Were you convinced it was still the right place to be searching off the west coast of australia, where you were . It is very much very close and expert analysis from the satellite data with the aircraft, the socalled act. It will be found close. We have a high degree of confidence in the search area and the people and equipment we are using to search that area. We are using our extensive resources to cover this story like only cnn can with our reporters and experts. They are spread around the world. Lets begin on reunion island in the indian ocean 450 miles off the madagascar coast. We have been gathering details. Robin, what is the latest . What can you tell us . Reporter wolf, its nighttime here in reunion. Its just got to 9 00 p. M. Local time. The search has been suspended because theres not a lot to see in the dark. They were using at least one helicopter to fly up and down the beaches near where the plane debris was found, if it doesnt turn out to be what everyone assumes it is at this point. A piece of a flaperon or a piece of the boeing 777 that is missing. Wolf, as i said, one helicopter flying up and down the beach. Also, police asking locals to come forward if they have seen similar pieces of debris floating in recent days, as well as to keep their eyes on the horizon searching for more debris. We are expecting a malaysian vessel to come here, according to the malaysian Prime Minister to help the search and rescue or Recovery Efforts in the coming days. Robin, how remote is this beach area where you are on reunion island . Theres a lot of hope other undiscovered wreckage could be found. Reporter it is very remote. The closest island is madagascar, they are remote in themselves. Thats why its taken investigators so long to get here. Malaysian investigators due to arrive tomorrow according to the malaysians themselves. The whole operation has taken quite a while to get off its feet because of how far away everything is. The island is volcanic so even the beaches are difficult to access. Getting to the beach where this piece of debris was found, you have to walk a long time along the rocks. Its useful to use a helicopter that can fly up and down. It is difficult to get there by foot and sometimes dangerous. Thank you very much. Malaysia, france, australia, they are all involved in the search of mh 370. Who is in charge . Renee is joining us now. Do we know who is actually taking the lead in this investigation right now . Because of aviation and International Aviation laws, we know the malaysian authority, they have the lead in the investigation. They are the ones who essenti essentially make this decision to send this piece of a wing to a specific lab. You said off the top, it looks like things are moving towards france. This piece will be sent to a lab there. Wolf, i have been on the phone all morning talking to some sources. Yeday, the initial e in the difo assessment and the wording used is looking at the photo and looking at the images seen there on the screen, they believe this looked like a part of a 777. Today, the language is a bit stronger. They say they see a component number that correlates with a 777 part. That is more tangible. That is evidence that says, look, not only does it look like it, it has a number on it that makes them believe this is a 777. This component number is on this flaperon or whatever its called, this piece of this wing. When they build this plane, that number is basically installed on this part of the wing . As its been described to us, boeing will oftentimes, you are looking at a stencil, a local newspaper published a picture of the number we are talking about here. Oftentimes, boeing will stencil in a number on the different components of the different parts of the aircraft. We were able to get hold of the maintenance manual. Its telling here. This is new. Literally, before we got on the air, we were able to find the page in the maintenance manual that corresponds to this individual part, the flaperon. And the number in the maintenance manual matches the number thats been published on these websites. Yet, another piece of evidence here that makes it look like this is, indeed, a part of a 777. A part of a 777. They havent necessarily tharks number 657bb, is the component number. Thats on all flaperons for all 777s or just this particular Malaysian Airlines flight 370 777 . Say you get something from the store and you have to put it together. You get an image that looks similar to what you saw on the screen there. To put it together you see part one, part two and part three. You use the numbers to affix whatever it is you are putting together. Its similar to that. You will have this maintenance manual with specific numbers that correlate to specific parts of the aircraft. Thats what we are looking at. At this point, we are seeing two numbers, the one that is found on the actual debris matching up with the number we see in the maintenance manual, which is, again, another layer. No one has come out and said this is mh370. But, you know, behind the scenes when you talk to people, you say, number one, you know theres only one 777 missing in this section of the world. If this is indeed the 777, i guess it begs the question, well, if its not mh370, what other aircraft would it be . The clues are adding up that this is the real deal. Well wait for the official word. Families and friends of mh370, passengers and crew, they have wondered for more than a year what happened to their loved ones. Sar ra spoke with ac 360s anderson cooper. She explained what it would mean to her if the