Things are going. This is where manufacturers try to sell to the retailers on what they should have on their store shelves later. What is the importance of the San Jose Mercury news and c. E. S. . What is the connection . Snure business section is on technology, that is what we cover is technology. Im a Technology Columnist for San Jose Mercury news. Do you find that washington and Silicon Valley are on two different planets . I think that is fair to say. I think that the ties are probably getting closer. Theres a lot more interaction these days than before. But i think in many ways, and for a long time, folks in Silicon Valley didnt care or when to know what was going on in washington. Likewise i think people in washington were tone deaf to what is going on in Silicon Valley and the electronic industry. When you talk to Tech Companies in Silicon Valley, what i do they say about washington . That you can report. I think it depends on which companies youre talking about. In some cases, Technology Executives want washington to stay the hell out. Keep it hands off. In some cases, Technology Companies want certain steps from washington. They would like more spectrum for the mobile phone industry. In some cases, again, for washington to not regulate. There was a big up roar about various kind of things regarding privacy or whatever. It is a divided message coming out of Silicon Valley. It depends on the issue. In some cases they want the government to do more action and in some cases they want the government to do less. Give us a preview on the tour youre taking us on today. I want to go the big electronic companies, we will stop by sony, pan sonic, maybe intel as well. Get a flavor of what these companies are showing off here at the show. Lets go. It is very striking to see how the companies not just sony lu samsung and everybody else, has been pushing 3d for the last several years and nobody is mentioning it this year. We can start with the design. It feels comfortable in your hand and you can view the content no matter how the device is tilted. That is great design with sony. It has a five inch display. That technology is required by sony television. So the same power that powers our television is in the mobile device now. It is a powerful device. Is it out in market yet . It is not available yet. It will be in the future. Are there other highlights to the phone . My favorite is the onetouch technology. With the phone, were able to transfer content to another device. That technology for example, i go into walkman and i hit play. Instead of connecting through a wire cable, i tap here and as you can see, it is going to connect and it is automatically here. I never have to go to a bluetooth device. Is that with any of these devices or just sony products . Just sony products. Tap it again and it will disconnect and come back to my phone. Samsung has Similar Technology but it sounds like it wont work with samsung . New york city it wont work with samsung. We made it our way. We also took it a step further. Youre at home with your family and you have content that you want to display on your big screen tv. Take your device and tap your remote and it transfers the content to your tv. What we have here is one of two new devices that weve introduced for 2013. Last year we launched the 84inch last year and now this year were introducing smaller sizes to make it more access eanlt you can put it in different rooms and things like that. Weve been involved in this for quite a while. We have something called from the lens to the living room. The majority of cameras are sony cameras. Three out of four movie theaters use 4k projecters from sony. So they are paying to watch 4k at their local movie theater. Were in a unique position to offer that technology at the user at home. This can be used using your own 4 camera. What size is this screen . This is 65 inches. You have 84, 64 and the 85 and the 85 is over there. Were shooting for midto late spring for it to hit market. Do you know the price . No price yet. Any range or anything . It will be competitive but no price yet. The idea is you will be able to get them out the first one will start off at what dollars 25,000 . Yeah. That said, because we own a movie studio as well, were leveraging that relationship, the were leveraging the contents we have access to. As we speak, anyone who gets the 84 Inch Television gets the video player and it comes from loaded. Along with independent movies and it is available to the users at no charge to them. At some point in time, during the second half of the year question will officially unveil a content Delivery System that will enable folks to have access to more content. Is that going to be delivered to the tv like a netflix or something or Download Service currently folk who is get the 84 inch get the player. As content becomes available sony sends them a disk and they transfer that on to the play perp as to the mode of transport or distribution, nothing has been announced just yet. It is possible it could be streaming or physical but nothing has been announced yet. What about bluray d. V. D. S as well . We have bluray sets that were mastered in 44k. I guess i miss understood. Youre going to offer 4k d. V. D. . In the summer we will offer a Distribution Service that will be made for 4k. What you can do in a retail store is a 2k d. V. D. But that may have been shot in 4k. What have you learned . They are pushing 4 hill d. Is that 4,000 pixel . Basically. Right now h. D. Television is defined as one that has 1080p. You have lines of resolution by 2,000 columns of resolution. On a 4k tv you have double that. So you have the double lines of resolution and double the columns of resolution. You get about 4,000 columns of resolution on a 4k tv. Because both sides are doubled, both the length teanl columns, you get four times the resolution of a regular television. So it is useful on a big screen tv. Most