Last week. They nypd says 8 to 10 kilograms of drugs were discovered under trapdoor in, the play area at the center. Where one year old nicholas had been sleeping. Three other children were hospitalized after suffering acute opioid intoxication, but they thankfully survived. The u. S. Attorney for the Southern District of new york said the owner of the daycare and others suspected, another suspect arrested, one a Distribution Business under the building. They are under federal with death and attention to distribute resulting in death. Police are still looking for the whole owners husband. The news continues, the source, with Kaitlan Collins starts now. Tonight, straight from the store, to complete chaos at the capitol, as even more republicans are revolting against House Speaker, Kevin Mccarthy, who is now saying they want to burn the house down, or at, least cause a shutdown. Plus, ukraines president zelenskyy meeting with President Biden today, and finding a different battle, this one for more funding. A real life succession, wet Rupert Murdoch exit from the fox empire could mean for the future American Politics. Im Kaitlan Collins, and this is the source. The government said to shut down in just nine days from now. Tonight, House Speaker Kevin Mccarthy sent his Republican Caucus home, for the rest of the week. Thats right, theyre leaving town without having done their job to actually fund the government. The white house is taking advantage of this. President biden posting this, single last time there was government shutdown, 800,000 americans were worked without pay, but hey, enjoy your weekend. Just yesterday, Kevin Mccarthy said he was going to keep those lawmakers in washington for a rare weekend session, so he could figure out a way to fund the government and get the Spending Bills passed that, so far, has proved elusive. Today, everything changed again. Mccarthy was dealt another block i, when several of his members voted down their own defense bill for the second time just this week. Maybe mccarthy is clearly flush rated. This is a whole new concept of people who want to bring the place down. There are no if im, this time, at least when we can hear, but the frustration was clear throughout his entire party. We are dysfunctional. It is just that simple. That simple. We are so dysfunctional. Weve got nobody at the head, this trains left the station. Its frustrating, because youre gonna hear and our defense, and theyre not gonna have rational explanations. Its absurd. Im not going to be a party shut down. The dysfunction could not have been clear than when republicans were voting against their own bill. This is a bill to fund the pentagon. A no votes on debating a bill is basically voting against your own leadership. It rarely happens, and just for context on where that is, the last 28 years, the house has only failed to pass what is called to rule eight times. So far, in only eight months since hes been speaker, mccarthy has now lost three of those votes. They have happened just this week. Lets get straight to the source tonight, with republican Congressman Tim from tennessee. Congressman, you are still in capitol hill, but everybody else is obviously going home today. Why is the house going home without any of this being result . Actually, they sense another singer in the whipped office this afternoon, to stay. So, a lot of people have turned around and theyre coming back. I am not leaving. Weve got work to do. I think it really sets a bad example to the American Public, that, in fact, we worked these massive twohour days appear in washington since ive been here for five years. Well, take a couple of hours for lunch, will cater in a pizza or something, and then call in early day. People in tennessee, weve got teachers, moms, lawyers, policeman, firemen, people i worked with i just cant believe this, and the amount of money were paid. So, its very dysfunctional right now, but most of us are back and i understand appropriations is meeting in the morning, and i would hope they would make it an early morning. Do you think anything will actually get done in the last few days. We got some relief, and my colleague, matt gaetz, from florida, is working very hard on an issue. The problem we had is voting on single issue bills. They put the crs, continued resolutions, and then we say, were going to pass a for 30 days, and we need to pass this continued resolution so we can get off continued resolutions the next time. Well, thats like telling a Heroin Addict were going to get you off heron by giving you more heroin. It just does not work. They pass whats called bill close to christmas, this has been historically under speaker pelosi, and its worked very well for her. But, i do not like passing if she says passing something so you know whats in it. Thats exactly what a bill is. 2000 pages, and jewelry down till you find something in your district, and then you stop voting. What you are talking about here, and what the arguments have been about . Between you . And your colleagues over not agreeing on this, is really just a messaging bill. The spending cuts that republicans