The most rural and sparsely Populated Areas in the state as well. Lets introduce you to the two candidates. Democrat cindy axne has Healthy Office since 2019 has held the office since 2019. And challenger zach nunn has hook held his office since 2017. The candidate has held his office since 2017. If either candidate is mentioned by name, then the candidate will have 30 seconds to respond. Moderators canned get candidate dashcam we drew names out of a hat to stop to start. And we begin with misses axne. Some of the wealthiest in in the state are also if elected, how would you represent the interests of iowans on both sides of the political and economic spectrum . Sen. Nunn it is important after as a representative of the state of iowa that i listen ive been able to serve iowans during some of the most difficult times in this country. The reason that i have been successful in getting as accomplished is because i am bipartisan in getting things done. Ive been that 85 of the bills that i have cosponsored have been bipartisan and the majority of the bills that i bring to the floor are bipartisan and the reason why is because thats how you get done area if anybody knows me, they know that it is my job to get things done for iowa. I spend my time out in district, listening, hearing concerns and bringing them back to washington to make sure that im hearing from both urban iowa as well as suburban and rural. I developed a Rural Task Force to address the needs of Rural Communities and i will be there for every person in this district no matter the zip code. How will you represent across the political district. Im very excited to have people from across the district in here. I am privileged to have my wife and family. Were six generation iowans we grew up as a farming community. I served multiple combat tours overseas. No matter if you were republican or democrat we had a common mission, to serve our country, that is part of the reason we have been honored to serve. And we have received the hoover award as some of the most bipartisan legislators. If youve been to the Grocery Store recently youve seen prices rise. If you filled out filled up your car you seen how expensive it is. I see everyone shaking their heads tonight. If you were here when biden and axne were elected, you are in the minority, your family and my family have it harder now then when they started. Go ahead. [laughter] rep. Axne right now in iol we have a 2. 6 unemployment iowa we have a 2. 6 unemployment rate. Ive been serving both democrats and republicans getting things done for the state of iowa. There is more money in peoples pocket these days because of the support that they received from the American Rescue plan. We are improving every day on Price Fluctuations to get them down to normal. Youve seen gas come down. Prices will continue to come down and we will continually work on that. We do want to talk about inflation, the latest number from the federal government shows that inflation is slowing, but in august prices worse a up 8. 3 from a year earlier. Mr. Nunn, you have been nickel of the critical of the Biden Administration what are your policies to combat inflation . I have been a great leaders ive been a great leader in this. Lets get the money back to islands. They will invest in their families, hometowns, and farms. In washington, they are spending three times over. My opponent has voted 100 percent of the time with the Biden Administration. It has made eye while worse. We are no longer energy independent. Every family is suffering right now that is one of the most from death it meant ive heard. death date meant ive heard tone deaf statments ive ever heard. We are in a situation here where we iowa can lead by example and not let them dictate to us how they will spend our tax dollars but level a tax on top of what has been spent. You have been very supportive of President Bidens plans yelling with inflation, what needs to happen next . Rep. Axne with a working on this since covid, it has started to wane and weve seen supply chain issues. I have a supply chain agenda that i put forth. To try to get our goods out of port which they were stopping because of the Cargo Carriers holding us hostage. It included making sure we held fossil fuel Companies Accountable so that they started producing the rates that they were before covid. And then we went further to fix our roads, bridges and bring good paying jobs here. The chips act will bring good jobs to america again for things that we use on a daily basis. And then finally, capping insulin at 35 a month allowing us to negotiate the cost of prescription drugs and lowering your energy costs, clean energy that we are producing here in iowa and across the country. Its time we stopping so dependent on other countries for things that we need here in america. There is a big demand for workers in iowa right now. Unemployment rates are at a historic low. How do you grow the labor force. We have consistently stayed around 3. 