To ever receive this particular combination of medicine. Announcer this is new day with Alisyn Camerota and john berman. Welcome to our viewers in the United States and all around the world. This is new day. And this morning, we would like to be able to give you a reliable update on the president s condition, but we cant. Because his doctor has admitted lying to the American People and the white house is withholding key information. So we just cant be sure about anything. But what we do know is that seven months into the pandemic and 209,725 deaths later, the president now, all of a sudden, says hes learned a lot about the coronavirus. But not so much that it prevented him from getting in a sealed suv with secret Service Agents for this photo op outside walter reed hospital. One veteran secret Service Agent calls that stunt reckless and irresponsible and unbelievable. The Washington Post reports this morning that the president is pushing for a return to the white house today, but there is some fear the post says, among his advisers, that it is a political decision and that he could relapse and have to return to walter reed. At least ten people in the president s circle are now infected, including the first lady, three senators, and governor chris christie. We believe he is still in the hospital this morning, but we have no word on his condition. At least three journalists assigned to cover the white house have also tested positive. And we will speak to one of them in a moment. The pandemic itself is surging again. 22 states report rising case numbers. Cases are dropping in only five states this morning. So joining us now is michael scherer, cnn political analyst and New York Times white house correspondent. He is one of the white house journalists who tested positive for coronavirus. We also have jonathan waker, former secret Service Agent for president barack obama. Before we get to everything the president is doing, michael, how are you doing this morning . Im feeling okay. This is definitely an uncomfortable thing to have. I wouldnt recommend it to folks. It feels like you have the flu, you know, the aches and pains and chills and i still have a lowgrade fever that ive had for several days. Its definitely not comfortable. But its also not, you know im here. Its, you know, you sort of get through it. And im not in the hospital. And i certainly feel lucky when compared to all the people who have had this far worse than i have. And you are doing your reporting, you are doing your work, because the story itself right now is so important and youre able to do it, which is great. Jonathan, to you. You have served in president ial protective detail. So i want to know what you were thinking when you saw those pictures last night of the president in the enclosed suv with those secret Service Agents, driving by walter reed, for really nothing more than a photo op. Now, i knew i know that agents theyll do their job. You know, their job is to just barrel ford, protect tward, prot the best they can, and thats what theyre focused on, but i have to believe there are other feelings going on as well. I was shocked when i saw the images of the president in the suv, just going around the block, essentially for the optic. What this speaks to, it literally is the proverbial exclamation point on the complete disregard for basic Health Security measures. And you know, we have to look back seven months ago, when the rise of this pandemic was entering into our country, basic Health Security protocols from the white house, white house military office, specifically the medical unit, and the secret service needed to be implemented and followed so we didnt have this situation. We are in a 100 avoidable situation. The president should not be in the hospital. We should not have political leaders who are you know, who have contracted this virus. We should not have been here. And broadly, we shouldnt have had so Many Americans get the disease and unfortunately die from the disease. We have disregarded the basic Health Security elements from the very beginning. The president is supposed to be quarantining. Thats what we have all been told, for the past nine months, when you have symptoms, you stay by yourself, you avoid even your family, you dont go out in public, you dont expose other people. I mean, thats one of the consistent messages that every doctor has told us, for all of these nine months. And that raises the issue, michael, of what youre suffering. Because maybe it was the Amy Coney Barrett event inside, indoors, and out, that was the super spreader. But then, the president kept going to all sorts of events from the debate with joe biden to all of these fundraisers. And why is it a state secret when he was last tested negative . When he last got tested negative . Why cant Kayleigh Mcenany answer that . And dont the American Public deserve to know the answer to that . Because that would help us explain why you got it and why so many other people have gotten it. Right, look, theres two things here. One is that the president is, you know, following a completely different set of rules than everybody else in america. And i think that undercuts, that sets him apart and i think it probably makes people angry that, hey, were, you know, moving about our lives, having all of these terrible impacts to our mobility and to our childrens education, which is shut down in places. And yet the president can sort of evade the kind of rules that we are having to live by. And look, i think the other thing that has been said to us repeatedly is the thing thats