To reporters just now trying to get information about what happened. How are you feeling secretary clinton . Are you feeling better within. Yes, thank you very much. Senior correspondent jeff zeleny has been working his sources and joins us now. Jeff, what have you learned . We doe know she was at the ground zero ceremony for 90 minutes or so. It was 82 degrees or so, very muggy. But her Campaign Says she knelt overheated and left. But it was the abrupt departure there. We have a statement from her campaign. Lets take a look at that. He says this, secretary clinton attended the september 11th ceremony for an hour and 30 minutes this morning to pay her respects and greet the families of the fallingen. She felt overheated and is feeling much better. Thats the only official word and statement from the Clinton Campaign. We saw her walking out of had her daughters apartment in the Flat Iron District of manhattan a short time ago. She said shes feeling great. A reporter shouted a question to her, but she did not come over and answer any questions or explain what happened in her own words. E we know there have been questions from the other side, her critics from donald trump who says Campaign Rally after rally shes low energy and not feeling well. This will feed into those sort of lingering questions that are out there. But right now were told shes heading back to her home and will be unscheduled the rest of the day on the heels of a threeday west coast swing. One of the reasons why this is becoming perhaps not the headlines that Hillary Clinton and her Campaign Want is because they were not initially transparent about what had happened. Theres a pool of report irs that travels with her. They were cordoned off from her and other politicians at the commemoration. Clinton left the event and the pool reporters had not even been informed. Then we didnt roll the tape at the beginning, but she is walks out of the apartment. Come over here and tell us what happened. She says its a Beautiful Day in new york and walks away from them. So theres a transparency issue thats not helping her apparently u. Theres a transparency issue. Theres a protective pool around her and her rival. Any time a candidate becomes the nominee they are surrounded by a pool of reporters. They were not told what happened and they were left behind not entirely unusual. It happens sometimes with the president and president ial candidates leaving their reporters behind. But it took them awhile to get a statement out here as they were trying to figure out how she was doing. This raises the question of transparency here Going Forward. She and donald trump have been less transparent about their medical records than any other candidates in recent memory. They have released very little information. Shes released much more than donald trump has. A letter from her doctor saying shes in Perfect Health to serve, but they have not given their medical records like other recent candidates have. So you have to wonder if they will release more of those records. We know about her hospitalization in 2013, her blood clot. The challenge is to be transparent without feeding into conspiracy theories that are out there. Her doctor several months ago put out a letter saying shes a healthy 67yearold and suffers from seasonal pollen allergies is what the campaign blames for her consistent cough shes had. After a fainting spell and concussion in 2012, she suffered a blood clot between her brain and skull, which her doctor now says its clear and fine. You have to wonder Going Forward will they release more medical records simply to move beyond this. Its interesting to note the ages of both candidates are quite high. 68 and 69 years old would be the oldest president. So the American Voters have less information about both candidates than in other recent memory. Certainly not in the list of time, but recent campaigns. John mccain released a whole bunch of information as did mitt romney and barack obama. Jeff zeleny, thank you. Today is the 15th anniversary of the september 11th attacks. Americans gathered to reflect and remember. Read the names of the dead at ground zero. Almost 3,000 of them. The president honored victims in a ceremony at the pentagon and in pennsylvania bells rang to remember the passengers and crew, those heroic men and women. Its an intense emotional day for all americans and the gatherings through the top officials. Ground sozero, two new yorkers clinton and donald trump arrived to pay respects. That was before clinton left the ceremony after being overheated. With us now to talk about National Security is a former acting director of the cia. Hes supporting Hillary Clinton now. Thank you for being here. We appreciate it. Do you know anything about Hillary Clintons health . Youre not a campaign person but you have endorsed her. One is i was with her on friday at a National Security session in new york. She looked fantastic u. She had high energy. The other thing i would say is there are times in all of our lives where we dont feel well. I missed some of the briefings after 9 11 because i wasnt feeling well. Lets not make more of this than there is. I want to move on. I want to talk about one other thing which is Hillary Clinton at a fundraiser referring to half of donald trump eegs supporters as being in a basket of deplorables. She said that she regrets now saying half, but lets play that sound