The freedom ball tonight is expected to be the big one, about 25 thousand attendees larger than the first two. The liberty ball has 8000 on hand i am told that we will look for the muchanticipated first dance to occur between mr. And mrs. Trump while they are at the Convention Center and then they will move over to this location where we are for the Armed Services ball later on in the evening. While all of this is going on we should point out following a day of pomp and circumstance and even protests around the city that this is putting together a new administration and is also well underway. General James Madison who was seen moments ago being sworn in as the defense secretary by the Vice President mike pence the first cabinet secretary to be confirmed by the senate. The vote 981 only new yorks Kirsten Gillibrand voted against it another general john kelly was confirmed by the senate as well for secretary of homeland security. 11 democrats voted against the nomination. President trump released a statement about the thing hes pleasedwith the confirmations to call the senate to as he put it fulfill their constitutional obligation to quickly confirm the rest of his cabinet. A short time ago we also did see the president in the oval office signing papers to confirm those nominations. We were talking about signing the First Executive order as president ordering federal agencies to ease the burden on obamacare getting the ball rolling on repeal and replace. We also heard a short time ago that the white house chief of staff for Reince Priebus is issuing a governmentwide order immediately freezing regulations so trish and active evening and we are just getting warmed up in terms of the inaugural ball. This president of ours has been president for just about eight hours, has talked about populist issues from the moment he declared his search for enough support to win the presidency of the United States. He was scoffed at and he was laughed at as you well know in his early days particularly by media elite who were just so sure that all of those very unestablishment types in the Republican Party would disappoint him mightily. He tore them to pieces by talking about the people, the issues that matter to the American People and they were soon in his Rearview Mirror and here we are on inauguration night and president donald j. Trump who has taed about the people instead of the nonsense of the elite is president of the United States. Its just a glorious moment. Everyone ive talked to today without exception has been so excited about the prospects. Not all are convinced that he will succeed but they are absolutely excited about the prospects Going Forward under this administration. Obviously senator schumer is something of a holdout and a couple of others and even a few elites in the Republican Party but this man has excited a nation. Trish he certainly has lou. Now hes got a lot of work to do and a lot of promises to live up to. A lot of people are expecting great things from him in the first 100 days. I would save one of the distinct differences is the fact that he is used to getting stuff done. You mentioned yourself based on that bottom line, based on productivity so what can we expect . Lou yeah, i think there is a lot of course being made appropriately so that he is a businessman and its also very important that he has never run for Elective Office before, that he is a man who is accomplished. He has made a lot of money and he has made a lot of friends over the course of the last year and a half and i dont think a lot of those elites by the way contemplated that donald trump would become increasingly popular. The national leftwing media certainly did not contemplated because they are trying to they have been trying to run this president down at every step of the Campaign Journey that brought him to the white house. This is a man who is going to get it done. Trish it may have helped him. The very fact that the media has been so out to get him. It made him the underdog. It made them more vulnerable in some ways to people. People felt as though they needed to go out and stick up for him and vote for him because theywere so angry at the establishment of what the media was trying to do. Lou i was thinking those vulnerable moments thinking about donald trump on the campaign trail. I miss the multiple part. This was a man who was throwing his fist at every opponent and he was defending the working man and woman, working families, middleclass families, the basic values of this nation and every Campaign Stop he had a hell of a good time doing it. I think the American People embraced the man they knew would be fighting for them in the country. Trish lou when i say vulnerable i remember sitting there at the convention with you and ted cruz came out on stage to give you big long speech and walked away and he did a courageous thing. He came out and greeted the crowd as though to say its okay but once again it was just another example of this typical politician coming out against him. When i say vulnerable, thats sort of what i mean. You felt for him in those times that i hear you he was very strong on the campaign trail and thats why he went great. Lou something happen before donald trump spoke to the audience and that is donald trump was there to greet ted cruz after that famous speech in which was an act of political selfdestruction. It was also at the trail of donald trump who would have been given to believe Something Else would happen, something far more positive for him. Donald trump squared his shoulders, walked out and had no problem at all. It is the way this man has conducted himself throughout that gives everyone such hope and perhaps his white house may be because my expectations are so high that they want me to diminish my expectations. And millions of otrs that we are not going to do that. Trish no, absolutely not. Everyone has high hopes right now and anytime there is a change in administration there something about it and i think lou you and i are very fortunate to have the job we do and we are out there on the front lines of history and what we saw today in regardless of parties here and id know how much you support donald trump but regardless