going to stop this is Contact Tracing. Is finding out every minute detail about where and when somebody was infected, so you can go back and contact all of those people. And i will say, its now, you know, t10 days, 11 days or whatever since i think i was probably infected on that saturday. I have not been contacted by the white house. Nobody from the white house has said boo and asked anything about where i was or who i talked to or who else i might have infected. So i think that that just shows you that theyre not, you know, theyre not taking it seriously, at least as it pertains to themselves. Thats a big deal, michael. Talk about that some more. First of all, you think maybe you were infected saturday night, by whom, its unclear. But you did go on air force one. The president came back and spoke to reporters off the record. So if he was infectious, its not impossible. Was he wearing a mask when he spoke to you . He was not. He was not wearing a mask and spoke to us for about ten minutes off the record. Its hard to know, right, if he had just been infected himself that day, the medical experts i think that you guys have been plague wou playing would suggest he probably wasnt very infectious at that point. I was at the white house earlier that day not in the rose garden for the event, but when you fly on air force one, the white house requires that you take a covid test earlier in the day, which i did. So i was at the white house campus. Its possible i ran into somebody else there who was infected. But its but that was the last time i was at the white house and last time, really, i was out and about. Its pretty clear, i think, somewhere along the course of that day is where i got infected. And just to be clear, no Contact Tracing. You havent been contacted yet. Were hearing that from other people who were at that event as well. Thats astounding. What does that tell you about the White House Level of seriousness and concern about dw i mean, its a microcosm of a larger story here. If theyre not concerned about an outbreak at the white house, what does that tell you and make it a bigger issue . Look, it is it is the result of the politics that have driven their response to this virus from the very beginning, right . Whether it was the testing fiascos early on and not having enough testing because President Trump didnt want to have more cases or whether it was the Vaccine Development and the pressure and leaning on the cdc, its all been driven by politics. And i think that even gets down to the white house itself, where people in the building didnt want to offend the president by Wearing Masks. And so reporters have, for months at the white house, worn masks all the time. We never take them off, unless youre taking a sip to drink or something. But, you know, very few of the white house staff, mark meadows would always come around without a mask. None of them do. Until the last couple of days. So, jonathan, you know, as i said, the president is supposed to be quarantining, but he didnt. And he exposed those secret Service Agents, we think, to the virus, even though we dont know if hes still shedding the virus. We dont fwhoknow when his last negative test was, dont know if hes still testing positive, dont know if he has a fever. Dont know whats happening. So obviously, the secret Service Agents are professionals, but i know that youve talked about how all of these things chip away at the morale. So what do you think is going on there this morning and Going Forward . Well, listen, i think its really important and ive said this all weekend long. Actions have consequences. And now were seeing these consequences come to bear. When secret Service Agents are exposed to this virus, you know, by their protectees or in the environment that theyre operating in, yes, they are affected. But also, their families are affected. Theres a second and third order of consequence. Theres a ripple effect, you know, both within the secret service operations, but also external to the secret service, with their families and people in the environment that they operate in. So, again, we shouldnt be here, but the impact to the secret service, thats whats starting to chip away at the morale, as you said. And this is the first time that i have actually seen active duty officers, agents, and supervisors speak out against what is going on. And a lot of it has to do with the strategy that was put forth. No one knows whos in charge of the Health Security policies around the white house. Is it the secret service . Is it the white house medical unit . Is it white house operations . Every day, it seems like theres somebody else in charge. We shouldnt be here. We should have had a very solidified strategy on how to operate the white house in a Global Pandemic that was strictly adhered to by staff and the senior officials. And clearly, we see that that was not done, and again, the action of not following that has led to the consequences that are were living with today. That is such an important context jonathan wakrow, thank you very much for your experience and thank you for sharing it with us. And michael, good to see you doing fairly well. Thank you, guys. Obviously, there are so many questions about coronavirus and whats happening today. New york city, the early epicenter of the pandemic is facing another round of shutdowns because cases are spiking in some neighborhoods. So whats the plan . We have some breaking news on the condition of the first lady, melania trump. It comes from our reporter, kate bennett, who saysthat thefirst lady is not considering leaving