Here this morning. Reporter both of the tornadoes were massive and long lived. Said to be on the ground for about an hour. This area typically holds 450 residents. 50 to 75 of this time is completely leveled. Im standing here by highway 15. Six or seven blocks is completely leveled. Structure behind me was two stories high. This morning you can see a refrigerator right underneath a completely stripped tree. Unfortunately, this is not an incident that stands alone. Yesterday 32 reports of tornado damage were out there. All of these centered around, of course, iowa, nebraska and wisconsin. Lets move, guys. Reporter an incredible outbreak of deadly tornadoes tearing through northeastern nebraska money resulting in a rare and stunning sight. Where has that happened before. Reporter Storm Chasers capturing not one by two tornadoes side by side ripping through the town of pilger. Thats a water tower. Reporter the twin tornadoes shocking Storm Chasers. Ive never seen anything like this. This is just very, very dangerous. Definitely the first time ive seen two tornadoes like that that violent on the same storm. Reporter they will resume searching through the rubble today but so far no one is unaccounted for. The governor of nebraska issuing a state of emergency, putting the National Guard on standby. The storm carved a path of destruction 25 to 30 miles long, leveling homes, farms and schools over three counties. The small town of pilger, the hardest hit. Whole blocks of houses are destroyed. I got to see something today i wish i never would see. Reporter the funnel clouds a mile wide powerfully churning up the ground below. Look at that. Thats crazy. Tossed around by the sheer force of the winds. Estimated up to 200 Miles Per Hour in each tornado. Sirens blaring warning residents to get underground as the twister barreled through nearby wisner. The kind of storms you need to be underground to survive. Reporter another storm chaser caught the same twin tornadoes devastating this farm around wakefield. They are merging. They are going to merge. Reporter before merging into one colossal funnel. This morning that Severe Weather threat extends to 14 million of you including in cities like chicago, detroit and even cleveland and right now chicago does have a tornado watch box up. What does that mean, a threat for Severe Weather until 9 30 this morning. Kate . As you mentioned earlier, the sun has yet to come up and thats when folks will get the real first image of what the destruction looks like. Indra, thanks so much. Overseas now. One win and world cup fever is sweeping the nation. With the thrust of his head john brooks found his way into americas hearts scoring the gamewinner right there in the final minutes of team usas opening match against ghana. Brooks historic goal gave the team a 21 win over the team that booted them from the last two world cup tournaments. Next um portugal on sunday. More from brazil. What a game. Reporter oh, kate, it was an absolutely stunning and crazy game. I was inside the stadium. And there were almost 40,000 people inside the stadium, almost sold out. I would say 90 of them were all dressed up in their red, white and blue, pure american supporters. It kind of seemed to give this team that extra little boost that they need for this match. That was a match that was all about revenge and redemption because, like you said, the usa has lost to ghana in the last two world cups and this match set the tone and gave the usa that confidence that they need to then move forward and play two even more difficult teams. Looking forward, portugal and germany, but before we look ahead to those matches and before we get there, this match was simply brilliant and it really started right from the getgo. The usa couldnt have asked for a better start. Just 29 seconds in and Clint Dempsey opened with a big goal. The earliest goal in world cup finals history. Reporter shocking beginning, fifth fastest goal in world cup history and crowds back home and here in the stadium simply erupted. Usa usa reporter it was that kind of support inside the stadium that really lifted this team right from the national anthem. Just hearing how loud they were and chanting the whole game. It was just really pushing us on reporter but it didnt go completely the americans away. Ghana was no pushover making a comeback late in the game. With the game tied at 11, it was the 21yearold john brooks playing in his first ever world cup that found the winning goal. The usa reporter before the game he talked about what its like being on the American National team. It was a big dream to come to this team. Its an honor to wear this jerseyy. It was a win for the usa that was remarkably hard fought. The commitment, the determination, the fight, the mentality. Those things carried us through. Reporter well, you can hear there john brooks. He kind of has a slight accent. Thats because hes actually germanborn and has an american father. Has really uteak tattoos on his arm, a big tattoo of germany on his right elbow and big tattoo of illinois which is where his father is from on his left elbow so he considers himself a true americangerman. Also a guy thats just 21 years old. Hes so young, and he was a really big get, lets call it, for Jurgen Klinsmann and this american squad because klinsmann really had to woo him over from germany so he didnt play for the German National team which he was also eligible for, and clearly this was a very good decision as he proved the unlikely hero. Kate . Unbelievable. The up likely hero, but, man, what a good morning to wake up being john brooks. Lara, thank you so much. Can you imagine the roar in that stadium when that goal happened. 30 second in, even that. The first goal. That was huge. That was a record by the way certainly for america but one of the fastest goals in world cup history. No joke, and that header was perfect. Were getting excited. I love that the guy is from germany. Thats what were all about in the u. S. Everybody is from somewhere else. Thats why the world cup in the Big International games, who plays for what and the different connection to a different country. I love that. Everyone says the United States, not such a soccer country, blah, blah, blah, but then you see the crowds, the fans. Its growing all the time. I have to say, people say that the u. S. Gets unlucky a lot, especially in the world cup. They didnt get unlucky yesterday. They got very lucky. Began with low expectations. Keep the low expectations going because its working. Begana controlled the ball over half of the game. Well see what happens next. The other big story of the morning, iraq. Now to the fight against isis extremists in that country. President obama spent last night going over options with his National Security team, but, still, no decision on how he plans to proceed. Now, hundreds of american troops are being sent to baghdad to support the u. S. Embassy with more personnel and resources on standby. Lets get the very latest. Michelle kosinski is live at the white house for us. Michelle, what are you hearing live from the white house this morning. Reporter hearing virtually the same phrase every day. No american boots on the ground, but there is an exception to that. Now we know president obama has sent approximately 275 u. S. Troops to the region. About 175 of whom have already entered baghdad. They are there to provide security to the u. S. Embassy that has had to be partially evacuated. The other 100 will stay in the region and be brought into iraq, if necessary, to secure air fields. Keep in mind more than 500 u. S. Marines are also on standby in the persian gulf. As you mentioned last night president obama met with Top White House and National Security officials. They were asked over the last few days to provide a range of options. Those options right now are still being weighed. Among them were fascinating options out there, at least thats being talked about and speculated upon outside of whats going on within the white house is some possible coordination with iran on this problem, but the u. S. Government is saying, at least, that thats not being discussed at this point militarily with iran. Chris in. Thank you very much for the reporting and perspective. You know what they say . War is old men talking and young men fighting. We know about the political problems and the work cut out for them there, but whats happening on the ground right now . What needs to happen forward . Lieutenant Rick Francona is here, cnn military analyst, former military attache in syria. Lets deal with whats in play right now. The most important thing, rick, to give some sense of is the movement of the violence right now. What are we seeing . Well, its rolling towards baghdad. If you look at the map and you see the cities that have fallen to isis already, they come down the two major attack axes to baghdad. Its moving like a snowball and as they go they gain strength. We thought as they went closer they would string themselves out and would become a target. The local militias have joined with them, the sunnis who feel oppressed under the maliki regime have joined them. They are collecting a lot of u. S. Military assets that we have given to the iraqis and have been fleeing. The good news is that they are being back filled as they move along by kurds who isis doesnt want to fight the kurds. The kurds believe these are some of their lands and they are moving in to places that isis has left behind. And kirkuk is the prime example. Kirkuk has been a goal of the kurds for decades. They believe its their capital city and they wanted it. The iraqi governments successive iraqi governments have always denied it to them. It was handed to them last week as iraqi army collapsed and pulled back. The kurds simply moved in and took what they always wanted. Now, also fair to say isis isnt showing that it can beat the Iraqi Military. The Iraqi Military to this point hasnt put up much of a fight, have they have . They have been up in the north, sunni army, shiia army. Really nothing to fight for. As they get closer to the baghdad, closer to the shiia area and their homeland and youll get a better equipped and trained iraqi force. And getting into more conventional areas where theres roadways, like we used to say about rome, all roads lead to baghdad and that will become essential in terms of being able to target these guys. These two roads are just that, in between them and off to the sides theres nothing. As they try to move down the roads they present a really good target for air power. Iraqi military basically spotted them on naked yesterday and wound up taking out a convoy of isis. Lets talk about how the u. S. Can help. No more boots on a ground, more political than practical at this point but drones. Saying you have to know before you can go. What can the drones do here . The drones carry a variety of sensors so its important to know what youre going to attack. If the decision is made that were going to employ u. S. Air power we have to know where to put the bombs. Its easy toe say lets go bomb something but much harder to decide what youre going to do because one thing we dont want to do is blow up a facility used by civilians or Something Like that. Isis is smart. They are going to take over schools, mosques, hospitals. Fair pushback. The politicians have been saying, once again, no quick action, no quick action. If you went and started bombing in the northeastern part of iraq without knowing where guys are, what would have been the civilian fallout . Youd kill a bunch of people because isis gets in with the population. Its easy to say we should be bombing. You need people on the ground to say these are the good guys and these are the bad guys and without u. S. Troops on the ground its very difficult to do that. Thats the difference between military perspective and political perspective. You hear the politicians saying they should have done more. They should have done more, but as youre saying, rick, you have to be careful and as you get closer to baghdad first the big question. Do you think isis can take out baghdad . Not right now. I dont think they have the strength to do it. As they get closer they will be running in what i call the real iraqi army, the units stationed there, posted there. Just look at the numbers. I mean, even if they gathered strength on the way down and can pump up their numbers say to 20,000, they will take on tens of thousands of iraqi troops, better trained, better equipped with a reason to fight. Now, unfortunately, a lot of those troops are motivated by the sectarian conflict, sunni versus shiia. Baghdad is shiia stronghold and the guys coming down towards them is sunni. Instead of being a National Sovereign army and thats another problem weve created in iraq. It then becomes what do we do, you like the idea of the drones, specialops on the ground that provide guidance but not fight. The afghan model. Special forces in there with the Northern Alliance calling in air support and providing the target designation for the aircraft above. It was very effective. We can do that again, but once again youve got to make the decision youve got to put american troops out there in harms way. Because were saying special ops doesnt mean they are not vulnerable. Boots on the ground, always vulnerable. The last concern, the embassy in baghdad. They are bringing in marines. No tougher fighting men and women than they. When do you evacuate . Should it be done already . Will they be able to do it quickly enough . Whats your sense. They are in the process of drawing down the embassy so by the time decision is made to evacuate the embassy, only a few people there, just the essential. Other people have been moved to jordan, safer areas of iraq so there will be less numbers and when the decision is made they will do it before they are facing an innent threat. I dont say that baghdad is under imminent threat right now so i dont see the evacuation of the embassy in the next day or so. Its interesting that part of the threat is articulated as, well, they are not going to overtake baghdad, this isis militia, but they can make life tough, bombs and stuff like that, like that isnt going on right now. Thats the reality anyway . Its been going on for years, the sunni shiia divide again. Inside the city of baghdad you actually find neighborhoods that are mixed, and you dont see this sunni shiia animosity we see in the rest of the country. Rest of the country can be broken down into enclaves. Baghdad, different story. Theres a whole political side to this as well as why the sunnis are joining isis and why the military in iraq is in such disarray. Well get to that discussion later this morning because it goes to the accountability of u. S. Political decisions but that was not your problem, Rick Francona. Thanks so much for the perspective this morning. This is just one of the stories were going to follow us a start your new day. Theres other beg headlines for that. Lets go to that. So true. New headlines. New details emerging on General Motors newest recall, 3. 