For coronavirus in just over 48 hours to ten. Eight Campaign Staffers and two secret Service Agents. Despite the cases, despite the warnings from one Health Official after another about even holding the tulsa rally. The president shows no signs of slowing down. Tomorrow he heads to phoenix in arizona for an event at a church that can hold 3,000 people. This is a state where hospitalizations are on the rise. Masks are not mandatory at Trumps Campaign event in the church though the city of phoenix has made them mandatory. The president flaunting the rules that apply to everyone else in the city he is visiting. It all comes as trump is under fire for saying he asked officials to slow down testing to basically have fewer cases reported. When asked about the comments today, trump didnt deny it. Did you ask to slow it down . If it did slow down, frankly, i think were way ahead of ourselves if you want to know the truth. Weve done too good a job. The president asked point blank if he asked to slow it down and he didnt say no. That is a pretty big admission from the president of the United States since testing is the key to allowing states to control the disease spread. Increased testing doesnt even mean more cases. In new york state testing is way up and cases down. When it comes to people being sick and dying, that is hospitalizations and they are up in 14 states. Texas, south carolina, and North Carolina are seeing record hieptsations but trump doesnt want people to think more cases doesnt mean more cases. And so now the Trump Administration and campaign are trying to blow trumps comments and blow them off as a joke. Come on now. That was tongue in cheek, please. The president was choking. The president had a tongue in cheek remark there. It was a comment he made in jest, a comment he made in passing. On the basic level here more than 120,000 dead people isnt a joke. The truth is that trump was not joking about what he meant because it is consistent with what he said before. Just last month he said it could be testing is over rated. Maybe it is over rated. Thats what weve heard time and time again. Its not a joke. Its what he thinks. Well go outfront live outside the white house. What more are you learning about the staffers who have now found out and tested positive after the rally . Reporter these are advance staffers meaning they go to a site the president or Vice President are going to go to. They prepare it. Make sure everything is in order for their arrival but what is different about these two that weve learned now, erin, that tested positive, is they attended the rally saturday night. On saturday we learned of the six staffers who tested positive and obviously were quarantined and did not go to the rally but these two staffers did. The Campaign Says they were Wearing Masks but it is not immediately clear who they were around whether the president or the Vice President or other top officials because there were a ton of surrogates there including several lawmakers there for the president attending that rally because he wanted to have a lot of his surrogates there. That is the question now is and the alarm happening inside the campaign is whether or not this outbreak is spreading further. Because it is not just the eight Campaign Staffers. It is also the two secret Service Agents who tested positive on saturday in addition to those, that first batch of staffers as well. So that is the question here and of course this comes as they are preparing more events for the president as he is hitting the road there. Theyre trying to figure out how theyll do that with the capacity because you noted 3,000 people are supposed to attend that event tomorrow and the question is whether or not it is going to actually be 3,000 people given what we saw happen in tulsa on saturday night. Right. It also comes as they are easing restrictions at the white house. You no longer have to get your Temperature Checked to come into the grounds as has been required for reporters and staffers for the last several months. Thank you very much. You know, as that is happening, those details of the staffers and rally coronavirus is continuing to spread across this country. I mentioned the 14 states with hospitalization increases. 23 states are seeing an increase over the prior week. Nick watt is out front in los angeles tonight. Reporter florida reopened early now paying the price. Saturday a new record. More than 4,000. We know exactly what is happening. Young people are going out because they do think it is invincible. Theyre getting the virus and spreading it into the community. Reporter meanwhile in new york which waited until today to reopen restaurants and retail in the city. We went from the highest transmission rate in the United States to the lowest. The other places basically did reopening as a political exercise. It was politicized by the white house. Reporter nationally we have largely flattened the curve of new cases but they are now rising again fueled by the early openers in the south and the west. Record high hospitalizations right now in arizona, carolinas, and texas. Covid19 is now spreading at an unacceptable rate in texas. It must be corraled. Reporter oklahoma, where the president just was, set a new record sunday. Nearly 500 new cases. I said to my people, slow the testing down please. In arizona where the president will be tomorrow, the average new case count has