cumbersome and difficult for them to get basic check-ups. basic medical care. i'm not talking about the surgeries or the physical therapy, but regular check-ups, because they have to travel far to the v -- to the va hospitals. often they have 50/50 to raise -- >> greta: what is 50/50 -- >> ravels to raise money to bring them to the -- raffles to raise money to bring them to the hospitals. consistently they shared they would like to picks did in their own communities. i began to do research. talking with some of the people who work at va hospitals, talking with some of the veterans. we put together a veteran vouchers program. so we can work with the va to certify local doctors that the veteran pick. so that a basic check-up doesn't require scheduling your whole life around getting to this one doctor's appointment. what we are hoping is help the va hospital to streamline some of their treatment and care. also, empower the veterans who have fought for our freedom, they should have freedom and the final say over their basic health care. >> greta: you bring up the issue of veterans and health care. naturally, my attention goes to the men and women currently serving in pakistan, afghanistan. pakistan is a mess. to put it ly. intelligence service there, double dealing us. if you are elected to the senate, one of the issues that is going to be on your plate is pakistan. what do you think we should do about pakistan? >> first and foremost work with the ngo's on the ground. the nongovernmental organizations serving the people. we have to keep in mind our conflict is not with the citizens. the private citizens of these rogue nations. they are with certain leaderships, certain terrorist organizations that are bred in potentially hostage countries. if we work on the ground to empower the local people who are hungry for freedom. who crave democracy, we can help create an ally over in the middle east. we have to keep in mind, under president musharraf's rule pakistan was a great ally for news the war on terror. we have to help them to get become to what they once were. >> greta: how about afghanistan? president karzai has been described by a lot of people as being corrupt. he's our partner. >> right. afghanistan is crucial because of its positioning to india. and the fact that its neighbors do have we are weapons. again, what i propose to do in afghanistan is to work with the local groups, so they can have a stable democracy. because afghanistan is strategically positioned in the hard of the mideast around the countries who have nuclear weapons. it is very important that they become an ally of ours as well. what i would say about, you know you hear president obama talking a timetable for withdrawal. we have to make our foreign policy decisions based on effectiveness. not on a timetable. >> greta: if it is not working, are you opposed to leaving? >> that's what i by just there. how is it not working? why is it not working? >> greta: is it working now? >> well, you know that's up in the air. but we can withdraw and already the consequences. if we withdraw now we are sending a message to terrorists on the ground over there we bullied a super power out of our country. what we are going to do is end up empowering them. we don't want to do that. we don't want to inspire them any more to think they have a greater power than they do. because they don't. if we withdraw now because they are bullying us harder think of the consequences on what that will do to our own forces back here. the best defense is a offense. we have to strengthen our u.s. military once again. our u.s. military needs to be feared by rogue nations and terrorists. so there's many things that we can do right here at home on the ground to do that. >> greta: let's go to iran as long as we are making our trip around the world. what would you do about iran? they want nuclear energy not nuclear weapons. the rest of the world says they are trying to get nuclear weapons. ahmadinejad is very jen towards the united states and threatening towards -- israel what should we do? >> several things. first rebill and repair our relationship with israel. israel has traditionally been a strong al life i don't believe this administration has been as friendly and supportive to israel as america could be. and as america should be. israel deserves our respect. they've been an ally and they are a strong country. >> greta: you don't think we are giving that to them now? >> i don't think we've done everything we can. a year or so ago, when israel talked about doing what they needed to do to strengthen them when iran started making threats, president obama scolded them. you don't scold one of our allies for doing what they need to do in their own national interests. i think there's a lot we can do to repair some potentially damaging things this administration has done with israel. i'm not saying this administration isn't a friend of israel. i'm saying we can do more. because we need israel. we need to be a from of israel and help her be strong once again. when iran says that we wanna wipe out the west, they mean us. they mean