Dealing with for 200 years plus weve been pulling the bandaid off slowly and it hasnt been good for us. When i see a confederate soldier. I dont get goose bumps and feel all warm and fuzzy on it. I respect the fact that you do. All im saying is you cant force all of us to have the passion that some of you have about certain things. Our nick valencia is live in Columbia South carolina. Tell us nick where we stand on the vote right now . Brianna, i just spoke to state senator Marlin Kimpson who said the special senate that the senate was undertaking to debate this bill to remove the Confederate Flag from state grounds, they adjourned for caucus meetings where he says theyll try to get a handle on the photocount for both republicans and democrats and get a consensus on amendments. It will take a twothirds majority. Last week the post and courier issued a survey that suggested there are enough votes for this bill to be passed. But in our conversations with some lawmakers today, that may not be the case. Theres concern there may not be the vote there is. So this could very well turn out to be a dramatic week. Brianna . And what nick about this push for this to be up for a statewide vote . Where does that stand . Senator lee bright introduced that and were told that he may introduce an amendment, again, back to senator marlon kimpson. He called it a distraction and said the votes are not there for that to go forward. Brianna . Nick valencia in columbia. Thank you. Some say its a symbol of hate others say their heritage. Whatever side of the debate youre on one thing is for sure its divisive. It is not about the history. Its not about heritage. Its not about hate. Its about how to heal wounds that stretch back many many years. And most importantly its about the present and the future. It is part of our history. It needs to be respected in whatever way or honored in whatever way folks used to do. But as far as this state on this statehouse grounds, it isnt part of our future. Its part of our past and i think we feed to leave it at that. Joining me now we have Lonnie Randolph jr. , the president of the South Carolina naacp. Lonnie, the naacp has been boycotting South Carolina since 2000. What happens if the legislature votes to move the flag . What happens if it doesnt . Well if it doesnt, then of course, the sanctions will continue in South Carolina and i am hopeful, somewhat optimistic that this body will in 2015 decide to do something right for the state, not whats in the best interest of the legislators but think about the 4. 7 Million People that lived in the state 1. 7 million of them are africanamerican and its the right thing to do. Its mindboggling that at this point in the history of this country that we would still be fighting the war. This is unreal. 150 years after the war ended, which lets you know that tragic and traumatic things dont just end abruptly as forgiving does as people are supposed to forgive immediately after something happens. It shows you how much this issue has stayed with South Carolina our schools suffer because of the confederate mind seth because we educate them in a similar way that the confederacy did and they did not believe black children deserve to be educate sod we have a number of issues that today in 2015 are confederate in nature when it comes to the laws that are passed in this state. There are attacks on Voting Rights for citizens and things of that nature. Thats a confederate attitude because the confederacy didnt believe lonnie let me ask you. Thinking of this flag is it enough you think, to confine the flag to a museum . Do you think it needs to be banned outright . Well i dont want to damage what some of my friends in the General Assembly personally i dont see any place where it should fly. But this is one point where i will believe in a compromise. I think we can come up with a place a museum and an acceptable place in the museum for it to be but not a state property where it has strength and power by being part of the government and South Carolina knows that it is wrong. The thing to do is admit that you were wrong and lets fix this long sick problem that this state has had since 1788. Lonnie randolph jr. Thank you sorry, go on. Let me have you finish your thought. I was about to say remember now there arent too many things that South Carolina is first in. We were the first to secede from the union in 1820 eighth to come back in and the first, the first, to declare war against america. I dont want that to be something that South Carolina carries forever. We need to do better than that. We need to show if we are truly the country we say we are we should live it and act it. Lonnie thank you so much for joining us. Lonnie randolph jr. , with the South Carolina naacp. There is another big debate under way in this country, thats the debate over illegal immigration. And here is the headline. An undocumented mexican immigrant confessed to a reporter he shot and killed a 31yearold woman on a busy San Francisco pier. We come to find out the suspect had been deported from the u. S. Not once not twice, but five times and as dan simon tells us there is anger that this repeat flan was recently released from jail and back on to the streets. Did you shoot kate steinle, the lady down on pier 14 . Yes. Reporter confessing to homicide 45yearold Francisco Sanchez is behind bars in california this morning but he shouldnt be in the United States at all. Sanchez is an undocumented immigrant and repeat felon. The victim is 