It really isnt safe, its not a good place to b. Trying to get in and out of the city was only by boat. We were running and all the shells were falling around us and that was bad. It was a really intense relationship because youre together going somewhere thats incredibly dangerous, and you have to be on the same page about why youre doing it. From day dot we had this pact, the deal was always if one of us wants to leave, there was no questioning from the other one. Youd never second guess the other person and thats probably saved our lives on numerous occasions. Once you start telling stories and once you start appreciating the impact they have on the viewer or the reader, youve got to keep doing that. Youve got front row seats to the worlds history unfolding in front of your eyes. Its tough because you have to go places that no one else has gone to. For us that was about going closer to the enemy, further forward in the war, behind enemy lines. Yeah, [ bleep ] myself a couple of times. Grow up traveling the world and going in and out of war zones and its somewhat selfish and putting yourself on the line and alicia taught me there was more to it. The streets around us are deserted, everyone who lives here has left town and various gun battles are being fought every couple of streets. Ive always been a champion of what he does. I think its really important. There are oftentimes i wouldnt tell alicia the danger we were going into and she would find out. I knew what he was doing. Woe talked about everything and hed keep the really sad parts to himself i think. Ive always been able to do what im doing, go out there and move back to my normal life. Alicia was a big part of that. Leaving the war and going back to someone you can be normal walleye. He was going to the terrible places and terrible things are happening, he always saw the good in everything. Incredible quality. You either see the good or see the bad. Your cups half full or full and overflowinflowing and benjis he always been overflames of uicing. Overflowing. Annoyingly like that. Its worked to his advantage because he couldnt do what hes doing without being annoyingly positive. Heading up to the front lines where isis troops are trying to take over an exu. S. We continued operating as we did and just a bit more cautious and careful. For years an interesting gangly guy people thinking about roles theyd have to try and resist the russians and its very clear that the work with fox gave her that meeting and trying to tell the story of whats happening in ukraine. You need people that can show you around and intel it and afternoon war zone it is can be sometimes hard to find people like that. I knew her work from various parts. Benji and pierre were going out to dig around the trench line. We got to the trenches and they wouldnt let us film. The two ukraines soldiers said we can film a few of the abandoned villages around the corner and wanted us going in the smaller car and not big white van. The obscurity vehicle couldnt follow because it would be a target and they made a quick decision because they couldnt fit everybody in the car. There were only three Seats Available the decision was made on the ground by the team it was more important for them to have somebody who spoke ukrainian to have sasha go with them rather jaque. Hes our exspecial forces guy and very calm and collected and good to have around. Going five minutes around the corner to film in the abandon villages. It was a bombed out gas station from a little bit further. We were filming outside of one building and heard shelling in the background. That sounded about 20 miles away and not in the vicinitity and not a huge worry. At the time. We quickly finished and then the decision was to go back. We came up to a check point. Nobody at the check point. Three concrete warriors and car would have to stop going armed as we approached the first barrier. The first shell line. About 30 yards in front of us. Immediately pierre shouts quickly, reverse, reverse, get backwards. The ukrainians couldnt get into reverse and out of nowhere, the second one lands. I went black at that point. I say black because it was like death. I wasnt just con cussed but i was out. Out of nowhere, i just hear my daughters voice, honor, and honor says to me, daddy, youve got to get out of the car. Youve got to get out of the car. Got to come to. Im all confused but i open my is straight away eyes straight away and move to open the door outside of the car and as i get outside the car, the third one hits the car itself. I think i was out for a little bit and i wake up first thing i knew i was in trouble and i was on fire and had to stop that so im rolling around and im hitting my legs and trying to get it out. Im looking at myself and im bleeding, bleeding from the head. My leg is off, dangling off below the knee. First thing i hear is pierre saying dont move. Dont move. Russian drones. Pierre managed to get out of the car and lying about 20 feet on the ground and down a little dip at the side of the road. Benji somehow got out of the car and they were talking. I said, pierre, im badly injured. Ive got to government he said dont move. Dont move. The russians. I sat there for awhile. Tried my