Standing with conservatives and why isnt it on display yet . With he want to welcome our viewers in the United States and around the world. Im wolf blitzer. Youre in the situation room. We continue with cnns live coverage of todays breaking news. The shocking death of an American Music legend. Prince. He was 57 years old. He had canceled several recent concerts due to illness. Investigators say he was found unresponsive today in an elevator at his mansion outside of minneapolis. Princes music topped the charts again and again for decades. Grammywinning albums like purple rain and number one songs like kiss and when doves cry. Tonight, princes fans are gathering outside of his home in minnesota and were getting new information from investigators. Our correspondents and guests and analysts will be joining me. Lets start with cnn respond Paul Vercammen who is joining me with details on the breaking news. What do we know . Reporter well, we now know, wolf, that the county examiner, the medical examiner in minnesota is going to perform an autopsy on princes body. Heres the timeline. It was today at about 9 43 that deputies responded to a 911 call that was at princes paisley studios in the minneapolis area. When they arrived there, they found an adult male unresponsive in an elevator. They then desperately tried cpr but all efforts to bring this person back to life failed. They identified him as prince Rogers Nelson. Of course, the grammywinning wellknown legendary iconic performer and singer. So what will be next here is for them to go ahead and perform that autopsy. This is in hollywood where they are playing for prince and so popular that we should note right now, the number one, two, three and four albums on itunes, all prince records and there has been a run on prince material here as many people here fondly remember him. Some of them openly crying. Back to you, wolf. Not surprising at all. Thanks so much, Paul Vercammen. Princes music spanned the era from mtv to itunes. Cnns tom foreman has more on princes remarkable career. He was performing as recently as last week but all of a sudden this happened. Yeah. It seems like he was always performing in some ways. He was incredibly familiar buoyant and private. He never showed up in the news like some celebrities do. His death is so shocking. Reporter prince was the perfect performer for his time, a blast of brilliance rising as just as mtv and the walkman were revolutionizing music. He had the sound and the look and a vision. I learned early on this is what i wanted to do. Little red corvette reporter for almost 40 years, he stayed in the vanguard of musical innovation. A fan said he captured his final performance in atlanta a week ago and posted it on twitter. Purple rain purple rain and this is how it all ended. Police and rescue workers at his studio in minneapolis. Prince had not been well. He had to cancel concerts and his plane had to land at one point for treatment. He spoke to fans about it a few days back. He talked about what happened and said hes okay and said dont waste your prayers on me right now and wait a few days. Prince in his first motion picture. Reporter like the character he played in his first movie purple rain, prince Rogers Nelson came from minneapolis, the son of a jazz pianist and a social worker. He remained tied to the city. Minneapolis gets it done, too . Minneapolis always gets it done. You dont have to go outside of that. Reporter but his influence was global. Prince produced more than a dozen topcharting songs, celebrity tributes are pouring in. Just justin timberlake, numb. Stunned. Whoopi goldberg, this is what it sounds like when doves cry. Prince contributed songs to endless other acts and was renowned as a musical perfectionist at most composing and performing. But he was also noted for his personal humanity, taking care of struggling friends and even contributing a song to baltimore during the devastating riots. It was a good day in baltimore prince was endlessly prolific. His memoir was supposed to come out next year. As it is, he is gone at 57. Some of his final words on stage, if i could, i would give you the world. He was, quite simply, a musical genius from the day he arrived. His performance in 2004 was absolutely jaw dropping. If he had just been a guitar player, a performer, a bass player, he might have been legendary but he did all of them and so many of these great accomplishments that had to be ahead of him are now lost. Wolf . Tom foreman, thank you very much. The white house has just released a statement on princes death on behalf of president obama and the first lady. Ill read it to you. Today the world lost a creative icon. Michelle and i join millions of fans from around the world in mourning the sudden death of prince. Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly or touched quite so many people with their talent. One of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time, prince did it all. Funk, r b, an electrifying performer, strong spirit that transcend rules. Prince once said, no one is more creative. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and band and all those who loved him. Joining us from los angeles, the former executive Vice President of princes company paisley park. Thank you for joining us. Our deepest condolences to you and the entire family. You had a longstanding relationship with prince that goes back many years, right . Yes, it certainly does. It goes all the way back to before the beginning of his career. What was it like to work with him . Well, it was amazing. You know, since i was running his company, he gave me full autonomy to do whatever he thought that i thought was the best. He was a real artist advocate and he was just so amazing when it came to making sure that the artists that he signed had everything that they could want. He didnt want to take he didnt want to take peoples publishing because he thought that, you know, an artist is an artist and someone else should not own your publishing. So had he a different view than other, lets call it Record Company owners had. He was interesting. As a businessman, it was really funny. My daughter juliette had a friend who was having a bar mitzvah and were very rich and said, kerry, well give you 10 million if prince will just play at our bar mitzvah. Im like, no problem. I called him and said, hey, man, i have 10 million for you if you just play at this bar mitzvah for 30 minutes. He said, no, no, i cant do that. I said, what do you mean you cant do that . Its 10 million. He said, yeah, but its not cool. So he didnt do things for money. He did things because they were right. They felt right