Reporter this week, seven people arrested for allegedly making threats against officers. One person targeting the 84th precinct, home of the fallen partners. Thank you for that report. With so many communities across the country on edge, police are investigating another shooting that sparked protests and arrests. It involved a white officer and a young black man. It happened in the st. Louis area just a couple of miles from where Michael Brown was shot and killed. But the mayor of that town is saying this is not another ferguson because theres video of the confrontation which appears to show 18yearold Antonio Martin holding the gun. The mayor will join us in a moment. But first to George Howell with the latest on what exactly is going on there, george . Reporter good evening, dana. That video will be a key part of the investigation because it shows exactly what happened. Police say, you can see their officer being confronted with a man who pointed a gun at him. There were heated protests. People demanded answers after 18yearold Antonio Martin was shot and killed by a Berkeley Police officer. And online, conspiracy theories about what happened ran amuck. People feared this could light the fuse for another ferguson. When i got there, we were all saying the same thing. Heres a white policeman killing a black young man. So when does this stop . And i can assure you that did not happen. Reporter berkeley mayor Theodore Hoskins insists this case is very time because this time, he says, theres visual proof clearly showing his officer fired in selfdefense when confronted by an armed teen. Specifically, three surveillance views from the gas station that investigators released to show exactly what happened. In one, you see two men in the parking lot face to face with the officer who responded to a report of shoplifting. Look closer and one of the men raidses his arm, pointing what Authorities Say is a gun directly at the officer. Another angle shows much more, presumably after the officer fires his weapon, he falls backward as if retreated. Then he quickly gets back to his feet. Despite this video proof, the mayor knows some will remain skeptical in this Community Just a few miles from the place that sparked tremendous national controversy. When it comes to a policeman thats doing the right thing and protecting himself, im going to support that, doesnt matter if hes black or white. Reporter there could have been more video proof of this incident. We know that that officer did have access to a body camera as well. But at the time, he just didnt happen to have it on him. Thank you so much, george. There were a handful of arrests in berkeley of protesters who were blocking a highway overnight in nearby ferguson, a driver plowed over a memorial for Michael Brown. It sits in the middle of a street near the canfield green apartment complex where brown was shot. The memorial was already cleaned up and rebuilt by this morning by volunteers who saw pictures of the mess on social media. Joining me now is the mayor of berkeley, missouri, Theodore Hoskins. Mr. Mayor, thank you for joining us. We heard you say there in georges piece that this is not like the case with Michael Brown for lots of reasons. What is the biggest reason, aside from the fact that we have video of it . What is the biggest differentiator, in your view . Thanks for having me. First of all, we have a video that details exactly who occurred. The majority of the Africanamerican Community is in shock. When they see the video, i think they will come to the same conclusion that i have, that this officer acted to protect himself and the threat of his life. For that reason, its not only the city of berkeley but the total community should be behind this officer. But do you not just as a mayor but as a black mayor understand why there are people out there, protesters who you have seen maybe not in the last day or so but in the immediate aftermath who just dont buy it, that they believe that this is racial . Yes, i understand it very clearly. There is a significant number of members of the Africanamerican Community that feels that everything a white policeman does is in brutality or is fatally wounding some innocent, as they say in the black community, innocent africanamerican. But i can assure you, in this case, that the officer acted in protecting his life and im asking the community to first of all allow us to complete the interview and the investigation so we can completely disclose all the information thats associated with this case. And on that issue of information and evidence, do you think that there is enough evidence to prove what youre saying beyond what weve all seen with this videotape . Well, i dont want to disclose all the information i received in reference to our investigation. We intend to hold a News Conference monday or tuesday to disclose Additional Information that will substantiate the position that i have taken. Now, in the wake of what happened in ferguson, there was a lot of discussion from the president on down about assigning body cameras to Police Officers. This officer was assigned a body camera but he wasnt wearing it. Why not . Well, the city of berkeley only has three body cameras. And each body camera has to be downloaded each day. This body camera that the officer was assigned was not downloaded. And he was brought the body camera three or four hours after he started. And it was just an error that he did not turn it on. H we have indicated in the future after experiencing with the body cameras, there will be a severe punishment if the body camera is not turned on. I want to follow up on that. There are three cameras that you give to your Police Officers. How many officers are on patrol or on the beat at any given time . Five. We have five officers on the beat. But you must understand that each day, we have to download the information off the body camera. That takes significant when youre working 12 hours, by the time one shift ends, the other one has to download, the other officers have to wait. Thats why we are asking if anyone is in a position to provide us with additional 25 body cameras, we will accept those. Im sure you will. Mr. Mayor, thank you very much for joining us. Today, fastforward to the day after the premiere, the headaches continue for sony, a Different Division of the company. Another hack or another attack but from a different source. The problem started wednesday into thursday