5 in in iowa for decades. Heres the problem, we have republicans in the white house who havent put efforts toward the communities and making sure that we have the arts and cultures that we need. He brags about a tax break but its only for corporations and the wealthy. The everyday person cant get ahead. We need to make sure that we are looking at these issues that are facing iowans had on. Ive been doing that nonstop out in washington, making sure that their voices are heard. I take offense to his statement that i am tone deaf to the issues that people are facing. I know the price of gas, the price of milk, and the price of bread. I have two boys that eat a heck of a lot of food. I understand the pain that iowans are facing. I am continually working to make sure that i bring prices down. How do you propose about growing iowa was workforce . Sen. Nunn successfully and iowa we have built a apprenticeship program. We dont hand out a 10,000 check to kids who havent gone this who havent paid off their loans or gone into the the military. The other aspect of this is how to attract more people to iowa. We have great jobs. The government attempted to shut down iowa for two years. With great leadership by our governor we opened back up and we had great leadership in the classroom. Something that the country is now looking for. When they failed in afghanistan and left behind dozens of americans and thousands of our allies we chartered our own our own aircraft to bring allies back to the United States. We want to move now to the topic of abortion. Abortion access has been in the headlines since the Supreme Court overturned roe v. Wade earlier this year. Please clarify your position on abortion. Sen. Nunn this isnt something we always get the opportunity to do. Good people can disagree on the issue of abortion. I want to be clear, i am prolife, i support the mother and baby. We have voted repeatedly in iowa to support the health of mothers. We provide exceptions for rape incest and fetal abnormalities. With the moms act, we give any advantage to people who want to adopt. And we have sponsored overthecounter contraception to help women when they needed most. My opponent would allow abortion up until the day of birth. Additionally, tax funded abortion even if the child is viable. This is worse than what we seen in china and north korea and it is wrong. Most iowans dont agree with that. You may directly respond, is there a limit toward abortion . Rep. Axne i think my stance on womens Reproductive Health is clear, there should be no decision made but by the women, the doctor should be able to inform her decision but the decision should be made by the woman. We have seen my opponent in a primary debate question when questioned if he supported abortion when it came to cases of rape, he braced his he raised his hand no. He said he would not support abortion in cases of incest, or in the cases of endangering a mothers life. This was just a few months ago. Lets remember, he had he supported a 2017 abortion bill that had no exceptions for rape or incest. This mans decisions on abortion are extreme, they are out of touch with iowans and they are out of touch with what women and people across this country want to see. I need a followup here, mr. Nunn has said that you support abortion up into the time of fourth birth, is that true . That is an absurd statement. I am a mother of two boys and as the only person on the stage who has given birth, i find that extremely offensive. Women have heard this business before. Does he really think women are having babies and then think, kill the baby. That is crazy talk. He is running around on tv talking about it. I take such great offense to that the has because you have no idea what its like to be a mother. You have no idea what its like to bear a child, you have no idea what its like to take care of the child from the framework of being a mother. You do . You know how to take care of children . Wonderful. She is 15 seconds. To answer your question, stacy, no. I do not support that. It is a fabricated lie by the Republican Party, they push this false narrative. Nobody believes that a child should be born and then murdered, to say so is offensive. Thats exactly what you voted for, anyone can look at it online. Lets be clear here. There are so many i went who are struggling where they are. We in iowa, across the board, democrats and republicans support the health of the mother and reasonable exceptions. You supported the Hyde Amendment to not only do this in the United States but pay other countries. We want to raise our children and health and grow more help to grow more. Is there legislation that you would pursue on a federal level regarding abortion or should this be left to individual states to decide amongst themselves . Rep. Axne it should be left to women. I trust women. The law of the land was roe v. Wade. It was settled. It is what all americans, women across this great state, country of ours, was the rights that women believe they had. The Supreme Court stripped that right from women across the country. We woke up one day, and our boys had more right than our daughters dead. I support roe v. Wade. It is why i have voted twice