Explained to us on this snow yesterday. He misstated the magnitude of the benefit he said that there was a 35 reduction, that 35 out of 100 people would be saved, right, if they got plasma. Thats a complete misrepresentation of what the data actually showed. Dr. Khan now acknowledging marrazzo was right and apologizing for overstating the benefits of convalescent plasma pushed by President Trump, calling the criticism of his statements justified, but maintains the emergency use of the Plasma Treatment was not politically motivated. Many Health Officials believe theres not enough evidence behind its use and have been concerns the push is part of President Trump looking to deliver victories of sorts ahead of the november election with many experts worried the president may push a vaccine before one is ready. Cnns senior medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen joins us now. Elizabeth, how significant is that overstatement of efficacy by dr. Hahn . Its a big difference. I mean, we heard we just heard you and the other talking about how he said, oh, if there were 100 people who had coronavirus, convalescent plasma would prevent 35 of them from dying. Thats not at all right. Lets look at the numbers that are right. What the study did show is it looked at death rates when people who were treated and then people who died within a certain time period. What they found was that 8. 7 of the patients who were treated within three days of getting diagnosed died, but 11. 9 of patients who were treated 4 days or after their diagnosis died. Thats a difference. That is a difference. Its about a 35 difference. He was confusing something called absolute risk with something called relative risk. Is a rookie mistake. It is a bio stats 101 mistake. I think many people were surprised that he would make that mistake, but essentially, what dr. Hahn was saying earlier today is that the fda gave the authorization not based on his misinterpretation but based on the actual study. Lets take a listen. I can assure the American People that this decision was made based upon sound science. The data that we need which is a risk benefit assessment for an emergency use authorization were meant so, again, dr. Hahn saying the authorization was made based on science, not based on political pressure. Jake . All right, Elizabeth Cohen, thank you so much. I want to discuss this with dr. Ja, director of harvards Global Health institute. Do you believe dr. Hahn when he says this was not a political decision . Well, jake, thank you very having me on. Its hard to know, of course. I think that hes right that the fda certainly has the authority to do this. And in fact, the evidence may have been adequate. It just feels like coming 24 hours after President Trumps tweet and then the really gross mischaracterization of the data which dr. Hahn has walked back. All of that makes us worry the scientific process is being certainly the scientist at the fda are doing their job right. Based on your analysis, is there a clear benefit from plasma for patients . Ive been very hopeful about plasma for months. Hope is not science. Hope is not evidence. I think even the data that dr. Hahn talked about didnt compare plasma to no plasma. It compared people who got it early versus people who got it later and found that people who got it early, but there are all sorts of reasons that could be beyond the benefit of the plasma. So short answer, we dont know. We dont know who its useful for, dont know when its useful. We need the studies. Should Americans Trust the fda . Because ultimately theyre the ones that are going to approve a vaccine. Theyre the ones are going to say this vaccine is safe and effective. Should Americans Trust them . So, theres a long history of Americans Trusting the scientists at the fda and the cdc and it is the job of leaders like dr. Redfield at cdc, dr. Hahn at fda, to protect the scientists from political pressure. At this point, this great scientists of the fda are still there. So i trust them. But i want to make sure that their judgment is protected and not influenced by the political process and thats really going to be driven by the data that theyre looking at an theyd th putting out. A doctor at Johns Hopkins says the current trend of coronavirus outbreaks in the u. S. Is this idea of rolling hotspots because of the, quote, hodgepodge of policies that dont necessarily fit the task in many states. Do you agree with that characterization . Well, i certainly agree we have a hodgepodge. We have no National Strategy for this virus and so we have a hodgepodge of policies. I think respectfully disagree is this idea of rolling in the sense that everybody is going to at some point become a hotspot again. Really depends on local leadership. When governors ask smartly and based on data, i think they can keep the virus under reasonable control. Were seeing that in the northeast, part of the midwest, but not in other areas so its really about policy and what governors do. I think we can avoid those rolling hotspots if we continue to follow the science. The university of alabama reported more than 500 new cases among students, faculty, and staff, since classes resumed last week. Some colleges are threatening suggesti suspensions for students who disobey guidelines and gather together. Positivity rate at unc chapel