He earned two purple hearts only to have his wife stolen here at home. Lets get to cnns justice reporter evan perez. There was the chairman of the House Homeland Security agency saying they know of no link to isis or any other group. Is there a way to hash out whats going on . Infbi saying not so fast. Theres a lot of work left to be done. They do are looking at the possibility that this was isis inspired. The obvious choice given how much attention weve been giving to isis in the last year or so. The fbi says that at least at this point, there is no indication yet that this was inspired by anything other than by this gunman himself. We know that he travelled to jordan last year according to the jordanian government. He carried jordanian passports and travel documents but he was not a citizen, he was a citizen of the united states. The fbi wants to know who was he meeting and associateing with there. Did that have anything to do with what happened in chattanooga yesterday. The jordanians say they are assisting the fbi with any information they can get. Key information from the fbi at the press conference had to do with the separate investigation into how he obtained these arsenal. According to the fbi, he had two long guns and one handgun with him. John and the question is who helped him obtain those. At least one of those was might have been purchased illegally. And so now the fbi is looking to see whether or not theres a prosecution it can bring against someone who might have assisted this gunman. Really another face of the investigation that is now going to begin. Which is going to be back here in washington. And at quantico theyre looking at his devices, his computers. His cell phones. To see who he was communicating with. To see who, if anybody might have inspired or directed him to carry out these attacks. So far we dont believe that it was at least right now, we dont know there was anything another part of this investigation, john was really the description of the gun fight that happened yesterday in chattanooga. The police chief there Fred Fletcher described this scene, heres how he described what happened. That every day bravery that can all too often be taken for granted. Immediately after those reports of gunfire, officers began searching and located the gunman driving down the highway. Chattanooga Police Officers immediately began following and chasing that vehicle between the first and second location. Eventually officers encountered the suspect at the second location. That suspect soon made his intent his coweredly Homicidal Intent clear. Officers of the Chattanooga Police department did not hesitate. They engaged that person that gunman immediately aggressively. With the sole intent of making sure that he harmed as few Community Members as possible. That assailant, that gunman struck one Chattanooga Police officer with gun fire. As he went down his teammates who were responding equally as aggressively came to his aid. They put their hands on him, dragged him from under the gunfire, and bravely returned fire to insure that he was safe and the gunman remained engaged. Its clear john the actions of those Police Officers saved lives. They killed the gunman and thats how this ended yesterday. Its a tremendous amount of gun fire they faced. Evan perez, thanks so much. I want to go to victor blackwell, hes been doingen on the scene in chattanooga. Reporter the fbi is revealing just how prepared the shooter was for a gun fight. Telling us he had two long guns and at least one handgun and a vest prepared to carry extra information. As this is coming into focus, the investigators here on the scene and the community, theyre trying to get an answer to the difficult question why. A young boy, dressed as a marine absolute as he and his mother pay their respects to the four u. S. Marines killed thursday. As the city grieved, Law Enforcement is seeking an answer to why this area College Graduate went on a deadly rampage. His background is being examined. Officials say they were not on their radar or in their data base. The shooters situation is being treated as a terrorism investigation. Reporter officials are interviewing friends, searching his familys home and looking at his social media footprint for any links to terrorist groups. Were looking at any foreign travel he may have performed. Reporter the 24yearold grove up in his rented silver convertible mustang in chal nook nooka. He opened fire riddling the building with bullet holes. He pulled out the rifle and i saw the black handle and then he brought the barrel up as he brought the barrel up he started shooting and he just went back and forth shooting. And then he dropped the clip and put a new one in. Reporter Police Identify him and follow him for at least some portion of a seven mile drive to a Naval Reserve facility. Police say he rammed through the gate and killed four marines before he was shot by a Chattanooga Police officer according to a official. They identified the vehicle and the suspect they followed him and engaged him to and at the other scene. And they put themselves in tremendous risk to protect this community. Reporter were learning more about the four marines who were killed. Thomas sullivan was an iraq war veteran. Skip wells was from jrge just got out of boot camp. Carson homequist did tours in afghanistan. And david wyatt is said to have been 38 years old from tennessee, a husband and father. Adding to the confusion is that abdulazeez was a mixed marshal arts teacher. He was never treated like an out cast. He was pretty popular, really. Always a real funny guy. Reporter he was also a devout muslim who prayed at this mosque and others in the chattanooga area. Today flowers and prayers continue in a city thats trying to make