A must of school yard taunt and real political urge season. Off color. Nobody has ever commented on my hands. He referred to my hands if that is something, Something Else must be small. I guarantee you there is no problem. I guarantee it. Lets see the answers. Dont worry about it, little marco. In mere minutes, it turned into a personal affair and stayed that way all night. Count to 10, donald. Count to 10. Three candidates desperate to stop one, donald trump. Florida senator marco rubio on full attack trying to stay alive with a win in his home state of florida. And hes asking us to make him the president of the United States of america. This is not a reporter texas senator cruz in a one on one fight with trump. If you went to manhattan and said im lying to the American People no. Youre the lying guy up here. Youre the one. Youre the one i have given my answer, lying ted. Continuing to believe his lower volume pitch will get him through his own march contest in his home state. Three times. Ten times. In 2008 he wrote four checks to elect Hillary Clinton as president. His Business Practices. Ever heard of trump stakes. You know what, you know what, take a look at trump stakes. He has spent a career convincing americans something hes not in exchange for their money. Now he is trying to do it with the country. Stkpwhrr in two Interviews Trump appeared to flipflop. Do you believe american boots should stay on the ground in afghanistan to stabilize the situation. We made a terrible mistake getting in there just in the first place. About afghanistan, you said we made a terrible mistake. Our question was about afghanistan. Okay. I never said that. How is any of this telling it like it is . In afghanistan, i went iraq. I corrected it the second day. Cnn just came out with a poll. Excuse me, a National Poll, a National Poll where hes at 15, hes at 14. And im at 49. Are you at 15 in the new cnn poll . Do you believe in cnn . I watched a cnn interview donald did. This network being brought up a dozen times. The clock is ticking for trumps competitors, to stop him before he moves to the next battle. I beat Hillary Clinton in many polls. I beat her in a recent fox poll. I beat Hillary Clinton in usa today. I beat her in a poll today in ohio. Im the only one that beats Hillary Clinton. And i have not started on hillary yet. Believe me, i will start too. I havent even started it. If you pitched it as a screen play, it would get laughed out of anybodys office. If you did it at school, you would go to the principals office. If you did it where i grew up, you would get knocked unconscious. It is being passed at political dialogue. David gregory, mark preston and sara murray. Mark preston, i start with you. We had heard this was linked to a new strategy. What did you see last night . I think if you are a republican and youre watching that stage, you are looking at john kasich and saying, wow, this is the only grownup here. For someone who has not had great debate performance as of late, this is said about ted cruz. I think cruz was fair live effecti effective. I have no problem. Hes relishing. I would never you could have bet me anything you wanted that nobody would ever talk about this in a president ial race and i would be paying out the rest of my life. Do you realize youre probably the first person in American History to make a joke about your you know what. I only made a joke about my hands. Arent they beautiful . I have powerful hands and relatively large hands. And a politician said i didnt have large hands. Its the first time anyone has ever south side that one. I think it was a good moment. Mrs. Trump, what did you think of that moment . It was a great moment. Okay. No, it was fine. He was attacked. And marco rubio attacked him, and he responded. Who wants to take this one . Dana bash having the moxie to put the mike to mr. Trump after that. Sara murray, you take it. Go ahead. Sayre is ra, what did you think of that moment . Wow, im so lucky to get this one. As soon as i was watching this play out, i just felt like do these guys even want to win voters in a general election . Im watching this play out on stage and i cant believe this is what it has come down to. A lot of people are sitting at home thinking the same thing. Sure, it may have been light hearted and funny, but the idea they are running to be the next leader of the free world. And they are talking about their hand size and maybe the size of Something Else struck me as very beneath the level of discourse we want to be at, particularly at this point in a race. And i cant imagine i was alone in that feeling. David, switching topics. Some pundits are calling this cnns debate. It was referenced a dozen times. They used a clip from new day. Big night for new day. Big night for the morning of new day. Let me play for you this clip pointing out trumps inconsistencies. Mr. Trump, one of the things people love about you is they believe you tell it like it is. But time and time again in this campaign, you actually told the voters one thing only to reverse yourself within weeks and sometimes even days. The first is whether the war in afghanistan. Do you believe american boots stay on the ground to stabilize the situation . We made a terrible mistake getting involved in the first place. That place will collapse two seconds after they leave. Just as i said iraq was going to collapse. About afghanistan, you had we made a terrible mistake getting involved in the first place. We made a mistake going into iraq. Our question was about afghanistan. Okay. I never said that. Wouldnt matter. I never said it. And there are many other examples. How is any of this telling it like it is . In i meant iraq. With afghanistan, we have to stay a while because it is next to pakistan and we have to protect afghanistan. Last night was an important moment of accelerating that case. It was basic saying, and you heard it from rubio effectively. You heard it even more effectively from ted cruz, the guy who tells it like it is just telling you what you want to hear. He shoots from the hip and doesnt think before he talks. That can be something dangerous as a president. You cant trust what youre getting is the real thing. Whether its a businessman or someone who starts Trump University that he is a fraud. You just cant belive it. At a time when so many supporters want authenticity have either of his primary rivals have undermined his authenticity. Divide and conquer. Everybody has a role to play. Theyre not trying to beat trump. They are trying to stop him at this point. Or divide and survive. Which we will talk about after the break. Preston, i dont know what your take is. But i felt the reason they were using cnn is the fact that they dont have more of their own clips. Its who they didnt show last night. This was somewhat of a reflection who had given trump a pass. Now we have reached this moment. In many ways, chris, what is interesting about what happened last night, if you are a republican voter or someone who is focusing on this race right now, you have to be thinking to yourself, what is happening to. Davids point about the idea of surviving and everybody trying to get a little piece of this, we heard mitt romney say yesterday in his speech, lets have john kasich go to ohio and win ohio and his 66 delegates. And marco rubio go to florida and win his 99 delegates. That is to deny donald trump to get to 1,237 in june. Lets take a break. Then we will come back and take a look at why we were seeing this last night. Was it just madness . Actually, no. Theres a method to that. We will have one of the main players. We will have senator marco rubio. Certainly a lot of light on him last night. And we will talk about why this is the new strategy. On the democratic side, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are making their lastminute push. Cancan Bernie Sanders make up much needed ground. Good morning, michaela. All eyes on michigan. A whole slew of states, mississippi, florida, illinois, ohio, north carolina, kansas, louisiana, they will all be voting over the next two weeks. Sit michigan that holds its primary next week. It is front and center because of the debate. The flint water crisis caused both candidates to make the citys predicament part of their stump speeches. They have already visited that city. And the debate will show how they handle the issue. Big picture, its crunch time for Bernie Sanders as he cherry picks for votes in states he hopes he can pick up a few delegates. Lets listen. We started off at 3 in the polls. 60, 70 points behind second clinton. On tuesday, we won major victories. Not by a little bit. I think and of all of you and your friends and coworkers come out saturday, we will have a pretty good victory here in kansas. Hillary clinton, for her part, spent last night listening to the republican candidates and their speeches, mocking them at times on social media. She is going to be traveling in michigan today in detroit, giving a speech about jobs. And Bernie Sanders is going to be in illinois, then wrapping up in western michigan. Busy schedule for him. Thanks so much, joe. Were calling it march madness on cnn next week. Super saturday coverage. Sunday the next democratic debate in flint, michigan, followed by race to the white house. And next tuesday is super tuesday. Wednesday, a debate in miami. And thursday a gop debate in miami. Im going to start resting up right now. You should. Ted cruz and marco rubio unleashing on donald trump. Will it work to slow trumps momentum . Thats next. They speak louder. We like that. Not just because were doers. Because were changing. Big things. Small things. Spur of the moment things. Changes youll notice. Wherever you are in the world. Sheraton. Every Auto Insurance policy has a number. But not every Insurance Company understands the life behind it. Those who have served our nation have earned the very best service in return. Usaa. We know what it means to serve. Get an Auto Insurance quote and see why 92 of our members plan to stay for life. Being hacked and intellectual property being stolen. That is cybercrime and it affects each and every one of us. Microsoft created the digital crimes unit to fight cybercrime. We use the microsoft cloud to visualize information so we can track down the criminals. When it comes to the cloud, trust and security are paramount. Were building what we learn back into the cloud to make people and organizations safer. He was a failed candidate. He should have beaten president obama very easily. He failed miserably. It an embarrassment to everybody, including the Republican Party. I guess he wants to be relevant. He wants to be back in the game. That was donald trump going after 2012 nominee mitt romney. By the end of the debate, all the candidates agreed to support the eventual nominee. How is that going to work . Lets welcome in Time Warner Cable news errol lewis. Errol, let me start with you. The hours leading up to last nights debate. In the morning, mitt romney appears at university of utah and talks about trump else unfitness for office basically. John mccain followed up and said, i would also echo the many concerns about mr. Trumps uninformed and indeed dangerous statements on National Security issues. I want republican vote stories think long and hard about who they want to be our next commander in chief and leader of the free world. All of that. The establishment is coalescing, it seems, to point out some of their misgivings. How is all of that playing . We will see how it plays out. It is extraordinary actually. To read the transcript of mott romneys speech, it is well argued, concise, touches on all Different Things. His temperament, demeanor, obscenities, the violence. Playing footsie with racists. To your midlevel party leadership. Volunteer county chairs, people who influence others to say, look, think long and hard. And hes saying im not going to do it. John mccain said if you believed in me in 2008, im not going in in direction. It will be up to the voters. Also, again, that important middle strata to guide is this the way we want to go. Two interesting points. As soon as alisyn says the word establish werement, it mitigates those people with donald Trump Supporters. 