hill is more than 30 . Realistically, should Colleges Even try to have inperson learning or students on campus . You know, jake, theres a right way to do this and theres a wrong way to do this. The right way really requires testing, quarantining kids when they come in to campus, trying to avoid some of those large gatherings, but being realistic that college kids are not going to be perfect in their adherence to those guidelines. I think a lot of colleges and universities just try to wing it, decided not to follow those Public Health guidelines and were seeing the consequences of that. Im hoping that other places that are much more careful and sciencedriven can open safely, but it is tricky, but i thingk e have a much better shot if we look at the science as opposed to doing it the way unc and other places did. I want to ask you, the Republican Convention is this week. Theyre pushing this revisionist history where china, democrats, the news media, mishandled the virus but President Trump and his administration did everything right. Whats your response . Well, i think theres a long history in our country of accountability among our leaders. The leader of our nation is donald trump, and we have the worst Pandemic Response of any major country in the world. So, i do think that we need to hold our leaders accountable and i think we need to hold the federal government accountable. It is not that weve had 50 governors whove all failed. We really had a failed federal effort on this. And im still hopeful that the federal government can turn it around. Otherwise, its going to be hard to get through this pandemic. Yeah. Dr. Ashish jha, thank you so much for time and candor. Coming up next, what trump advisers a saying about tonights Republican Convention. Claims of sex, lies and blackmail. The second night of the Republican National convention started in just a few hours will start in just a few hours headlined by First Lady Melania Trump, secretary of state mike pompeo in a break of tradition and two of the trump children. Despite promises of an optimistic message much of last night seemed largely focused on dire warnings, a country, what it might look like under control by democrats. Cnn White House Correspondent Kaitlan Collins joins me live. Is there any indication the message tonight will be more optimistic as we were told it would be . I think the way that the Campaign Sees it is they are drawing a contrast between the president and joe biden. They say they dont think that this is some kind of dark message, though. The reason that really that setting was there, that standard was set, was because of the president. He was the one who said it was going to be a much more uplifting convention than what he believed democrats held last week, when most of last night looked more like this. They want to destroy this country and everything that we have fought for and hold dear. This is an election between a party that wants to burn down the foundations of our country to the ground and a party that wants to rebuild and protect our great nation. Its almost like this election is shaping up to be church, work, in school, versus rioting, looting, and vandalism. Now, there were softer approaches. You saw that from senator tim scott. People like nikki haley. I talked to someone today who said the hold evening had been more muted speeches like that the president wouldnt have been happy with the way night one turned out. Night two tonight, jake, were going to hear from secretary of state mike pompeo. One of the big voices tonight. Its already drawing a lot of outrage before hes uttered a word. C of course, hes the first sitting secretary of state to address a National Convention in over 75 years and on top tof tht he prerecorded his speech from the famed hotel in jerusalem, the rooftop, going to tout the president s middle east policies while hes there. Thats while hes on an official diplomatic trip. People say thats breaking the president not to mix diplomacy with politics, though a state Department Official is saying no official Government Resources were used. Its still drawing a lot of criticism already. And, kaitlan, First Lady Melania Trump will speak tonight. Last time she was accused of plagiarizing excerpts of Michelle Obamas speech during the 2016 Republican Convention. Now weve learned that mrs. Trumps speech for tonight was not vetted by anyone in the west wing. What are we expecting to hear from her tonight . Yeah, this has really been an isolated speechwriting process for melania trump. Its really been handled mainly out of the east wing. It hasnt gone through the west wing. The republican campaigns the Republican Convention committee really, speechwriting committee, thats been handling all of this. Instead, its been her own project. Chief of staff said today when she was asked about those accusations of plagiarism from last time, she said shes written every word herself this time and you can obviously expect it to focus on be best, her missions shes done with children, things like that of that nature, but it will be her longest speech yet. It will be interesting to see how wide ranging this speech is from the first lady and it will be live tonight in the rose garden. We do expect President Trump to be there for it. All right. Kaitlan collins, thank you so much. Appreciate it. Speaking of