Sometimes i have nightmares of things that have happened, just as my siblings being chained up or beaten. My parents took my whole life from me, but now im taking my life back. Announcer this is new day weekend with Victor Blackwell and christi paul. Good new day to you. Democrats are demanding are release of the full Mueller Report. They feel they are only at the beginning of this thing. Where did the mueller revelations end, at this point. Do they end with impeachment . Democrats are divided on that issue. Theres a Conference Call scheduled for monday to talk about what they do next. Jerry nadler requested the full report. The Justice Department is unlikely to hand it over without a court fight. Here is our cnn correspondent. Reporter the fight only beginning. They are sending a subpoena to the Justice Department demanding the full report, wanting all the information by may 1st. They are not expecting to get what they are demanding. That could mean a court fight could take place, months and weeks to get what the democrats want. They are planning on issuing other subpoenas. They have been authorized to send subpoenas to five people for records and dates from the white house as they prepare to testify before bob muellers investigation. One of the former officials, don mcgahn, the president s former attorney who, according to the Mueller Report was ordered to fire bob mueller. Mcgahn resisted in doing so. Democrats were investigating obstruction of justice and want to learn more. One thing that is dividing the parties in the days and weeks ahead is whether to pursue impeachment proceedings. Elizabeth warren, the senator from massachusetts called on the House Democrats to open up the impeachment proceedings. House Democratic Leaders are not so sure. Jerry nadler said that is not the goal. The goal is to investigate what happens. A vote on impeachment would be after impeachment. He is not rushing into this at the moment. The democrats could pursue a line of investigation that the special counsel mostly avoided, thats the president s finances. They plan to investigate whether the president is compromised by a foreign interest. Is this just another attempt to find another russian link to the president after mueller found no conspiracy . Christina, what do the democrats want to know, specific pli, about the information they are seeking. Simply put, they want to follow the money. Thats how one congressman put it. House intelligence and House Financial Services are teaming up to subpoena banks, including one of trumps lenders, deutsche bank. Intelligence is looking into whether the president is compromised by foreign entities while Financial Services is examining elicit activity and whether any of trumps businesses are implicated in those activities. Another committee, ways and means is pressing for trumps tax returns. This group has jurisdiction over the irs, which has an obligation to audit the president s tax returns. Lawmakers want to make sure thats happening. House oversight issues a subpoena to an Accounting Firm that compiled the president s financial statements. All of it against the backdrop of the house judiciary for the subpoena for the unredacted Mueller Report. What are the chances the democrats get the information they want on the president s businesses fansds . That is the big question. It depends on each request, the nature of it and what kind of subpoena it is. The fight over the president s tax returns is probably headed to the courts. Remember, the treasury department, which oversees the irs rejected the committees request and theres another deadline this week, which well report on. Treasury will likely continue to resist this. House fnsz shl services might have more luck subpoenaing the banks. They oversee the banks. Its unlikely the banks ignore the request from that committee. As for the subpoena of trumps accounting records, House Oversight chairman, alie ja summings overstepped. They have told the Accounting Firm they would press legal charges if they comply with cummings. Is there a risk to the democrats in launching all of these investigations . Yeah. I think the risk is the American Public grows tired of democratic investigation. They want kons to spend its time addressing health care and economic policies. But, that risk does not seem to be stopping the democrats pursuing this investigation. Thank you. Lets talk about where the democrats are going next. The reporter and coauthor of the politico play book is with us. Thank you so much. Monday, this Conference Call among Democratic Leaders, what are they focusing on at that point . I thinkhey are focusing opur getting the full Mueller Report and how to message that. Congressmen are obsessed with how to perceive, have the public perceive what they are working on, why they are focusing on this even though the bulk of the Mueller Report is out there. So, they will all want to get on the same page when dealing with this. They are not on the same page, as we know. Listen to what Elizabeth Warren tweeted. The severity of this misconduct demands elected officials of both parties set aside Political Considerations and do their duty. The house should initiate impreachment against the president of the United States. Dem have tried to focus on the legislative priorities, investigations, 2020 election. How much support