31yearold kate steinle, killed with a single gunshot to the chest at a popular San Francisco pier last wednesday. She was fighting gasping for every breath. Kates father who was with her at the time says no words were exchanged between sanchez and his daughter. Officials say this was a random act of violence. I have a little solace that i was with her but i also have overwhelming grooet for the moment she was shot. Sanchez has been deported five times to mexico. In a jailhouse interview with cnn affiliate kgo, he says the lure of a paycheck kept him returning. Im looking for a job in a restaurant or roofing, landscaping or reporter quickly seized upon by donald trump, the gop hopeful who made his inflammatory remarks about mexican immigrants said the tragic shooting is yet another example of why we must secure our border immediately. Sanchez was held on an outstanding drug charge in march but that charge was dropped and San Francisco officials said they had no legal basis to hold him. Under the citys socalled sanctuary law, they didnt transfer him back to immigration officials, either because there was no warrant or judicial order for his removal. So on april 15 sanchez was released. Im sorry. Includeing Kate Steinles family . Yeah. Donald trumps comments on immigration may be incendiary. It doesnt hurt his support. In a cnn orc poll conducted in june he was number two just behind jeb bush. But his gop rivals are speaking out, saying trump doesnt represent the views of the Republican Party. I think what he said was wrong. Yong it was inappropriate and i dont think it has any place in the campaign. Trump is wrong. Hes not a stupid guy so i dont assume he thinks that every mexican crossing the boarder is a rapist. So hes doing this to inflame and incite and get to draw attention. Donald trump does not represent the Republican Party. I was offended by his remarks. To paint with that broad a brush that donald trump did is i mean, hes going to have to defend those remarks. Honestly, donald trump needs no help from Mike Huckabee to get publicity. Hes doing a good job of that. Lets discuss this. Im joined by senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny and chief political analyst Gloria Borger. Trump made his remarks june 16 when he declared and i remember listening to them and thinking hu, that seems like that would be a problem. It percolated. It was a slow burn. Now you have republicans trying to not just distance themselves but slam him. Are they doing enough . Well, theyre starting to. At first they decided he was like the sort of crazy uncle in the attic that they didnt have to pay a lot of attention to. Ignore him a little bit like we dont have to deal with it. Hopefully hell go away. Then suddenly he sucked the oxygen out of the room. He was getting the publicity. He knew exactly what he was doing and they decided wait a minute we have to start using him as a foil which i think is a good idea and say we are not like donald trump to differentiate themselves because if any of them want to be a general election candidate they better do that. What if they had just from the get go used him as a foil instead of first distancing and ignoring but instead no matter how serious a candidate they thought or did not think he was, if they just hit him on it to make their point. In hindsight it would have given someone a leadership moment this very very large republican field. But the reality is why theyre talking about it is because were asking them about it. Some republican officials who are the wise people in the party are like this isnt good. Frankly, all of the candidates are sort of being drug into this. No one has been out front. Marco rubio has still only issued a short printed statement about this has not talked about it yet on camera. My guess is he will when hes in iowa campaigning this week. But the reality is no one has taken the lead. Theyre a lilt afraid of donald trump and they dont want to get in the mud with him but thats where they are. And Chris Christie in particular we have been joking about how watching christie take on trump would be payperview tv. But Chris Christie is very aware that he doesnt want to get into this kind of sit down and shut up contest with donald trump because it wont help him. He could be the big loser in this. To borrow a phrase from donald trump. So you have the comments that have hurt his brand but then you look at the polls and Donald Trumps doing pretty well. So you have the network, the first debate next week sorry, next month, and the Network Airing says 10 candidates were going to limit it. Looks like donald trump is on the stage. How does that work and how does that work for the republican brand and the rnc . Like what gloria said payperview. This will be a payperview moment if you interthis thing. But i think well see what the polls say now. Polls are always a lagging indicator. So we get them a couple days later. Well see if he remains as high as he has been. Im not so sure about that. But in a field these are national polls. Right. But in a field so large hes almost sure to be on the debate j the u. S. Math. So well be watching this debate in cleveland. And the irony is trump might be on that stage and christie might not be on that stage. Amazing. That would be an amazing sight. Gloria jeff stick around well talk more ahead. And coming up its been a bloody week end in chicago. At least seven People Killed another 40 injured. All of that in a span of just two days. So whats behind the violence . Well be discussing that later. Plus breaking news on the race for the white house. Hillary clinton is finally, finally taking questions from the national media. This is the First Time Since she announced that shes rubbing for president of the United States. Well have all of the details on that next. Big day . Ah, the usual. Moved some new cars. Breaking news the race for the white house. Hillary clinton has been keeping things small as she campaigns for president , small events in iowa and New Hampshire, mostly. Shes meeting voters, shes delivering her message and shes kept away from National Interviews until now. Shell be sitting down with me tomorrow for her First National tv interview. Back with me now are cnn chief political analyst Gloria Borger and senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny. Way to go brianna. Thank you very much. So this comes as Hillary Clinton is basefacing a bit of a i dont want to say a total challenge. Hes still well ahead in the polls but vermont senator Bernie Sanders has been rising in the polls. Hes been getting big crowds. Is this way shes starting to branch out now into interviews do you think . You know i think that theyve always had a plan and they were keeping it small and then they were doing a few local media and now i think the feeling probably is that it would be use to feel them. For example, shell probably want to take on donald trump, i would think, in her interview with you. She might want to talk about the differences between the way she will campaign and the republicans will campaign and start setting up that and maybe, maybe talk about Bernie Sanders a little bit, i would think. So its kind of a good time for them. I think she given her preference she probably would have have preferred to go all the way until the Iowa Caucuses in february without answering questions or talk about it. She said she didnt want a coronation and thats whatsshes not getting one. She know she is has to come out of the bubble wrap and start meeting voters and take the questions from reporters. This that will allow her to focus on her policy her ideas. Shes going to roll out a series of policy speeches next week so shes turning into a slightly different phase of her cam pawn that she wants to talk about why shes running for president. And well see more than what she is all about. I want to look at something her Communications Director general palmieri one of her top aides told the atlantic. By not doing National Interviews until now, were sacrificing the coverage, were pay a price for it. But in the near term she was gaining something, right . Yes, but you tend to look like youre not relatable, like people cant go near you. Youre keeping people at arms distance. So while the Republican Party is having this huge fight with donald trump in the middle of it and growing by leaps and bounds everyday and fighting each other over issues that the public clearly disagrees with on issues like immigration, she can take this opportunity to kind of be the serious adult in the room and look at that way to a reporter of some stature here and look that way and say to the viewing public im not like those folks. And not insignificant that shes doing it in iowa. Still doing this organizing small events. She wants to make the case that she is fighting for the Iowa Caucuses. We remember she got third place in there in tagt. Thats why shell be there tomorrow. But it comes at a slightly different moment. The fundraising crush is sort of over shes raise had had 45 million in this first period now its time to throw it back to the voters. That means taking some questions. And real quick. She its not just Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders in this race on the democratic side although it might seem that way. We saw Martin Omalley in iowa. Hes out there campaigning. He had some enthusiastic onlookers over the weekend. Hell be in New Hampshire coming up this week as well. It fis toor earl its far too early to limit this. But the voters need to hear from Hillary Clinton and thats what theyll be hearing in her interview with you. And theyll look for an alternative if they arent won over by her and to be won over they definitely need to hear from her. Gloria jeff thanks to both of you. You can see my interview with Hillary Clinton tomorrow 59 oclock p. M. Eastern on the situation room and at 8 00 p. M. Eastern on ac 360. A stunning vote in greece thats sending shock waves around the world. Richard quest is live in athens with that. Richard . Reporter after the break, ill tell you all about the vote, the new finance minister and why europe isnt necessarily going to play nice. It wouldnt make sense if you turned on something in one room and it turned on everywhere else. But thats exactly how traditional cooling and Heating Systems work. So you pay more than you should. But Mitsubishi Electric systems give you a better way. With no waste and lower energy bills. Control temperatures precisely in one or every room. With no new ductwork. So everyone can enjoy ultimate personal comfort. Mitsubishi electric cooling and heating. Make comfort personal. In greece voters gave a resounding no to an ongoing bailout to its European Partners raising the Prospect Country could face a work Economic Disaster and this has investors around the world concerned, including right here in the u. S. There you see the dow if we can bring it up. Its down about 77 points at this point. But the greek vote it isnt so simple because the countrys