if we can. Just be grossly general iist, you could put half of trumps supporters into the basket of deplorables. Racist, sexist, homophobic, islam phobic, you name it. Shes since said she regrets saying half, but she maintains that donald trump does have the supporters who are deplorable. Its a pretty, as she said herself a gross generalization to describe millions of americans that way. Ill let what e she said stand. She said she regrets saying it. Ill leave it there. Are you troubled at all in the same way she seems to be . I think theres some people who are supporting him because of the things he has said. And i worry about those people too. So ill leave it at that. I want to talk about National Security issues, which is obviously why youre here. I would also note and i know i dont have to remind you this in addition to being the anniversary of the september 11th attacks in 2001, its also the anniversary of the the benghazi attacks in which we lost four brave americans. You were at the cia at the time. What lessons would you say you learned from that day . I think the key lesson, and i think this has been lost all the way around, all along, this whole episode, is that because violent extremism, the ideology has spread so far in places like libya and places like syria and iraq and yemen where we might have facilities we have to protect them as if they are war zones. And that means ringing them with security, that means having the kind of intelligence you have on the ground in a war zone to protect yourself from people who are trying to attack you. Thats the main lesson learned. Is there also a lesson, a lot of people criticize ued the white house for being focused on the narrative this wasnt a terrorist attack. This was because of the antimuslim video. Also a a lesson in making sure that white house is transparent about what happens and doesnt get swept up in a political narrative . Two things. One is there is no dichotomy between the video possible cause ing the attack and it being a terrorist attack. It can be both of those things. Thats been lost on a lot of people. The only guy whose been arrested and brought to justice for this attack told the fbi that one of the two reasons e he conducted the attack was because of the video. So theres this idea that one of the guys said it was the video. So in terms of the politics of this for me the lesson is when it becomes political, get all the information out there saz fast as you possibly can. Thats the political lesson for me. You have a scathing oped in the Washington Post this weekend written alongside your fellow National Security expert. Mike vickers. Formerly with whom you used to work. Then youd also written one in the New York Times previously in which you suggested that donald trump was an unwitting agent of Vladimir Putin and the russian federation. Are you being facetious there or do you really think hes been dupe d by Vladimir Putin . Im not being facetious at all. I think Vladimir Putin considers him an unwitting agent. Thats something who does what you want them to do without them knowing youre doing it on their behalf. Putin played to trump by telling trump what he wanted to hear, which is im a great guy, im smarter than anybody else, im a great person. Putin played to that. Hes a trained intelligence officer. He knows how to play u to people. What was the result . Donald trump in turn praising Vladimir Putin. Donald trump saying that we might not defend theba baltices. It might be o okay that putin grabbed crimea. Donald trump is a great leader. All of that plays right into putins hands. So absolutely i think putin sees him as an unwitting agent. Hillary clinton said something about Vladimir Putin telling chris cuomo that Vladimir Putin has tried to disrupt elections here in the United States. I u know that some counterterrorism officials believe that some of the hacks the dnc one in particular were done by Russian Hackers. Is there actual evidence that Vladimir Putin is trying to disrupt this election . I have not seen the evidence. Im not in the government anymore. Im not in the Intelligence Community. But putin has a long track record of interfering in the elections of the countries around russia and former soviet uni union. Using cyber operations, information operations, paying political parties, hes done some of that in western europe. I believe that he is behind the hack of the dnc. I believe that he has given those emails to wikileaks and i believe theres a plan to string those out to make her look bad. He wants donald trump to win this election. In part because of the romance between the two. And in part because putin does not believe that Hillary Clinton will be easy on russia. Can putin and or these Russian Hackers who youre suggesting answered to him, can he actually affect the election not just in terms of the propaganda or materials or e emails but in change iing the results of the election. He might think he can have an kmalkt, but i dont believe thats possible. In 2012 when mitt romney said u that russia was the nations number one geopolitical foe and they mocked him for it, i think that its possible that romney was right and the generals all say russia is the number one geopolitical foe. I think a lot of people out there watching think you werent saying that in 2012. But a lot of people are getting whiplash. They are saying now russia is our number one foe. Four