For 437 days not only has ukraine shown that we are capable of defending our homes or loved ones or freedom in our democracy that we will never give up and we will stay the course and defend our country but also how responsible we are and how we fight this war according to the Old International rules and how we are very responsible that even defending our country we are doing. Again whatever it is, is it a way for them to explain why there raids will not be held or whoever did that you know we should stay focused on the fact that there is war. People should know every year if they celebrate the victory over the in germany and this will be a difficult year for them in a lot of ways which gets to the second thing. Your country is under attack from the russian army but also something called the bogner group which is called a mercenary army and is not hired by just anybody tired for putin but its two separate. The head of the bogner group theres a telegram video of him and youve shown it to me and ive seen it. Extraordinary we havent seen this. Behind him are corpses, his troops dead on the battlefield, very bloody and he is railing against sergey the defense minister saying im going to pull my troops because you wont give me the ammunition i need to fight the ukranians. This is really an extraordinary thing. You can imagine the u. S. If two generals went after each other in the u. S. Army on the record like that. Im interested in your thoughts on this. Its extraordinary. Again during this very difficult time when russia reinvaded ukraine because they started the war with us that during this 15 months of this war the armed forces and the bogner group and other groups would which call themselves mercenaries. Of course they are there because the russian government to russian president told them to be there and they have always been bragging about how they will take mahmoud and their fight in the east has been particularly ridel in to see him publicly on the record wage the war and ukraine is actually saying the truth first of all the fact that they are running out of ammunition. So it means the sanctions are working and it also means there is an opening for us to continue what we have to do to liberate this country. How shall we enter but but thisd how shall wel look at this and how should ukranians look at this . The proves the allies sending weapons to us and more financial for us to be able to keep her land the sanctions to russia. This is what we should be thinking about. We have thed double down becaue we can win it faster. I think we should see more of it because again lets not underestimate. All our soldiers men and women who defend our home theres a very clear motivation there. We will defend it with everything we have. Its an aggressive unfair war and in ukraine there is none. Would i be wrong to think of this war is ukraines war of independence . Yes. Would i be wrong or would i be right . You would be right. Its very much our war for independence and for our territorial integrity. Actually for our right to exist because if you listen to putin and everyone from russia and they have been very clear about their objective essentially since we becamee independent in 1991. All the countries that became independent were occupied by the soviet union and other countries they have always seen the breakup of theie soviet union is something that generations of ukranians, something we never wanted to be part of an russia is the only country where consistently the message from ntrussian leaders has been this could lead to tragedy and they always wanted to reconstruct it goes deeper than thent soviet union because when you listen to them you clearly hear the soviet union or the Russian Federation is something they want to expand and return all the individual countries that they were able to occupy. For us that fight for independence never stops. In 1918 we were successful. We became independent together with finland by the way and the russian people and became independent. We fought for it even after that world war ii was people in ukraine fought for independence all the way up until 1989. And in 1991 we did all the Institutional Reforms and russia try to change it. There were two revolutions we had one in 2004 and in 2014. The reason for that was both times before the revolution russia was able to install pro russian either government officials who wanted to return to russian integration and occupation rather than european integration. People of ukraine repeatedly said no. There was nothing else we could do. Its all about that. Its all about freedom and independence. Im sure youve thought a lot about who putin what he believes and its my pet. Ive been following russia for more than halflf a century. He sees himself as bizarre and its bazaars duty to restore the russian empire and bring all of russia back together. The empire under the czar is mission as part of his life it means russia but it means belarus which is essentially a state that has little room to navigate. He can say maybe instead of know sometimes. But he would like to finland and the baltics and kazakhstan in central l asia. It was a rebranding of russia. I think thats what he sees himself as doing is to restore the russian empire because he is the czar. Is that the way you see at . I think thats probably part of it. Unfortunately he is not a czar. The kgb operative and today is not the 19th century. So the world is different. The ideas that could be successfulul in 21st century is not and we see it in the development of the nation with the cooperation that we have between ourselves and with the freedom of the press and social media and everyone having