Prime Minister says that hes ready to go back to the negotiating table in the hopes of Getting Better terms on a new agreement. The countrys finance minister whod been very vocal in his dislike for european creditors resigned saying it could help pave the way for a new deal. Cnns Richard Quest is in athens. Richard, this vote basically broke down 6040 for the no side right . This is such a resounding vote. Why did we see it go down this way . It went down this way because the people in greece are angry. They are tired. They are in despair and they are looking for a way out of their economic problems. The size and magnitude was something extraordinary. None of us have foreseen it happening. Certainly no one in greece. Now the finance minister has gone. There are new talks to be held. Greece has to come up with new proposals to take the brussels to the europeans tomorrow. But the reality is and this is where it gets unbelievably tricky the banks are still closed theres still not enough money here and no one can see an easy way out because, brianna, the last week of economic turmoil closedback banks, closed stock markets, has made a bad situation much worse. One french politician called this a human catastrophe. But on the other hand theres no denying this was a big show of support for the greek Prime Minister. Is there any thought he can parlay this into getting a better bailout deal . Thiss entirely his strategy. That is it in a nutshell. He said to the people of greece give me a no vote, that will show i can go to brussels i can go to our eurozone partners and say no more austerity, give me debt relief i have my people behind me. The only problem with that is that as Angela Merkel of germany says there are 18 other democracies who also have a say. So tonight we have merkel going to paris to visit president hollande there talking at the moment. We have the euro group, we have the ecb, the European Central bank. Everybody is talking, talking, talking. But what theyre talking about is the what happens when tsipras, the greek Prime Minister goes tomorrow because he has to go with proposals that they find even gauchable, otherwise its game over. Richard quest in athens thank you so much. In other news its a homecoming of sorts pope francis back in his native south america and the reception, as you can imagine, is huge. On the popes first full day in ecuador, more than a million turned out to celebrate mass with him in the port city of guayaquil. Theologians say francis is trying to breathe new life in the Catholic Church there. Its suffered a significant decline in numbers. During his week long visit, the pope will make stops in bolivia and paraguay. Rosa flores is in quito, ecuador. Looks like an amazing response there, rosa. Tell us about it. This is very emotional for the ecuadorian people. The first latin american pope makes the decision to come to latin america but for the first time because the first time he was here back in 2013 that was the decision of Pope Benedict xvi. So this is showing that the pope pope francis, has chosen these three countries as his first latin american trip and its by no mission stake, brianna, that he chose three of the countries with the highest poverty rates, with the largest indigenous population and given his recent encyclical, it all makes sense because his papal theology is to evangelize from the margins where people are hurting, where you find the poor, the elderly, the sick and all of those folks are included in his itinerary during his visit to latin america and so during these masses where were expecting him to speak in spanish in his native tongue and to speak from the heart in these homilyies homilies. Were also expecting him to make some of the points he made in his encyclical and a lot of these people in these countries on the margins will probably suffer Climate Change a lot quicker, a lot sooner than developed countries. So hes here as the leader of the Catholic Church as pontiff but also as their fellow latin american who is coming home to his home continent and weve seen them embrace children embrace women and were going to see that continue throughout the day. One other thing that i should point out, brianna, is that his visit is all about inclusion. In these countries with large indigenous populations, some of these folks dont speak spanish and so during the mass today, for example, were expecting bible readings that will be translated into these dialects. Chants that are native to these areas will be included. Its all part of the message of inclusion, brianna because like you said when the number of faithful are dwindling, you have to bring them in somehow. If someone can, its probably pope francis. Yeah he sure can, rosa flores in quito, ecuador. Thanks so much for your report. The pope isnt done with his International Travels for the year. In september, he will pay a visit to cuba before heading to the u. S. With stops planned in philadelphia new york and washington. The pope is expected to meet with president obama and hes also expected to address congress. Coming up, a bloody holiday week end in the nations third biggest city. And try to make sure this doesnt happen to other parents, that they are not sitting in the seats like you two. Well with the foundation we are trying to prevent kids from going down that same road. We have tried. Were still trying and were not going to give up. We still have a long road to go. And that is evidently after this weekend we definitely see that we are our