wreckage proves to be from flight 370. If, ultimately, this is a piece of the wing, then that little thread of hope i have been holding on to will have to break. And reality will have to take over. But, yeah, up until now, i and most of the family members continued to believe that until we have a body, we cant we cant give up hoping they will still come back. They could be almost anywhere, you know, on the shore of the indian ocean, off india, off ethiopia, anywhere around there. The way the currents flow, is going to be very, very difficult to trace it back and pinpoint a position, unfortunately. Mary, even if they do a full discovery and examination of the part, the flaperon thats part of the wings plane, can they determine, based on that alone, whether the plane crashed due to mechanical error or foul play in. No, they can get a good idea of the force exerted on the plane when it hit the water. The size of the piece suggests it didnt fall. The pieces on the accidents like that that i have worked are very small. Everyone knows what the image of german wings wreckage looks like. They have a clue as to the configuration of the plane when it hit the water, but, of course, not why it was in that situation. The investigators, there are a lot of them, tom, that are looking now. There are malaysian authorities, french authorities, boeing officials are taking a close look at all of this. Representatives from the u. S. Government. Are they working together . Are they coordinating australian officials or sort of a competition under way in. I dont think its a competition. How many people do you need to look at that piece of wing and figure it out . First of all, to look at the identification numbers and verify it is from mh 370 and how did it rip away from the main part of the wing. The skin of itself and the interior. Is there any indication of explosives, fire, chemical residue that indicates something bad happened to the plane in addition to crashing into the ocean. It is from that boeing 777, the mh370 plane, i assume the boeing experts are taking a close look at it, not necessarily in person, but the hidefinition video they are seeing, the photography, the still photos. They basically have a good idea this is, in fact, part of that plane, right . As far as i know, yeah. What other 777 could it be from . It should have a serial number on it as well, i suspect. Then they will be able to tell for sure. What is the difference between that component number we have seen now, 657bb and a serial number . Explain that difference. A component number could be the same number on 10,000 pieces that you manufacture. A serial number is unique to each individual one. So, with a serial number, they should be able to tell which plane it was from, which wing it was from, the history of it, when it was manufactured. Would this flaperon have, in addition to the component number a serial number on that . I believe so, but im not knowledgeable on exactly that part and where it would be or what it would look like as far as a serial number. Maybe it could have been washed off, mary, after 16 months at sea floating around, right . Probably not. I had the occasion to work on the crash in japan. Ten years later, there were still parts on the mountain and you can see the parts and serial numbers on those pieces. The numbers you are referring to would be on the inside as well. They are very unique. Only boeing and the manufacture of these parts for boeing can use those numbers. They will have definite confirmation with the combination of the numbers. You agree, tom . Absolutely. When parts are stamped into an aircraft of automobile parts, the stamping process compresses the molecules below the surface. If you try to scrape it away, they can examine it, determine what is below and whats been compre compressed. Good to know. Hopefully they will find that serial number. Reporter this piece of debris is about seven feet long, three to four feet wide and we are told by boeing, it is consistent with what they would expect to find on a 777. Engineers looked at this and see elements that match up to things they build. It could come from this plane. If you roll it around, i can show you Industry Analysts say it would be from the backside of the left wing over here. First match, its the right type of thing to be from the malaysia airplane. Its the right color, right condition. Its covered with barnacles. That suggests it could have been at sea for some 500 days. They have to look for identifiers, the serial numbers you find on a plane like this. This is from a seat cushion from another plane. If they find a serial number on the piece they found and it matches the malaysia airplane, thats it, it will be proof the plane definitively crashed and there wasnt some other strange thing that happened to it. Doesnt answer the question of how it wound up where it was. Remember, throughout this process, we have been talking about the search area being down at the end of the a long flight where the plane ran out of fuel, then went into the water somewhere off the coast of australia. The search areas have been over here. Why is this one piece way over there, some 2300 miles away . Well, could it have flown that direction . Could the theory be wrong and the line should be going straight to reunion island . Not likely. Honestly, this part that you are looking at, thats where it would have run out of fuel. More likely, our analysts say what you should be looking at are the ocean currents. The idea that it went down where they thought it did and over time, it has slowly washed