Who fired the missile that blew the boeing 777 out of the sky. President obama is not satisfied investigators are getting the access they need to the crash site. Unfortunately, the russian backed people continue to block the investigation. They repeatedly presented International Investigators from gaining full access to the wreckage. As investigators approached, they fired their weapons into the air. The separatists are removing evidence from the crash site. What are they trying to hide . Vladimir putin appears to be trying to distance himself from the rebels. Listen to his ambassador from the u. N. Trying to insist the downing of flight 17 was nothing more than a mistake. According to them, the people were saying they shot down the military jet. If they shot down the military jet, there was confusion. There was confusion, not an act of terrorism. The kremlin keeps up the spin campaign, the fighting rages around the flight 17 wreckage. I want to bring in ivan watson, live in donetsk. People have been putting their families on trains to get out of the region because they are still in an active war zone. What are you seeing now . Reporter thats right. On monday, we saw dramatic and emotional scenes as residents of this separatist held city were putting their children, their wives on a train that was headed to moscow and the sound of artillery was rumbling in the not too far away as they were doing this. There were tears and fear as well with at least five people reported killed here in donetsk as a result of what are clearly artillery strikes hitting residential neighborhoods here apparently from the direction of Ukraine Military units in the north of the city where the fighting, again, is raging today. Donetsk is located an hour to hour and a half drive away from the wheat fields where flight mh17 went down with 298 people on board. A train left before dawn this morning from donetsk to cross front lines to ukrainon government controlled area to kharkiv. The bodies were on the train and will be flown from kharkiv to amsterdam where the grim process of identifying the bodies will begin for repatriotism to the countries of origin. Christine . In a mock diplomatic press conference, i dont know what you had, the rebels handing over the black boxes to malaysian authorities. Tell us about that handover. Certainly, it changed. They have been holding on to it for several days. Pressure from Vladimir Putin and the rest of the world and they did. Reporter more than four days after the crash, the leader of the separatists here, the selfdeclared Prime Minister, had a ceremony, a signing ceremony with the malaysian delegation which he handed over these orange devices. Commonly referred to as black boxes with the words flight recorder clearly written on the side. For more than four days, this man, himself, said we have taken technical objects from the crash site, but we dont have the expertise to determine if they are the flight recorders. Its clearly marked on the side of the devices. That, perhaps, is helping lead to the conclusion or accusation that some western governments led that the rebels are not being entirely transparent about the investigation or they are with holding information. They thanked him for his cooperation. The malaysians announced an agreement to provide free and safe access for International Experts to the crash zone. All right, ivan watson for us in donetsk, thank you. The big news, the trains carrying the victims of flight 17 just began arriving in kharkiv. They pulled out of donetsk last night. They have arrived in kharkiv, many hours away. 282 bodies will be flown to the netherlands after they are processed for family who is lost loved ones. The pain is palpable. I am very angry about the whole situation. Im not only angry with the rebellion, but also the ukraine government who had been too weak not to be able to silence them. I hope president obama finds a way to punish the responsible people for this hideous act. Nick paton walsh joins us with more. What can you tell us this morning . Reporter an hour ago, some armed men accompanying turned up here. They have just been taken inside a building nearby the Railway Station where we believe the process of unloading the trains will slowly begin to happen. The train was said to have left from donetsk and moved up toward not the normal route you would take. I would think there are some separatist militants guarding that train. The relation they seem to have with ukrainians around them. We have seen inside the train some of the expert who is are accompanying the very tragic cargo that train contains. Inside now. We have been told by a dutch official, its closed military station. They will be there where the bodies are taken off. The airport told me coffins are being brought in slowly over the past two or three days, two days, i should say. Its trying to assist in getting the bodies back with dignity. The train actually arrived here. Said to be moving the victims from the train where they sat for over a day now. Put them in the coffins and transport them to the airport and back to the netherlands will begin. Its difficult