for the Womens Healthcare protection act to make sure that we codify roe v. Wade and allow the opportunity for women once again across the entry to make the decision that is most personal to them and their family with the help of their doctor, their family and no one else. This is a decision that would i get to make. Should be left to the federal government or the individual state . She says it she says one thing and i was in a different thing in the state. She has said that she will pack the courts to have judges vote the way that we want them to. Under the 10th amendment of the constitution, it returns the decision back to the states. This is back this is not my decision, this is not your decision, it is the iowans decision. You tried to take that away from them with the vote that you took in washington dc right after the dobbs case, read the bill. And the life of the child even at the time of birth. Have a taxpayer funded education of a child. This is not what the majority of iowans believe in. We do need to move on but he did mention you by name. Rep. Axne once again, my opponent seems to be chockfull of misinformation. Lets call it lies. When i voted for the Womens Health care act, i would codify the aspects of roe v. Wade. Again, he is sitting there talking, saying this isnt my decision . This is womens decision. It doesnt belong in the state legislator and iowa. We need to trust women on this issue. And as a woman, i met a good position to talk about that. Many americans, who have college debt, will soon be able to apply for loan forgiveness. Youve been highly critical of that plan, youve mentioned it even earlier this evening. If not its up of that plan is there something that congress should do to make college more affordable to make college more affordable . If our opponent was actually present instead of again france on vacation and instead of saying that she had covid and thats why she missed it. There was an executive order to spend more than that in the same week. Many people went to college and saved money and works hard. There are others who served in the military and work hard and served overseas to afford college. And there are others who are paying down the right way. But the wrong way is to spend nearly 300 plus billion dollars that takes money from everyone else will be paying. What if we invested that money and a trade school, or a firsttime electrician to help them with their. With their first toolkit. Here in iowa, weve done it the right way. We were afforded people weve oh rewarded people weve rewarded people the right way. Absolutely, congress has a role in this. There needs to be skin in the game from the universities involved. Someone is going to inherit this. Colleges themselves have a responsibility to put skin in the game. Congress has a responsibility to the commitment of america to make sure that education is affordable and those skills its that we need. Most importantly, we need to make sure that those individuals who are taking on debt are doing it and a reasonable way and not spend a lifetime dented to a bank or Lending Institution or the u. S. Government because we have not set those individuals up for success. I have had the privilege of serving overseas and that helped paid for by kids and my wife to go to school. We can make powerful and impactful decisions. If you want to go to school to become a nurse, the state of iowa pays for that but you need to work in rural iowa afterwards. Teachers have an opportunity as long as they serve here in iowa. What would you have done differently did he have two minutes . That seemed quite long. First let me address the false narrative or the light coming out of the opponents mouth over here. I promptly voted for the Inflation Reduction Act when we were out of session. As a mother, i will not apologize for spending time with my family has my boys went to school. We had one month where we did not have session, and three weeks where my boys did not have school and we could take a family trip together. I am so glad to be able to spend that time with my husband, because you never know when your family will be back together again. I know that every family out there knows how hard it is to plan these things and can understand that. I wanted to make sure i ones have a voice. Unlike other congressional members i served with, they chose to avoid against the Inflation Reduction Act. It was 200 billion dollars in savings from the Inflation Reduction Act. Being able to negotiate the cost of prescription drugs for the first time instead of being beholden to big pharma. I wanted to make sure that vote was there for iowans. Not only did we lower the cost of prescription drugs. The question i have asked is you were not necessarily a fan of, or said you would do it differently when it comes to student loan forgiveness. What would you do differently . Reppo actsing rep. Axne we have a lot to do in the country to lower the cost of college and it gens with making sure every kid has an opportunity. I thought for all the kindergartners in des moiness when i found out that 50 of kids