Lives lost by Christmas Day and still accelerating at 3,000 deaths a day. It seems clear that hes not going to read the bill, sign it or veto it. If he doesnt sign the bill by the end of the day, then actual Unemployment Benefits will cease. Good morning and thank you so much for joining us. Im boris sanchez. Victor and christi have the morning off. Following breaking developments in a Christmas Day explosion in nashville, but before we take you there for a live report, we must mention the growing dread. Another surge in coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and deaths. And an even larger surge that were expecting after millions of americans gather for the holida holidays. Southern california is one of the areas hardest hit right now. In Los Angeles County the Public Health director says someone dies from coronavirus every ten minutes. Were going to bring you the latest on the virus and vaccination effort in just a moment. As for that explosion in tennessee, investigators have found what might be human remains near the site of what appears to be an intentional bombing. The blast damaging dozens of buildings and injuring at least three people yesterday morning. We also now have sound of a recording that warned people near the rv that exploded to evac cue wait. Listen closely to this. Evacuate now. If you can hear this message. Evacuate now. Bizarre. Natasha chen joins us live from nashville. Natasha, whats the latest youre hearing from investigators . Boris, investigators are still working on a very large blast radius and thats why we are so far back from the perimeter. This is where media is allowed to be. We are on Second Avenue and that is where the explosion happened. Its several, several blocks away from where we are. The mayor last night did say 41 bhiss were damaged in this blast. People who lived near where the explosion happened. Witnesses telling cnn how scary that was. City officials tauted the efforts of six metro Police Officers. When they arrived on scene, they heard the message you heard playing from the rv and helped people evacuate. When i asked the mayor what message he has, heres what he told me. My message is expect a knock on your door. It will be a puzzle for a period of time, but i expect theyll solve it. This should not be in america where you have violence on the street. Reporter he said that this was done to create chaos on Christmas Day but that the city is resilient and will rebuild. Just a note on the three people that are hospitalized, those are civilians and the police chief told me those are not life threatening injuries but, still, they were first relieved, the city officials said, there wasnt more damage to human life, no more injuries than there already are. However, there is a bit of anger now in trying to figure out why this happened and, of course, there is a curfew that this downtown area is under at this moment. That started the afternoon of Christmas Day, 4 30 p. M. Local time and will extend into sunday afternoon to try to keep people away from this area as investigators do their work, boris. Were glad those victims are going to survive their injuries. Of course, well keep coming back to you as we get more news. Thank you for the latest. Natasha chen reporting from nashville. Despite repeated warnings, millions of americans traveled over the holidays raising concerns that america is weeks away from yet another devastating new spike in covid19 cases. Cnns alison kosik takes a look. Reporter starting monday in the u. K. , all passengers must have a negative covid19 test within three days of boarding a flight to the u. S. New york governor Andrew Comeau praised the decision by the cdc for passengers to be tested who are flying from the u. K. Testing people for covid19 before they get on planes is common sense. We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past and we must continue to do everything we can to keep new yorkers and americans safe cuomo said in a statement friday. The u. S. Centers for Disease Control announced the new testing requirements for travelers but research by the agencys own scientists shows it may only have a small impact on the spread of the new u. K. Strain of the covid virus. According to them, testing three days before a flight might reduce the risk of spreading the virus by just 5 to 9 . Pfizer and moderna are testing to see if their vaccines work against the new variant which thus far has not been detected in the u. S. Southern california is grappling with surging covid19 hospitalizations and deaths as the state passes another grim milestone reporting more than 300 new covid deaths for a Third Straight day. In Los Angeles County, a person dies every ten minutes from covid19 the countys Public Health director says. I think people dont think coronavirus will happen to them. They think coronavirus will happen to another family but there is no safety other than those Public Health measures that we have been preaching from the mountaintops. Reporter as christmas comes to an end and we head into the new year, experts say the safest way to celebrate is at home with the people you live with or online