the sophomore, robert quinn, number 42. he's been flying around making play after play. here he is with the sack. and he's picking up where he left off from last week. he's got five tackles for a loss. actually the carolina defense does. last week robert quinn was haled in the end zone, which forced the safety against uconn which proved to be the winning margin as they won, 12-10. >> pam: yeah, 12-0 going into the third. week one they beat the citadel 40-6. completion to alex taylor. a senior from greensboro, north carolina. picks up six yards. north carolina and its defense ranked in several categories across the nation. first two games only given up eight points for game. 14 so far. one of them on a short field and they continue to keep the yardage down. >> ray: allowing 3.4 yards per play thus far. 107 total yards. >> pam: second and four for east carolina. they've been without their starting running back, dominique lindsay all day. got hurt against west virginia. there is his replacement, brandon jackson, gets off the nice run. all the way down to the 43 yard line. picked up a dozen and a first down. >> ray: nice block there by kevin gidrey, the tight end, leading up on the linebacker creating some extra room for brandon jackson. >> pam: jackson started his collegiate career at kentucky. had to redshirt there. so he never played for them and then transferred closer to home, he's from greensboro. came back to east carolina. pinkney zips it. will get behind his intended receiver, joe womack. ball's incomplete. >> ray: and i believe charles brown got his hand on this at the end there and pulls it out. look at brown close in and reach in there and i believe he pulled in the hand of joe womack to break that thing up. that's a special talent that charles brown has. he's as good of a ball hawker as i've seen. already had a fumble recovery today. >> pam: nickel back last year and is a starting cornerback. a ball magnet. he's always around there. second and ten. charles brown makes another play. stopping brandon jackson after a one-yard gain. >> ray: great recognition by charles brown. he had man-to-man coverage. he ran off about three steps with the receiver. planted. came back. kept to contain the in/outside leverage and delivers in on the tackle. i think he's going to be an all-conference player this year for the tar heels. >> pam: a junior out of maple heights, ohio. very much improved over the last year and there you see a player shaken up. >> ray: five tackles on the day for brown to go along with his fumble recovery. >> pam: that's starting right tackle d.j. scott. 6'6", 323. there is the guy that we're talking about, charles brown, making his first year starting as a corner. third and nine and it gets loud again. tar heels only froush. a little dump down pass to jonathan williams, and he is tackled down about a yard short of the first down by tydreke powell. >> ray: and good hustle by powell, and although he almost jumped on billia ed oed on will pushed him enough for a first down but i think that you have to go for it if you are the pirates right now. i mean it's fourth and one. you're down ten. and you're a little man. you have to roll some dice. you have to take some chances and this is one. >> pam: just over midfield on the 48 of north carolina. jonathan williams in the bark field. he gets it. and he gets the first down. east carolina rolls the dice and they came up three as he got three yards and the first down. >> ray: good call by skip holtz to decide to go for this one. you know this is a situation where escathis game might be st to slip away from you. points on this drive or reestablish in in ball game or it's going to go away. >> pam: d.j. scott, number 66, right tackle, went off of the field a couple of plays ago, back in there for the pirates. pinkney taking the shot downfield for taylor. it bounces around. couple of guys had an opportunity. charles brown of course was down there by the football again. >> ray: i'm not sure who he was throwing to right there, whether it was taylor or his tight end, gidrey, because they both end up near the football. obviously going for gidrey. but -- i mean, taylor purpose. but you see gidrey, 45, he got a hand on that thing. that was one of those up for grab shots. just throw it up and hope. but i like it, you have to spread out that defense. you have it take more deep shots. just the third time today east carolina has tried to go downtown. >> pam: pinkney 9 for 16 for 58 yards and a touchdown. his deepest throw a 19-yarder. whistles before the play. >> referee: 15, offense. that's a five-yard penalty. >> pam: ron cherry, our referee today. he had excessive celebration penalties on our first two touchdowns and none since then. >> ray: got them under control early. >> pam: everyone's calmed down a little bit. east carolina led this game, 7-0 and then down 14-7. tied it up at 14 and new york knicks has scored the last ten points in the ball game. ten-point lead. the biggest of the game for either squad. second and 15 after the penalty. catch by joe womack. charles brown on the coverage and the tackle but it's only a three-yard gain. >> ray: this carolina defense rises up on third down situations. and if you look at what they've done so far this season, just allowing 13.8%. that's just an amazing number. and then today, 2 for 9 is what they've allowed in third down conversions. >> pam: which is actually 13.8%. still really good. >> ray: yeah. >> pam: four receivers in for east carolina on third and seven. pinkney has a man wide open and he hits him for the first down. that's dwayne harris, one of his favorite targets. caught that in front of melvin williams. >> ray: great job of picking up the blitz by the offensive line. you're going to see a comeoff block by number 75, cory dowless. that gave pinkney enough time to get rid of it. >> pam: he picked up a dozen. moved the chains. first down on the 31. this is the tenth play of this drive. coming up, harris who you just saw catch a patch and now he's in at quarterback in their wildcat formation. running all the way, but not far. he is dropped by tydreke powell, who put all 300 pounds on top of harris. outweighs him by about a hundred. >> ray: yeah. and that was the same play that he ran for the touchdown earlier, did harris. and north carolina says, no, you're not going to get that one again. they tried to cut tydreke powell. went down around his legs. he's just too quick. he got off of that and filled the hole. >> pam: east carolina in the wildcat this afternoon. four plays for 11 yards and a touchdown. that was the touchdown ray was referring to by harris earlier in the game. pinkney back in. the regular quarterback. steps up. has to pull it down. and he's taken down a couple of yards downfield by kevin reddick, that true freshman that east carolina recruited. number 4 will 8 in blue. but he wouldn't even take a visit to greenville. >> ray: you're going to have one, two, three guys only rush the passer. that means eight are dropping out on this one. and they've got everything covered. three deep across the top and then five underneath. that's max coverage and they still -- there was nowhere for pinkney to throw the football. >> pam: brings up a third and six. good throw. broken up. a flag is down. and it's against the progressing on the play-calling series by coach shoop. >> pam: shoop has a lot of experience as an nfl assistant. low snap, nice job by yates. not only did he pick it up but he got it to ryan houston right in full stride and houston goes forward for nine yards. >> ray: you mentioned john shoop at the age of 31, was the offensive coordinator for the chicago bears. the youngest ever in the national
