I think the republicans are abusing their power. They swagger around like theyre the ruling power that got a mandate from america and you will that stuff. Thats not true. One of the things thats crazy is we are living through something bizarre. Its not majority rule. Its one party, minority rule. Never forget this based on the 2016 popular vote, the republican candidate lost by nearly 3 million votes but with the Electoral College they handed the vote to donald trump any way. Okay, fine. In congress, the republicans have more seats than they deserve. How does that happen . Well, back in 2010, Midterm Election just like this year. The tea parties came tout in force and the democrats stayed home. The republicans got enough pow tore quietly reshape all these congressional districts in their favor. Worse still . The supreme court. The republican senators just stole obamas seat and gave it to trump. Now in all three branches of your government, the white house, the congress and supreme court, democrats have less power than we should have and the republicans have more. That does not sound like a democracy to me. Its very heartbreaking and the republicans are playing a very dangerous game. When you bend and break the rules so that anything goes, everything eventually goes, including respect for our institutions and then nobodys safe. And the democrats have to learn, too. Voting matters. Every time. Even Midterm Elections. Not voting on one day can hurt our communities for decades. So how do we get our democracy ba back . I need some hope. I need some help. Our next guest leads one of the most diverse cities in the world and just got reelected with 81 of the vote. So he might know how to win elections and bring people back together. What is your secret . How do you get people to come together across all these different lines . We got every race in the world in one city. They all get along. They all love you. What do you do here that should be happening in the rest of america . We need to spend less time on our twitter feed, on our facebook feed, and need to spend more time with each other. This city is full of midwesterners, immigrants, full of people from across the nation. I think when we have common work instead of people seeking to divide us, tell us what they are taking away, we can add to it. Why aint they all like you . 81 , do the math. That means almost 1 Million People didnt vote for me. What are you doing right . Here, we are focused on results. In washington, you have imaginary problems and they cant even solve the imaginary problems. Here we have real problems infrastructure, homelessness, traffic. I think people respect those of us collectively that are addressing real problems rather than the imaginary ones out of white house. When you say imaginary, what do you mean . Ones of invention. Separating children at the border . They create that had problem. They cant create it. As the grandson of an immigrant carried over the border right there in texas my grandmothers husband killed in the war. Imagine if he got snatched away. Here, we are concerned about our bills, housing, education, those things. Lets talk about it. You have problems that are tough to solve. On the one hand you have had the Ethnic Diversity that works for you, but you have an economic divide thats horrible. You have some of the richest people in the world and a loft homeless people. We have a national crisis. When it comes to the Mental Health crisis, we have folks in appalachia dying of drug overdose. People in l. A. Living in tents. Because we have no medical system. If we broke our leg, weld be treat. If we have on a diction, maybe 1 out of 10 of us would. Thats unacceptable. Here in l. A. We passed twole laws to stop homelessness. I would love to have a partner in the white house and i dont. You mentioned the white house. That opened the door for me. What kind of democrat do you think could win the democratic nation as the party moves further left and beat donald trump . That seeps like a houdini trick. Americans wake up and say, whos listening to me . Are they listening about my problems or concerned with themselves . Are democrats listened to americans that are sufficienting right now . Who are going through tough times, even in economic plenty as you mentioned theres tremendous anxiety. So first of all, one thats decent. We need decency. Someone who listens and third a problem solver. Thats not something democrats always said that theyre about. For instance right now theres a big push in the party on younger more activist leaning, says abolish i. C. E. You take that to iowa, does that reverbera reverberate . We need to reset the mission of i. C. E. , but the idea we wouldnt go after child traffickers or folks bringing pornography in this country or breaking laws we need that. The leadership has given them a mission thats making us less safe. To often we are taking the talk of donald trump on his terms. For instance, on ms13, its his fabulous whipping boy. Say ms13. The greatest battle force isnt donald trump its the lapd. We have cut crime in half here because we know how to do it right. Ill never been a politician over Police Officers and sbr interventionists. I like what you said. You made me feel good. Last fulltime i felt good there was a guy named barack obama running. You went to work for him. You talked to him and he gave you the chance to turn a job down. Tell me about that. He offered me a job to be like the city zar. Czar. He said, what do you think . I said, im thinking about running for mayor. He said, if you think you can win, you should do that. I called him the next week and said,u a bad salesman. Im going run for mayor. Runs for things you take a lot of risks. Theres a lot of personal sacrifices. But if you believe in your mission, whether its business or politics or just the activism you see in the country, we have to seize the day. Jump in. President obama taught me that. What advice is he giving you now . I know hes been talking to a lot of people. Ill respect that his counsel is private, but he wants us to win, but he wants us to get back to being a party of listeners, a party of decency, not where you are on the spectrum. We made Community College free here. Raised the minimum wage here. We have been fighting Climate Change here and around the country. Americans are looking for problem solvers. He said people could smell the midwest on me when i was in iowa. They saw the africanamerican man, but smelled the kansas mother. These false divides that have been peddled by so many people are not the america i