Comcast, along with these Television Companies supports cspan2 as a public service. Host theres a series of books out called the tuttle twins. Connor boyack is the author and founder of that series. Who are the tuttle twins traffic so ethan and emily title are a couple of kids that learned about the ideas of a free society. Our books take classic texts like the road to serfdom or economics and one lesson, atlas shrugged, even many others cut and we turned them into childrens version. We take the core ideas on this classic books, wrap them in a ia fun story, illustrate them beautifully, and the kids are learning a lot of these ideas that were only accessible for use to adults but now they can be made more accessible to kids. Host where did you come up with the idea and the name . Guest so my partner and i who is our illustrator, we are both the dads and several years ago when we had younger kids we wanted to teach our kids these ideas. I went on amazon one day. I was looking for books that would allow me to talk to my kids about freemarket type ideas, personal freedoms, and there was nothing. There was a little bit about the constitution but there wasnt really anything about some of the more fundamental ideas that the Founding Fathers were really fighting for. So we got to talking and were like lets actually create something. Maybe theres a market for good we did one book is kind of a labor of love, a little test project are a lot of people bought it so we continued from there. We have sold over 4 million books now. We are in 12 languages. We have a car know. Its just blown up quite a lot so its clearly the market has had yes, we need and want this, so were continuing to create more books. Host and the word toddle . Guest tuttle twins, i know i wanted a boy and girl because i wanted it relatable to the boys and girls so we chose twins and it was really a solid process of elimination. We wanted alliteration so we wanted the last name that begin with a t and we went through and said as a dot com website available, is or someone famous with this pain . There was a Strategic Marketing process to come with the names. I have people with a lasting toddle who, unlike you know a total disdain for them . A two apologetically said no, its kind of a boring story but heres what it is. So thats how we landed on the name. Host looking at this volume here, American History, 12151776, thats about 150200 pages. Guest this is to want to 40 pages. We can work onto a half years. Heres a problem it is addressing. I went on amazon and ebay to an to in half years ago at about a whole bunch of social studies textbooks. I wanted to know how our kids today in the schools being taught about the constitution, the declaration, the revolutionary war . Im flipping through all these books can doing a little bit of research and analysis. All of these books did an amazing job at teaching what i consider superficial history, who said what, when, when did this battle take place, who wrote a letter to whom. But the books all miserably failed in my estimation when it came to teaching substantive history. In other words, why did they do what they did . What were the ideas they believed, the philosophy, the values . That the court all of us know, those who dont learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. The problem that we observed was kids today are not being taught to learn from the pass. Youre just being taught about the past. So they grow up finding history boring, irrelevant to their lies. They dont understand why what happened 250 250 years ago d matter today. Our book is an attempt to not only teach what happened in early American History but more importantly to say here with the ideas they were fighting for, heres what animated them, and heres of those ideas apply to our modern world today. Host why did you pick the years 12151776 traffic 1215 is a magna carta, the early effort to codify in a document the protection of rights. We wanted to say we want kids to understand early American History of why the constitution was created. We have to rewind a little bit more than partly or in addition to the magna carta in the 1200s we have the silk road. You had all of these early traders that led to expiration into far off lands trying to find new spices and new products that they could trade along the silk road, and that exploration later led to colonization which led to america. If you want to understand American History we have to rewind a bit and understand the forces that it built a lead into this. So what we say is the story of americas actual a story of trade, a a story of exploratio make our lives better and embark on this project of human flourishing. That is a story of america. 1619 project and others that are trying to cast American History as one of enslavement and White Supremacy and others, that narrative is one we dont agree with. We reject that premise that we believe the american story really began with human flourishing, free trade and that is what led to america today. Host i want to read a quote from nicole hammer of columbia university. You have probably seen this, i want to get your response. The tuttle twins books regularly hawked by rightwing radio host glenn beck ranges from board books to graphic novels to economic curriculum guides. They join a growing array of conservative childrens literature, she goes on to say that these books are to fight with the right sees as liberal indoctrination with some indoctrination of their own. Guest i believe this was a cnn oped. We sold over 100,000 books after this article came out. It was great for business. I would encourage her to write a sequel and published another one. It was very good for business, but to a tougher argument, that article in particular was trying to claim that impeccably the title was a right wing childrens education complex is upon us. And the premise of her article is that we on the right are responding to nothing, that there is, in fact, no leftwing liberal indoctrination, theres nothing to see here, therefore, you guys on the right are not needed and youre responding to nothing. I think thats a false premise. Its an unfair criticism to suggest theres nothing on the socalled left that is attentive to propagandize children. We have a toddler book called antiracist baby and all kinds of efforts to teach children from a different perspective. Its simply not true to say we are responding to nothing. I think it is a fair criticism to say that we are socalled propagandizing children from the perspective of the right. Those who believe in free markets, personal freedom and natural liberty. But to that i say everyone propagandize his chili. When you look at the were propaganda, it means to propagate, to disseminate information. I think can often be construed in a negative way when youre trying to teach information to the exclusion of other ideas and say this is truth, i am authority, you must accept it. I think that is wrong. Thats not what were doing. What we think with the tuttle twins is empowering families to talk about ideas or relate to our modern world. We provide discussion questions. We have activity workbooks and the rest decide to say hey guys, heres what we believe, talk about as a family and see what you believe. So it is less an effort to say here is the correct and only way to view the world, and more await you and power. Likely already agree with our worldview but who want to been passed on to their children the same ideas much as it would from a religious context that they might take the kids to sunday school at by bible study Something Like that but im not a Political Economic stamp what we are those families to talk about these ideas with their children that they only believe and have every right to be talking to the kids in that respect. Host you moved beyond books into cartoons and Youtube Channels . Guest we have podcast and again and we launched our cartoon that became the worlds top funded kits project, and it is doing phenomenally. We are about to finish season one, this extreme high quality animated kids cartoon show an effort again is to have this be something for the whole family were think of a kind of like the simpsons i grew up watching it and i would find the jokes funny as a child, but my parents had that kind of intellectual humor that theyre getting from the simpsons. Thats our goal is that we can have stuff for the young kids and for the adults so they can be learning about this and laughing together. Host the most recent in the tuttle twins book series is americas history 12151776. The tuttle twins series, Connor Boyack is the creator and coauthor thinks are being with us try to appreciate it.