4 million additional vehicles recalled over a faulty ignition switch. The problem is different from an earlier defect that led to 13 deaths which the company knew about for over a decade before issuing a recall in february. This morning gm says the same engineer signed off on both designs. Mondays recall brings gms total to a staggering 20 million vehicles recalled this year. And it wasnt pretty, oh, no, it wasnt, but new york mayor bill de blasio appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live to make good on that stanley cup wager after who, the l. A. Kings beat, what team was that again, the rangers . Yeah, thats what happened. De blasio sang a round of Randy Newmans iconic love song to the city of angels, i love l. A. That was the incredible 86th minute header. Oh, man. That gave team usa a win over arch rival ghana in the world cup, 21. Scored by 21yearold john brooks, the man of the match. Hard fought, really fana was largely dominant in every category that mattered except score. Team usa now faces portugal sunday. They have a lot of injuries. You saw that guy grabbing a hamstring. Got it in the chin. Let break it down. Greg lalas, editorinchief of mlssoccer. Com. Getting hit in the smoosh is expected like this. The hamstring could be a big problem, but you said you were 50 50 yesterday. It was a huge game, to win it and they did. I mean, i think when we look back at this game youre going to say great result, not a great performance in the end. But ultimately youre at the world cup and the result is all that matters in this case. Get your three point and build up your confidence and get a couple of goals and have some new stars arrive on the scene like john brooks and thats all you really need. As long as the outcome is good, right . A little bit like that. Greg, yesterday you said the two star players you were prognosticating would be Clint Dempsey. Yeah. And michael bradley. You were 1 for 2. Bradley had a good game. I want to parse this a little bit. What are we going to talk about and Clint Dempsey, of course, scores an amazing goal in 29 seconds to get a goal and gets the u. S. On the scoreboard to lift everybody up and makes them feel like they can get this done. Michael bradley, arguably the best player the United States has right now, he didnt have a great game so were talking about him as the u. S. Gets this result despite their best player not playing his usual game. Yeah. You make an interesting point. Watching, it boy, the ghana guys are like running all over them, getting tons of shots on goal, but you were explaining that this was about the u. S. Defense figuring out how to get small and tight, almost like a predent d in football because they knew they would take a lot of attacks and you believe they got the job done. Especially after that early goal. I dont think the u. S. Expected to get that early goal and in some ways they werent sure what to do next in that case and naturally when you get that other goal the other people will come at you hard. Talk about john brooks. Love this story. Amazing story. 21yearold kid born in germany to an american serviceman over there, an heres a guy who played for the u. S. Youth team and the under 20 team a little bit when he came on the radar nond you said is he going to play for germany or the United States. He had to make a decision. A Little German coach for the United States, a little bit of cajoling and hes there and gets an amazing came. Didnt even start the came. Kim on as a sub. I want to look like the pike here a little bit because they do face portugal. Portugal coming off a loss to germany so they might be a little bruised a little bit but you talked about those injuries. How are you feeling about this because this was soccer juggernaut they are now facing . Yes. Its a wounded dog right now, as a colleague of mine put it because you can either say you go down and put this doug out of its misery as soon as possible in this came or you get a dog thats going to fight back really, really hard so they have two major injuries in their game against germany and also a red card for this incredibly insane headbutt that this guy did so hell be missing those games, so they will be, you know they wont have all their best players out there, portugal wont, so the u. S. Has an advantage and at the same time their backs are against the wall so they could come very, very hard against the americans. The u. S. Has to win also though coming into this. They need to build on this momentum, otherwise it will feed this feeling that they are not exactly. The New York Times described it began with the magical and it ended with the miraculous. Thats why they are the New York Times. Why they get paid the big bucks to write things like that. Do they need to get a win . If you look at the math they probably dont but i agree. This is one where you need to step on the accelerator now and really go after this one. Well be talking about john brooks again. Now in the starting lineup . I think arguably he will, not necessarily because of the way he played because the guy he came in for ended up with a hamstring injury. We dont know what his status is tough when you hurt the hamstrings. Tough to come back. Look forward to having you back. Thanks very much. Coming up on new day, on the trail of twin tornadoes. Powerful, powerful storms tearing through the upper midwest, including catastrophic tornado touchdowns in nebraska, and these rare twin twisters. More than half of the northeastern town of pilger gone. Two people are dead, including a 5yearold child. More than a dozen others have been injured. President obama is mulling options for combating isis militant in iraq. He met with National Security officials late last night. Hundreds of american troops are being sent to the iraq region as isis keeps expanding its footprint. More on the latest in that situation as it continues to change. Reporter absolutely. Late yesterday the ambassador vecroft met with Nuri Al Maliki, the Prime Minister. The Prime Ministers Office said the meeting was productive and how to tackle terrorism in the region but also the iraqi Prime Minister was looking for more support and more help from the United States, an indication that the iraqis do feel that they want the United States to step in in rock in a bigger way. At the same time were hearing this morning 45 mintz drive northeast of the city, the down of bakuba, clashes and fights going on in the city there. Iraqi tv, the state tv says the government is in control of a number of neighborhoods in that city but an eyewitness who talked to cnn said isis has managed to get into the city and into the Police Station and take all the weapons from the Police Station so before leaving it so the battle there very close to baghdad. Seems still to be very fluid. Certainly very concerning for u. S. Officials who are right now what to do, what level of support they will be providing. Nic robertson, thanks so much. President obama is deciding right now whether or not to provide military support to a struggling iraqi government. The president has committed about 275 military personnel equipped for combat to help protect the embassy in iraq. Thats just so far. Joining us now to discuss the path forward, what the United States should do, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee mike rogers, the congressman from michigan. Mr. Chairman, great to see you this morning. Great to see you and congratulations on your oneyear anniversary of your show. Thank you very much, mr. Chairman. Thats very kind of you. You have been talking you, of course, are one of the point people that Everyone Wants to hear from when issues like this arise. I want to clarify a couple of points with you. Do you think at this point what you have seen, what you have heard, that u. S. Air strikes are necessary . I do think you have to have a coordinated effort to slow down the momentum and turn the momentum of what is an al qaeda army on the rise and on the move. And so you have two places they operate, both syria and in Eastern Syria and western iraq, and they are holding ground. They are gaining weapons. They are amassing cache. All of that is very, very dangerous so i do believe air strikes should be part of any option laid on the table in conjunction of pushing forward iraqi troops back into this fight. Weve also seen you say you do not support boots on the ground, but a big question right now is how do you successfully target isis with air strikes without boots on the ground, without eyes on the ground because of who isis operates . Well, and i think we should be very, very careful here, an ive heard this on the news, that the president is flipflopping on this boots on the ground thing. We need a functioning number of troops for support in force protection, meaning protecting the embassy. When people say troops boots on the ground, they are talking about big footprint, the fourth infantry division, the 101st infantry division, those kinds of things. Thats not what were talking about. Not talking about largescale troop unit. Youll need trainers on the ground, intelligence officials on the ground to help guide the fight, provide some command and control, provide some training for certain forces on the ground and to help best coordinate target packages meaning where do they strike and when they strike to the most impact to slow down this al qaeda army on the move . Not a big footprint. How many military personnel do you think is needed for that to be accomplished . I wouldnt even hesitate i would hesitate to even guess at that, kate, but its it needs to be robust enough to help the iraqis move forward, but, again, this is not a big target footprint we want to put on the ground or that the United States would want to put on the ground, at least way i would support it. I dont think the president has made any decision. The first movements i support. They actually put troops on the ground to protect the embassy. Thats important. Youve got to have that happen, and that i think has happened, and so the next step is what does that package look like, and i think those discussions are ongoing now. Ive had some discussions with the white house National Security Council Staff and i think, you know, a plan is coming together, i do believe that. Can you give us any inkling of what that plan is . Again, i hate to get too far. I dont think any decision has whats your advice to the white house . Well, listen, i would like to see two things. We need to very aggressively reengage the arab league. I would not go into negotiations with iran on this. Iran still has american blood on its hands from iraq and its making our arab League Partners very, very nervous about this, reengage the arab league with a twopronged strategy. You need to disrupt their activity in Eastern Syria and change the momentum in iraq and have a political discussion all at the same time. Maliki really probably needs to go. We need somebody of serious stature to be able to tell him that so that they can get a unity government to start taking away this sunni shiia problem that is developing or is there already. Again, we have an al qaedaarmed insurgency group thats on the rise. That is a problem for iraq. Its also a problem for the United States and europe. Thousands of people we believe with western passports are on the ground getting further radicalized, trained and will go back home. Thats dangerous for the United States in the light that there has been an american who was used in a suicide bombing in Eastern Syria. Ive heard you raise this concern about supporters of of isis, of al qaeda with u. S. And western passports. Are you confident that the United States has eyes on these people because the question is wouldnt they be easy to track if they tried to reenter the United States . No, not necessarily, and so, again, we have some understanding of who they are. We dont have a complete understanding of who they are. 19 People Killed 3,000 of americans. If you track half of them or three quarters of them or 80 of them, that leaves a significant problem. Thats why this rising problem, and weve known about this problem for two and a half years now is so concerning for those of us who are worried about National Security. Thats why you have to have an aggressive disruptive campaign. Stop the flow of those people into both syria and iraq and then make sure that we can try to figure out who they are so when they come back we can stop them and take them into custody if thats what we need to do. We have heard some of your colleagues say that they believe syria and iraq with whats going on now will likely become the next staging