work is hardly done. What are your goals moving forward, cleopatra, reaching out with other families and young people . In the case of padea, she was a bystander. Apparently the gunman wasnt aiming for her. She wasnt the target. How do you reach out to people and try to change this when the killing is indiscriminate . Well what is true is much like many of the victims over this weekend was not the intended target. And the issue is that that is the face of violence. The people that are dying are not part of the crime itself. You know the other issue. You know we need to to figure out what to do because this issue of violence is going to stay. Its not going to decrease. Unfortunately, were dealing with kids who are of the mindset that having a gun and shooting someone is the way to go. When you know if i have an issue with you, i may fight you, we may live and possibly have lunch. Today it seems everyones beef its so deep that Everyone Needs to die and its unfortunate because they dont understand the longterm effect its having with families. One of our biggest struggles is keeping the guns out of the wrong hands. That seems to be one of the struggles weve had. Lobbying, to go with common sense gun laws and you know we our fight is just beginning. Right, but there also needs to be other regulations put out there as well. There needs to be an accountability because the guns arent just showing up. They are theyre coming to our neighborhoods, people are acquiring them. Our future, our children are being lost hand over fist and its unfortunate that yeah two years have gone past but theres a lifetime of mem these have been stolen from us. And thats where my heart break comes in and thats why i desire to reach out to families. Im not a First Responder for that with various organizations that do that. But im someone that likes to talk to other mothers and comfort them should they reach out to me as well. Certainly. And i sina than yall the button of hadiya on your shirt there. You talk about the heart break. But i will say i think even now in the nation when they think of your daughter for the years she had ahead of her. How do you cope with your daughters death . We go day by day. Its extremely hard. We have good days and very bad days. But theres not a day that goes by that were not celebrating the life she had and celebrating her presence in our lives. Im unapologetic in my attempt to live because we have to figure out how to live the life that the unplanned life we have now. Especially with our 13yearold son. We have to do things to make his life bright and shine in the memory of his sister. Its a big deal but from day to day, hour to hour you dont know what sort of emotional state you may find yourself in but sacrificially we put ourselves out here so that people can see that it is a chore dealing on this side of things and hopefully they will look at us see our pain and take a couple extra seconds to think about what it is theyll do and imthe pact it could have on their own families. We hope thats the case. Cleopatra, nathaniel pendleton, thank you for being with us. You have an Important Message and a personal one on this. Thank you. Thank you. Coming up president obama heads to the pentagon to talk about the fight against isis. Our terrorism analyst will weigh in on the battle against the terror group and the president s strategy. President obama is getting ready to those the pentagon for an update on the fight against isis. Hes meeting with the military leaders in the next hour after a major offensive over the weekend by Coalition Forces battling the terror group. The u. S. Led Coalition Forces unleashed a wave of air strikes against isis fighters in syria as well as iraq and among them were 18 strikes in raqqa, an isis stronghold in syria. With me to talk more about this we have our terrorism analyst phil mudd and paul cruickshank. I want to start with, you phil on this. What do you expect from this meeting with president obama at the pentagon . If you look at whats happened over the past year, if youre an optimist and nobody in washington on this issue appears to be youre saying the tempo is pretty high there are a lot of air strikes going on over the weekend. Were worried about isis threats to baghdad last year and going into this year. That doesnt look like it will happen but if you step back for a moment i think the conversation with the president is pretty simple. We have military capeablity in the region but there are fundamental political questions. How do we ally with an Iraqi Government that does not appear to bring in sunnis. Longterm problem the pentagon cant solve. Whats our end game for syria, finally, when it looks like a variety of forces both isis and antiisis are making slow progress against assad. Whats the end game . The whole reason isis was able to take hold, the u. S. Says, is because the iraqi Prime Minister wasnt inclusive in his government. So whats the point of sort of a allying with iraqi troops if the u. S. Isnt getting a political solution they say is so important . Whats the other alternative. They have to support the iraqis here. They have to build the sunni forces up particularly in anbar province. Isis have consolidated their control of anbar in recent weeks that take over over ramadi. Theres some consensus in washington that youll do much more to arm the sunni tribes in anbar and also to find ways to get their support, maybe briefcases full of dollars. Briefcases full of dollars. Thats what it has come down to. Has