[ music ] jennifer earlier today emotion came to the senate floor to ratified a treaty on the disabled. Its modeled on the landmark of merges withamericans. He claimed u. S. Sovereignty so the tea party is now in from its right flank. Its not just about the united nations. 24 hours an Speaker John Boehner put a budget offer on the table the tea party is threatening to throw him over board. What is his great plan . Raising revenuesaah. The details are pretty vague, but we know his plan would raise 800 billion in revenue closing some unnamed loopholes while sparing the top earners from any more taxes. Tea partyers object to raising any revenue at all. On the other side the president is not pleased with boehners plan because he said there would be no deal without higher tax rates for the wealthy. Obama if were going to raise revenues that are sufficient to balance with the very tough cuts that weve already made, and the further reforms and entitlements that im prepared to make, then were going to have to say the rates on the top 2 go up, and were not able to get a deal without it. Jennifer and jay carney piled on the g. O. P. Plan. We dont know who pays. We dont know what were talking about in terms of actual legislation to increase revenue. Its magic beans and fairy dust. Jennifer magic beans and fairy dust. Those are fighting wordsfrilly fairytale fighting words but still fighting words and boehner came back with a few verbal jabs of his own saying, quote, if the president really wants to avoid sending the economy over the fiscal cliff he has done nothing to demonstrate it. But even as the democrats pound him from the left, he is taking punches from the right. The leader of the rights rebellion is, of course, grover norquist. He said the president has installed himself at loyalty, and boehner is not being sufficiently revolutionary. He thinks someone made him king. He doesnt have the mandate that he thinks he does. I think he takes us over the cliff because he has got blinders on. He doesnt see where he stands in the universe. Jennifer or where he stands . Where the president stands . Hes leader of the free world for goodness sakes. But back to the tea Party Senator jim demint, who was riding first class on the tea party express, he tweeted that boehners propose is an 800 billion tax hike that will destroy jobs and allow politicians to spend even more. Not so fast, demint. There is yet another front in this revolution. Conservative columnist Jennifer Ruben dismissed demints rhetoric and says the votes of demimit t al are no votes. Oh please, smart and sensible conservatives should ignore the drivers of rightwing lunyie train and carry on. Others think theyre being punished for their votes. The committee chaired by boehner booted four top members were top spots who are known for bucking leadership. One of them, tim huelska mp told us what he thought. Its petty, its vin detective,vindictiveand if you have conservative thoughts, you will be punished. But take care, harry reid says he feels bad that you have a deal with the rapid members of the tea party. So for more on the story im joined by dan gross the Global Business editor are the daily beast, and joining us from politicos arlington virginias newsroom. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. Great to be here. Dan, let me begin with you. Maybe you can give us a feel of why exactly the Tea Party Republicans are upset with boehners proposal, specifically . They are still under the illusion that deficits can be reduced without getting more revenues. You saw thisthis has been there sort of article of faith for many years and it has been the republican orthodoxy back in 2011 when arguing with the debt ceiling and spending cuts and nothing about increased revenues, and boehner said he got 98 of what he wanted. When romney was running for office, there was not a peep until the end of the campaign. He was basically saying we could have a balanced budget amendment. We could cap spending and cut it. So their own colleagues have not told them these last many years that in order to reduce the deficit, you need more revenues, whether that comes from higher rates or higher taxes or getting rid of deductions. So when one of their own says it, its a shock to the system. Jennifer yes, for sure. Kerry, do you think that the tea party is going to be able to kill the plan before it gets started . You know, its really the struggle that is going on right now. The speaker put out this plan yesterday that clearly you know is a reversal from where he was at least publicly over the last year and a half, the endorsed revenues privately. You know, hes struggling with keeping his republican conference in line hes saying we need to do the 98 the tax locked in those rates for 98 of the americans, but he has a real issue with them and were seeing it with the conservative pundits right now and we have to see if that movement gains momentum. Thats the choice that the speaker has in terms of which way hes going to go. Will he find compromise that satisfies conservatives or does it give the president what he wants. Its hard to thread that needle. I dont think such a hole exists. It will come down for him trying to