ground for the next 9 11, but you do wonder is that bluster, or do you see real evidence of that, because doesnt it also seem right now these guys are busy enough fighting and trying to kill each other over middle east ground . Well, Something Interesting happened here recently, so zawahri, the head of al qaeda as we know it, the head leadership, isis was in Eastern Syria, and they were fighting with al nusra, another al qaeda affiliate. An argument then, zawahri, the leader, who replaced osama bin laden, wanted isis to only fight in iraq because isis was talking about external operations, meaning western, europe and the United States, so think about that. They have already are h those discussions and understand the value of western passport holders, weaponized very, very well now. Unfortunately, they have a lot of money so Something Interesting happened. Now they went back and are fighting in iraq. It doesnt mean that they have lost their interest in these external operations. They are very aggressive, and they are brutal. They have already issued sharia law statement in mosul and tikrit and other towns and done summary executions, dragged people in the street and shot them in the back of the head. Really important to understand who we are dealing with. These are very bad characters. They will not stop until they have their version of a caliphate and they are willing to commit acts of violence in order to do it, including terrorist operations outside of syria and outside of iraq. Thats what is so concerning. Here is the hangup. You have an American Public that has no appetite for another getting involved with another Major Military option and getting involved with another war. The United States has left tons of equipment in iraq, spent billions of dollars training the iraqi army, paid for it with countless lives as well, but the troops, they have left their tanks and put down their equipment and they have walked away. They dont have the commitment to this fight that the United States wants them to have. How is anything short of a surge which no one has an appetite of, how is there any possibility for having a real imsnakt. You can, and we can go back and debate. I disagreed with the decision for a unilateral pullout of iraq, that it was premature and dangerous and was going to cause problems, certainly has, but heres where we find ourselves. Now this people want to say this is a sectarian civil war. This is show youia versus sunni. Theres some of that clearly, but this is an al qaeda affiliate who is using violence to get its gains and has already talked about external operations. Mr. Chairman, how do you get this al qaeda affiliate to be back on its heels when what the problem is in iraq is they need political reconciliation and that does not seem like a likely outsome when you still have Prime Minister maliki in power and you have decades, century old tensions between these two religious sects. If you ever want reconciliation you need breathing space. Right now you have al qaeda knock on the door of baghdad. I mean, this is as bad as you can ever see it. You have to disrupt their ability to continue operations, that is isis, the Al Qaeda Affiliated group. If we dont disrupt that and give breathing space youll never get to the next question which is how do we make sure to have political reconciliation between sunni and shiia factions in iraq and the kurds in the north as well. If you dont do the first part, youll never get to the second part, and if you look back, we have a great history here, kate. Look what happened in afghanistan. Everybody pulled out and said thats it, were done. The taliban took over. It fostered al qaeda, a safe haven like weve never seen. 9 11 happens, and so what we see here is all of the recipe is there. All of the ingredients are going in the stew and we see it happening on our watch. Heres the trick or heres the question, not the trick, is how can you disrupt it long enough to have iraq do that political reconciliation and get their army back in the fight . Thats going to take a little bit of investment. Its not going to take huge military presence. Its not going to take huge amount of sorties from an Aircraft Carrier every single day. It will take some of that to change the momentum but its in our National Security interest. Imagine a safe haven the size of indiana, thats what they have right now. Meaning they can train and recruit and finance. Some estimates as much as 1 billion in both cash and gold. That means they are well financed to do any operation in the world that they want to do. That is what is so concerning. We have to find a way to disrupt that activity very, very quickly, and this isnt a monthlong project or two months or six month. We need to start that now, and you can also have political reconciliation going all at the same time. My final quick question. Real quick button. With all of this in mind and everything you know that you cannot talk about publicly is it more likely than not that the u. S. Will conduct air strikes . Well, i would i dont even want to say that. Theres options being talked about that will provide for disruption and ill support those options as long as they give breathing space to any political reconciliation which means you have to get the Iraqi Military back in the fight, and that may include u. S. Air strikes to break the momentum of the al qaeda army. Congressman mike rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, mr. Chairman, always great to have you, thank you for your time. Thanks, kate. You dont have to be head of the Intelligence Committee to know that iraq has been in trouble for a long time. At least theres some urgency in washington at this point. Lets take a quick break here on new day. Rare twin tornadoes. They touched down practically next to each other and almost leveled a town in nebraska. What was it like to be this close . Were going to talk to Storm Chasers who were right there, and they tell some Amazing Stories of how people survive. Okay buddy, whats your favorite kind of cheerios . Honey nut. But. Chocolate is my other favorite. But Apple Cinnamon is my favorite too. And fruity. Oh yeah, and frosted okay, but. Whats youre most favorite of all . Hmm. The kind i have with you. Me too. Where has that happened before . Thats the town. Look at the little vortices chasing in there. Thats crazy. Keep moving fast. They are merging. They are going to merge. A massive tornado. Count your blessings this morning that that is not your backyard. A devastating storm system turned deadly. At least two lives lost, multiple injuries. The headlines, twin tornadoes, never see this. One grew out of the other. Luckily they took the same path and could have gone Different Directions rather than doubling down like they did. We have Storm Chasers joining us this morning who arrived at pilger the same time as this storm. This is a phenomenal thing to see inters of the science, but lets start with what matters, the people. How are they doing on the ground there, gentlemen, and tell us about the family that you encountered firsthand. Want to start off, brian . Yesterday we arrived moments after the tornado went through the town, and both our Immediate Reactions was to start helping people, immediately started going through businesses, making sure everyone was okay. Both myself and my chase partner, were photojournalists as well so we also had to get the story out there so the world will mow what happened. We just arrived on site here so we dont know whats going on right now. It is our understanding that the town was evacuated last night. The storm is the one that encountered a family last night. Tell us about that. These small towns often get hit even harder because they dont have the resources. Its tougher to recover. What did you find with this family last night . Okay. Well, when we got in, we were probably about five minutes behind the main tornado that hit pilger. It was encountering an intensification phase probably ef3, ef4 damage right through the center of town. When rearrived on the scene, me and brian split up. Our first Immediate Reaction was that the photos can wait. We need to get in town and check on people and make sure that they are okay. I went straight into the heart of the main damage area near the Grain Elevators and went to a home where there was a family that was trapped in a basement. A lady named jody and her children, cameron and samantha, 11 and 9 years old approximately and another gentleman helping them out of the basement. I went and helped jody and the kids out of basement. I held them there while they had a good cry because they just lost everything they own. Their house was wiped out. Their cars were gone. Their dog was gone, the kids were crying for their dog. It was absolutely heartbreaking, and i just held on to them until they could calm down a little bit. They got caught off guard by the tornado, not wearing socks, shoes or anything, and i helped the other gentleman that was there carry jody out to the pavement where there wasnt any debris. Someone had come through and swept a path to the vehicle and then i went back and the other gentleman grabbed samantha and i grabbed cameron who is a good 180 something pounds, big kid, threw him on my back and i carried him out of rubble to safety to where he could be placed in the vehicle and not have to walk across glass, nails, the usual tornadic debris. That was a good thing you did. We love to see the pictures and understand the devastation and how it happened, amazing you caught it on tape but to help the people involved thats what its all about. Thanks for doing that, storm. Safe to say you guys have never seen anything like this before in terms of this chute tornado coming down and making a twin terror right . Let me just explain first that as journalists, you know, we have a responsibility to the public to convey the story, but we also have a responsibility at times where we have to put down our cameras and we have to step up as human beings and help the people that are affected by these natural disasters. I put my cameras down because i was needed more as a First Responder and as a human being that inwas as a photojournalist and as soon as i made sure that that family was okay and Emergency Personnel were in the area and helping other victims it was at that time that i felt comfortable picking my equipment back up and doing my other job. People have to come first and something we can forget sometimes as journalists but tantamount we remember that and in these intense situations that we put our cameras down and that we help when were needed. Now in terms of the atmosphere storm, let me tell you the phenomenon that occurred here. Great to hear that and saw it in the pictures about what the tornadoes are. That part of the story becomes pretty obvious but understanding what happened with the people on the ground, that matters. Thank you for making it a prior. Its great to see you and brandon are safe, and we look forward to what you find there on the ground. Let us know how people are doing and what they need, okay . Okay, we will. We can certainly do that. All right. Take care. Be safe. So you have the tornado, twin tornado that hit that town. Were going to be hearing more and more about what they are going to need to do to recover. Thats just one story this morning. Well also go live to baghdad. We have Anderson Cooper there so lets get right to everything right now. Keep moving fast. I got it. The rare double tornado, just part of the Destructive Force in northeast nebraska. Whole blocks of houses are destroyed. They are merging. They are going to merge as the fighting rages on in iraq mass massacres, you have to stop that. We cannot allowed the worlds Worst Terrorist Group to get a base of support in a failed nation. Dempsey the fifth fastest goal in world cup history. Usa determination, the fight, the mentality, those things carried us through. Good morning and welcome back to new day. Iraq is descending into chaos as the world waits for president obama to decide how to handle the threat from isis. What to do from the american side. The president met last night with National Security officials to consider his options. For now hundreds of american troops are heading to baghdad to help protect american interests with more personnel and resources awaiting orders on sta standby, still with the promise from president obama no combat troops will be put on the ground. Anderson cooper is live on the ground in baghdad with much more. Anderson, Nic Robertson earlier was talking about how isis continues to gain ground. They are kind of isolating and consolidating their forces. What are you hearing that they are doing on the ground . Whats the very latest . Reporter without a doubt, a city where tension is high and so sun certainty. There are checkpoints throughout this city. A lot of very wary security personnel unsure whats happening some even 50 miles or so outside of town. I mean, the big news yesterday was that the city of talifar, a city of some 200,000 people fell to isis forces. They are said to be still be fighting there on the outskirts. Again, it raises real questions about the capabilities of the Iraqi Military in terms of actually addressing this threat. Thats why youve seen tens of thousands of volunteers, young men, old men heeding the call of religious leaders here to to join the fight, to take up arms, but, again, their capabilities are in question of exactly how they will be used to try to supplement Iraqi Military forces. Again, its not really a question of numbers. The iraqi the Iraqi Security personnel, Iraqi Military, some 250,000 troops that outnumbers, you know, isis and other forces, you know, 50, 1001. Its really a question of morale and fighting capabilities on the ground. Right now weve seen a number of setbacks for iraqi forces. They