people. That was you in that photograph that we just saw. I want you to tell me a little bit about covering him as a person. It sounded like he was very accessible and very pleasant. Reporter he was. He was very approachable. He was not a showy person but just people called him beau. They called him by his first name, and he seemed to want them to do that. He was a very personable man. Very personable very accessible. And it seemed like that wasnt just him in the local community. It was really across the entire state of delaware. Am i right . Reporter thats right. Theres a saying in delaware its not a state its a community. This place is a lot like a small town. I know something about small towns having grown up in rural appalachia, and the people here know each other. They really genuinely care about each other. And whatever their personal beliefs or differences might be theyre kind to each other, you know . And we know his some of his Health Issues especially years ago were fairly public. But did the public know especially recently, just how ill he was . Reporter you know, its hard to say. I think delawareans had a sense that he wasnt okay and i think people were protective of him. He clearly decided, his choice was to be private, and i think everyone was just sort of hoping and praying for the best. I want to interrupt you just very briefly. We can see the hearst is arriving. What youre looking at now is actually the site where anyone who attends the funeral arrives. And we can see not only the folks inside but the procession getting under way. Nichol, if you dont mind i want you to tell me a little bit more about beau bidens legacy. You talked about him being accessible, him reaching out to the community. Tell me, what did he accomplish over his tenure . Reporter he passed legislation that increased protections for bullied children. He was also very active in fighting for the rights of people who lost their homes during the mortgage crisis. He was known there was a very sad case here where a doctor had abused a number of children. His office prosecuted that case. There was a theme that emerged from the things that he did, and that was he seems to very much care about protecting vulnerable people. For those of us who are just joining the program, nicholedobo is joining us and were seeing the hearst arriving being carried into the church. Nichole, i want you to give us a sense, we can feel how somber it is of what youre feeling right now. Youre right outside the church. Tell us a little bit about today. Reporter you know when i got here i was reflecting on the last time i spoke to beau which was outside this church and his father was hugging and kissing people that came up to him. And beau kind of hung back just a little. At one point he walked over to his dad with just some ordinary person i didnt know who it was and said hey dad, i want to introduce you to someone. It really was a reminder of nichole, if you dont mind, were going to take a moment of silence as the casket is brought out and brought into the church. Lets just take a moment now. We are gathered by gods spirit to celebrate the brief life of beau biden. Given him by the god of all life. With the promise that in jesus christ he is baptized into the body of christ and is for us promised to eternity. Thank you all for coming for the biden family and indeed for the american nation. Oh god almighty father our faith professes that your son died and rose again, mercifully grant that through this mystery your surntervant beau who has fallen asleep in christ may rejoice to rise again through him. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit. One god, forever and ever. Amen. A reading. The virtuen man though he died before his time will find rest. Length of days is not what makes age honorable. Understanding, is this mans gray hairs. Untarnished life. He has sought to please god so god has loved him. As he was living among sinners, he has been taken out. He has been carried off so that evil may not warp his understanding or trenchry seduce his soul. The whirl wind corrupts the simple heart. A reading from the second letter of st. Paul to the corinthians. Brothers and sisters, we know that if our earthly dwelling a tent should be destroyed, we have a building from god. A with dwelling not made with hands. Eternal in heaven. We are always courageous although we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. Yet we are courageous. The word of the lord. Thanks be to god. Hal lulieuia the lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy gospel according to john. Now, when jesus came to bethany, he found that lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Bethany was near jerusalem about two miles off. And many of the jews had come to martha and mary to console them concerning their brother. When martha heard that jesus was coming she went and met him, while mary sat in the house. Martha said to jesus, lord if you had been here my brother would not have died. And even now i know that whatever you ask from god, god will give you. Jesus said to her, your brother will rise again. Martha said to him, i know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said to her, i am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me though the person die, yet shall the person live. And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this she said to him. Yes, lord i believe that you are the christ the son of god, who is coming into the world. The gospel of the lord. Glory to you, oh, lord. Hallie dearest