are fighting over so furiously, have no chance of getting past the senate. So, what is the ultimate plan here . Youre working to pass something that will not actually go anywhere. I would flip that on you and say what the senate is working on has no chance of passing in the house. Were supposed to be equal bodies, and i just do not buy that rational. Theres 435 of us, and granted we have our differences, but we are one of the three branches of government. So, i would hope in the future, people would see that. Thats a pretty Common Knowledge thing, but still, i understand what youre saying that theyre not going to pass what we want. When you negotiate, say for instance, i passed the speed limit in tennessee, steve cohen and i have all people, pass to speed women in tennessee, we asked for 85 and took 70. In the beginning, they were asking for a 1 cut, like thats going to do anything when we just passed 33 trillion Million Dollar mark of that. We do that by passing to the resolutions. Now, were going to be able to vote on individual appropriations, and loan below today will vote on for them. Congressman, even if you vote on those individual bills, are you going to be able to get all of that done to the senate, have them send it back to you with their changes, obviously as you are noting, its a negotiation here. But, is not going to be able to be done by next sunday, or do you think the government is going to shut down here . Why not, 24 hours in a day, and we work about four of them appear. Then we walk out in our suits with our coats over our shoulders and our sleeves rolled up, telling the American Public that we actually worked, when in reality they know we have not. So, i would submit to you, lets work over the weekend. Im here, majority of us are. Here are using that to other republicans, because im not a republican or a member of congress, are using it to other speakers . I tweeted about, it i have over 95,000 followers. The other members are saying that just as well. We made that very clear in the meeting with emmert this afternoon, and got his number two man. So, i think leadership understands that, and they understand our frustration. So yes, maam, i would say thats a valid point, and it has been taken by leadership. Obviously im a little skeptical, because we had Mike Johnston here last night. He said the hardliners were in agreement. Clearly, they were not. So, is it identical to new agreement . Former President Donald Trump is weighing in on this, he saying that there should be a shutdown. He does not in favor of a short term bill and says you and your colleagues should not supported, and apparently believing it to a halt to special counsels prosecutions. Do you think he understands that a shutdown does not do that, it does not stop jack smiths investigations and ongoing prosecutions . No maam, you have to do a specific amendment to the bill to do that. I believe its called, and thats where you take a specific minot them and can literally flatten out an office, which is used for people that have been in there too long and theyre abusive. Ive heard this, the only people ive heard it from oddly enough i reporters today. I was with the president i guess a little over a month ago, and he never brought up the. But, i have not heard from him since then about that. So, i have no idea if thats what his plan is. I mean he posted that. But you agree the shutdown has nothing to do with jack smiths investigation . No maam, i dont believe it does, it has to be specific, so i would say a specific amendment to the bill. One focus, and we heard how frustrated Speaker Mccarthy was earlier saying those hardliners want to burn the house down as he framed it. Do you believe he emerge from this in his job intact . I dont know, but i think its a poor choice of words. We dont want to burn the house down, we just want to be sound. Thats what we ran for, thats why i believe we have a slim majority, because we havent pushed it out to the American Public, just a billions and billions of dollars that were wasting daily. We sent 140 Billion Dollars to ukraine unchecked, and then the people in maui cant even get anything, and people in pennsylvania after the Chemical Spill are still waiting. I just think our priorities are out of whack. I now understand if we shut down do you still support him speaker . I have my questions. I have my doubts right now, because i am seeing we need leadership, man. We dont need somebody to say we got 218 votes or whatever that jumped on the train after it leaves the station. We need some people. Speaker pelosi, for instance, i would give you, i dont agree with her ever, hardly on anything, but she was pretty successful in the way she did it. She put an issue out for caucus, she met with them, she got a figured out what they want, they put on the floor, and passed it. A lot of work goes into that, but we are not seeing that, im not seeing that work right now, and its very disappointing to me. A rare complement from a republican for speaker pelosi. Shes a friend of mine, she has a granddaughter named isabelle, and so do i, and my daughter got hurt real bad last