Congress, but this is where the president is focused. And he is getting help from many republicans in congress on this futile effort at more political power and undoing democracy, as Cnns Kaitlan Collins reports. Reporter mr. President , will you take our questions . Without answering a single question from reporters, President Trump cut his florida vacation short today and left behind a ballroom of disappointed guests at maralago for tonights new years eve party. Instead of walking the red carpet like last year, trump will ring in the new year in washington, after spending most of his time in florida, in an irritable mood, fuming about everything from his election loss to first lady melania trumps renovations. Sources say trump is almost singularly focused on a plot by his republican allies to disrupt congress certification of joe bidens win next week, which democrats are dismissing as absurd. Theyve got to choose here. Its real simple. Theres only two choices. You choose democracy of the constitution or you choose the big lie in front. Josh hawley is the first republican senator to accept the challenge of President Trump. He may not be the last. This is the one opportunity that i have as a United States senator, this process right here, my one opportunity, to stand up and say something. And thats exactly what im going to do. Senator ben sasse said he wont participate in the stunt by his fellow republicans and urge others to reject this dangerous ploy. Adding the president and his allies are playing with fire. If you make big claims, you better have the evidence. But the president doesnt, and neither do the institutional arsonist members of congress who will object. Sasse also noted, when we talk in private i havent heard a single Congressional Republican allege that the Election Results were fraudulent, not one. The Vice President has a limited role in the process, President Trump is demanding mike pence fight harder for him. Editorial board is saying trump is putting his loyal vp in a tough spot. The scramble to overturn the will of the voters tarpishes mr. Trumps legacy and undermines any designs he has on running in 2024. Jake, we also just learned Mitch Mcconnell this morning held a Conference Call with Senate Republicans and on that call he called out for senator josh hawley, first one to explain his reasoning behind that decision, that we are told he did discuss with republican leadership. He did not really discuss with his fellow republicans because, of course, a lot of them are out of town right now because of the holidays. When Mitch Mcconnell called on josh hawley multiple times, he did not respond and later realized he wasnt on the call. Jake . Let me start with the news i just brought at the top, which is two House Republicans told me just in the commercial break before the show that they expect at least 140 House Republicans to vote on january 6th, to object to the Electoral College votes for joe biden and then to vote against that. Is that what your report something saying . We should note how unprecedented that would be. No one has ever voted against the Electoral College in numbers like that. It has happened before in very small numbers but not if it is 140, not to that degree. We were certainly expecting, especially as, you know, on the house side and josh hawley on the senate side once one person kind of breaks the dam, there would be there was an expectation that there would be more republican lawmakers kind of flooding in. 140 people, that is a remarkable number. If you think about it, not that surprising, because it was about, what, 126 republican lawmakers who signed on to that texas lawsuit, contesting the Election Results and which we know was a very futile effort. But this is the problem with this vote here, which it happens every four years. Its very proforma, ceremonial, to certify the Electoral College votes. It has rapidly turned into a trump loyalty test, which is why youre having these high numbers of republicans saying they would object to the results. I would point to what senator ben sasse said in his post and what republicans do say privately, that there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, that the Electoral College, the counters in every state did their job. This vote is something that the president is clearly very closely watching, that the base is very clearly watching and, again, turning into a loyalty test more than the integrity of the voting institutions of our democracy which, frampgly, is very dangerous. Its loyalty to President Trump as opposed to to loyalty to the process and democracy itself. And, jackie, as sechlt ung min said, writing, i havent had one singular republican express their concerns about the fraudulent election, not one. We should note that every single one of these House Republicans was elected. Reelected. Elected or reelected in this same election, including from pennsylvania and from michigan and from wisconsin and arizona and georgia. Not one of them are suggesting that theres anything that happened in their elections. Its just the biden thing. Its so embarrassing, jackie. So, theyve never tried to square that dissidents that you just pointed out because thats not the point. Its about supporting President Trump and whatever lunacy hes pushing i do think theres two buckets here. Theres that, then theres someone like senator hawley, who is