are fighting back. Weve seen videos released by the Iraqi Military of air strikes, Helicopter Air strikes as well as battles on the ground, but actual information about a lot of these fights, very hard to confirm independently. But its certainly a day of high tension here. Seems like a city once again filled with rumors and fear. Obviously the big talk from the u. S. Side is u. S. Personnel, assets moving into the region, moving into baghdad. Have you seen any evidence of all of that happening . Reporter well, i mean, its very careful to point out as you have been that this is not a combat role for the United States. Right. Reporter theres some 275 u. S. Military personnel, some in the region, some on the ground at the u. S. Embassy. The u. S. Embassy is a huge sprawling complex, really a city within a city here in baghdad. Thousands of employees, from 5,000 employees there, so 275 military forces capable of combat if it comes to that to protect the embassy to try to evacuate u. S. Personnel if it comes to that. Some u. S. Personnel are leaving baghdad, going to areas south of iraq, also in kurdish areas and also going into jordan, but while these those marines and other u. S. Forces are coming in, they are lessening the number of u. S. Personnel at embassy. Thats the first time they have done that since the initial invasion back in 2003. Anderson, what are you hearing from the ground . Do the folks here talk and say that the u. S. Needs to come in, that u. S. Air strikes are necessary in order to fight isis because its as youre pointing out the iraqi the iraqi army, their capability at least right now is in question. Do they see are they calling for the United States to help . Reporter look, it really depends who you talk to. Theres certainly a lot of pride here. Theres certainly a belief among a lot of people. You know, you talk to these volunteers and see these volunteers showing up in huge numbers really without in many cases without military training. They say they are willing to fight and willing to die and to fight isis and they say they are capable of taking care, a great sense and groundswell of pride that they can do something. Others that you talk to will say that they are afraid, that they want to see some sort of greater involvement from the United States whether its air strikes or drone strikes. You dont hear a lot of people talking about certainly boots on the ground, and thats certainly not something that the United States seems to be considering in any kind of large numbers. But, you know, the concern here in the call by religious leaders to take up arms, to defend the country is that this basically becomes a sectarian bloodbath, the divide that has existed here for a long time between sunni groups and shiia only gets wider, and thats something that that the government here really needs to try to address. Thats something that the United States, britain, basically all outside powers are saying. Whether or not the government here is actually willing to do that, to reach out to the sunni groups now aligning themselves with isis, even though they may not agree with the tactics or even like this force, they dont feel they have many alternatives. They dont feel that that the Central Government here in baghdad has really been meeting their needs in any real way over the last several years. Anderson, thank you so much. Acooper on the ground in baghdad. Hell continue reporting there. Much more of andersons reporting tomorrow night on a c360. Chris . As anderson is pointing out, the situation in iraq isnt just about the military. It will take more than that to solve it. Its also about the political as he was saying. Its worth talking about how we got here in the first place because when we talk about the political trouble, im not talking about iraq but in the United States, with our government. Theres too much blaming going on already, and its going to frustrate what happens next. Our next guest has been called the architect of the iraq invasion originally. Hes now here to help us clear up confusion thats going on down in washington about how we got here, why the situation is what it is and what happens when we go forward. He is former deputy secretary of defense mr. Paul wolfowitz. Now a scholar at the American Enterprise institute. Sir, very good to have you with us. As i was just saying there, were doing it again. They are pointing fingers. The left and the right. Whose fault is this . The republicans are spending a lot of time blaming the Current Administration for this situation. Most notably Speaker Boehner says president obama is taking a nap as mosul falls because he pulled us out of there and its a mistake. Isnt it fair, mr. Wolfowitz, that if the president were taking a nap it would be on the sofa, the status of arms agreement that the Bush Administration put in place there of taking troops out . I thought you said we should i was not the architect of the war. If i were the architect it would have been handled very differently. You say we should be talking about what needs to be done and youre going back into this discussion about who is blaming whom. Look, we are in a very urgent emergency situation. To portray it as some obscure thing between shiia and sunnis that americans couldnt tell you which is which is misleading. The real problem is this is al qaeda and Al Qaedaaffiliated groups. Some of them are worse than al qaeda. They have already made it clear their intent to attack the u. S. And europe. They have been recruiting fighters to do that in the u. S. And europe, and we have got to beat them. But mr. Wolfowitz weve got to look for allies everywhere. Youre right, but you have to start with alice in your own government, and it is irresponsible to allow the fingerpointing to go on because its frustrating dealing with the urgency. You cant have the republicans who were part of the decision to put us there, who were part what you need is leadership leadership is about accou accountability. Go ahead. Youre not answering the question. Speaker boehner cant say this administration is the cause of the current problems in iraq, is that a fair statement . Chris, every time one of these things happens if its the republicans in power, the democrats blame. If its democrats in power, the republicans blame. What we really need now from the president is a clear statement of american interests, of American Action and rallying people to move forward and then these blamers on either side will be irrelevant. Thats what is needed right now. You and i are going to sit here and tell Speaker Boehner to shut up. Yes. Whether its useful or not useful, but what is most needed is for the support of the yates to take a strong position, and, unfortunately he hasnt done that. Its hard for him to be strong when hes getting attacked by his own. How can the United States present chris, its hard for him listen, you know, when jimmy carter encountered the soviet invasion of afghanistan, he said, you know, i got it wrong. When george bush realized his strategy in iraq was failing, he said i got it wrong. The president has got to stop saying al qaeda is on the road to defeat. Hes got to say things are worse than i thought. Here is what were going to do. The blame game would stop immediately. Where is the contrition, you know, if you want to use that word. Where is the Bush Administration saying we got it wrong . Theres a bunch of defenders saying we had to go in, s sadda husain was dangerous and all of this is counterproductive because you cant put forward a unified front. You canhave to demonstrate t everyone that the United States is serious. When the first president bush had the first invasion of kuwait, took a kind of position that everyone in the region knew he was serious, thats number one whats needed. Number two, there are many people in that part of the world, including many sunnis, who do not want to see these s. O. B. S win, and we should be working with all of them. Unfortunately, maliki is a big part of the problem but we cant solve the maliki problem right now. We need to work with the kurds. The kurds have real fighters. They really need support. We have not supported them well in the last year or two. We need to work with the moderate sunni rebels in syria who as far as i can tell are the only people actually fighting isis and they have no american support and they have been pleading for it for three years. Any of those things, or those three things taken together would be a demonstration of seriousness that i believe would begin to transform the situation. We are still a superpower. This is a mob with guns that has scared the heck out of people and not surprisingly you wouldnt want to stick around and fight them when you know anyone they capture is going to be decapitated. Thats their technique but its not the way you win a war. The United States has capability tone able the iraqi army to get back on its feet and we should be using it. Not american troops but american intelligence, american air support. And that seems to be in the offing by the administration, all of that is on the table. They are trying to come up with a plan but also trying to defend themselves from these political attacks and im trying to get you to provide wisdom on it since you understand how we got here. I dont know why you are reluctant to do that or why you ignore it. The reason we cant help them is because you disbanded. And the reason you cant lets just start with something. You said something thats completely wrong. The iraqi army was saddams army was a useless army. It was infiltrated by the very people who are running the insurgency. We took much too long in my view, too much too long to build an iraqi army capable of counterinsurgency operations. We built it. That was one of petraeus major achievements and maliki was ready to take on Muqtada Al Sadr with some american help. Thats the army falling apart. It wasnt really ready to stand on its own feet, thats true, but it was capable of doing significant successful operations with americans at its pack. You dont think that paul bremer disassembling the army and allowing and displacing all these sunnis who have become since then people with great u. S. Military training now fighting with our enemy, you dont think that was a mistake . First of all, these were not people with u. S. Military training. These were people with saddams military training. And ours as well, when we trained them to fight against iran. That was u. S. Military help in the region. We did not train them to fight against iran. They fought on their own. Look, we can keep going over the history. I think the way that decision was implemented was a big mistake, but that iraqi army was an instrument of terror for twothirds of the iraqi population. It was infiltrated by the very same people who are running the insurgency. We didnt create the insurgency. Saddams muhabarab created the insurgency and when we tried to bring back one brigade of the army in fallujah, it went over to the other army. We should have handled it differently, yes, but the most important mistake is if you disband the army you better build a new one fast and it took us five years, that was too long. Do you think if you can redo one thing other than not going in there in the first place that taking the american Standing Army out, doing the s. O. F. A. With maliki when the Bush Administration did that, was that a mistake . Should you have used the leverage harder so there were more people on the ground there now . Look, i think we should have found a way to keep an american presence in iraq. I think some of that responsibility youre trying to lay it all off on bush. He made the agreement. He made the agreement. It could it was not final. It could have been renegotiated. Still an agreement. You seem insistent on this blame game. Because its being played. I would like to do nothing more than anything for the past and deal with the presence because of its urgency. If you i wanted your wisdom and your perspective. Sorry to cut you off. I wanted your wisdom ain order o correct the record. If you want my wisdom such as it is, i think we could have kept substantial, not a huge american presence, not a combat presence, but the kind of support that would have kept maliki better under control, that would have given the iraqi army better ability to function. I dont think it was set up well for obama when he came in, but i dont think he operated off of that base very effectively. Look, Dwight Eisenhower became president in 1953 having campaigned to end the war in korea, which he did immediately. He did not remove american troops from korea. If he had done so, korea wasnt ready to stand on its own feet for another 10 or 20 years and even then not very well but today its a miracle story. Look, i think this situation can be recovered. The best way to end the socalled blame game is for the president to pull the chestnuts out of the fire here and say go blame all you like, i have succeeded. What people say in the end about this is not going to be about what happened five years ago or ten years ago or 20 years ago. Its going to be about how this situation comes out, and it is an emergency for the United States. It is al qaeda. Its not just sunni and shiia, and we need to do everything we can within reason and that puts some limits on what we can do. Hopefully your words are heed and the parties down there come together to move forward instead of just pointing fingers. Thank you for the perspective. Sorry to cut you off. Its more about the satellite connection than it is my intentions, but thank you for joining us, mr. Wolfowitz. Appreciate it. Youre very welcome. Kate. Coming up next on new day, the United States is on fire after that thrilling win over ghana in their opening world cup match. How far can team usa go . John brooks with the goal to help defeat ghana 21 in