years ago the media was mocking republicans for saying that. I i wouldnt say russia is the number one foe. Counterterrorism, top of the list. North korea, russia, china, they are all in a group at the top. Russia has been an adversary for a long time. Somebody who has been in the intelligence business knows that. They never stopped play iing th intelligence game. This is a bad guy. This is a thug and a bully. S that guy who only understands relative power. This is a guy that doesnt believe its possible to sit down and have a negotiation. This is a guy who if he punches you in the face, you have to punch him back in the face. Its a pleasure to have you on the show. Good to be with you. I hope its a meaningful day for you. Thank you so much. Stay with us. For the latest on Hillary Clintons health, well have a live report after the break. Stay with us. This ones got detachable keys it comes with a pen so you can write as you please this mac doesnt have any of that its less useful like a hat for your cat surface has touch and a beautiful screen you can see things like theyve never been seen this mac doesnt quite compare its slower, heavy, and a bit square fold it in half, hello when you start lighter than air, you can doodle a heart yes its plain to see the surface pro 4 is made for me hahaha umhmmm hey nikki what are you doing here . Lets get us a man with unlimited data. Why pay verizon more for data limits . Introducing tmobile one. One price. Unlimited data for everyone. Mornin. Hey, do you know when the game starts . 11 hours. Oh. Well, im heading back to my room. announcer want to wake up at super bowl 51 . Super bowl announcer enter courtyards super bowl sleepover contest at courtyard. Com for your chance to win. More now on this hours breaking news. We have just received video of Hillary Clinton stumbling as she left the 9 11 commemoration. A statement from the Clinton Campaign said she felt overheated and went to her daughters apartment to get her barings. Lets watch this vid crow for a second. You see her apparently almost falling but caught by people presumably secret Service Agents around her. A little while ago we saw her leave the Apartment Building and wave to reporters, looking better than in the vid crow were showing now. She didnt have much to say just now but you can listen to how she responded to reporters shouted questions. How are you feeling Hillary Clinton . Are you feeling better . Yes, thank you very much. Thank you, everybody. Cnn reporter mj lee is outside Chelsea Clintons apartment where Hillary Clinton went to e recuperate. She didnt have much to say when e she left reporters. Asked her to come over and tell them what happened and she said its a Beautiful Day in new york. Thats right, jake. This has turned into a tense morning for Hillary Clinton. We are outside of Chelsea Clintons house in the Flat Iron District where she did leave before noon. You heard her same she was feeling great. We dont know the extent. The only thing the campaign told us is she was feeling overheated and thats why she came to her daughters home here cutting the kmcommemoration a little bit early. Now keep in mind that the campaign very much wanted today to be free of politics, but for sure we know that the issues about her health and what happened this morning are certain to fuel questions about Hillary Clintons health, trump allies and critics have continued to bring up questions about whether she is in a good state of health to assume the white house in the office of the white house. This is something that could be renewed because of what happened this morning. The other question is also whether this ends up affecting her travel. Tomorrow she is set to head west to do a west coast swing going to san francisco, los angeles, so well be in touch with the campaign to see whether this ends up affecting her Campaign Schedule this it week. Thank you so much. Appreciate it. Lets bring in our panel to talk more about this and other issues. With us is diane black, kirsten pow powers and commentator andre bauer. Let me start with you and questions about a candidates health. We can talk about ronald reagan, bob dole, john mccain, now were talking about a democratic candidate. Lets take a look at that video we just got in a second ago of Hillary Clinton getting into her vehicle and seeming to have some trouble standing as she gets into the vehicle. So it looks like somebody having trouble standing and could be explained away, but also she did have that serious episode when she had the blood clot in it her brain in 2012. We were talking about this earlier when we were watching this. Shes had two incidents. One she coughed and the other she overheated. Thats the series of incidents shes had that have been medical needs. Shes actually provided more information than donald trump has. Does she need to provide more . Thats a legitimate question to ask. The only time the Republican Party seems to care about Womens Health is hillarys health. We need to talk about real issues affecting this campaign. Today is not a day for hol picks. She got overheated and we need to move on and talk about the issuesover the day. I do agree with that. Im a nurse. I u dont want to speculate what went on with Hillary Clinton. We dont know. Thats up to the physicians to determine. But what i will say is im concerned about her policies on health care. I look at my state of tennessee and the Affordable Care act is imploding there. 