got an inferior education. I believe our Education System should be the great equalizer. It should not matter what zip code you come from. That is why i want to make college affordable. The plan President Biden put in place was his decision. In addition to taking care of Student Loan Debt it has great provisions like making sure we cap pay back at no more than 5 of somebodys income. Then, the loan itself opposed to interest so it is not continue to grow. I want that. Investment in trade schools and a pretty ship programs, supporting twoyear programs at Community Colleges so every eye one has a chance at secondary education. Both of you say both of you say the u. S. mexico border needs to be secured. What approach would you take . Rep. Axne we need to address Immigration Reform holistically and we dont have enough elected officials that have courage enough to take these tough subjects on because they are always in an election year. We need Immigration Reform. We need to be a welcoming country. We need to help immigrants find an opportunity in this country like so many of our relatives did. This is why we need to pass the dream act and welcome young people into our communities. We need to develop a pathway to citizenship so we can have undocumented immigrants playing by the rules become citizens. We do need to protect to the border and i have voted to do that. I voted to send money to the border for fencing and drones to support our Border Patrol and to make sure we are getting people processed through the system more quickly through customs enforcement. There is a lot more that needs to be done and i hope we can come to the table and address it holistically. Mr. Annan, what needs to be accomplished to secure the border . Sen. Nunn she said she was in france when she lied about covid to the clerk, ultimately lying to us, the american people. Thats disappointing for a member of congress. She highlighted that the ira reduced the debt far more than what she could not answer by the massive illegal Loan Forgiveness Program where it was the number one article to respond to under the constitution. I have been to the border and talked directly to customs and Border Patrol. I saw this administration their budget slash their budget. They are 20 understaffed. There is a double edged sword of human trafficking, a human crisis and a security crisis. Sentinel is coming across the border. They found two pounds of sentinel fentanyl, enough to kill the entire city of iowa wiped out in one backpack. We cannot talk about a good path wait citizenship. We want to talk about funding for Public Schools in iowa. It has been a major topic lately with Governor Reynolds planning to use state money to pay for private school scholarships. Mr. Nunn, you were in the state senate as this progressed through. Sen. Nunn i think iowa has some of the best schools in the country now. Our kids go to Public Schools and its important for all of us. Every year i have been in the senate i have made sure we make Sustainable Growth investment in Public Schools. The governor put forward a creative plan. When the federal government tried to shut down schools, we were able to keep many open. Some did not and kids started to fall behind. In iowa, our nineyearolds are reading at a level appropriate for them. In the rest of the country, far too many of them have fallen far behind. My opponent went so far as to call christians crazy to hide behind god or the cross or whatever because they refused to stand up to be put down by a federal mandate. Thats wrong. In iowa we have tried to prioritize how we take care of our kids by investing in educators and recognizing parent voices. Giving them the 17,000, a portion of that to go to a school of their choice. Rep. Axne, this is a state issue, but your thoughts on this program . Rep. Axne i want to address a couple things because he mentioned me a couple times, always something false. You keep going back to the proxy vote. 178 members took that that day because we were out of session. That means it was a lastminute vote called. That included a republican from iowa, marian at miller meeks, that you keep forgetting about. She was not on covid. The situation is it is the language required to use to be able to vote. I could have not voted and not had to sit here and listen to this. But i chose to take the right to vote for iowa knowing i would probably be paraded by my opponent and republicans were trying to do the right thing for iowa in the circumstance i was put in, both to lower the cost of prescription drugs, put money in your pocket through lowering energy costs and provide good paying jobs to iowa and address the climate issue at the same time. He will keep bringing this up. He is making an issue out of this, but there is not an issue. Talk to representative miller meeks who proxy voted. Major talking points so far in this campaign. Next, we talked to candidates individually to tear the air. You are watching the third Congressional District debate on kcc i. We will be back in 90 seconds. Welcome back to our Third District debate. We want to focus