is there, realistically, among democrats for impeachment . Theres huge support in the base of the party for impeaching trump. They feel theres enough evidence there from obstruction. Whether its a good idea is another matter. You dont see democrats charging the hill and demanding this happen. If there was a smoking gun in the Mueller Report about conspiracy or collusion, it would have been off to the races. Given the fact Elizabeth Warren is the only major democratic president ial candidate after the Mueller Report to come out with impreachment, then, you know, where are the other candidates on this . The fact they are staying away, they want to defeat trump on, you know, proper electoral terms. You know, they feel like they have a better chance against trump than someone like mike pence that could clean the slate. No one is charging mike pence with this stuff. They can have their positive agenda of health care, energy, jobs and also they can keep the mueller cloud over trump with these various investigations. Tif we look back at the clinton years, the impreachment, a lot of people saw that as a failing on the clinton part as opposed to, you know, politics at play here with President Trump. Is there a risk that all of these investigations could paint, in some way, a sympathetic character of the president . He is, you know, everything he says, i am under attack. This is a witch hunt. Does it further that narrative . I think most persons want to see trumps tax returns. They want to make sure he is not, you know, under foreign influence with his business dealings. So, you know, thats a marker for democrats, they feel like they have the public support behind them. Remember, if they launch impeachment proceedings, then every trump supporter in 2016 or many of them would rally around the president and view him as a matter and work doubly hard to defend him in 2020. That impeachment effort was unsuccessful and the Senate Republicans that he would come out much stronger and, you know, if you are going to kill the king, you have to be successful. You cant have this, lets try this impeachment, see how it works. No, you have to know you have the votes, otherwise, its a wasted effort and backfires on you. Thats cautious right now. Thank you so much. Thank you. President trump is ticked, lets try that, at the former white house counsel. Why the Mueller Report caused the president to lash out at don mcgahn. President trump went to twitter to attack don mcgahn calling his statements in the Mueller Report fabricated and totally untrue. He said watch out for people who take socalled notes when the notes never existed until needed. Thats the point of notes, they are there when you need them. Thats true. You dont go to them until you need them. Trump is frustrated with the most damming episodes in the Mueller Report including when mcgahn took notes. Whats interesting about this, the president was saying, none of my lawyers take notes, they are great lawyers. I dont know what to make of that. I think most lawyers take notes, maybe im wrong. What are youere . Reporter theres right and theres an incident in the Mueller ReportPresident Trump expresses to don mcgahn, in his experience, good lawyers dont take notes, one of the tense moments in the report that shows the fraught relationship between the president and mcgahn. Trump is angry at the betrayal of a dishonest portrayal report and upset about the way the news covered the findings. Rudy giuliani has gone after mcgahn, questioning the recollection of events as he told them to investigators. Mcgahn spent 30 hours speaking to the special counsel. Its a mystery why Rudy Giuliani feels the need to relitigate what the attorney general concluded not destruction, but described in the report. Some of the events include in june, 2017, when mueller said the president called mcgahn at home, askedim to fire special Counsel Robert Mueller on the grounds according to trump, he thought mcgahn had conflicts of interest. In january, 2018, the New York Times reported trump wanlted to fire mueller. Trump instructioned mcgahn to lie, essentially, that that ever took place. Trump, according to the tweets, victor and christie, frustrated with how that is depicted in the Mueller Report. Here is something that a lot of people noticed. This information about mcgahn was absent from barrs summary. Whats the take away there. Reporter theres been scrutiny on whether he did accurately describe the contents of the Mueller Report in that summary and the day the report was released, in his press conference. The fourpage summary that bill barr released the weekend after the russia probe was wrapped details about people and events. It was a top line summary, one, there wasnt evidence of the Trump Campaign collusion with russia and, two, mueller did not reach a conclusion on obstruction, but according to barr, there wasnt sufficient evidence for obstruction. Here is what barr wrote in the summary, the evidence developed in the investigation is not sufficient to establish that the president committed an obstruction of justice. Critics look at that exchange between the president and mcgahn, question how that isnt evidence of potentially some sort of obstructive behavior. That did not make it into the barr summary. Sar ha westwood, thank you so much. With that, lets say good morning