phone. There was no cell phone reception. Im just sitting there a bloody wreck, didnt think i was going to die or get stuck. He didnt say anything about an injury to me and the car drove past and first car in the last hour. I said i have to go, pi pierre, im badly injured and the adrenaline meant i wasnt feeling the pain but find a way home no matter what. I was pulling myself up and about ten minutes later the car came back and i remember waving and screaming at them and tase saw maine we were saved, you know this is eargo and theyre virtually invisible. I remember they were supposed to be back because later in the afternoon benji was going to take over for lives and we didnt hear from him. I received a call from the jerusalem producer and she was worried because she had not heard back from pierre and benji and checked and one of the Security Consultants spoke to him and said its a black hole and couldnt get the signal out and i spoke to jaque. I assumed everything was fine and speak to you later. Dont awes think about the worst Case Scenario and we didnt immediately think something had happened. But i would say about 1020 minutes past when i received the call from jauque, its been awhile and i havent heard back. This is where we start realizing that something was wrong. They called me to let me know they were missing. We agreed that obviously we werent going to mention to other people, you know, these things have a way of running away. There was a lot of unspoken stuff between us because were both thinking the same thing and didnt want to actually voix calize it. I was at home and between 4 and 5 00 p. M. Uk time and i hadnt heard from benji that day and that was beginning to feel unusual. Id sent him several messages and i could see they werent read but i wasnt worried. I remember very clearly that day not being worried at all. I get a message from a fend on the boarder and says call me immediately. Its an emergency. Hes like listen, im in a cafe with a couple other journalists and hes received a message and its a photo of benjis fox press card with eyes blacked out and mouth blacked out. Theres been an attack. Something really mad has happened. First thing i thought was im going to have to call alicia but i cant with this Little Information and for start i said where he did get that foe foe. Its on Ukrainian Logistics for journalists and this is the person that runs it. The send this Lady A Message and say, im rick findler and im a Family Friend opportunistic Benjamin Hall. Do you have any information on whats happened in she said, yeah, theres been an attack. Benji has been found. Thats all we know whenever heartburn strikes, get fast relief with tums. Its time to love food back. Tum, tum tum tum, Tums Another Call came through, saying two dead, one injured, fox. That sort of shocked me. And i wasn t able to speak for the first 5 or 10 or 15 seconds, i said, are you sure . And the answer was, yes. I picked up the phone, i called new york. Called the bosses. To break the bad news. His name, i knew what it was going to be, i said are you absolutely sure, she sa he said yes, i just listened into put the phone down. I never want another phone call like that. Maybe an hour or so later, i learned it was the Benjamin Hall who was taken to the hospital. That pierre and sasha were missing. Still looking for them. I found out that sasha is missing. Very muc i found out the unit they were with, i called the chief of the unit. The top people at fox were involved right away, immediately went into this emergency operation. I saw the number flash up on my phone, it was an american number. I didnt recognize it i knew it was probably something that was not what i wanted to hear. She straight away introduced herself, i am susan scott from fox news. There has been an accident. And benji is critical. And i said how critical . He said, very critical. And she said keep praying. I remember those words, keep praying, i was like okay. I said where is pierre, she said, he is missing. I said okay. A Got A Phone Call from Suzanne Scott, she said, that they had been missing for 5 hours. I thought, no big deal, he has been missing before, i figured, i said that to suzanne, im sure they are just hownchhunkered down, i really believed that, pierre had 9 lives, he always came back. Whether it was shrapnel in him or kidnapped or whatever. Sure, they could be hiding out in a building, pierre knows his way on the ground. They could have been in a ditch some where, Call Me Pepessimistic after decades of fighting in the war, i thought the worst. I heard on the news there was going be a curfew for 36 hours in kyiv. I thought, okay. If he is hurt, and lying in a ditch where some, wounded, he will not survivor the cold and 36 hour curfew. I started calling everyone that i knew. Messaging them. Saying help. My husband is missing, find him. Find pierre. Pier pierre was always with ben jee benji. The fact he was missing did not make sense. I called rick there my phone ridges, it is alicia. I am like, christ. This is pretty heavy. I answered it, alicia was inconsolable, i said this is when we know, he is in hospital and alive, lets concentrate on that, your mind always goes to worse case. He was so calm. He said i