with friends and family. Those that host a new years celebration, the cdc suggests staying outside, limiting the number of guests, wearing and making extra masks available and keeping background music low to avoid shouting. What weve just seen these amplification events and thats whats happened at the end of this year in the u. S. We had, you know, thanksgiving, we had labor day, we had halloween and each one of these events brought lots of people together and just gave the virus more fuel to move through the population. So christmas is going to do a similar thing. Reporter and the tsa says in the days before christmas, more than 1 Million People pass through security checkpoints at airports across the country. Its stoking fears from Health Experts that we could see a spike in coronavirus cases on top of what were seeing now. Boris . Expected to be a very, very bleak winter. Alison kosik, thanks for that report. A new wrinkle in the back and forth over the Coronavirus Relief bill this morning. As millions of americans are waking up, checking their Bank Accounts and seeing zeroes. Reasonable is how one republican ally of President Trump is framing his latest demands to toss out the deal over a demand for bigger paychecks to americans. The deal is part of a package that would fund the government and its physically parked at maralago right now waiting on the president s signature as millions of americans are set to lose Unemployment Benefits today. But if you look at senator Lyndsey Grahams tweets, theres little indication the president is actually going to sign it. Lets get right to cnns Sarah Westwood in West Palm Beach, florida. Good morning, sarah. Senator Lindsey Graham now opting to back the president s point of view instead of mitch mcconnells. He hes saying 2,000 checks are reasonable. He said this package provides a lot of relief for people who are hurting and should have been done months ago, end quote. This pivot from graham, a sign of the power that trump still holds over the republican party. Reporter yeah, boris. And a sign of the reversal trump is essentially asking republicans to make on a bill that they voted for believing at the time that they had the white houses backing on this. Remember, that 600 figure for the individual checks was something that trumps own treasury secretary brought to congress as the white houses proposal. So its been sort of a stunning reversal for President Trump to come out and oppose it now. Senator Lindsey Graham was down here in West Palm Beach yesterday and played a round of golf with the president. Before that, republicans on capitol hill had no clarity as to just how seriously trump planned to challenge the bill, whether his opposition appointed to a vote tow threat or whether he was trying to put pressure on republicans. Graham gave a little bit of insight into that yesterday. I want to read you what he tweeted after he got off the course with President Trump. After spending time with President Trump, i am more convinced that he is wanting to give americans 2,000 checks. And challenge section 230 big tech liability protection. That was why trump vetoed the Defense Authorization bill. The relief bill also was initially supported by a veto proof majority although its unclear how republicans will react to increased pressure from trump. Yesterday the president doubled down on the calls to increase the individual payments saying made many calls and had meetings at Trump International in palm beach, florida. Why would politicians not want to give them 2,000 rather than 600. It wasnt their fault, it was china. Give our people the money. Now the relief bill was bundled with the spending bill that would keep the government open. That bill needs to be signed by monday for the government to stay open. So a lot of pressure on President Trump as people wait to see whether they will actually get checks this next week as they were promised when the relief bill passed, boris. Yeah, sarah. Its almost as if the president wants people to think he had no input in this and mark meadows, Steve Mnuchin and his negotiators played no role in advancing his agenda when it came to this bill getting through congress. Sarah, quickly i want to go back to the national explosion. We know the president was briefed on the incident. Do we have any idea if the white house has any plans to address it . Reporter boris, thats not something the white house has answered or indicated at this point. The president was briefed on it yesterday, as you mentioned, but we did not hear anything from him yesterday, even though as we saw he was tweeting about the stimulus bill, tweeting about other unrelated things and not tweeting about the national bombing. Its unclear hes continuing to receive updates or whether well hear from him about it today. Sarah westwood reporting from West Palm Beach. Thank you so much. Still to come. Covid vaccinations are set to begin across several european nations beginning tomorrow as a new, faster spreading variant of the coronavirus continues to pop up around the world. France, the latest country to detect a positive case of that variant that was first