year, when she actually won the World Championship in her division, as speaker pelosis always ask me about her. So, yeah. Love to hear that. We hope your daughter is recovering well. Congressman, you have a lot going on, thank you tim burchett, for joining us. Thanks for having me on, its been a pleasure as always. Joined now by New York Times senior political correspondent, maggie haberman, and former White House Communications alyssa vera griffiths. Not only worked in trump house, you worked on capitol hill during a time of, some would say chaos when the Freedom Caucus was getting rid of speaker boehner. Have you ever seen anything like we are seeing played out now . For some historic context, i was there one of the times that was taken down by the republicans. The tp a vote. Listen, this is an ex threat to Kevin Mccarthy. I think you asked the key questions that, could anyone other than him gets 18 . A couple things to look at, these five from the right, and i know these guys very well, tend to be veiled as fiscal fights. This is about addressing deficits and budgets. Im sorry, but i worked in the trump administration, we spent as much as most democratic administrations. Oftentimes, its something more partisan that theyre trying to do. Defund the lead counsel, or the jackson investigation. I suspect what will ultimately end this, if anything does, will be some kind of a concession on the more political side. Whether it has to do it more investigations, something on the oversight committee, i think for a handful of members like this gentlemen, its really about spending, but for those driving it like a gate side, i dont think its what it is. Frankly, i do not know that anybody can get to a that Kevin Mccarthy has the best chance of holding on to. Well see. What do you think of trump weighing in last night, republicans should not pass the shortterm bill which Kevin Mccarthy was trying to get republicans behind. He has this hope that it would affect his investigations, but as the congress made clear, it would not. Its not going to. I think realistically, donald trump has been told that by advisers. I think hes aware that this is the case. He has repeatedly done things that make life more complicated for Kevin Mccarthy. Kevin mccarthy had various points at the things that have upset for President Trump including not endorsing him, which we are aware of. So, i dont think its a surprise that he is twisting the knife here, i think trump is much more aligned with these members who as, alyssa says, are talking about fiscal responsibility, and some of them believe, its but many of them are talking about other things. This is a little different from some of the early days of, say, the tea party, when that first wave came in, when it was much more about spending. Its now become about all sorts of other things. Trump cares about all sorts of things, spending is sort of theoretical. Certainly he is not obsessed hes on a fiscal conservative. What was remarkable today, and kind of encapsulated for people, its always chaotic on capitol hill, watching republicans vote down their own Defense Spending Bill for the second time. We spoke with Chairman Michael earlier today, he said hes ever seen that happen in his 20 years. Keep in mind, you have tommy tuberville, blocking pentagon promotions. The republican party, my party, is quickly waiting to become in the anti defense, particularly because these political fights are happening on the hill. But, by the way, Government Funding is one thing, faa authorization is coming up, Farmville Authorization is coming up next week, and, by the way, if republicans shut down the government, their own impeachment inquiry which slows to launch next week will not happen. So, thats the one thing that makes me think the government may stay open. All this is happening while were also watching the broader 2024 field. We heard from nikki haley today, who is doing better in New Hampshire poll, shes in the race for second place. She obviously worked for trump, and was commenting saying this about his legacy. It was the right president at the right time. He used to be good on foreign policy, and now he started to walk its back and get week in the news when it comes to ukraine. He was thin skinned and easily distracted. Some things are true there, and some were not. What you said about he used to be strong about ukraine, that was a different period of time that i witnessed anyways during the impeachment, the first impeachment battle, which is about trump trying to withhold improved military and ukraine. In terms of being scammed, i dont think anybodys taking issue with that characterization. I do think youre seeing nikki haley carve out a pretty interesting space of separation from donald trump. You are correct, she was moving, not just in New Hampshire, but in other states as well, the campaigns are all talking about it as well that she is a threat to desantis, but a threat to anybody else in the nontrump lane. Look, she has a Delegate Line to walk because she did serve him, because she did the phantom any number of times. I think one of the things that is