And you hope now that 2015s we get a respite for us. Our hearts are with the families i know very few people going to comedy as an act of courage namely because it shouldnt have to be that. It shouldnt be an act of courage it should be taken as established law. But those guys, they were killed for their cartoons. Most part the legislators and journalists institutions that we gather are not in any way the enemy. For however frustrating or outraged can become go back and forth a conversation amongst those on lets call it team civilly sake. This time of violence only clarifies that but of course, of course our goal tonight is not to make sense of this because there is no sense to be made of this. Our goal as it is always is to keep calm and carry on or whatever version of that saying is in your dorm room. We spend the majority of our day honestly in shock and grief but also searching for a segue. Back in to a program such as this. And you may not believe it but we believe that we have found it, i. T. A story that combines difficulty of ridding society of these types of persistent, caustic ideologies, it combines that with a creature that has four stomachs. We move forward tonight with a segment we call nazi cows. A british farmer has had to put down most of his cattle herd because apparently they were too aggressive. Jon that is not detailed by originally the master race of of belligerent bovines. [ laughter ] if you search long enough in a pile of horse [bleep] our going to find a horse. Nazi cows. By the way is that the most evocative image for this story . There you go. Comedy nazi cows cows who are nazis by the way were not just calling these nazi cows the way seinfeld. Seinfeld had soup nazi and linda in h. R. Is a real nazi. These cows are actual nazis. Created byerman want an iconic and aggressive breed which could row freely arose europe like the oroches of old. Herman goering nazi cows which sounds like the absolute worst possible knockoff of the teenage mutant ninja turtles. [ laughter ] now you may assume nazi cows like all cows, would be easy to get rid of. Theyre sleeping send in tip team six. What im saying they are not going down without a filed. If i was standing here more aggressive ones in the field they could see me they would come across try to kill you. Try to kill you . Absolutely, yes. Every intention of wiping you from the face of this earth. Thats how delusional these types of ideologies were. Nazis were defeated its 2015 theyre in a pen, theyre [bleep] cows. And they still think they can win the war. What diabolical scheme did hitler have planned for these ubermooonsches . The idea of greek heroes like hercules wrestling the oroxe is sort of writ large in classical mytholgy and the nazis wanted a part of that. You know they wanted the nazi supermen to be able, to sort of, you know best themselves against these kind of creatures in a sort of post war germany. Jon i dont know if anyone has pointed this out before, but the nazis were a little cuckoo. Lets breed a race of super cows is crazy. Lets breed a race of super cows so we can wrestle them is a whole other planet of nuts. Now we noachianing tatum would be starring in a very different movie. The important thing is [ laughter ] for more youll see where were going with this. For more on these irrationally violent cows we go to senior mooslum. What is going on here . Well, jon, the way i see it the cows because were talking about cows, right . Are by nature peaceful animals. You get these crazy ones with this violent outdated ideology. Jon how do you explain that . Why is my job to explain that . Why do i have to answer for every cow out there . Okay . I dont like nazi cows any more than you do jon. Jon were talking about cows. Yes. Jon this type of story must be tough on the vast majority of the world. Who are not nazi cows just sit there live their lives and chew their cud. Its [bleep] who is responsibility to argue against these fanatical boosts . Is it mine . Am i being a coward . Jon is that where the word comes from . Im pretty sure. Jon the acts perpetrated by these cows are horrifying. But this is taking place in europe. We have to be concerned here in the states . Jon, nazi cows are attacking people. Does it matter where its happening or why . Sure. Nazi cows always have an excuse for why they do the crazy things they do, oh, you pulled my udder too hard. Oh the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Or if england hadnt milked us in 1919. You cannot reason with them. You cannot apiece them. Theyre nazis. And cows. Theyre nazi cows. Jon i see. Perhaps in this situation the world just has to stand together. Vast majority of us and just say, bad cow. Dont do that. Right. Only solace from what i understand i do believe this fight is winnable. If youre wondering what happened to the aggressive cattle that had to be destroyed the answer is burgers and sausages. Jon max makes you feel bad for them. Not really. Only pizza huts new menu finally gives crust the flavor it so rightfully deserves. Get any one of ten new crust flavors for free. Salt lake city utah has a plan that will blow your mind, as daily shows hasan minhaj reports new ways are being introduced because of banning because of body odor. Fining them and arresting them for sitting down. Salt lake city, utah, taken the next step by removing the homeless from their streets all together. Have you seen any Homeless People . Hope. Single person living in Cardboard Box . No sorry. Where the hell did they put everybody . To find out i sat down with the director of this initiative lloyd pendleton. We have reduced our Homeless Count by 70 since 2005. Did you hide them underground . We did not hide them underground. Did you convert from mormon to gay. We did not convert them from mormon to gay or gay to mormon. How did they do it this. By giving homes to Homeless People. You did what . Gave homes to the homeless. Yes, its simple. You give them housing. You end homelessness. Thats right. Part of program called housing first, Salt Lake City is just giving apartments to the homeless. You gave a homeless person a home. Okay, you gave a home to the homeless person that still makes them homeless. No. Because when youre homeless you do not have a home. Thats what the word means. Im going to be honest that makes more sense than what youre saying. You may think, but it adds up to us. Sure. Giving homeless home homes sounds like a good idea just like feeding people and providing health care sounds like a good idea. But everyone knows we just cant afford it. 22 of americans are currently receiving some kind of government entitlement, that is 67 million people. Truth is, we cant afford it. What do all of these handouts cost a good hard working people of utah . Costs about 12,000 per person. There you go. Compared with 20,000 a year on the streets. Wait, what . We give them is more effective and efficient than the emergency system, merge enhe see room visits, emt runs and jail time. I feel like youre just giving them a home. Yes. Okay, it makes financial sense. But the fact is its going to make them