kind of part of this apprentice to inherit the Maga Movement should President Trump ever step aside. Ted cruz is part of that group, saying he would step up and defend that lawsuit from texas, the texas ag, that all of those republican sign ed on to it, if it went to the Supreme Court. Ted cruz knew that wasnt going to go to the Supreme Court and josh hawley knows this isnt going anywhere in the senate. Its about the appearance of backing up the president , being in his corner in order to curry favor with the base. And ben sasse referenced that not by name in his long Facebook Post as well. He didnt mention hawley. Not by name. But, to be fair, its also a group that includes ted cruz, who offered to argue that deranged Texas Attorney general full of conspiracy theories and lies before the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court looked at it, threw it out the window. Kaitlin, the wall street Journal Editorial Board, pretty supportive of President Trump, not necessarily about his more abhorrent behavior, but about his policies. They wrote this about his actions, mr. Pence about, the Vice President , is too much of a patriot to go along. The scramble to overturn the will of the voters tarnishes the president s legacy. Republicans who humor him will be giving democrats license to do so in the future and then it might matter. Thats an interesting way to argue that this is abhorrent behavior, to say when the democrat does it its going to be bad, too, even though the democrats havent done it to this degree. But i guess another question i have is, do you think that the wall street Journal Editorial Board is right when they say Vice President pence isnt going to go along with this . I dont know what pence is going to do. Reporter i dont think the Vice President knows what hes going to do yet. He does realize he is in what they describes a terrible spot because, of course, he is someone we talk about josh hawleys and the others who have political ambitions. The Vice President does, too. Its rumored he would try to run for reelection in 2024. So he has to walk a tight line for his own political future but also anger the president. He has zeroed in on this role that pence is going to play last week even though, as we noted its just ceremonial really, opening the envelopes. The president knows hes going to be there. He wants him to take a role in this, in addition to those Republican House members and senators. He is probably in the worst position of anyone in this. And i think people around the Vice President and in the white house are keenly aware of that, and theyre kind of waiting and watching to see what exactly it is hes going to do. I should note in our story, we reported yesterday, saying that the president was coming back to washington early, we also heard that they were planning a foreign trip for the Vice President. He was supposed to leave shortly after this process happens on capitol hill. But now planning for that trip has been put completely on hold. We dont actually expect him to go on one anymore. I think it has to do with the calculations of whats going to happen next week. Sechung min, david purdue, running for reelection, is quarantining days before the runoff on january 5th after his Campaign Announced he had a close contact somebody who was in close contact tested positive for coronavirus. Seung min, do you think this might have an effect on the Runoff Election . Well, in a race that were expecting to be as close as they are in the georgia runoff, every vote matters. Certainly its going to have some softer an impact. All through this year you see republicans rely so much more on these inperson events where they are, you know, Holding Hands shaking hands with reporters, very often maskless, crowded in these rooms. Remember that the president is going to be going down to georgia on the eve of these critical runoffs. Could senator perdue make it by them with the quarantine timeframe its unclear that would be able to happen. Certainly it will have an impact and also just ingest the issue. Not that it wasnt there already but this issue, how front and center this issue of the pandemic has been in virtually every campaign, but certainly this one. And also, frankly, deprives senator perdue, should there be a vote on Mitch Mcconnells plan to give President Trump these 2,000 or to do the stimulus check on expanded stimulus checks that we dont expect to pass because there are some poison pills in it. It does also deprive david perdue a chance on voting on that, saying i voted for these checks the president wants. Jackie, seung min, kaitlin, thank you very much. In our health lead we are ending this gallstone of a year on a grim note. Over 340,000 americans have lost their lives to this virus. While the Coronavirus Vaccine has offered some sign of hope, the slow speed of distribution is also leading to disappointment as cnns athena jones now reports. Fresh signs of a deepening crisis which could make january a particularly challenging new month, hitting a high of covid19 deaths for the second day in a row. More than 3700 people losing their lives to the virus, as the cdc projects as many as 80,000 more people will die in the next three weeks. Hardhit Los Angeles County surpassing 10,000 covid deaths since the start of the pandemic. We are at our capacity. And while were seeing the caseload begin to level off, we know two or three weeks of more hospitalizations and more deaths that follow last week and the week before caseload, we are still going to have our toughest and darkest days. Reporter hospitalizations nationwide also setting a record again on wednesday. 