figure out which way hell go and have huge implications either way. Jennifer dan, to that point how risky is it for boehner to take on the tea party . Well look, he cant respond to obama by simply saying nothing or stomping his feet. So he did come back with a plan. He said this is not my idea. Im just cutting and pacing and pasting the stuff that he said. He said we could get 800 billion from limiting deductions or capping them, but he does not specify what they are. If you think there was people throwing a fit in washington today, wait until they come out and say this means getting rid of the mortgage deduction that people get on their mortgages or giving money to their church or university, thats where the money is in deductions. Thats something that a lot of people use and it has very powerful support in the country washington and the country at large. Jennifer if you do that by closing loopholes you still cant come up with enough money unless you basically eliminate them right . Right, and you know, its a few 100 billion perhaps. Again, i dont think its sort of asymmetrical warfare. The obamas put together a plan. If you jack up the rates on the top earners youll get more money, and more money will be withheld from their salaries and theyll owe more at the end of the year. By contrast if you talk about ways of eliminating deductions without saying which ones they are, that doesnt get you far. Thats been in the conversation for the la many years in washington. Jennifer carrie, you talked about a compromise. In a way to give the republicans a way of saving face, they might put forth a bill that the republicans vote present on. How likely is that . We did see that report yesterday, i think the Speaker Boehner really refuted that or. I think the plan at some point but its not the plan now. A lot of these stories, they will be corrected at some point in time, and we may get to that point defending how things play out over the next two weeks. It really is, as we look at december 17th, which is two weeks from yesterday and its a week before christmas and theres nothing happening we could see a plan like that gaining some ground. I think at this point even though things seem stalled and things are truly stalled congress has a lifetime in negotiations, even though theyre extraordinarily complex in washington, governor, things can move really quickly once you get a breakthrough. Jennifer and its all last minute. No one wants to cave too early. If they reveal it too early people will be lobbied intensively. My suspicion is if there comes a deal it will come late. Do you think were going to go over the cliff carrie . I bet that they will come to some sort of agreement beforehand just because its just my hunch at this point. Things only happen, as you said, in the last minute and it will be hard to see it go past that. Jennifer dan . I think there is still a relatively high chance that we will go over the cliff. As you said these negotiations can come together very quickly at the last minute. But boehners record going back to 2008 when he could not sell the tarp to his caucus and it failed on its first vote, he has not shown an ability to get his own people to agree to anything that the president will sign. Nobody better epitomizes the tea party than him and because he says so many crazy things hell give the group a lot of free press. Soon to be former congressman joe walsh would be a good replacement for dick army, and last but not least another guy who deserves consideration Richard Mourdock who said pregnancy from rape is quote something that god intended. Coming up, to discuss the problem with the tea party is andy croll. Welcome back inside the war room, andy. What isgood to be back. What is behind the departure when he was the face and voice of it. Dick army was the father figure of Freedom Works. He is keeping his cards close to the vest about the exact reasons for his de departure. He does not like the direction that Freedom Works is taking going forward. Jennifer really . Yeah, he does not believe that Freedom Works is doing what it need to be doing to benefit and growing the conservative movement. He doesnt like where the leadership has taken the group and he has agreed to lucratively part ways with the organization that he really put on the map and he really made famous. Jennifer 8 Million Contract how can he be walking away from that . Im interested in the disagreement. Its not a personality conflict but a disagreement. Do you imagine that Freedom Works is too far to the right . They should be going. [ farting sounds ] to should it be farther to the right . What do conservatives need to do to take back the white house to grow their ranks to take back the senate, and really to get the momentum going again. On the one hand you have died in the wool conservatives. Some of the folks who are still at Freedom Works saying that we need to double down, we need to rei am brace the true conservative believes that we have. And then you have folks potentially dick army, who are more moderate on Immigration Reform saying look, we are dead as a party if we do not reach out and support comprehensive reform. We have seen departures from high level staffers in