quadrupled in just three weeks. The greatest threat now is not the virus itself. It is the lack of Global Solidarity and global leadership. Reporter the u. S. Is the global super power and the largest economy on earth. A natural leader. Yet this country cant even manage its own crisis, makes up around 4 of the worlds population, but 25 of global covid19 cases and deaths the white house now prepping for a second wave. We are filling the stockpile in anticipation of a possible problem in the fall. Reporter and the cdc expected to publish new guidance on masks any moment. The cdc has been late and havent given us a great playbook if one at all frankly. Reporter new jersey chose a cautious path, only starting barbers and tanning salons and such today, and the governor is still preaching caution. We are going inside. Folks have to be careful and obey the rules. This is a big step for us. Here at the International Terminal at l. A. X. They are trialing thermal imaging cameras to scan everybody coming in from outside or off planes. If your temperature is 100. 4 or above, boom. You are flagged. The mayor of miami has just made masks mandatory today. Our leaders are now clearly planning for the future and looking like a long haul. Thank you very much. Amazing that Temperature Check how it showed up on nicks face. Out front dr. Sanjay gupta and dr. Jonathan reiner who advised the White House Team under president bush. Sanjay, the start here with the context within the White House Team. Eight staffers, two secret Service Agents have the virus. After the event. Some of those were on the advance team but now we found out about the secret Service Agents. Are you surprised . Im not surprised in that we clearly havent been doing enough testing. Some of these folks getting tested for the first time find out they have it, they may not have symptoms, that part doesnt surprise me. The part that surprises me a little bit and i dont know enough about who the staffers were exactly, what sort of proximity they have to the president. Are they working in the white house . Because the understanding was people there were getting tested pretty frequently. So to suddenly have people show up having the infection now, at this rally is concerning when we did calculations saying there are a hundred people just on our modeling that would show up at what was supposed to be a 20,000 person rally. If eight of them were from the white house staff and secret service alone that is quite a high number. Dr. Reiner, despite this the president is going ahead with the event for young voters in arizona. So masks are not required. It is kind of amazing right . Now in phoenix you have to wear a mask. The democratic mayor is not going to enforce it but that is the example being set. The president just wont do it though that is the rule in the city. The number of new cases in arizona has doubled in the past seven days just shy of doubling. What is the risk here . The risk here is accelerating this pandemic. You know, people are worrying about a second wave but were squarely in the first wave in the south. Arizona over the weekend, about 10 of the cases in the United States were recorded in arizona. Why would we have a public gathering particularly one that doesnt enforce basic social distancing or or a mask during the high point for the virus . Look at the president s advance people that sanjay just spoke about. They probably were at that event for about a week. Just being in tulsa for a week in a hot zone, eight of them contracted the virus. Same thing will happen in arizona. Now think about the consequences for the attendees. It really boggles the mind. Right. Sanjay, of course a lot of those people are young so theyre not worried but they spread it and they spread it to people who are vulnerable, who could get sick, and some of them die. You heard the president not deny whether he told officials to slow down testing. Ill play just a little more of his answer again for you. If it did slow down frankly i think were way ahead of ourselves if you want to know the truth. Weve done too good a job. First, is it possible to do too good a job on testing . I picked something you said in your first answer, too, which is were still not even doing enough of a job on testing. Yeah, right. I dont think too good after job is something were close to and im not sure you can do too good a job here. One thing to keep in mind because people get hung up on this idea weve done 25 million tests here. What about these other countries . It is not just a question of how many tests you do but when you do them. We got a slow start in this country and as a result the infection probably spread much more widely than i think we even realize. A new study just came out today saying in the month of march alone there were probably some 8. 