12 states reaching new highs for hospitalizations, including georgia, where officials have set up a Field Hospital in an Atlanta Convention center. Were in a critical, critical point. And with california becoming the second state to identify a case of the more contagious coronavirus variant first discovered in the united kingdom, doctors say it raises the stakes for getting the vaccines out faster even as experts acknowledge distribution so far is falling short. Just 2. 8 million doses administered out of 12. 4 million distributed. A tiny fraction of the 20 million dose goal government officials set. We would like to have seen it run smoothly and have 20 million doses into people today, by the end of the 2020, which was the projection. Obviously, it didnt happen. And thats disappointing. Several states facing problems, getting shots into arms. Maybe my expectations were too high, that the vaccine would have been rolled out faster, in a much more efficient manor than it has been. If we had more doses, we would get those into arms as well. The demand at this point far exceeds the supply. Dr. Anthony fauci saying giving more people a first dose of vaccine to provide some protection is under consideration. You can make an argument, and some people are, about stretching out the doses by giving a single dose across the board and hoping youre going to get the second dose in time to give to individuals. Reporter one place that has seen some hiccups with Vaccine Distribution is West Virginia. On a day when nearly 8,000 people across the state were vaccinated local Health Officials said 42 people in boone county were mistakenly given the antibody cocktail instead of modernas vaccine. The county Health Department says it will continue to work closely with the West Virginia National Guard and the state Health Department to review internal policies and procedures and all affected individuals would be offered the covid19 vaccine today. Jake . Dr. Peter hotez joins us now. First, how is Vaccine Distribution going in texas . Well, whats going on in texas is similar problems to the rest of the country. We received 600,000 doughs as of a couple of days ago, given only 100,000 doses. Some of that was being held back for the second dose, but whats going on in texas is not too different from the rest of the country. Weve got to figure out a way to dramatically expand the number of americans who can get vaccinated. And its clear that operation warp speed never really addressed that. It was like Everything Else in this covid19 response. There was no ownership of the federal government. Everything has been left to the states and the states are clearly not equipped to manage this. So, were going to need intervention by the government. How many vaccine injections should we be doing . How many would you like to be seeing . Well, jake, just the back of the envelope calculation, if you know that you want to get 80 of the country vaccinated by later in the summer, early fall, thats a tremendous number of americans. Thats 240 million americans. When you do the math, thats a million americans every day from starting now until late in the summer. And if you look at the state of texas, thats 100,000 texans a day. And were just not even close to even getting to that point with this kind of hodge podge of pharmacy chains and some of the hospital systems, and some of the Public Health clinics. Were just not going to get there. So, were going to need to call an audible and come up with something really substantive in order to vaccinate large populations. And, you know, playing around with the doses and holding back on the second dose just you know, we dont have the Evidence Base to really warrant that. The clichingal trials were done with a very specific dose, and a very specific interval. Everything else is adding additional risk. Thats not the answer. The answer is to step up and really implement a system where we can vaccinate through a high throughput vaccination, whether thats using football stadiums in order to vaccinate large populations or realizing that some of the lowincome neighborhoods are pharmacy deserts and putting in infrastructu infrastructure there. Thats where the emphasis needs to be and thats what im hoping the Biden Administration is recognizing, that were once again coming up small in terms of Public Health infrastructure, and weve got to get some ownership from the federal government. So given that the vaccine is still elusive in terms of getting it into sufficient arms and given that were losing 3,000 to 4,000 americans every day in this country and given that we expect it to get even worse after the Holiday Season, testing remains very important. Were still not up to speed on where we need to be in testing. I think were doing about 1. 