experts would say it is useful on a 60 inch or below. Below 60 inches you cant tell a difference. On a large tv and if youre sitting close to it you can tell the difference. There was a display where they were demonstrating newspaper texts and they were showing what it looked like on a 1080p and what it looks like on a 4k large screen and you can tell the difference. It is sharper and clear on a 4k tv than a 1080p tv. The 4k are extremely expensive. Sony came out with their 4k tv this year and they start off with 25,000. They are hoping to get the prices down but youre still talking about several times the cost of a regular 1080p television for the same size of a 4k television. There is no content throughout. Sony is distributing a hard drive that has 10 movies on it. I dont know about you, but i watch more than 10 movies. So you cant get your latest Television Shows in 4k. You wont bet the vast majority of movies in 4k. There is nothing out there in 4k right now. So sony is trying to helple spur that along. Sony has a lot of the movies that are shot these days are actually shot in 4k. They are distributed to consumers in 1080p resolution. They are hoping to move the ball so you can get more out in 4k be thank you is a big process. Frankly, i have my doubts that they are going to put moucht in 4k unless there is a sizable market that will watch this content. There is going to be a considerable expense distributing 4k. They learned the same thing in 3d. It is like this chicken and egg thing. There is not a lot of 3d stuff out flp 4k will be worse because in a sense it is only offered for a bigsize television and the market for bigsize television is growing it is still a fraction of the total market. Troy wolverton, how do you look at sony in the tech atmosphere . Sony, for a long time was considered the pen kill of technology. They were can Diamond Company but they have been knocked off in recent years. Sony was the dominant Gaming Company five years ago. Todays, they are in third place. If you look at music players, sony was the documents innocent player with the walkman then they got knocked off by the ipod. They are not a huge player in smartphones. It is funny, i was at the samsung conference yesterday. Samsung has become the sony of today. Samsung dominates loost of the markets, including the smartphone. You could say that about sony five, 10, 15 years ago but you cant say it today. This is the communicators and were following Troy Wolverton at the c. E. Sefment until las vegas. This is out in the spring. One of the interesting things about it is it is an ultrabook, it also has full touch capability, so i can use it like a tablet. I can convert it into a full mode. The keyboard turns off, right . Yes, the keyboard turns off and i can fold it and i dont have to worry about any applications happening. Bring it back, convert it back up and it goes back into the mode and the keyboard is back on. So the keyboard turns on when it is or more than 180 degrees . Correct. What is great about this, you can put it in another mode where i can have it like this and the screen automatically reconfigures. If im watching a movie and you are looking down. This you can prop up, prop it on the bed sitting next to you or on the table top or if you want to show off photos, you have a full interface propped up for you. Again, it will be available later this year, in the springtime frame. Right. That is going to be like a 800 700 price point . It starts at 799. This one is designed for business. It will be available for all. If i want, i can have it as a full p. C. But then, for this, if i want to move it into a tablet, i can move the tablet part and it is full p. C. Everything is built into it, i have windows 8 and etc. If i want to, i can put it back together. Another interesting thing, i can put it in the opposite way, so i can have it as a tablet facing out. When you do that you get a better battery life built into the base . Exactly. I can carry it like this and my keyboard is protected. It splits the battery useage between the screen and the base so you get what six hours on top but together you get 10 . Right. Again, as a p. C. I get the extra battery built into the base as well as the tablet as well. This one is going to be 1,200 or 999 . The price has not been set yet but in that range and it will be available next month. So how many different designs are you showing off . We have about 40 different designs. There are over 140 ultrabooks available today. But not all of those are convertible . Correct. But 140 of them 40 of them will have touch capabilities and the convertible were showing about a dozen of those. Whether or not it is detachable and some twist or flip or those that fold over. There are 40 that have touch capabilities but only a dozen are convertible . Correct. Something interesting that is happening today which is different from the p. C. Market in previous times, you have to take a look at this and decide which is best for your lifestyle. You have a lot of choice now. You can think i like this tablet and only occasionally im timing things. For that this is a great model for you. If you want a regular p. C. And only sometimes do i want to put it in a tablet mode, this will be the right design for you. Or you have this, which is fully detachable and you can take it as a tablet and it also sets up for p. C. You have to look at your lifestyle and what works best for you. Interest things that are happening on the desktop side. They are making desktop all in one, these are full p. C. Capabilities built into a gianttype of screen. All you see is the screen, keyboard, and mouse. They have touch capability but they also have capability to be used portably. Youre not always tethered to an outlet. They have a builtin battery. The battery only lasts a couple of hours. It is designed where you can take it down and use it as a p. C. But when i want to have fun with it, i