access to this and they are able to record a show how can you. Something that is so outdated and was not even feasible in the beginning of the 20th century. Im going to quibble with you because i do think putin and his closest allies xi jinping and ali khamenei are also best there is a chinese empire and xi zhangs paying xi jinping is part of the empire. These are empires of the 21st century and whether they succeed or not that question is very much out. I think its important to me the case and you have that ukraine is a separate nation from russia and has a right to be a separate nation from russia and maybe talk about that for a minute. Of course. We existed before russia. If we have more time he should do a conversation on the actual history. Its in the center of european history and theres a lot to discuss. In so many centuriescu i datingk to 22,000 years ago when we christianity in ukraine but you know we have a separate language. We identify ourselves as ukranians and we always look at ourselves as the different people. We are a separate people and by the way the difference between russia and ukraine is like spanish and french. It also has a due to the long traditional and ukraine. I say ukranians are free and expression and opinions and there are ukrainian jokes. We like to discuss everything and you see it in our relations with the government of ukraine. People are not afraid to voice. People are going to be elections electing their government as it happened in 2004 when they tried to steal the elections. If we are different. An apologist i would say for putin and people i would call isolationist and they may call themselves restrained. Nader was getting close to its borders because of ukraine had been accepted into nato but there was talk that would and he felt that was threatening to russia to have nato so close to his borders with nato expanding. Since 2004 at was very clear to us that the situation is very black and white. Youti are either occupied by r occupied byy russia. We were still natural and we will neutral in our institution and we. Would not with nato. When we were not part of nato putin attacked george in 2008 at texas in 2014 and reinvaded us in 2022 but we always formalized to say our desire to join nato concluded it into our institution. Ns more than 60 of ukrainians are in favor of this now. Before that the corporate and the key became a party of nato. That will actually happened after russia attacked us. And look at finland. Look at finland. The push for their people to join nato came as a response from russia. Its actually vice versa. Theree is Something Else that does scare him. Hehe sees people being free ande sees people voting. What struck me as an election observer is the extent to which ukrainians were very proud. We are doing this and we are doing it right and by the way there were pro russian parties in that election the 13 of the vote and i talk to people from both parties. Some of them said dont poke the bear. Pope people could vote freely. Putin saw that as a threat. This isis a threat because ts is a bad example for his people. People are talking about a spring offensive and in there could be asu summer offensive ad the spring is muddy and ukraine right now. Theres only so much you can probably tell us and people are making predictions including a number of people who we think a lot of ben hodges for example the general he thinks there could be some serious successes in this and mark milley talked about ukraine has significantly enhanced capabilities and defensive operations. Tell us what he canfe tell us about planning and what you hope to achieve because its important the world the United States americans see ukrainians making progress and thats important. If they see a stalemate you know what they will say we have to push for negotiations because this is like world war i over again. First of all russia attacked our land. They have committed crimes and atrocities everywhere and after we were able to liberate kyiv and care some we saw what happened in the territories where russians occupy. They were killing people and torturing people and people and killing our children and taking them to russia. Fu the scale and they are simply destroying the city. There were recent videos and google shots that i obtained. More than 90 of the city is destroyed so for us its not a question of when the counteroffensive for how many but the overall goal is to defend their country and to liberate ukraine with internationally recognized border. With your 88 days or months or weeks or years it doesnt matter for us. The goal is very clear to save as many ukrainians as we can. That goal since 2014 we have been because after the country was robbed by russia and the russian government in 2013 after their forces were completely destroyed by the Russian Ministry of defense and the secret service was severely damaged by the russian nationals to let the secret service. When they attacked us the first time in 2013 it came at a time when it was very difficult for us to fight back the way we shouldgh have. And the way we have done in 2022. Right now and we eight years and people sometimes forget we eight years working on a diplomatic solution to restore a territory. We tried to implement them in order to get back our country by means of diplomacy. Its very clear to us now that there is no alternative to us fighting for every inch of our territory and for everyy ukrainian. During these 436 days we have seen a couple of complex and successful ones. We did not allow russia to take over kyiv. We liberated the movement weight liberated kherson. One of the few that they were able to occupy during this