in his spirit. He felt cool about it and everything he did had to be cool. It was really a unique experience you had. I want to get into that a little bit more. Do you know the circumstances surrounding his sudden death, only 57 years old . We only know what police said. He was found unresponsive in an elevator in his home there. Do you have any information there . I dont. As soon as it happened, i started getting this influx of calls, a plethora of calls that started coming to me. The thing that i thought was, you know, being that i worked with him so long, he was always so into health. He was a vegan. He didnt do drugs. He was just he was very he was very cognizant of the things that he put into his body. So i and we used to play basketball. He was an athlete. And he was a good athlete. He was shockingly good for how small he was because he was a really tiny guy. But he was he was very into health. So im im shocked. I dont know what it could be and im waiting to find out just like everyone else. Yeah. Were showing you live pictures, by the way, kerry, of paisley park where obviously thats his studio, his company over there. People are beginning to gather over there. Talk a little bit about the impact he had from your perspective as someone who worked with him for so many years, the impact that he had on music. Well, he had an incredible impact. R b artists did not own their publishing or their masters. It was a very interesting scenario. During his time when he said, no, im going to own my songs, i want to own my masters and all of this kind of stuff he changed the pair dime and thought process for all of those that came after him. I thought that he had a great effect as far as thats concerned. What was the other part of the question you asked . The impact that he had on music. Youre giving us a good impact, that he had an enormous impact and set the scene for so many other artists that were just recording music. They were actually the producers and Business Leaders of all of that and they werent just working for someone else, right . Right. And another thing is, you know, the sound that he came up with. Just like this song marine 50 has out, sugar, i think it is. To me, thats a prince record. That sounds exactly like a prince record. And im sure that they got their inspiration from prince as did a plethora of other artists. He was so incredibly prolific. I had a chance to work with him in the studio and played with him on stage. I mean, he loved music. He really loved music. So he would come to a little funky audience and get up and play. And it was always shocking. He loved to play. You know what i want to do, kerry, stay with us, i want to play a little bit of when doves cry, the 1984 hit as we go to break. Well resume our coverage right after this. Maybe youre just like my mother hey pal . You ready . Can you pick me up at 6 30 . Ah. boy im here im here cop too late. I was gone for five minutes ugh move it. Youre killing me. You know what, dad . Im good. dad it may be quite a while before hes ready, but our Subaru Legacy will be waiting for him. vo the longestlasting midsize sedan in its class. Thats the home, the studio there of prince outside of minneapolis right now. Were covering the breaking news. The death of the music legend. He was only 57 years old. The Sheriffs Department statement says he was unresponsive when discovered in an elevator at his studio there in his estate in minnesota. First responders were called and attempted cpr but could not revive him. Were back with kerry gordy, the former Vice President of paisley park. Talk about the man who you knew and appreciated so much, kerry. Well, there were two different people there. The first person was the person that everybody knows, the guy who was eccentric, the guy who was prince, the guy who is known formally known as prince. He was the eccentric superstar that had an incredible amount of artist integrity. He was a boss that knew exactly what he wanted and he was that perfectionist that went after everything that he wanted. He was kind of insatiable as it related to, i know, playing his music. He had to play. He was that guy. He was a guy that loved to be in front of 20,000 people performing but also the guy that loved to be in front of three people performing because he didnt care. He just loved to perform. Thats the prince that the world knows. The prince that i knew was a little bit different. People thought that he was a reclusive and as much as when he was in a big crowd of people and wasnt performing, he would be reclusive. But he was when we were alone, he became this fun guy that liked to play games and liked to run around and liked to and he was this encyclopedia of musical knowledge and he wld like to play these games. He made sure that im digressing a bit but he made sure that all of his executives that worked for him, all of us, we had to be decked out in, you know, major suits and we had to always look very professional. That was one of his. He wanted to make sure that wherever he went, he looked he was represented correctly and he looked cool. Yeah. He always did. No doubt about that. Kerry, i want you to stay with us because on the phone is lowell picket, one of the owners of the dakota jazz clubs, a venue that prince frequently attended and hes involved with the Musical Instrument in phoenix. When was the last time you saw prince . Tuesday night. This past tuesday night . Yeah. The night before last. He was he came to the dakota for a show on tuesday night. Lynn write was performing, an incredible singer. And he came he would come out once every four to six weeks for shows here just to enjoy them. Just to come in and watch and listen . And as you say, enjoy did he seem okay . Because apparently he was suffering from some flu earlier in the week and thats what they were telling us. They said he was okay. What did he seem like on tuesday when you saw him . Oh, he seemed fine. He seemed like prince. You know, we never and to be honest with you, thats not something that we would have really focused on orooked at or paid attention to. We always tried to make sure that he wasnt bothered by the people when he came. We had a special place where he came inside and just ushered him up to his table and let him enjoy the show. We loved the idea that he loved enjoying the show and loved coming here. So we didnt want to bother him. I had heard that he had been ill earlier but everyone gets ill and that kind of comes and goes. I didnt notice anything on tuesday night. Did he ever perform at your club . He performed here a couple of years ago. He actually initiated it. Kerry, you might remember julia when she