just decidedded that all those emotions, there were other people that were going through worse than i was. It is time for me to get information about him. And that i could relay to alicia. After they found out where benjamin is, they went searching for pierre and sasha. I got another phone call from Suzanne Scott so say he was still missing, they had tto call after off the search because of curfew, then i got really worried. Deep down you file these things, your intuition is telling you, if they have not been ground found in next hour or two or 3 the chances are very slim. March 14, i am in our booth in the pentagon, fox news on a hallway with all of the other television networks. Pentagon press secretary john kirby came to talk to me when french journalist came running down the hall, she said, jen, was your team hit . Kyiv . I called jay wallace, the president of news at fox, i said, jay, has our team been hurt. Was benji hurt . And he said, do you know who was with him . I said pierre. The belief was that benji survived and nobody knew where he was, nobody knew where sasha and pierre were, i said do you want me to help, he said yes, i think who do i know in ukraine who can help. And i remembered my good friend sara. Im sara, ceo of Independence Fund and founder of save our allies, a Global Rescue group that works to help americans and our allies in contested areas in the globe. During the afghan withdrawal, she had a team of people that managed to get 12 thousand afghans out of the afghanistan. Jennifer griffin call mead on march 14, she said do you have a team in ukraine, i said yes, we have the very best people you can imagine. We have someone named sea spray. Sea spray, probably one of our national top extraction experts. Sea spray is tel talented who pro eds a level of expertise. She of he spent a lifetime working in the shadows, he prefers to not have his identity revealed. We purchased ambulances, to do mobile medical decision deeper in ukraine, that is when the call came in sara said, there is a team that . In ukraine that has gone missing, you can find them. Absolutely, we have the team in the room, we had the doctor. I am dr. Richard jadec retired navy surgeon. Im beau whites, i am army special ops. We knew there was a News Correspondent that was injured with a picture of a badge blacked out he was in the kyiv region that is enough to get started. I learned that New York Times sent a reporter and photographer the day before into the same area outside of keep. High suspected that the brigades took our team on a similar route, so he described burned out Furniture Store on a certain corner, i was feeding this information to sea spray. We exercised efergd everything from our arsenal from tracing their cell phones and last known locations and dmrk o and network on the growk ground. Crossing into ukraine, in the dark, surreal, i remember the lines of people coming out. We were reassessing our routes, new information was coming out, battlefield was changing. Ground was lost, and gained. So it keptous our toes. There was no less than 90 checkpoints between lviv and kyiv. There was a lot of chaos. Between checkpoints, and whether or not you went through the right one, it could cause so many delays. Time made sure to also have a Quick Response force in you know ready and waiting. I had individuals from mighto oaks, chad. And you had desant all waiting. Shadows and risking their lives. Jacques located benji, he was at the Border Guards hospital in kyiv, it was a target of the russians, i turned to kirky kirby, he said jen the president game a directive, we cant go into ukraine, i said yes, if i can get them to the border with poland can you get permission for them to be treated a at land those are reserved for u. S. Troops. John kirby went to defense secretary lloyd austin and began the process of getting permission, austin didnt hesitate. I went up stairs, shut ut door and waits, 2 00 about the morning suzanne called and said he is out of surgery here, is conscious. He lost his leg. I remember just thinking, like. Oh, thank goodness. We could deal with that, that is fine. One thing that was going through my mind, the whole time, is when benji and i went to libya, i sent an email to tim that day, saying, well see new 24 hours. We got told that tim was killed. Somebody said, even the cool guys get hit. That just rang in my head when benji not hit. Ill say it once, le benji is cool at hell, right, that hit home. Even cool guys get hit. I asked and he by himself. , she said jacques is with him. Jacques cause not want to be interviewed about the evacuation, i think it is too painful for him. We make it to the hospital. I linked up with Orthopedic Surgeon who was running the show for ben. He spoke perfect english, trained in the u. K. Benjamin was brought to us from another hospital, he has got amputated his right leg. And there were signs of Compartment Syndrome on his left leg. There was a great risk of air attack on the hospital. He was in the the operating room, he would go out and patrol the perimeter. Almost every night, i had a duty with a weapon, but when the patients were, i did my work. I did surgery. I had reached back out to Jennifer Griffin and i said, he is stable. But