time. Of course right now everyone is focusing on the. Again we trust our military command. Everyone from the supreme command in chief commander and others they know when and where we will do it in the most effective way and fighting on our territory. The way the military is running the operations come if you look at how we were liberating in tears on dear son they were doing c it in the careful way to save the civilians because its our people essentially. I can understand we all for all of our counteroffensive to be successful and i can only say we still need more weapons. This is the Main Objective now regardless of when of how many counter offenses we will have we also need to build for the future. After we liberate all these things and we believe we will its not only endangering ukraine but it endangers all of us. We have to clearly show its not okay in the 21st century to violate other countries are brutal force. After we do that russia will not movewi anywhere. It will steve still be on our border and they will still be a threat to not only the democratic world because theres food sick insecurity and Energy Insecurity so right now we are one of the largest and most capable armies in europe. We are liberating ourselves but we are dependent on other European Countries and we will continue. Hopefully in the future as a member of tomato. Simply agree with this and under john hardy in a group of military analysts we have a new report out. It specifies what we think based on her now says you need to prevail and i committed to everybody whos listening. You mentioned diplomacy. There are a number of commentators and analysts on the left and the right and in the u. S. And europe can we keep saying we have to push both sides to negotiate. Im just and how you can push ukrainians to negotiate but what i dont understand is how do you push putin to negotiate . Do you threatenedegte him with sanctions . We are doing that. Do you threaten them with weapons . We are are doing that. Putin thinks okay i want to negotiate and i want to compromise and find a way to end this. Is there any indication that he is in any way open to what people like to call a diplomatic solution . First of all you can only negotiate if both sides are ready to negotiate. Russia never wanted to negotiate. They wanted to occupy occupy attack and destroy us. We are not in a position to negotiate until they leave our country. Second you can only negotiate around the table what you can achieve on the battlefield. They will only negotiate with us if we are winning everything and liberating all of our territory great until then i dont think we should expect russia to negotiate. When russia talks about negotiations what they mean is operational. So they want to pause in order to get their resources together. Why would we give them their military objectives and if you have any people who study wars they are always three elements of that. The intent, the window of opportunity to capabilities in order to be able to complete it. Russia didnt change. It was there since putin became the president and to occupy and destroy us and they still want to occupy us and kill us and everything they are doing all the war crimes is genocide of the ukrainian people. The window off opportunity they had it in 2022. Theyey still think they can do. They can outlast us and they can outlast the west and they are trying to drive us away through whatever means possible so they think because they can endure more or they have more weapons and people are less active and will w be able to demonstrate tt they can do that. Again i dont think we can change that. The influence we can all have as a cape capability to fight and thats why more weapons to us and more sanctions to russia is the greatest tool in a in order to win peace faster. Recently had a conversation with xi jinping and he said it was a long and meaningful conversation. Its kind of hard for you to answer that if you want to be diplomatic i think xi jinping is saying whats in my interest . Hes thinking what is in the interest of china right now . Do you think hes going to be helpful inin any way or is it impossible to stay . Its very easy for me to answer on what our president s this. S in he has been very clear and you have seen it detailed readout that our administration put out. Very clear about what this war isis about that its russia that attacked us and there is a peace plan. Ukraines peace plan. President present zelensky his plan which he presented as early ass last october during the u. N. Discussions and a peace plan about how to restore peace and how to restore it and we are ready to cooperate with anyone whos ready to help us. We presented this peace formula and we said any countries that would work with us on all that you are welcome any countries to work on some of the steps, you are welcome so if china finds it and then to send a clear message to russia that what china publicly says they believe in mike victor territorial integrity russia has violated the u. N. Charter repeatedly. And the court last year mandated russia to stop this military operation and russia which is the Security Councilmember of the European Union of the u. N. Just ignored it to why they are members of the Security Council is . Another question and why the members of the u. N. Because they never went to the proper procedures. Another charge made by critics a of ukraine is there or neonazis within the military. Unfortunately they put massive resources into it at together with their cyber interventions everywhere together with their maligned influence through social media. It worked inin some areas. Again its the only instrument against