the white house at any time, according to a white house official. But listen to this. This is a quote. Melania trump is aware of the dangers of covid, potentially exposing others is not a risk she would take. The official said. Its almost as if shes cosmically subtweeting the president. Melania will not leave the white house because exposing others is not a risk she would take. This comes less than 24 hours after the president got in the car, potentially exposing secret Service Agents. I guess she gets her news somewhere other than where the president gets his news. And good morning, first lady. Joining us now is dr. Sanjay gupta, cnn chief medical correspondent. Sanjay, of course shes right. The idea that the president broke quarantine. He left quarantine i mean, of all of the things that we have all been taught, that everybody agreed to, its that when youre sick and you have that diagnosis, you stay in quarantine for i dont know, ten days, 14 days . Yeah, no doubt. Some of thats based on his own testing, but, yeah, at least ten days since you first develop symptoms. And as you know, incubation period is typically 14 days. So its and in his case, its isolation. Once youre diagnosis diagnosed covid, the term is isolation. Quarantine is for the people you may have exposed, which is possibly the situation with those agents. In a hospital, if a patient is going to leave against medical advice, which is what this is, you would have to sign forms, people would be involved, oftentimes you might have another service involved, maybe psychiatry, to say, are you sure you want to do this . Because this is against medical advice. Obviously, i doubt any of that happened here, but it breaks all sorts of protocols within the hospital itself. Im curious and we may never know the answer. Did the doctors try to council him out of that because of the fact that he is carrying the virus, but also for his own health. You know, he made the video, he looked pretty good. But he is also somebody who is on steroids. Hes on remdesivir. He got a dose of the monoclonal antibodies, twice he needed supplemental oxygen. What if he had had an event some sort in the car. Thats why youre in the hospital, right, in the first place, because there was worried, there was a period of instability in terms of his vital signs. This was a bad idea on every level that you can imagine. And i think it also informs where you are. One reason we may never know if the doctors tried to overrule him is because theyve lied to us already and we cant fully trust anything they say. Thats a fact at this point. But we know that politics has superseded the science, which informs us a little bit about this possible return to the white house today. We dont know if the president will get out. That would be the big news event of the day. We dont know if he will get out. But we do now know theres been evidence of politics superseding medicine, but even if he is sent back to the white house, it may not tell us that much about his condition. Right. I was very surprised. I was listening to these press conferences all weekend. And they did say, as you point out, he may go home as early as tomorrow. They said that yesterday. That sets expectations now, you know, that thats going to be the thing. And now niggle less than that, the patient will be zpo disappointed, the public will think, whats going on . So i was really surprised that they said that. One of the reasons is that he is getting an iv medication that is a fiveday course thats given via iv in the hospital, that is remdesivir. So he would require at least two more days of that medication, which is my understanding. He got one dose friday, saturday, sunday, should be today and tomorrow, at least. But again. He is in the throes of this disease. We have some knowledge of typically how it might progress and again, we hope it doesnt, but typically, day seven to ten, tend to be the worst. Thats when you have a significant amount of inflammation in the body and, you know, youve got to just make sure he doesnt have declines during that period. Why you would possibly go home during the period of time that may be the worst it makes no sense. So thats not a medical decision at that point. Thats a purely political decision. Also, ill point out, just the dexamethasone medication, the steroids. Its a medication thats commonly used. We use it in neurosurgery a lot, as well, to help decrease inflammation. It also does give people sort of a sense that they feel a lot better all of a sudden. It gives people a lot of energy, they often feel a lot of hunger, things like that. So it can be an artificial sense of feeling better, when, in fact, the disease is still progressing. So the doctors know all of this. Im confident of that. Weve looked at their backgrounds. These are very, you know, well qualified doctors. So its just a question of is, as you point out, the politics going to supercede the medical conditions . And how long can someone stay on dexamethasone . They can stay on it for some tie, but typically you have higher doses and then start to wean it down. This is a steroid. This is the highdose steroid medication. It can lead to, besides its intended effect, which is a decreased in inflammation. It can lead to behavioral changes, it can lead to hunger, people dont sleep. They have this thing called roid rage sometimes. So all of these things are reasons you would want to keep someone in the hospital and sort of gradually wean their dose. They may be able to go to an oral dose, a low dose even outside the hospital. But at this point, thats typically given in the hospital, along with the remdesivir, which is definitely a hospitalized drug. And then get that done of the antibodies. So sanjay, 209,734 deaths now in the United States with more than 7. 