to shane woo. To you, attorney general bar had to know that within hours of his News Conference on thursday that the omissions would be analyzed and the spin would be obvious. A few days out now from the immediate release, do you see a strategy beyond the initial reaction to thrks is to an audience of one. Is there a greater strategy here . The only greater strategy is thatt to barr to reach out, unnecessarily, i might add, to decide the obstruction issue. Mueller clearly left that open, very clear why he left it open. He said the office of Council Policy was a factor for him. In addition to that, he points out, this is something that congress can exercise its discretion over. He does a very beautiful job on page 159, really dissecting and analyzing all the arguments why trumps people argue you cannot bring obstruction against the president of the United States and he disposes of the arguments. He clears the stage foco tor the president leaves office, he can be indicted and they have preserved the record to make it a possibility. Theres criticism on this nothing further and others of ag barrs statements during the News Conference, his letters. I want to examine his truthfulness under oath when he was before Congress Last week. Let me read from the Mueller Report, first. Volume two, page 8, which mueller writes, with respect to whether the president is found to obstruct justice under article 2, congress has the authority to prohibit a president s corrupt use of authority in order to protect administration of justice. It accords with the constitutional system that no person is above the law. Watch this exchange between ag barr and senator leahy. This was april 10. The attorney general had the report for two and a half weeks by the time he answered this question. Watch. Any expectation or interest in leaving the obstruction decision to congress . Not that he didnt say that to me. No. How does that qualify as a truthful answer . That was a long pause as he parsed through words there. I think if i were his lawyer, i would say, barr was, quote, saying quote, not that he said to me, meaning not in the private conversation we had. We clearly said that in the report. Thats part of the pause. Barr is trying to make sure he doesnt commit perjury. He didnt say that to me. I think thats very misleading. Its very, very troubling in this pattern of barr misleading the public. I mean, he took an oath to serve the people, to serve the constitution. The president appoints him to serve the constitution. He serves at the pleasure of the president not to pleasure the president. So, let me ask you about the subpoena thats been issued now. Jerry nadler for the full report, unredacted and the underlying evidence there. Does the spin from the ag and omissions to get the full report . I think it does. Perhaps it doesnt play into it in terms of legally does it make it a stronger case or not, but it certainly provides a strong impetus for congress to want to see the rest of it, particularly the underlying details. They dont trust barr anymore. Traditionally congress engaged in negotiation over how much will be revealed. If that goes as it usually does, you are not going to end up with all pages of it. I think the fact that barr mislead them and the public means they dont have any choice but to do their job. They have to possible. A spokesperson responded to the subpoena, calling it premature and unnecessary. Does approving the subpoena before getting the unredacted or getting the redacted report and then issuing the subpoena before getting this redacted report undermine the argument that nadler and democrats, at large, are trying to make about getting the full report . I dont think so. Because, when they approve the subpoena, once the issue the subpoena, it can be negotiated. That happens all the time, not just with congressional. When you get a subpoena in the civil case, you receive it and reach out to the other side to negotiate over the scope of it, can the documents be delivered without a witness appearing. Thats a normal thing. It undercuts the legal strength whether or not they can get the documents. Shan wu, good to have you. A concert here in paris tonight under a very tight security given the context and, of course, Easter Weekend Services continue tomorrow here in paris, not at notre dame, which remains shut. Investigators are still trying to sift through the evidence. The main lead is the idea this fire that broke out on monday might have been an electrical spark. The cathedral was under restoration. Maybe some of the equipment, the elevators put in, there may have been electrical short circuit. We have been speaking to a Police Source who tells cnn, they are looking into the problem of the fire detectors. At 6 20, there was a first alarm, the building was evacuated, but no fire detected. 23 minutes later, another alarm went off, the fire was spotted and the fire brigades came in for an incredibly complex situation. Were the sensors working or not working properly. By the time the second alarm went off and they were able to get up and do the inspection, the flames were three meters high. Difficult to put out. The investigation is moving on fast, speaking to dozens of people, collecting amateur footage. A camera was put in place on the day of the fire was put in the hands of investigators.