identified in the united kingdom. By the way, the cdc has issued new guidelines requiring a negative covid test from all passengers traveling to the United States from the u. K. And due to the new strain, england has moved more parts of the country into tier 4 lockdown, their toughest restriction. Lets go live to cnns cyril vanier. Cyril, france going to distribute vaccines tomorrow. Give us a sense of what youre hearing from people there on the ground. Yeah, boris. Its an absolutely massive undertaking because it is common to the entire european union. Thats 450 Million People across 27 countries. Now france, french authorities, theyre starting the vaccination tomorrow, on the side of the authorities theres cautious optimism because they know this is the closest thing they have to a Silver Bullet against this pandemic even though theyre aware, of course, of major logistic call challenges. The only thing they have is the Pfizer Vaccine which has to be kept at minus 90 degrees celsius. Thats hard on the cold chain and supply chain. On the side of the population, theres a bit more hesitancy. At the beginning of the month according to our estimates, about a half of the french population intended to get the vaccine, that leaves roughly half of the population that doesnt believe in it, doesnt want to get the vaccine. For a vaccine sfleld ten months, they have questions about it. Having said that, there is also the case anecdotally of people who are not sure theyre going to get it themselves but have approved for their elderly parents in Nursing Homes to get it. So within the subsection of the population that is more vulnerable to the virus, theres a little bit more acceptance of the virus beg your pardon, of the vaccine, boris. Cyril, what do we know about the positive case of the virus that was found in france . Reporter worrying news in france. This is a French National who lives in the u. K. And traveled a week ago, saturday. Same day i traveled from the u. K. To france. So i know exactly what the timing was. At the time the u. K. Had not hit the panic button on this new variant and moved the country into the toughest tier 4 restrictions so travel was free at the time. And it was freely available, i should say. That person arrived in france, in the city of toor, then tested positive for covid19. Because he traveled from the u. K. , his test was sent for dna sequencing. We found out on Christmas Day that it was, indeed, the new variant, more transmissible variant of covid19. Its quite possible there are already more cases because we are told that other positive tests have been sent for dna sequencing that present clues that perhaps they also belong to this new variant, boris. Yeah. Notably, cyril, some experts believe that variant is already in the United States but because that dna sequencing isnt being done, its difficult to detect. Cyril vanier reporting from paris. Thank you so much. Several countries in asia are seeing a resurge against. South korea finding more than 1100 cases on friday. That was a day after it hit a record high of 1200. Japan also seeing its highest number of new cases on friday. More than 3800. Thats the Third Straight day of recordbreaking numbers for japan. Cnns celina wang joins us now. Theyre seeing restrictions to slow the spread. Do we have any idea why . Well, boris, whats interesting is actually japan and south korea had been praised for handling the pandemic rem k remarkably well without using the type of strict lockdowns weve seen in other parts of the world. In japan, for instance, the government doesnt have any legal means to force covid restrictions, but experts credit a culture of mask wearing as well as people generally add hearing to guidelines. But it is clear if you look at the data that covid is gaining momentum here in japan. In the first nine months it took more than 9 months to reach 100,000 but it took less than two months to double that figure to now more than 200,000. I have spoken to Infectious Disease experts who are critical in what they see with the prioritization of keeping the economy open. In fact, the japanese government had been encouraging people to go out and travel and eat during this Domestic Travel campaign which the government has only recently temporarily halted. Boris, if we look at the case of south korea, it had been the pinnacle of tackling covid19 due to the tracking system. Its ordered Tourist Attractions to close down but its yet to enter any lockdown. The challenge south korea is facing now is the previous waves of infections were concentrated because of large clusters in churches and nightclubs. Now theyre harder to trace because theyre coming from places like restaurants and offices. Even though this new surge were seeing in asia may pale in some of the other increases and its hard to obtain these outbreaks especially during the winter months when the cold weather is driving people indoors. Boris, quite frankly everyone is dealing with covid19 fatigue. Boris . Yeah. Even the countries that have served as models to the world to containing this virus. 