4 million cases, which now includes the ten growing number of cases that come from the white house itself. We are seeing the numbers not go down as we head into the fall. The case rate is going up. These are new case reported in the past week and you can see a number of states in the red, still, and there are some states alarming in the red, like wisconsin, indiana, and others. Where are we . Well, you know, one thing when you look at that map, sometimes it can feel a little bit misleading. Because you say, well, theres a lot of yellow, those are stable case. But if you go back and look, you realize that theyve got. To the top of their peak of cases and they may be stabilized, but theyre stabilized at a very high level. There have been more than 85,000 cases that have occurred since the president was admitted to the hospital. So im glad you raised this point, because, obviously, were talking a lot about the president , but the concern is that the trajectory of growth of the pandemic is increasing. This is a conversation we were all having on your program back in march, where we say, okay, its just not the number of people who are becoming infected daytoday, but the pace at which the new number of people are becoming infected are also growing. So 54,000, i believe, yesterday or over the last couple of days, we had a significant high in terms of the number of people. Im worried, you know, as we go into the colder weather, we already anticipated that the growth was going to increase, because people are more likely to be clustered in smaller spaces inside. We still dont have adequate testing in many places, to quickly identify cases. And right now youre getting an idea, even looking at what happened in the rose garden, how difficult it is to then go back and Contact Trace, which is one of the basic Health Principles of controlling a pandemic. Theres still just too much viral load and the spread is accelerating at this point. You say its difficult. We dont even think theyre trying to Contact Trace from that event. We havent heard any reports of Contact Tracing there. So it might be hard, but its really hard if you dont do it at all, which is a concern this morning, sanjay. Yeah. Thanks so much. Yeah, thats a good point. People should be getting those calls to say if they got exposed. Sanjay, well talk to you again in a little bit. This morning, texas voters suing to overturn an order from the republican governor, restricting the number of ballot drop boxes in each of the states counties to just one. One box per county. Democrats say that governor greg abbotts move is voter suppression. Cnns ed lavendera has the very latest from houston. Welcome to Harris County, texas. There are 2. 4 million registered voters in this county. And if youre one of those voters who is skeptical of voting in person because of the coronavirus pandemic or your concern that the Postal Service wont get your blot to tallot t Elections Office in time, county officials here had set up 12 satellite drop boxes, where people could drive their mailin ballots and drop them off at these 12 locations across the county. But the governor of texas has ordered all counties across the state to close all of those down and that they can only have one of those satellite drop boxes open in the weeks leading up to the election. So this is the story of what it will take to get to that ballot box in Harris County. Its just after 9 00 in the morning. We are in the far Northeast Corner of Harris County. The only drop box now available in this county is at Energy Football stadium, which is 45 miles away. But one of the locations that was closed down was just over 20 miles. So its kind of along the way. So were going to drive by that location first. Harris county, which includes the city of houston, is nearly 1,800 square miles, much larger than rhode island. This county building is one of the 11 drop sites that was shut down by governor greg abbott. It took us about 31 minutes to get here. Its where we met peaches sullivan, who was dropping off Voter Registration forms for nursing home residents. People are still worried. Why would you risk having people come out even more when they dont have to, especially with the preexisting conditions that they have . This is a driver youre going to see, almost like a slice of america. Youll see a little bit of everything on this drive from northeast Harris County into energy stadium, where this drop box location is. Of course, critics of the governor say this was really just a masquerade way of suppressing voter turnout, making it more difficult for people in highly democratic towns like houston and austin to safely submit their votes in the age of this covid pandemic. The Texas Governor says his decision will increase voter security and help stop illegal voting. So this is the one drop box ballot site in Harris County. The Texas Governors move to close down the ballot drop box sites is an abuse of power. To make it so our voters who have disabilities, our elderly voters, have to dry over an hour, more than 50 miles, in some cases, to drop off their mail ballot. Its unfair, its prnejudicial and its dangerous. The drive took us about an hour and eight minutes, so round trip, youre looking at about two hours and 15 minutes. And quite honestly, it was an easy drive. We caught the traffic at a good time, relatively smooth sailing