5 million tests a day. Theres a new cdc study that says that the rapid antigen tests are far less accurate than the pcr tests. Almost a year into this pandemic, how are we still at the point ta theres a prat the prevalent, popular test that has a false negative one in five . Diagnostic testing for respiratory viruses is problematic to begin with. That is an additional concern. And this is why i say our federal government never if you look at the laundry list of things that havent happened in terms of missing the entry of the virus from southern europe, into new york, never getting the diagnostic testing up to speed, the one thing that we counted on was vaccinating the american people. We heard about operation warp speed. We heard about our fourstar general. Now we realize that was all about sending out fedex trucks, u. P. S. Trucks to the states and letting the states figure it out once again. And until we get federal intervention, this is just not going to work. And there was an absolute refusal from the Trump Administration to take ownership of that, insisting that the states have to be the lead when the states never have that capacity for diagnostic testing and for epidemiologic surveillance. We only have 55,000 virus genomes. The virus isolets compared to 50 in australia, new zealand and 70 in the uk. Thats why we never picked up the uk variant, south african variant or other homegrown variants that are probably still there. Every element of our Public Health infrastructure has largely failed us. The consequence of that is were backed into a corner now. Weve put ourselves in this situation where we have without any other recourse, we now have to vaccinate our way out of it. And this is what we need to do. We have to put the infrastructure in now. Dr. Peter hotez, thank you very much. Texan of the year by the dallas morning news. Military muscle flexing is meant to warn tehran off attacking any american interests. Defense officials are split on the specific risk from the erinian regime. Oren lieberman joins us now from the pentagon with more. Tell us what youre hearing. Reporter much of the focus is on iraq, and what iran or iranian proxies in iraq might try to carry out there. Military officials tell us at cnn that theyre seeing evidence that iran has moved shortrange Ballistic Missiles into the region and theres tension between the militias there and iran and plans that are advanced and complicated north of that they would require iranian support. The current threat level coming from iran is the highest theyve seen in a year since the killing of Qassem Soleimani one year ago. Thats not a universally held belief at this point. Another official says theres no current intelligence or corroborating intelligence that there was an attack imminent from iran. As of right now, the posture and position of the u. S. Military is one of deterrence. That is where that b52 flight came in around the region a similar flight like that earlier this month as well as a fairly rare statement from the navy that a u. S. Oren lieberman, thank you very much and congratulations on the new beat. Any actions that the Trump Administration takes with iran undoubtedly will fall on the lap of president elect biden. Joe johns is covering the biden transition for us. The biden camp has been understandably upset by what they claim is a lack of access to intelligence from the pentagon, something normally provided to president ial Transition Teams. How might this be playing out when it comes to developments with iran . First thing, jake, i did talk to senior biden official today who said that the department of defense still is not cooperating and has not given a briefing to the Transition Team in almost two weeks. Nonetheless, this senior biden official said they are getting some information from other sources, including other departments. And thats also, obviously, an issue with biden and his intelligence briefings, which he is getting as well. So, some information is getting shared. Just not from the defense department, which could be a National Security issue when youre talking about iran. Also, there was some more pushback today from the office of management and budget. The director sent out a hashly worded letter, telling the transition that their statements that theyre not cooperating are false, that they are sharing information with the transition, but they also said theyre just not going to help the biden people put together a budget that, in their view, would contradict the priorities of the Trump Administration. Jake . Joe, president elect bidens inaugural committee announced today theyll host a National Memorial to remember and honor the hundreds of thousands of lives lost to covid19 in the u. S. Have you heard any other details on that or anything else being planned for bidens inauguration on january 20th . Just a bit. Here in washington, d. C. , apparently a Lighting Ceremony thats supposed to occur on january 19th, the day before the inauguration, and this is essentially to be a moment of unity, also a remembrance of the victims of covid19. As well, theyre asking people all around the country to light up buildings and for church bells to ring. Again, a sign of unity, solidarity and remembrance of the victims in the pandemic. Joe johns, thanks so much. Appreciate it. If the ball drops in times square and theres no one there to hear it, is it still new years eve . Ive covered the ball drop before in my career and usually this is the time of the night where the crowd is still staying revved up and in those pens for hours, sometimes wearing diepers. It is eerily quiet right now. We are a few feet away from the lockdown section, the frozen zone of time square where the nypd has basically barred anyone