the wake of armys departure what is playing out is perhaps what is playing out in the conservative movement and the Republican Party. Jennifer wow fascinating. Do you think armys departure may be signaling that theyre losing some of their steam or is it a recalibration . It is a recalibration of sorts. The Republican Party has been losing its steam since the 2010 elections which was the high watermark for the party. You may say the debt ceiling fight when the tea party prevented a deal from happening. They managed to reelect a decent amount of Tea Party Members but they knocked off alan weathers, walsh, and mack in florida. This is perhaps a symptom of the tea partys diminishing influence, but its also an identity struggle, and how do they stay meaningful. Jennifer who decides who replaces dick army, is that that a Koch Brothers decision . I think what you will see Board Members there who are rich conservative donors, movers and shakers that individually is paying dick armys 8 million parachute which is worth noting. They are the folks who will decide who will replace dick army. Jennifer who is that . A fellow named stevenson he runs Cancer Centers of america around the country. He is on the Freedom Works board. Another influential person, these are the types of folks who are going to pick armys successor. Its a big decision. Army was the face of Freedom Works and an essential face in the tea party. Jennifer i nominated three people who i think will be great dereplacements, but they are all people who lost, and i dont know if Freedom Works wants to be painted as a place where tea partyers go to die. They may pick someone else. Do you think its likely that the president and ceo of Freedom Works matt kibby takes on a larger role. Matt kibby could take on a bigger role. He is a known quantity in the tea party movement. A figure that looms large. Dick army brought to that role a history in the congress, House Majority leader. He helped to write and promote the contract with america the mid 90s republican manifesto if you will, or connie mack in florida or some conservative figure who has had time in the government does have those connections. But also has another foot in the conservative movement, and has those conservative bona fides which dick army did which made him so appealing as head of that organization. Jennifer so many fascinateing developments on the far right. Its a good day to be a democrat. Thats andy kroll. Thank you so much for coming on the war room. Then Patrick Murphy came and sent him alright, in 15 minutes were going to do the young turks. I think the number one thing that viewers like about the young turks is that were honest. They know that im not bsing them with some hidden agenda, actually supporting one party or the other. When the democrats are wrong, they know that im going to be the first one to call them out. They can question whether im right, but i think that the audience gets that this guy, to the best of his ability, is trying to look out for us. Jennifer back inside the war room. So while i might mess miss allen west im thrilled, thrilled political newcomer Patrick Murphy is taking his place in congress. The contest between allen west and Patrick Murphy was one of the closest races less than 2,000 votes separated these two guys and allen west raised 17 million, compared to Patrick Murphys 4 million. Well tonight im so pleased to be able to welcome congressman elect Patrick Murphy of floridas 18 district back inside the war room. So good to have you back. Thank you governor, its an honor to be here. Jennifer all right, so i made a little confession. I want to you make a confession, too. Youre really probably going to be boring compared to allen west arent you . Unfortunately, i think youre right. He sure did light up the airwaves. Weve had interviews with some of the local press and they said patrick were glad you run, but he did sell a lot of newspapers. Jennifer yes, did he. I dont know if you want to take on that kind of attention any way. The district probably welcomes boring and competent. What does it say to you about the districts and maybe the mood out there that despite being outspent 41 that you were able to beat the guy who is a poster child of the tea party. Money cant buy elections. Thats huge. This election sent a message to the country that despite all the money and negativity in this race we prevailed. The voters saw through it. Beyond that i think this send a message to the congress and really everybody in the country that the tea party is dying. They want to get things done, the my way or the highway mentality is not what voters want. It did not move our country forward. Im happy to represent the 18th district in florida and im looking forward to going to washington, d. C. Jennifer what you described is an interesting juxtaposition that is happening in d. C. Right now, the fiscal cliff and the rights and the soul of the Republican Party. Im wondering how you feel whether they resolve it before you come to town . I know you want to avert a crisis, but at the same time deep down do you wish you had a chance to be part that have particular vote . Look, for the sake of our country, i hope this is resolved