worked for him. Was managing him. They approached us and he wanted to do some shows in a small room and we talked about it for about a month, five weeks and set it up and he played three nights. He had a different band every night. First night was and two show as night. First night was all instrumental with a sixpiece horn section and the second night he sang with three backup singers and the horn section and then at midnight on the third nighte said, why dont you all come back . We will play a little music on the stage and have some fun and charge a little bit of money at the door. He cohosted a deejay night on the fourth night. We took all of our furniture out. Pretty amazing. Stand by. Lowell picket from the jazz club. Kerry gordy is still joining us as well. Lets take a quick break and well be right back. Were covering todays breaking news, the legendary princes death. The Sheriffs Department statement says he was unresponsive when discovered in an elevator at that studio in minnesota. First responders were called and they attempted cpr and they could not revive him. There will be an autopsy. Were back with kerry gordy, former Vice President of paisley park. Youve got a lot of business. Your father, barry gordy, its fair to say he founded motown and all of us have enjoyed that music over these many, many decades. Thank you. Talk a little bit about how he emerged from motown as a new generation, a new generation r b star. Well, prince wasnt with motown. Prince was with Warner Brothers. I know. But he was influenced by that music. Oh. Theres no question about it. It was really funny because when i met prince and i was going to become the person that was running his Company Along with john dekakis, he looked up to me because i was the son of his idol. Right. So it was a really interesting pair dime because everyone else who worked for him, he had this thing of where he would look at them like, okay, you work for me. But in my case, he was like, oh, my gosh, youre the son of the man who ive looked up to for my whole life. Right . So, yeah, he definitely looked up to everybody. I had a chance to i was really good friends with Stevie Wonder and i still am and stevie was the one person that prince would say, you know what, that guy im not im talented but im not as talented as that guy, right . I mean, he looked up to stevie. He looked up to smoky robinson for his songwriting ability. So he really looked up to those motown artists and, of course, Michael Jackson was one of his idols as well as his major competition. And at one time, i managed rick james and prince opened for rick james and prince actually started doing some of rick james show where he would go, ooh, ooh. And rick got so mad. Hes like, that guys stealing my show. Prince is like, hey, listen, you cant copyright ooh, ohh. Yes, motown had an influence of prince. Kerry, can you stick around or do you have to run . I have some guests that may want to ask you a question or two. Can you stick around . Sure. Sure. I can stick around. I want to get more now on the life and career of prince. Joining us, brian monroe. Brian monroe is a former cnn. Com specialist and is now a professor at Temple University in philadelphia. Also, hes the former Vice President of ebony and jet magazines. Also, don lemon, our anchor. When was the last time, brian, you had a chance to speak with prince . Well, we were very fortunate. Almost eight, nine months ago, in august 2015, i was in minneapolis along with the National Association of black journalists and the convention was there. The last night of the convention, we got a surprise call paisley park. Prince wants us to come on out. We loaded up the buses, brought 1200 people to a private event at paisley park, big sound stage as well as a studio and part residence. And then got a tap on the shoulder and said, prince wants to sit down with handle of eight or ten of you. We went up to his studio, handson working studio. We all crammed into the studio room. He said, no, its too tight in here. He led us out past all of his golden and platinum rooms and up the stairs to his conference room. Had he two gorgeous assist saan. We had a oneonone conversation with prince, an interview where he was talking about the Music Industry. We talked about how important the industry was to him and how much he fought against a lot of the royalties and how the business was structured. He was off Warner Brothers 18 years before he finally got his catalog back. He looked great, energetic, the nice hair and was thin and was eager and excited to talk to us. Steven thompson, youve studied prince, enjoyed him, the last concert in atlanta just last week, the president of the theater said this and ill put it up on the screen prince was a music pioneer and his music inspired many including the fans that were able to join him as he took the stage for his final performances last week at atlantas fox theater. We along with the world mourn the loss of a music legend. What did prince mean to the pop culture . First of all, you look at this absolutely towering collection of music and well spend the next weeks and months and years picking it apart and celebrating it but i think there are other sides to his legacy that we should also be looking at. I think he didnt get enough credit for being an incredible collaborator and supporter of other musicians. I found myself from when i first discovered him as a kid in the 80s, i was always fascinated by how he would bring other musicians up with him up as much as possible, particularly women. He was an incredible and prolific songwriter and wrote signature songs for a lot of other artists. You think about i feel for you and prince wrote that. Think about manic monday by the bangels and he also was always bringing up musicians, particularly women, wendy and lisa who performed in his band, performers like vanity. He was always nurturing other talent and seemed to be celebrating that as working as his own towering artist. Excellent points. Don, i know he had a huge impact on you. What set him apart, from your perspective, from other artists . Well, to be honest, as ive been saying, his individuality but there are lots of things. Lets break this down. You have lots of entertainers who are great, lots of artists who are great entertainers. You will say this person is a great dancer. This person is a great singer. This person is a great musician. Guess what, prince was all of those. He was a great writer. He was prolific. He was a great singer he had a voice. At 57 years old, hes hitting every note as if hes 19 when he started back in the 70s. He could dance, he could play the hell out of a guitar. He knew