from going inside unless they have taken a covid test. Its only the performers from tonight and crew. Later on in the evening, only those front line workers, the he heroes of 2020 will be escorted into smaller pens that have been set up, about 40 of them, and their families, in socially distanced pens. Dont even try to come to this area and circle around the streets, around times square, because you will be pushed back and we have actually seen that happen. People being told dont even take a picture. Just leave. That is really whats going to happen throughout the evening, even when that ball drops. We will see the excitement, maybe hear it from the streets, in homes of people in manhattan, but it certainly wont be happening in large form like we have seen in the past. This is going to be happening with the nypd always, of course, protecting this area. But with 80 fewer force than they have in the past. Author of the book detox your thoughts, thanks for joining us. You and i have been talking regularly since the pandemic began. It has been an awful year, and nobody should think that everything is going to magically change at midnight. How can we try to get a fresh start when we know that the end is not happening, you know, at midnight tonight . We still have several more months before its anything close to back to normal. Right. And just because the ending isnt going to be immediate, it doesnt mean that were not actually closer than weve ever been before. And i think theres so much hope in that. Theres so much hope in how far we have come. When we think about all the efforts to bring the vaccine, all the front line medical workers and all the people who have chosen to stay home, and stay masked and stay protecting other people, we really have a lot of hope that the human spirit has made a lot of progress here. Some of us have been able to find Silver Linings in the midst of all this. I was talking with my family this morning. We talked about how much closer we all are, all the things that the kids were able to achieve this year, but do we risk offending people who are grieving by trying to look for Silver Linings . I think the two can coexist, just like the underside of grief is love, we can also be grateful and also mourn losses at the same time. I think thats truly engaging with life, right . Thats the ability to say there are bright spots here, but theres also darkness. Were going to choose to show up and be there for each other and embrace all of t i think there are some bright spots. Maybe we have figured out whats important to prioritize in our lives that we can Carry Forward with us and grow stronger because of it. What do you say to people out there . Look, we all had bad 2020s. Some people had really bad 2020s. They got sick. They lost loved ones. Whats your message to them . My message is that we all are in this together. And if you have experienced severe loss, please reach out. There are people who care. There are people who love you. I know a lot of people are alone today, in ways that they dont want to be. But the truth is, were all part of something greater here. No matter the size of your loss, its really important, that social support, that you seek it out. That you talk about how youre feeling, that you dont have shame in saying im really hurting and maybe my loss isnt as big as someone elses, but im really having a hard time. And for all of those that are grieving, i want to say that my heart goes out to you and that moving forward from grief is not about the dpreef and loss totally going away, but its about us growing bigger and wrapping around around it and letting it become part of us as we move forward. Theres a lot of people who are spending, right now, an entire Holiday Season by themselves. A lot of people are going to be spending new years eva loan. Wh what do you say to them . First of all, thank you f youre doing it for reasons to keep other people protected, thank you. Think about how years from now you can be looking back and knowing that that small action, or maybe it felt like a big action, actually may have saved lives and you were part of this larger effort in trying to get to the other side. Thank you. It hurts. Theres no substitute for being away from family when you dont want to be. And yet hopefully when were all out of this, can you have pride in the fact that you did your effort and keep people from dying. You and i always talk about this. Our kids. Horrible, horrible, traumatic year. A year thats going to leave scars. As parents, what can we say or do to encourage them in the new year, that things will get better, that this is not the new normal . The first step is to listen. We want to say the perfect thing. There is no perfect thing. The perfect thing is connecting and hearing what their concerns are. And validating their feelings and trying to help them understand that we can take baby steps in moving forward. And that pain does not automatically mean that life is ruin ruined thoor life is not worth living, that we can get through this if we lean on each other with support. And just making it okay to talk about difficult stuff and to respect each others feelings, to make our relationship one where we can actually listen to each other. Dr. Andrea bonior, youve been a blessing to me and my viewers. Thank you so much. Happy new year. Ill see you again in 2021. Thanks so much, jake.