the world cup opener. The more historic moment was the goal by clint demsey in the first 30 second of the game. Joining us for a special edition of the Bleacher Report is cobi jones. What is it, three world cups you have . Thats correct . And still such a young man celebrating a birthday yesterday. Got a great gift yesterday. How about that. Have you are ever seen anything like that, 29 seconds in . That was absolutely incredible. Clint dempsey stepped up and right off the bat it threw everyone for a big shock, the players from ghana for a big shock as well. Thats not how they expected the u. S. Players to come out in the match. How important is that early on to set a tone . To get on the board early, changed the dynamic of the game because it allowed the u. S. To play for free. Going into this game they wanted at least a point and then to be up a goal and it gives them the breathing room and then the knock on them is can the u. S. Have the firepower to deal with the big teams in the death group as its called and to score in historymaking fashion, right . It was incredible. Do they have the depth. One thing Jurgen Klinsmann has done is tapped into mls and thats helped Clint Dempsey at so thele and the assist on the gamewinning goal comes from graham zusi, sporting kansas city, defending champions and puts that header right on john brooks, amazing. What do you think of team usa Going Forward . Going in the coach has infamously said were not going to be able to win this thing which is kind of amazing that he would say that, some were saying maybe he was just trying to lower expectations. Team usa, are they a winning team . I think Jurgen Klinsmann was lowering expectations. We saw in the leadup matches they got better and better with each game and then its leading right into the world cup and this is exactly where you want to peak at the right time, especially, you know, a little bit during this group stage because you need to get out of the group and then once that happens, you know, its just one game at any time and you can beat any team. Whats it like being on that field . Youve done it more than anybody obviously. Yeah. But the pressures of being on the world stage, everyone is watching and everyone from the u. S. Is cheering for you. Talk about the pressure. Thats part of the excitement. Being on the field and representing your country and knowing that everybody is watching. Not a nervousness in that aspect. Its more like you have the support of the country behind you. Especially i guarantee it when the guys looking at it, see all the crowds back here in the states screaming for them. People are going crazy for world cup soccer in america. The sport is growing by leaps and bounds. Great seeing it. This really does help. This is the sport of the millennials. You look like you could get out there and show how things is done. I did give jurgen a call. With all the hamstring injuries. Put me in, coach. Yeah, exactly. Dealing with a few injuries and thats a concern Going Forward. They face portugal on. Under thats going to be a big match. Its a mustwin for portugal and if the u. S. Can pick up three points on this one they are in great position to get through. Thanks for chatting soccer with us. Cobi jones, legend in his own right. Three world cup outings. Not a bad outing. Still the coolest guy weve ever had on the team. I said it. I like it. Nice to see you. Coming up next on new day, coming up on inside politics, the nhl finals gets political. Want to take it from the top . Rates for us and them. Now thats progressive. Call or click today. Welcome back. Lets get to inside politics on new day with john king. Boy, iraq is a hot topic. A lot of fingerpointing going on and a lot of really convenient remembering of the past, john . A lot of thats a good way to put. It enjoyed your interview with secretary wolfowitz. Iraq is the dominant subject so lets start as we go inside politics and we share their reporting and insights. A lot of experience covering the white house. Has to be incredibly frustrating and seer carouse for this sober for this man who made his name in politics by opposing the iraq war by saying we need to get out and hes sending in some u. S. Troops, lets be clear, 275 points, the initial to protect the u. S. Embassy in baghdad but part of the conversation has to be once you start can you stop . What happens next . Thats exactly right, and this is a very frustrating situation for the president. This was the war that was stupid in his crew and hes own a legacy of the Bush Administration having to explain his handling of the legacy of the Bush Administration to the republicans who are now attacking him for mishandling it. Very much on his mind and talking with National Security officials and then last night gets home and goes straight into the situation room meeting with top officials, but the question is what comes next beyond this. There are warships positioned. There are options being considered but an air strike, if thats the route they choose to go is very complicated and requires neighboring partners and requires to know whats the end game. Whats the end game. You mentioned neighboring partners, even conversations about having conversations with iran, whether you can have at least have cooperation here. This is a new issue for this president , but i remember taking a trip with george w. Bush. It was eight years ago to baghdad, a secret trip on air force one to talk to Nuri Al Maliki who was relatively new as the Prime Minister and they said the president needed to look him in the eye, the last president , look in the eye and say you have to work harder to solve the problems between the shiia and sunnis and kurds. This is not a move. Is there any expectation that maliki will do anything, any american president . This is groundhog day with a lot of blood. The politics of this are very depressing. Bungled our way into that war and out of war and now we have parties arguing over whose bungle is biggest instead of working our way out of this. The thing with iran, we have to have some kind of quiet diplomacy working with our allies and enemies. Not in anybodys interest. Not in the saudis or iranians for this to spiral out of control but you cant work silently, cant do silent diplomacy when the secretary of state is talking publicly about it. I mentioned the irony for president obama, the difficulty because he so made his name oppose the iraq war. Tonight on cnn a live town hall at 5 00 eastern and replaying at 9 00 eastern with the former secretary of state Hillary Clinton. Remember, she lost to barack obama back in 2008 because he used her vote for the iraq war against her so we may get some more thoughts for her. Christiane amanpour will moderate that town hall. Keep an eye on that and as we remember secretary clinton has been having a big book rollout and talking a little bit more, listen to her with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation saying she doesnt like to do this much but why democrats think by far she is the best candidate. A lot of the women, senators, we have a couple of women governors, im talking the democratic side, so we have a good bench, so to speak, but they havent gone through the fire, and part of the reason why theres a big drumming beat for me to run is because ive done it. They see me as someone who just has to make up her mind and get going. Just make up her mind and get going. I think the big decision she has to stop running. The question is do you stop for any reason down the road. To that point history says after a twoterm president the other party usually wins, george h. W. Bush succeeded Ronald Reagan but after bill clinton the republicans came n. After barack obama the republicans should come in. Is that why democrats think shes the only one . I dont know why she thinks shes the only one. I dont think its a good thing for the Democratic Party to think shes the only one. She will need competition to be a better candidate. Shes still running the 08 campaign when she talks about the fact that im the only one who has seen the fire, sounds like the 3 00 a. M. Phone call, im the inevitable, im the most experienced and this should be my nomination. Not the signal you should be sending to the American People. She had made a few gaffes. Not immune to gaffs, most seasoned politician, made some gaffes in 2008 as ron notes. What do you look for her in these kinds of settings, oneonone interviews as part of the book rollout and sometimes you also get surprised by the questions . As we saw in the past few days, situations that should be soft predictable situations can you prepare for and letting the emotions getting the best of her. Weve seen her test this alternate route which is im going to be a grandmother. Im embracing, you know, my womanhood, and this is not that, and so shes signaling to the female democrats in other own party, stay on the bench and keep it warm. This isnt your time right now. Well all be looking to see whether shes combative in her response or whether shes sort of presents an aura thats of more confident and less defense sglif defenseive. As she tries to push back on domestic problems, World Problems are front and center. Texas governor rick perry stirred up a bit of controversy in recent days by saying he believes being gay is a choose and that if you are gay you can change your way or refuse to act on your behavior. The Texas Governor has faced a lot of criticism for this, but listen to him here. Wont back down but he also says i believe the question of samesex marriage should not be decided in washington but by each state. I dont know the fact is well leave that to the psychologists. I dont necessarily condone that lifestyle. I dont condemn it either. Were all children of god, and the fact is that people will decide where they want to live if washington will respect the tenth amendment. Im actually a little confused by the strategy here. Is he trying to use this as a wedge issue or just answering questions and keeps getting asked about this. The Texas Republican Convention that said texas should never block any law that allows for the reparative therapy which the Psychiatric Community has said is damaging to children. Whats rick perry up to . Im not sure as this was the same issue as it was one or two National Campaign cycles ago. When you look at, you know, republicancontrolled states and sort of the mainstream mentality, the positioning on this has really shifted so it seems to me almost that hes sort of this has gotten away from him and hes trying to catch up. A great point about the arc and the speak of this arc. George w. Bush in 2004, that was the closing paragraph of every speech, one of the reasons he won ohio against john kerry saying i will protect traditional marriage. Is rick perry behind the debate or can he get away with saying i have my views but let each state decide. This issue is certainly moving too fast. You dont want to use the tenth amendment argument, the same argument that the south used to justify slavery. Have to be real clearly here. The Republican Party doesnt want to be on the wrong side of history. Thanks for coming in. As we end, we want to move back to sports and we salute the u. S. World cup victory but we wont go there. First well show you as we get to new york, heres the mayor of new york on jimmy kimmel, look what hes wearing, wearing an l. A. Kings jersey. Make a bet in politics, got to pay the bet and rangers lost to the kings. Lets listen to the marry. Everybody is now happy good for him for paying his bet. Look at the other mayor, the l. A. Mayor, Eric Garcetti who says this is such a great win for l. A. That hes willing to break two of the biggest rules in politics. Two rules in politics. Never ever be pictured with a drink in your hand and never swear, but this is a big [ bleep ] day. Way to go, guys. Product placement there, l. A. Mayor using the joe biden word endorsing a certain kind of beer that i would mention because it would be oh, so wrong. Oh, so wrong. And tasty. A little early for that, mr. Cuomo, a little early. Like happy hour for us, john. Didnt your dad teach you anything, chris cuomo . No beer for breakfast. Were not irish, italian, its wine, the vin sglo dont dance on tv, good thing to live by. Dont dance, dont sing. Lets be honest. When a politician is on tv, they are happy. Dancing or just talking. Coming up next on new day, well talk to the big story coming out of nebraska, twin twisters tearing through the midwest. Well talk to a woman whose home was destroyed. She will give us a firsthand account what have this devastation looked like up close. Plus, i hope you know threatening someone online can be a criminal act, or it can be just free speech. The Supreme Court is going to decide this question. Its very important given where were going with our internet culture. Well break down the stakes and the likely outcomes. Stick with us. Into the air. And polluting the airwaves with lies. Theyre trying to overturn the epas carbon pollution. Standards by lying about electric bills. The same kind of lies they told about limiting smog, soot. And acid rain. Theyre fighting against Energy Efficiency measures that. Would lower your bills. Just to protect their profits. Washington tell polluters to stop the lies and clean up. Their act. They are going to merge its a massive tornado, just massive. Two tornadoes. Two massive wedges rotating almost around each other. Oh, gosh. Its ripping up a whole town. The town of pilger, nebraska is now being compared to a war zone. Deadly tornadoes leaving unimaginable destruction behind. More than half that town destroyed. Joining us is resident becky hoff whose home was destroyed but one of the tornadoes that hit pilger. Good to see you. A sight for sore eyes. I bet this has really rattled you. Tell you the story. Were you in a Convenience Store where