Host this is the communicators on cspan and we are in las vegas for the annual Consumer Electronics Show International now known as ces international. And this is one of the exhibits here at samsung. There are literally thousands of exhibitors and thousands of people here at the Convention Center in las vegas. One of the things we decided to do this here in our coverage is talk with a reporter and actually follow a reporter around as he toured and see the ces through his eyes. Troy wolverton is that the San Jose Mercury news. Mr. Wolverton, how often have you been coming to ces . Guest i have probably been coming to ces for tenant seven of the last eight years and its important that its basically kind of a showcase foe Technology Industry. Its where many Major Companies come to show off their latest and greatest products and you get a sense of whats going to be on store shelves later in the year. You know its a place where consumers can get a glimpse of where things are going but there real import is this is is where the manufacturers try to sell to the retailers what they should have on their store shelves later. Host and whats the importance of the subtwo to the Technology Industry . Was the connection . Guest this mercury news is in the heart of Silicon Valley and our focus of of the business as one bin on technology and in fact its basically what we cover and technology. Im the personal technology for the mercury and i try to keep an eye on all things consumer technology. Host do you find that washington and Silicon Valley are on two different planets . [laughter] guest i think thats probably fair to say. You know i think the times are probably getting closer. There is more interaction these days than there was before but i think in many ways and for a long time folks in Silicon Valley didnt really care or want to know what was going on in washington and likewise i think those in washington have sometimes been tone deaf to whats going on in Silicon Valley with the Technology Industry. Host when you talk to Tech Companies in Silicon Valley, what do they say about washington . Guest oh gosh. [laughter] i think it depends on which companies you are talking about. I think in some cases Technology Executives want washington to stay the hell out and to keep hands off. In some cases Technology Companies want certain steps from government and they like to have more spectrum available for in some cases they want again for washington to not regulate so there is a was a big uproar over the legislation. Of things regarding whatever privacy or. It depends on the company and it depends on the issue. In some cases they want government to do more action in some cases they want the government to do less. Host Troy Wolverton give us a preview of the tour youre taken us on today. Guest i was hoping to go to number the big Technology Companies and Big Electronics companies i think we will stop by sony and we may start by sharp and ge and intel as well and get a flavor for these companies are showing off here. Host lets go. Its very striking how these companies. Lg and samsung and everybody else have really been 3d and nobody is mentioning at this year. Host we have designed this camera so we can start. It has an on the balance is fine no matter how you turn it it feels comfortable in your hand and you can feel the constant no matter how it is. That is great about the design with sony. It has a fiveinch display and that displays what we called mobile bravo engine two and we acquired it from sony television. To see that it powers all technology the same technology is in our mobile devices now. Its phenomenal. It has two gigs of ram and snapdragon so a powerful device. Lt of course. Is about on the market yet . Its not in the market yet but the availability will be announced sometime to come. Besides the camera there the highlights . One is my favorite is the one Touch Technology so with this phone with the Nfc Technology we are able to transfer content to another nfc enabled device by simply tapping it in that technology, we are calling that Technology One touch. I go to open and hit play and i want to get the music on my headset. Instead of connecting it to my wire cable i use my in able headset and i tap it. Its going to connect and its automatic so i dont have to go to the settings. It pairs and transfers directly. Does that work within the fc enabled device . Just sony products that we have other devices on the other side. I will simply take my music and tap it again and it will disconnect and come back to my phone. Samsung hasnt similar technology. It would work with samsung. We made it ours and our way and another thing with the one Touch Technology we took a step further. For example you are at home with the family and you have content you would like to display and it did screen tv. You pick up your nfc enabled tv remote and take your device, tap the remote and it automatically transfers the content to your tv. What we have here is one of two new sizes we have introduced for 2013. It makes it easier for folks to be in different rooms. We have been involved in 4k for quite a while. A majority of the cameras being used to capture 4k content are in fact sony and as a matter fact three out of four movie theaters currently used 4k projectorprojector s from sony so essentially people have been paying 12 to 15 to watch converted to get content at their local theater. We are uniquely positioned to offer technology to the enduser, and what we show over here is an example of four k. Content that is captured and this could essentially be you using your own 4k camera capturing the stuff and showing it on the screen. What sizes the screen and . This is 65 inches. 