natalie and hunter joe and jill hunter and Kathleen Ashley and howard your eminence cardinal your excellency bishop and your eminence reverend right. Reverend beman, reverend jones. President obama, general odenaro. The many dignitaries that are here dear friends all. The reaction has been universal. Whether you were a friend of beau bidens or knew him only from the press, how sad, how very very sad. Its heartbreaking. When i heard the news i wept. This great, young man, this splendid son, this devoted deeply loving husband and father. As true a brother as anyone could ever have this fearlessly patriotic public servant, gone. Gone. Gone. It was, is like the night of good friday. The one we hoped in counted on thought our future has been taken from us. How do you say good bye to the finest man any of us have ever known . First i think we face the loss. The fact that we have lost the handsome winning humble presence of an incomparable gift. The richness of that gift is the measure of our grief. The nobler a man is the more he is praised and even revered. But the truly noble man, the righteous man of the book of wisdom knows the one to be praised and indeed worshipped is not himself, but his creator, the ground and goal of his life. For all his sense of responsibility and commitment he knows that he did not invent himself, but was given life. And a world to fulfill it in. By a loving lord. Only at the end of that life can he or his lord or indeed any of us make a full accounting of its achievement. Whether young or old that are dying, it is only then that we can say the life we have been given, and of all those we have love within the gift take it now, lord it was your gift. All my family and friends and Public Service were your gift as well. Take them now. Take them now. And fold them in your mercy, lead us home. You alone know fully the grace that accompanied your gift. As surely as beau biden knelt at night to pray with his wife and children whether in these words or some like them he knew the words of jesus on the cross. Father into thy hands i commit my spirit. Words that are offered to of us to share on the good fridays of our lives. Whether in prolonged suffering like beaus or in the gradual diminishments of age our mortal lives are gifts that must pass through the darkness of death if they are to know the splendor of eternity. In this sense, death is not extinguishing the light as the great indian poet wrote, it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come. Or in the words of paul we hope that even if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from god, a house not made with hands. Beaus life of giving to his fellow citizens and above all to his family was dazzling. As a young lawyer working for the Justice Department in philadelphia and also in war torn kosovo as a member of the Delaware Army National Guard and a major in the judge advocate general corp. As attorney general of delaware or going for a run for the United States senate because he felt his duty to continue his mission to protect children from abuse. The watch words were honor. Courage, integrity. My own favorite picture shows him standing near his father on a base in baghdad on july 4th, 2009, midway through his deployment in iraq. The two men known for the warmth of their smiles are close to grim. A sense of danger and possibly worse hangs over the crew cut son in fatigues looking into the eyes of the earnest father. There is no limit to what the protection of life may entail. Nor was there for jesus. If all of life is ultimately gift how was he the gift that would redeem and fulfill the gift of our creation . How did god give us this son to reveal gods vision of the world and lead the world to god . I would prefer not to say that god gave us the son to die for us. What father could possibly envisage that . Rather god gave us the son, god only word in your flesh to live with and for us. God gave us jesus to preach the kingdom among us. A reign of reciprocity, forgiveness, healing and fulfillment. If that mission led to violence rejection by authorities, civil and religious, though they threatened so be it. Jesus would not turn back. He remained true to his word n very deepest sense, even to the cross. Which made it possible for god 1 and forever to reveal the power of his forgiving love over even the cruellest death. Death is so often cruel. We feel that today moving from good friday into holy saturday when all is silence, feelings are muted, grief and mourning overtake everything. Beau is gone. But from our immediate vision only. For we live now not only after good friday and through holy saturday but in easter. And here is beaus great and final gift to us. Promising, as he most assuredly was, his death calls us to hear again the promise, the promise, that the gift of life entails. It is the promise first given to the jewish people that their god would never fail them but would be faithful to them forever. It is the promise spoken by jesus to martha of bethany after the death of her brother, lazarus. I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me though the person dies yet shall the person live. And jesus christ writes st. Paul it is always yes. For all the promises of god find their yes in him. That is why we utter the amen through him to the glory of god. In a few moments in our eucharistic prayer we will recall this mystery of our redemption. The fulfillment of the promise that attended creation from its beginning, and courses through it still in the holy spirit. And for us