before i get there. You know, ive been talking to Business Owners throughout the corinth for months now. They want certainty predictability from our government. They realize that our taxes are going to be up a little bit. They know there is going to reform to Social Security and medicare, they want to know so they know how to plan for their companies. I hope its resolved before i get there if not so be it, i see this as an opportunity for america to lead the way. China is slowing down. India is slowing down. Europe is in a recession. South america is slowing down. We have an opportunity to lead out of this mess. I hope we take the lead. Jennifer Everyone Wants to prevent going over over the cliff you still will have a lot of issues on how best to lead the country forward. Allen west will be gone but there will be tea partyers remain. How do you work with people who think compromise is a bad word . Look, i was just earlier with the republican part of my district today and met with a lot of republican commissioners. The message i told them is what i told everybody. Whether youre a republican, democrat, i have an open door. I want to hear your thoughts, your concerns and i want to be your voice in washington, d. C. I plan to represent 100 of this district and being a passionate voice for everybody. I hope i can sit down with everybody in d. C. And whether republican democrat, tea party or not. I want to hear their point of view. I imagine theyll disagree, but i hope this race in particular my defeat of allen west will send a signal and maybe a warning shot over their bo bow that things are changing. Jennifer for those of us who have not been inside the orientation, how did that go . What do they do to orient new members of congress . They get all the new freshman members of congress, republican and democrat, and they put us in a lot of sort of halls, a lot of meetings withyou go overrules regulation ethics, and Committee Assignments that sort of thing what to expect, common mistakes by freshman, loose of this backoffice stuff. I wish it was more policy driven but you have to learn the rules first. Jennifer you have to know where the bathrooms are before you get start. Exactly. Jennifer the house has not made Committee Assignments yet have you gotten assignment yet probably. What committee do you hope to be on . I hope to be on financial services. The reason for that, my background is a cpa. Also what is going to be done in thecongress will have to do with services. My district is no different. Were really hit very hard by the housing crisis, and i want to be in a position to help out my district. Jennifer hes totally right by that, by the way. President obama reiterated that hes on board with entitlement reform and cuts but the republicans have to budge on tax rates for the wealthy. Harry reid had this for the republicans. I sympathize sympathize with john boehner. The tea party has a firm grip on the Republican Party. We are not going to twist ourselves into contortions to please a vocal minority of the tea party. Jennifer thats fascinating a new approach for harry reid feeling sorry for john boehner. How should democrats be handling this Tea Party Revolt . Should they do more to assist Speaker Boehner . We should be throwing gas on the fire. This is an emporer with no clothes. When we were pushed to fiscal cliff it was because john boehner promised something to the president and could not get members of his caucus do the right thing for the American People. I dont think we should be putting more gas on the karl what youre saying when your enemy is committing suicide, dont step in and interrupt . Jennifer break out the popcorn and sit back and watch the fight. A right on right fight. Theyre the ones who are responsible. Dont blame us. What you risk about allowing them to fight with each other is going over the fiscal cliff and plunging us into another recession. When i say put gas on the fire, we cannot sit here and wait for them to selfdestruct. It does not get the job done in washington. What gets the job in washington is standing up loud and proud and look at what theyre doing to us. If we dont do that, we will squander another opportunity to show the American People that democrats are doing what is right for the working class in this country, and republicans are standing in the way to protect the tax cuts and thats the democrats job here. Its to look like theyre being responsible adults and putting Real Solutions on the table. Theyre doing this. Jennifer fact, there was a Washington Post poll that was released today that shows 53 of americans believe republicans in congress would be to blame if an agreement is not reached by january 1st. 27 only, half say president obama would be to blame. Using that to their advantage and being the responsible adults is not just stepping back, but pointing out what is obvious. We do have to solve the problem. Whether republican or Something Else we do have to solve the problems. Lets not step in and solve their problem for them. The problem that the democrats and the president and are ultimately responsible for is the fiscal cliff. Jennifer karl, is the fiscal cliff a Republican Party . Its a problem for