on a couple issues brought up through the campaign. Ms. Axne, according to the New York Times you and your husband reported stock trades in 13 companies that presented conflicts of interest with your work in contrast congress. What do you see your work in congress. What do you say to people that have concerns about that . Rep. Axne i have iras and College Savings account. I do not execute any trades within those retirement or College Student savings accounts. I believe that representatives should not be able to purchase or trade stocks. But certainly, sitting on a committee does not mean you have a conflict of interest. I find it humorous that it has been mentioned that wells fargo is a part of the groups that we called in sometimes for hearings at the Financial Services committee. As i had a conflict of interest with that i do not think i would be grilling the former ceo so badly with the jobs they outsourced from here leaving folks without the trade adjustment assistance they needed so three weeks after the hearing he left his job. I am in it for iowa every step of the way and always will be. Mr. Nunn, federal records show you accepted money from a business owned by the chinese government. What do you say to people that have kennett questions about your connections to china . Sen. Nunn i have had the village of fine combat miss jens missions off the coast of china. We are proud to be endorsed by the 160,000 farmers that endorsed me. Millions of dollars is coming from dark money that you promised not to take just two years ago. The reality here. I was talking with a farmer in adams county that highlighted the fact, how does somebody forget to file they made almost . 5 million in stock trades . That is the cindy axne excuse. You have a responsible to hold them accountable, and yourself accountable. These stock trades create fear in iowa once. That is why i lead a bill that we would never trade stocks. Congresswoman, will you stop trading stocks . Rep. Axne he thinks my husband and i were sitting on a mountain of cash instead of driving an 11yearold cart to aldi to do grocery shopping. I would never tell americans they cant have investment accounts for their children and retirement. This was an issue that was completely cleared by a bipartisan congressional ethics committee. They asked me, what can we do differently to train members so they get the paperwork right . I have a background in leadership, development, and trading. Once again. This is a lie. He has nothing good to support his agenda other than false narratives. The next question has to do with Mass Shootings in american schools. They have been happening for years. Sen. Nunn, does congress have a role to play in stopping them . Sen. Nunn we have a responsibility to protect our kids and the second amendment. In iowa we have been leaders making Mental Health a priority. We pioneered childrens Mental Health with a playbook for the rest of the country. We make sure that money goes directly for schools to secure and harden facilities. We make a point to work with Law Enforcement and not treat Law Enforcement as the enemy and not even allow them onto campus. That is what has happened here in some Public Schools. There is a reality that we can enforce good firearms laws, not just create and write more with no enforcement behind them. This is why i am in favor of supporting real Law Enforcement, putting 200,000 new officers in Service Across the u. S. At the federal level. Not a potemkin village false bill that was passed in the house and has no chance in the senate. Rep. Axne, a does congress have a role to play in stopping School Shootings . Rep. Axne potemkin what . Sen. Nunn potemkin village, a false bill, that will not actually pass. Thats why Law Enforcement endorsed me. Rep. Axne we absolutely need to do something about gun shootings across the country. I look out and see young people who wonder every day if they will live through tomorrow. My children and all children in iowa have gone through too many active shooter drills in schools. We need to reinstate the assault weapons ban taken off the books a decade ago. We know that will reduce Mass Shootings. We need to pass laws across the country like i have voted for in congress that are common, sensible gun laws to keep people safe. Background checks. Making sure we protect people in families who are getting guns. This guy and the Republican Party is putting an amendment on the ballot this year to ease gun laws in iowa. Please dont vote for that. It will make it harder to put common sense legislation in place. Sen. Nunn i think she was referencing the sky. But not by name, so we move on. The u. S. Spent billions of dollars to help ukraine fight russia. What should the u. S. Role be in the battle . Should it be the same or different now . Sen. Nunn i want to quickly address gun safety in iowa. Iowa has these laws on the books. We do background checks and hold people accountable. We need to stick to this topic. Sen. Nunn President Biden saw brescia invade crimea when he was Vice President and russia invade crimea when he was Vice