in a special way, it becomes the promise of union with beau and the communion of saints. Now and one day forever. We pray to be united now and one day forever with a remarkable man for whom belief was not simply a view of life but engaged love. Not really confession but commitment. Not only a generous life but a search for the justice that makes friendship possible. For many of its saints the Catholic Church celebrates their feast on the day of the saints death. The day of final union with god. Through christ and in the holy spirit. I have little doubt that in this sense, may 30th, 2015 is a feast day for everyone here. We may be weeping and may weep more but thanks to beau this is also a time of almost unlimited grace. I pray for all of us that the gift and promise of his life may deepen our love and faith and hope in god, and in one another in god. Pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god, the almighty father. May the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for our good and the good of all his holy church. As we humbly present to you this sacrificial offerings, oh, lord. With the salvation of your servant, beau we beseech your mercy that he who did not doubt your son to be a loving savior may find in him a merciful judge, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen. The lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the lord. Let us give thanks to the lord. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks. Lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord. In him, the hope of blessed resurrection as dawned that those saddened by the certainty of dying might be consoled by the promise of immortality to come. Indeed for your faithful lord life has changed. Not ended. When this earthly dwelling turns to dust an eternal dwelling is may ready in heaven. With angels and thrones and dominions and all the hosts we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim. You are indeed holy oh, lord. And all you have created rightly gives you praise. But through your son, our Lord Jesus Christ may the power and working of the holy spirit. You gave life to all things and made them holy. And you never cease to gather a people to yourself. So that from the rising of the sun through its setting. A pure sacrifice may be offered in your name. Therefore, oh, lord we humbly implore you, by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration. So that they may become the body and blood of your son, our Lord Jesus Christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries. For on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you, and eat of it. For this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and giving you thanks he said the blessing. And gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant. Which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of our faith. Therefore, oh, lord as we celebrate the memorial of his saving passion, his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven as we look forward to his Second Coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look we pray upon the oblation of your church. Recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself. Grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son may be filled with his holy spirit and become one body one spirit in christ. May he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect. Especially with the most Blessed Virgin Mary mother of god with your blessed apostles and martyrs and with anthony and all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for our daily help. May this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray oh, lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your Pilgrim Church on earth. With your servant francis our pope francis our bishop the order of bishops, all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own. Remember your servant, beau whom you have called from this world to yourself. Grant that he who is united with your son to a death like his, may also be one with him in his resurrection. When from the earth he will raise up the flesh in the flesh those who have died and transform our lowly body after the pattern of his own glorious body. To our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you in their passing from this life. Give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory, when you will wipe away every tear from our eyes for seeing your our god as we are. We shall be like you for all the ages and praise you without end, through christ our lord. For whom you besocietytow on the world all that is good. Through him and with him and in him. Oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit. All glory and honor is yours forever and ever. Amen let us pray now as the lord himself taught us. Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us oh, lord we pray from every eveil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior, jesus christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Lord jesus christ you said to your apostles peace i leave you, my peace i give you. Look not on our sins but on the faith of your church. Graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the lord be always with you. And with your spirit. Let us share with within another a sign of the lords peace. Lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace this is the lamb of god. Who takes away the sin of the world. We are blessed to be called to his table. Our communion there will be stationed at the front of the church in the middle and in the back. If you wish to receive communion, please come forward through the center aisle, and return to your seats by the side aisles. If you do not wish to receive communion but would like to receive a blessing which we greatly encourage, please come forward with your hands folded on your chest to receive the blessing. Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me i once was lost but now im found was blind but now i see was grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relieve how precious did that grace appear the hour i first believed through many dangers, toils and snares i have already come its grace thats taught my heart to fear and grace will lead me home Amazing Grace how sweet the sound you are watching the communion at st. Anthony church in wilmington delaware the Funeral Service for beau biden, the son of the Vice President , in attendance. We have seen the president , president and mrs. Clinton, the Vice President and his family are there. Well stay with the picture as we watch the 1,000 mourners there at the church take communion. We want to bring in the president ial historian to get a little bit of perspective and insight on this. I was so struck watching the casket come in. And you watched beau bidens son, hunter standing there watching his fathers casket. He brought in. You couldnt help but have your mind go to a similar picture you saw with jfk junior in 1963 with his father the president of the United States at the time. There are so many comparisons. Thats the last time that either a president or Vice President had to bury a child was jfk while in office. While in office. Thats true. Ronald and nancy reagan had to bury Maureen Reagan in 2001. Its very interesting. She was quite a lady. I talked to president reagan after he lost her. He reiterated the famous quote a parent shouldnt live long enough to bury their own child. Maureen reagan helped raise 60 million for alzheimers disease not knowing that her father would die of alzheimers. You mentioned the kennedys all of us think of the kennedys as we watch the scenes today. The last child of a president to die while a president was in office was in 1963 august 9th when Patrick Kennedy two days old, died. And Jackie Kennedy told one of her best friends, this was the most painful experience of my life. I will never forget this. And a pain that the Vice President knows all too well. He lost his wife and his young daughter in a car crash that injured beau and his younger brother. And to think to have to have been at the bedside of your child for so long and now all of a sudden to have been at his bedside again, this time he fought a losing battle against cancer. You watch joe biden, the Vice President there, you cant imagine the grief, really. I dont think any of us can unless weve experienced it. We were talking these pictures together. You talked about how the obvious painful loss of a child. Can change the course of your life. I mean and not just for joe, obviously, for the children and his wife. But how it could impact the future of his career. Thats true. I should add that three months after the kennedy child was lost her husband was assassinated in dallas. So it was not the end of tragedy for that family and pain. But thats true. For Calvin Coolidge Calvin Coolidge jr. Was a son of the president who died in the 20th century. And he played tennis on the white house tennis courts. The whole nation loved this young man. But he didnt wear socks and he had tennis shoes and he developed a blister and developed blood poisoning. Suddenly the whole nation learned about it and it was too late. The whole nation was watching this young man, the last few days of his life as he died. And a few months later when what is today we call the White House Press corp asked Calvin Coolidge are you going to run for office. He sent back a hand written note i do not choose to run. He was out. He told friends the loss of his son took all the joy out of Public Service. Lincoln lost eddie, when he lost his son, he told his law partner, i cant go home. I see mary i think of eddie, every room i think of him. Im going to run for office. He lost himself, ironically in public life. And theres a speech that lincoln gave where he says if the good folk of illinois decide not to reelect me. I have experienced pain much worse. He was referring to eddie. Did joe biden originally said he was not going to go to the u. S. Senate after the car crash that took his wife and his daughter. And he was sworn into the senate after a lot of i guess you could say lobbying by his dear friends, at beau bidens bedside is where he was sworn in. I want to bring in our reporter outside of the church. Doug im not sure how much of this youre able to see, but as you were there and you saw the mourners come in, give us a sense of the collective grief that was there. You know its hard to say. Exactly because were kept 100 yards away from the actual entrance to the church. I would say, however, that im going to do this unexpectedly because you came to me unexpectedly. If i can ask our cameraman just to pan off to get a shot of some of the crowds these are people residents of this community. This is the Little Italy Community in wilmington delaware. Its a working Class Community of row houses. And as you look at the people here the one thought that comes to my mind is these are biden people. These are the kind of people that biden loves. He talked extensively about the level of grief this family must feel after so much tragedy. Theres a headline in the