complicating for a lot of the folks in this current field who have praised trump at various points, some of them still very much so, like the ramaswamy, is trying to reconcile to voters what israel. Kaitlan, donald trump is not a different donald trump. What my gableman, alyssa griffin, thank you both for joining me. Ukraines president got a mixed reception on capitol hill today, perhaps a taste of what it would be like if donald trump returns to power as republicans in the house are turning their backs on more aid for his war. Plus, a Surprise Announcement from one of the most powerful people in the media world. Rupert murdoch retiring. If youre looking for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan thats smart now. Im 65. Ukrainian president , was in washington city, pleading for more help us his country is still facing an onslaught of new russian attacks. White house announced a new aid package to the 325 million. There is a stark difference in zelenskyys reception, compared to his visit last year. This time, there are no Cheering Crowds or waving ukrainian flags, or Joint Session Of Congress for him to address. You can see on the right, he was just escorted through the halls by senator schumer and mcconnell. This could be a Potential Foreshadowing of whats to come if donald trump is reelected, and republican skepticism of funding the work continues to grow. Here with me now, democratic senator of minnesota. Senators, so glad you are joining me tonight. You are in the closeddoor meeting with president zelenskyy today, what was the most important thing you heard from him . The passion, the incredible work that he is doing to protect democracy, not just in ukraine but across the world, let me tell you, there were two Standing Ovations for him. The crowd was nearly all the senators, democrats, and republicans were there. I did not detect that way of support, i see a senate that passed with 86 of 100 senators voting for the defense bill. I see mitch mcconnell, and Chuck Schumer standing together for ukraine then, later this afternoon, at the archives, where no lost symbolism there, constitution declaration of independence, you see president zelenskyy, declaring that ukrainians are defending freedom and Global Security every day and every night. Kids are there and soldiers without legs, children without hands, and the american doctors and have fix them, that have made their lives better, that have given prosthetics. It was very emotional, people were crying, and i saw every bit of emotion that i saw in the past, in fact, stronger results as we know. China is watching right now. We know that this scrappy Ukrainian Military has taken back 50 of what this superpower russia took away from them since the invasion began. So, i see momentum, and i see incredible, strong spirits in president zelenskyy that has guided his country through this. We see much more support for ukraine from the senate. You saw senator mcconnell walking with senator but on the house side, its a different story. Speaker Kevin Mccarthy avoided being seen in public when zelenskyy, we did see the photos of them together in private. But, hes not committing to putting more aid for ukraine up for vote in the house. Obviously, how the senate would deal with that is an open question. Do you think congress is going to be able to get another package for ukraine passed . I do, i think you know that as you just discussed on your panel that Speaker Mccarthy has a lot going on. He did say after, the meeting, i heard reports that he heard some good things. Youve got a number of republicans over in the house standing with ukraine. Yes, you have some people. I would like to ask them to their faces, what do you think china is going to think if we withdraw . What are allies going to take as they are stepping up aid, countries like norway, pledging billions and billions of dollars. This america leads, and america stands with their friends and allies. That is what this is about. To see this juxtaposed with tommy tuberville, holding up hundreds and hundreds of military nominations, as family sets in limbo, it does make me wonder, whos side are you on here . Democratic leadership is on the side of our military, our soldiers, and of Democracy For America and across the world. Senator, on another note, bill before you go, i know this is something that is really important to you given how last month we saw the white house announce which those first that are going to be subject to the medicare price associations. You are part of a brief in court right now, over the issue, do you think youll ultimately be successful here . I do. Basically, 20 years ago, for some reason, congress agreed to form a language that Put Industry Cardio in writing, thats basically blocked negotiation on behalf of the nations 50 million seniors for a less expensive drugs. As a result, theyre paying 250 more for drugs and other industrialized nations. Its crazy, under the president s leadership, i lead the bill forever, we finally got it passed. First ten drugs announced. Things like celestial, the new via, ella quit, these drugs, just last year 9 million americans forked out 3. 