he is in a military target. In an area that is getting bombed right now. And he needs further medical care in the next 24 to 48 hours, we tbheed need to move now. I opened my eyes, im in a hospital room. I assume that im in russia. And i think ive got to get out of here. How am i going to escape and get home . The leg had come owl of off. The airspace was contested any helicopter would have been shot down, road mark were pock marked. I didnt want to drive, i was worried that shrapnel in his neck would sever something. At that point i received a call from dave a phenomenal military officer. Lieutenant color colonel dave is a decorated Greegreen Beret with more than a dozen appointment, he was in poland. He is an incredible special operations. He has a ton of experience and heart, he will lay his entire almost 20 year career down to do the right thing. Dave hit up sea spray, and said i might have a solution for you, the polish Prime Minister was having a meeting in kyiv. There is a train leaving tonight going back to poland. From kyiv. Dave knew that this was a secret mission. But the only way to get benji out was to get him on the polish Prime Ministers train. He said, i think i have an option if we get the right approval in place from the pentagon, the polish special Operations Command and ambassador and administration, and all of these things that normally take months, we could do that in next couple hours, i think you have a ride out. So begins a story that you wouldnt believe it if hollywood tried to tell it. Despite Security Dangers Prime Ministers of poland, Czech Republic and slovenia went by train to meet with president zelenskyy in kyiv. The Prime Ministers meeting ended 6 hours early. On we were concerned we would miss the train window, the Prime Minister is not waiting. I was reached out to by one of Polish Operator who said you are good to get on the train, but i cant guarantee you will make it here, if you dop lea dont leave now, you wont make it. We started packaging up ben, getting him ready to move. For the linkup at the train stationed. Station. That is an event in and of itself. Only thing he ever talked about was he wanted to know at alltimes where his phone was. The phone. She is bringing it. He wanted to talk to his girls. You good . Okay. Yep. Keep moving. Were moving, ambulance chockfull of bep ben. The doctor, jacques, myself and sea spray, in a city where streets are empty. The drivethru kyiv to railway station. Was one of the hard estimators. This is real. Every checkpoint they thought we were the russians. The checkpoints are hostile. Because it is after curfew, no one is surplus supposed to be out and moving. Guns were up at ambulance as if we were invading, they didnt believe i was injured. They were poking at bens wounds, they were that suspect of us. The checkpoints pulled all of his bantag bandages back, they saw the condition he was in and lit us g we would start over. Every checkpoint. The same song and dance. We made it to Strai Tratrain stationed. Station. He was in a lot of pain. And never complained. Not when we carried him, not any of it. My mind wouldnt stop. I could not turn it off. I couldnt stop thinking. Nonstop. And that was just 10 hours of focus. Keep going. Keep getting there. Early hours next morning, i got information that they found pierres body in kyiv city morgue. My heart stopped. All i could see was that amazing handle bar mustache and grin, it did not seem possible, it did not seem real. Once Police Arrived and our guys were allowed in, they reached out and said, 100 confirmation it is pierre. Yeah. All i said was okay, and i put the phone down. I could not do anything, i was paralyzed. Im going to take a break. He was one of the two people who knew some of my secrets. Took them to grave. I informed the bosses of the findings, they asked me to take part in the call where we were going to break the news to michelle, pierres wife. Pierre was my soul mate. I just keep thinking hes going to come back. I miss him. He is gone. Thats it. She cried. But she was wanted to know what we were planning to do, what the next steps are, what our plan is. He is my husband, and im going to go and get him. Pierre, has been with fox for years. In and out of war zones. On the run, gunmen are coming close, pierre, lets go. Before ukraine, pierre on the ground in iraq. In afghanistan, in syria. He covered conflicts between countries, and helped report from middle of riots. He offer our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved pierre, and to the family of journalist sasha, she was just 24 years old, serving as a consultant helping our teams navigate the city, our correspondents antrou Deeseproducers Say she was hard working, funny, kind and brave. I was destroyd at that point it was crushing in every way, sasha meant the world to me. Losing hlose her made my world smaller. We could not have done most of what we did without her. Across the bridge. She is amazing contact and amazing sense of humor, she was great. The fact she is no more, is something that doesnt strike you. It is something that keeps oncoming as a point of pain. A point of profound sadness when you file huge part of your life is no more. She was a dj, she was an