63 will be the rise in premiums. We lost our coop. Im more concerned about what shes saying about health care. True health care for our nation and my state. I think it will be up to the doctors to make that decision. I u think its probably legitimate to ask what is her health. She has to be honest with the American People whether shes healthy enough to serve the k n country. It is just an accurate fact yule matter whatever you think of Hillary Clintons health, donald trump has disclosed less information. Hes 70 years old. Hillary clinton is 68. Would it be a good idea for both candidates o it get all the Health Information as is normally done as barack obama, mitt romney, john mccain did . It would be. I think the voters would like to know. It would be the fact that we have two candidates that would be the older candidates to serve in the presidency makes the question more one that people would be interested in. John mccain turned over a great dole more of his Health Records as well. He did absolutely. He had some cancer scares as well. You think the media is mamaking big of a deal . If its donald trump, we would be talking about it. But we have to remember when we talk about her having health issue,s its a coughing fit. I have had this before. This could be dehydration or overtired or in the heat. So i dont think that necessarily means that she has some Serious Health issues. I mean, i remember the first george bush passing out in japan and hes been very healthy and lived a long time and has had no other real health issues. I dont think we can take away from this she has Serious Health issues. Im not trying to diminish what happened today, but i recall george bush him choking on a pretzel and e emerging with a bruise on his face and there were a ton of conspiracy theories about that. I was just going to say what is remarkable in this is that both of these candidates, the schedule they keep is grueling. All of us have been on the campaign trail and they run you as hard as they can. The fact that both of them are the age they are, they keep the growling schedule and the pressure and stress they are under, im amazed when i watch donald trump as late as he is and early as he is in the morning, both of them i have been amazed at their stamina. Youre a nurse. My mom is a nurse too. I know how hard a job it is. I appreciate youre not wanting to speculate. Do you agree both trump and clinton should get all these Health Records out there so the voters can make up their minds . I do agree. I think it is something we would like to know as we have someone thats going to serve our country. In really difficult situations as andre already said, theres a lot of the physical nature of these jobs that people dont realize early in the morning until late at night, youre going all day. Many times you dont get a chance to eat at normal times or in normal food. I do think we have to make sure who a whoever is going to be our commanderinchief is healthy. They age 20 years. Coming up, the Trump Campaign on offense as clinton tries to defend comments calling half of his supporters a basket of deplod deplorab deplorable. Thats next. Rockabye michael, your day is through. Cause sealys support is perfect for you. Only the sealy hybrid has Posturepedic Technology to support you where you need it most. Sealy. Proud supporter of you. Keeping the power lines clear,my job to protect public safety, while also protecting the environment. The Natural World is a beautiful thing, the work that we do helps us protect it. Public education is definitely a big part of our job, to teach our customers about the best type of trees to plant around the power lines. We want to keep the power on for our customers. We want to keep our community safe. This is our community, this is where we live. We need to make sure that we have a beautiful place for our children to live. Together, were building a better california. Grossly generalistic, you could put half of trumps supporters into what i call the basket of deplorls. Right . The racist, sexist, homophobic, islam phobic, you name it. Hillary clinton on friday evening basket of e deplorables enter into campaign flubs alongside mitt romneys 47 comments or Barack Obamas remark about some americans clinging to their guns and religion. Lets talk to our panel. Youre out there saying that this is not a gaffe in any way. I dont think its a gaffe in any way. I think theres a clear difference between the 47 remark and what Hillary Clinton said. The 47 showed mitt romneys towards the poor. I mean its very cloer. You think half of donald Trump Supporters are racist. I can show you polls where over half supporters believe that barack obama is a muslim informant and half of his supporters dont believe he was born in the United States. So i u can show you polls of that nature. This election is about bigotry. Not all donald Trump Supporters are bigots. However, they do have to be okay with supporting a bigot. I think thats important connotation. Let me play devils adds vo indicate. There are a lot of deplorable thing being said on social media and at events. You have seen the shirts that say things that i cant even say. Trump that b word. There are horrific things we see at those events. Let me say this. I dont care what the title is or whether its a republican or democrat. I dont want my president ial