84, 65 and 55. Our 55 is right over there. When is it available . We are shooting for midtolate spring. No pricing has been announced yet. Any range . They will be competitive but no pricing has been announced yet. Okay. You said the idea is youll be able to get these down to a lower price because the first one started off at 25,000 . One of the things we are stressing here at the show is that the 4k television benefit is that everything looks great. That said because we own a movie studio we are leveraging that relationsrelations hip and leveraging the content that we have access to to deliver 4k content to users at home. Currently as we speak anyone who gets the 84 and television gets a video player. It comes preloaded with 10 full length four k. Moves including the amazing spiderman as well as independent movies and shorts in what we call eye candy, stuff like this. Its available to the user at no charge them. At some point in time the second half of the year we will efficiently unveil a video Delivery System or content Delivery System that will enable folks to have access to 4k content. Will that be direct did to the tv night netflix or a Video Service or as a Download Service currently folks who get the 84 and get the player and as an win four k. Content becomes available sony sends them of bluray data disk image transfer the content to their player. As to the mode of transport or the mode of distribution it is possible that could be streaming but that has not been announced yet. Is a bluray dvds as well . What we have are luray disks that were mastered and 4k. They were still 2k an apd that they were mastered 4k. I guess i misunderstood. He will offer 4k bluray dvd . We will offer 4k distribution service. What you can get today in a retail store is essentially a 2k bluray movie that may have been shot and or mastered and four k. In this tour of tour of sony what have you learned . Guest well their obvious that pushing 4k. Host what is 4k . Guest forte is a highresolution television. Is it high pixel . Guest right now on Hd Television is generally defined as one that has 1080p so what 1080p means is you have 1080 lines of resolution by about 2000 columns of resolution. On a four k. Tv you have double that so you have double the lines of resolution and you have double the columns of resolution so you get about 4000 columns of resolution on a four k. Tv. Its actually, the resolution because both sides are double the length and the columns you have four times the resolution of the regular television. So its useful on a bigscreen tv. Most experts would say its useful on a 60inch and above tv but below 60 inches you cant tell the difference. On a large tv particularly if you are sitting close to a large screen tv you can definitely tell the difference. Theres a display of the other side of this wall where they were demonstrating newspaper text on a screen and they were showing what it looks like on a 1080p a large screen tv and what it looks like on a four k. Tv, large screen tv. You can definitely tell the difference. Its much sharper and clearer on a 4k tv than it 1080p tv. The problem right now is for ktvss sar extraordinarily expensive. Sony came out with its first for ktv and they started off at 25,000 so theyre hoping to get those prices down and they probably will come down but we are still looking at the 4k version. The other problem is as we are talking about in a conversation there is no content out there. Sony is distributing this for ktv a hard drive that has 10 movies on it. I dont know about you but i watch a lot more than 10 movies in my regular viewing habits so you wont get your latest Television Shows in four k. And most certainly wont get the vast majority of the latest movies in 4k and just streaming Video Services arent coming in for k. And there is nothing out there in 4k right now. Sony is trying to help spur that along and a sterile talked about sony has a lot of the movie shop these days are shot in four k. And 1080 p. Resolution. They are hoping to kind of start moving the ball to get more out in 4k but its got to be a big process and frankly i have my doubts that they are going to put much out in in 4k unless theres a sizable market of consumers i will watch the content. Why would they take those expenses . There would be at considerable a considerable expense and distribute in 4k. That is kind of what they learned with 3d. 3d was the same push over the last several years and it turned out to be not terribly interesting interested in 3d. Theres not a lot of 3d content and consumers are not interested for k. Is going to be even worse because in the sense that its only the big sized television in and a market for big size television is 20 now its still a fraction of the total market. Host Troy Wolverton how do you few sony in the textwriter spare . Guest you know sony i think for a long time was considered to be the pinnacle of technology. They were the Diamond Company but they really have been knocked off in recent years. Sony was the dominant games monk on penny five years ago. Today they are in third place. If you look at music players player sonny was the dominant player and then i got knocked off by the ipod. They are not a huge player in smartphones. And its funny i would add the samsung conference yesterday had in many ways samsung has become the sony of the