70 say theyre not changing their mind on donald trump no matter what others think. It it it is an unfolding strategy. No doubt. Errol is right. What mitt romney did yes, maam was emboldened. They didnt think he was Strong Enough in 2012, neuer was he smart enough when he was taking on barack obama when it comes to the strategy of winning. What mitt romney was doing yesterday and what we havent seen done up to this point is to have some kind of unifying voice to make the case against trump that didnt have a stake in the game, meaning marco rubio, ted cruz or john kasich or any others that had been running up to this point. Does mitt romney want to get back in the game. It all depend on those you talk to in his inner circle. But this is how it will play out the next few months. My 10yearold son would say, this just got real. The idea that the establishment is some group of moderate swishes is not accurate. There is a conservative core to the gop establishment, even though they may be in some disfavor. This is about the tonage of trump and exposing his vulnerabilities. Donald trump signaled that he will negotiate on this whole business of deporting 11 million Illegal Immigrants in the United States. Thats a big deal. That is either flexibility or he has no true north. And he would order torture even if it is considered illegal. I think part of this divide and conquer is to say at all Different Levels within the Republican Party, this is someone who should be disqualified. That said, i think it is striking. Its a question for senator rubio. The extent to which they are saying he should not be considered, that he could destroy the party, they will say, well, when hes nominee, we will still support. Disqualify has been a buzz word. You hear it from party leadership. Certainly theres something afoot. Anybody who is making phone calls is hearing the same thing. This isnt divide and conquer. It is divide and convention. How will this work this idea of even car son being asked to stay in the race. What is the theory now about we need everybody . Sure. The theory is roughly 1,200 votes are needed to become the nominee. Delegates are bound to vote is once for who they were sent to the convention to support. That leaves outliers. They go and cast their first vote. After that, anything can happen. And so the notion of deny, deny, deny, to try to keep donald Trump Delegates from having a firm majority. Under 1,237. Get in the convention. Then what. Thats what we talk about with a brokered convention. Come with this guy, come with that guy. It will look different with several more debates and a bunch of other strategy that will be playing out and election returns from the primary states. We have seen in the last 30 days, 10 million in ads spent against trump. That moves the needle. You dont know whats going to happen. There is talk of a unity ticket between rubio and cruz. There is a reason mitt romney has decided not to endorse. They need to hold back to play a role in negotiating some kind of outcome if this strategy can be pulled off. David, mark, errol, thank you so much. We do need to save time. We are talking with one of the republican candidates. Marco rubio will be here this hour. We look forward to that. Rivals ramping up their heated attacks. Mostly against trump buff the frontrunner took a little as well. I want to talk about where you are. What was glossed over last night was flint, michigan and the situation there right now. What can you tell us about what is being done to help those people, many of whom living in the same desperate need they were a month ago. Well, im glad to see everybody come to michigan. Im one of the people who thinks we shouldnt be a little bit sizing this. We had to do three things when i learned about this. Find out what the people of flint need to get them safe. Safe drinking water, clean filters. Now you are listening to reports of 80 or 90 fabulous medical people in clinton. 99 of the water in the homes now appears to be safe. The next thing we have to do is what it is going to take to fix the pipes, and also make sure that the children that have been damaged by the lead water, what are the resources that will be needed from replacing the start, wic programs, educational programs. We need to hold people accountable and make sure this never happens in another country, in america again. There are a lot of needs on the table again. One of them is trust. That will be the lubricant to make the parts move smoothly. People do not believe 99 of the water is okay. They are still living out of bottles and worry about the longrange effects on their kids already past the point of helping. Chris, you know, ive been up there every week now for a couple of months. Government at every level failed the people of flint. What you just talked about is the biggest problem. It is trust. They trust nobody. So as things are getting fixed, they dont know who they can trust. They dont even know if their water is safe to bathe in or not. A governor who says it is and an attorney general who is running for governor who said it is isnt. A team from cdc is studying the water. I was not told definitively until my trip two weeks ago, lead does not cause rashes. Yet there is a serious concern in flint about rashes. There is a lot of stress, misinformation. We have to make sure. We have credible people that they ultimately trust. The doctor is one of them. And restore that trust to the people. Look, its no coincidence that the cnn debate is in flint, michigan, not elsewhere in that state. I promise you it will not be glossed over at all. It is a great test of leadership and failure. Let me ask you something about last nights debate. We know your caucus is meeting in michigan. We will look for the reporting on that. The woman youre endorsing took a big blow. Did she lie to the families of the benghazi victims by going with alternate theories of how it happened, from terrorism to an unplanned event . It will turn in to trump talking points through the november election. The faster we get these issues dealt with, the faster we get the emails issues dealt with, the New York Times said they would try to expeditiously bring this to closure. It may be moving to finally getting that done. I believe that this is going to be something republicans are going to constantly try to fan because theyre trying to build a sense of distrust. I know Hillary Clinton. I know how effective she is. She would never deliberately lie to anybody. She is somebody who is seasoned. What has happened on the emails is something that happened to colin powell and condoleezza rice. Lets get the facts out there, get the investigation closed. And then lets talk about the issues we all care about in the next president of the United States. The situation in flint, michigan will not be unknown certainly at cnn. Thank you for being with us. We will talk about this again in the days ahead. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders are going to square off in their next debate sunday night in flint, michigan. Anderson cooper will moderate, sunday night, 8 00 eastern only on cnn. Alisyn. Chris, up next, marco rubio live on new day. Going toe to toe with donald trump last night. Well ask how he plans to overtake the frontrunner. With the. Fastest retinol formula. To visibly reduce wrinkles. Neutrogena®. Then your eyes may see it, differently. Ave allergies. So your business can get back to business. Sounds like my rides ready. Dont get stuck on hold. Reach an expert fast. Comcast business. Built for business. I have a policy question for you, sir. Lets see the answer. Dont worry about it, marco. Dont worry about it, little marco. Lets hear it, big donald. That was just one moment of senator marco rubio and donald trump sparring. Lets talk about it with senator marco rubio. Good morning, senator. Good morning, alisyn. So pundits have a lot of different descriptions about last night. Some are calling rowdy. Some raucous. Some say at times raunchy. How do you describe what happened last night . Well, i think its par for the course in this very unusual election. Look, i go into the debates and i hope every question is a policy question. It hasnt been that way because perhaps donald trump has been no, not perhaps. He has been the most vulgar. Im not complaining. It is what it is what we get asked. But the majority of the questions are he said or she said i would love to have a policy debate. Were talking about the president of the United States here. Donald trump did not give a policy answer. He retorted to attacking me personally. Voters deserve better what they are getting all of these debates. Of course you have taken a page out of Donald Trumps playbook. You talked about his little hands. And last night that came up. He talked about his endowment. And i dont mean to his alma mater. So let me play that moment for you. He is really not that much of a lightweight. And as far as and i have to say this, i have to say this, he hit my hands. Nobody has ever hit my hands. Ive never heard of this one. Look at those hands. Are they small hands . And he referred to my hands. If theyre small, Something Else must be small. I guarantee you, there is no problem. I guarantee you. Senator, what was going through your head at that moment . Nothing surprises us anymore. This man, as i told you, he has injected a level of vulgarity into the political discourse we have never seen. I said something first of all, i didnt say what he was saying. He has personally attacked the disabled journalist. Sometimes in the most vulgar ways. Thats not what i want my campaign to be about. Im out there every day talking about the future of america, outlining real plans. By the way, an optimistic vision of the future. My campaign is not doom and gloom. It is how things could be better if we do a certain set of things. Thats what i want the Republican Party to be out, the conservative movement to be about. Im asking everyone to join our efforts at marcorubio. Com so we can put a stop to this ridiculous to rally the party and offer an alternative to the American People. Yet, senator, at the end of the night, you reiterated a pledge to the gop nominee whoever that is. This man donald trump, who you have called con artist, bad for American Workers, among other things, how could you support him . And thats the quandary we find ourselves in. The alternative is Hillary Clinton, who i believe is completely unqualified and would be bad for the country. Thats the quandary im trying to avoid the Republican Party having to face. I dont want us to have a nominee that people have to make up an excuse how they are voting for. If donald trump is the republican nominee, we are going to have a party thats divided, a party that has to somehow justify to itself why it is voting for this man. It is hard to win app election with a nominee like that. The fact that people even ask that question is indicative of how bad a nominee he is. I am going to be the nominee. It is a tough road. I am an underdog. I have to fight hard like i have my whole life to be successful. If people have to make that awful choice, hold your nose and vote for someone because you cant vote for Hillary Clinton, then rally around our campaign. Go to marcorubio. Com and join our efforts. Senator, lets talk about the road ahead for you and how you see it playing out. More and more analysts are saying the possibility of a brokered convention is real. I know that youre putting a lot of stock and energy into your home state of florida. So lets say you win florida. Lets say john kasich wins ohio. He is putting a lot of energy. Ted cruz has already won three or four states. Donald trump has won more than a handful. Are you planning on a brokered convention . Is that the scenario . No. I dont think that needs to be the scenario. It is where someone on the ballot doesnt even get pushed in. It is possible that no single candidate has 1,237 delegates, which is what you need to be the nominee. His road to that number is hard. Ted cruz is hard. Mine is hard. We will see how this plays out. It has been a very unusual election. We will continue to work hard. Our goal is to be the nominee outright. What is the path . Explain the math to us, senator. What is the path to that for you to be the nominee, if not for