It draws no conclusions about the guilt or innocence of americans. It does mention how russian Intelligence Officers posing as a hacker, how they communicated with a person who was in regular contact with senior members of the president ial campaign of donald j. Trump. We do not know how or whether any of the officers indicted had anything to do with alleged efforts by the kremlin to reach out to donald trump jr. , with dirt on Hillary Clinton, or george papadopoulos, who was told about Clinton Emails with ties to the kremlin. Nor do we know about the potential impact of that moment on july 27, 2016, during the Democratic National convention when candidate donald trump shared a message he had for russia about emails Hillary Clinton deleted. The president saying this is all a witch hunt. False, according to his own Justice Department. The president saying the hacks werent necessarily done by the russians. False, according to his own Justice Department. This tweet from two years ago, the joke in town, russia leaked the emails. Stupid because putin likes me. Thats not a joke. The president s allies suggesting all sorts of conspiracy theories of who it might have been, instead of the russians including the murdered staffman. All the theories false and, frankly, hideous. Leaks were a group of american hackers and gucifer 2. 0 was a lone hacker. Reporter none of the americans targeted knew they were communicating with the russians. They corresponded with americans during the course through the internet. Theres no allegation in this indictment that the americans knew they were corresponding with russian Intelligence Officers. Stone admitted he communicated with gucifer 2. 0, but didnt have knowledge about the hacking. Im not involved in collusion with the russians or anyone else. Theres no evidence to the contrary. Reporter the indictment alleged the russians first attempted to spear phish and hack emails used by Hillary Clintons personal office on the same day trump said this. You were in the Justice Department at one point. The timing of this is curious. Rod rosenstein said this is a matter of the grand jury indicted. Somebody scheduled them to meet today. Exactly. We dont know what is going on. Its a black box. One thing that is likely happening is mueller and his team knew. The summit is happening monday, we have to get out in front of it and have the indictments happen now, not later. What do you make of that . Is that inappropriate . I think they think it is patriotic and important to let the president know and putin know, let all of us know this russian interference is a fact. Or at least they know to charge an actual crime with backup evidence rather than allowing it to be something that has been talked about and Intelligence Community agreed it happened. The president remains doubtful. Maybe the timing is sort of an accident. Its the right thing to do, i think. This is an important thing to know, for us to know and the president to be confronted with that his own Justice Department is asserting before the summit. Yet, simone, knowing of the indictments to come, President Trump, this morning, referred to the Mueller Investigation as a rigged witch hunt that is getting in the way with relations with russia. That goes to show we know where the president stands. I dont think his stance is changing anytime soon. I believe democrats need to be unified on their messaging. After the indictments came out, se some leadership said he should meet, he shouldnt meet. Now, they are saying cancel the summit with president putin, one, because he cant demand that putin cut it out. Donald trump doesnt believe in the investigation. I dont think he understands the gravity and the severity of whats going on. Two, we cant trust even the president in what he would say in this meeting. Donald trump has not been clean on this issue. I would not put it past him to lie in the meeting or lie coming out of the meeting. I dont think the summit would be helpful. I think its important for democrats to go with that point. Something interesting that happened, on july 27, 2016, candidate trump says this to russia, if you are listening, i hope you can find Hillary Clintons emails. Okay . He said that in the middle of the Democratic National convention. This indictment notes that on or about that very same day, july 27th, 2016, the conspirators Spear Phished for the first time a domain by a third party provider. That seems to be a reference to Hillary Clintons private personal server. So, its unusual. They put it in the indictment for a reason. Its a heck of a coincidence, you know, whether the someone close to the president mentioned this to him before he went on stage, we dont know. I dont want to speculate and put stuff out that might not be true. You have to put those together. Theres no way to separate them. To simones point, there are the president , if this was out there, you could say, yeah, you should keep the meeting because he could walk in and say, look, this is what you have. With this president , we havent seen him strike any sort of aggressive posture with putin. Very little. We have seen things here and there. Not to mention what happened in the uk. The poison . The poisoning. They found the bottle that was the place where the poison came from. All of these events, all these events with allies, with our own elections, the midterms are only a couple months away. They still have dccc emails. Dccc i think its interesting because, i believe its not necessary at all. Its a signal by muellers team. Who and what is he signaling . What a signal. July 27th, the president says, you know, russia, if you are listening, i hope you get the 30,000 emails. Then the indictment broke. It doesnt mention trump saying july 27th. It notes it happened july 27th. They assume we have the ability to research. Respectably serving is his personal concierge service. That is a chilling thing from a National Security perspective and why mueller has been on the special counsel regulations. We drafted them in 1999. We have things like this when you had a president trying to shut down, say this is a witch hunt, whatever, to provide insulation. We wouldnt know about these russians if the Mueller Investigation had been shut down. Thats right. Dont you think its showing we know. Think about this as counter int intelligence. We know the date information was given. I think theres signaling here. How much they have. People who think they are going to get away with something. You know what, they have records of