the Republican Convention, last night at the Convention Donald trump jr. Said, we are not going to tear down monuments and forget the people who built our great nation, instead, we will learn from our past so we dont repeat any mistakes. I thought that donald trump jr. Was referring to confederate monuments but he told me today that he was not. He was referring to monuments of the Founding Fathers which he had referenced earlier. I regret the error. The Biden Campaign is trying to diminish the rnc today by rolling out another group of former republican officials who are backing biden in this election. And they are getting help at undermining the president s message by his former lawyer, Michael Cohen. Cnns jessica deans joins me lye from washington. Who are the latest endorsements . Why does the campaign think may might be important . Jake, today these are eight former appointeed appointed by past republican president s, reagan, president george h. W. Bush, president george w. Bush and one appointee who served on President Trumps Transition Team and the biden team really thinki ining this makes the cas. They came out saying they are supporting joe biden because of what they see as corruption and abuse of power from within the west wing, from within the oval office. They said that President Trump has used the department of justice to protect himself and his friends and that they really want to take a stand on this, jake, but interesting, too, on the flip side, we saw last night a Georgia State representative, a democrat, speaking at the rnc. So were seeing a little bit of this back and forth, and also important to note just how much do these people, do these past republican appointees and form dish and republicans that are coming out for biden represent where the Republican Party is today. Under President Trump. Theres also this new ad out from a thirdparty group featuring Michael Cohen. The president s former lawyer. Who we should note is still on house arrest as part of his sentence for tax evasion and other charges. What is Michael Cohen saying in this ad, and is it credible given his history . Well, so Michael Cohen now out with this ad through a democratic group. Theyre the ones responsible for putting this out. And hes talking about how he knew President Trump and really what hes learned from this experience. Ill let you take a listen. Here he is. Im here to tell you he cant be trusted and you shouldnt believe a word he utters. The president is going to talk to you about law and order. Thats laughable. Virtually everyone who worked for his campaign has been convicted of a crime or is under indictment. Myself included. I was a part of it and i fell for it. You dont have to like me, but please, listen to me. So, american bridge, the group that put that out, wouldnt comment on whether cohen was paid for his appearance in that ad and, jake, to your question about should it be trusted or not, thats really up to the voters at home. Michael cohen, of course, putting out this image that hes been rehabilitated in his thinking around President Trump now that hes faced legal consequences. The Trump Campaign saying hes simply not trustworthy. They wouldnt answer whether or not hes been compensated. Interesting. Jessica dean, thank you so much. Tonights headliners at the Republican National convention include senator rand paul, secretary of state pompeo and First Lady Melania Trump. Live coverage will start at 7 00 eastern here on cnn. Right now in louisville, kentucky, a fourday demonstration just started calling for justice in the Breonna Taylor case, killed by police in her own home on march 13th. One officer was since fired. None have been arrested. She was only 26 years old. She worked as an emergency medical technician. Cnns Jason Carroll is live for us in louisville. Jason, organizers are calling this event breonnacon. Whos behind the event . What do they hope to accomplish . Reporter well, there are a couple hundred demonstrators that started at a park not close to where we are, about a mile away, marched through the streets of louisville to a Police Training station, jake. Then stopped in front of churchill downs, home of the Kentucky Derby and staged a sitin. So far, no arrests. In terms of what theyre trying to accomplish out here, im sure youve heard this before, they want to keep the attention on the three officers involved in Breonna Taylors shooting. When i spoke to Breonna Taylors mother she said that shes continuously inspired by demonstrations like this. Seeing people come out, expressing their point of view. Now, these demonstrators say the organizers tell me that they want this to be a peaceful demonstration. Nonviole nonviolent. But they didnt want to mistake peaceful for being quiet. And they didnt want to mistake peaceful for acts of disobedience which they say they intend to have these acts of disobedience throughout the day and into the early evening. So as we see right now, weve got the protesters who have stopped their sitin in front of churchill downs, theyre continuing their march. They say theyre going to continue their march throughout the day and, again, the purpose of this to make sure that investigators know that a number of people here in this community have not forgotten about Breonna Taylor, not forgotten about those three officers as well. Jason, the