music. But here is the most interesting thing, he was also a great businessman. So he was the threat across the board. I cant even say for how many numbers, across the board. Because as your previous guest was saying, he really sort of upset the Music Industry because he wanted to own his own stuff, his own music. And, you know, Record Companies dont like that. They want to own it because thats where the money is. So if you own your own catalog, you make money. Lots of entertainers go to their grave broke because they sing, perform, do concerts, make the money and then when thats done, it all dries up. And so where you have Whitney Houston who made a lot of money in her time but lost a lot of it. Dolly parton made a lot of money for i will always love you because she wrote it. Prince wanted to own his own catalog and then just bought his own catalog and owned it. Now the prince estate, billions of dollars. So he was the overall artist and business person and the kind of person that most people in the Music Industry aspired to be. Do you mind if i ask a question to kerry . Ask kerry a question. Heres what i want to know. Everyone is asking me on social media, we keep talking about paisley park and that compound. What is inside of that compound . Bryan or kerry, whats in that compound . Oh, my gosh, its the most amazing compound and there is an actual stage that is a stage that he can actually perform his show, you know, get his shows together on. Its a real stage with real lighting and its amazing. He doesnt have to go outside to do that. And hes got a little apartment up there, which is amazing, and so its an allinclusive facility that has everything that one could need to do everything that you would do in the entertainment business. Everybody, stand by for a moment. We have a lot more coming up. A special note, an important one, don lemon will host another edition, 10 00 p. M. Eastern right here on cnn. Youre going to want to see that as well. Lets take a break. In the meantime, lets listen a little bit to purple rain. Were back covering the death of prince. Kerry gordy, you knew him very well. Ill ask you a tough question, wa w what was your favorite prince song . Oh, my gosh. You guys arent going to like this but my favorite prince song was erotic city. I liked dancing with girls and singing those lyrics while i was singing. But i loved it. I also like controversy. I love it. But the first time i heard controversy i thought he was saying count your blessings and i didnt realize it was controversy. I thought it was count your blessings. Whats your favorite one . Mine is mine is head and well go on. That was one of his first songs and you dont hear it a lot. Controversy is also one of my favorite songs because it sounds so different. When doves cry came out, i used to play that song over and over and over again because i had never heard anything like it musically. And we were on with you earlier, wolf, and i think i like that and soft and wet as well. Your love is soft i played that over and over again. And kiss. I just want your extra time and kiss listen to this song. Theres nothing like this song. Stephen, what about you . I think for me, i was 11 or 12 when purple rain came out. And then being 13, 14 when kiss came out, it felt likes this 180degree turn and it was one of the first times that one of my favorite artists, i was a budding little pop nerd, you know, scribbling down the top 40s as it was announced and this is one of the first times that an artist i loved completely surprised me. And when i look at princes career, he was constantly flipping and turning and surprising you and trying things that you wouldnt have expected from him. And so being a kid and seeing somebody who was incredibly famous and incredibly popular but still willing to take risks and still willing to be surprising or weird or whatever kids said at the time, that was so important to me. Bryan . You mention controversy but mine is one that has a lot of club play. You throw on 1999 at any club and folks are going to fill the floor in a heartbeat. You know what im going to do right now . Lets go out to this commercial break with 1999. Listen to this. I never meant to cause you any trouble so tonight im going to party like its 1999 these are live pictures coming in from paisley park outside minneapolis, this is the home of prince. Hooks like a memorial is already being developed. People are dropping off things. Joining us a friend of prince. Deepest condolences to you. How long of a relationship did you have with prince, what was he like . About ten years. I think first of all, theres a lot of talk about him as musician, thats very, very important. But i also that was just a part of him. He was a genius across the board. He was somebody who really cared about people, about humanity. There are people that got solar panels on their roof in oakland, california. They dont know that prince paid for them. There are people, Charities Across the world with money that theyre spending, helping people. They dont know it came from prince because he is a jehovahs witness, he is not allowed to reveal or brag on his good works. So everything he did he did through me and three other people. This is a guy, the genius of him, the music was just one way to express it. I talked to prince so much. He really talked about music. He would talk about ancient egypt. There was a city, ancient egyptian city that disappeared, would talk about what might have he could paint a picture of ancient egypt that would blow your mind. He could have been a philosopher. Could have been a standup comedian. He was one of the funniest people. He would have you about to pee on yourself and show you no mercy. He was a table tennis player. He could kill you in ping pong and talk trash the whole time. I mean, theres just something, i hate to because nobody could know his charitable side, you see him as a musician. But we went to chicago to try to stop killings. He did three big shows in chicago. We went to baltimore. The manager at the end of his career was a genius, got him his catalog back. A young legal woman with no Legal Training that went to war, got him his catalog back. Happiest ive seen him when he got the catalog back. Youre a lawyer, youre an attorney. You helped in that case as well, right . Absolutely. I was there in the room when the deal got done. I was there when he finally i cannot tell you how angry he was being a 17yearold kid, 19yearold kid signing contracts, he didnt know what he was signing. It turned out he could not only not have his music, he cant even use his own name. Lets not forget his mother named him prince Rogers Nelson, then