wilmington newspaper today that said people are here to lift the biden family up. You cant help but feel that. This was a family despite all their grief, which has gotten so much comfort, and resilience from this community. You know its been said that inherited from his father the love of the common man. There was a quote in this mornings paper from a man who was the first man in line yesterday for the public viewing just outside the security perimeter. They quoted him as saying he literally walked this community. And knocked on every door. Everybody knows this family. Im not special he said this family has talked to everybody. And another measure of the close knit relationship this family had with the community, yesterday, Vice President biden and jill biden were here greeting mourners public mourners who had come for the viewing. They got here at 1 00 in the afternoon. They did not leave until 11 00 at night. And they shook hands or hugged or greeted every person who came in off the street. Thats a measure of the personable quality this family has, which some suggest might help this family through this terrible terrible grieving process. It says so much not only about the community, and their feelings towards beau biden and the biden family that so many people came out from 1 00 p. M. To 11 00 p. M. To that viewing and so much about the Vice President and his wife that they stood there that whole time. Doug were going to come back to you for more insights as well. You and i were talking earlier, as we were watching that picture of the Vice President walking up this is man who has experienced so much in his life. And the range of emotions hes experienced this week. I was reading the White House Pool report. He was at the wake for his son two days ago and at that night ended up at his granddaughterss middle school graduation. Its stunning that hes able to keep himself together enough to stand there. We have been following through the week. The public wake you saw him daex i dont think we have the photograph. Jill is behind him and his grandkids. Hes bowing his head a little bit and hes covering his brow. We could see that today when we saw the hearse arrive and the casket be brought out. You see these two young children. And yes we should talk about joe, because he has a life in politics. You also have two children who are going to grow up now without a father who, by all accounts happens to be just a wonderful man. We spoke with a reporter who covered him when he was the attorney general. And by all accounts he was extremely accessible. And he had high aspirations. People were expecting him to hopefully run for the governorship. High aspirations. But beau biden was a man who was offered to have his fathers senate seat. He said im going to do this the Old Fashioned way. He didnt want to use his connections to take something he didnt feel was given to him by voters. He was attorney general, turned down running for other high office. And said now i think the time is come and im ready to run for governor. An extraordinary man. Won reelection in delaware you know walked away. 70 , 80 . Unbelievable. As you have been studying beau bidens life as we watch communion there at the church at his funeral. Did you get a sense he was an extraordinary man among extraordinary men, or was he quote unquote, another politician . I think he was destined for great things and he the the name. A marketers dream, the name. Because of the studies i had done this tender moment where the country comes together here around the life of this young man, his his passing didnt surprise me. It has been a recurring story that the children of persons and public life suffer. They suffer accidents, stressrelated key cease. It began at the very beginning. George washingtons stepson, he didnt have any biological sons but jackie his stepson, came to yorktown to serve on his staff, contracted a communal disease, and died within a few days. I think of George Washington adams. Like beau biden, he had a great name. His dad was a president his father was a president. Every one expected great things. There is stress in the public. This as i describe it tender moment as way of bringing democrats and republicans and liberals and conservatives together. Were all human, we all have children and we are suffer death. I was really struck and had been struck. We knew thabo bidetbot beau biden had been sick. They kept it private. I still remember getting an email from the pool report saying beau biden had passed away. I had never met him, never covered him, but yet you had this unbelievable sense of grief and as the story has progressed ore the week i think a lot of people have been surprised by how much this struck them. Well initially he had a stroke in 2010 diagnosed in 2013 but he was given a clean bill of health and you want to believe in those clean bills of health and we asked nicole who covered him if perhaps the public was really keenly aware of just how ill he was. And there wasnt a sense he hadnt been in the public eye late li and, of course he talked about striving for the governorship. There wasnt a ka pam pain so maybe he wasnt do so well. But by all accounts we werent expecting to get an email that he had passed away certainly at aim 46. It was certainly a shock for us and i would suspect so many folks. I know some good friends of the bidens political friends. They said they had no idea. The circle was so small of folks who knew he was sick. Thats how the president and Vice President and obviously beau biden wanted it