isis been weakened do you think . I dont think isis has been significantly weakened. They have a strong position in iraq. They still control mosul and syria. They also have a strong position and recently took patrol of palmyra and they are expanding in egypt and libya. The europeans are concerned about libya right now. Of course that gunman in that beach attack just a few days ago in tunisia is said by the tunisians to have trained in libya. Phil, many say the u. S. Has to do more. You dont agree with that . No, i dont buy that. Theres a confusion as to whether we want to support an Iraqi Government. We dont want to see isis roll through bigger portions of iraq. Thats different rather than isis poses a threat to new york or washington. I think people say we need to defeat isis and therefore we need to do more. I disagree. We dont need to defeat isis. We need to contain them and i think we are doing okay. Paul thank you so much. Phil really appreciate it. In other news is the optimism for a nuclear deal with iran fading . Joe clancy the head of the secret service has only been on the job for less than a year but hes already faced several scandals including an incident where a man was able to jump the fence and enter the white house before being taken down. Cnns jim acosta spoke with clancy and asked him about the incident. How did somebody jump that fence and get inside the white house. What is your short answer to that . Well it should not have happened and it wont happen again. That wont happen again . That wont happen again. Our people are very committed. I talk to the officers the agents ive been out to the field offices. This is not going to happen. Were committed to that. You can see more of jim acostas interview with joe costa on the situation room at 5 00 eastern. A selfimposed deadline for a final nuclear deal with iran is now just a day away. The u. S. And western allies are trying for an agreement that would prevent iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Secretary of state john kerry told reporters in vienna that it could still go either way. If we dont have a deal that if theres an unwillingness to move other things that are important, president obama has always said be prepared to walk away. Its not what everybody wants. We want an agreement. Our Global Affairs correspondent elise labott is joining me now. So you hear secretary kerry there. Were always trying to read the tea leaves on what they are saying. What do you think he means here . There was a big flurry of activity on friday. The iran foreign minister said weve never been so close to a deal and then there was some progress on sanctions over the weekend. There were a flurry of stories saying they are close, they are close. In fact they are not close. There has been a lot of progress but key issues remain unresolved. Secretary kerry was saying were moving ahead but its very possible that we dont get a deal. So what are the sticking points here . And are they just the same old sticking points . Have they made any incremental progress on some of these . Well they are making incremental progress on everything but some of the sticking points still remain and thats resolving lingering questions about irans Weapons Program and allowing international iaea inspectors to get into some of those sites, the pace of Irans Nuclear Development Activity and also a new wrinkle is now that they are coming to the end game here they are starting to look at how would you put a u. N. Security Council Resolution that spells all of this out and the iranians are saying if we have a new u. N. Resolution that gets rid of old ones we want to end the arms embargo. The closer they get the farther they are apart. Key decisions have to be made on both sides. What about the issue of sanctions and how quickly those would go away if they would be phased out . Of course eastern would hope that it would be gone the day after the agreement comes to be. Some are going to be suspended right away but its all in the wording here right . Because everything is down to words. I think that iran knows that everything is not going to be lifted right away but the u. S. And its partners know that they are going to have to show iran some benefits. Right now i think that there is going to be some suspension and then phased out but its all about getting an agreement that gets everything that the u. S. And its partners want in this agreement but also giving something to iran and making sure that iran can save face here and show that its not capitulating. If thats the art of diplomacy, finding the right words to spell out which they all know they are going to have to come down to. And for both sides, swallow in a way, a bitter pill perhaps. If this deadline they miss, what happens . I think its clear that they are going to miss it. Does tomorrow matter . The real deadline now is thursday july 9th which is when Congress Gets the deal. If they get it by thursday then congress only gets a 30day period to review. If not, it goes to 60 days. You heard senator bob corker the chairman of the Senate Foreign relation say its a good deal. Elise labott thank you so much. Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin starts right now. All right. Brianna keilar thank you so much. This is cnn. Im Brooke Baldwin. You think you may have heard all of the arguments with regard to the immigration debate but a tragic story out of Northern California has ignited conversations in a way that perhaps you may not have imagined.