the Music Industry says you cant use your name because we are in court. Thats where the artist formerly known as came from. Talking about someone that fought the industry and changed it, somebody that has given so much to so many. Prince never called you on a good day. You got an award, he wasnt calling you, book was a best seller, he wasnt going to call you. If you had a bad day, thats when he would call you. If something was wrong, when things were down, thats when your phone is going to ring. Thats when prince is going to reach out to you and figure out how he can help you when youre down, and not just me. Celebrities and other people and Little People around the world. My plane landed one time, on a plane landed, phone rings. Something happened in some city someplace he thought was terrible. He thought i could teleport places, whats going on, how could we help. When people were hurting, he was just i cant explain the compassion he would have. He would push us, push us, go there, help those people, call them, find out whats going on. When black lives matter came out, he understood those kids. When he was a kid he was a rebel as a musician. His big prayer was i hope those kids can become an economic force, let them take that creativity, create jobs, create businesses, create apps, create, use that energy for creativity. He loved alicia garza from black lives matter. I dont mean to filibuster, but i want you to know he is not just a musician. There was a genius there that had to be expressed through music, but it was expressed so many different ways. This is a very he was so on. He watched cnn. I would be afraid to come on sometimes, he would give me notes and criticisms and it would be brutal, but he would be right. This is a man knew what was going on in the world, influential musician, but was also a humanitarian as well. Beautiful words, we really appreciate your thoughts. Our deepest, deepest condolen s condolences. Stay with us. We will take another commercial break. Lets listen to when doves cry. There it is. This is where i met your grandpa. Right under this tree. man some things are Worth Holding onto. Theyre hugging the tree. man thats why we got a subaru. Or was it that tree . man the twentysixteen subaru outback. Love. Its what makes a subaru, a subaru. Im a Customer Relationship im roy gmanager. Ith pg e. Anderson Valley Brewing company is definitely a leader in the adoption of energy efficiency. Tom foreman reporting for us. Lets get more on the breaking news. Joining us cnn don lemon, and also joining us, former Vice President and editorial director of ebony and jet magazines, ryan monroe, former editor of cnnpolitics. Com. Teaches at Temple University in philadelphia. And writer and editor, steven thompson. Thanks for joining us. Let me get back to you. Not long ago you went to paisley park, sat down with a small group, had a chance to listen to him for at least an hour, go through thoughts. Give us a thought he shared with you that still resonates. Was he wihe was talking abou Music Industry, how he got his catalog back, worth millions and millions of dollars. That was after an 18 year struggle with the label. Now he talked about music streaming, spotify, pandora, apple music, his current album was going to be released on jayzs title, his streaming service. How they worked that deal. He wanted to send a message to Young Artists that he called the Music Industry a slave trade, was very heated about how much they would take from the artist without giving much back and felt strongly about it, very passionate. Did he seem healthy . He looked great, you see the smile on his face, it is contagious. You talk about he has a quirky side but he was knowledgeable, knew the business and music. Talked earlier how talented he was as a musician. He could play guitar shall played drums, played piano arranged pretty much all the songs we heard, and he worked with jimmy jam, perry lewis before they had a rough spot, but he knew music so well and knew the business. He knew music well, performed, wrote music, performed. Carrie, you knew him as a boss. What was he like as a businessman . It is really funny, as a businessman like i said, he didnt do things for money. He did things because he felt them in his soul. Like when he was going today the bot mitzvah, he didnt want to do it for 10 million because it wasnt cool. So as a businessman, he would come up with all these ideas. Each idea he came up with was interesting. Some were incredible, some were horrible. The fact of the matter is, the ones that were incredible paid for the ones that were horrible. You couldnt stop him from doing the horrible ones, you never knew if that horrible thing would be incredible, he was that much of a genius. We heard van jones say he was religious, a jehovahs witness. Talk about that a little bit. Okay. This is funny. After i finished working with him, one day i get a knock on the door. I open the door, and it is prince in front of my door with highheeled shoes on, one red, one purple, one purple leg, one high heel, i mean one pink leg. And looks at me and goes what are you doing there. I said i live here. He said oh, my gosh. I was walking the neighborhood and i just wanted to talk to you about becoming a jehovahs witness. I said oh, my god. So yes. He was very religious in kind of a period, quirky way. Because i thought he was religious in one sense but in the other sense had all these girlfriends. So i didnt know. Interesting story. Don lemon, you were young when you first became influenced by his music and it stayed with you a long time, didnt it . It certainly did. It was something that you felt like you shouldnt be listening to, that you were disobeying your parents. This was 1978. I remember listening to him in my room. My parents was come in and say what are you listening to. My sister introduced me to him. I would say he was the first artist i knew that was completely emancipated, he was free, he was free as cary and van jones said, he was free to do what he wanted. He wasnt about the machine but was about the business and the artistry. You could see that in his work, the way he handled himself. And also he didnt care if the song was bad or didnt sell. He just did his art. Whatever sold commercially, that was great. Whatever people artistically liked, that was great. If they didnt, he sort of brushed it off, kept moving as an artist. That stayed with me from the early days of 1978, first album for you, up until the end. We have to take a break, but quickly. His contribution to american culture. What stands out in your mind . One of the things that stands out is what don said, he was willing to try just about anything, willing to fail. Willing to put out weird sounding records. I would get this ep called the scandalous sex suite. He would put it on. I loved that constant element of surprise, the way he was artistically and creatively unbound. Everyone stand by. We will continue breaking News Coverage. The sad news that prince died at the age of 57. Lets listen to prince. Dear beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life. burke smash and grub. Seen it. Covered it. We know a thing or two because weve seen a thing or two. We are farmers. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum safety doesnt come in a box. Its not a banner that goes on a wall. Its not something you do now and then. Or when its convenient. The death of musical artist prince, he was found unresponsive, in his Recording Studio in minneapolis. Cause of death is unknown. Officials say there will be autopsy performed. Thanks very much for joining us. Give us your reaion to princes death. It is a huge loss to you, to millions of people around the world. Needless to say, when i heard about it, i was in shock, like im sure everybody was. The man was a genius. He was one of a kind. None of us expected that. I was talking about prince with my good friend, talked about him last week and his influence on music. He will be greatly missed and just did so many great things musically, the artist that he discovered and music on the scene. From day one. Your good friend paxton baker is with us in studio. He is former president of bet productions, Music Industry producer. Paxton, when you heard about this like all of us, you must have been stunned. Stunned, and he was such a helpful person, health was in credible to him. Big part of who he was. To hear it happen so young, 57 seems young, was even more shocking. Yeah, very much. You saw him not that long ago with doug e. Fresh. Yeah. Talked about five hours with him into the morning. Bet honors . Bet awards two years ago. What was it like. Mysterious. Very, very thoughtful, very, very shy. Speaking like a quiet tone, had to reach over him to talk. As far as him being jehovahs witness, deeply rooted in the bible. Can quote scriptures off the top of his head, knew the bible incredibly well. Helpful, didnt curse. Something very meaningful about him. Just thoughtful. That side of him, that religious side, vegetarian, knew the bible, that didnt always come across when he was performing. No, thats for sure. It was kind of a whole circle for him. Different points he kind of fade off the music scene, not perform. Then appear on the other side, tour for a good stretch of time. Dougie opened for him many occasions, was the one that kind of put us together. In talking with him, spent time with him one on one, very spiritual. Told me he pretty much talked to larry graham on the phone for an hour, talking scriptures. Really . Wow. So very much along those lines. Different personalities, all the same person. Verdean, prince, often said earth, wind and fire was his influence. What does that mean to you that he would refer to earth, wind and fire so often as a great influence on his music . You know, what a lot of people dont know, we shared the same management back in the day, with his manager and our manager. Paisley park, he had the prototype from my late brother maurices studio, the complex, in los angeles, which was similar to paisley park. The influence was there, and it was a great honor that prince would still mention us and what not. He ran into Philip Bailey few years ago, wonderful talk. So you know, it was we all knew each other well. Cary gordy, worked for him, knew him well, part of the team that was so influential, give a sense of the impact on american culture, on music around the world. First of all, before i speak to that i want to say that verdean, prince was in awe of your bass playing. He thought you were truly amazing, and of course i do, too. I just wanted to say that. With regard to his influence, i think it is massive. You cant even say what it is. All you can think about is what would the world be like if there was never a prince. Music would be different. People would not have the same, the songs would not be the same. His influence transcends everything. It goes all across the world. I cant really say what it is, but i just know the world would be a different place had not prince existed. Good point. Don lemon, i want to show viewers the cover of next weeks issue of new yorker magazine. Talk about the legacy from your perspective, how he influenced the music world. Wow, look at that cover. I have to say everything he said. What cary said. He impacted in so many ways. I think it is yet to be determined. We have so many artists that looked to him as a role model, and as previous guests pointed out, how he influenced Women Artists, how he took Women Artists under his wing. And i dont mean in a way strictly platonic way that he cared about the art, cared about the female point of view. And female role in society, how that needed to be expanded, that they needed roles in the Music Industry. Needed a platform just as big as many, if not more so. He loved women as you could see that. Prince never left home without a beautiful woman. I respect him for that. I love him for that. I want to say, wolf, as i am saddened to be here, im also honored to be sharing this platform with the caliber of people who are here who knew prince, especially another musical genius like ver dean. It is an honor. We are thrilled that he is with us as well. Brian, talk about the impact that he had not just on music but on politics. He got involved on various issues over the years. And it was significant. Because he was jehovahs witness, there was a balance between political activity and standing back on the sidelines, but he was very much engaged in politics and president ial races. He watched cnn, he knew what was going on, was not detached from the process. Wolf, can i jump in and Say Something . He was an example when i talk about being emancipated, being free. So as an artist, you may do certain things you dont necessarily do in your personal life, or people this is an artist, that was his business. That didnt mean that was the man that he was. He didnt wear his religion on his sleeve. This is me as an artist, this is what i do in artistry, and this is who i am as a person. Prince was, and i didnt know him personally, from all accounts i heard of prince, he was a true gentleman. When someone says youre thoughtful, not many are thoughtful these days, not many people open doors, say thank you or are gracious. And that is an old school trait. Thats why i love prince. You