considering how bad traffic can get in this city. And john, there have been two federal lawsuits filed in the last two days, trying to change the governors proclamation that was issued late last week. The governor says that he has actually expanded akccess to voting, and in some cases thats true. Early voting has expanded, but the governor also says this is a move that he says will ensure transparency at the ballot box and stop attempts at illegal voting. Ed lavendera, thank you for that very long drive to illustrate a point about whats going on here. Were joined by jessica huseman, who i think is a texas resident and has unique perspective on this. Its interesting, jessica, because the governor really, his defense for this isnt even that strenuous. The idea that this somehow protects security, theres just no proof of that in any way. No, theres no proof of it at all. I think the texans that i know, i live in Dallas County, the texans that i know are sort of stunned by how brazen this is. Because he hasnt really attempted to justify it at all beyond vague considerations of election integrity. But a couple of weeks ago, the state appealed a change that a court had made to make voter access easier by saying that we cant make changes this close to the election, it will throw things into chaos. And here he is a couple of days later, making a gigantic change to the way that people who are going to vote by mail or absentee ballot are going to choose to vote. This is madness. Im so glad that ed did that reporting for us. The idea that his closest one was 45 miles away. And you saw the one that was closer, that was halfway that far and it looks perfectly fine, looks completely legitimate. Theres no questions about security. The woman was going there already to drop off the registrations. I mean, this is its just impossible to imagine what Governor Abbott is doing here, other than restricting voting access. I think that youre right. And i think that while it is certainly true that the heavily populated counties like harris and travis and Dallas County will be uniquely impacted by this, there will certainly be a lot of traffic around those dropboxes, there were also gigantic ruler counties in texas that take up far more square mileage than Harris County. Brewster county is more than 6,000 square miles, which means that it is larger than the state of rhode island and delaware combined. And imagine if either one of those states said that they would only have one ballot dropbox in the state and then imagine if both did. This is a huge state. And only having one drop box per county is basic voter suppression. I dont know that theres another way to characterize there. The reason why theres so much focus on this case, its a single entendre. Theres a separate issue as we head to election day, which is the idea, when ballots need to be postmarked by and how many days after november 3rd they will be counted. Now, in wisconsin, this is an issue. And the Wisconsin Supreme Court now says that its going to look into this. So tell us whats going on there and the significance . So, the wisconsin there was a judge in wisconsin that a couple of weeks ago ruled that absentee ballots could be counted for a few days after the election, as long as they were postmarked by november 3rd. And republicans attempted to appeal that. They made a very vague argument about how ballots that arrived later compromised the integrity of ballots that arrive on time, which doesnt make a lot of sense to me, because as you and i both know, ballots can arrive for several days after people send them through no fault of their own because of the unreliability of usps, so a series of very confusing Court Decisions have come out about that decision, but its still being battled out. So at the end of the day, clerks in wisconsin are left pretty confused, and not really able to prepare for what they need to prepare for for election day, because they dont know when they can start processing ballots or how long they have to count them. And this is really troubling to the Election Officials ive talked to there. Can i only imagine. So at the moment, is the rule still that voters have to have it postmarked by election day, but it still has six days after that to be counted . Or has that all been thrown in flux . As far as i understand, that is still the rule. But its still in flux. And we watch this every year. These Court Decisions that go right down to the wire, that deeply impact the way Election Administrators need to do their jobs and how poll workers need to do their job. That leaves less and less time to train them, less and less time for the county and municipalities to prepare, and what that ends up doing is confusing voters on election day and making the entire process far more difficult. Jessica huseman, thank you very much for alerting us all to whats going on in some of these states. We really appreciate it. Thank you. Thats some of trumps favorite insults about health of his opponents, but now hes the one whos sick. John avlon is here with a reality check. So now what, john. Ali, theres never been a president felled by a serious illness so dloclose to an elect. With trump now saying, we should take this disease seriously, because after 210,000 american deaths, it has affected him personally. We all wish the president and everyone inspect white house covid outbreak a speedy recovery. But its a comic twist, because trump has deployed the politics of sickness in this campaign and the last, trying to stir rumors that his democratic opponents were seriously ill. But just maybe this turn of events will allow our collective fever to break. So lets back up, take a look at what donald trump was doing almost four years to the day before his diagnosis. Heres a woman, shes supposed to fight all of these Different Things and she cant make it 15 feet to her car. Give me a break. Give me a break. So hes making fun of Hillary Clinton for having pneumonia. And that wasnt all. His campaign released ads like this. Hillary clinton doesnt have the fortitude, strength, or stamina to lead in our world. It all injected rocket fuel into countless memes and Hillary Health hashtags, often amplified by russia. The muscle memory endures, because team trump has been trying to run the same play against joe biden. 