a brokered convention . Well, our path obviously is to go into the convention with the most number of delegates of anybody on the ballot. We have a path to doing that. It may take all 50 states to get to that point. I hope that will be 1,237. It wont be easy, but it wont be easy for anyone at this point. Other people have done the numbers on this. Im not the political analyst. Not even donald trump has a clear path to 1,237. It is important for us to realize beyond florida, what state are you banking on . You know, i think you can ask that of anyone in this race. We are going to compete everywhere we can. We have a national campaign. Were competing in hawaii, idaho, kansas, florida, louisiana. We are working everywhere in a multilevel were not a regionalized campaign. We havent put all our eggs in one basket. Ted cruz did that. I ended up beating him in virginia, georgia, beating him across the south in a different places on super tuesday. We are not a campaign that ever said here is where were going to wrap it up. This is the most unusual primary in my lifetime. Thats what we will continue towards working on, ensuring we are the nominee. Senator marco rubio, we appreciate you taking the time to be on new day. Great to talk to you. Yeah. Great to talk to you. Michaela. We have been talking about the debate that did on not air on on cnn. At times it felt like it had, though. Take a listen to this. Cnn. Cnn. Cnn. Do you believe in cnn . See what im talking about . Well take a closer look and some of the more moments as donald trump faced may began kelly again. Hi im kristie. And im jess. And we are the bug chicks. Were a nanobusiness. Windows 10 really helps us get the word out about how awesome bugs are. Kids learn to be brave and curious and all kids speak the language of bug. Hey cortana, find my katydid video. Oh this is so good. If youre trying to teach a kid about a proboscis. Just sketch it on the screen. I dont have a touch screen on my mac, im jealous of that. You put a big bug in a kids hands and change their world view. [ laugh ] hi im kristie. [ laugh ] cnn just came out with a poll. I watched a cnn interview. Cnn. He gets 15. He told us to look to the cnn poll. Cnn just came out. Do you believe in cnn . Wasnt that a great cnn debate last night . Gop debate aired on a different network, rival network. We heard our name come up so often we were doing double takes. It was a rematch between donald trump and megyn kelly. It was so fascinating to hear i think for all of us. I had to do a double take a couple times, brian. Wait, which channel did i turn to. I think it was good to see. What fox was trying to do is show all the cnn clips here on new day was to show Fact Checking. There are two kinds of people in the world, those who care about Fact Checking and those who dont. Thats what these programs have done. Thats what enter is viewers have done. They were shown last night. I was glad fox brought them back up. Megyn kelly and other moderators were doing the same thing, trying to challenge the candidates. I think viewers want more and not less. I think this is selfindulgent. Absolutely. Heres what i took from it. It is no coincidence. Because we test donald trump more than others. We would never show clips of any other morning show unless we actually had to. Donald trump not being on this show almost two months now is the price you pay when you go after somebody who doesnt want to go after and finds safe harbors elsewhere. Of course. This crossover is national. Using clips in the debate is a good technique now. I think we will have more of that. Kelly is and trump got along. They were pressing for substance, pressing for policy. The candidates werent always bringing it that way. There is something notable in this polarized immediate kra age where everybody has their side. Cnn is the middle of the road network where everybody comes. I think thats what we saw last night, showing the clips on of trump on new day. Donald trump just so our viewers know, we extend an invitation every day. For eight weeks now all of them. Absolutely. Most accept our invitation. For eight weeks he has not want to come on. He hasnt liked some of our questions. Its interesting when president ial candidates can pick and choose what journalism they want to talk to. He was standing up for the first amendment, he said, which was odd. Why is it even an issue . He says they should honor the arrangement to be off the record. Shouldnt they . The New York Times should. Donald trump can let it go if he wants to. Most viewers dont understand that concept of off the record. They dont know what it is. Its not really being explained. It puts trump in a bad position. He said i agreed to something off the record. What that means is we dont use it no matter what happens, unless he frees it up. The times position, they cant go forward. We all know that. Well, listen, i was going to ask about the fact that were going to wrap it here. But the one last thing i want to say this was definitely a debate you werent necessarily say, kids, lets gather around the tv and watch it together, the political process. Some families said earmuffs. Im happy not to talk about it. Well talk with a member of trumps campaign. So lets get to it. Mom nating donald would be a disaster. The real con artist is. Secretary clinton and i have different points of view. I will stand up and fight for you know matter who the republicans nominate. Were telling the truth. This is new day with chris cuomo, Alisyn Camerota and michaela pereira. The republican race getting stranger. The gop debate looking more like a frat house food fight. Marco rubio and ted cruz exchanges insults and personal attacks with donald trump. Even bragged about the size of his moonhood. The candidates stopped fighting long enough to agree on on one thing. They were all calling each other the worst people to ever run. They each vowed to support the nominee. What do you hear . What do you believe . Lets talk with Phil Mattingly in the motor city. Reporter a remarkable day in the history of the Republican Party. Finishing with a raucous and unwieldy. Theres serious urgency fort three candidates not named donald trump. Off color. He hit my hands. Nobody has ever hit my hands. Look at those hands . Are they small hands . And he referred to my hands, if theyre small, Something Else must be small. I guarantee you theres no problem. I guarantee. Then off the rails. Okay. Hold on, hold on, hold on. Reporter three candidates desperate to stop one. Marco rubio trying to stay alive in his home is state of florida. Hes asking us to make him the president of the United States. This is not a game. Reporter texas senator ted cruz pushing for a one on one matchup with donald trump. If in fact, you went to manhattan and said im lying to the American People, then the voters have a right to know. Youre the liar. Youre the lying guy up here. Youre the one. Excuse me. I have given my answer, lying ted. John kasich continuing to be his lower vying is pitch will get him through his own mustwin contest in his home state. I have never tried to go to get into these scrums we see here on the stage. Reporter time running out. Targeting his political donations and donald trump has written checks to Hillary Clinton not once, not twice, but 10 times. He wrote four checks to elect Hillary Clinton as president. Ever heard of trump stakes . You know what, take a look the a trump stakes. Reporter even his character. He spent a year of convincing americans of something he is not in exchange for their money. Now he is trying to do the same, exchange for their country. Reporter everyone from candidates to moderators trying to pin trump town, citing two interviews on cnns new day where trump appeared to flipflop. Do you believe american boots should is stay to the ground to stabilize the situation . That thing many collapse two seconds after they leave. Just as i said iraq was going to collapse afterwards. About afghanistan, you said we made a terrible mistake getting involved there in the first place. We made a mistake going into iraq. Our question was about afghanistan. That day okay. How is any of this telling it like it is . In afghanistan, i did mean iraq. I corrected it the second day. In fact, cnns reporting was prevale prevalent. Cnn came out with National Poll. Hes at 14, hes at 15. Im at 49. I watched a cnn interview donald did of this being brought up a dozen times. The clock is ticking for trumps competitors, to stop him before he moves on to the next battle. I beating Hillary Clinton in a recent fox poll. I have beat her in usa today. I beat her in a poll in ohio. Im the only one that beats Hillary Clinton. And i have not started on Hillary Clinton yet. Believe me i will start. Dana bash caught up with trump of the debate and got his take on the night. What did you think of the debate . I thought it was great. I thought it was very fair. I thought it would be tougher. I thought it would be more violent is. But it was good. More violent than it was . I think it was tough. I thought it was going to be worse. I cant believe im going to ask you this question. Do you realize youre probably probably the First American in history to talk about your you know what. I was only talking about my hands. The politician said i didnt have large hands. The first time somebody said that. I think it was a good movement. Mrs. Trump, what did you think of that moment . It was a great moment, okay. No, it was fine. He was attacked. Marco rubio attacked him, and he responded. What was going through your mind when ted cruz said more than once you should breathe. Did he say that . I really dont know. I dont think ted had a very good night. And i think we did have a very good night. Mr. Trump, can i ask you one more question about mitt romney. What about the concept of him saying people should vote for anybody but you. Failed candidate. He failed horribly. Its an election he should have won. He choked. Pure and simple. When a person chokes, once they choke, they always choke. Marco choked. When Chris Christie was grilling him, it was a total joke. When mitt romney got i dont know what happened. He got the nomination and choked like a dog. He knows i know that. I had it to him loud and clear. I was very unhappy. I spent a lot of time and money on him and effort. He went away for the month prior. He wasnt anywhere. Nobody could find him. Do you feel confident there is a contested convention, you will be the victor . I will have the most delegates by far. I already do. I think i will have a very good saturday. We will have is a good tuesday. I certainly had the best super tuesday before. And i think you would even admit that, right . Joining us now is sam clovis, cochairman and policy adviser for the trump campaign. Good morning, sam. How are you, alisyn . Im doing well. So what a debate last night. Analysts are calling it all sorts of different if you want to call it that. How to you describe it . Well, i dont know. Its sad when we get into is that activity up there. I think it cheats the American People. The didnt move the needle for anybody. We are still way out in front. This is what happens. When you have the 12th debate or whatever number it is. Theres only so many ways you can ask gotcha questions. Only so many ways you can confront people up there. Its tiresome. You are making it sound as though the moderators made it to degenerate. Donald trump was the person who talked about the size of his hands. Let me play that moment for you. Hes really not that much of a lightweight. Sam, thats your candidate. He went there. It was the start of an issue. I thought it was a light moment for me. I thought it was funny. It was probably at that point in time the right way to go with that. It just puts it on the table and say if we are going to talk about this on the campaign trail, lets get it out on the stage and talk about it. It was over and they moved in. What i have talked with you about and other commentators about, i dont think that the donor class, the media class, or anybody else, i dont think theyre getting whats going on in this country or theyre in utter denial of it. I think last night or yesterday when we watched mitt romney, he saw a classic case of that. They are no total denial of whats going on in this country. 