us, but the political side, isnt it really a problem for them . Its a huge problem not just in the immediate where we are right now sense of the word. Im surprised when they showed them to blame i guess in the halls of congress the republicans said yes were ahead in the poll. This boiled down to their fading power with their fading demographics in the country and the demographics that look poorly on them. Acting as spoiled children that hold this country ransom does not help them with any of the demographics that reelected this house, increased the number of democrats in the house or the senate. The tea party might say we won one and we lost one. We won 2010. We lost 2012 because we were too moderate. We had a meally mouth nominee i believetheyre in a position if they act like real conservatives, real nut jobs, then were proven right. Theyre blinded by their own ideology. Im not surprised that a party who does not believe in evolution has only a memory that goes back to 2010. We might have to remember further back and this would be threeforfour for democrats of late with this president and the current body of congress. Jennifer i want to get to the end game, though, which is always my want. I want to figure out how theyre going to resolve it. Going over the cliff is one way to resolve it, but short of that if we assume that the deal with be put together at the 11th hour, the deal itself, some people are saying would be that you put a bill forward in the house that democrats will vote for, and that republicans will only vote present on. Its a way to give them an ability to save face. Do you think that is one of the ways. Thats as fun as kissing your sister. Jennifer well, at least its a kiss. Oh my goodness. Jennifer on the cheek, on the cheek. Hey look, the American People want some leadership and bipartisan leadership and solutions. Saying im here but i dont have an opinion does not help the Republican Party. Jennifer or does it help in the tax increase. Karl well get back after the break. Or plus there is a lot of speculation about anna windpower vogue editor will bring a new jennifer when it comes to secretary of state Hillary Clinton there is no shortage of speculation or what is next for her career. A lot of democrats are hoping to see her make a president ial run in 2016, but it seems new york mayor Michael Bloomberg has a different idea. Bloomberg called clinton and urged her to run for his job in in 2013 after she completes her tenure as secretary of state. Should the big apple be secretary clintons next gig . Might be there a job for her there in four years. Here after the moves of general petraeus we have karl frisch and donnie fowler. Mayor clinton. Mayor chelsey clinton. Jennifer you think Hillary Clinton would be interested in being mayor . No, as great as new york is, i think it would feel like a demotioning to from traveling the world as secretary of state to dining the fine restaurant of new york. I think theyll vote in quinn. Jennifer karl, let me follow up with you. There is a new york democrat nate shinigoa who lost his race, but he received a letter from Hillary Clinton, and he posted it on his facebook. And shes in fact in that letter encouraging him to keep on fighting in the political website, saying that is new for clinton. Do you think shes Building Support for a president ial campaign . I dont think shes Building Support to go on a nice long vacation. Jennifer i totally agree. Which is probably what shes going to do, take a break while her team puts everything together. Its smart politics congratulating, and offering condolences to anyone who lost. I think its pretty normal. I think its usual that a candidate would put it up for the world to see but i think its a smart thing for her to do whether or not she wants to run for president. Jennifer honestly, to me more than the other tea leaves out there that to me today was the biggest sign that she is open keeping options open. Jennifer absolutely. You dont send outsend out congratulations or condolence people to lost much less than im sure she sent them out to those who won. Who knows who andrew cuomo is the candidates have to spend the next year or two introducing themselves. As karl said she is going on vacation and have people write letters. She doesnt have to do the leg work that other democrats have to do. Jennifer she wants it has it if she she wants it, and she may be considering that machine. There is another interesting story about woodward oring that ayles encouraged general petraeus to run for president. Does that surprise you . I feel like the home alone kid. Im so surprised ailes encouraging him for president. No, this fits perfectly. They have said that the president of the United States is a communist fascist socialist, cartoonist pianist, and anything they can attach to him, unamerican apologizing for america leader. What did they do . What is the exact opposite of that, a fourstar American Military general. Lets get him to run for president against fascist unamerican barack obama. That makes sense. I wish people would put this case to rest. It has been proven without a shadow of a doubt that news is not a news agency. What . Jennifer were shocked. What .