2020 nominees are less than four years apart, but trump has been straining to raise questions about bidens Mental Fitness in speeches, ads, social media, via surrogates, struggling to explain away strong performances to date that would reflect neither sleepiness or senility. After trumps speech, Rush Limbaugh said that biden must have pretaped it. Bidens cnn town hall talked about performanceenhancing drug use around a disastrous debate in which trump himself was possibly sick and likely contagious came Conspiracy Theory speculation that biden was wearing an ear piece. Have we mentioned that projection is one of trumps favorite political weapons. Because not coincidentally, we have also learned that the russians are spreading the same kind of disinformation via social media, the kind of stuff that trump has even retweeted. But toent debt zbrakted from the fact that the literal politics of sickness affects all americans through health care, and the Trump Administration is preparing to argue in front of the Supreme Court that the Affordable Care act, aka obamacare, is unconstitutional with nothing in place to replace it. We can do better. Witness the fact that the Biden Campaign paused all negative ads out of respect for the president s condition. The trump campaign, true to form, refused to do the same. Illness should inspire compassion. A recognition that we are all flawed and broken in different ways. But theres a common underlying condition underneath the politics of sickness and the politics of personal destruction. Both are symptoms of hyperpartisanship, which too often evaluates cruelty and justifies laws through a vision of politics as a version of civil war. We need to start overcoming this affliction, and address its root causes if were going to see anything resembling real healing in the american body of politic. And thats your reality check. I think, john, you just revealed why the president has been so squirrely about his health. Because obviously, he thinks its weakness to be in the hospital. So hes trying to avoid it any way he can. But you judge for yourself whether or not you think that suv photo steunt is a sign of strength or weakness. Thanks, john. Let me say up front before i get into that, we wish the president , the first lady, everybody infected including my predecessor nothing but a speedy recovery. Were still in the process, alisyn. This is reasonably complicated, a local component. Some folks from new jersey, staff members, but by all accounts, it is a national component, and so we got on the case immediately at the state level and local level but weve had we need more out of the federal yet. No evidence but please, god, if you know youre exposed to someone who is covid positive, you need to quarantine and a test right away doesnt mean much because the vir us takes a while to incubate, so were still in the throes of this. Are you calling the 206 people, its last number that i had, to be in quarantine now for a couple of weeks . Yes, based on everything we know, theres no reason to not say that. The this virus doesnt care who you are and new jersey doesnt care who you are. If you think youve been in touch or in the midst of someone who is covid positive, you have to take yourself off the field. Now everybody who was there, more than 200 people, were in contact with someone who is positive, President Trump. Yes. Perhaps other teammates as well. I dont want to be the grinch but if youve been in contact, you got no choice. You got to take yourself off the field and then five or seven days into that, get tested, still stay off the field, probably get tested again and then when youre through that, then youre okay. But this is, you know, this is, borders on reckless in terms of exposing people not just in new jersey, but looks like from folks around the country, who have now scattered by the way. You say it borders on reckless. Lets go over some of the details. This was a reception for at least 200 people. There was also an indoor component a vip reception for a small amount of people in a photoop with President Trump. Three attendees told cnn most people at the event were not Wearing Masks and we know that by then, hope hicks, one of the president s closest aides, had already tested positive and so is it more than bordering on reckless . Thats my understanding of the facts as well, alisyn. Its really frustrating, i have to say, and we have paid an enormous price in new jersey. Weve lost over 14,000 people. Weve had spikes of late in various parts of the state. Were doing everything we can to do the right thing, and when you have behavior like this, by the way, we all ought to step back and accept the fact that this is an ongoing series of lessons of flouting what we know is what you need to do to drive this virus into the ground, namely cover your face, socially distant, the virus is