along the currents and pushed over here toward reunion island. Thats why this is the spot where they found what may be, may be, the First Physical piece of proof about what happened to malaysia air flight. Tell us why you would defund, if you had your way, the entire organization. I think whats disturbing is a doctor talking about selling body parts. What is disturbing is a doctor talking about using ultrasound to manipulate the baby, turn it around so it comes out feet first to preserve organs to sell and crush the babys head. Its impossible not to picture in your mind what is going on with this. Im a parent. One of the first images i saw of my children was an ultrasound of them in the womb. We were excited about that. It is being used, maybe illegally to try to harvest organs. Everything else they do is done by Community Health centers, also. We fund 9,000 Community Health centers and theres only 600 to 700 planned parenthood centers. There are plenty of Government Centers that do everything planned parenthood says they do, but dont do abortions. They manipulate the baby to harvest or gans. I know prochoice people who are upset about this. Even hillary clinton, who is not sure when life begins, shes even disturbed by this. You have to realize, this is really disturbing a lot of people from all spectrums of life. Isnt there a way, senator, to fix this one part of planned parenthood . We have all seen that disturbing video. Planned parenthood says it was edited not accurately, they deny some of the major allegations against them. Why not try to fix the organization, from your perspective and allow the women to get the services they have relied on at these 800 clinics, planned parenthood clinics around the country. The thing is, we are doing that. We have doubled and tripled the number of funding for Community Health centers. There are plenty of places they can go. Planned parenthood is unnecessary for womens health. In my state, there are 65 Community Health centers for every one planned parenthood. There are plenty of places women can go to for free government provided health care. Theres no reason for the taxpayer to be involved in something so grizzly and ghastly that people from all walks of life are condemning this. You want to see the entire organization, including all the good things, from your perspective, that they do, you want to see this organization disappear, if you had your way, but at least not get federal funding . What i would do, i would say to planned parenthood, show the videos around the country of people sorting through arms, legs and kidneys and ask people to contribute to your orgization. It is free to get people to contribute to them. They can continue to do this. Im guessing, when people see people sifting through body parts that someone is then going to sell. I mean it is so, just gruesome that i think they are going to have trouble voluntarily getting people. Lets talk a little about key policy issues while i have a chance with you. Number one, the first thing we do is get the bad ones out. We have a lot of bad dudes, i say. You have a lot of really bad people here. They are in our prisons and clogging up our prisons. I want them to go back, not only to mexico, back to the country they are from and into their prison. Get the bad ones out. Then, we have a law. Right . You are supposed to come. I would get people out and have an expedited way of getting them back to the country so they can be legal. You are on the record, as you know senator, saying the 11 million who are already here undocumented immigrants are never going home, dont need to be sent home. I would incorporate them into Society Giving them work visas and making them taxpayers. Would you allow those who are tax paying, lawabiding to have a pathway to u. S. Citizenship . I think what i would start with, first of all, is securing the border so we dont have illegal immigration. Itis been needed 20 or 30 years. We had republican and democrat president s refuse to secure the borders. You have to secure the border. Once the border is secure if you are honest, not a criminal, here for the american dream, which is vast majority of people are, yes, we can find work visas for you. For example, theres a grain of truth in what you are hearing from other folks in the sense that we have to do criminal background checks on everybody who came here illegally. Then we have to decide who are legitimate people seeking the american dream, legitimately want to work and what we have to do is have a Work Visa Program that works. The farmers in my state use the Work Visa Program, but they tell me it is broken, cup ber some and takes months to get the paperwork done. Certainly, we can figure out how to do it online, get background checks and find out who is in this country with good intentions. I dont foresee a time where theres going to be a mass round up of 11 million people. I think what we need to do is figure out how to secure the border and get a good, legal, immigration system working in our country. They would have legal status, assuming it works out. Secure the border, get legal status. Assuming they are doing all the right things and they are working hard, would they be eligible for u. S. Citizenship after a lengthy process . This was the big debate we had, you know, with the immigration bill and i ended up opposing it. Part of the reason is we created a new pathway to citizenship. I dont think there should be a new pathway to citizenship. Their children are becoming citizen. If you break the law coming in, your your ward shouldnt be around the