4 billion, not million, billion dollars in costs. This isnt a big deal, this is as the president has a big deal. You got ten jobs out there, first, next is going to be 15 more, then 15 more. You got caps on the insulin at 35 a month for seniors who want to expanded. You got out of pocket costs, limited to 2,000 per year that youre going to see rolling out in 2025 and there are legislation. I cannot wait to see President Biden make that point in a debates. Everybody talked about bringing down former costs, hes doing it, and its democrats in the senate and the house that passed a bill. Weve heard a lot of farms dropped on capitol hill lately. Senator, thank you for censoring yours for us tonight. I would always sensor. Thank you. I was only quoting the president. That makes it okay. Thanks so much senator amy klobuchar. See you. Coming up next, he said he would never retire, but now Rupert Murdoch is doing just that, hanging up his hat and he has picked his successor. Rupert murdoch the chief of the most influential media on the world, is now stepping down. 92yearold chairman announced today that his son will serve as the sole chairman of both companies. This new sent shockwaves across the media, and political spectrum. Murdaugh did express confidence that his son would carry on the torch. He said in a memo, quote, he is committed to the cause. For more of the fallout and the future of fox, i want to bring in jim ruttenberg, a journalist and writer for the New York Times. Jim, did you see this coming . Rupert murdoch is 92 years old. So, to some degree, i saw this coming eventually. I do not see it coming this morning. So, in that regard, it certainly was a surprise. Also, he has always said he would leave his office first. He has talked about never retiring, thats why i think part of this was surprising to people who have been following. Do you think it has anything to do with the fact that this is coming five months after we saw all of that 787 Million Dollar defamation settlement, coming . The Lawsuit Foxes dealing with, in addition to what they saw dominion. Is this a factor in why he is stepping down now . I have had no indication, and some of our reporting has shown, per se, that dominion was a factor. Obviously, that was an awful moment for the company, the lawsuit, obviously got them into that trouble. There is a pending lawsuit, but his decision to retire will not affect the lawsuit in that Rupert Murdaugh would still have to testify. He was still in charge. So, it doesnt get him out of any legal issues that are still pending. I think him putting his oldest son in charge here, theres questions about what the future of fox looks like. Hes someone whos criticize trump in the past, he told people that trump running again, he believed it will be bad for the country. They fired Tucker Carlson not too long ago. And what is the future of fox for people who are wondering with this change tonight . Right now, i would not expect change. So far, all indications are that loughlin believes in continuity. Hes always defending the position of the network at large. There is one thing that i am very interested in seeing, after covering the company and the family for 20 years, Loughlin Murdaugh has never been running the company outside his father shadow. While his father will still be around, this is now, for now at leave, his company. So, its his chance to put a stamp on it, and i for one im very eager to see without a look like. Obviously, given the influence of the company, it is more than just near curiosity, itll be very important in terms of politics. You said for now at least, what is your speculation on the timing and how long he can be there . There is a show on hbo called succession. There is a looming succession battle within the family. Rupert murdoch, not long ago, set some terms, dealing with the day he dies. When he dies, he said, it would be up to his four eldest children to figured out amongst themselves in terms of whos gonna be in control of the company. He, rupert, has put the thumb on for lockland. The solidifies the company. There are many, and to a particular model the most. However, there could be a fight because other siblings. His brother, james, who is now outside the company, has been seed as someone who made raleigh. His two other siblings, his sisters Two Out Vote Loughlin should that day Rupert Murdochs 92, it should be said his mother died shortly before her 104th birthday. What else are you going to be watching . What is the biggest impact of this is going to have . Im going to be watching what it means, for one, in terms of 2024. Will loughlin murdoch play the out front role that his father played in American Politics and Global Politics . You mentioned, just a minute ago, that loughlin had his problems about President Trump, former President Trump, but former President Trump is still very popular with the base. So, if they say true to form, under lachlan the, network will lower the readings. Go well lachlan do Something Different . Will he take the company in a different direction . Not expected, but we do not know