you worked. You worked there for some 20 years. What happened when the tornado hit . Weve always been told to go to the coolers. That was the safest place. We had customers that had come in. We locked the doors and had everybody centralized in the meat room which is the middle of the store, and i said once the whistles go, everybody goes to the coolers. Coworkers that work for the farmers coop and the pilger store was watching the back door and they were saying get ready, get ready. Its coming and coming. As pretty soon, tim sweeney, by neighbor and coworker, he also lost his home said go, go, go. We all went to the coolers and we bunkered down in there, and it seemed like forever, but i guess it was only a couple minutes and it was coming down on top of this. But the coolers held together wonderfully. Some of the guys could push up and keep watching the weather but the rest of us pushed open the cooler door. Luckily enough the class only broke on the outside and not the inside so we moved shelves and we could get out and we were out of it. It was over. It was just over. It happened so quickly, even though im sure like you said it felt like forever to happen. What did you see when you emerged from that cooler . What was in front of you when you came out . We had to remove the shelves in the cooler first to get out so i guess the first thing i saw was a sara lee hostess cupcake box and a 24pack of bud light. Well, the bud light stood up, didnt it . And we just kept walking. We just kept Walking Around the store, you know. After youve been there 22 years you know the routes and bounds of the store and the nooks and crannies, and we headed towards the front doors and we got out that way. Were so glad you were able to get out. So quick thinking and followed instructions well. You talk about your home, so your home, how about the rest of your neighborhood . How many homes were destroyed there . If you can see behind me, it sat down here on this corner and it looks like it went straight from the Southwest Corner straight to the northeast corner, wiped out everybody in its path. It took out the farmers coop where i work, the pilger store, my home. I feel so devastated for the people that lost their lives in this. Yeah. But emergency people have been here helping us, and, you know, so far i think were all okay. Its just something i was always told pilger would never be hit by a tornado because were too close to the river. Well, i hate to say this, wrong. We got hit good. Boy, did you. We can sure see the damage here. My whole neighborhood is gone. Your whole neighborhood is gone, and it will take some time to rebuild here. Youve been a longtime resident. Ever seen anything like this, these two twisters coming down . Its such a rarity to see. Well, we got a model here that pilinger is a little town. Were too you have to to die. Were kind of proof of that. I married my husband, a longtime resident of pilger. Married him in 1980. Married for 33 envelope years. Weve ben through a house fire, a bank robbery and you in a tornado, and i guess the good lord just aint ready to get rid of us yet so well just rebuild and well just rebuild and well go from there. Thats right, becky, youre made of tough tough and the community of pilger is as well. Down but not out. The whole nation supports you as you guys begin to rebuild. Thanks for joining us on new day to tell your story. Girl, youre a tough lady. Oh, yeah. I was a good man until i got married, lets put it that way. Still able to smile. Thank you. We send our love and our support to you and the other people of pilger. Its going to be a tough road ahead, chris and kate, but they have that fire in their belly that this wont keep them down. All right. Coming up thanks so much. Coming up next on new day how far is too far in the digital era . The Supreme Court will take up a case whether violent threats on the internet should be considered criminal. Well weigh the pros and cons coming up next. When laquinta. My wife drying herself with the. Egyptian cotton towels. Shower curtain. Defined that whole vacation for her. Dont just visit new york. Visit tripadvisor new york. [ male announcer ] with millions of reviews, a visit to tripadvisor makes any destination better. The Supreme Court has agreed to take up the case asking the question how far can online threats go before they are considered criminal. The case in question, a pennsylvania man who was sent to prison for writing facebook posts about killing his exwife, hurting former coworkers, even taking on a federal agent. But he argues he never intended actual violence. Now its up to the high court, of course, to determine whether people who make violent threats over social media, over the internet, if they must show intent to follow through in order to be prosecuted. Huge questions here. Cnns senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin is joining us, also a former federal prosecutor. This comes up over and over again. Have statutes, have the laws caught up with the digital age. This is an important one. This could have a big impact on everything we do on the internet. Thats right. People are stupid on the internet. True. This guy was really stupid on the internet. And its very easy to spout off on facebook, social media, youre just people are sitting there typing. Everybody knows that comments on works of journalism are often very nasty. Im going to kill that guy, thats terrible. And the question here is, is what this guy wrote about his exwife and others a crime. And how do the juchstices ta it up . It comes to this question of intent which sounds like thats tough for the justices to decide a sweeping rule on. Well, the issue really is how do you judge the intent of the defendant. And the defendant argues here i didnt intend any harm. Subjectively i didnt intend to hurt anybody. This was just rhetoric. The government argues, no, no, your subjective intent is not the standard. What would a reasonable person, what would an objective observer say . Is this really a threat in the eyes of the objective observer, not necessarily what you particularly intended. Look, i like it because i think the internet needs more policing. I think it feeds the worst in it more than it does the best in us. But thats an opinion. The question is whether or not this is worthy of review. It is, as jeffrey explained to me, because its a federal law, so the federal courts, ultimately scotus should look at it. States seem to handle this pretty easily. Why cant they handle this themselves . I think this is an issue that needs to be settled because it comes up a lot. The issue of subjective versus objective, is it your state of mind alone what determines it or what an outside observer would determine as a realistic threat. I think that comes up a lot and i think that is which way does it come out . I think theyll probably go with the objective standard. For one thing its often very hard to determine subject ive. Sure. Its a free speech question. But that cuts both ways. If its free speech, you know, this came up a lot in the 60s during the antiwar protests where you had like theres a famous case where a guy said in substance, you know, if the government sends me to kill, lbj is next for me. That was held to be free speech. That was held to be sort of political rhetoric. But, you know, these cases get hard once you get into the details. When you get into the details thats where i have an issue with it. We look at stories that weve been reporting on here and see the signs were missed. People posting things online. Arent we supposed to say lets flag this guy, that doesnt seem right, this person is threatening to kill something . But you make a really good point because we are now were in this epidemic of School Shootings and were looking for the signals. This is why i think the criminal Justice System needs a lot of humility. We have enough trouble determining what happened in the past, much less predicting whats going to happen in the future. But online postings are certainly evidence. Now, certainly cops can go visit someone who posts stuff thats troubling and talk to them and check them out. Whether they can actually lock them up is a different story. Hes the one bringing the case because he thinks hes got its his free speech thats protected, so well see. This is going to be an interesting case for everybody to watch. Its one of those simple ones, i think, that everyone can wrap their mind around. You know what, the rule is dont be an idiot on the internet. Good standard. Theres your standard. The jails are full now. If he made that a crime, americas economy would be back building prison cells. Coming up on new day, deadly and devastating. Twin twisters, youre looking at them right there in this tiny town in nebraska. Devastation all over. We are live from the scene with the latest. And thanks to a quick start and a very strong finish, team usa won its world cup opener. How far can they go . Were loving it and were talking about it. It is 8 00 in the east. As you saw right there, northeastern nebraska dealing with the grim aftermath of catastrophic storms, including rare twin tornados. The twisters destroying more than half of the town of pilger leaving two people dead at least, including a 5yearold child. Andra, whats the very latest on the ground . Reporter you know, residents here obviously used to seeing tornados, but what they are not used to is seeing two large violent tornados on the ground over an hour with a direct hit right at their town. This morning 50 if not 75 of this town is completely leveled. We just spoke to the sheriff a few minutes ago and he said the entire Business District this morning completely wiped out. The fire station, wiped out. About 40 to 50 homes completely leveled down to the ground. That is what theyre dealing with here this morning. Unfortunately, that seems to be the case many places in the midwest. They were talking about similar stories around wisconsin, iowa and nebraska. Lets move, guys. Reporter an incredible outbreak of deadly tornados tearing through northeastern nebraska monday resulting in a rare and stunning sight. Where has that happened before . Reporter Storm Chasers capturing not one, but two massive tornados side by side on the ground ripping through the town of pilger. Thats the town. Thats the water tower. Reporter the twin tornados surprising even the Storm Chasers who shot the video. Two, possibly three. Ive never seen anything like this. This is just very, very dangerous. This is definitelily the first time ive severe two tornados like that, that violent out of the same storm. Reporter theyll resume searching through the rubble today, but so far no one is unaccounted for. The governor of nebraska issuing a state of emergency, putting the National Guard on standby. The storm carved a path of destruction 25 to 30 miles long, leveling homes, farms and schools over three counties. The small town of pilger the hardest hit. Whole blocks of houses are destroyed. Ive got to see something today i wish id never see. Reporter the tornado power fully churning up the ground below. Look at that, thats crazy. Reporter tossed around by the sheer force of the winds. Estimated up to 200 Miles Per Hour in each tornado. Sirens blaring, warning residents to get underground as the twist eer barrelled through nearby wisner. Keep moving fast reporter another storm chaser got it devastating this farm around wakefield. Theyre merging. Theyre going to merge reporter before merging into one colossal funnel. All the residents here, about 350 of them, did take refuge in a red cross shelter in wisner nearby. They have not been allowed to return here yet this morning. It does seem theyll be allowed to come back this morning and this is the sight theyll be looking at. Six if not seven blocks of their town completely wiped out. Now, the sheriff did ask us to get the message out for no volunteer groups or rescue groups to come in today. What they want to do is allow the residents to come home, pick up their pieces and Start Building their lives. Just keep in mind a lot theefz residents, the only people they really have as their neighbors are in the exact same situation today, so really the first step is pick up the pieces. The next step is what do they do from here. Thats exactly right. In those small towns its even harder. They have less resources, less people to rely on so the need is even greatner some ways. We will stay on that story. So it was only one game, right . We dont want to get crazy about the world cup, but what a huge game it was in the 86th minute of the opening world cup match against ghana. Ghana beat them the last time. This was huge. John brooks uses his head, thinking perfect header shot, off the ground bounce. Takes the goalie by surprise. Wins the game. 21 years old. German american making history becoming the first ever substitute player to score for the u. S. In world cup play. Next up for the americans, portugal on sunday. Oh, boy, do they have some great momentum. We are live in brazil. Its great to have you, laura. Big win. Didnt look like it was going to go that way but they won and thats all that matters. Reporter no, it certainly didnt, chris. This was a game that was so, so crucial for the usa. This was a mustwin game for them because theyre in a very difficult group, the group of death. Next up is portugal and then germany. If the usa did not win this game, it didnt do too well for their chances to make it out of this group to stay alive in the world cup. Plus, this was a game of redemption for the usa. They lost to ghana in the past two world cups so they wanted a little payback and it started right away in last nights game. The usa couldnt ask for a better start. Just 29 seconds in and Clint Dempsey opened with a big goal. The earliest goal in world cup history. It was the fifth fastest goal