Going to be such a low point we have a snoop around to catch a glimpse topping the discreet lockers of the secret structure june 10th w. This is due to be news live from berlin Angela Merkel insists her government will press on the german chancellor says shes not planning any changes to the countrys Governing Coalition this after the surprise resignation of the leader of the Social Democrats a move that plunged the Coalition Top night into crisis. Im rebecca ritters welcome to the Program German chancellor Angela Merkel says her Governing Coalition will press on with its work despite a surprise resignation today at the top of its ranks and reanalysis announced shes stepping down as leader of germanys Social Democrats the Junior Partner in merkels grand Coalition Says she also plans to give up her seat in the German Parliament the announcement comes as her party recognize agonizes excuse me over its future following a double election defeat now less was under pressure after german voters handed the Social Democrats a worst ever result in last election in last months european elections this pay day also lost a regional lection in the state of braman for the 1st time in over 70 years. Has released a Written Statement about her decision she said discussions in the parliamentary group and fav back from the party have shown that i no longer have the necessary support to carry out my duties on monday i will therefore resign as chair of the s. P. D. And on tuesday i will resign as chair of the s. P. D. Parliamentary group. Chancellor Angela Merkel delivered her response to on grant alices resignation a short while ago lets take a listen to what she had to say. You know who can talk my good afternoon ladies and gentleman. And malice has made a very significant decision today both for herself personally and for the social Democratic Party of germany and i think i would like to express the respect i feel for the decision and to be honest as you made i worked together with her for many years both as a journalist of labor and social affairs and also show Democrats Party leader Parliamentary Group leader i always worked with her on the basis of trust and everything she said was completely reliable. She is a Social Democrat through and through that can certainly be said but i also think shes a decent person. For dinner and of course i respect the decision you know that the social Democratic Party will have to make in terms of a successor for under the analysis but despite that i would like to speak on behalf of the government i am say that we will press on me with the work of governing this country with all of the seriousness that this job entails and with a great awareness of the responsibility ribera because the issues we need to address are clear. Both in the federal public and germany here at home and in europe and in the world if you look at the situation generally and in this spirit we will continue to do our work thank you very much. And for more analysis im joined by d. W. Correspondent whos outside the Social Democrats headquarters in berlin and dana chief Political Editor michelle occur from is now parliamentary studio we had ill start with you we just heard chancellor merkels comments there what can we take from what she said. You know i was in the room when all of those statements were made with the conservative c. D. U. Today and i think the clear message there is that this is simply not the time to have a government crisis america mentioned europe so did her successor see do you party to im going to come qanbar and the European Union just had an election its deciding its key stuff to take it to the next couple of years its key own leadership simply this is not the time for germany not to be stable and stability is the word that was mentioned quite a few times on the conservative side a determination to continue with this socalled Grand Coalition between the c. D. U. Party younger Americans Party and the Social Democrats if there wasnt this yet again leadership crisis within the s. P. D. We mentioned the party leader the c. D. U. Party leader that is a great karen bauer she also reacted to his resignation lets take a short listen working on the assumption that the Social Democrats will quickly make personnel of related decisions and ensure that the Grand Coalition remains as capable of acting for the c. D. U. It remains clear that this is not a time for Party Tactics we remain committed to the Grand Coalition so both women theyre saying that they remain committed to the Grand Coalition with the Social Democrats is that coalition in serious trouble. It could be potentially because its simply not up to the conservative c. D. U. To decide at this very moment in time whether this coalition will continue the Social Democrats are yet again in another crisis we heard. Shes known here. Basically an expectation towards the s. P. D. To essentially get its act together to elect a new d. J. And then to continue in government and critics within the Social Democrats of this whole concept of yet again another socalled Grand Coalition with party which never really paid in at the ballot box for the Social Democrats in recent years they are saying that exact exactly the problem just simply soldiering on simply wont work for the s. P. D. They are in an essential crisis and the current government Angela Merkels self declared last term in Office German chancellor how long that will last is currently being discussed and decided in the s. P. D. Headquarters my ill just turn to you now i mean as mahela mentioned the crisis in the s. P. D. What will the Social Democrats now do are they likely to change course to try and win back voters. Well this is a big question that has to be answered in short order here by the s. P. D. Weve already heard them say that they need to take some time to actually decide what their next steps are going to do they have a couple of candidates in place 2 may or may not be the next actual leader of the party and some endorsements that have happened who the next person could be but this is a big question for them how exactly can they win back voters who have slipped away from them in least the last 2 elections as we had mentioned earlier and how exactly can they carve out some space for themselves in this political world that is increasingly polarized there are of voters were slipping away to parties like the lincoln the greens and also to the far right to the f. D. A. What exactly does it mean to be in a Political Center as the c. D. U. And the s. P. Do you have so often and so recently occupied antietam will a new party leader be able to smooth things out for the s. P. D. Well if they want to remain relevant theyre certainly