sense of it all. And while were getting more information, there is one detail that still is not clear, when these four marines were shot and killed. We heard from the police chief that the officers in his words immediately and rugressively engaged the shooter, but they were not hearing exactly when in this chronology the marines were killed. It may not be too difficult to find sort of proisis connections in the kingdom. And also able to travel next door to syria and iraq. The fbi made clear no indication that he was directed by and or inspired by anyone than himself. Its interesting, theres sort of a pass the buck mentality right now in many of these middle eastern country. It said he was born here and not kwu waity. Yord jordan is saying he lived here but hes not jordanian. As was discussed he is devout but at the same time but was arrested for drunk driving. There are too many warning signs. The targets are similar to the targets called by isis to attack. He offered no evidence connecting isis to the attack. There is concern today that our men and women in uniform for not being protected to the extent they could be. At this recruiting center military are not allowed to be armed. Given the threat that everyone seems to agree exists on military even in this country. The military leadership i speak with regularly, theyre wrestling with some of their internal controls and improving ways in which their military personnel can be safely secured. We saw an incident a few weeks ago in my neighborhood in d. C. , a navy yard where we had another incident where security was jeopardized. So i think that for those who have made a commitment to protect our nation during wartime and nonwar scenarios, i think its important we equip them with the necessary tools to protect themselves. Youre saying maybe they should have guns . I dont think its out of the question. For specific training purposes and circumstances, the military has made decisions as to have some of those who hold post to be unarmed. But as i said ive met with leadership in the military theyre looking now at internal controls in which they can improve so that we dont have isthe situation occur again. Its interesting, one of the Muslim Community centers are down there attended by the shooter canceled their service. The Muslim Community is one of the biggest ally the government has. What would you advise the Muslim Community to be doing down there . There are many down there who are part of the apparatus who have been helping. And there are those who have ongoing interfaith efforts where theyre reaching across the aisle, to jewish brothers and sisters, and christians and nontheists and coming up with strategies countering violent extremism strategies so we can keep our community safer. Unfortunately, there was an incident that we need to watch more closely. And understand that every day, every week there are threats against our nation and there are muslims in our Law Enforcement agency whose are helping to thwart these attack and youll never hear about them. That was resolved within a month. There was an agreement reached at the end of that resolution that the father would agree not to hit the kids and that there would be some counseling going on. So there was trouble in the family back in 2009. Now we understand theres a lot of focus going on to what happened overseas and the extended trips that mohammed took overseas that is where the threads of investigation are heading. Weve been told that the military personnel inside that recruiting center many of whom are combat veterans they helped people inside get out. And even though they dont want to go on camera or speak a lot, they do hear and they do understand that a lot of people are supporting and they appreciate it very much. I think the country is behind them right now. Of course their son, skip wells, the Lance Corporal he was killed every reason to believe because he was a marine. It was a marine that he always wanted to be. It was his dream his entire life. What kind of kid was he . Skip was the kind of fellow you want to hang around with if you were a kid. He was very uplifting, you know ive described him as the guy youd want on your team if you had one. Youd want ten skips because he was he did his part and more. He was his High School Marching band. He was very much into that. The rotc he was the one that would be more precise in the drills than the next kid. Thats the way he lived and he always wanted to serve whoever he was with. Whatever situation he was in he wanted to be the best support he could be. I call him a kid, thats a marine. Thats no kid thats a grown man serving his country. Unfortunately, i still think of him as a kid. We saw him grow up. Boot camp graduated a year ago. Was his first year what was his first year of service like . Skip was sent to assignments. He was in the marine reserves he was awaiting assignment from the marines, perhaps overseas wherever they needed him. He was ready to go. His duty in chattanooga was a voluntary assignment. It was a twoweek thing. I dont know what it means. They ask for people in his rank to go to chattanooga for a few weeks to help out. It was a twoweek assignment. Yesterday, when the world first came in there had been a shooting in chattanooga, the Family Friends knew that skip was there. What was the concern, the feeling as you were waiting for that call waiting for any sign of how he was doing . The afternoon was long for his mom. She watched the news. She saw the developments. She saw more than a person would want to see in that situation. From helicopter shots. Then every service mom in america and the history of our service dreads opening the front door and seeing people in uniform. She faced that with strength i would not ever have.