President and it did nothing about it. Three times the president emboldened russia by not standing up to them. I spent a career leading deployed airmen in operations against russia. I have faced russian fighter jets. Russia only stands up when america stands up for itself. In iowa we collected jackets and helmets and send them to ukraine so they could fight for themselves. We need to stand up to autocrats not only in moscow but in beijing and toronto tehran. But just turning on a spigot of money with no actual outcome for ukraine is more dangerous and puts us more dependent on foreign oil. Rep. Axne, what should the u. S. Role be with ukraine and russia . Rep. Axne i have had the privilege of listening to a lot of ms. Zelinski when she addressed congress. The tragedy is terrible. Children dying. Families who lost everything. We have to do everything we can to help folks in ukraine, and its working. Unfortunately, he said the sanctions did not work. The sanctions has been working. As somebody who helped put those together, those sanctions are against trade, banking, and cutting off their money flow and they have helped move Ukrainian Forces forward by giving them opportunity because we cut off cash to russia and so did many other countries. It is working. I believe we need to continue to support ukraine and injure allies of ours around the world are supported. Ensure allies of ours around the world are supported. We will do what we need to do to help those people. There are a lot of topics in foreign affairs. What is the number one foreign threat to the u. S. Now . Sen. Nunn unequivocally, china. When i worked on the National Security council we made it a top priority. When i was deployed as a leader of the air force under the Trump Administration we stood up to china. Our best allies in the region are japan and south korea. This Administration Calls north korea our best ally. Another border crisis is happening as a result of china. Tons of fentanyl is being produced in china and imported into the u. S. Illegally through our southern border. Its not only a humanitarian crisis. Its a National Security crisis. Until the u. S. Has ability to stand with allies like taiwan, south korea, and japan to contain china, they continue to outfox us. This administration has done nothing to deter chinas violent actions in weapons buildup and its use of slave labor through the uighurs, and its export of deadly fentanyl to our high schools. The number one foreign threat in the u. S. Now . Rep. Axne overall, Cyber Security in general is something our country needs to address and i have been talking about that since i was on the stage in my first primary. China is absolutely a threat, whether they are stealing our propriet proprietary information, intellectual property. Or whether they are threatening our allies. We need to step up and support taiwan. We need to watch out for their actions. My opponent has taken money from a Company Owned by chinese steaks. It is backed by the chinese military. Not only did he do that, he supported a tax credit that ended up sending jobs out of iowa. It was a tax break that gave jobs to china. When he could not make that vote, he put together a resolution signed by no other senators because it was so egregious. It was a love letter to china. In the end, he asked it to be sent to the general consulate in chicago and you dont do that unless you want them to know what you think. 30 seconds then move on. President biden is among your alex, rep. Axne your allies, rep. Axne. His Approval Rating in iowa is 27 . How do you view your relationship with the president and how does it impact your work in congress . Rep. Axne the sad thing is in todays media environment, everybody ties everyone together no matter what side you are on. They say you agree with somebody because you are a democrat and the same thing with republicans and thats not the truth. I am out here working for iowa and i have been since i started the job. I want to put more money in your pockets, give your family more opportunity, and level the Playing Field so iowa gets ahead. For too long we have seen states like california and new york with dozens of representatives get a greater share of the opportunity then iowa. I have started to level the Playing Field introducing things like the rural reinvestment tax force, raising the voices of robo america in washington, no matter what president said something Rural America in washington no matter what president sets in the office. We need all the help we can get to make our voices amplified. I will push an agenda important for iowa. Thank you. Mr. Nunn, former President Trump has endorsed you in this race, but does not appear on your Campaign Website list of supporters. What is your relationship with the former president . What influence would he have on your work should you be elected . Sen. Nunn i served under the former president as a combat role and state senator. We are proud to have everyone that wants to come to iowa. We have a unique opportunity every four years to have the first in the nation as republicans and i wish