12 months into this pandemic are dealing with flareups and underscores what you said about this being an incredibly difficult mission. Celina wang, thank you very much. Back to the United States where despite record high numbers of covid counts, Many Americans are traveling for the holidays. For some passengers, rules are about to change. Remember the reports about the new covid strain in the u. K. . They will have proof of negative tests entering the United States from the u. K. Joining us is dr. Carlos del rio. Thank you so much for joining us early on this holiday weekend. I want to ask you about these new cdc restrictions. How effective do you think they will be in protecting against this new covid strain . Good morning, boris. Im not sure theyre going to be that effective. Theyre requiring testing within 72 hours. What i think would have been nice is to have the negative test, pcr test 72 hours before boarding and a rapid antigen test done at the moment of boarding. I think that will increase the security to ensure a person with covid is not getting on the plane. Also have Rapid Testing done at the time of landing in the United States. One test in my mind is not enough, i think you need to do two tests at least. Doctor, weve heard from some experts who say it is likely this variant is already here in the United States. Would you concur with that idea . Its highly possible. I mean, i think this you know, this virus is moving very quickly. We saw that at the beginning of the pandemic. I wouldnt be surprised if its here now. I want to stress with the public that rather than getting terribly concerned about the new strain, i think we need to reinforce the restrictions weve been talking about. Weve been talking about mask wearing, social distancing, crowded places, avoiding places with poor circulation and people, we need to hunker down, remind them about those restrictions. Very excited about the vaccines rolling out. We have to do a better job of rolling out and getting the vaccines and it is our best line of defense right now. One last question about the new variant. You mentioned the vaccines. The ceo of pfizer says hes cautiously optimistic their vaccine will work. Do you have any reason or evidence to think it may not . No, i have none. I think that the mutation is in an area where the vaccine has such a broad antibody response, i dont see why the vaccines approved, neither the pfizer nor moderna would not work against the strain. Doctor, you mentioned the need to hunker down. You know, its difficult during the holidays to tell families that they have to stay separated. Theres pandemic fatigue. Theyve spent, you know, months ostensibly separated already. Is there a safe way to celebrate new years eve with your loved ones without, you know, getting into a situation where youre propagating a surge that were likely to see in three weeks . You know, i think its really important if youre going to do that, that you stay within your bubble. That people get tested before they get together, once, maybe twice just like when youre traveling. I think to limit the gathering to less than 10 people. As much as you can do to have not a lot of people, strangers. As ive said over and over, your level of protection is as strong as the weakest link. We learned how quickly and how easily this virus spreads. We have to take all of the precautions possible. Doctor, i wanted to ask because weve been hearing a lot about vaccines, very positive news. Weve been hearing less about treatments for those already infected with covid19. What do we know about how coronavirus treatments are doing in a fight to eradicate the pandemic . Treatments have not been as exciting. There have been progresses but we dont have a magic bullet or a drug that cures the infection. The only drug being remdesivir. It really has very little effect otherwise. We have dexamethasone that decreases mortality and then we have the monoclonal antibodies. I think they need to be scaled up more. They have to be used in outpatient settings, people who have high risk of progressing the disease. I think we need to be doing a better job of getting the monoclonal antibodies ought to people. And from ending up in the icu. Doctor, we have a little bit more time with you than i expected. I wanted to present a hypothetical to you getting back to the idea of holiday travel. Say someone has already traveled to be with their loved ones for christmas and theyre trying to figure out what they should do next . What is the best course of action to try to prevent further spread if youve already exposed yourself to covid by traveling . Masking is really important. We know wearing a facemask prevents you from transmitting to others. Wearing the facemask is important. If you are inside with others, wear a facemask and remember to socially distance. If you are sitting with someone and talking, make sure youre wearing a facemask and sitting six feet apart. That will be an important way to stop spread. Go out on a walk. Dont be in a closed group. All of that will help you. Dr. Carlos delacenserl rio, tha very much. Merry christmas to you. A lot of fits and starts with sports this year. Fortunately were finishing 2020 strong.