know and that i love. Ive known you for a long time. What does your heart tell you about 2020 . My heart tells me wished all step up. Any patriot should be thinking about what they can do and what role can they play. Donald trump is not on the ballot now. As long as you can add something to the can have, you should stay in the conversation. Does that mean youre going run . I have no idea. I have to talk with family. Im exploring and looking at america and right siding when i go to a place like iowa its the number one wind state or solar city in the america. That should bring us together. Jobs in the Green Economy as you know dont just exist in the coastal areas. When i talk to folks in South Carolina they say its still not where we need to be in terms of police and community relations. As a mayor i think i can bring nothing that conversation. No mayor went from city hall to the white house. The last one who tried was rudy giuliani. To be clear, not a role model for me, in so many ways. But, yeah, no africanamerican had been elected until one was. No tv reality star until one is. I think the rules are off. I think americans want people who get things done. We have the largest port in america right here. 40 of the good that come into the this land are from our city. One of the largest airports. We know about homeland security. We have civil rights issues. Economic dwopt and trade. I want an america thats competing to win the future. Right now i see a white house wanting to rewind the clock to a time that exclude adda a lo at of us, and thats not possible. All this stuff sounds good, but you show up and theyre going say, this guy is a blue coast, middle of the bluest blue sang wear city. What the heck . What kind of reception are you getting showing up as a mayor of hollywood . Americans are i think we hunger to connect now. Thats what should give you hope and everybody watching here hope. I dont believe in the two americas they keep talking about, but there are two. Its washington and america. We have folks doing inventive work all across america waiting fortous connect with them. He said he wanted me to hear from the voters. Part because he was promising all that stuff around steel and all that stuff. I said, im not going the pass up a road trip with my cnn sparring buddy. I got in my van and headed to david as hometown of ambridge, pennsylvania. Pennsylvania. Broke my heart. Voted for trump so we are in beaver county, pennsylvania. This place has always been a little bit red. Went for romney by a few points. Went by trump for 20 points. Massive. About a dozen communities went from obama to trump. No better person to talk about about owl things trump and pennsylvania than david urban. The president is angry with the news media because theyre trying to delegitimatize his election. My man. My dad worked in a factory. My grandparents worked in a factory. My father worked in the steel mill. I was raised with people of color and didnt think of anything about it. I was raised in a small town too. There was a lot of hurt and genius thats out there thats not recognized. Then you get these rebellions, sanders or trump or black lives matter or tea party. Then people are baffled by it. Ambridge represents more than pennsylvania. It represents all the towns across america. The towns that had a thriving factory. They made something. They produced things here. Do people feel like its turning around for them . That they have been heard . How are people processing today . I think they feel like their voice is being heard. They dont expect the president to dlif a giant new steel factory on the ohio river . They realize thats not coming back. They recognize incremental change. The trump phenomenon is two things. One which seems noble, working folks who have been left out, screwed over, needing a champion, but the other is it seems like its marvelled in with all this toxic crap and division. Its unfortunate. We have talked about it before. The immigration debate has raged out of control on both sides. A lot of rhetoric that i think is not helpful. I just mean when i i put on the tv or the radio and i hear christian conservatives kind of poo pooing the fact that hes had these affairs and porn stars and that type of stuff. Doesnt that bother you that at least movement of people putting him on a pedestal no matter what . He said im here to represent the people of pittsburgh, not paris. I think the elect rat is willing to overlook a great deal just to have someone that finally hears them. They feel this president speaks to merchant street in ambridge than merchant street in venice. You mentioned pittsburgh. Pittsburgh voted for hillary. We were able to marshall enough people in the rest of the state. Another thing thats a heartbreaker is this opioid epidemic. I mean, especially in towns like this because you got morgues filling up. The Coroners Office is overworked because that many people are dying out here. Its a scourge on the community. Not just the minority community. Not the upper middle class. Not lower middle class. It transcends race and sews yo economic status. Its something our country can do a lot better on. Are the Trump Supporters going build a red wall . I spent time with a group of voters in beaver county, pennsylvania outside of pittsburgh where trump won by almost 1 points. Unfortunately, some of the divisive rhetoric that gets reported and some of the things the they say takes away from what the president does. The economy the tax cut is helping folks. What would it take for you to give republicans or trump a Second Chance . Seems like they need to reach across the aisle. If they could work on immigration that would be nice. I dont like to see children getting separated from their parents. How do you feel about that . I think they need to be here legally. They want us to roll out the red carpet to them. My taxpayer dollars are going out to feed them, health care. We need to take care of americans first. How many Homeless Children are in america . What about the black community that has one mother or one mother . What about the White Community that has one mother or one father. Exactly. With of to help everybody. How do you respond to that. President trump just recently said, lets not resolve it until after the election. Hes the one that doesnt want to resolve it. Thats not what they said. It is what he said. What he said is its obvious its not going to get solved so lets go Something Else and after the election try again. Why not . You have republicans running everything and you still cant resolve it . Why . Not