mike ross would do the same thing and i wish democrats would do the same thing and not call iowa too rural and racist. At the same time, i want to be very clear that my opponent votes 100 of the time with joe biden and the biden agenda and that is dangerous. I have stood up to republicans. In my first year i refused to raise taxes on my community. I think that is a sign of valor, not a sign of fidelity to a Leadership Team that has raised all of our tax is 15 . When she had the opportunity, but lied about it because of covid, she had the opportunity to stand up for iowa and not have 80,000 new tax collectors after doors. Both of you across this district that is very diverse need to appeal to moderates in both parties to win. Mr. Nunn, why are you the right choice for moderate democratic voters . When we first ran we were in a moderate a democrat leaning district. Even my mother in law. Eventually we won her over. The reality is in this state, iowa is perpetually purple and you have to work for everybody. In this wake race iowa was third iowas Third District will define congress. This year a tax bonanza has no way at your roth ira, retirement, and College Savings. It has been difficult for parents like myself to drive our 10yearold minivan and decide whether we will cook out tonight or fill up the car. Too many people are watching their future look darker. That is not an american dream. Its an american dystopia. If you think you are better off now than two years ago, maybe she is speaking to you. At the reality is far too many of us, families like yours and mine, are suffering. This is something ms. Mxne, axne, why are you right for folks on the moderate republican side . Rep. Axne about one third of the district is independent. I want to work for all iowans. There is probably not one town hall where i have not said that. I do not care what letter is behind a name. I am a fifth generation iowan. Both my families parents come from farm families in southern iowa and they taught me and my two sisters to stand up for people in our community. It did not matter what letter was behind their name. It did not matter anything other than the fact they were our neighbors. I have gone out and proved that. I have been twice named the most bipartisan member of iowas congressional delegation by the georgetown Public Policy school. 85 of the bills i back are bipartisan. 100 of the bills i voted for had some level of bipartisanship. I am grateful if President Biden wants to vote for my bill. I will take everybody that wants to vote for iowa. Last year was the sixth warmest year across the globe. What role, if any, does congress have a fighting Climate Change ms. Axne . Rep. Axne a big role. When i talk to farmers across the district i hear concerns about the soil, the depletion of it as terrible storms come through. I was the only democrat that voted for a republican amendment for the American Rescue plan to make sure we supply support for folks that had suffered from the durational. We have a chance in the farm bill now to look at sustainability and help farmers with yields and ensure the food we grow has greater nutrients. I want to tell you that we are getting busy on this now. We have passed the most sweeping Climate Change agenda the country have ever seen in the Inflation Reduction Act adding new opportunities in iowa for good paying jobs, clean energy, clean solar and wind. Also, expanding my snl bill to bring biofuels across the country, lowering the cost at the pump. That is time. Mr. Annan, should congress have a big role in addressing Congress Change . Sen. Nunn w absolutely. There is a great model in iowa. We work hard in iowa to listen to the people closest to the product, iowa farmers. No will be no one will be a better conservator of the land. We are a six generation farm family. Where our land is successful, the environment is better and we can take care of folks not just to feed the world, but helped fuel it. In iowa we take and all of the above approach doing wind energy , solar energy, biodiesel my bio tunnel bioethanol and making sure fossil fuels burn cleaner and better. In washington when this bill was passed it forced us off good u. S. Energy and onto foreign dependent towers. 120 per barrel from china. We had to dig into Strategic Oil reserves and to take oil meant for a time of war just so we can keep the economy going, while selling oil at the bow out the back door to places like china. The current farm bill expires next year. We have a lot of farmers in the district. Mr. Nunn, what is working with the current bill and what needs to change . Sen. Nunn we have to protect crop insurance. As a farmer, having a crop is an investment that becomes more and more expensive. Under the current regime of inflation for feed prices are up over 100 and the fertilizer to maintain your field is up nearly 300 . A former lives on a razors edge. They are not price givers. They are price takers and have to depend on the economy. I did the farm bill we have to make sure we support yearround ethanol. This is something i hope our congresswoman will take