and the companys Online Gaming network at this point remains knocked offline. Meantime, the Company Premiered the interview, that happened yesterday, despite threats from hackers. Look at this. Kim jongun wants to do an interview . Reporter Sony Pictures controversial comedy the interview pulled in more than 1 million at the box Office Wednesday and could bring in millions more over the weekend. I thought it was really funny. Reporter sony is now responding in a statement, quote, the audience reaction was fantastic. Despite a threat from hackers promising a Christmas Gift if the film was released, the only gift that showed up on Christmas Day, lots of moviegoers, lining up at 331 theaters across the country. First time was frankly intimidated. I was embarrassed that i felt intimidated. So i thought, now i have to man up and do this silly thing of standing on our own. Reporter the movie, about an assassination plot against north Korean Leader kim jongun, was also streamed online. Sony wont give out numbers but the film was the number one streamed video on youtube and google play on Christmas Day. But sony didnt escape the holiday unscathed. Its gaming division, playstation networks, crashed. Youre not alone. Reporter a hacker group known as lizard squad claimed responsibility saying it also took down Microsofts Xbox on the busiest gaming day of the year. This attack is really difficult to protect against because it floods the infrastructure with a lot of information that it wasnt intended and receiving and caused the services to shut down. Reporter theres no indication the gaming disruption is linked to the massive hack on Sony Pictures linked by u. S. Officials to north korea. Hackers have the edge. Hackers are much better at attacking than we are at defending right now. At this hour, Sony Playstation remains offline. Xbox mostly back up. But not completely. As for the film the interview, more than 1 million it grossed at the box office, it really pales in comparison to what they could have made. A regular release, usually talking about 2,000 to 3,000 theaters. They could have netted some 10 million. But instead were talking about more than 1 million. Also we know about these illegal downloads, roughly 750,000 illegal downloads. You have to bet that that most likely will cut into profits as well. Yeah. But im thinking at this point, theyre not as worried about their bottom line. They just need to get over all the publicity and National Security issues. Sure. Thanks, rene. The question is how did hackers infiltrate and shut down sony and Microsoft Gaming networks . I want to go to my next guest. Thank you for being with us. Lets just start with lizard squad. This is the group thats claiming responsibility for hacking into these games. What do we know about them, gordon . Lizard squad is really interesting because they were actually implicated in the initial attacks on sony. And some people suspect that lizard squad actually started to cooperate with the North Koreans and with another shadowy group. Lizard has had a history with sony, going against sony many times this year. This is interesting in that it shows up on Christmas Day. Probably not a coincidence from all that we can tell. Its still very early days. But probably not a coincidence. It almost seems like this is part of the movie. I watched it last night. The idea that Hacking Group called lizard squad would coordinate with the North Koreans. Do you think thats possible . Dana, its unfortunate, but you couldnt ask for a better hollywood script. But that said, the lizard squad, i think, is independent from the sony interview attacks and hacks. And not only independent, but even what theyre doing is completely different. In the sony interview attack, there was an infiltration. Gordon, what do you think the purpose of shutting down these game networks are . Gamers are not a bunch that i would think hackers would want to make enemies of. Theres a lot we dont know about. This is first of all still ongoing. It very well may not be related to the North Koreans. But one thing we do know, that is the North Koreans are not going to take the threats and the attribution the fbi made to them lying down. They are going to retaliate in some way, maybe against the u. S. Government, certainly against sony and probably against south korean activists who want to get the dvd of this movie into north korea. So theres going to be a lot of action. It may not be now, may not be a week from now. But we can be sure the North Koreans are going to make sure that they have the next word. And im guessing people watching this who might not be gamers who might not even be interested in this movie might be very interested in the fact that these are breaches. And the question is whether or not personal information can be compromised and whether this is an example or a prelude to that. Hemu, what do you think . This is a denial of service attack. What it means is everybody through bogus sites is going to xxbox live or Sony Playstation. Theyre not going and breaking into anything to steal anything. What theyre really doing is just making the servers not work anymore by flooding them with traffic. So its really more of a, shut it down, as opposed to taking stuff out. So the positive in all this is there is no personal information even at stake here because of the kind of attack this was. Gordon, what do you think . I think one of the interesting things is that north korea didnt need to attack the same way twice and also weve got to remember is that north korea has exfiltrated about more than 100 terabytes of data. They dont need to do the same thing again. They have that data and they are probably going to release it in retaliation. Guardians of peace said, great decision not to show the interview. But if you change your mind and show it, we will retaliate and we will show more emails. So thats probably on the way coming because sony now has made this decision to show it and has actually shown it. And we didnt see what they threatened, a 9 11style attack against anyone who went to see it. Obviously, thank god needs to probably be said. But what does that say about the bluster from north korea versus the reality of what they can pull off . Well, north korea always engages in misdirection. And sometimes they tell you what theyre going to do and sometimes they dont. It probably was never in the cards. They have other tricks up their sleeve which