america. and they mean israel. so we've got a united goal to be strong again. the other thing that we can do is make sure that iran doesn't get nuclear weapons. the way we do that is strengthen our relationship with those countries who might be providing them the uranium and things like that, that they need. >> greta: do we have time? frankly, some people like ambassador bolton says it is inevitable, they will have nuclear weapons. do you think it is inevitable? >> that they have nuclear weapons? i didn't know i don't have access to the intelligence that would make that decision. perhaps sitting on the foreign relations committee, i will. i would love that i've met with some of the iran officials who live here in wilmington, a former ambassador lives here, i had a long conversation with him about what is going on. some of the people actually think that they are making threats that aren't backed up. what we have to keep in mind with our foreign policy, remember what ronald reagan did, his foreign policy was summed up in four words, we win, they lose. he did that by not backing down, by not compromising, by strengthening our military and making it once again that the threat of military action, u.s. military action had some teeth . right now, it didn't. that is tragic. we need to not just strengthen our military but our economy again too. we owe so much of our debt to foreign nations even secretary clinton said that it is beginning to impact the decisions wex> can make in foreign policy. it is a whole bull of wax. we have to strengthen our military but our -- homeland as well. we have to get back on track economically so we are a super power once again. >> greta: is there a democratic politician you admire? >> hillary clinton. i've gotten a lot of flak from politicians. i'm not saying i endorse all her policies. she's a strong woman operating in a man's worm. she was a great senator. and i think she is holding her own and doing it well and she has gotten a lot of criticism that wouldn't give to men. so i admire her for that. >> greta: you think media is harder on women? >> absolutely. >> greta: what makes you say that? >> for one, gloria steinem said there's the -- i forget what she called it, reciprocity. would they attack a man? would they say the things about a man they are saying about a certain female? i think across the board, there's a lot of discrimination that guess on, especially with women in politics. we are under -- we are held to a different standard and they are talking about things they wouldn't talk about for women. i talked about that on your network several times during the 2008 presidential campaign. they talked about hillary clinton's hair or what she wore during the debates. they talked about what the other candidates said. there's definitely a double standard. >> greta: who is the republican christine o'donnell most admires? >> that's how i interpreted it. in listening, i'm not an audio tech, obviously it sounded like jerry brown may the comment. >> greta: joining us live san francisco chronicle reporter. john, has there been an admission by anyone as to who made the remark about meg whitman? >> the tape is jumbled and kind of inaudible. the broken people say absolutely positively it wasn't jerry brown i was one of his aides. the whitman people are keeping quiet. they say, at best, he let that sort of talk go on. >> greta: was there any apology? >> sure, there was the basic apology as the political stuff saying if i offended anyone, i'm sorry. and that was about it. [ talking over each other ]o5ho [ unintelligible ] >> could you apologize all you want. the cat is out of the bag. it is being talked about. >> greta: was the apology, i assume i was received by meg whitman, did she accept it? >> we haven't her anything from meg whitman yet. her spokeswoman said thanks for the an this is a terrible thing to say, a slur a despicable thing. what is somebody that is supposed to be a major politician letting this kind of talk go on around him. they are not going to let him off easy on this >> greta: i'll call it boarish behavior. i suspect there's a lot of boarish behavior that guess on all the time in politics. the thing i find intriguing the today the national organization for women came out. what did they do? >> i haven't heard what happened from new york. i will tell you on monday, a bunch of women's groups throughout the state are gonna have simultaneous press conferences in sacramento, san francisco and los angeles. all saying how terrible meg whitman and carly fiorina would be for women in california. this may have been scheduled but i didn't hear about it. didn't get notice until 4:00 this afternoon. >> greta: it is interesting, what i understand the california chapter endorsed jerry brown as a result of this. i guess the thing that struck me as so bizarre, they did endorce him before. and they give no credit to meg whitman for being a ceo and breaking that glass ceiling. whether you are for her or against her as governor. she has done what so few other women have done in terms of breaking glass ceiling and the women don't