of all of that is what a wonderful tradition. Its one of the things that takes our country so great. Before that you go, he talked about restoring faith. He said we need to restore our wealth and we need to restore our dreams and i really thought that was a very important thing to say right now because the country has been feeling rather down, lou. Lou they have and certainly not in all corners and all people. So many millions of people who have been victimized i just rampant thoughtless and indifferent globalism on the part of beliefs of both parties. This will be written about in the decades to come as a time of indifference toward americans by americans and we can never let that happen again. He has spoken of dreams often on the campaign trail as you know trish and a lot of people said thats right i quit dreaming. I havent had those ideas in those dreams in a not only wants us to dream, he wants us to dream big. We are once again a nation that is unto itself exceptional and its okay to regard our values as demanding greater excellenceg certain that we leave Something Better behind and greater hopes in greater dreams for our children and our grandchildren and this is a generation that we continue down the path we were on a would have denied those dreams to all americans. This has not been hninghee this is a nonviolent protest, with nonviolent protesters and certainly people are in tighter tighter entitled to their opinions and entitled to get out your protest and thats what they are doing. He called them out and said if you need federal help, ask for it and ill give it to you. But you cannot let the people of your community die like you have the last several years. The police have done a great job in terms of keeping the peace through all this. In this particular case this young lady says they didnt. But all is calm here at the moment. More of a Police Presence than we have seen throughout the night. Protesters have been let go to do their thing. Its a bit of a poignant reminder. There is a big chunk of this country that does not support the current administration. We need to move forward from here, and the reality is america has spoken. Americans did vote hip into office. People keep talking about how divide we are as a country. And yes we did hear from some folk on the left that are very, very vocal, and you hear them in hollywood. You hear them in part of america and on the streets of america. But i want you to hear something. I want my next guest, charles hurt from the washington examiner. I want to show you this map. I want to remind you and all the viewers that as much as they say we are divide as a natio take a look at that. There is a lot of red out there. The reality, charlie, is americans did put donald trump in office. They put him in office for a reason. In some ways you think all the hysteria coming from the left when it comes to how much this is not my president , it cant be my president , they were horrified to see this day happen today. Are they just sort of a vocal minority or do you feel that the country is in a sense of fright. When you have 70 members of the house of representatives walk out and refuse to participate in the peaceful transfer of power from one president to the next, that amplifies that vocal minority in a way that is dangerous for the republic. Its dangerous for the people, and its just flat out unpatriotic especially considering the people that refused to take part in the inauguration are people who dedicated their lives allegedly fighting for voter rights and fighting for selfgovernance. All that goes out the window. I dont want to hear from any of these people ever again about how they care about the right of people to vote. As you said, we had an election. It was a fair and open election, and donald trump won. And they may not like the outcome of the election, well, that happens sometimes. There are plenty of elections i dont like the outcome. But it doesnt mean you dont acknowledge and accept the presidency. Trish its harmful for our country, its harmful for our democracy when they dont participate and honor the tradition that is today, and the fact that 70 democrats did that is very sad and perhaps very telling. Charlie, i can tell you not one of them have any kind of background in finesse. Theris such a thing as an option. They could have taken the option and said, well, you know, i had to do what was right. But these 70 people, i think they put themselves in a bad spot. Guess what, those 70 lawmakers will have to answer to people saying why didnt you just show up for a longtime tradition . If you look at the promises he laid out during the campaign, and promises he laid out during his address. They are not particularly republican promises or conservative promises. They are prop lift promises. Kind of things that will wind up appealing to to people across all parties. Another thing thats disturb being those 70 members. What a terrible example they set for children who are learning about this great country in which they were born, in which they live. Its an extraordinary country. It is an extraordinary republic we have inherited. When i look at these punks throwing rocks and burning things in the streets and getting into fights with cops. I would love it if we set up a system where judges could take courses about countries who dont have free and Fair Elections, or send them to countries that dont have free and Fair Elections and let them find out how bad it is there. We have been talking about how the u. S. Has been divided. The question is, and i brought this up earlier, talk about are we that divide . You look at this map right now. There is a whole sea of red which means there is a whole sea of donald trump support. You hear a lot from the protesters in other parts of the country today, including here in washington, d. C. You hear a lot from them. You hear a lot of the noise. You hear the noise from hollywood. But what about when you get out into the rest of the country . Are we as divided as hollywood would like to you believe . I dont believe so. Joining me, republican strategist ford connell. I get, 70 lawmakers choosing to skip what is a phenomenal tradition. A tradition that gives