artist, she was young, stylish. Hwe have a joke, she would be nicely dressed under her flack jacket, it was like, you looking combat chic. Chic. Pierre and sash were fun to work with. Happy birthday. Remembers that that video cuts deep, the moment when they laughed. And smiled and pierre joked as always, sasha always, smiling. But, that unforgettable smile, that is impossible to forget in every way. So many people loved sasha. I dont think that i really understood how many until i went to her funeral. And you saw all of these really interesting people show up. She was part of a community. Too much emotion to remember the words it was basically something that rips your heart out. Knowing that this is i like to move it, move it you like to. Move it were reinventing our network. Fast. Reliable. Perfectly orchestrated. The United States postal service. Best move ive ever made. Ask your dermatologist about cosentyx®. Once we got benji across the border to poland to safety, we turned our attention to thousand return pierre to his wife michelle. It was a little bit of a blur the next couple of days, we were trying to get him out. This was still a war zone. Americans getting permissions and to cross borders with a casket is not easy. I said that i would want to go and retrieve his body to which michelle said, im going in with dragon. If i have to go to kyiv and brag him out i will. We in getting Pierre Out Of Kyiv became another journey, the ukraine an driver of the hearst, didnt have the paperwork to leave. Sea spray offered that team of the standing by. I dont think we felt that we could really take a deep breath, the mission was not over. We refitted the trucks, and started to make our way back in we took custody of pierre. Security guys had managed to find know irish flag from kyiv, they draped Itest On Coffover the coffin it was the lit up in the back. Like a holy light. Pierre was an irish citizen. To have that irish flag draped over his casket meant a lot to his family. We went to a local morgue. Where michelle wanted to see him. I needed to see him, i needed to see it was pierre. It was pierre. We spent about half an hour or 45 minutes looking at him and talking about him. We stood around the coffin, with a bottle of jam jame sons whiskey. Beautiful, rough riding but fun, fun. Love you. We teste toasted his health. And his life. We flew to ireland to his family, we were broke breaking down of couple of minutes. I had to officially identify him at the morgue in dublin. In dublin i got in a taxi, the driver asked me why i was there, i told him, he said, that pierre. He was a hero. The whole of ireland knew about him. We had his funeral in the local church. I chose a photo of pierre i had taken of him that was cheeky and showed his side. Speaking at pierres funeral was such an honor, there were people there who knew him longer, we were all dealing with the shock and horror of what happened. We wanted to be behind the cameras. Michelle is his life long partner. They had a grad great love affair, when i saw her in ireland it broke my heart. He was closest to the his little sister and her husband shawn, they live not far from where we do in london, they have two little boys, he would make excuses to go to their house and give them a bid time st bedtime story and there are bathing his family adored hi mara, are you sure you dont want To Go Bowling with us tonight . We cross the border to poland, jen griffin worked closely with the pentagon, we were met by a u. S. Black hawk. We were then passed on to the americans. The sent me a video, i see the helicopter. Lift up. Bens father was evacuated by americans, it waan emotional thing for men to be in the same situation. Go. When i knew he was alive, he was in germany, i was sending him voice notes and video. Morning mate. Rick here. Something to keep him entertained. The poor guy is just lying there. Been quite a serious acciden accident. Im quite an annoying person, i wanted to irritate him with messages. Everyone else in the kitchen at the time is fine. Gosh, rick. I cant begin to describe rick. I didnt go to the hospital. Blame 8 litt only time i get emotional is when i think about certain people who have been so kind to us. Sorry. Rick. Is amazing. He absolutely stepped in when benji has been away, he didnt need to be asked. There are some people you can trust with your life. And who you turn to in some dark times, he was there the day after this happened to hold my children, whatever he could. I flew on landstuhl to see benjis, you dont notice all of the injuries, he just looked like benji, typical benji, smiling. It is one of the few times that i cried, everything that i was trying to do, of the get home and back to my family, i said im sorry. Im really sorry. There was a decision made at landstuhl to send him to Brook Army Medical Center with the best burn unit in the military. Prepare to move. They put me in a c17. They strapped me on a political plate. And they put all these things on top of me like baggage and pipes. For 24 hours, i was strapped to this thing. I could not move. I was in there thinking, i cant do of this, this is awful. I didnt know what my legs were like, i was in a bad place. It was 3 00 in the morning when the