in world cup history. The crowds here and back home simply erupted. Usa, usa reporter it was that kind of support inside the stadium that really lifted this team right from the national anthem. Just hearing them how loud they were and chanting the whole game, it was really pushing us on. Reporter but it didnt go completely the americans way. Ghana was no pushover, making a comeback late in the game. With the game tied at 11, it was the 21yearold john brooks playing in his firstever world cup that found the winning goal. Before the game, he talked about what its like being on the American National team. It was a big dream to come to this team. Its an honor to wear this jersey. Reporter its a win for the usa that was remarkably hard fought. The commitment, the determination, the fight, the mentality, those things carried us through. Reporter now, chris, you saw john brooks there and you heard him speaking. Clearly he has a bit of an accent and thats because he wasnt actually born in the usa. He is a german american. He has a nice tattoo on his arm showing germany on one side and illinois on the other side making him eligible to play. Hes one of five players on this 23man squad that werent born in the u. S. Seven players in total didnt grow up in the United States but it really just shows how much of a melting pot this team is. Its really indicative of what the United States of america is. Well said, lara. Our diversity is our greatest strength. Hopefully it continues to play out on the field of play. Thank you so much for giving us a beautiful account of what happened against ghana. Lets hope for the same against portugal. Okay, we want to turn to another big story this morning, the fight for iraq. It is real and urgent. President obama spent last night with National Security officials discussing how to slow the isis fighters quickly taking over the country. The key is baghdad. Just this morning eyewitnesses tell cnn isis got within 40 miles of the capital, storming a Police Station, stealing their weapons, and while the white house weighs options, hundreds of american troops already in baghdad and the surrounding region. Why . What is their mission . What happens next . Lets get to Michelle Kosinski live at the white house with more. Michelle, what do we know . Reporter weve been hearing the same thing pretty much every day, no u. S. Boots on the ground so this might be kind of confusing. Lets lay out exactly what the president is doing here, sending a very small number of troops with a very specific purpose. 275 u. S. Soldiers are now in the region. About 175 of those are already in baghdad. Their job is to protect that u. S. Embassy thats already been partially evacuated. Another 100 troops are outside of iraq but they could be called back in for airfield security if next. Keep in mind, more than 500 u. S. Marines are also on standby in the persian gulf. We know that an Aircraft Carrier has been moved there. And back home, president obama continues to meet with his Top White House National Security advisers. They are still weighing options. This morning in iraq, the Prime Minister met with the u. S. Ambassador and the iraqis are calling that meeting productive, saying there is coordination, but that iraq is looking for more support. Kate . Michelle kosinski live at the white house for us. Its going to be a busy day there, that is for sure. Joining us now to discuss more of what the options are and whats happening on the ground, Christiane Amanpour. Its great to see you, as always. So as michelle just laid out, the president is still considering his options. I spoke with the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee earlier this morning and he said, mike rogers, said that air strikes have to be an option on the table. But the question is, of course, once you begin that, you need to have a clear end game. Do you have a good sense yet, has the white house, the administration laid out that end game yet . No, but clearly the end game is to beat back isis, which is al qaedas offshoot, in many ways worse than al qaeda, and it now has established a statelet, kate. There is an al qaeda state in iraq and straddling parts of syria. The biggest amount of land this group has ever had. This is a major problem. So while theres consideration going on about what to do, these people keep moving forward and they are banging on baghdads door now. So it seems to me and certainly it seems to the iraqis as you can imagine that the First Priority must be to beat them back, to stop their advance. And the second priority if it can happen together all the better, but certainly the second priority has to be a political resolution and political unity and political inclusion. Otherwise most of the country says they have nothing to fight for because they dont believe the government represents them. Thats a big problem. Absent those two things happening, its going to be partitioned iraq. Part will be owned by al qaeda 12 years after 9 11, so this is a really major, major issue here that has to be dealt with by all means necessary. I spoke to the iraqi ambassador to the United States yesterday and he said in afghanistan you had one osama bin laden. Here you could have 1,000 osama bin ladens. That might be a rhetorical flourish, but certainly intelligence officials from the United States to europe to the region are really, really concerned that this is going to destroy the neighborhood and destroy or deeply damage possibly targets in europe and in the United States as well. On that question, the very important question of political reconciliation, mike rogers also said he believesouri al maliki must go but can the United States push him out . They obviously had a lot more leverage when they had a lot more troops in iraq. They dont have that big stick or insurance policy that they did have. Whether those troops were combat troops or whether they were troops there to stay to maintain security and keep training the iraqi forces who clearly were not ready when the United States pulled out. Weve seen that over the last week. The leverage was when those troops were there. That was the maximum leverage. Not just politically but also physically. We were there to be the mediator. There were always issues between certainly the sunnis and the shiites. The kurds are pretty much doing their own thing. They are carving out their own state up there in the north. But between the sunnis and the shiites, the United States at least could be a political broker, and it hasnt been able to play that role and it hasnt been playing that role, at least not to effect, over the last couple of years. So this is, you know, another major issue. So the u. S. Now has to really use all the leverage it has, and it does have leverage because the iraqis are desperate for some kind of military help. So thats perhaps some leverage right now. But arent they also looking at two conflicting time lines . They have the immediate needs of getting isis on its heels and stopping its push forward, but also the concept of political reconciliation. Thats no short ordeal. Right. As mike rogers said to you, and i alluded to, you have to stop the march of isis. It has to happen. Otherwise forget political reconciliation. There is no reconciliation. With who . So you have to stop the march of isis and you have to concentrate the minds of people like Prime Minister maliki and others to attempt to get their political house in order. What weve been hearing is that the second thing that we mentioned has to happen before the first thing, but that seems to be a strange way to go about it, according to many of the former military commanders ive spoke to and many of the political leaders. Theyre just concerned that they need to stop the march of this al qaeda offshoot and now. It may be an impossible prop ti proposition. How she would handle the situation i assume will be one of the Big Questions that Hillary Clinton will face in the town hall that youre going to be hosting with her this evening. Youve been gathering, youve been pulling in questions from the public. Is this one of the big topics . Absolutely, this and many other of those big existential problems that are around the middle east and the world right now. Obviously personal issues too, people wanting to know what her political plans are, but ive been very impressed with the number of questions people want to ask. We dont know all the questions but we know topics people are interested in, and certainly matters of grave National Security are on peoples minds right now. She has said in her book that she apologizes essentially that she was plain and simply wrong in her vote for the iraq war. But going further tonight would be an important step to see where her position is, especially if she does become candidate Hillary Clinton. Great to see you, were all going to be watching this evening. Thank you so much. A reminder to our viewers, christiane is hosting a town hall with Hillary Clinton. Shell be taking your questions. Christiane will be moderating and following up. Thats tonight at 5 00, 9 00 eastern here on cnn. Lets take a look at more of your headlines. 16 minutes after the hour. Over ghana in the teams first world cup match. What a way to start. Despite several injuries, the u. S. Managed a 21 victory. The question, though, does the team have what it takes to defeat soccer juggernaut portugal next. Thats on sunday. Joining us now Rachel Nichols. Boy, look, this is exciting. Were all hopped up on this win. So, have you seen anything like it . That early goal, right, amazing. And when you think about all the tension that was built up beforehand, controversy over the roster, leaving off soccer hero landon donovan, the comments by the coach saying he doesnt think the team can really win. Then youre playing ghana, the team that has knocked us out the past two world cups and you go on the field and, boom, its all lifted with that. Afterward youve got agony, youve got ecstacy, youve god blo blood, youve got revenge. We should just stop now, its good. Its good, its good. Theres a lot to go. Thats an important thing to point out. Whats this group called, the death group . The group of death. Say it with us, the group of death. Although, i will say coming up they play portugal, who came in a little bit more big and bad and scary than they look now. They have ronaldo whos one of the worlds great players, but hes playing on a team that the rest of the team doesnt have that much talent. They have had a couple key injuries and their best defender got a red card in the last game which means he cant play the u. S. So the u. S. Is leaving this last match said set up pretty good. They made history with that first goal being so fast. You talked about ronaldo, they did not show a picture with no shirt on. Isnt this like captain abolicious. I thought i made myself clear, whenever we talk about ronald when we talk about Jurgen Klinsmann, its interesting theres been so much controversy about this statement that he made that the u. S. Wont win. Its not realistic that the u. S. Will win the world cup is what he said. Is that a fair thing for a coach to say . Look, hes german. We know the german character, right . This is not candycoated rainbows to sit there and project out. The u. S. Character, of course, is to say we can do anything. We believe. I mean it is the character that literally shaped this country. It got us across the Rocky Mountains in a covered wagon, so we like to project out that we can do the impossible. Look, if you were going to tell anybody who follows soccer that a 21yearold kid was going to score the gamewinning goal as a substitute defender, defender, nobody would have believed you except maybe, by the way, ive got to point out this kid had a dream two days ago saying he was going to score a goal at the end of the game. He told his teammates and they were like, yeah, whatever. And of course he scores the goal. Youve got to love the internet in the United States. Just after he scored, you look up his bio kipedwikipedia. It says john is the greatest american since abraham lincoln. Its good that we just reshaped history in that way. He should stop reading twitter now before the next game. Its all good. Back to that coach, though, i think that he fed right into that psyche. Also one thing you know about americans, if you tell us we cant, then its like oh, yeah . Well show you. Maybe this is just the gas in the tank the team needs. I think if he could do it again, hed do it differently. Who, jurgen . I do think it was a miscalculation. I dont think it was strategy. I think he was saying what he believes and i think americans like to think we believe that we will win. Our coaches think we can win. Yes. What a novel idea. The chant for american soccer theyre trying to get going is i believe, i believe that, i believe that we will win and when the coach says i dont believe we will win, thats a problem. People dont like that so much. But, you know, maybe hes changed his mind after today. I dont know if you like predictions. Any predictions about portugal . I feel so much better about portugal than i did a week ago. This is a very depleted team and you have to feel much better about them getting out of the group of death. This often sometimes is a group of death so you guys know you dont let guys out of the ring easy, especially with chris there. I saw an interview earlier today. If you believe, we believe. The tablet that can replace your laptop. Welcome back to new day. Once again, as the crisis in iraq continues to escalate, there are Big Questions about whether the United States should intervene. 