Book tv askedded, what are you reading this summer . Well, presently, im reading Still Dreaming. It is a book by my colleague, luis butte rez, from gutierrez, from illinois. He gave me a copy of this book about five or six months ago, and i had planned to jump into it quickly, but because of the life we live, i wasnt able to. But then things happened in my district that caused me to try to consume it as quickly as possible. Be. And what was that . Well, i created an organization in my district, in the kansas city portion of my district, called the black brown coalition, the bbc. And what we have done, weve brought together the most high profile latino leaders in our community and the most high profile africanamericans. And in many communities around the nation, there is a friction between the two largest minorities in our country. And so i wanted to try to avoid that and create a coalition of the two largest minorities. So i brought Luis Gutierrez to town to speak to the bbc. We had a standing room only crowd at the Community College s. And when i say standing room only, im not saying that it was just packed. Im saying it was standing room only, you could hardly get in. And he emphasized many of the things that i had been saying at our meetings, and weve been already involved in doing some things together. And so im reading his book because it gives me insight to what latinos are experiencing in this country. As a minority, i know what africanamericans have experienced. I can assume what latinos are experiencing, particularly those children who came to this country and through no fault of their own are barred from receiving any status to go to college and other benefits for citizens. So i am now reading this Still Dreaming because gutierrez is saying in his book that in spite of whats going on, in spite of all the setbacks, he Still Believes that were dreaming. And i discovered that theres a play on words. There is a piece of legislation called the dream act that he has been pushing and, frankly, im one of the sponsors of that bill legislatively. So it gave me the insight of one of the most active and high profile latinos in the United States on whats going on inside his community and his relatives and people he knows who are in this country who are undocumented residents of this country. And so i intend to digest it. What im doing is reading it as i fly back and forth between kansas city and washington. So right now my prediction is that i will be finished with the book before our break in another eight or nine days. What are you reading this summer . Tell us whats on your Summer Reading list.