that. We are so grateful to all the journalists who are in ukraine and who are on the frontlines and who arear in kyiv. We unfortunately lost so many. And National Journalist during this war. Its becausejo of them. Its them who shot and its them who attacked them and we could not save all the other ukrainians. There was one woman who died who survived the holocaust as a girl. She was nine and she saw her parents being killed. She lived to marry up a and she had to spend two years in the basement. She died in her mid90s from a russian attack. But we have to share the news and share the truth and explain and explain and explain aboutex this. The russians will have to fight their xenophobia, and xenophobia really is what it is. Say what i have many questions. Essentially the air defense and all of it from all the capabilities that integrate air defense. We understand how difficult it is to do it during an act of war. Again boarded and in 36 days ukranians have shown we can train and deploy in a creative way and we can do it. With that particular situation we saw what happened and its clear to us what russias trying to do. With regards to our Global Communication and cooperation with the u. S. Ico dont think we ever had that level of communication and trust and of course i will not go into details of what we share but we are very happy with the cooperation i think it will only increase. Is ukraine comfortable with the chinese playing this role and the question i have is do you think they are an honest broker and i think the special envoys even based in moscow. The main question is do you think they are an honest broker . First of all i think we dont need a broker. Nobody needs a broker for russia to get out of ukraine. There is a peace plan. The president zelensky peace plan and as we said we are ready for any country to work with us on all the steps are some of the steps and we would gladly meet with ambassadors and when they come when they come we will be very honest with them about the information what happened on the ground. And what is our objective here. Again i think right now the goal remains the same. Whoever can help us with this really help us to liberate the country of course we will work with them. You touched on this a bit but i wanted to ask specifically yesterday john kirby at the white house said ukraine hadoh received 98 of what it had requested for the purposes of this counteroffensive in the u. I guess given the things youve talked about the still need i wonder would you agree that youve received 90 of what youve asked for and 2 or whatever is the most urgent thing you havent received that you are still looking for . We have seen battles on a raid in kherson and we trust our military. Commanders and we just have to be prepared for any type of offensive are the actions of the russians. And as i said after we liberate our country need to continue with our capabilities in order to be able to stop any other attacks from russia in the future. Thats why when we are talking about our we are discussing a very l large capability that we need and i want to just go back and i think we are all focused on the war phase. President zelensky came to washington and we on that day signed a very important Framework Agreement thatme gives their banister of defense and the odd a fiveyear plan. There were a lot of areas in which we could Work Together in order to advance both of our countries to teach it objectives. Ukraine is not only important for ukraine to win now that all of us want its such an important element for security. Only in our region. Globally. I could go on and on in a number of areas. We are doing this as we speak and our courts are also hearingh this. Either we will capture prisoners of war allows us to do so. We are doing it in strict accordance. We have now more than 24 countries that have opened their own criminal investigation to on russian war crimes in ukraine and where corporate influence with them to provide evidence that they are asking for. Again can you imagine how much additional stress for the whole system in addition to other investigations so we are very glad that dozens of countries are doing this. We file their cases with all three were courts that are available to us. They court of justice and the court of european rights. Thats where mr. Putin and the deportation of ukrainian children have not only been investigated but theres an arrest warrant for them. So in that landscape the tribunal for we have in ukraine the crime of aggression but without the National Legislation we cannot proceed. We need this tribunal in order to prosecute. Not only was it done on the ground as a result of the fact that they decided they made this decision so this is way we are discussing and as you know they are a core group of countries that together with us have discussed it in this tribunal and we hope it will all end up an International Tribunal and well move ahead with it. Justice is a very important component and individual investigations which provided support support to our investigations and a lot of evidence collection and how do and its aew victims very difficult part. And how to do it and not to victimize because what people went through especially my home was under for 32 days but i can only imagine for those people for a year. Again if you look at president zelenskys peace formula its an element of new ideas and of course we are working on it actively and we have already a platform and International Platform of the g7 and i5 countries and a defense cooperation and Energy Platforms with the g7 countries and now we are starting to seek a coordinating platform on the future construction.