give her credit for that one. >> certainly too it is not like carly fiorina, a pro-life candidate, on the wrong side of a lot of the -- what they consider the women's issues. for the most part meg whitman is pro-choice. and is pretty much on their side. she however, republican. that's not gonna be a plus for a lot of women's groups in california. >> greta: is this likely to move the needle in terms of poll numbers? is it going to impact votes? i know the business about the housekeeper seems to have some movement. does this one matter? >> i think it matters. the question right now is how much legs it has? if it is a one or two day wonder it is not going to make any difference. if something keeps stinging saying this is the way jerry brown and his people talk in private when there's no female voters around that can stick and it can be important. women make up 53% of the likely voters in california. are very, very strongly democratic. if they won't go to jerry or if they go to meg whitman or if he don't show up on election day it is going to be going to be very, very hard for him. >> greta: john thank, you. fascinating races going on, thank you. >> thank you very much. >> greta: next, did you hear what harry reid's son just said? he's running for nevada governor. we are suspicious his father wants to wring his neck. >> then dick morris guess on the record. >> plus the tea party comes to virginia hosting the first tea party convention. ken cuccinelli is here to go on the record, next. you'll never go back to your old duster. [ fele announcer ] sorry, duster, but swiffer 360 dusters attract dust with over 500,000 fibers and lock it away to clean better than a feather duster. swiffer's built smarter to clean better. ♪ she blinded me wi science . >> greta: now this could be awkward around the reid dinner table. senate majority leader harry reid's son rory is running for governor of nevada. during a debate he said his -- this about the health care law his father fought so harford. >> i don't deny that nevada needs to be vigilant on this issue. the law that was passed gives time for the new system to go into effect. but there is potential for it to put significant pressure on states. because medicaid rates could go up significantly. >> greta: uh-oh. joining us live dick morris. i guess in every family there would be different opinions, especially on politics. that one sort of hurts. >> generally, the time for children to rebel against their fathers is before they run for governor while he's running for senator. rory is absolutely right. this federal health care law requires that every state cover 133% of the poverty level unmedicaid. that's about 32 or 33,000 of income. nevada currently covers only half that. so nevada would taste a huge tax inreese -- would face a huge tax increase when that takes effect in 2014. rory reid is right. but that helping harry. >> greta: nevada the worst unemployment, number one in unemployment right now too. not like nevada has any cash under the mattress. >> right nowed today, the republican candidate is leading -- in all 10 seats that they need to take control. and the narrowest of those is a three point lead in nevada by angle. it guess up to 45 point lead in north dakota. -- it goes up to a 45 point lead in north dakota. the next closest to five or six. so the republicans are opening this race up. the conventional media is trying to sell the case the democrats are coming back. they are not. if anything, the move in the last week has been heavily republican. >> greta: what about in delaware? we just went to delaware today to interview christine o'donnell. she is down, from all the polls i see, about 17 points. it is hard to move that, 17 points down. do you believe those polls? >> those are old polls, first of all. they are about two weeks old. i've not seen a published poll taken after september 21st, and i checked yesterday. i think in the interim is the witchcraft and all that nonsense faded. she has probably closed the gap. a word to the wise on this, this is a point i make on dickmore -- dickmorris.com. these numbers are what pollsters call likely voters. that assumes 70% of the registered voters vote. they won't. it will be 40%. when you model it at 40%, republican candidates have an 18 point again remember nick edge over democrats. if you have a candidate final poll in dell -- delaware she is done by six or seven, she probably going to win. i thought she did a good job on your show. i thought she passed the bar, which is she is okay. >> greta: i didn't ask about witches. i was interested in what -- sort of interesting we talked to people in delaware. within person said that he was reasonably interested in the senate race. i said who are the candidates? didn't know or couldn't remember. i thought that's not good for either one of them. another within i spoke to always voted republican. he say he -- said he thought he was going to vote for coons because he was afraid to vote for o'donnell. afraid of her views. i'm not so sure how effective her campaign is. >> i think that, as the witchcraft and that nonsense