mayor said police would get involved if protests become violent but so far youve seen no evidence of any violence, right . Reporter no evidence of any violence. Weve seen evidences and acts of civil disobedience, again, seen the people standing, lying down in the middle of the street here. No acts of violence. The organizers say thats not what they want, Breonna Taylors family dont want violence. They want to keep the issue focused on the investigation, outcome of that investigation and the three officers involved in the shooting of Breonna Taylor. Jake . All right. Jason carroll in louisville, thank you so much. Also on our national lead, jacob blakes father says his son is paralyzed from the waist down at least temporarily. The 29yearold black man was shot in the back by ken noesh ha ke kenosha, wisconsin, police. Overnight, more violence and protests in kenosh ira, Police Revealed few details of what happened. Sara sidner is live from kenosha, wisconsin. You spoke to blakes father. What did he have to say . Reporter he told us his son has gone through multiple surgeries in the hospital, still in the hospital in stable condition and the docketsers told him his son is actually paralyzed from the waist down. Now, the question is whether or not he will be paralyzed for life or this is temporary. That, doctors do not know at this point according to his father. But certainly, a lifechanging moment for him and for the three children. A 3yearold, 5yearold, and 8yearold that his dad said was inside the car when their father was shot. So there is a lot of grief in this family, even though theyre so very thankful that their son is still alive and still with us. We also were able to talk to his uncle, justin blake, who talked about his nephew, saying that he used to come to chicago to volunteer. He used to live in chicago. And actually moved here because he was trying to find a better life for himself and his children. And then the family got this devastating telephone call that no family ever wants to get. After talking to his mother, she and my brother are asking people in kenosha and around the nation to protest but protest nonviolently. We want justice and were going to get justice. Were going to demand justice. But were going to do that without tearing up our own communities. Reporter and they have been very clear about that. That they are honored that people are in the streets, that they are saying their family members name, saying jacob bla blakes name, but they absolutely want this to be nonviolent because as the uncle said, the community will have to deal with the difficulties of some of these places being burned down around them. Some of these businesses being burned down around them. It takes away jobs and takes away resources and they want this to be peaceful but they also are demanding justice from the Police Department and officials as well. Jake . Yeah, and sara, the governor there, the democratic governor, said we cannot allow the cycle of systemic racism and injustice to continue. We also cannot continue going down this path of damage and destruction. People very concerned right there about what some, not all, but some demonstrators are doing in terms of the violence. Reporter yeah, its true, and like you said, its not all. Its a few people. But it has been very destructive in this town of about 100,000 people. There were clashes between police and protesters, the National Guard called out. But i also want to talk to you about what happened before the shooting of jacob blake and what we are hearing no u frw from a witness who actually took the video that went viral, he saw what happened before there was the actual shooting, the seven times in the back by the police officer. Heres what he said he saw in the leadup to all of this. I seen a black man get out the truck, his son was on the lawn, he told his son get in the truck now. His son ran to the truck like he was happy because he said, daddy, when he seen his dad. He ran to the truck and he walked in the house behind one of the women. I dont know if she was arguable. I seen her walk in the house behind one of the women that was outside. I stepped away and came back and i see the police wrestling him. Reporter so you hear him say he saw the police wrestling with him. He also mentions that there was a taser. Now, Attorney Benjamin Crump has said there was a taser involved in this as well. Everyone is wondering exactly what led up to police going after him. We hear from witnesses and from family members that there was some sort of altercation between two young ladies. That he stepped into the middle of. We do not know what the scenario and circumstance is there, but theres a lot more to be told and a lot of frustration here that after 48 hours theres still no new details coming out from the police investigation, although the state department of justice is investigating this case and is trying to go through that so they can get through it without leaking out information to the public they may need to complete their investigation. Jake . Sara, three years ago body cameras were unanimously endorsed in kenosha, wisconsin. As i understand it, there still arent any body cameras for police. Why not . Reporter yeah, so there are no body cameras for police. No body cameras i think for the Sheriffs Department as well. And its a matter