me goose bumps he time it happens. Thats their own business and potentially they may pay the price for that. But, ford, are we as divided as they want us to think . No. We are not. Donald trump won 31 states and 2,600 counties. I think the problem is donald trump is speaking to the American People. And those who feel forgotten by the elitist government of the last 8 years. He will come through the first 100 days like a sledgehammer. Trish toda what did you think,a democrat yourself, those 0 people who basically said we dont want to be there for the tradition today. I personally think it is wrong. I would tell my member of congress friend whom i know that i disagree with the decision they made today. I understand people have strong feeling, that they may not share the vision for the nation with now President Trump. But at the end of the day we have to rub that we are all americans. These members of congress are going to have to wake up tomorrow and work with President Trump. Thats no way to get this done. It start things off on the wrong foot. When i was minority leader at the ohio senate, i got blowback for attending governor kasichs inauguration. You better work with them. Hes got some authority. Regardless of whether we are democrats or republicans. This is about the office of the presidency and transition of which we are privileged as americans to have, and something a lot of countries around this world do not have. When people do this, it send the wrong message. Whether we are republicans or democrats, we have to put America First and have people understand this is how this works. You know what people are going to say. There are members of the left who will say they dont like that agenda. Wee they dont like the nationalism that it represents. We have heard members of the media keeping in find you have to work with the team thats in if you want to get anything done. How do you reconcile that. For them to be so angry. What is so wrong with that . I can tell you my former constituents in theio senate who voted for donald trump, even though my district was predominantly democratic said they had been waiting for some time. There is a way to put America First without sending a message of being divisive or not being inclusive. Putting America First can also mean being inclusive, lifting all boats economically and bringing people together. I really hope for the sake of this nation, there are a lot of thing i disagree with donald trump about. I dont want to be acrimonious on a day like today. This is about the nation, this is about President Trump. Tomorrow we need to come together and have a civil discussion about our disagreements on policy. You can guarantee you are not going to get anything done if you alienate people. If you have a civil kfg. Maybe what you get isnt perfect, but maybe its better than getting zero. Trish i think you are one of the few that has been calling on them to wake up. But ford a lot of them wouldnt. They will dig in their heels. They will day protesting and stay angry and they wont get anything done. Heres what im asking you. Is this an opportunity for your party, if donald trump is successful and he tart to get stuff done thats meaningful to people that puts money in their pockets that gives them a job and gives them away to take care of their families. I wonder, might he be able to bring in a whole new group of voters . And im talking about minority voters that have been disenfranchised by their leaders year after year after year with a lousy policy that keeps them dependent. To your point, success breed bandwagon jumping. In the first 100 days, if donald trump has to tell washington there is a new sheriff is in town, if he can get enough done through executive order or through congress that helps the average american person, it will open up peoples eyes. When donald trump is a success, america wins and people will give him a second chance. Trish if he can start to give the inner city better schools and provide a path to economic success, what would that mean for your party. I think he has an opportunity. And this is whats going to be interesting. I think it is going to be about performance the next four years. Donald trump may actually have more of a challenge getting his agenda through congress because of a divided Republican Party. He has an opportunity to work with democrats on the Transpacific Partnership and infrastructure and what the replacement for the Affordable Care act obamacare look like. If there is a way for democrats to say we Work Together on this. We want to be able to share in that success politically. Its also good politically for democrats and republicans. When you talk about infrastructure prongs, i have to think that some politicians will want to have their hand out for a little money. Dont go anywhere. Stay with me. I want to go to chicago. We have been watching protesters block Michigan Avenue. We are talking about noisy folks on the left. You ran into a few on the left yourself tonight. No question about that. They are in big numbers. I have gout if you have got me. This is Michigan Avenue. And this is the largest protest i have seen in chicago since i think its fair to say can you hear me okay . I gotcha. Reporter this is the largest protest i have seen in chicago. Trish how many would you estimate . Reporter i think its in the thousands. I would say in the thousands. This is Michigan Avenue completely blocked off with marchers. As much as you see there. You cant see up at the other end its the biggest protest i have seen in chicago since the day after thanksgiving, the black friday protest after the Laquan Mcdonald shooting. This is a big group of people. This is a democratic town. But there are a lot of people who didnt vote for donald trump. These are people, many of them potentially would be able to be won over. But there are a lot of people i dont thinkbe won over. There are a lot of people out there, ill tell you. It will be hard for him to change some preconceived notions. Someone said to me, success is being underestimated. Well keep checking in. Republican strategist. I think of the expectations that greeted president obama when he came to office. There was none of the