5 Million People who became infected just in that one month. What was the official count . A hundred thousand. That gives you an idea how far off base we are. By the way, after you test you also got to contact trace. The whole point of testing is to isolate people who have the virus, be able to trace their contacts, quarantine as necessary to try and slow down the spread. Im not sure we have the second part of the equation either. We dont have enough testing right now. Do we have enough Contact Tracing to back up that testing . We are sort of, you know, really behind here, erin. And, dr. Reiner, this as the president says it is a joke, the comment he made on testing. All of his team are saying its a joke. Its pretty clear to me it is not a joke because he said the same thing dead seriously in different ways six other times. Do you think in any way he was just trying to be funny . No, not at all. A week ago in the wall street journal the president was quoted as calling testing, quote, over rated. One of our original sins of our Pandemic Response is our slow ramp up of testing. Many wonder whether all of the difficulties could be attributed to incompetence and now we hear the president basically state that he has instructed his people to slow testing. The first patient in the United States tested positive on january 20th. On march 1st the day the first patient tested positive in new york the u. S. Had only done a total of 8,000 tests. And during that time the virus was multiplying everywhere. So to hear that the president has perhaps slowed testing, all right, is mind boggling. It is a dereliction of duty. Id like to know from people like tony fauci and deborah birx and secretary arz and secretary hahn whether they were ever told to slow teflting in the United States. This is really a breach of trust. Well, i thank you both and ill say this in the context of what sanjay said. If that really happened in march and when sanjay is saying you had 8 plus million cases out there some of those people died. Okay . Theyre not here. If testing was slowed down and we didnt inserene earlitervene some of those people might not be dead. I hope people understand knowing what happened is. It is not an academic exercise. Thank you both. Thanks, erin. Next the white house tonight trying to defend this. That is what he is saying by using the racist phrase kung flu . He is linking it to its place of origin. Has more names than any disease in history. I can name kung flu. Here is how the white house explains that. Why does he use racist phrases like the kung flu . The president doesnt. What the president does do is point to the fact that the origin of the virus is china. It is a fair thing to point out as china tries to ridiculously rewrite history, ridiculously blame the coronavirus on american soldiers. This is what china is trying to do. What President Trump is saying, no china. I will label this virus for its place of origin. That is what he is saying by using the racist phrase kung flu . He is linking it to its place of origin. What about Asian Americans who are deeply offended and worried his use will lead to further attacks of discrimination . The president has said very clearly it is important we totally protect our Asian Community in the u. S. And all around the world. They are amazing people and the spreading of the virus is not their fault in any way, shape, or form. Outfront now the democratic congressman from california as you hear that exchange, congressman, kung flu. Is that a racist thing for President Trump to say . Yes. Thank you, erin, for that question. You know, i served on active duty in the United States military to defend the right of any american to say stupid, racist stuff. I just never imagined it would be the president of the United States saying it. This is not the first time. Hes made a number of racist comments in three and a half years and even now instead of trying to unify our country he is trying to divide us. So you are very clear it is a racist term. Is he a racist to use it . The one step further, is it fair to say he is a racist . There is a difference between saying this virus came from china and we certainly cant defend chinas actions with this virus. They did suppress information. That is using terms like kung flu or terms like chinese virus. Im not a virus. We know that there has been an increased number of hate crimes against Asian Americans across america. We are now at about 1900 hate crimes across the country since the pandemic began and talking about not just harassment but people being stabbed in texas. An Asian American person stabbed because the perpetrator felt they were spreading the virus. Spewing this kind of hatred is not something the president should be doing. There have been so many incidents of people being spat at, yelled at, really disturbing things. The White House Press secretary Kayleigh Mcenany you heard there is trying to defend the president s use of the term and did so in part by blaming the media. Let me play that for you, congressman. Here it is. The media has never called it the kung flu. Calling it the chinese coronavirus and kung flu are very different things. The media and your network specifically have repeatedly used the term china virus and wuhan virus. So why doesnt that explanation add up . I know it sounds almost ridiculous to have to ask you this. Could you just explain why it is different to say kung flu than wuhan virus or as you said theyve also called it chinese virus which is also different . Sure. This virus has an official name, covid19. It has an unofficial name, coronavirus. So when you insert an ethnic identifier, it causes people to then increase their harassment and discrimination against Asian Americans. You dont have to just listen to what i think of it. Listen to Kellyanne Conway trumps senior white house adviser who said the term kung flu was wrong and highly offensive. Now, the other thing i want to know is that Asian Americans according to the u. S. Census were the fastest rising ethnic group last decade and there are enough Asian Americans in swing votes across america including 11 in nevada, 5. 