what thats going to look like, and again, to me, thats a huge question thats about more than this company. Major questions. Jim, thank you for covering it and joining us tonight. Thank you so much. President biden meanwhile sending hundreds of more troops to the border as migrants are overwhelming the texas town of eagle pass tonight. There are the stunning scenes playing out, little children crawling through razor wire. A former Homeland Security secretary will talk to us next. About the crisis, and what the solutions can be, that is next you can take at home, onceamonth. And it was proven superior at reducing the rate of relapses vs aubagio. For me, a onceamonth treatment just works for my schedule. Dont take kesimpta if you have hepatitis b, and tell your doctor if you have had it, as it could come back. Kesimpta can cause serious side effects, including infections. While no cases of pml were reported in rms clinical trials, it could happen. Tell your doctor if you had or plan to have vaccines, or if you are or plan to become pregnant. Kesimpta may cause a decrease in some types of antibodies. The most common side effects are upper respiratory tract infection, headache, and injection reactions. Ask your doctor about treating rms with kesimpta. Tonight, up to 800 active duty troops are headed to the southern border, as the mayor of texas is now declared a state of emergency. Thousands of migrants have been attempting to cross the rio grande, a journey thats so risky, a three year around. 3000 migrants crossing to the u. S. On wednesday alone. The mayor is now clearly frustrated, and also calling out President Biden. I believe, 100 , he bears responsibility for this crisis. Nobody has bothered to call me, any one of the city staff saying, hey, this is a federal government, we know what youre going through, were worried about you, this is our plan of action, nothing. I should note, thick razor wire has not been deterring people from crossing. People are desperately fleeing poverty and persecution. Families are even threatening their small children, as you can see here, through the tangled wires. Joining me now for this crisis, i should note is former Homeland Security secretary under thank you for being here. I want to talk about what the potential solutions are. When you hear that news, that a three year old was killed making this journey, i mean, what goes through your mind . First, caitlin, i think its important to remember that the people at the center of the storm, the migrants, are almost all helpless harmless people who are desperate for a better life in america. They live in the most impoverished, violence, regions of our planet, and theyre desperate to get here, even if it means making a dangerous journey like the one you just described. So, the administration, the biden administration, may break, they were very effective in delivering the message there is a white way, rightly in a wrong way to come here and they emphasize that at the the title 42, and the numbers fell dramatically in may, just when everybody thought the numbers would go up dramatically. My take on this whole thing, and i learned this lesson when i was in office managing this problem myself, is that illegal immigration react sharply, and quickly to information about perceived changes and Enforcement Policy here. But, and heres the big but, as long as the underlying push factors persist in places like venezuela, guatemala, honduras, haiti, cuba, the numbers are always going to revert back to long return turmoil. The numbers are up again, it was Something Like 177,000 crossings in july. Ive heard Something Like 140,000 and so far in september. So, we need to address the underlying push factors. Otherwise, were going to continue to vanguards against the wall, administration after administration after administration. Theyre going to keep coming, and theres no level of defense or wall or barbed wire that will prevent that, unfortunately. Im glad you brought that up, because what we heard from the department of Homeland Security, which used to run, is that in the next three months, 800 additional troops are going to be there helping National Guard members with things like ground based detection, data entry, transportation, but not enforcement itself. Is that enough . The u. S. Military in this country does not engage in domestic law enforcement. The most they can do is support the border patrol, supported department of Homeland Security, and its Frontline Border of security mission. So, given the numbers we face, its not enough, its never going to be enough, were going to have to deal with the underlying factors, there are aspects of our Immigration Policy that to serve as magnets. The wait time for an asylum claim, for example, is contributing to this problem. I dont see this problem going away anytime soon, as long as there is this Political Polarization in washington that prevents addressing the longer term problem. There are solutions to this problem, kaitlin, but they are politically unobtainable, as long as the factions in washington are so deeply divided about this issue. House republicans