day. Samsung dominates a lot of the market including smart tones and thats thats something you mightve been able to say about sony five, 10 or 15 years ago that is not true today. Guest this is a brandnew system available out this spring, its called you again one of the interesting things about it is not only does it look like a full pc but it also use it like a tablet and then if i really want to use it like like a tablet i can take it and convert it into a full tablet mode. The keeper the keyboard turns out. Steichen rested on my lap and ive got my full access to my applications. Its a full pc. Just convert it back up and it goes back in the pc mode. I can turn it back on and type. The keyboard turns on whenever its 180 degrees right . The right, right. Whats great about this is you can put in something they called 10 mode where i can have it like this and you can see of the screen reconfigures. I will be watching a movie and with tablet to put them on your lap and you have to look down. This one you can pop up, pop and up on the bed next to you or if you want to show photos and things like that you have both full tablet interface propped up for you. So that is let nobody a gun that will be available later this year in the springtime. Thats going to be about an 800, 7 700 . It starts at 700. This one is designed for business so it will be available for all and i can have it as a full pc so i have a full keyboard with an intel processor for Key Performance and if i want to take it as a tablet i can remove it and its extremely light. Full pc performance. Everything is built right into this so built right into the so i have the great benefits. I have windows 8 etc. But also a tablet and then i can put it back together. Another interesting thing is i can put it in the opposite way so i can have it as a tablet facing out. When you do that you get it into the base. I can carry it around like this and its protected inside. The way this one works is it puts the battery between the screen so you get six hours out of the topic together gets 10 . Youre exactly right. Again when i am using it as a pc i get that battery from the base. Its built into the base. As well as then a full tablet as well. Okay. And this one is going to be what 1299 . The price hasnt been officially set by lenovo but its around that range. This should be available the end of next month. Okay. Here in the booth how many convertible signs are you showing of . We have 40 different convertible designs and over 140 different ultrabooks available in the market today. But not all of those convertible. That is correct. 140 and 40 will have touch capabilities in the convertible part we are selling about a dozen of those. Whether or not its a detachable design and there are some that twist and flip and some of bowled over so many types. About 40 that have touch capabilities among only a dozen that are convertible . Right, correct. One thing that is interesting happening in the marketplace today which is different from that pc market from other times as you have to look and see which is the best for your lifestyle. You really have a lot of twists now so maybe i think hey i really like this tablet usage and only occasionally would i be typing things. For that passes a great type of model for you. The other ones that you showed you were, hey maybe i do on a regular pc and only sometimes do i want to take it into a tablet type of mode. This may be the right type of designer or you have this fully detachable so i can take it as a tablet but also have it set up as a full pc. Lots of choices for consumers today. You just have to take a look at what is the right one for your lifestyle. What actually works best for you. Some of the same things we are seeing on the notebook side and portable side we are seeing on the desktop side too. Interesting things are happening on the desktop side. They are making desk top systems which are maven familiar with. Pc capabilities built into a drive type of screen so all you see is the screen and the keyboard and mouse. Not only do they have touch capability that they have capability to use portably so you are not always tethered to an outlet. They have a builtin battery. The battery only lasts a couple of hours but its designed for the usage where you can take it down and use it as a typical allinone pc or productivity etc. But then when i want to have fun with that i can take it around the house. If i want to watch a movie and set it up in a different room or what we are showing is a new take on family game night. They they have games built into , air hockey etc. That i can play with my whole family so i can bring in and put it on my Kitchen Table. You dont have to worry about losing the dice are all the Different Things. Everything is built into the pc. This is monopoly designed by by for hasbro. For hasbro, correct. What we are looking at is a system called lenovo so its a full windows pc. Again her standard windows 8 interface that you can use. It also has a builtin battery so if i want to make make it affordable i can take it around my house. I can take it over to my Kitchen Table and folded down. Its less than 20 pounds so its portable. Its not something you would take with you on vacation but its really designed for your house. What youll see here this is a multitouch display mode so i add my photos and videos. I also have access to games and i can show you the different various games you have. One of them is monopoly so if i want to play monopoly with the family i can have them put away