doctor and i mit met benji to the flight. He said, we got a plan for you, down worry. We understand that this was blast injury in the face of that Mortar Attack in a very dirty environment. Prepare to lift. Lift. You good. From then oit moved quickly, the operation happened straight away. High was st he was the still critical, 17 burn, already hadda. Amputation on his right leg. Middle aspect of his foot was flown apart, his lif lefthand was missing the middle portion. I had a big operation last night. To regain my legs and my limbs, and my life. I am comfortable where i am right now, spiking to the family, knowing we have a plan parsed out ahead. Things are getting better, today is day one of the start of a video diary for me. I decided if i had a bad day or feeling sad, just to tell people, not against the my natural instinct to di do, that it worked wonders. 21 of april, i am a good mood, i had my operation yesterday, all seem to go well and i got off phone with allays alicia that makes me feel better and i saw the video from the girls at home that live very much. I love you. I love you, so much, i really want you to come back this very moment. The doctors think they a patient recovering better when their family are around them, we should all move and live there but we have 3 children. Priority through all of us was to make sure they were not worried or upset. Hi, da daddy. I didnt want them to see in. My decision was to get better. I am coming home. Not as soon as i would like, but i am coming home. He needs someone there he needs someone that add vo advocates for you a as a patient, whatever you need, you have that person there. That is where jacques came in, being jacques, no frills was like, yes, okay. Okay. My new hand is being delivered, look a look at that. If we have any doubts about what these guys do when you are asleep, dont be. The rest of me feels a little bit strange, but jacques has been saving my day, i feel out of it. Jacques was right there at the beginning. When benji was located. He was the right thera his side when transported out of the war zone. Jacques then spent months by benjis side. In the hospital. As he went through every surgery. Jacques never left bens side, he was a sweetheart. Not very manly, but he was john spot. He is like a Father Figure in many ways, he was there. Every minute of every day that i was injured. I could not have gotten through it without him, jacques was behind me the times that i fell. Out of nowhere hands were there to grab me, lift me up. Jacques was there when i cried. Told me it would be okay. Ben had goals to do a lot go back to work. We had to start withstanding up, walking and getting stronger. First day i got a leg, i took one or two steps on it. Loved it. Every day was about doing more. Just getting better. It feels like a corner has been turned i reached a point that to be honest. At some point was not sure i would make it. Days that were more challenges than others, benji would routine lets look at me and say, okay, what do you got, ill have a good day tomorrow, that was benjis affect throughout this entire process. He is one of the most resilient individuals i have ever met. On the day this happened i was sitting on the grounds i had no leg. I could not reach anyone, phones were not working one thing i thought, that was i have to go home. Whenever it takes im going back to see the famlize. This you could tell her energy nervous energy, she would not shut up. But interesting the closer we got to the airport, the quieter she got. Then you could tell it started to hit home. That moment, i was sitting on the plane, waiting to see alicia. Alicia. It kind of felt like a first date, i was so nervous. I didnt know what to say to her. She was looking out the window. She had a couple seconds to herself, she sat there in the car on her own, just head in her hands. For a few seconds to certificasoft of gather herself. I remember we hugged. And cried. We made that decision not to be together, we made the decision for her to stay with the daughters. That was bringing back to together everything that i fought for we all fought for, incredible. Incredible. When he landed and i went to collect him, he felt like okay. You just feel like a huge sense of relief. We have done it. The joy that benji landed in the u. K. It was a Sill Braillcelebration of what they had gone through in this one moment. It was lovely. Ready. Yeah. I know they had been told not to run out. But anna ran out and grabbed me, would not let go. And iris as well, sat down and just held them, held on to them. Iris was a little bit more cautious, i was worried hig she held on to alicia for a while, she just slowly bit by bit she came a bit closer, and relized it was me, that i was really back. I hadnt met benji until after i i went to the house and met him for the first time, played with their kids. No doubt about that. Pierre saved my life, if he had not gotten out of the car, i would be dead. I think well have a lasts friendship, benji said pierre saved his life. I can thank pierre every time i hug my children, i think about him a lot. Because, michelle, his family lost a huge amount, they lost the very center of their of their lives. And i didnt lose that.