5 in texas, 4. 7 in georgia to be the margin of victory this november. So if donald trump wants to keep offending Asian Americans with his racist rhetoric he can go right ahead and then november is going to come. So, you know, this is not the first time right . He has been using, talking about the virus like this. He also had this exchange with an american cbs News Reporter of chinese descent last month. Let me play that for you. Why is this a global competition to you if every day americans are still losing their lives and were still seeing more cases every day . Well, theyre losing their lives everywhere in the world and maybe that is a question you should ask china. Dont ask me. Ask china that question. Okay . Sir, why are you saying that to me, specifically . That i should ask china . Im not saying it specifically to anybody. So, congressman, do you see a pattern with this president . Is this purposeful . Absolutely. Donald trump has been dividing this country since he was elected and its also something that is not just donald trump. If you look at our nations history, there has been racism against minorities and then Asian Americans have had a particular kind of racism. We had the whole yellow hysteria, the chinese exclusion act, internment of japanese americans, the murder of an individual folks thought was taking jobs. What we see now is this blaming of Asian Americans for a virus that knows no race or geography or Party Registration puts everyone at risk. I also note the term kung flu by the way is also making fun of the situation and we shouldnt be making fun of something that killed over 120,000 americans in four months. No. The other thing they turn to as we were talking about before is to Say Something is a joke. Congressman lieu i appreciate your time. Thank you, sir. Thank you, erin. Republican senator mitt romney saying the sudden firing of a top prosecutor who led probes into President Trumps allies, quote, looks pretty swampy. That it does. As the white house struggles to explain who and what was behind the removal of Geoffrey Berman as u. S. Attorney for the Southern District of new york. Why is mr. Berman being dismissed in the first place . Because mr. Clayton wanted to go back to new york city. We wanted to keep him in government and therefore he was given the position at sdny. Why did the president say he wasnt involved in the firing of goeff berman when the attorney general said he, the president was the one who fired him . Because the attorney general was taking the lead on this matter. He did come to the president and report to him when mr. Berman decided not to leave and at that point is when the president agreed with the decision of the attorney general to fire mr. Berman and promote mr. Clayton. So he was involved in it then. He was involved in the signoff capacity. He was not a. G. Barr was leading the way but in a signoff capacity, yes, the president was. Which means President Trump wasnt telling the truth to this question about why he fired the u. S. Attorney. Attorney general barr is working on that. That is his department not mine. So that is really up to him. Im not involved. Outfront now the former u. S. Attorney for the Southern District of new york daniel goldman. Of course you know his face. Thank you very much, dan. What do you make of this . You know, sort of he was involved or he wasnt involved. Clearly, he was involved. It is a pretty easy thing to check and yet they arent giving a straight story. Why is that so hard to do, do you think . Well, it is hard to do because of a quirk in the law which actually because Geoffrey Berman was actually appointed by the District Court in the Southern District and not confirmed by the senate, he can only be fired by the president not by bill barr. And so that is why bill barr wrote the letter on saturday saying the president has fired you and i am relaying that message. The president of course wants to keep some remove from the termination of a u. S. Attorney who is we know conducting investigations into associates of the president including his personal attorney rudy guiliani. But he was unable to keep that remove and he clearly didnt understand the legal ramifications of what was going on when he said on saturday that he has nothing to do with it. Politically it will look very bad if it comes out the reason goeff berman was fired was because he was conducting investigations into the president or Anyone Around the president. How much of a question is there that that isnt the reason . They are denying it is because of the investigations. Theyre denying it but does that add up at all . Well, their proffered reasons do not add up. The nation that jay clayton during a pandemic needs to get back to new york right now makes no sense when everyone is teleworking to begin with. It is also destabilizing to both the sec and the Southern District of new york. It occurred late on a friday night. Bill barr lied about Geoffrey Berman stepping down. And then he changed course and put the deputy u. S. Attorney in the Southern District in charge rather than the u. S. Attorney in new jersey. There are so many reasons why this smells really bad. But we dont know what actually the conflict was or the reason was why bill barr wanted Geoffrey Berman gone and why