clears away. people are going to understand that coons wants to raise their taxes. o'donnell doesn't. coons favors the stimulus spending and doesn't want to repeal obama care. they agree o'donnell who wants to repeal it and won't go with those tax increases and deficit spending. ultimately, those rich use i think will rise to the surface. i would not count christine o'donnell out. by the way, the ran party is aiming too low right now. -- the republican party is aiming too low right now. they are going for the 50 seats the low-hanging fruit. go after the 50 seats beyond that. i think if the republicans contest 100 seats in the house of representatives go in there and fight, including barney frank and steny hoyer and a bunch of 'em, i think they can win 80 or 90 of 'em. >> greta: dick, thank you. >> next, the inside story on jury ver's first tea party convention. attorney general cuccinelli guess on the record, next. are we paying -- paying our enemy to kill our own troops? >> they don't appreciate elected officials being members so much. groupy seems to fit a little better. i certainly share the limited government and protective instincts for the constitution that are the centerpiece of the tea party. and five been to more of the events than i can -- and i've been to more of the events than i can con. today was enormous thousands there. folks who i knew coming up saying it was great all day every session the speakers. they did a spectacular job. 100% volunteer. the enthusiasm was incredible. >> greta: who spoke? were these people from virginia or national figures who i might know? >> from all over. they some authors like matt spaulding of the heritage foundation was here. matt has wren a couple books, we still hold these truths i'm reading it at the moment. he's one of their co-authors on the heritage kid to the coons . he's a lot of history he was sharing with them and the application today to policy. authors. folks from the patrick henry institute. you've got a lot of think tank type folks and grass roots activists speaking to people. many of whom are still learning how can i best have an impact? how can we work together? one of things that is going to come out of this is dozens and dozens of tea party organizations who are going to make contact here in virginia for the first time. next year unlike most of the rest of the nation we have legislative races all 140 members of our general assembly are up. these tea party active s are going to -- activists are going to have an immense impact in 2011 as they have in 2010. >> greta: you have the health care -- you have brought a lawsuit challenging the nation -- national health care. yesterday in michigan a private group they challenged on the same grounds as the florida case. yours is different because you have a specific statute. in michigan the judge say the national health care law is constitutional. under the commerce clause is that the federal government has the authority to demand that people buy these insurance policies. that's not particularly helpful to you. >> well, obviously we like to see all the folks on the limit government side aren't the table. but we don't expect that to happen. we know is going to be decided by the supreme court. it is interesting, the judge while acknowledging things like the legislation is unprecedented, that all of the commerce clause cases to date that the supreme court has ruled on, deal with regulating activity. things people have voluntarily didn't. he proceeds, despite all that, to say that simply deciding to do nothing, to remain inactive is the same as activity. so, if the government can regulate activity, and they can regulate it when you do nothing, inactivity, there's nothing they can reach. this ends federalism. it ends the know of having a government of limited powers. it blows the door open to federal power. i don't think this is going to hold up. obviously, in virginia a week from monday, we'll have our summary judgment argument. i expect we'll hear from the judge in november on his ruling here in virginia. i'm not too concerned that the michigan rule something going to affect us. this has been thoroughly briefed in virginia. i expect ultimately we are going to prevail once we get through the supreme court. >> greta: attorney general, thank you. on the 18th, we hope to be there. nice to see you. >> thanks greta, hope to see you there. >> greta: now far from home to afghanistan where the news gets worse. new senate report says many private security contractors hired to guard american bases in afghanistan are funneling u.s. cash to afghan war s linked to the taliban. in other words our tax dollars could be helping our enemies to put our troops in danger. john bolton joins us live. that's horrible. >> there is no excuse for it. it calls into question the whole strategy of using contractors rather than american troops. it also calls into question the oversight that our military commanders in the field and their civilian bosses in washington have been applying. the idea that there is so little knowledge what is going on there, you are hiring taliban