275 u. S. Troops have already been deployed to iraq to help boost security for u. S. Personnel there and the u. S. Embassy in baghdad. But lets discuss the path forward with congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard of hawaii. Gabbard is an iraq war veteran, currently a military Police Captain with the army National Guard and is one of two female combat veterans in the house, also serving ot House Foreign Affairs committee. Congresswoman, its great to see you. You clearly have a very unique perspective. You were there. You were on the ground. You oppose u. S. Air strikes in this situation. Why . First of all, we have to understand what our objective is as the United States. As a member of congress, as a soldier, as a veteran, my foremost concern and priority is how do we keep the American People safe. When you look at the air strikes that are being proposed that the shialed government is asking for, this not only will do nothing to keep the American People safe, but i think it will actually put us in a more dangerous situation because it will force us to take sides in what is a very dangerous, religious civil war. Weve got to keep focused on those who are threatening the United States, whether its al qaeda or isis or other factions. We can use our resources in a very targeted way, in a very strategic and clearheaded way to address those threats directly. But getting involved in this religious civil war thats been going on for generations will not accomplish that. Frustrating for you, as somebody who was deployed to the region, 2004, to see the politicians shirking the responsibility of figuring out what to do now and building consensus, by playing the blame game of how we got here, especially when theyre not telling the truth. Its very painful, honestly, because i was there in 2005. I worked in a medical unit. We had close to 3,000 troops who were there, many of whom were tasked with training the iraqi police, training the iraqi army and the military and to see the footage of these iraqi soldiers literally shedding their uniforms, watching our humvees rolling down the street, it is hard to take because a lot of my friends didnt come home. And to think that there is a consideration even of us going back in and us getting involved once again in something that we cant solve, and i think thats something that weve got to understand. Weve got to understand whats happening on the ground. And that the iraqi people have to own their future. They have got to make this decision about forming a unity government or doing what they need to do to stop these stop the war and stop the killing. Only they can do that. Youre hearing from some iraqi officials on the ground that the iraqi people cant have that decision with isis going further and further, gaining ground, taking over more and more cities. Chairman mike rogers was on our show earlier and he had said that this isnt necessarily a sunni versus shia problem, this is about al qaeda. Weve got to go in to stop al qaeda because they isis is a real threat to the American Public. Why do you not think its a threat to the American Public . Isis is a threat. Al qaeda is a threat. And those are threats that we can and should address in a very strategic and precise way. Weve got the greatest military in the world. How do you do it . We can do that. We look at where theyre operating, whether it be in iraq or in syria or other countries and use our unconventional special forces to do these precision attacks on those who are threatening us directly. When you look at isis that is now working with the sunni iraqis to go against the shialed government thats aligned with iran, this is not a clear and cleancut case of saying we can just go in and bomb the bad guys. Ultimately by getting involved in this, we will be taking sides in the sunni versus shia battles that are ongoing and it will further cause us harm when we look at whats in the best interest of keeping the American People safe. You could make the same argument, if you want to go after people who are an al qaeda extension, go after boko haram. Which is exactly the point. We cant afford to be the policeman of the world. We cant afford to go in and think that we can be a socalled stabilizing force in all the places that you have these islamic insurgents and terrorists acting up, which is why we need to keep our resources very focused on keeping the American People safe and taking out these threats before they are a threat here to us at home. Im going to get your take, because youre opposed to air strikes, but it does not sound like youre saying hands off, turn our back on iraq, turn our back on this crisis with isis and walk away. Thats not what youre saying . Thats right. Im saying that if we understand that our priority is to keep the American People safe, then we have to understand who actually is creating that threat and where. Which may need personnel on the ground, may need special forces on the ground . If we look at if we look at isis, if we look at al qaeda, whether it be in iraq or afghanistan, in north africa, in pakistan, in many of these other countries, there are ways for us to take very strategic, precise actions to eliminate those threats. That does not include dropping bombs on some of these urban populations and some of the things that are being proposed here that would not reach that objective. Has the white house sought your advice on this . Because you offer a unique perspective. Youve been there. You also know the politics at play here. No. There are a lot of people who have been voicing their concerns i think on this issue. I feel a responsibility to share my own personal perspective, having served there, and bringing that conversation to the table. Weve heard from the white house about things that theyre considering, keeping us in the loop about the different angles that theyre looking at, and i feel that i owe it to my brothers and sisters who lost their lives there and who didnt come home to be a voice for them. Especially when a big part of the criticism of what we do in the exit of afghanistan is theres not enough thought being given to who will stay behind to fight this war, to do the fighting and shed the blood on the ground there, and you understand that cost and you give voice to that congressman gabbard, so thank you very much for weighing in on new day. Well keep you in the loop of what happens Going Forward once the discussion hopefully gets more productive. Thanks for being here. Were going to take a little break on new day. When we come back, we all know the famous voice. There was only one casey kasem, but nobody loved this man more than his kids. Our next guest was his son. Fans will remember him as americas voice. Our next guest remembers him in the most important way, as dad. Mike joins us now in a new exclusive. Mike, we are sorry for your loss but thank you very much for joining us on new day. Yeah, well thank you for your condolences, i appreciate it. I want to say good morning to you, but i think it kind of feels like its still night. I was watching the usa play soccer and screaming. I lost my voice and all of a sudden im here in the studio. Its good. Its good to put some joy in your life right now. I know its a tough time for the family. Yeah, yeah. And i just have to say, youve got some strong genes in that family. You look just like your father, and that is a compliment. He was a handsome man, hes got a beautiful family. Well, thank you very much. Thank you very much. If i only had as much talent as him, id be doing all right. Im sure he would say differently. Im sure he thought his kids were all better than he. Tell us about who he was as a dad. He was just a dad who was always there for you, never missed a beat. He was probably the most working man in hollywood at one point, you know. Basically the Ryan Seacrest of, you know, 20, 30, 40 years ago, 50, 60 years ago. Been around a long time. And he still found time to come to school when we were getting in trouble or come to school when we needed help, to meet the teachers. This man just cared so much about his family, his friends, people around him. He put them first. They were his priority. Talk to us not his work, which is actually well, thats the point. Talk to us about for how all the greatness that we know, which is about his work, what made him great to you is what we dont know. Yeah. I mean its just the amazing thing is youve got this radio persona and you grow up, youre listening to him on sunday morning and youre hearing this voice and it connects with you. You dont know, okay, well, is this the radio persona and is he a different person outside of radio at home. And the answer is no. I mean he really, really could connect with anybody anywhere. I mean he would just tell us you know, just random stories about his friends and, you know, his career and he sounded the same, you know. And he put so much passion and so much depth into everything he says. I mean i once watched him proofread a Long Distance dedication, and while he was proofreading a Long Distance dedication, he started crying. And ive subed in for him on the top 40 and i proofread the Long Distance dedications. It didnt hit me the same way as it hit him, so thats what made him special and thats what made him able to convey with such kind of a heartfelt conveyance, i suppose. And for the family in those final days, obviously this was a tough illness that he had, you know, families who have to face it, its horrible to see someone you love and remember one way become so different at the end. But was the family able to come around him and be there with him and give him that sense of love that we all wish for our parents as they leave this world . Yeah. I mean, you know, the amazing thing is two years ago i thought, okay, im never going to see my dad again. My stepmom just will not let us see him and thats it. And so i kind of knew that, so i said my goodbyes. My dad was looking at me. He was in a bit of a confused state, but he could understand what i was saying. And he just put my hand down as i was trying to touch him and have that genuine moment with him and hes like what are you talking about . He couldnt really communicate with me in so many words, but it was just it was unbelievable how he really he didnt understand what i was saying and i really felt this is the last time. And so i have to give my sister, ca kerri, so much credit. Youve probably been seeing everything thats been going on in the news and reporting about it, but i just didnt have that fight in me. So i signed a contract with jean to be able to see my dad, which was going to be a couple hours a year. I mean it was pathetic. But i was okay with that. Okay, fine. Ill see him and spend that time with him, at least i get to see him. And she, well, breached the contract. And so thats when kerri just said, you know what, enough of this. Weve got to see our dad. Somebody needs to be around him and care for him. Mike, can you help us can you help us here just quickly. I dont want to get into your familys business. Weve been as careful as we can be in reporting this because every family is vulnerable to it. Thank you. But what was going on here . Well, you know, a lot of people you know, i read comments and they say its just bickering. You know, its bickering, the two sides are bickering. Its not bickering. Were not bickering. Its just one side will not let us see our father. We for the life of us cannot figure it out. Okay, if you hate us, fine, i get it, but thats not a reason to stop us from seeing our dad. I dont care how much i hate you, im not going to get in the way of you and your loved ones and your family. Thats a separate issue, right . So its just mind boggling. People would ask me and i dont have an answer, i just dont have an answer. So its not bickering, its just were going to do whatever we can to be with our dad whom we love, and we dont care about, you know, the press and everything thats covering this, its part of it, its just going to happen, hes a public figure. Well, im sorry that part had to play out especially in his final days like this. Yeah. But now for you its about remembering who he was and figuring out what will be difficult because of the enormity of his impact on culture how to remember him for the rest of us. Any plans for a memorial, anything that we should be looking forward to . Yes. Were going to have a private memorial. You know, theres been so much going on in the press and we feel that, look, we love our dad and theres so many people who have been around him for 60plus years. I think this needs to be a private and emotional time for us all to reflect and remember. You know, i sat in the hospital with him for the last nine days of his life. I flew out from singapore where i work and i went to seattle. I sat in the hospital with him and right by his bedside almost 24 7. I had to eat so id leave to go eat but id come right back to his bedside. And then i was, okay, i need to make a memoriam, a video, and put montages together. That was the most emotional, difficult thing ive ever done in my life. I opened up my laptop and started working on it and it was so difficult. I can only imagine. But thank god for the memories and the love and the bond that you had. Yeah. I mean the bond was so deep and he loved everybody, all of his children, his wife. He loved he just loved everybody around him and thats why he was so well respected. I mean this is a guy who would never, never walk by a person asking for an autograph. Always gave people the time of day. Would always talk to people if they wanted to talk. Well, allow me to say, mike hes a humanitarian. We loved him for what he was and its great to hear that thats who he was, not just what he was. It was for sure. And because you look just like him and you sound like him, im going to thank you on behalf of casey kasem and the whole family. Thank you for what you let us share of your father and good luck to you healing, Going Forward and let us know if we can help with anything you want to do to remember him once you deal with it on the family side.