candidates putting people in baskets. I will tell you not 47 of the people in my district who support donald trump are racists or bigots. And i think its deplorable for someone running for president to start out by say figure you dont agree with me, youre a bigot or a racist. Thats what shes saying. Im insult ed by that. And i think the American People will be insulted by that. She said half and then took it back. But i didnt make the comments. Im not going to defend them. Take a welcolisten to governor pence capitalizing and talking about these remarks. They are not a basket of anything. They are americans and they deserve your respect. I have not heard that level of disdain for americans i cant even repeat. Since barack obama described people that opposed him as people who cling to their guns and religion. What did you think of the remarks . I thought it was a gaffe for sheer. Its never good. She regrets saying half. I think it would be right to say theres a disturbing percentage. Theres a larger percentage than normal of Trump Supporters who say sexist things and i think its different than what we have seen from other republican nominees. The people hes brought out. I dont mean to disagree with kirsten. E we put that on his supporters, but were talking about donald trump. Were talking about somebody who literally paul ryan said his comments ab the judge were racist. Then last week this is my issue, just last week he said all africanamericans, living in bad conditions, schools are bad, you may walk down the street and get shot. We classify that as outreach. Shes not criticizing donald trump. Thats different because there are a lot of people who are average supporters who arent racists. I dont think its good for a candidate. And possible president of the United States to be disparaging American Voters as a matter of politics. Let me show you a tweet that i noexed. Its the faces of the stars have been replaced with people such as donald trump and the trump sons and then david duke on the far right and david duke quoted is a code word for antiwhite. David duke is e deplorable. Absolutely. I can tell you this. I supported donald trump way back when. And i feel like we have become the divided states of america. I dont remember a political candidate getting into this much negativity. I u hope candidates will talk more about policies. The folks im talking to want to know what each candidate is going to do to improve their lives. Its alt delete. Change the whole process and they are fed up. They really are. So this is bigger than her taking a shot or him taking a shot. I think he has so many attributes he should be talking about instead of talking about hillary. I want to see him move in that direction. I want to add to that. Im a mother of three and grandmother of six. I have taught my children and grandchildren we dont call people names. That e we allow them to talk about what they believe in. We respect what they believe in. And i think for a president ial candidate, they need to get away from calling names on both sides. This is about teaching our children and our grandchildren of how to act, how to have a healthy relationship with other people that disagree with you and get away from the names. Lets talk about what it is that we disagree about. We can have strong disagreements on this, but i dont like calling people names. I e agree, but another part ant being a leader and something i have been begging the Republican Party and donald trump to do is that, yes, there are factions of deplorables. I dont have much respect for bigots i dont have much respect for bigots. And for people to actually for him to embrace that at certain points, i was backstage onset is when jake tapper asked him multiple times about david duke. He embraced that. And all im asking is i agree with you about name calling. But theres a certain point where you have to take leadership and say thats not what this kocountry is built up. The people who wear Confederate Flag tshirts at the rally, that pet ri u if is if is me. Thats not what our country is about. I will e agree they dont like it when folks in my own party call one another names. And especially when e we get on the National Scene where we have children and grandchildren watching this and saying look at these leaders calling each other names. How can i say when theymy grandchild gets called to the office for calling a name when they can point to the lead ers of our country. Lets not put people in baskets. Lets make America Great again. That was not the thing you were to do is call people names. Yes, i might disagree with you, but lets disagree. They want to know what the economy is going to do. They want to know if they are going to be safe in their own country. So much of the whole discussion now is about how bad the other candidate is. I want people to be excited because they are going out to e vote for a businessman who will be something totally different than what washington has seen in decades of where the direction of the country goes. It would be nice to cover a more pleasant race. I want to mention that the vid row we saw of clinton getting into her car earlier came from zenic. Cnn will continue following that story throughout the day. Coming up, 15 years after 9 11. Are we safer . Well talk to the secretary of the department of Homeland Security, next. Its been 15 years to the day since the 9 11 attacks. Have we