Next we learned about a Landscape Architect to decide buffaloes parkside neighborhood as well as new york city central park. Parkside is a neighborhood which was designed by fredrik olmsted. It acts as a buffer between Delaware Park which is where were sitting and the hustle and bustle of buffalo. When he came to public to design this park, buffalo needed part space because it was filled with factories and canneries, all sorts of industry and smelly things that people want to come to the park to get away from. Homestead. Com going to build this park but if you want all of this nasty stuff that people can get away from right on the edge so we designed this neighbor to sort of go round the outside of the park to give it a buffer, residential area but separate the park from the factories and so no more unsightly things that people dont want to be reminded of when theyre in a part. Thats what parkside is, a little buffer between Delaware Park and the hustle and bustle of the rest of whats going on in the city. Its interesting that this was all one guys backyard, a very wealthy newspaper publisher lived up on main street in the hustle of buffalo a couple blocks away. He sold his backyard, his farm to the city then order the had a place to build this beautiful park. That was in the 1870s. During the war of 1812 this was an encampment for hundreds of Union Soldier to ever knows what it off the winter its like. There were guys from virginia and maryland who were here trying to spend the winter in this meadow come and it didnt go so well for them. 300 died and they are buried in the middle of what is now the delaware golf course, sort of buffalos tomb of the unknown soldier. What unique about parkside within the city of buffalo is that each lot was were developed individually. So you had your own architect project your own builder to each house has its own sort of the unique style and feel. This was during a time and 1880s to 1920s. With all sorts of incredible different forms of architecture that which is coming online. Theres a queen anne house next to an arts and crafts house next to an american foursquare come to some who does the architecture, they look like big need althouse about the fact theyre different and unique on next to one another built differently just gives that neighborhood after and feel. In other parts of buffalo in particular where a within one to one decided who were sort of built out in subsection a lot of houses while big and beautiful and old all have sort of the same look. Barks parkside is different that way. I got brought in the rights to design the whole number of buildings. There are four Frank Loyd Wright structures within parkside and theyll have to do with the soap company. Frank lloyd wright also designed the summer home a few hours south of here and designed the soap Company Manufacturing headquarters which as many people in buffalo will talk about was horrifically and terribly condemned during the 1950s but its one of the set piece of offal architecture. People are amazed in architecture. Suddenly one of the things we some of it was torn down in the 1950s. Tiny stores that do not be from buffalo, you dont have to be from parkside to appreciate the love that happen in this community. A great moment in American History that is lost in history books is not even that much about in buffalo. Its interesting right across the street from where this man lived was the Frank Lloyd Wright martin house but at the time the martin house was owned by the university of buffalo and it was the president ial. So the president lived across the street from one of the biggest counterculture professors at ub at the time and always credit a lot of tension. Theres one great story of, time or the ub president was having a party at his counterculture party was also having a party at the same time, and at this great at the martin house women in