we probably will see some time down the road. North korea has always viewed the United States as a primary enemy and so therefore its no surprise that theyre going to go after us. Hemu, the legal side of this, you are a former federal prosecutor. Do you think Law Enforcement will be able to find lets just talk about the hack on the gamers, lizard squad people members of lizard squad, the people responsible for the latest hack . Well, i think lets make one thing really clear, this is definitely criminal acts that were seeing here. And i think one of the best things thats happening right now is that lizard squad is on squirt talking and talking and talking. And the more they talk, the more evidence and pieces of evidence they leave behind, even if theyre jumping from place to place and trying to hide their identity, theres another group thats trying to out them and maybe this is part of all the crossfire that people are getting stuck in. The reality is, the more they talk, the more evidence, the more Law Enforcement gets to pursue. I think maybe you wont take the entire group down but at least theres probably going to be somebody who makes a mistake along the way, leaves just enough evidence for them to find and prosecute. In our world lead today, the Obama Administration appears to be moving forward on closing the Guantanamo Bay detention center. Cnn has new details about plans to transfer dozens of detainees from the facility. Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr joins me now. Br b barbara, how soon could these transfers happen . Reporter some are already under way. Expect to see several more transfers, perhaps half a dozen, by the end of the year and then dozens more through the first half of 2015. This gets the president at least further down the road to making the population of Guantanamo Bay smaller, maybe he can get it down to just several dozen. Whether he can get it closed or not is going to be an issue. Theres a lot of political and legal controversy about all of that. But they are on the road to try and ship out basically as many detainees as they can, send them back to their home countries or get a third country to take them. One of the big issues, they have dozens of detainees from yemen. You cannot send them back to yemen. Al qaeda is very strong there right now. So theyre trying to solve that problem. If athletic do that, they might be able to really get the numbers down. President obama closer to his vow to try and close Guantanamo Bay. Barbara, you mentioned yemen. You well know that a lot of the complaints from capitol hill that i hear on a daily basis from republicans is the rate of recidivism. The people they release, on purpose or not, that go back into the battlefield against the u. S. What are you hearing about that from your sources there about how they try to avoid that . Jeb bush and Chris Christie will have that end of the field. Hes going to be competing against conservatives. You have ted cruz, bobby jindal of louisiana, Governor Walker of wisconsin, potentially mike pence of indiana, rand paul, marco rubio. They might be all there in there competing against him. In a conservative electorate, which is the people who vote in primaries, not being an establishment candidate is not necessarily a bad thing, right . Well, thats true. But if hes going to try to position himself to the right of jeb bush, hes got all the other folks to compete against. And some of those will be very formidable candidates, particularly in a place like iowa. Hes got a lot of work cut out for him, not just in being able to speak well but convince voters in the grassroots that they should vote for him in a caucus. You work in politics, you understand politics and the kind of feel of the voter, whether its a democrat or republican. Second chance here possible . Americans love a redemption story. So i actually think its great that hes getting prepared and that he understands and acknowledges how terrible his campaign was in 2012. But i think hes going to have more problems than just dealing with his conservative the other conservative governors and senators who might be running. He has a real problem with his record. He talked to you about job creation and about helping texas families, but what hes not telling you is that its the top 1 that he has really helped. During his administration, the top 1 made 26. 3 more than the bottom 99 . 49 in high school graduation, 50 in poverty somebody did their homework. And thats the problem. I want to move on to jeb bush really fast. I asked him about some of that. That will be in state of the union on sunday. Jeb bush is the only one unofficially in the race now. What do you think his chances are with the conservative base that you know so well . Hes not going to be the conservative base and hes not going to be the conservative candidate in the primaries. You look back four years ago, you had two conservatives splitting the vote, Newt Gingrich and rick santorum. I suspect jeb bush could be in the same position as mitt romney. So the conservatives have the question, can they unite behind a single formidable candidate whos electable, president ial can they . I think they can. Who is that person . I dont know. Were going to see. What about from the democratic perspective . Jeb bush is somebody, as terry said, who doesnt necessarily appeal to the conservatives whom could elect him and allow democrats to paint him as a right winger. I think symbolically and on the surface if jeb bush becomes a nominee, he could be a formidable candidate against whatever democrat is running. He speaks perfect spanish, we all know that in 2016, no one will be able to win without additional majorities of the hispanic vote, especially the republican nominee. He understands how to speak to latinos. But you also go back to the problem with the other republican candidates which is his record. With middle class families having said that. You cannot find a republican who doesnt say in 2016, weve got to be better about reaching out to the latino population. He could do that, right . He could absolutely do that. And he could do it in a way that is very genuine. But if that means backing an amnesty for illegal aliens, it will kill him in the republican primaries and turn off conservatives. Thats the problem you have. Its fundamentally unjust. It will hurt him in a general election. And we have seen that movie before. Thank you both. Happy holidays.