of them the town and council talking about parameters and surrounding it and budgeting for it. There are a lot of questions being asked now. We would be able to see exactly what led up to all this if the officers had body cameras on so theres a lot of talk about that because there are towns right next door that do, in fact, have body cameras for their officers. A lot of folks believe those body cameras can both protect the officer as and public to sh exactly what has happened. Now its going to be a matter of what police say and what witnesses say and whether those match or not, jake. All right, sara sidner in kenosha, wisconsin, thank you so much. Appreciate it as always. In our politics lead today, if you tuned into the Republican National Convention Last night, you saw a message that you may have thought does not necessarily reflect life on this planet. You heard that President Trump has been effective in controlling the deadly coronavirus pandemic. Not that the death count is at 177,000 and rising or that with only 4 of the worlds population the u. S. Has more than 20 of the deaths due to coronavirus. You may have heard about the greatest economy in american history, with little mention of the 28 million americans who filed for unemployment or the thousands standing in line at food pantries to feed their families, but this is not an unfamiliar view of this world, if you are a regular consumer of fox. A new book out today, hoax donald trump, fox news and the dangerous distortion of truth, has a detailed neverbeforeseen inside look at the relationship between President Trump and the conservative network. Joining me now is the author of that book, cnns chief media correspondent and anchor of reliable sources, brian stelter. Congratulations on the book. It goes on sale today. Thank you, jake. Wish you success with it. How much of fox news influence did you see in the Convention Last night . Yeah, it was the fox convention. All week long its a fox convention. Back in 2018 in the runup to the midterms fox had a big hand in starting the caravan invasion. Remember the Migrant Caravan . The invasion lie . That started on fox, went to trump, the gop. This year its about law and order from fox, to trump, to the gop, and now thats the Convention Theme it seems as well. Your new book, hoax, details how fox got where it is, how it created the rise of donald trump. You paint a rather cozy relationship between the two, where the president even kept World Leaders on hold to do phone interviews with sean hannity. Tell us more. Yeah, thats right. The president s addicted to fox news. And if he was being fed really helpful information, learning about the world, that would be a good thing. You know, if he was reading magazines and books and maybe watching cnn. Instead, he watches fox more than any other network. Even fast forwards through the commercials so he can watch hours and hours on end and often getting misinformed by the network. Think thats why this matters, why this book matters. I tried to track five years of examples of this phenomenon and come most importantly, disturbingly, true this year during the pandemic. Misinformed about hydroxychloroquine and other matters related to covid19 on fox. More than 20 people have gone back and forth either going from fox to the Trump Campaign or fox to the Trump Campaign. You have new reporting on the relationship between President Trump and sean hannity. Including what hannity actually thinks about trump. I think this is really important because theres a lot of hypocrisy at play here. Its a big reason why i wanted to write the book, jake. Heres one of the comments in the book from close friend of hannitys who confided in me saying, hannity would tell you off, off, off the record that trump is a bat bleep crazy person. Thats from an associate. Another colleague concurred hannity has said to me more than once, he is crazy. Now officially hannity might say im saying hes crazy like a fox but give me a break. Hannity is on these long rambling phone calls with trump. He knows trump better than anybody. So do executives at fox niews ad other talent at fox news. I heard for the past three years concerns about the president s wellbeing, concern about his fitness from figures at fox. The problem, jake, is they never admit it on the air. Theres another issue i want to ask you about, separate from fox. The Washington Free beacon has this really interesting new report about this website called courier newsroom is pushing a sevenfigure ad campaign to publish these flattering pieces object vulnerable House Democrats on facebook. Courier newsroom, of course, is not an actual newsroom. Its an Organization Funded by democratic donors. When we look at bias and parading political views as news, its not just on the conservative side. Yeah. Although it might most prominently be. We also see examples like this. And this is a big problem. Im glad you brought this up because this is a phenomenon known as pink slime sites. They look like news. They but they are not. They are political activist groups that are masquerading as news. And these are popping up by the hundreds all across the country. Its happening in a lot of local markets affecting local races. Its something we need to keep a close eye on because i think a lot of voters are confused by these websites. And