everything. You were one of those unnamed americans speaking to those people. Here is how the white house responded. The charges include no allegations of knowing, knowing involvement by anyone in the campaign and no allegations the hacking affected the result. This is consistent with what we have been saying all along. The thing that is missing in that statement is anything about russia. Is anything condemning what russia did . Its all about, number one, its about the president. Its all about no collusion, that sort of thing. It doesnt thank the Justice Department for their hard work. Any other hallmarks you would see from any administration, its not in there. Also, the posture in that statement is defensive. I dont think we have touched on, yet, the implications for the midterm elections. This, actually, should not be a partisan issue. Russia attacked our democracy. Today, we have 12, not hackers in a basement. They are russian officials that we know had hand in and were the people that attacked our corner stone of our democracy. The Trump Administration has that move to do anything to ensure this doesnt happen again. Now, democratic entities and committees have taken measures to be beef up. What about the elections . Two years they have been working with outright slander, working to squeeze the most out of the next dummy. Use the same language President Trump uses and cast it in the same way he does. This is politically motivated, this is fake news, theres no basis for it. Its the work of his political opponent. So, theres been some speculation, this may lead to some confrontational meeting on monday where President Trump sits down with vladimir putin, the russian president. You have to document beyond speculation. You have evidence, which the Intelligence Community couldnt roll out in that Community Intelligence assessment. We have solid, forensic, detailed evidence that the president can make use of. So, as a citizen, i would say, lets do it. Then i want to watch to see what the president does. The white house points to the fact that no american is indicted in this indictment and it is there are no assertions any american worked with the Russian Military officers. With that in mind, the white house and rudy giuliani, the president s lawyer said, that should be the end of it. What do you make of it when you see unnamed individuals and organizations in the indictment . Yeah, so, clearly, you know this, the indictment says we take no view on whether americans were involved. Doesnt say no americans were involved. We are not talking about that now. You know, the longer this goes on, i began jake, you and i talked about this a long time thinking it was going to end up in an inconclusive cloud. If you want to see x, you will see it. If you want to see y, you will see it. The more this goes on, the more i believe we are going to see a widening circle here. Let me Say Something you mean in terms of indictment . Its not a prediction, observation. I would not be surprised if this wor in the the last indictment we see that doesnt mention an american. In other words, there will be another indictment and americans involved . Assuming the meeting goes as planned, what do you think this indictment does in terms of the Political Support for President Trumps claim that this is all just nonsense. When his own administration, the Justice Department is saying, no, here is fact one, fact two, fact three. I read the indictment. Its a fascinating read. Its not that long. People ought to take a look at it. My first reaction as i began to read it was, yeah, like we said. Right. Its consistent with the assessment of the Intelligence Community. It has magnificent, what i think is forensic detail that the bureau was able to put together, who did what, when and what time, with what tools, for what purpose, against what target. Jake, to kind of spin that wheel one more time, this is largely, i think, forensic information. Imagine what the mueller team has available with regard to this activity from other sources that they would clearly not choose to put in what would be a public indictment. This is in your trade craft, signals intelligence, not human intelligence. It signals, yes, sort of. Signals intelligence after the fact, its crime scene intelligence. It is going through the law, going through otherwise available record, but very hard to do, very massive. You have seen what they have put together. Theres no evidence in my reading of the indictment of any evidence in there from what i would call the other side of the screen, what it is to the other guys. We are thinking doing between and among themselves. I want to get your reaction to something President Trump said this morning. What is important about this is the fact he had already been briefed by the Deputy Attorney general, Rod Rosenstein that they were coming. Yet, this is the way, on foreign soil, this is the way President Trump described the Mueller Investigation. I think we are being hurt very badly by the, i would call it the witch hunt. I would call it the rigged witch hunt. I think that really hurts our country and really hurts our relationship with russia. I think we have a good chance to have a very Good Relationship with russia and very Good Relationship with president putin. That is how he is talking about an investigation into a russian cyber attack against the United States. Its further evidence of a style with speaking and acting that we have seen evident in the president where he creates his own reality for his own purposes, for his utility at the moment. The germans are under control until they are not. We have this magnificent breed of detail that he characterizes as a witch hunt. His departure is for a lot of what he says and does, is not what you and i would call objective reality. Its what he needs at the moment. Some people, when i get into arguments, look what he does, not what he says. My point is, what a candidate or president says is not important. When you say untrue things, go back to july 27th. He called for the russians to look into Hillary Clintons emails and the indictment says, on that day, the Russian Hackers trying to get at Hillary Clintons campaign emails. Fascinating they decide to put that fine print into the indictment itself. It technically doesnt have to go that fine print for that issue. He put that is in there. At a minimum, all right, at a minimum, i think its clear evidence you say stupid things, even as a cant, you put yourself in jeopardy. At a minimum, thats where the president is.