work. Help by australians in the town as well. We havent seen many of the victims of the crash but certainly, this town, in many ways seems to be happening inside it now. John . An enormous task, but an important task for the families on board. The conspiracy theories, especially in the first days after that plane crashed were extraordinary. You had one that it was perhaps Ukrainian Military taking down president putins jet. They mistook that for the airliner. Another theory these were actually bodies the plane was full of dead bodies from mh370 crash that were stored and deposited here. Really, conspiracy theories rather ridiculous. But, the sort of official position we heard, for example from the Defense Ministry and the Russian Ambassador to the u. N. Is that they are asking questions of kiev as to why they were buk missile launches that belonged to the Ukrainian Military at the time. Why they say there was a ukrainian fighter jet flying close to the Malaysian Airline plane when it went down. And the russian officials refute the evidence that the u. S. And the ukrainians put there that these audios that were doctored. Its claim and counter claim fueling the information war that is going on between, you know, the west and russia and which has been going on all the way since the crisis began. So, its difficult to really imagine the russian president changing his story. Especially now that this site has been so tampered with. Many civilians have been killed along with 29 israeli troops. Fire planes have been bombing gaza city overnight. There have been explosions behind you all night. What is the latest on the ground . Reporter john, those bombings, that artillery fire that has been going on throughout the night and throughout the morning as well. Israeli naval gun boats in action pounding the gaza coast from the other side, the border between gaza and israel on the eastern side. Artillery pieces have been pounding the eastern neighborhoods and also air strikes going in both from drones, we believe and 16 fighter jets. Hamas, though, is not giving up the fight. We have seen rockets being launched, multiple rockets launched from single firing positions here in gaza and we understand that in certain parts of the east of gaza, the Israeli Military where they have boots on the ground are finding fierce resistance from hamas aboveground and below ground in the tunnel complexes they have been building and perfecting since the last operations with israel in 2012 and 2009. That, perhaps is one reason israel may not be too keen for a ceasefire right now. One of its stated missions was to come in here and destroy the tunnel complexes to prevent hamas from burrowing into israel and fighting on israeli territory. Hamas continues to do that despite the fire power directed at them. Clearly havent shut down the rocket launchers either. Also, the wild card, hamas claims, as we know, over the weekend to have captured an israeli soldier. This morning, the israeli soldier identified six victims, six soldiers killed during a clash on sunday. They havent yet determined the status of a seventh soldier. That is the meaning that either a body live or dead of an israeli soldier is missing. That could back up hamas claims and they will want to use that soldier to leverage political and military gains out of israel. Really, those talks go on in cairo, theres a lot of confidence building that needs to be done. It will take a lot of diplomatic skill if we are going to see the guns fall silence. We are not hearing as much artillery in the city of donetsk today as we heard throughout the day on monday with at least five civilian residents of the city reported killed by the city administration. We certainly saw some of the places where the shells landed. This is the city that the train loaded with more than 200 bodies of mh17 victims left from before dawn this morning on the long route to a government controlled city called kharkiv where an International Team of investigators, forensics experts are gathered to help transport the passengers bodies to amsterdam. The point of origin of the doomed flight where forensics work will begin. The hard work of identifying the bodies. Also, this is the city where before dawn this morning, the selfdeclared leaders of the separatist region, the Prime Minister staged an elaborate predawn ceremony where he handed over the black boxes from mh17 to a malaysian delegation. The selfdeclared Prime Minister took that opportunity to deny links to the shooting down of the plane and to pledge that he would work with International Investigators to move forwards on the investigation. Can you give us a sense of whats going on at the crash site this morning . The black boxes have been turned over. The bodies of the victims have been moved from the scene there. Are the International Investigators satisfied they are getting the access they want and they need . Reporter well, the people have taken the lead on this are a group called osce. They are international monitors who are already stationed here in ukraine at a number of points not to have anything to do with a tragedy involving a downed