could hear it in his music, you saw that in his respect for people and especially women. You studied his music, youre an expert on music, produced the soul train awards all those years, paxton. Did you see the music evolve . To come back to a point made earlier, remember at one point he became a symbol and moved off the thing about rights and being thoughtful, many times light years ahead, even as far as intellectual property, music rights, fighting for artists. He did that on multiple occasions along the way. His music evolved as far as lyrics, thoughtfulness, what you hear from him. Earlier on it was racy, sexy, as it grew, became more political and evocative on a different variety of subjects, way beyond music or sexuality for sure. Hold on a moment. I want to take a quick break. Were going to have much more on the sad news. Prince unfortunately has passed away at the age of 57. Lets go to break with this prince great song, you got the look. We are following the passing of music legend prince, wuchb the most influential artists, found dead at 57 in his Recording Studio near minneapolis. His death days after his plane reportedly made an Emergency Landings in illinois so he could be rushed to a hospital. He was released after several hours. Earlier this month, representative said prince had been sick with the flu. Tonight Officials Say an autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death. Lets get more with someone who knew prince personally very close to prince. Cnn political commentator van jones. I know this is a sad day for you, especially you were very close with him, just there at paisley park, his studio, outside minneapolis. Is that where prince spent most of his time. I am in l. A. Now, he used to be here as well. The thing about paisley park, you go down that hallway. Love prince, he doesnt have a small ego. You walk down a corridor with every award, grammys, mtv stuff. Thats your interest in the building. This is the house of prince. Then you get to the end and theres the motorcycle from purple rain. Dont touch it. Dont look at it too long, keep walking. Just in case you missed it, there is the motorcycle. Okay . So even the house, by the way, it was designed by him, he designed everything inside there. You would open each door. In each door there was a theme of different parts of his life. One door you opened up, it goes in partially, then you step up. I said what is this room about . He said this is when i finally was able to get free from the Music Industry and be my own kind of artist. He was always fighting for the right and freedom of artists. Not to make anybody mad at me, but he was mad at the Technology Companies for, quote, unquote, stealing his music. I love steve jobs. Why did steve jobs get the money. I dont understand. Itunes and that stuff. He also when jayz began to create title. Prince wanted to help people. If he thought an artist was good, not great, he wanted that artist to become great. He was there, he had so much creativity, he could share it and have enough left for him. Van, he wrote a protest song in honor of freddie gray that died a week after suffering a severe spinal cord injury in police custody. You played a visit to baltimore. Talk about that. Prince was very socially aware. I think people kind of see him as a musician or artist. He watched the news like a fanatic. He knew everything that was going on, not just the United States, around the world. You could talk to prince for hours about world affairs. Those lyrics are on top of a dense amount of he could have been a theologian as much as a musician. People dont know that. Things that happened like baltimore, he wanted to go. His manager in late years comes out of the labor movement, africanamerican woman, incredible leader. She was able to help him go places like baltimore. His last words on the stage in baltimore, he said i want to come back to baltimore, talking to young people in baltimore, and i want to come back to restaurants that you own, that you have built. I want to stay in a hotel you built. He went to chicago to try to bring peace there. He insisted the Major Community organizations be invited, we have the entire ua center, not with beer and nonsense, Community Based organizations because he wanted those organizations to get the benefit of people coming in, they could sign up, help the groups. Also when it came to technology, he wanted young africanamericans and latinos, native americans, wanted left out kids to not just download apps, he wanted them to make their own apps, upload them. Created yes, we code together. And theyre now working with twitter and pinterest. He never talked about it publicly. He would make a little bit of a concert here, concert there, nobody had any idea from yes we code, going to baltimore, imagine the creativity that goes in that music that never cuts off. Thinking about politics, theology, religion, children, the poor, that same level of creativity and passion is flowing through everything. And he is the funniest guy alive. You obviously loved him, a lot of people did and we will miss him. Lets take another quick commercial break. Play a little of little red corvette. Steven, as prolific as he was, we understand there was a lot of music that still is hidden, if you will, that hasnt been released. When i became a prince fan in the 1980s, one of the myths surrounding him is that he had a gigantic vault of music referred to, had 400, 500 songs, they were all amazing. As a fan, you just dreamed of this almost infinite bounty of prince music. Once he was liberated from his label deal, even as he was liberated from that label deal, some of that was trickled out, he put out albums from the vault, Something Like that. I remember one of his first, if not the First Release he put out once he was an independent artist was a set called crystal ball that had Something Like 64 songs on it, four cds. I remember getting this mammoth collection of music, like somebody had opened a fire hydrant of prince music. I would imagine there would be this pipeline of prince music long after he is gone. Produced the soul train awards for years, how valuable is whats in the vault . Amazingly so, literally, youll get a flow of music for a long time to come. He had such enormous impact on so many great artists. For sure. Please dont forget the fashion impact. Talk a bit. You have a nice fashion yourself. Prince, Michael Jackson, theyre like giants of fashion. He influenced fashion in a wide array of ways from pants, jackets, clothing, glasses. Like the part thats blind in the mind that needs to open up and see, incredible icon. Influenced a wide array of styles for