affiliated locals, to guard our troops is just mind-boggling. >> greta: to be on the team! to he me it is like, it is absolutely insane that we would hire people who could smuggle things in, all sorts of things in to harm our troops. and our troops are sitting there trying to do their best job. if our civilian government doesn't at last get guards to protect them it is intolerable. >> we've seen the consequences. we've had cia personnel assassinated because they weren't adequately vetting the people they were using. this risk to our forces is great. we remembered to what happened to the marines in beirut when hezbollah attacked with suicide bombers the barracks there. the notion these taliban affiliate why its are this close to our troops could lead to a similar situation. i thought i was interesting the duration of this report. secretary gates has been secretary of defense for four years this is essentially all occurred on his watch. he has not spoken to this report, this senate report yet. i think it is going to be interesting to see what he has to say. >> greta: i read in the paper this morning it wasn't a one-time deal. the report was repleat with instances at this very moment, this is happening. >> exactly. which means that the troops are vulnerable to infiltration and suicide bomber attack. >> greta: let's go to pakistan. another unbelievable story. a tape going around the internet, in which it looks like, they haven't authenticated it yet, some pakistani soldiers executedded some young people who were blind folded. the tape is breathtaking. what are we going to do about that? we some responsibility in the sense that we are paying money to this military. >> the chief of staff of the pakistani military has or add investigation. and has promised strict discipline against these people if they are members of the pakistani military. it is a gruesome tape, no doubt. the general also points out that the terrorists themselves have used pakistani uniforms, in the past, to try and discredit, the pakistani army we need to see what is going on. i didn't think we should rely just on their investigation. we need some knowledge of it as well. >> greta: i don't doubt that. this has been on the internet for sometime. it took some pounding and outrage. not like he says you are right i think we are going to investigate. i just got win of this. they've none about it. >> their first reaction was to deny it. there is no excuse for it. these counter terrorist operations up around where this video purportedly comes from are very, very violent operations. >> greta: senator leahy has an amendment that impacts this. >> a provision that says the united states should cut off aid to foreign -- >> greta: should? >> it is mandatory although there's a waiver provision. a cut off for gross violations of human rights. clearly going to be looked at here if in fact this turns out to be pakistani military. what i think we need to say is that it certainly unacceptable to us. we ought to be making it unacceptable to the pakistanis. the idea that decided from the top, i think you have to look at. every military contains people who violate their training and doctrine, including the u.s. military. >> greta: this tape looks more orchestrated. doesn't look like some bad apple in the group. >> it is a bad video. whether it is sufficiently coming from top chancers to warrant application to the leahy amendment, i don't think we know yet. >> greta: ambassador, thank you. >> thank you. >> greta: a new witness comes for. was amen man shot while jet skiing with his wife or did something else happen? >> there's not a lot of great stuff. the good thing the private sector was adding jobs. the bad news it wasn't enough to make up for jobs the government was cutting. >> greta: was there a net increase in jobs? >> no, there was a net decrease. >> greta: that is a problem. >> that is a big problem, yes. >> greta: interesting, the president and administration is talking about the jobs that were increased. sort of falls if in the background when you factor out the jobs that have been lost it is a net decrease. >> top line number is bad. private sector hiring, fine, great we are happy to see that. but not enough to make up for the jobs we are still cutting, not even close. >> greta: any -- they think is' a good path? >> i don't think anyone in the white house would say in is a good path. i think you have to go out and say something positive to keep the american public holding on. i don't think anyone is cheered by these numbers. there's still disagreement about what is cause you go the employment rate to stay so high and how do you address that? >> greta: what about the under employment rate. first explain what is the unemployment rate? >> a broader measure of people working part-time but want a fulltime job or say they want a job and have given up looking they can find anything if that were the actual rate would it be 17% and up. >> greta: looking at these numbers, housing stars. any sort of number we can look at, it is there any number in the last three months that can tell us we are on our way up?