become any safer as a nation since then . Before the start of todays ceremony in new york, i spoke with Homeland Security secretary jay johnson. Thank you for joining us. Thanks for having me on, jake. So i have to begin with the threat level facing the United States today. Are we on a heightened state of alert . I would characterize it this way, jake. Were on a constant state of alert against not only the terrorist directored attack of the 9 11 type, but terroristinspired attacks. The socalled lone wolf, home grown violent extremist of the type we have seen in orlando. Were in a relatively new environment now where we have to be concerned about the traditional threat as well as this new threat where al qaeda can reach into our homeland through the internet and social media to recruit and inspire people here, which makes for a more complex environment involving Law Enforcement and our Homeland Security people working hard to deal with it. Do you think that new threat environment means that we are not safer today than we were 15 years august . Good question. Were safer when it comes to the 9 11 style attack. Its plots against the homeland in our Intelligence Community are pretty good now at contacting those dots. We have this new environment and new threat, which e we just talked about which makes it harder and were seeing now attacks in orlando and San Bernardino that we have to protect against chrks is why i continue to talk about public vigilance and the need to build bridges to communities that we know and are trying to recruit within. This is a new phenomenon. So its really a mixed one. Were better at detecting the 9 11 attack, but its more challenging with this new environment that were in. I u noticed president obama has a new construct when describing how safe we are. It used to be that he would say were safer than six years ago, whatever. Now he says were safer than e we would be if we werent doing what were doing. Its almost an acknowledgment of the idea that buzz of this lone wolf threat we have no idea how safe we are. Since i have been in National Security beginning in 2009, we have made significant progress in degrading al qaedas ability to attack our o ohmland. Through our efforts of the Intelligence Community, but theres this new fe normal normal of the lone wolf attack. That presents challenge for the thing that keeps me up at night. It requires a whole government response. Secretary johnson, you were in new york city on 9 11. Tell us about that day for you. Well 9 11 happens to be my bth. 9 11 was my 4 had 4th bth. I had left the pentagon nine months before. I was general counsel in the clinton years. September 11th, 2001, i commuted in to manhattan to work. I was a lawyer in private practice. And from my office win don in midtown manhattan, i pretty much observed the whole thing. Like a lot of americans, i wanted to do something. And so i spent the last eight years now trying to do exactly that. When you say you saw it, what do you mean . Do you mean did you see people jumping from buildings . How vivid was it for you . I looked out my office win w window. First thing i saw was the smoke billowing out of the first tower against the backdrop of that beautiful blue sky. And then at some point, i looked up and saw the second plane hitting. I was going back and forth between watching it visually out the window and looking at it on tv. And then the thing ill never forget was watch that first tower collapse. The twin towers had become a permanent fixture on the land skap for 40 years then. To see the first tower collapse, it was almost a moment where my mind could not believe what my eyes were seeing. I kept wanting to see that tower e emerge from the smoke and the dust. That never happened. And its a memory frankly thats burned into my mind. Ill never forget it. Department of Homeland Security secretary jeh johnson, thank you so much. We appreciate it. Thanks for having me, jake. Stay with us as america looks back on 9 11. How many are remembering that fateful day. Urke at farmers, wn almost everything, so we know how to cover almost anything. As we reflect, we recall how the nation reacted after the devastation. Today were also thinking about how editorial cartoonists captured that pain, that confusion and that resilience. Thats the topic of this weeks state of the cartoonon. The nations political cartoonists dealt in different ways although all of them tried to rise to the the moment. From feeling the immediate pain to reflecting on the enormity of the tragedy to looking at loss more individually. The facial expression capturing what so many of us felt that day. Hurt and angry. Others felt fury and defiance. While still others wanted to remind us of what we stand for and what we shouldnt. But it was clearly a new day. No longer did we think oceans protected us. The threat was here. The heroes of the day inspired other cartoonists, the firemen in particular. The idea that these heroes were headed for heaven, an attempt at reassurance. At a time when many of us didnt have much reassurance to offer anyone, we couldnt even offer it to our children. And they couldnt offer it to us. A few days after the attack, cartoonists started to sharpen their pens and look at issues like intelligence failures. But before the cartoonists and the rest of us were able to get there, there was just the pain. Our thanks to those talented cartoonists.