sure. You can testify, youve known him a long time. Spoke with him a year ago. In august we were able to talk with him. Its interesting he had this interesting relationship with technology, he didnt like a lot of it. He thought they were stealing his music. When we were there at paisley park, strict rule, no cell phone. You wont see a selfie, a picture out of that. Even when we sat down, did the interview. You had to leave the cell phone outside . Either at the bus or hotel, he was that serious. Even the band in baltimore, ben and i were there, ben went back stage. The bouncers in baltimore had strict rules. They saw you pull out a cell phone to take a picture or video, not only would they confiscate the phone, they would throw you out. They would throw people out for having cell phones. Who owns the music. Prince and his estate. I am sure he set up an estate plan, probably has a will. We will find out in days and weeks to come. Theres going to be an enormous amount of music, enormous amount of soul. He was working on a memoir. Supposed to come out in a year. You heard about it . I believe it is coming out next year. He was about a month into it. We have been talking about princes legacy as a man, as a performer. I also just feel like i was a kid when i got into prince. I was 11, 12, 13. I grew up in a small town in the middle of wisconsin. The models that you had of rebellion in music, for me at least in a small town, it was very like rock and roll. It was a very specific and i think narrow thing, and one of the things prince brought out for me was just a different face of rebellion, and playful kind of it just wasnt typical. It didnt feel like anything i had seen or heard before. The sound he had. His guitar sound. You heard the key board sound, his percussion. Those are so unique and such a signature sound that nobody ever, ever can top that. And is it hasnt aged a day. Not a day. Thats what blows me away. You agree, paxton. I agree. You mentioned earth, wind and fire. One of his other influences was miles davis. For sure. It was a generations of music that influenced him but he took it to a different level. Absolutely. Unique. It was his twist on it. And man, was he funky. Yeah. I agree. Stand by, guys. Were going to continue to take a look back at this amazing, amazing legend. Lets listen to 1999. The music legend prince is dead at the age of 257. The cause still a mystery. Tonight his body was found in an elevator in a studio. There will be an autopsy. Were back with our panel. You know, i want to play a statement that prince made, brian, last year at the grammys. As you know, he won, what, seven grammys, nominated multiple times. But listen to what he said last year at the grammys. Albums still matter. Like books and black lives, albums still matter. You remember that when he made that statement. Black lives matter. He was so important about the music and the albums and the structure. The narrative an album has. With streaming, with artists getting 1 10 of one penny for as long as being played. That bothered him a lot on a creative level. He won an Academy Award too, paxton. Im just looking, 1985, best original song score, won the Academy Award for purple rain. Arguably, what, his most famous song . Arguably his most famous song but one of the greatest movies and not just africanamerican genre, but from a cult classic perspective. Writer, arranger, producer. And then, of course, batman on the other side, as well. He had an enormous amount of influence. Historians they have already written about him, but theyre now going to write even more. Theyre going to dig through the incredible catalog and i hope the one thing none of us lose sight of is the sense of playfulness and fun. When i go home tonight and really dig into princes music, one of the first things im going to watch is the 2007 super bowl halftime show. Where it just had this sense of bigness and playfulness and a little bit of dirtiness. And it was silly and it was fun. So, like he had this incredible musical ability, but he channeled it the service of joy. You know, the words today seemed pretty mild. But remember at the time, tipper gore, she started a whole organization to sort of parental guidance for these you remember that. Yeah, the pmrc. And he was parents music resource center. Exactly. And, you know, his language and his videos remember the one video, he had the exposed butt cheek. And but he was playful. He liked to play on the edges, too. And some of his stuff may have crossed over a little bit. But thats okay. Thats what youve got to do. You remember those days. I were those days. But the other part is the musicians who knew him, everybody who knew him loved him. And the musician and friends, dougie french, phillip bailey, so many people who knew him loved him. He always made time is that unusual in the music business . Because you worked with all of these artists, producing all of those soul train award specials. For sure. A lost lot of great relationships, but he was at the top. He knew everything. Every note. Talk music. And the studio, he had a stage where oh, yeah, a big sound stage. I was there. Tell us about it. You. You come in, go to the left. Probably holds 1,000 people easil easily. He brought his guitar out, rehearsals. And you go to the left and there is a reception area where youre almost in a mini club that had these giant sound stage doors that opened up to main stage. And then you go around another small door and that takes you down van talked about that hallway of awards and plaques and gold records and platinum records. And then you come up the stairs to another part. And it just keeps unveiling itself. We were showing pictures live pictures of paisley park, his studio, estate. Whats going to happen to it now, without prince . I mean, i would imagine its at least a possibility i dont have any inside information, but i would imagine the possibility of turning it into a museum. Making it something that people can visit in order to celebrate his life and celebrate his music. I hope that i would imagine it will be. But i hope it will be preserved and appropriately treasured. I assume it will be. Dont you think, paxton . I would think so. But he would want people to use his gear. Yeah, that was they shot commercials on that set and everything. His legacy. Whats going to be the major point of his legacy . His music, his heart, his playfulness. And that there will be no other prince. Thats right. He was a one in a million. Well said. Guys, thanks very, very much. Once again, our deepest, deepest condolences to his family, to all of his friends. A huge, huge loss. The music legend, prince, dead at 57.