trump wanted Geoffrey Berman gone. That is why we really do need congressional hearings with Geoffrey Berman there, his former u. S. Attorney testifying, other people in the department of justice perhaps on muellers team. We need to understand how politicized the department of justice has gotten under trump and bill barr. So, you know, i want to ask you about the former National Security adviser john bolton. As you know, you were in the middle of this. He resisted House Democrats efforts to get him to testify during the impeachment inquiry and he came out this morning yet again and slammed how democrats conducted the impeachment inquiry. Here he is. I think there were a lot of republicans in the house that might have been open to a more reasoned, nonpartisan effort. They made it a partisan fight in the house. That guaranteed it would be a partisan fight in the senate. And they lost. That is not a very good strategy. Of course you were sitting there day after day making the legal arguments in this case. What do you say to john bolton . I say he has very good talking points but not very good facts. The fact was this always was a nonpartisan, bipartisan investigation. It was of course led by the majority which were the democrats. But the republicans had every right to ask as many questions and they did. They had the right to call witnesses. This was only partisan because the republicans rallied around President Trump regardless of what his conduct was. To the extent it was partisan and that was problematic it was not because we ran a partisan investigation. We called nonpartisan witnesses and we asked them questions under oath and they gave answers under oath. If the facts were unfavorable to President Trump, and the republicans wanted to defend President Trump, that is not because we ran a bipartisan or a partisan investigation. That is because they were why do you think john bolton didnt testify . He was subpoenaed and then, you know, said i want to wait for a court ruling. He has come out and said all the damning things he would have said under oath to you in congress there in a book. Why do you think he didnt do it then . I think there are a couple possible reasons. One is he saw dollar signs and he wanted to wait and make money off of the information that he had. And i also think john bolton is part of the republican establishment and he may have been a little reticent to come in and testify before a democratic controlled house of representatives. But that is all speculation. The fact of the matter is john bolton had no good faith basis, no reason not to testify as was ultimately borne out by the fact that he was willing to testify in the senate. There is no difference between the house and the senate in terms of a congressional subpoena. Yet john boltons attorney told me directly that they would file a lawsuit in court if he were subpoenaed and wed still be in court today waiting for a ruling on that lawsuit. As the book came out. It is hard to understand. Thank you very much. I appreciate your time. Thanks very much, erin. You know, as to why. Personally, i think its about and how do you do your job, right . So obviously, this man, you know, resorts to violence quite often, and thats just the way he does it. You know, so instinctively when hes going to take somebody down or hes going to do something, hes going to be violent and hes either going to do a choke hold or, you know, punch somebody or, you know, something violent. Its going to hurt someone. That just seems to be what it does. The body cam footage we have shows officers being taunted, verbal taunts before they decline your client. Ill play some of that for you. Here it is. Go ahead. Go ahead. [ bleep ]. You the only one stoner, go ahead. I aint driving [ bleep ]. What the [ bleep ] are you doing . Are you doing . Get away from me. So laurie, what led to this whole altercation that we just saw play out, as far as you understand it . Well, what i was originally told was the officers received a call from somebody complaining that some guys were throwing empty cans at them. Thats what they claimed but then when we asked to hear the 911 call, there was no 911 call so then they changed their story. And then eventually, it just sort of came out that they saw them on the beach. They recognized all three of them. In fact, one of the officers said how they recognized my client as the bipolar guy that was from the other day. I dont know what that means, and so you can see on the video cam or the body cam where its the officers who start the physical contact. Clearly, these guys are intoxicated and then my client, you know, has potentially has some sort of mental disorder and so the officers should not have been exaggerating everything. They should have been trying to deescalate but instead, you see at one point, one of the officers shoved a guy who is taking the video on his camera and around his phone. So, you know, and then when the guy comes back, you can see that officer is smirking and, you know, just kind of agitating them, you know, instead of just letting them walk away, you know, and i dont think they needed to have three officers pounce on my client who weighs about 100 pounds soaking wet but all right. I appreciate your time. I mean, its of usually these are going to be serious questions and this is the accountability that were now all going to see more of. Appreciate your time. Thank you.