arent even passing Spending Bills, much less going on immigration. One of the places were seeing this play out is right here in new york city, there is a feud with the governor, the city mare, with the white house, the point the finger at each other. I know you met with mayor adams, did you give many advice . I didnt meet would maryland on monday. Hes a very big problem. The largest most powerful city in the country cannot absorb 100,000 new people in its population in eight months. It is blowing a big haul, A Billion Dollar hole in his budget. He needs the help of the federal government. We at the federal level like to say, Immigration Law and policy is primarily the role of the federal government. That is true. The federal government, therefore, has in my view, an obligation to help cities and communities in the interior deal with this problem, once these migrants across the border and theyre here. So, what should they be doing differently, what does the administration need to do to help new york and other cities are dealing with this . Announced just in the last 24 hours or so that its granting Temporary Protected Status for venezuelans thatll help them get Work Authorizations quicker and put them to work, contrary to the talks space. But, more broadly, places like new york and l. A. And chicago need money. They need resources to provide shelter, to help them out, to absorb this. New york city is facing a major, major, but a deficit because of the crisis. They need to find other things like public safety. So, my hope is that the federal government will step up and help these cities that are absorbing this problem in the interiority of our nation. Well see if that changes. I know City Officials are deeply concerned. Jeh johnson, thank you for taking the time to join us tonight. Thank you. You saw a serious bling out here all week on cnn. It is time to meet another one. Tonight cnns chief International Anchor Christiane Amanpour introduces us to an african journalist forced to flee her country after the talibans return to power two years ago. Now she is working in exile to highlight the stories and the resilience of afghan women. She has been running absolutely everything. She is quiet and very modest and very humble, but you can see the fire there. My colleagues and other independent journalists, they are taking a hard risk. Sara is dedicated to telling the stories of afghan women. In fact she started rock shana, very first website that was for women and by women, only the way her journalists work now is dramatically different since the talibans return. Afghanistan is not safe for a woman and four journalists. Ive been covering afghanistan since before 9 11 when the taliban was first in charge. Hello for five years the religious beliefs issued a series of edicts against women, banning them from wearing makeup, from wearing high heels, banning them from work, from education. But their restrictions and their draconian crackdowns on women now are just as bad, perhaps worse than they were two decades ago. Afghan women are afraid that this is the beginning of your efforts to erase them from the work space. You have a long experience of defying the taliban. You were in afghanistan the first time they came. Yes. How did you get around their hands on Girls Education . So i wore boys clothes. Boys clothes . Yes boys cloth. And i went with my two uncles to school. I lived in a small village two hours going to school and back. It was so important to even as a young kid that you are willing to take on that hardship . Exactly. Education changed my life. All of the people who are interviewing with us and my colleagues, all of them are anonymous because of their safety. We cant grant the safety of all our journalist. What would happen if they were caught . What is the punishment . If the taliban arrests them, im sure they will be tortured, imprisoned and maybe they will be killed. Are they scared . Of course. And yet they keep doing it . They are very brave. Zahra told me The Story Of A Mother who was living in such desperate poverty she was ready to salt one of her children in order to have the others survive. We finally published the story. Our audience came to us and reached out to us and said we want your support to help this mother. Thats really powerful. Traditional afghan food. Zara had to flee kabul when the taliban took over in 2021, and shes ended up here in london trying to form a new community, that is still dedicated to driving positive change in her home country. That exchange uplifting stories as well as sad stories at least that is happening. So even if you are somewhere in afghanistan where there is absolutely zero access to education you still will be able to read roxana media and still get a sense of what your sisters are going through. To you ever hope, believe that you will be able to return home . I really wished so, i really miss my country. Shes got this really, almost infectious ambition and drive. Shes so strong, shes so committed to what she believes in. Such a special story and to see her still doing her work, you can tune in on saturday at 8pm eastern.