to heart when she goes back to the epa. Get out of the way of farmers and the farm bill. We are sending out federal regulators to inspect everything from a ditch to a waterway, taking farmers out of their field when they need it most. The farm bill should empower farms. I hope i have the opportunity to serve on the Agriculture Committee to make this a priority for the entire country. Rep. Axne, what is working in the farm bill and what needs to change . Rep. Axne i am looking forward to working on the farm bill. I agree with my opponent on the crop insurance. That is something we have to make sure it stays intact. I have been hearing words on the senate side that they are looking at addressing this. Mark my words, under my watch, we will not address crop insurance. We will make sure every penny goes to farmers. We have to make sure we mitigate risk with things like aviation flu and african swine fever. My bill increased the numbers of Security Patrol at our ports of authority so we dont bring things like african swine fever to iowa and keep our hurts safe. We have to look at sustainability and diversity so farmers can can you continue to grow crops that bring greater revenue. We are looking at things like opportunities to grow different crops. I want to make sure everyone here is clear. I do chair the house biofuel caucus. It is my bill within the Inflation Reduction Act to bring ethanol across the country yearround. That has already always been a priority for me. Now we will move onto to our lightning round. We will ask you a short question. Give us a quick answer for each. Who is the current politician you most admire . Rep. Axne oh boy. I dont even think about stuff like this. Let me say, lois frankel in the house with me. She cares about the people that work there. She was always helping make our days better. Sen. Nunn i was going to say joe biden. My favorite guy is don bacon, my wing commander, a congressman out of omaha. When i was a young lieutenant, she he taught us how to fly jets. He has been a good mentor as a father, and a brother in arms. Sen. Nunn, what do you admire about your opponent . Anybody sen. Nunn anybody who puts their name on the ballot it takes a lot of courage. I salute everybody at all levels. I hope you look down the ballot and recognize it takes a lot to do that. Rep. Axne, what do you admire about your opponent . Rep. Axne the same thing. Stepping up is incredibly difficult, especially as a parent. There is a lot to juggle and i know how difficult it is to manage family and running for the seat. I give him kudos for that, because its not easy. Before we go, each candidate will have 60 seconds to talk. We drew names out of a hat to determine the speaking order. Sen. Nunn thank you everybody in iowa joining us tonight. I have been honored to have the opportunity to serve this country both from the battlefield and state house and hopefully have you be my next boss as we had to congress. But the reality is now, we work hard. Like you, we are experiencing a lot of difficulty. When washington, d. C. Turns its back on the midwest and lets inflation run out of control through bad policy choices, when washington, d. C. Turns its back on Law Enforcement and we have Law Enforcement officers here who take time in our community do to make it a priority, thats the right thing to do. When we have an Energy Independence that two years ago was the envy of the world and we shut it down for a onesizefitsall government solution we made it harder for every iowan to have a better life. As we march forward, i will work every day to bring down inflation by spending less and make sure we support Law Enforcement and serve you in congress. Thank you for the honor of being here tonight. Rep. Axne thank you stacy, eric, kcci and everyone here tonight and those of you watching. For the last four years i had the honor and privilege of serving iowa in washington, going out into the district, listening to the concerns and bringing those back to congress to work on the issues important to you. By putting money in your pockets, introducing the Inflation Reduction Act, lowering the cost for insulin to 35 per month, capping outofpocket expenses for seniors prescription drugs at 2000 per year. Infrastructure, fixing derelict bridges, connecting every person to broadband, making sure we have clean Drinking Water for kids. I hope this get through covid, kept mainstreet alive. Our kids in schools, and money in your pockets. There is more to do. Folks, what you get with me is what you see. What you get with him, is somebody that will say anything and do anything to get elected. What we need in washington are honest, transparent people that will always stand up for you. That is who i am and i ask for your vote. We think both candidates for i was third Congressional District for spending time with us on the same stage in front of voters and constituents. We appreciate you being with us tonight. Thank you for watching. Thank you to the state Historical Building for hosting us this evening. If you missed any of tonights debate, watch it online at kcci.