thats the intent, to confuse people. This is one of those times when its important to rely on trusted and sometimes oldfashioned brands. When your local newspapers been around for decades, when a Television Networks been around for decades, its more likely to be trying harder to get to the truth rather than these new sites that are popping up pretending to be something they are not. I remember a bunch of these, and i would see them on facebook during the 2016 election. I dont know who was behind them. But often with completely false, just blatant lies about hillary clinton. Is facebook, are twitter, are they doing anything about this . Facebook and twitter have come a long way from 2016. But theyre coming a long way from being tortoises. They were crawling, they were barely crawling in 2016. Now i guess maybe theyre a child thats able to walk. But they are so far behind on this problem. We see this game of whackamole going on. Its the worlds worst game of whackamole because they are unable to keep up with the deluge of mis and disinformation on their platforms. And unfortunately i feel like were going to be talking about this a lot closer to november when theres going to be election misinformation discouraging people from voting. And that may be to the president s benefit. Thank you so much again. The book is hoax. Its available right now. In our national lead, what was Tropical Storm laura is now headed for the gulf coast as a full fledged hurricane after the storm hammered western cuba overnight killing at least nine people on its path through the caribbean, laura is expected to gain strength as it barrels towards louisiana and texas. Laura comes on the heels of marco which made landfall monday night at the mouth of the mississippi. For more on all of this, meteorologist Jennifer Gray joins me now from the weather center. What can we expect from hurricane laura . Over the next 24 hours it could be a category 3 storm by this time more laking landfall on the Southeast Texas Southeast Louisiana border. This storm is in the perfect environment to rapidly intensify. Very warm ocean water, very little wind sheer. Its got winds of 75 Miles Per Hour right now with gusts of 90 moving at 16 Miles Per Hour. Its coming off of cuba off the yucatan peninsula. So really no more interaction with land before it makes landfall. So this is going to be a very powerful storm. Winds could be anywhere from 115 Miles Per Hour to 125 Miles Per Hour by the time it makes lannedfall. So it is going to be a strong one. Its not going to be like harvey where it just sits over one area for several days. Thats what a lot of people in houston remember. So dont think of a harvey. Think of more as much as i dont like to compare storms, think more like a rita, one thats going to be wind and stormsurge driven, not as much the flooding rain. Its going to enter sea surface temperatures right around 90 degrees, the low 90s, so a very ripe environment. Here other storms that rapidly intensified when we talk about that, rita, katrina, michael, all very, very powerful storms. It is taking a very similar track as rita did in 2005. Thats what a lot of this region remembers. So 110mileperhour winds. Plus, in this area shaded in purple and red, 74 to 110mileperhour winds. Youre going to be talking about downed trees, structural damage as well. 9 to 13 feet of storm surge in that area right in the middle. Wherever this makes landfall, thats where youre going to see the highest storm surge. And then it could be flooding very far inland as well. We could be talking about 6 to 10 inches of rain as well in those hardesthit areas. All right, Jennifer Gray, thanks so much. We begin this hour with the 2020 lead, day two of the Republican National Convention Set to kick off in a few hours. Among the top speakers this evening, trump children eric trump and tiffany trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and in a break from precedent, secretary of state mike pompeo will also speak delivering his political remarks from overseas in jerusalem. And if the first night of the rnc was any indication, you can probably expect more praise of President Trump, plus those surprises, the Trump Campaign telling reporters that President Trump himself will appear multiple times this evening. But as cnns ryan nobles reports, for a convention that President Trump promised would be hopeful and optimistic, so far we have heard a lot of grim and perhaps terrifying warnings about what the world will look like if democrats win. Reporter the message of the Republican Convention was clear from the start. They want to destroy this country and everything that we have fought for and hold dear. Reporter the fourday event kicked off with a series of speeches that offered an often misleading portrayal of the Trump Presidency from his record on Race Relations to his handling of the coronavirus response. One leader took decisive actions to save lives, president donald trump. Reporter much of the evening was filled with dire warnings about the prospect of a biden presidency. What you saw happen to us could just as easily happen to any of you who are watching from quiet neighborhoods around our country. President trump will defend the godgiven right of every american to protect their homes and their families. Reporter a theme echoed by the president s eldest