world but its not the opposite. Its somewhere in between. I dont think its roundsing you up and putting you in camps but, hey, heres a reward because citizens of the greatest country in the world after you broke the law. I think the real answer is, secure the border and lets stop this once and for all allowing mass mig interrogation without any kind of rules at the border. And so i do believe that we have to have an organized border and we havent done a good job. The latest University Poll has donald trump, look at this, at 20 . Scott walker, 13, jeb bush, 10. Youre down with 6 with a few others there. You see them. Why is he doing so well right now, donald trump . Television works, wolf. If you would give some other candidates time from 8 00 in the morning until 8 00 at night all day long for three weeks, im guessing other candidates might rise as well. For example, some people are hearing about one candidate all the time. Very few people know that ive offered a tax code that you can fill out your tax return on one page at 14. 5 . If i had every Network Going gaga over that, i think we could get ours to rise as well. I think this is a temporary sort of loss of sense tea but were going to come back to our senses and look for somebody serious at some point. The Obama Administration is pulling out all stops to bring the lawmaker on board. Secretary of state john kerry has been testifying before various committees up on the hill. President obama is reaching out to a whole lot of folks. I want to discuss what is going on with my next two guests. Joining us, democratic congressman dan kilby and john lippert. John, you have a unique perspective because you were among the americans held hostage in iran for 444 days, as a lot of us remember. Indeed. Thank you for remembering. Its been 36 years now. I want to talk to you about that as well. Congressman, your efforts to get amir hekmati who is now being held in iran, a former u. S. Marine, is there any movement or hope for optimism . I think in the space of the last few weeks there have been more discussions. We know that the administration has continued to press for their release. Ive spoken to secretary kerry, met with the president last night at the white house to discuss this. Im confident that the administration continues to press for their release and we have to be cautious but i have hope that we may be able to resolve this. Despite the fact that amir hekmati and other americans are being held in iran, youre announcing your support for the Iran Nuclear Deal . I am. I maintain that we should keep the two questions separate. But in the final judgment, i dont see a path forward thats less treacherous than taking this deal. There are holes in every negotiation. This is the better path for us. And i actually think it has the value of being a more certain path for the americans being held. Youre with the president on this one . I am. John, where do you stand, given your unique perspective after being held in iran for 444 days. Give us your perspective on what is going on. I agree with the congressman. I would love to see the other people be free and back with their families as soon as possible. These are hard issues but the nuclear deal, thats the nuclear deal. Right. And thats what it is. And we did not deliberately did not mix these other issues. Was that a mistake . No. If you negotiate about everything, wolf, you agree on nothing. Because the argument has been made and youve heard it many times, congressman, that they are going to get tens and thousands of billions of dollars of sanctions relief flowing into their economy. The least they could have done is let these three americans, maybe four, Robert Levinson is still being held there as well to let these four out. Clearly, eastern shouiran sh the four. We should Never Exchange their freedom for either tens and billions of dollars or con investigations in the nuclear deal. The onus is on iran and if they ask for legitimacy on the global stage, they will release these americans and soon. John, you were one of the americans held for 444 days at the u. S. Embassy in tehran. Eventually you were released. Do you believe the iranians will release these four americans . They will. But its a process that plays out inside their own political system. Its very tough to read. This is not helping them at all but there are elements within iranian politics that simply dont care. And for their own reasons are holding them. The revolutionary guard and fundamentalist . Yes. So you see a real split within iran between the more moderate and less moderate . Absolutely. We were part of that whole process as well 36 years ago. Back in 1979, 1980. A lot of us remember that. Your bottom line right now and i know youve been in touch with amir hekmatis family. They live in your district. Maybe the iranians will wise up and let these americans go . They should. They have to understand that continuing to hold these americans is a liability to them. We should move forward on this agreement because i think it makes the world safer but eastern needs to understand, if they really want to be legitimate in the world, they cant hold Political Prisoners and should take action right away. Do you think this is going to pass between the house and senate . Its hard to say. Most members are withholding judgment. My process was a bit accelerated because ive been involved in the easteiran question for so l. I think the democrats will primarily stand with the president and well be able to sustain president ial veto. John, you want the deal to go through as well.