their screens and we all gather around the table and look at this screen. Its really the exact same Monopoly Game that you know and love but electronically so a little bit more fun. Here we have the game and we are going to play. How long will the battery last . About a couple of hours so a full charge so designed where the portability aspect of it. Now we are ready to roll. The interesting thing here, here is my dice but because its touch i can shake the dice up and then it rolls and it will automatically move. And then it will ask me, do i want to buy . I landed on it and i say yes i would like to buy. This Monopoly Game that you know and love. Cannot put 500 in the free parking . Is the standard monopoly rules for this version. Thats how i play. Ive always played that way. Now its your turn. I forgot to shake the dice. So i get to be the iron. Thank god i am just visiting. Youre just visiting. I want to try shaking the dice. Electric company. Electric utilities i think are a good buy. Now its your turn. Its my turn. There you go. [inaudible] i dont have to worry about money floating around everywhere and all the different parts. Its all been electronically. You are going to buy virginia. Thats a good buy too. You mortgage all your properties. You can do everything you do with a normal Monopoly Game so yes, correct. Okay. This is almost like microsoft vision of the original surface tabletop computing at rit. That was more commercial type applications but this is an allinone pc. This is not designed to play games. This is one of the benefits but its designed to be your and family room. It has lots of Storage Space and you have a 27inch touchpad so allinone pc procould productivity apps and then you have the portability and youre able to play games with your family. Is this on the market . This will be available shortly. What is the price going to be . They havent announced have announced the price yet so details will be coming. This is running obviously on intel. What chip is this running . This is an intel four processors of stateoftheart processing. So again you get full pc full performance stateoftheart intel, all of it. Then i exit the game and it will take me back to the screen and i can go right back into windows display. You were talking and you guys have been talking about [inaudible] one of the things you are seeing here for consumers is changing the paradigm of the pc is using touch interface but what if we take a step further . What if your pc, you are interacting with it more like how we interact. We use hand gestures and we use our face so they have interesting things happening with a short mission. n part of our work under perceptual computing which is the name we put to title the names together. This is our new perceptual technology and the shows you how you interact with your system. This one is an interesting demo. This has a dual 3d camera. What this is showing is we are doing a videoconference with the skype application so say we are in this crowded environment. It can cut out and filter out automatically and puts in a virtual screen behind us and fills in the back here to say you are in a coffee shop and you want to do a Video Conference but you dont want them to see everybody around you because its distracting. This automatically filters it out. We have to be plugged in. Its been running for a while but it filters out the background so you have more natural interaction with each other not have to worry about background distractions. This one again puts in the virtual kind of reality world than it takes you out of what you are an input to an indifferent a different space. Obviously with the backgrounds you can figure those as much as you want, as plain as you want. Is the something this something that is added on because of the camera . Right now it requires an addon camera. This is from creative. It will be available shortly. You will have a whole suite of applications and impact we will show you another in just a second. This is just one application you can run with this. In the future this Camera Technology will be tilts right into the pc itself. This is basically like a connect camera. Its interestiinteresti ng you say that. Its similar to that technology and i will show you the second why its different when we look at this them all right here. Your hand was great there. What this is showing is i can take my hand and make it part of the actions so just using regular gestures i can interact different is this is designed for the sixinch to about a foot and a half difference. When im really right in front of it, plus they can do the preciseness of my fingers and it can show you my fingers and i can control things down to the fingertip level as opposed to game consoles where they are any broad gesture and they dont have the accuracy down to the fingertip perspective. You can collect the coins and throw them and you can do a bunch of Different Things with them. Other applications like 3d modeling so they are able to take a 3d model and theyll be able to turn and with my hand gestures. Instead of having to use some system at the keyboard and mouse or Something Like that this makes it much more natural for you to interact with your pc. Is a something that is being developed and are able to run as . It requires a lot of processing so we recommend you havent ultrabook or intel core processor because whats going on behind us a lot of technology to make this happen in real time so yes you do not a lot of processing power. It is what intel is known for