more lethal indoors than outdoors and if you dont feel well or been exposed, stay home. Get away from other people. Its basic stuff. This is yet another chapter sadly and i hope its a lesson that now weve all learned. Governor, you said that you were going to need the feds help. Is this your responsibility, to Contact Trace now for all of these 200 people, is that the responsibility of new jersey, because it happened in new jersey or is it the responsibility of the white house . Its a combination. Were taking the lead. We got on it immediately, both at the state level and the local level, but we need cooperation from the feds. We ultimately got a list of the attendees by midafternoon on friday, but we need more cooperation out of the administration. The local piece of this got going as i said immediately. Remember, the staff all live in new jersey, even though the attendees were from around the country, including new jersey, the staff is all local so you can imagine weve been all over that. Its an allin moment as it has been for the past seven months but we need everyone to punch at their weight here. Governor, former governor chris christie, have you spoken with him . He and i have had private communications as between my wife and the former first lady. He is in our prayers and he knows that were here for him. Can you tell us how hes doing . Is he having more than mild symptoms . I have no insight into his situation other than he came out and said that he had tested positive. I think its now been widely reported he as a precautionary matter admitted himself to a hospital and he and his family, again, are in our prayers. Are you able to say if you know what kind of treatment hes getting today . I actually do not, alisyn. Again, hes in our prayers though. And ours. Im only asking because im worried about him. Im worried about him, that he was so close to President Trump during that week that President Trump we now know was exposed and clearly had the virus. The white house wont tell us the last time he tested negative, but it seems safe to assume that governor christie was right next to him before the president knew that he was sick, and so im just worried, and so can you tell us when the last time you spoke to him was . Listen, im worried as well, alisyn, not just about governor christie, but i said a minute ago, bedminster is a chapter in a long book of now countless chapters of indoor close proximity gathering with no face coverings and the folks at the top beginning with the president have to set an example for the rest of our country to do the right thing so im worried about anybody exposed and theres been a raft of that around the white house. Governor murphy, we know you have a busy day. Thank you as always for taking the time to be on new day. Great to be with you, alisyn. Thank you very much. New day continues right now. Questions about how seriously the president is taking the virus, even if n the face of his own struggle, getting into the car and doing the driveby. As a sign of gratitude show folks hes fighting for them. He has his own protective detail putting them at risk so he can go out and wave. The white House Doctors having a difficult time answering basic questions. I was trying to reflect the upbeat attitude the team has had, in doing so dame off we were trying to hide something. It shakes the Public Confidence and makes it harder to believe. In medicine you dont throw the kitchen sink at a patient with the abundant of caution. The president might be the only person on the plan tote receive this beginning of medicine. Announcer this is new day with Alisyn Camerota and john berman. Welcome to our viewers in the United States and around the world. This is new day. This morning we have no clue how the president is do iing in ter of his lung function, all we know is yesterday the president took a drive for a photoop outside of Walter Reed Medical Center to wave to his supporters, though hes supposed to be in isolation. The White House Medical Team okayed the driveby but other doctors say it put the secret Service Agents in that car at risk as well as their families. The administration gave no notice to reporters which of course breaks longstanding protocol and this stunt follows a weekend of very conflicting reports about the president s health. The president looked better in his twitter video sunday than saturday, thats about as solid as it gets, now that the president s doctor admitted to lying to the American People. So were going to lay out what weve been told but whether its to be believed is a completely different matter. Were told the president is receiving a variety of dreams from remdesivir and a steroid desk dexamethasone, he experienced two drops in oxygen levels and given supplemental oxygen friday. Dr. Sean connolly lied about that in this first News Conference on saturday. The president had a high fever, they wont tell us how high. Now they say he has no fever. They say theyve looked at his lung scans but wont tell us if theres any damage. Ten people in the president s circle are infected so far including the first lady, two senators, the president of notre dame and governor chris christie, who is in the hospital at this moment and we have no new word on his condition. The pan demme tick self is showing signs of worsening again, 23 states are reporting a rise in cases, that graph right there is the reported number of new deaths around the country. Joining us now, dr. Sanjay gupta, cnn chief medical correspondent, john harwood and dr. James phillips, nonmilitary attending physician at walter