lazy. They disincentivise to you get off welfare. Ill get food, why would i work . Why would i work when the government pays me not to work . Why indeed . What you guys are doing is incentivizing mooching. We dont see them as moochers. We see them as people in great need of some support to fulfill their lives. Its almost aspen dell ton sees the poor and homeless as actual people. This is getting complicated i went to visit one of these moochers and their mereatorium. Has given me a job. What that job i can move back to chicago and be with my son, my daughter, my family. Do you see how this is a slippery slope . Doesnt it seem that youre totally dependent now on four walls average roof over your head . Youre never going to want to sleep on concrete ever again. Why would i want to sleep on concrete. I didnt want to do it when i was out there. If you just give people these apartments the next thing you know he Everyone Wants to be poor. No one wants to be poor. Everybody needs a handsome time. This is getting a bit confusing. If youre a poor person you are supposed to look like this. But this guy has a job an apartment, general selfesteem. The image we have of poor people are starving living in squall or really is not accurate. Many have things 99 of them have refrigerator. 81 have a microwave. 78 have air conditioning. What . Theyre eating food thats been chilled . And then heated . Theyre not supposed to be like us. They gave you a panini press . I think i bought that. Now im totally lost. We have given them a home. Hes gotten his life back together hes become a productive member of society. And its costing us less . Whats the catch . What is the catch. There has to be a catch. Like the homeless time shares. Dont have to have a time share fee every year very simple. You work. If you see a home l person dont feel bad. Know that they can get a second shot at life all they have to do is live in utah. [ applause ] jon well be right back. Sorry. Your morning could use a hand. Taco bells steak and egg a. M. Crunchwrap with a hash brown inside. A whole breakfast in one hand. [ applause ] jon welcome back my guest director of latest film is selma. You are deliberately you are going to be arrested. I promise you. Sheriff access to the Registration Office which is our legal right. You know damn well there is. Yall have to wait. No, sir, were go in the front. Were going to wait right here. Segregation is now illegal in this country, sir. Jon please welcome ava duvernay. [ applause ] thank you for being here. First of all, congratulations. Thank you. Jon this is such a beautiful film. And so well done. Im glad you think so. Jon absolutely. I was incredibly moved. The lead performance david oyelowo. Its oyelowo. Jon remarkable. Hes amazing. You got to know the name this guy is going places. Jon hes already gone places in the film. How does it feel to present a story like this now that racism is over . [ laughter ] to be able to present it as a part of our learned and shared history. Thats right. Jon that we no longer deal with. Thats right. Interesting because we opened the film with king accepting the nobel prize a time when hes at the height of his powers. And at that time if you read commentary and column talking how we have gotten passed racism because he got nobel prize. This is thick is not new. The idea that that one achieve ment just cleans the slate for everything else. Its interesting. Jon very interesting the way that you portrayed because it humanizes him to a large extent in that he chose certain moments for their cinematic quality at times. He had to be careful and cautious about what moments could represent his highest aspiration. You show him suffering as he watches individuals be punished for that choice. During the times were the first time that people were under kings watch. Three people who lost their lives doing the summer campaign. That was a great weight upon him. That he was carrying. Nonviolent periods resulting in violent deaths. Thats why this time in history is so right, so robust for exploration. Jon you know, the big controversy that Lyndon Baines johnson is not enough of a hero in this movie. Doing it surprise you because in the film, to be honest with you when i read the controversy i expected the film for him to be villain. He is in no way that. Hes a politician. Im a little baffled now. Im doing the same thing. Literally people cheer in the theaters for lbj at the end of it. Im a little baffled as to what the challenges are. Everyone has right to their opinion. Bottom line we dont paint anyone as a saint or a sinner. Jon tell me about yours steam for dr. King after going through this process, does it enanswer it in any way . Were there sobering moments to it. Ultimately what is your feeling . I think my feeling before was that i thought i knew him. And i was comfortable with what that was was very compartmentalized. A brave man, courageous man, but not really a man, really an idea. He had a dream he lived he died. Thats what people understand about him and hes a radical, charismatic, a dynamic, he was a strategist, he was a tactician, he was a prankster, he had ego he was like me, hes like you. And i gained so much you dont have an ego . Jon when you said like Martin Luther king, like you, no, i dont i would argue jon ill give you that. I would argue that he is. He was just a brother from atlanta that got swept up in history was able to step in to that greatness. Truly he was a human being thats what we try to do. Jon you talk about when it starts out where hes stepping on to the stage of the nobel ceremony and uniform courtable with the trappings of this new found and worried, how it will make him appear. You never sort of think of that aspect of him in the third person going, i represent this, i can no longer be this. Thats right. Jon he came to see himself as a mythological creature, a figure as well. He knew what he meant to people. On both sides of it. For folks that were not steep in the culture of people 6 color it was safety for him. Some of the saw dangerous but not as dangerous as malcolm x. Jon how thats portrayed with lyndon johnson. If we dont let dr. King look for option. Its an interesting ideas in there. I would invite people not to based on the challenges that a few people who are supposed to be the custodians of one man are riling up. I think there is a lot of good. Jon its moving. And complex. And narrative Lyndon Baines johnson is the least interesting, its the people that did that march is about their courage and struggle. Its so beautiful. Im glad you like it. Jon congratulations. Really lovely work. Thank you. Jon selma is in theaters everywhere on friday. Ava duvernay. [ applause ] you pay for you data every month. So why does your carrier take back what you dont use . Its your data. Now at tmobile, all your unused data rolls forward to the next month. And well even get you started with 10gb of free 4g lte data. Ah, push it. Push it. P. Push it real good ow oooh baby baby. Baby baby. If youre saltnpepa, you tell people to push it. Push it real good. Its what you do. Ah. Push it.