going to have to try theyre going to have to smooth out not only tensions within the s. P. D. Itself but also with their s. P. D. Voters with the c. D. U. With their Coalition Partners with angloamerican all and with the german public in general this is really not a good look for them this was in power for a year about before she decided to step down and it doesnt really bode well for voters confidence that has already been shown to be weakening behind the s. P. D. Im back to you know what i mean would you say that this resignation from under analysis totally shaken up german politics i mean is it just a minor shot or or are we can we expect big things in the future and. Well it was a bit of a surprise that she would throw in the towel completely we all knew that she was on the press we also known for a very long time the future of the continuation of the Grand Coalition between the sister and the seed used by no means certain. Till 2021 so this can be seen as yet another indication that the stability of the German Government is not given and that we simply do not know what than what the next couple of days weeks and potentially months have in store for the Political Landscape what we do know is that those 2 big tent parties and the c. D. U. Are likely to suffer yet another slump by the voters at the ballot box when those Eastern States vote where the far right if he is expected to potentially become the Strongest Party in 2 of those states so theres more trouble in store and the big question now was strategically is this the right moment for the s. P. D. To have to switch everything to 0 and have the big soul searching out a shouldnt they just ride out yet another storm at the ballot box do later the summer as you say in this impacts the c. D. U. Greatly is their possibility of internal conflict over the next choice of the s. P. D. Later. Well we have seen a bit of internal wrangling in the past over how far to the center how far to the left jim johnson good merkel took the party and her days as c. D. U. Leadership for success i think theyve always certainly sounding a lot more conservative but if this crisis within the s. P. D. Is done anything it has united once again c. D. U. Leadership between its own leader and its come column ball in fact i hope one of the fiercest critics of the state. Has been so critical of those past couple of Days Stand Rock Solid behind so its a view certainly has that reflects in times of crises the Social Democrats to do it day to be chief Political Correspondent and correspondent thank you very much for that analysis. On for some more analysis im joined here in the studio with Political Correspondent kate brady kate hi thanks for joining me so most was supposed to put her leadership the leadership of the Parliamentary Group to a vote on tuesday why this sudden resignation i think this is a very clearly direct reaction to those Election Results that we saw just 7 days ago of course they were dismal results for the s. P. D. For the Social Democrats they walked away with just 15. 8 percent of the vote in the elections specifically in germany now of course thats quite a small figure for any party but that this is as we heard there from michigan at a mile this is one of the leading once upon a time at least now one of the leading parties in germany it was known as one of the centrist plus one of the big tent parties and is currently governing with merkels conservatives as well so those were huge losses but there has already been some criticism as well as a from within the Social Democrat ranks about how andrea not as was treated as the party leader after those Election Results were published with many saying that she. Didnt know so much that she was pushed but that there wasnt enough solidarity behind her as a leader but of course now weve seen shes taken that decision for herself and not only has she stood down as she will this coming week she will stand down as Parliamentary Group leader but also as the party leader of the Social Democrats i mean has there been any talk was she pushed or is that looking unlikely really her own decision it really was her decision in the end i think shes just taken this decision into her own hands and she said herself in a statement which she published earlier today that she wanted to ensure they ensure that it was a very orderly hand over because of course we have 2 very important positions here one thats the Parliamentary Group leader of the Social Democrats who takes care of things in the bundestag in parliament for that Parliamentary Group and also the Party Leaders are 2 very significant positions and that will really who actually replaces her now in those 2 different positions will really have a huge effect on how the Social Democrats move forward and if they have any chance at all of pushing through this revitalization of the party which theyve been trying so desperately to do since those last election the last National Elections here in germany but have so far failed to do so thats a big call for anybody who now has to feel under analysis shoes what does this mean for the Social Democrats weve seen in Progressive Lee losing losing losing and then as you say culminating in the european elections last weekend what now for them well those personnel crisis is one that is not only personnel in terms of whos actually holding those top jobs but its who do the Social Democrats want to be who do they want as the leaders and right now were looking at a very divided party much like many Social Democratic parties across europe as well you have many including for example some of the State Premiers in charge of some of the different states here in germany. Very much oppose leaving this Grand Coalition with Angela Merkel and going into the opposition but on the other hand you have some some of the members of the s. P. D. Some significant figures more on the left wing of the Social Democrats who are keen to put this socalled Grand Coalition behind them move into the opposition and give the party the time in the space to redevelop and redefine so that the party can actually decide who it is and then they can hopefully at least for the in the Social Democrats Point Of View win back those voters which theyve lost in recent years of course most recently in the e. U. Elections they lost more than a 1000000 voters to the greens and many more as well of previous s. P. D. Voters decided just to not vote its also not really doing much for mobilizing the german public either when it comes to voting quite an existence of a crisis as it were as we sort of seeing with many of the centrist parties what happens now of the Social Democrats were to say either pull out or decide not to