can take it around the house. If i twoon watch to watch a movie i can take it into another room. Or hockey i can play with my whole family. Everything is built into the p. C. Is that right . Correct. What were looking at here is verizon. It is a 27inch display and as a full windows 8 p. C. And you can use it with a keyboard or mouse. Now, it also has a builtin battery. So i can take it around my house. Far, i take it to my Kitchen Table and hold it down fold it down. It is less than 20 pounds. It is not something you would take on vacation, it is designed for you house. I have access to my photos, my videos, i also have access to games. One you can choose is monopoly. If i want to play, we gather around the table and look at this screen. It is the same game that you know and love but done electronicically so a little bit more fun. So here we have the game and were going to play. How long will the battery last . A couple of hours. It is designed for the portability aspect of it. Now were ready to roll. Heres my dice but because it is touch you can shake the dice up . I can shake the dice. It rolls and it automatically moves. Then it asks do i want to buy . I say yes, i would like to buy. It is the game that you know and love. So can i get the 500 in the free parking pot . It is the standard game. I always play that way. Now, it is your turn. I get to be the iron. Thank god, im visiting. Youre just visiting. I want to try to shake the dice. Thats a good company. I like the utilities, i think they are a good buy. Now it is your turn. My turn. There you go. I dont worry about money, the money floating around, it is all done electronically. Can you you can do everything you can do with a normal monopoly game. Correct. Ok. Like Microsoft Surface was, the original surface a couple of years ago. Correct. That was done for more commercial applications. This is an all in one, this is not designed to play games, it is one of the benefits of it. It has lots of storage space. You have the 27inch touch pad. Then you get the added benefit of storeability and play gas with your family. Is this already out of the market . It will be available shortly. They havent announced the price yet. The details are still being worked out. Ok. This is running, with an intel chip, what chip . It is the state of the art performance, so, again you get full p. C. , full performance, stateoftheart from intel. Then it takes me back to this screen and i can go back into my windows display. You were talking, i guess talking an [inaudible] thats right. One thing were seeing for consumers is the touch capability. You interact like we interact. We use our hand gestures and our face. You see interesting things with facial recognition. Like natural energy. Exactly. This shows how you interact more naturally with your system. You have a 3d camera. And what this is showing is pretwerned doing a Video Conference with skype. Say were in this crazy environment like we are now. It can filter out automatically and put a green screen behind us. Say youre in a coffee shop and you want to do a Video Conference with someone but you dont want them to see everybody behind you. We have to be plugged in this has been running for a while. But it will filter out the background so we can have a nafplg interaction with each other and not worry about background distraction. This is the reality world and it takes you out of what youre in and puts you in a different space is. Obviously, with the backgrounds you can configure them to be what you want and as clean as you want. Is this something that is added on because of the camera . It requires an addon camera. Not available yet but will be available shortly. You will have applications that you will be able to do. Ill show you another one. This is one application you can run with. In the future, this will be birlt into the p. C. Itself. So this is like a connect camera for a p. C. . It is interesting that you say that. It is similar to the technology and i will show you in a second it is different. If we look at this one. What this is showing is i can take my hand and make it part of the action. Using regular gestures, i can interact with what i have on film. It brought up connect as an example. This is different, this is designed for six inch to a hoot and a half difference. Plus, it can do the preciseness of my actual fingers. I can control things down to the fingertip level. As opposed to other game console where is they are a broad gesture perspective and you dont have the accuracy to the fingertip perspective. You can collect coins and you can throw those and do a bunch of Different Things with them. Other applications will be coming, like 3d modeling. I will be able to turn it with my hand gestures. Instead of using some kind of system like a keyboard and mouse, this makes it more natural to interact with your p. C. Is this being part of ultrabook . It does require a lot of process passenger what is going on behind there is a lot of technology to make sh happen in real time. You do need a lot of Processing Power to make that happens, which is great because that is what intel is known for. It also works with other companies to make sure these technologies will be built in their systems evently. We showed you here too, which gives you a touch interface or hand gesture and more of a racial recognition. Were also facial recognition. Open this application, do natural user dictation into that. There is a lot of things to make it more like we interact to each other than interacting with a machine. What have you learned here . We learned that youre seeing a lot of determination from consumer electronic manufacturers, whether it is experting with new computer designs or new features or functions for a mobile phone. There is a lot of experimentation going on, not mindblowing innovations. But were seeing a lot of build on what we made before and making the devices for useful for us.