to be. For those of you just joining us we want to bring you up to date. Youre looking now at the service for beau biden. The Funeral Service at st. Anthonys church in wilmington delaware. In attendance the president , the Vice President. Right now there are some 1,000 in attendance some dignitaries as well. Theres been a service at the church. Then comes communion. And now were awaiting some of the eulogies coming up next. Yes, we are. We had doug earlier and he had mentioned there are folks lining up outside as the hearse was being brought in. And people all across really, the better half of wilmington to mourn him today. So people who arent able to necessarily attend are able to mourn him. And the speakers coming up are pretty amazing. You have the chief of staff of the United States army. He was one of beau bidens commanders when beau biden was in the military when he was in iraq. He was a captain, a military lawyer in the 201st signal brigade. Went to iraq was deployed there in 2009. The president of the United States will also eulogize beau biden. This is something that the president wanted to do, took very personally. Josh said that he considered beau a friend and then beau bidens two siblings ashley and hunter. Ashley and hunter are coming up. Its also interesting how much it seemed to touch the president. It was a saturday night when he passed away. There was a statement that came out from the president that was deeply pressing. Way tonight bring doug in. How close are the first and second families typically. Is this we spend thanksgiving and christmas together relationship . Is this a sunday brunch relationship . How do these interpersonal relationships work . It totally depends on the pretty. President. He makes that decision. I interviewed 19 of the children of Vice President s and they never saw the upstairs of the white house. It totally depends on the president. It seems the bidens and obamas are pretty close. It shows great respect. It mentioned the president went to the family on that sunday to spend the day with them so perhaps that shows there was a close relationship. Also we know the siblings are speaking today and the president , which perhaps shows a very personal side. These recurrences of deaths of children of president s and Vice President s and it goes all the way back. Quincy whose husband died. He died when he was 27 years old. She said another life sacrificed on the altar of politics. So the very perception early was the stress of politics claimed his life. As time went on that became less prominent, it seems. What about the Ripple Effect . This obviously isnt just affecting people in wilmington. I would imagine that the nation is watching this right now. Everyone although they may not know beau or they may not be a resident of wilmington this is captivating the nation at the moment. What kind of Ripple Effect will it have . Its something we will remember with history. Today we have the babe ruth candy bar. The fact is president cleveland was 50 years old and he married his ward who was 21 years old. He was her guardian. They married in the white house. The nation was scandalized. And then they had a baby and her name was ruth. The nation fell in love with the baby and said maybe we like this couple afterall. But she died at 12 years of age of diphtheria. The whole nation went into grief. The Curtis Candy Company made the candy bar baby ruth and we still have it today. Youre watching the communion right now of beau bidens Funeral Services right there. It appears communion has ended and were waiting to hear from the general and then beau bidens siblings who will all offer eulogies. Now well once again listen to services for beau biden. The son lifted the sacrifice of his body food of the journey, mercifully granted and strengthened by us our brother beau may come to the eternal table of christ who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. Good morning. It is my distinct honor to be here today to remember and celebrate the lives and accomplishments of beau biden, a father, a husband, a son, a friend a leader a soldier, and a patriot. A life much too short but a life that had incredible meaning and a life that had an indelible mark on all of us. Beaus family was the center of his life and he always put them first. Hali his loving wife and son and daughter and Vice President joe biden and dr. Jill biden. Hunter ashley and all the biden family. I know how much he loved you so dearly. I know this issis an exceptionally difficult time for a family and words can not express the sorrow that linda and i have for the loss of beau, but as i look out across the audience gathered here today, i reflect on the impact beaus life has had on all of us. All across the nation. In particular the state of delaware throughout the United States army, and most of all his family, friends, and colleagues. I want to start off by talking beau biden the soldier. It was in iraq when i had the incredible honor to serve beside him and really get to know him. Its sometimes hard to explain to other bond formed between soldiers in combat the shared commitment to mission, the unspoken reliance on each other, the indefinable trust that is forged. It is a brotherhood that only a few understand. I always believe an individuals character defines them as a person and a mans character is truly revealed under the most extreme and stressful conditions. I was able to witness firsthand beaus incredible character. One principle with deep moral and ethical roots. He under the importance of