airliner, but we are working here for monitoring the conflict here. So, they initially, on the first day were restricted and embarrassed by the rebels when they went to the crash site and intimidated by them. Their access to the crash site has improved day after day. They were allowed to accompany, bring along ukrainian Civil Aviation experts which is not recognized by the separatists. They are at war with the government. The access is improved. On monday, dutch Forensic Experts were allowed to visit the train cars where the passengers bodies were being stored and travel to the crash site as well. We are told the access of the International Exports who are starting to arrive has improved. The separatists are providing more access. One question remains, why did it take more than four days to hand over the black boxes, the flight recorders and why did the rebels say they werent sure whether they had the black boxes though it was clearly written, as you can see in the video on the side of the devices. John. Certainly makes you question the intent of the rebels and what went on over the last four days at the crash scene. Ivan watson live in donetsk. Thank you so much. This is a complicated and heart breaking operation that these officials have to do here to get these bodies back home to the netherlands. What can you tell us is happening now . Reporter im standing outside the territory where the process will happen. The train arrived in kharkiv and the bodies will be put in coffins, then in planes that will fly them back to the netherlands. The place im at now, we saw the train arrive an hour and a half ago. One of the Railway Stations in kharkiv, on the ground, what used to be a tank factory. Police there, a number of journalists and on the train we saw malaysian officials accompanying the bodies. They wouldnt give comment who they were and what they were doing there. They didnt have a friendly relationship with them. The bodies in kharkiv and now inside the closed Military Area where the presence of unloading them, putting them in coffins that have been flown in from the netherlands and putting them on the plane. How long it will take is unclear right now. We are understanding most of the identification procedures, the complex project. Who the bodies belong to and who they used to be when they were alive. That will be occurring in the netherlands. Christine . Do we know how many bodies they have transported and sadly, because of the crash, not all of the bodies have been recovered. Reporter some of the bodies are still in the devastation of what happened to the aircraft. If a missile hits an airplane at 33,000 feet, most of those on board the medics arriving have been coming in in large numbers. Dutch soldiers are arriving at the airport. As much dignity as they can salvage. They were on a train for over a day. Passing through the territory, not guaranteed until we saw them arrive in kharkiv a couple hours ago. Now, dutch officials are extraordinary. Pretty much everybody he knew knew somebody on that plane. That goes to show the level of emotion felt by the dutch people right now. Christine . In the same way we charge the russians in orchestrated a spin campaign, they do the same against western media. There are pieces of evidence that the russians have now pointed to, which they say raise questions over kievs role. They say there was a ukrainian warplane flying close to the airliner at the time of the incident confirmed by video images they have from a site near the russian ukrainian border. They have a ukrainian buk missile launcher at the time of the crash. They say the evidence the ukrainians and the u. S. Put out there, the audio intercepts are fakes and have been tampered with. The question of russian involvement is two hold. Did it launch the missile which is responsible for bringing down the plane or the one captured by the prorussian separatists that they boasted about on june 29th. The border picture is, of course, the ongoing support mr. Putin has given to the prorussian separatists. Even if it wasnt russian expertise, hes allowing weapons and fighters to cross over the border. This has been fueled by russian involvement. In that context, it is his responsibility and the influence hoe can bring to bear in bring thg to a resolution. Sanctions are being rushed and people are pressing him so much to influence how they are treating the crime scene. John . It will be interesting to see if he does use the pressure going forward. They could be air strikes or maybe israels combat field engineers moved into the neighborhoods and possibly detected the mouths of some of the militant tunnels and using explozives so they are no longer used for cross border raids. That was a key aim of israel when they came into gaza. Really, that is what israel is up against. A race against time to shut down the rocket launchers and hamas tunnels so they cannot come in and fight israel on their home turf. Once that job is done, theres a chance of a ceasefire. Right now, hamas feels in warfare terms, its giving a good account of itself. For that reason, they may not want to stop the fight right now.