protest in the street. There was none of the noise from hollywood. People went, everyone went to the inauguration. And yet being that the bar was so high, it might have made it incredibly difficult for him to live up to. I on contrast that with donald trump who as you explained, the bear is very high for donald trump. I think for those who voted for him, the bar is very high. For those of you in chicago tonight, was he pleasantly surprised . They could be pleasantly surprised. The expectations were way too high. I think what donald trump understands, if you can basically under sell and overdeliver you can turn a lot of head. If you listen to the average protester or average person on the left, they will tell you donald trump is the spawn of satan. If donald trump can get this economy moving he will turn a lot of head because a lot of people wont know where else to go. I dont know another man who has overcop the odd in politics like donald trump. But it will be important for him to get things done in that first 100 days. Its a mental marker of where the nation is head the next four years. Trish many members of the Democratic Party said there is on one president at a type. He was having a lot of meetings, meeting with ceos. They didnt like it. But this isnt a guy who is goingf to sit around and do nothing. You dont build a successful business lining that by sitting around and doing nothing. So hes a man of action. How is that impatience which i think is one of his strengths. How is that going to gel with how this town works . It will be hard. I think President Trump will get very frustrated. He may be able to do a lot through the executive branch and administrative agencies. Congress takes a long time to get things done, even when they take action for the federal fiscal year. The continuing resolutions because they cant make up their mind, they want to continue to pass the buck. Thats not going to fly i think for the trump administration. It will be interesting to see President Trump and his campaign broke the mold on everything. We all know about campaigns, those of us who have been in politics, or political observers. Now i think it will do the same for government. And it will be interesting to see. People elected donald trump because they wanted something different. They wanted to turn government on its head because they felt was not working. The question is, will it be a success . The number one thing you will have to do is change the mindset in washington before you change the mindset in america. Trish i have a feeling hes keeping that twitter account. Administration officials tell us it eases the burden on federal agencies and gets the ball rolling in determining whats the best way to move forward with repeal and replace of the healthcare law. We also saw the Vice President , mike pence. When we saw him earlier this evening, he was swearing in the new defense secretary, james mattis. Mattis was confirmed by the senate 981. I talked to some people who were camping in order to participate today. It was the most unusual crowd for a president ial inauguration. Just like this president will be the most unconventional. Guess whats going to happen . If they dont get on board and do what the people want, what worse place to be than on the other end of a negative tweet from President Trump. With that in mind, what do you anticipate on the military front . I think there will be a lot of nos before there will be yeses. I think he will take time and be circumspect about the thing that need to happen in this country. Americans have put a lot of faith in him. As i traveled the country during the campaign. He said the word radical islam. Im thrilled that he said it and i think that will be one of his real he real emphasis in the next three months. Trish certainly a robust tone. He has been robust in terms of the message hes giving to bunesses tmselves. On the one hand hes saying we want to make an environment that provide less in the way of regulations so we can grow our economy and we can be as great as we can be long you can be as great as you can be. But hes saying dont get any ideas about going to mexico for production or else 35 tar raf. I think the president is restoring patriotism to business. Which is important. Putting America First. Making sure america is taken care of. A Strong America helps to keep a more peaceful world. Donald trump is pragmatic and transagricultural. He will reach across the aisle and make deals. It doesnt come from washington and he said that today. Trish what do you mean by that . Does it mean ill check the labels on my clothes in the. Im going to think about buying an american instead a german car . We need to make trade deals that are not onesided. It feels only as good as it is for bought parties. America has gone the the short shrift on a lot of these deals. Many of them have brandnew in place for decade. And hes telling people, before you close a plant, before you move people away, think about america, think about your country before you do that. America is a great place to do business. It was wa it once was and weo that again. Trish we have some great people here and great opportunity that we can maximize. You think of the intellectual capital that we have here. You think about our workforce that we have here. The potential, ned, is incredible. It is incredible. I think to build off what brad said, one of the themes of trumps speech is America First. Its one of those things we dont have to apologize for who we are. We dont have to be ashamed of who we are. It has been in the recent era of the last administration we had our president going around and apologizing. Trump is not going to be apologizing for who we are. I think if trump can be successful with some of the jobs, the economy, trade issues, he can take us to better height. There has never been a reason to be ashamed and hes making it clear. We dont have to be ashamed. America first, america last. We can be proud of who we are because of what we have been able to accomplish and are going to accomplish in the future. Trish trish one of the things i was most struck by was his comment that he wanted to restore wealth and restore dreams. Wealth and dreams.