30 years the establishment of either party has failed the person people. And the American People are upset about it. We have a guy who shows leadership and people are flocking to him. We have record turnout in every state so far. Record turnout. Now, that doesnt happen by accident. So this is all because we have a person who shows leadership skills and who is tapping in to whats going on in this country like no one else has in a long, long time. I Vice President seen anything like this since ronald reagan. We have heard from Trump Supporters they do feel betrayed and shunted by the gop establishment. That is part of his appeal. The establishment seems to be coalescing to point out to voters that donald trump has some inconsistencies at best in his positions. And this came up last night. The moderators tried to point this out. Go ahead. Let me hear you. Do you think for a minute that Trump Supporters are going to listen to people who lied to them. As he has grown older, he has grown and gotten more solid in his position. Do you think this will change anything. This is why he appeals to so many people. There was a moment where the moderators pointed out donald trump seems to have shifted positions on afghanistan and what to do about afghanistan. Let me play this moment based on a new day interview. Do you believe american boots should stay on the ground in stabilize the situation . We made a terrible mistake getting involved in the first place. That will collapse two seconds after they leave. Just as i said iraq was going to collapse. We made a mistake going into iraq. Our question was about afghanistan. Okay. I never said that. On okay. Couldnt matter. I never said it. And there are many other examples. How is any of this telling it like it is. In afghanistan, i did mean iraq. You say shifting positions is human. People are allowed to change. Dont voters deserve to hear where their candidate really feels about health care, about the war . I think they have. American voters are not aware of any of this. We had a Record Number of people turn out. You think they dont know or dont care . I cant believe this. What we are seeing are the American Voters are stupid. I dont think thats what you intend because we know you better than that. Thats the way the message comes across. Were not smart enough. We cant figure this out for ourselves. Yeah, im glad somebody came along and told me how dumb i was for supporting donald trump. Is that the prejudice we want here . I think thats the message that comes across when we start to hear all these people chattering about this. Despite fluctuating positions, voters still like donald trump pause they believe he is a leader. Hes the only one not taking money from people that christ died for. They found a champion in donald trump. They have asked in 2010 to have the house put back in the hands of the republicans. What happened . Mitt romney lost miserably. Effectiveness of congress in general. Why . The American People told them over and over what we want done. Yet nothing happens. All of these politicians are on the stage saying, yeah, well fix it. Why havent you . You have had 30 years. Why havent you fixed it . We would like to Ask Donald Trump some of these questions. Donald trump hasnt been on cnn for eight weeks. Please give him the invitation to come on any time. I will. Tomorrow, tune in for Super Saturday coverage anchored by chris. And the premier of the race to the white house. Next tuesday is the next super tuesday night. Wednesday brings another democratic debate in miami. Thursday, a Republican Debate in miami. We have a full week of political events right here on cnn. Chris . You cant say youre not getting enough chances to look at the candidates and make a choice. The question is what are they doing . Personal attacks and insults certainly hit new lows in last nights gop debate in quotes. How is that going to play in a general election . This the start of the Party Breaking up on the gop side. In one week. With the. Fastest retinol formula. To visibly reduce wrinkles. Neutrogena®. At ally bank, no branches equals great rates. Its a fact. Kind of like grandkids equals free tech support. Oh, look at you, so great to see you none of this works. Come on in. All right. Couldnt let your kids watch it. Not even my soontobe teenager. She actually walked away from it. It was certainly showing you which way this campaign is headed. Donald trump is certainly at the top. Last night he went of the top in terms of what he said defending his own manhood. He was a pinata for rubio and cruz last night. This ugliness is a means to an end. Lets discuss what that means. Cnn political analyst and Campaign Correspondent for no less than the New York Times, maggie haberman. General headlines . I dont know where to begin. There is one about a major president ial candidate talking about his genitals on stage last night. He had it of about his hands. He volunteered it. It wasnt even though this was asked of him. The crowd went wild. No question about that. You had rubio and cruz tagteaming against them. If they were not coordinating, it should looked like it. At the end of the day all i could think is mitt romney if republicans were trying to stop trump, mitt romney did a much more effective one several hours earlier. It was clear and concise. This was kitchen cinque. This was everybody throwing Different Things across the stage at trump. The candidates, moderators. Im not sure how much people took about it. Some vague references to Trump University. The back drop leading up to this was incredible. All day the high drama leading up to it. You heard from mitt romney, john mccain. Establishment campaigns were coming out with a bull horn saying you need to see what this man is promising. Donald trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. He is playing the members of the American Public for suckers. He gets a free ride to the white house. All we get is a lousy hat. Maggie, good line. None of trumps supporters dont care what romney says. They are voting against the establishment, false promises. I think sam said Something Interesting before which is true. It sounds like youre criticizing trump or Trump Supporters and what people are upset about. That has been a problem for the party. I think what mitt romney did is different. Its not the same thing. Mitt romney is a former Party Nominee who gave a major speech and basically stood there. Did not address the fact that he endorsed in 2012. Something that romney could have addressed and probably should have. You know why he didnt address it. One word, loser. Thats what he is. He is discounted. 75 plus percent of people say they will not change their mind. Yes. You are not going to drain all his supporters. Thats a fact. No. So whats going on here . Hostile takeover by trump. Were headed to a convention. Now, what are those dynamics in play . Thats the story. No question. The dissolution of the party is the big headline. Thats why what romney did is so significant. They are trying to burn down the village in order to save it. You look at where trumps support in. I know he is approaching 50 in National Polls. In the contest hes been in, with the pension of massachusetts where he did incredibly well. In some of the states where ads were run against him, he didnt win. Thats where the antitrumps are casting hopes, to keep him below a certain number and keep it going to the convention. An rnc guy said we are going full chemo. Then we will cut off the limb. That is a graphic example. This came from rick perreys senior director, jamie johnson. My party is committing suicide on national television. Do these terms of chemo, amputation and suicide get any more spark on how the party feels about this . No. On the other hand, this is what was amazing. Ted cruz was a skilled debater. He showed that last night. He stayed calm. He was condescending to trump in a way that people normally are not. All you can think is, again, what took you so long. If people have been trying to do this, people are now saying he must be stopped, he must be stopped now that he has won 10 states. There is ape reason that you usually do this early. Right. The personal disqualifying attacks do come early. Cuomo shouldnt be in this race. She said that before. Theres a lot of merit to that. But here theyre not doing what they need to do to make any progress in this. Theyre not offering anything better than trump. Thats right. They are saying trump sucks. Thats the case right now. I want this. There is no affirmative case that anybody is making. A cruz person just took issue with me on twitter. Kasich did make an affirmative case. It is not based on answering some of the questions put to him. But it is is a positive message delivered with a smile. That is not what you are seeing with rubio and cruz at all. Maggie, thanks very much e for being here. Marco rubio on the attack against donald trump but said he would support trump if he becomes the nominee. What is the strategy to keep that from becoming necessary . We will talk with one of his advisers, next. Good. How was your commute . Yours . Good. So when my asthma symptoms kept coming back on my longterm control medicine, i talked to my doctor and found a missing piece in my asthma treatment. Oncedaily breo prevents asthma symptoms. Breo is for adults with asthma not well controlled on a longterm asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. Breo wont replace a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. Breo opens up airways to help improve breathing for a full 24 hours. Breo contains a type of medicine that increases the risk of death from asthma problems and may increase the risk of hospitalization in children and adolescents. Breo is not for people whose asthma is well controlled on a longterm asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. Once your asthma is well controlled, your doctor will decide if you can stop breo and prescribe a different asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. Do not take breo more than prescribed. See your doctor if your asthma does not improve or gets worse. Ask your doctor if 24hour breo could be a missing piece for you. If donald trump is the republican nominee, we will have a party that is divided is and somehow has to justify to itself why it is voting for this man. Marco rubio said he would support donald trump as the nominee. Odd given what he was saying about him the rest of the night. Once his message was ignore the insults. Last night it was ignore anything but the insults. Like for team rouxeo . Rward look lets ask one of his advisers, jason rowe. Good to have you this morning. The change is stark and obvious and ugly. What do you think it gets you to attack the person in donald trump . Well, i just think last night was embarrassing for the country that donald trump has taken this process to the gutter the way he has were. At some point weve just got to stand up and say enough is enough. Ive said before that i wouldnt tolerate this behavior in my 6yearold. Last night i couldnt tolerate my 6yearold watching the debate. I had to send him to the other room. Im with you on that. My kids wouldnt watch it either. You have to own some of this responsibility, dont you . Your man brought up the hands. Your man has talked about personal things that he used to ignore and condemn. Now he is owning the strategy as much as anybody. Well, i think we have to stop blaming everyone else for Donald Trumps behavior. We need to stop making excuse for where he is taking this process. What marco did, what youre referring to what youre referring to is marco having a little bit of fun on the stump at trumps expense. Standing on the debate stage with the entire world looking at the four candidates and sizing up who should be leader of the free world is a much different situation. That is the time we should be having a substantive discussion. The media is complicit too. It drags all the attention in his direction. It is one of the reasons we are where we are. Fair criticism to a point. You noticed last night who using as an example of when you test donald trump. Not their own morning show. Mine. You saw alisyn ask a tough question. Me asking a tough question. She