running it as long as they cant make it 60 votes. Because they cant reach across the aisle. But you blame democrats for something they have no control over. I took 300 people down from western pennsylvania to washington, d. C. Im going ask you a question about 2020. Is donald trump going to be reelected . Hes playing to his base. Hell have those people always. For people that thought he would get into office and change and stop tweeting its almost like hes not going change and we need change. I think theres a group out there, my wife included you gave her up. Maybe you better not put that out there. That will not say in public that she supports him because she doesnt want to be harassed. I think there was a difference between the view you get of the party thats filters through washington and on the ground. Whats on the ground . I talked to about 100 people on the ground for the podcast the wilderness. I talked to you. Did one with obama voters in detroit. I did one for obama voter that is didnt vote in 2016. I didnt see a lot of love for donald trump. I saw a lot of people who probably could vote democrat but they just want to know what the partys for. They want to party to stand for something. They want the party to be unafraid. Its so weird because in 2 a 2008, ten years ago, we had everything. Democrats the white house. The senate, the house, we had a shot at the supreme court. We had hope. Now its 2018 ten years late interwe got nothing. Like literally nada. What happened . You were there. You seent it. What happened in the obama era that we lost all this stuff . One thing happened was there was a bit of a transactional view of politics after 2008. It was okay, im going come up for obama, work for obama, organize, hand him my vote and then im going to go back to my life and hes going fix everything. I think what we are learning now after donald trump became president is the business of democracy is an everyday struggle. Especially as democrats we have to be organizing and fighting and pays attention and working hard every sing day. It does seem as though thats right, but theres a fork in the road, tonally, tempermently. Michelle obama says go high. Mac seen waters says push back. Whos right . I think its okay for democrats to be angry on behalf of people for whats happened. I think whats the problem is if youre angry at your opponent all the time. Angry at donald trump all the time. People want passion for universal health care, jobs, infrastructure, the people i talk to wanted that. I talked to people who voted for donald trump who were like, why cant we have universal health care . The democrat candidates who we have seen that have won, whether its conner lam or cortez in a district in new york, what they have in common is theyre spending a hot of time talking about issuing people care about. Theyre talking about health care. Theyre talking about jobs. They are not spending a lot of time having the conversation that you often here on twitter, in washington, and so i think there is a difference between Democratic Candidates and the chatter that you hear. Lets talk about you a little bit. You built a phenomenal media success story. Are you concerned sometimes that in your attempt for you guys to try to pushback that you may be creating may be a part of the problem . You got fox news there, a bubble thats almost become a bunker. Some say youre billing a bubble thats becoming a bunker. How do you deal with that set of concerns . I dont think the problem with fox news is theres a bunch of people with conservative views on it. I think the problem is they lie all the time. Theres an ott of propaganda. The one thing i want to guard us against all the time is that we are telling the truth. When we make mistakes and its wrong, we say, we were wrong about that, and lets you know. But the reason we started with the media and pod save america is sometimes when the people watch the news, the news leaves you feeling helpless. Heres all the problems in the world, and off to commercial break. What we are trying to say is here are all the problems in the world. Heres what you can do to solve the problems. I know youre actively aggressively trying to get people in districts where they voted for Hillary Clinton but they got a republican congressman to do all the way blue. Is that what you mean by doing something . Yeah, all the great organizations that have sprouted up since the trump presidency, to the extent that we have an audience, we want to let the audience know, dont just listen and feel like this is therapy in the trump era, go do something about it. As we get closer to the election i think we are going to be doing more traveling across the country to make sure democrats will flip these cities. Sound like youre flying to get people good information, good facts and something to do about it. Thats not the buzz about the resistance. Usually this antitrump hysteria and main yarks not focused on voting but bob mueller and impeachment. Im got something to show you. Heres what i think about it. Hes brought us to the brink of nuclear war. Well, you have probably seen the adds. We need to impeach donald trump. Heard the rallying cries. Today i say impeach the president must be impeached. For democrats who are dreaming of quickly ousting donald trump, i got some bad news for you. Its going to be almost impossible to force him out of the oval office. Impeaching a president is extremely difficult. Its only happened twice in our history and Andrew Johnson and bill clinton both stayed in office any way. Its so hard it actually never happened. Richard nixon resigned before he could be impeached and that was at a time when plenty of willing republicans seemed willing to hold him accountable. They can be removed following impeachment in the house and senate for bribely, treason and other highcrime misdemeanors. The full house would have to pruf articles of impeachment. Then the process moves to the senate. 67 senators would have to rote for conviction. Right now, the republicans control the senate with two independently leaning republicans. Even if the democrats win every single seat thats up for grabs in november, they would still only have 46 seats. They would noon nine more votes. Who knows what kind of bombshells that bob mueller mighten cover in his investigation, but the way things are going now most of muellers team are antitrump. Its hard to see a scenario where republicans would turn on trump and vote him out. Do you share my concern sometimes the impeachment things overtake the conversation about the Midterm Election .