was giving me the eye when i said my show. The senator was on today. Thats great. He has turned down a lot too. Not all candidates are the same. Not all media is the same. There has been a shift. The point is why. Do you believe the strategy now is lets do what we have to to keep him down, trump so we can get to a convention. I think going back to the media on this, this process is supposed to be a vetting of candidates. And i dont think theres been a thorough vetting of the candidates. At some point it becomes the other campaigns responsibility to point it out. There are shortcomings in his hands. You do have to own that part. And i understand why you would do it. I own it. But i own the fun on the stump die major on it. Not standing and having a debate for two hours talking about the direction of the country. Its a much different setting. A much different environment. And the reality is that we havent been aible to have substantive discussions. Any time you try to have one, donald trump immediately defaults to insulting and attacking anyone he disagrees with. He was challenged multiple times last night to offer policy prescriptions. Every time he turned to the attacks . I understand where youre coming from on that level. I want to make it very clear. We are at a critical point. The senator is invited on new day every day, certainly every week to make the case. I want you to know opportunity exists. Please pass it along as well is. Then you wouldnt be able to have me on, chris. Well have you on. I dont like to have men that much better looking than me on the show. But ill make an compensation. What do you think might happen . Say you dont get to 1,237 which looks very likely at this point. But you have enough to keep trump from 1,237. What are you planning for . Every campaign has a responsibility to plan for the contingencies there. As you mentioned, you need 1,237 delegates to get the nomination. Marco is is somewhere 200. We have 150 delegates on saturday. There is a long way to go in this thing. We are only 15 states in out of 50 plus states and territories that will be involved in the process. We have to prepare for that. What happens the next 10 states prior to florida, what happens in florida i think will shake this out in a serious way. Were going to find out who the true alternative to donald trump is. And we may end up having to take this disaster of a process all the way to convention. Really at the end of the day from our perspective is about our country. This is not just about marco rubio. As a country are we going to consider nominating someone like donald trump to be the leader of the free world. Two last questions, one easy and one is hard. If you dont win in florida, are you still going to go on . And explain how marco rubio and you is and your whole campaign can feel the way you do about donald trump but say, i will support him as the nominee. As obscene he is as a candidate, the policies of Hillary Clinton and her agenda are even more obscene. It is hobsons choice when we get to it. What this is about is our country. The continuation of the obamas administrations policies are even more dangerous to the country than are Donald Trumps antics and behavior. . And youll stay in even if you dont win florida . Its not florida. Its the 10 states before and where we are in the delegate count that will determine the path forward. There is a lot of stuff we have to consider about moving forward. Jason roe thank you for coming on new day and answering questions. Plenty of Fire Exchange in last nights debate. Who were the winners, who were the losers . Well get to that next. Republican frontrunner donald trump taking heat from a fiery debate. Marcos dad started as a bar tender. My dad started washing dishes. You know how Many Americans wanted those jobs . Roughly 300 applied. Donald hired 17. You argue you are here to fight on behalf of the american worker. When you have chances to help the American Workers, you are making clothes overseas and hiring workers from overseas. Joining us to talk about this is host of smerconish, michael smerconish. Good morning. How do you describe what you watched last night . Victory for hillary. I think the gop brand is suffering in this process. After 2012, after the romney loss, youll recall the socalled odd topsy of what had gone wrong. There had been 20 debates in the last cycle. They felt the brand had been harmed in large measure because of some of the reaction. I am mindful of the fact that republican turnout exceeds democratic turnout. I think there is an enthusiasm issue on the democratic side of the aisle. But the behavior on that stage last night i think comes back to haunt them in the fall. I know that you often watch with your trusty white board. And you have arrows going up and arrows going down. Was there a winner last night . Probably not. I think ted cruz had a particularly good evening. I think john kasich continues to distinguish himself as being the loan adult on that stage. But that core constituency for donald trump is so locked in. Chris made reference to this early this morning. I just dont think it matters. Mitt romney delivered a stunning set of remarks. It was a 20minute takedown of donald trump. It was the wrong messenger and it came too late. If youll indulge me, i think the real issue is whether they are going to try to defeat donald trump in the upcoming primaries and caucuses or can see they cant do that. And instead concentrate all the energies on thwarting him in cleveland. Thats what governor romney seemed to be suggesting yesterday. Well, hes back at it this morning. He was on another morning show. He talked again about his strategy to attempt to take down donald trump. Listen to this, michael. Theres no question i am going to do everything within the political bounds to make sure we dont no, maam night donald trump. I dont think he has the temperament. Michael, donald Trump Supporters dont care what mitt romney says. It makes them even certain that donald trump is right. Because they think mitt romney represents everything they dont like about the gop. Totally agree. Hes the embodiment of everything that motivated the constituency thus far. Yesterday he said marco rubio should win florida. He hopes john kasich wins ohio, in the same way ted cruz won texas. What he is really saying is, i think, gentlemen, win your own states so donald trump cant get to the magical number of 1,237 and lets decide this in cleveland. They had touphe opportunity to adopt that line and they didnt. At the end of the debate last night, they were asked again to reiterate their pledge. They call trump a liar, flipflopper. They all said, yes, they would support the nominee. How is that going to work . Thrts no credibility. How do you call him a con man one day and fast forward a couple of months and stand in cleveland and put your arms raised in the air together. This morning ive been doing some thinking and research. What is the most recent comparison where one republican candidate went after another and then came around to support him . The worst is 1980, George Herbert walker bush said Ronald Reagans trickle down theories is video so economics. That is nothing compared to the sniping that has gone in this campaign so far. Can we look at the other side of the aisle. This weekend is another democratic debate. There has been news about Hillary Clinton and her email, the email scandal. The guy. The top i. T. Guy, the staffer who set up the private server has been given immunity. He can now talk to the fbi. How do you think that plays into this weekend and beyond . As an attorney, im totally cognizant because he is given immunity does not mean there was anything unlawful. It is an investigative tool. To your question, i think Bernie Sanders is making a mistake by not talking about her quote, unquote damn emails. A federal judge appointed by bill clinton said there is a reasonable suspicion that the publics right to know for freedom of information act requests has been thwarted. Why Bernie Sanders doesnt raise this as a lack of transparency is beyond me. Thats the same issue hes talking about with big money when he talks about the 501c4. He should make the same point about her emails. Alisyn, you know what the internals show about her honesty and trustworthy numbers. Theyre horrific even more democrats. He need to exploit that or he cant win. Michael smerconish, always great to talk to you. Thank you. You too. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders will square off sunday night, 8 00 p. M. Republican president ial frontrunner donald trump facing tough critique in last nights debate over a lawsuit alleging Trump University was a fraud. Take a listen. Theres a difference between flexibility and telling people whatever you think you need to say to get them to do what you want them to do. And thats what donald has done throughout his career. Not right. Thats why Trump University is so this is a case that could be settled easily. I dont settle cases when im right. 98 approval rating. Thats false. The rating from the Better Business bureau was a dminus. The last publicly available rating in 2010 and a result of a number of complaints they had received. But it was elevated to an a. Thats never been publicly released. I can give it to you. Trump wasting no time after that tweeting out his Better Business bureau a rating. This controversy is not going away. A judge just said that the case will move forward. Joining us now is the man bringing that case. New yorks attorney general eric schneiderman. Good to have you here. Who better than you, a fact checker. The rating of that company, my Research Shows that it bounced around a lot, saying it got an a rating. Is that a Fair Assessment . No. It had a rating that went down. Trump university started in 2005. The new York State Education Department started going after them very quickly, because you cant just put up a sign and say were a university in new york. No accreditation . No accreditation, the teachers werent certified for anything, the curriculum wasnt approved so eventually changed their maim to Trump Entrepreneurship Institute winding down in 2010 and it may be that the trump anne tra pra nuership institute got an a rating. But Trump University, the last rating was Something Like a d. Is it true you were looking to give him a deal and he said no . Obviously the case didnt settle. Hes making it sound like he didnt want to settle. Hes going to fight because its accurate. Is that accurate . He settles cases. When youre in Court Dealing with the legal system you cant make up things the way you can in a campaign. There are documented cases he settled repeatedly. People negotiate, see if they can settle this one. Once we get closer to Summary Judgment on something here, they may reopen the negotiations, but hes not someone who doesnt settle cases. Im not sure why people arent just checking the records because its publicly available. So attorney general, what do you got . What is the case against Trump University . Its a pretty straightforward case. A bait and switch game. Mr. Trumps role, a pitchman and he added my handpicked instructors, copy what i did and get rich. Trump did not have anything to do with picking instructors or developing the curriculum. It wasnt his personal secret. People lured in they would learn from mr. Trump and in fact hiring instructor, we have stri stricts of the sessions, hired people that worked in retail and fast food. Those are the instructors off offered. What makes this difference than people paying for Getting Better in some facet of their life and it either does or doesnt give them benefit . Youre allowed to run seminars but not commit fraud. Were going to teach you Donald Trumps secrets and hes never had a part in writing the curriculum, thats fraud. You cant take money from people with false representation. The Appellate Court held all for court, exceptive Business Practices and have already gotten rejudgment hes personally liable for unlawfully running an unlicensed universities. The rest of our claims now go forth. What is the exposure of his liability . Its millions of dollars. Some of it we want for the state of new york, because they broke all rules and regulations and holding themselves out as a university when they werent and the other would be to collect been for the students, people ripped off, who want money back. How many people were hurt in this and how badly were they hurt . Thousands of people and millions of dollars. A lot of these folks paid 25,000, 50,000. Not rich people. Instructors telling people you cant dough well in real estate unless you have a lot of credit. They would get people to use the extra credit to buy more trump seminars s. It a fair qualification of this, even if you make this case, this is a civil suit about liability, really comes down to money. Its not criminal. Not like what could happen to Hillary Clinton . Thats what you hear from the trump camp. Dont equate with whats going on with clinton. Thats criminal. Thats the fbi. This is just about money. Its just civil. Is that fair . Not at all. A case about fraud. Someone youre looking to be president the issue of credibility is very important, and this is a case that is not even a complicated one. The attorney generals office, people hold themselves out to be lawyering or doctors that arent, this is the equivalent of putting up a sign saying trump hospital when its not and the people in it arent nurses and doctors. Basically what he did. Its not a light charge. Its a very serious charge for someone who wants the public trust to take a much more important role. He has come at you personally, donald trump. He says, of course, schneidermans coming after me, paid off by the lawyers who made donations to his campaign and now is helping them . Two theorietheories. One lawyer in this very Large Law Firm in one of the cases gave me 10,000 in the fall of 2010 when i was first running for a. G. , and at the same period of time, donald trump gave me 12,500. Not motivated by money since he gave me more than anyone even tan tangentially on the other side. We ran in syracuse a few weeks before the case evolved. President obama and more important things to talk about than mr. Trump and certainly in 2013 when i sued him. We had no idea he would run for president. A straightup fraud case. Not political, not based on contributions. The evidence is overwhelming. You can change your position in a campaign. Once you get under oath in a deposition in court, its very hard to hide. He is on the witness list . Right . He may be someone you can call . About afghanistan, you said we made a terrible mistake. We made a mistake going into iraq. Our question was about afghanistan. That day on october i never said that. How is any of this telling it like it is . Well, in afghanistan i did mean iraq in that one if you noticed i corrected it in the second day. Reporter in fact, cnn reporting was prevalent. And i havent i have not started on hillary yet. Believe me, i will start soon. I havent even started. Reporter alisyn, the first test whether those attacks will actually have an affect on donald trump comes tomorrow night, Super Saturday primaries. Here in michigan tuesday, march 8th, for everybody pointing to what could happen next . Its all about march 15th. Winner take all states, ohio and florida that could determine whether or not the republican establishment can stop or at least slow down donald trump, or whether donald trump really will turn his entire focus to Hillary Clinton, alisyn . Things are getting even more interesting, if thats possible, phil. Thanks for the background. Earlier i spoke with florida senator marco rubio who takes plenty of issue with donald trump and says he is prepared to go the distance in what he calls the most Unusual Campaign of his lifetime. Well, i think its par for the course and very unusual election. Look, i go into these debates and hope every question is a policy question. It hasnt been that way, because donald trump has been perhaps the most vulgar i dont, not perhaps. The most vulgar person ever to aspire to the presidency in regards how hes carried out his candidacy and cut into the debate and what is asked about. Im not complaining. It is what it is were asked. The majority of have something to do with he said or he said. I would love to have a policy debate. Thats important. Were talking about the presidency of the United States here, if you saw in that exchange, donald trump did not give a policy answer, immediately retorted to attacking me personally. Its become a point, voters deserve more than what theyre getting out of these debates and this campaign. Youve taken a page out of dnds playbook. Talked his little hands and last night that came up. He talked about his endowment, and i dont mean to his alma mater. Let me play that moment for you. Hold on. Let me just play it. Hes really not that much of a lightweight and i have to say this, i have to say this he hit my hands. Nobody has ever hit my hands, ive never heard of this one. Look at those hands. Are they small hands . And he referred to my hands, if theyre small, Something Else must be small. I guarantee you, theres no problem. I guarantee it. Senator, what was going through your head at that moment . Well, i mean, nothing surprises us anymore. This man is as i told you. Hes injected a level of vulgarity into the political discourse weve never seen. As far as what i i said first of all, i didnt say what hes saying and said it one time. Hes personally attacked a disabled journalist, everyone, basically. Theres no one he has not personally attacked sometimes in the most vulgar pways. Im out there every day talking about the future of america, outlying real plans and an optimistic vision of the futures my campaign is not doom and gloom but how things can be better if we do a certain set of things and thats what i want the Republican Party to be about, the conservative movement and ultimately what our next proceed should be about. Join me to put a stop to this ridiculousness and rally the party and offer a clear alternative to the American People. All right. Lets get more perspective from the other side of the race. Joining us this morning, jeff dewitt, arizona chairman for donald trump, also the Arizona State treasurer. Good to see you again, sir. Chris, great to be here. Thank you. All right. So just as a guilty pleasure i want to replay the high low point of the night. Certainly the line of the night and it came from the gop frontrunner donald trump, your man. Here it is. Dont happen. Good. Probably better. Why would he say take the bait. Any way you want to qualify it. Why would he make such a base comment about his hands and by extension Something Else . Well marco rubio has been, he turned into marco rickles doing his best on rickles impression for the last few weeks, and so we hent from marco robot to marco rickles. Donald trump wanted to bring it up and show america that marco rubio should be held accountable for the comment and more a of way, and shine light on it. Kind of a funny comment at the same time. And so just to shine light on how marco rubio has gone against everything he had said before, and turned into the person now, really, taking it to a new level. It wasnt just the hands. He also made comments about donald trump peeing his pants. A lot of comments in the last few weeks that really took everything to a new low. It is a useful defense for you to this question to say what else was happening on that stage. No question that donald trump was not alone last night, and certainly he was alone in one way, which was in the middle of those two men. He did seem to be getting tag teamed all night. Is that your perspective as well . Oh, absolutely. Everybody was throwing everything they had at him. Obviously theres desperation there as donald trump keeps climbing in the polls, and marco rubio now falling especially. Yeah. Serious desperation there, but i think donald trump was the clear, clear winner of the debate last night, and the clear second place by far absolutely has to be ben carson. He did a wonderful, wonderful job of avoiding that mess altogether, and so i think ben carson takes second place but donald trump clearly won the debate, hands down. Not john kasich. No pun intended with the hands comment. I heard you. So lets talk about the inconsistency argument made about him last night. Not just last night. Play you something that he said about something that matters. Role as commander in chief dealing with interrogation, dealing with tactics considered torture. Heres the sound. This really started with ted, a question asked of ted last two, two debates ago about waterboarding and ted was having a hard time with that question. They then came to me. Waterboarding, i said its fine. If we want to go stronger id go stronger, too. Now, tell me why thats okay as an answer given what has come out about waterboarding, how its been found to not be acceptable behavior for the United States . Well, you know, war is war. I think thats basically the point that donald trump is trying to make. Its that war is war, and we keep sending our military overseas and tying one of their hands behind their back and we have to finally wake up and say, if were going to put our brave men and women in harms way, we have to let them do their job. Part of war is worse than that, its killing people. Thats the bottom line. Its kill or be killed, and we have people overseas that are chopping heads off and we cant we cant treat them with, you know, kid gloves if were going into ballots with them. Understood. More making the point we have to fight fire with fire and make sure were protecting our men and women first. Understood. One of the things that makes america a leader in these areas is that what it does and doesnt do in the name of fairness even in war certainly not to torture. The issue then gets presented by military leaders as, you know. They came out with a letter, been on the tv shows saying, nobodys waterboarding anybody. Donald trump would have to bring his own bucket, considered torture. We wont do it. So donald trump responded to that last night. Here it is. Im a leader. Im a leader. Ive always been a leader. Never had any problem leading people. If i say do it, theyre going to do it. Thats what leadership is all about. This was in reference to donald trump saying, by the way, you shouldnt just go after terrorist. You should target their families, which military leaders have said thats illegal and sounds like a mob tactic. By the way, even if a commander in chief told us to do that, we wouldnt, because of those two reasons i just told you. Can you imagine a situation like that . Would donald trump really try to be in a showdown with the military . Good news is, its bringing to light issues that our Congress Needs to deal with. These are things that need to be talked about, and we need to finally get clear and hard lines drawn on what should and should not be done. These are conversations that need to be had, and donald trump is always the candidate that has the courage and the vision to at least get the topics out there that need to be discussed. Jeff truly, something we have to get to the bottom of. Jeff, if this goes to convention and donald doesnt get the 1,237 delegates and then doesnt get the nomination, even though he has the most delegates, assuming that as convention, will he hold to the pledge made last night, yes, ill support the eventual nominee even if not him that has the most delegates the at the convention . Let me back track into mitt romneys speech last night. Not what he said but why he said it. If you drill down into what he was sending, sending a message to the establishment as long as we keep donald trump from getting the number of delegates, we will broker the convention, and ill tell you who is the biggest loser in that speech besides mitt romney was marco rubio. Donors abandoned ship with marco rubios campaign and with the gop looking for an alternative. That speech, to me, was mitt romney throwing his hat in the ring and somebody, and i hope you do, chris, somebody needs to get mitt romney on the phone and ask him the question are you trying to be the nominee, and get him to really pin down if he will accept that nomination. Because it sure looks to me he wants another bite of the apple and trying to throw himself back in there. Now, i think all of the candidates would be upset if mitt romney comes in, sweeps in and takes that nomination without doing any of the work, spending any of the money or time away from his family and any of the vetting process how that this dozen debates, i think everybody should be up and arms over that and i think then, as we are here, really, all heck is going to break loose with the Republican Party. Just so you know, mitt romney said this morning on another morning show that he is not looking for the nomination. Of course, things can change. Your campaign has been clear from the start. Jeff dewitt that if the Republican Party doesnt play fair, all bets of off. Well see what happens if this comes to a convention. Thank you very much for being on new day as always. Thank you, chris. All right. Meanwhile, the democrats are counting down to the next round of caucuses and primaries. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders campaigning hard with four states up for grabs this weekend. Bring in our senior washington correspondent joe johns with more on the big weekend ahead. Reporter good morning, michaela. The focus is on michigan this morning, though a whole slew of states vote saturday and sunday and over the next couple weeks including mississippi, illinois, ohio, north carolina, kansas, louisiana, but it is michigan thats in the spotlight with its primary next week, and also front and center, because of the democratic debate over e the weekend in flint, michigan. That flint water crisis caused both candidates to make the citys predicament part of their stump speeches and both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have visited the city. The former secretary of state, though, continues to keep her focus on the republicans, last night chiming in on twitter about the Republican Debate, tweeting how many more of these do we have to sit through asking for a friend . That tweet included a little gift of clinton rolling her eyes and rubbing her temples. A slightly different take from senator sanders miking the making the case he, not clinton, a moreformidable opponent against donald trump. Some people out there including my opponents say bernies a nice guy but not electable. Let me refer you to many, many National Polls which have me beating donald trump and beating him badly. Most of those polls i beat him with bigger margins than secretary clinton does. So Bernie Sanders will be campaigning in illinois today. Then supposed to end up in western michigan. Hillary clinton giving a speech in detroit. Michaela . Joe, thanks so much. Were calling it march madness cnnstyle. Tomorrow tune in for Super Saturday coverage anchored by this good lookin fella beside me. Then sunday the next democratic debate in flint, michigan. That would now, you two, dont fight. Followed by the premiere of the new cnn series race to the white house next tuesday is the next super tuesday night. Wednesday will bring another democratic debate in miami and thursday, a Republican Debate in miami. A full week of political events right here on cnn, if i have to separate you two were starting to act like the candidates. I know i dont even know i can do the man hands thing anymore. Such a charged environment. I dont even like using my hands, and im italian. Sit on them. I dont blame you. Texas, senator ted cruz went after trump and agreed to support him as the nominee. Its not what you said at the breathe breathe breathe. You can do it. You can breathe. I foe its hard. I know its hard, but just when theyre done with the yoga, can i answer a question . You cannot i really hope we dont see yoga on this stage. Hes very flexible. You never know. Oh, the zinger of the night. What is cruz plan to overtake the republican frontrunner . Lets ask ted cruzs Communications Director alice stewart. Good morning, alice. Great to be with you. Thank you, alisyn. Alice when you were backstage last night watching this debate were you cheering or cringing . Well, when ted spoke we were cheering. He made some tremendous points. We had two candidates out there talking about things that arent important to the American People, and ted brought it home. He talked specifically about issues that people are concerned with. Here in detroit, in a nominal, fantastic city, theyve been decimated by 60 yesix years of ral leftwing policies, destroyed the economy and put them on a situation where theyre fighting back economically and ted outlined policies just for for detroit and across america to help rebuild the economy starting with his flat tax that would help businesses grow and doing away with the burdensome government regulations. Doing away with obama care. Repealing the irs. The kind of things people are concerned with, and serious talk on a debate stage in a president ial campaign is exactly what the people want to hear, and ted cruz delivered that in a phenomenal way. Alice, some disappointed this morning that at times ted cruz and marco rubio seemed almost to be working in tandem. There wasnt a cross word exchanged between them as they both went after donald trump. Let me play a portion for you. You know, marcos dad started as a bartender. My dad started washing dishes and yet you know how Many Americans wanted those jobs . Roughly 300 applied. Donald hired 17. You argue youre here to fight on behalf of the american worker, but when you have chances to help the American Workers youre making your clothes overseas and hiring your workers from overseas. Okay. That was both of them going after donald trump. Was that a deliberate strategy last night . I can tell you our debate strategy does not involve anything that marco rubio may say. It was ted speaking directly to donald trump about his hiring Foreign Workers and thats a concern. Here he is someone who has claimed to carry the mantel on immigration conversation in this debate process and in this campaign, yet hes hired countless Illegal Immigrants at his businesses and even more troubling, what we dont know. What did he say to that New York Times reporter when he was talking about immigration off the record, when she has claimed hes saying that everything im talking about immigration here is just political speak, and its not going to mean anything if i were to be elected. Those are the things that are concerning. Not just what we do know about donald trump, but its what we dont know, and those conversations with the New York Times as well as his tax returns that are hidden of a grave concern. Thats what ted pointed out last night and did it in a way that was focusing on the issues, focusing on the policies and why were seeing tremendous momentum. Why the headlines we see is donald trump questioned in the debate in detroit. Focusing on policies and being the grownup on the stage, and that will resonate with people as were seeing more and more people coalesce behind ted cruz. Talk about that mow mend um. Look at the calendar. This weekend, five contests. Kansas, kentucky, louisiana, maine and puerto rico. They all offer, you know, lots of delegates. Where do you think ted cruz can win . This weekend . Well, lets just take, for example, today. Were heading to louisiana. Going up to washington to speak at cpac, a tremendous gathering of conservatives across the country. Well continue to go to many states. Were going to kansas and kentucky, and were going to compete across all of these states that are in the near future. Theres many states that are strong for ted cruz. Well be certainly in florida in the next few days, and were looking at it from this standpoint. You have to have 1,237 delegates to order to win. We have donald with a little over 300. Us over 200. Marco rubio far behind at 100. We have seen tremendous momentum gathering behind our campaign and that will allow us to continue to do what weve been doing. Were right on strategy with our plan in order to wrack up the delegates and have the finances to do it. Brought in 12 million in the month of february. Thats critical for us to campaign and acquire delegates and made the announcement yesterday we had several of the jeb bush former finance team members that have joined our team to help in that finance effort. Were feeling very encouraged that the delegates will be acquire ed by ted cruz far earl enough for where we will not have a brokered convention. Alice stewart, thanks for being on new day. Appreciate it. Thisappreciate you, alisyn. Hillary clinton actually got a little bit of a pass. However, will Bernie Sanders pounce on the latest email controversy in the democratic showdown . The republicans were very, very busy going after each other at last nights debate, and seemed almost for a while they had shifted away from Hillary Clinton entirely, but that wasnt the case. The email issue kamg up benghazi came up, although it took a couple hours into the debate. Lets talk about whats going on with the Hillary Campaign with former White House Press secretary jay carney. Jay good to see you. Good to see you, chris. All right. So lets play what senator rubio said last night it is the most concentrated attack of Hillary Clinton that she ho deal with. Here we go. The other one is under fbi investigation, and not only under fbi investigation she lied to the families of the victims of benghazi and anyone who lies to the families of victims who lost their lives in the service of our countries can never be a commander in chief of the United States. Did Hillary Clinton lie to the families of the victims of benghazi . Absolutely not. You know, as somebody who worked at the white house through a lot of the benghazi discussion, you know, i can tell you that the conservative, or republican conspiracy theories about what happened have all failed to pan out, and the fact is that it was a tragedy, and what we did learn is that we need to provide better security around our embassies and around our diplomatic personnel, and we have to recognize that these men and women who serve in our installations overseas are taking risks just like our military are, men and women are, around the world. How do you refute the premise, though, which is the two stories, theory, you know, not a conspiracy, a fact, that Hillary Clinton did give two different versions as secretary of state about why it had happened. How do you explain that . Because, chris, at the time, and, again, i lived through this, you know, it was incredibly unclear, you know, what sparked the violence at the facilities in benghazi. There were waves of protests across the middle east, outside of embassies, u. S. Embassies in the region, including some breaches of Embassy Facilities in the region over the incredibly provocative antiimlaws imvideo that had surfed in the region and also an unbelievable amount of unrest in general, and lack of political control in general in benghazi. What we knew is that it was an assault that had taken the lives of four americans, including our ambassador, and we knew that there was also a great deal of unrest and antiamerican activity across the region. So i think that the repeated investigations led by Republican Committee chairman demonstrated it failed to pan out and i think for them to be true you would be impugning the reputation and credibility of a former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff who served under president george w. Bush, admiral mullen, impugning the reputation and credibility of one of our greatest diplomats, Tom Pickering served under democratic and republican president s in the past, as well as the reputations and credibility of Republican Committee, republicanled committees in the house and senate. The explanation aside, you know the questions remain. You see it in the exit polls. If we put up oak where Bernie Sanders won. You know that. Massachusetts a hotly contested state. Hillary clinton won there, but in both of them, trustworthiness, Hillary Clinton, lucky to get over 50 in her own party. Fueling that is what she calls the drip, drip, drip with the emails. Now you have one of her guys having to plead the fifth before he would talk to the feds. And now the logs being brought into the investigation. It suggests there is their there. Your response . Theres no question the clintons have been on the National Political stage for a long time and the subject of a barrage of criticism and investigation. This is the fbi, though, not tray gowdy, jay. I hear you. And, look, this is a challenge for her. Much more of a challenge for her in the general election when shes the nominee, which i think we all expect she will be, but you know, thats thats an issue for her that shes going to have to contest. The way you contest it is you deal with the issue. You realize that you dont have total control over it, because an investigation is not something you can spin or control and then you focus on your Campaign Message about, you know, sound governance and helping the middle class, and see where that takes you. You cant spend a lot of time worrying about things out of your control. Jay carney, the questions are out there. Thank you for providing answers for us this morning. Good to see you on new day. Thank you, chris. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders are going to have their moment in the spotlight now. The next one, the debate sunday night in flint, michigan. The Unemployment Rate holds steady at 4. 9 . Stick with cnn. Much more coverage of this throughout the day. Lets get back to politics. Last nights Republican Debate. Its all about the players and the impact we we have another one right now. On the phone republican president ial candidate john kasich. Governor, are you with us . I am, chris. Good morning to you. You are being somewhat celebrated this morning for being the only person who staid above the fray. How did you take what was going on around you last night . Well, i dont get too much distracted by it, chris. Theres things that i want to tell the people, and, you know, now that the field is really nair ode it gives me a little bit more opportunity. I dont have to fight as much to get time. I mean, its just been the wackiest process, but, look, i thought last night was very good for me. You know, being able to lay out not only the expertise i have in terms of domestic policy, but also foreign policy, and then show a little bit of my heart. You know, thats been the hardest the hardest thing, chris, in the debates, is that they cant get the full picture of who you are, but i was very, very pleased, and, you know, were just going to Campaign Like crazy all day all the way up through ohio and im going to win ohio. I want to ask you about that, where the confidence is coming from. We see in the polls that theres strength there. Some strength in michigan, also, but as you have said many times, you know who somebody is by what they do. Last night you had people going at it in a level that really speaks to what seems to be a crisis within your party. Did you ever think the gop would be in the situation it is right now with all of these people coming out and trying to sabotage the frontrunner . You know, its just pretty crazy, but, listen, were when i win ohio, and i will be doing better in other northern states as well, this things going to go to the convention. Thats what i think is going to happen. Its going to be a very exciting time and why not . In this crazy, crazy year, of all the things that have been said, all the fighting thats gone on, you know, whatever crazy can happen seems to. And i just i kind of chuckle. I wake up every day, and theres i mean, frankly, a lot of us just walk around and we laugh. We burst out laughing when we hear some of the things that are happen. Is it a laugh or cry kind of situation for you . Youve always been a guy who, if you have to knuckle up, youll knuckle up, but never about cheap shots. Thats like the main dialogue last night. Its not hyperbolic. I have a 13yearold in civics class i could never watch last night. Its not i dont think the way to conduct yourself in politics. I actually thought last night it was not as bad as it was the debate before. And i think its fair to talk about the record. I think its fair to talk about the business dealings. Sure. But at some you got to kind of let it go and not just back and forth. If thats what they want to do, they can do it. Im not gotting into that. Somebody sent me an email, somebody important well, everybodys important. Sent an email, because you dont attack trump, are you secretly working with him . The most outrageous email. I wrote back. Heres what i wrote. So youre not going to beat trump by smearing him. Youre going to beat him by having a bigger vision and a record of accomplishment. You know, these people really dont care, frankly what mitt romney has to say about donald trump. They just dont care, and you know, they keep pounding him and pounding him. His voters are different. They are frustrated, fed up and anybody connected to the establishment that attacks him gets nowhere. The way you get to his voters, and ive picked up a focus group last night. Three people switched their position. Guess what . From trump to kasich. I mean, and this will be all public. This is going to be on the air. Three of them, and i just kind of chuckled when i saw it, but you know, the reason is paint a bigger vision. Give a record of accomplishment. Stop banging on the guy is what im going to do. So, you know, i think it will work. If it doesnt work, you know, chris, thats the ball game. Right . Look, i get your outlook at it. You had it since the beginning. Certainly when going at trump, seems a lot of his supporters are telling him that theyre stupid. Something at risk in this current strategy. Are you concerned if it goes to the convention you may get boxed out . What was going on on the stage last night with cruz and rupeio, it se rubio, seemed like a concerted action. Whats your take on it . Im not worried about getting boxed out. Im worried about getting enough rest, getting some exercise. Having some food and keeping, you know keeping myself energized and you take things one day at a time in this business. If you start thinking too far ahead, you know, you cant predict the future, and most of the things that you think might happen in the future usually dont happen. So my deal is, its that i want people to believe that you can get elected by raising the bar. I want people to believe that ideas, vision, accomplishments matter, and look, then well see. But im going to tell you this once i win ohio, its a whole new ball game. And youre confident youre going to win ohio . Oh, i am. Look, we have to work. No question about it. Weve got to put the time in, were going to put the time in. Weve got a great organization. A tremendous grass roots, and, you know, im very i feel very, very confident about it. Yeah. I have no doubt in my mind. There is a path. The numbers are soft, obviously as youre saying, it is one day at a time. Well make you the promise everybody on the race, you have an invitation to come on to the show at least every week to talk about what matters. Well come on every day. Do something. My press guy is sitting right here. I love to do the show. You know . And well do it as often as youll take us. We love it. Done. Governor, invites are coming. You know that. We want to keep this above board and talk about what matters. You have a place at new day. And best to the whole family. Appreciate it. Thank you very much, gov. Take care. Thank you. Alisyn . I think he means your new day family and we accept that. He does. Thats great. We hope he will come on every day. Hes always interesting to talk to. He is, and if he wants to talk about what actually matters to people, amen. Bring it on. There we go. All right. Meanwhile, a new cnn series and it dives into the drama of past elections. A good question. Looking more and more norms the norms these days. Good point. I asked kevin spacey when we sat down. The Academy Award winner is also the executive producer of cnns new series race for the white house. How do you think the media has changed since the dawn of this country . I think edward r. Murrow was right. I think in 1964 when he spoke to his colleagues at that journalism dinner and he shot an arrow across the bough and said when the news divisions decide that news has to compete with entertainment, when they decide that it has to be about ratings, it will no longer be news. It will be entertainment. So i think the media today is complicit in what we get, because of ratings and because of money. Dont ratings tell you what viewers are interested in . Depends on if you believe the nielsens. I dont. A antiqueated, old, on its way out. I think there will come a time when we have setelevisions, peoe will to do opt into it, what and when youre watching on your set and that will be very telling to see how that changes advertising rates when we really know and are not looking at a box saying, well that box represents 500,000 people. It doesnt. Jfk nixon. Youve talked ak that. What was most compelling about that race . I think its sort of remarkable to discover there was a sort of unspoken understanding between the media and candidates back then. No one i mean, everyone knew about kennedys severe illnesses. Did everyone know . I think a lot of people knew. I think a lot of people knew about a lot of things, but there was a kind of, you know, they just kind of nodded their heads and didnt report it and didnt write about it and didnt talk about it. Boy, what a different day that was. So its sort of interesting. You discover all of this stuff and also think some of the most interesting things were able to uncover all of the news footage of election nights of all of the campaigning, all the stuff. A lot of stuff that i had never seen before that they uncovered, which is really great to look at. Frank underwood is a ruthless character, obviously. How do you think he would fare in the 2016 race . Everybody else would be dead. I think hed fare incredibly well, i think. Yeah. Someone asked me, would he support donald trump . And i said, oh, he definitely would be behind him, to shove him. Such a good line. Which president , or candidate, do you think he most resembles . I dont. You know, and its interesting, because when we first started the series, there were a lot of questions about who do i model the character Frank Underwood after, and the truth is, look, we used the original british series, when the character then was named francis irkkuwait, didnt think is sounded like an american name. Send the kids to bed and called him Frank Francis underwood but really didnt base him on anybody. It was beau willmonts invention, the kind of character we thought he could be. I really dont compare the fictional world to the real world. Every now and then shoot a scene a story line, kind of crazy, and ill think, wow, have we gone too far . Like, have we crossed the rubicon . Is this realistic . Does this make any logical sense . And then i turn on the tv. I realize, we havent gone far enough, because its crazier out there in the real world than it is in our fictional world. And las, youre still hopeful . Oh absolutely. Im a big optimist. I believe in public service, i believe its incredible to pursue. I would be frustrated but i believe our world proves there are people that can get out there in the political world and get things done and have progressive ideas that help people live their lives and i think thats fantastic. I just would be incredibly frustrated, because i really do like to have a goal and get things done. So id probably take on Frank Underwood tactics to which wouldnt be good. So even if you fancy yourself a president ial history buff. Yes. There are things you will learn in this series that you didnt know about these past races. Little nuggets people either have forgotten or unearthed. First, Nixon Kennedy and youll learn stuff, john berman. And things from kevin spacey. Irkkuwat didnt sound american and decided to change it to underwood. Interesting this once fun comes on the heels of a debate and will focus on the debate and the change of kennedy and the major sin, nixon was sweaty. Now, look what we had last night. You made the point. If you wrote a screenplay, nobody would believe it. Unbelievable. I will say, i think he was probably colored a little cynical there. I dont know if you watch house of cards but the guy is a homicidal sociopath. Were still about bad words. Nobodys pushing you often a subway platform. We hope not, ever. See race for the white house this sunday night, 10 00 eastern. About the Kennedy Nixon debate, how it changed politics airing right after the democratic debate right here on newsroom.
