After the speech, iranian social media exploding with criticism of President Trump, accusing him of being rude and impolite. Also, of course, voicing support for irans president Hassan Rouhani. A couple of minutes ago, i looked at some newspaper headlines in iran. One of the things they talk mostly about is the fact that President Trump got laughed at at the United Nations when he was doing that speech. Weve to keep in mind that we have to keep in mind that this happened when president rue happeny is embattled at home rouhani is embattled at home. The economy is not doing well, trouble with the hardliners. Seems the criticism he is getting from President Trump is uniting those factions more than anything else. Both the Supreme Leader and rouhani said right now a meeting with President Trump is absolutely off the table. They say it would be nothing more than a photo opportunity. Certainly, weve seen the sparks fly once at the United Nations. And we might see more of that later today. Well hear from President Trump at 5 00 p. M. Eastern time. Thanks. Translator it is unfortunate that we are witnessing rumors in the world who think they can secure their interests better or at least in the short through Public Sentiments and gain public support through the extremist nationalism and racism and xenophobic tendencies resembling a nazi disposition. We have two distinguished guests. Josh rogue an for the Washington Post and nic robertson, both in studio. Nic, the International Diplomatic editor, of course, here at cnn. Welcome. Good to see you in studio. Good morning. Lets start with the laughter moment. As christine mentioned, theres a lot of context here for mr. Trump talking about the world laughing at the United States. Listen the world is laughing at us, folks. Theyre laughing at us, at our stupidity. They laugh at us. Theyre laughing at us. Its crazy whats going on. Everybodys laughing at us. Theyre laughing at us. We dont know what were doing. Theyre laughing at us because they think were stupid. The whole world is laughing at us. Theyre laughing at this at whats going on in our country. The world laughs at us, folks. The world laughs at us. Thats 20 seconds. It could go on. It happened directly to his face. He said later it was meant to get laughter, he said it was great. How significant was that moment . Number one it didnt seem in the moment that he was expecting that. That was his clear reaction. It is significant. Last year the world was suspending its disbelief or belief in the way President Trump was going to be. This year they knew. When he started down the track, almost the way he started his speech last year, he became, in their eyes, a caricature of himself. This is what they were expecting. They were expecting him to get up and big up himself first. When you have billions of people on the plan tote talk, but he talks planet to talk about, he talks about himself. That was the root of the laughter. This is a shame for the United States. This is a difficulty for him. He wants, he said in the speech, talking about iran, to isolate iran. How does that happen . When youve been laughed at. Its interesting, when he goes to rallies, he reads literally from a piece of paper of all the things he thinks hes done right and great accomplishments of his administration. He does that at the u. N. , and it is not an ohio crowd. Its a different crowd. You get the sense that mr. Trump is not used to a critical audience. When he heard the laughter he was surprised that his laughable claims elicited laughter. Maybe thats good. Maybe the president once a year he should hear from an audience that doesnt automatically tell him what he wants to hear. That laughter dissipated pretty quick as he went into the speech, antiglobalization, antiimmigration, antimigration speech, credit sighting the World Organizations criticizing the World Organization thats were here in new york to celebrate. Criticizing foreign aid and sabre rattling and blustering and threatening. Theres no laughter about that. Those are serious issues, issues where the United States has put itself on the opposite side of its friends and allies. Whats the different between last year . Last year we had an Iranian Nuclear deal we were part of with our european allies and russia and china. This year the european allies on the first day of the week announced that theyll work with iran to subvert american policy. Thats not funny. Thats not a joke. Thats us losing all of our allies, our main enemy. Now we have to see whether or not this new pressure on iran is going to work. Were going to ramp up the pressure, be tough, were going to say lots of tough things. Maybe the iranians will fold and do everything we say. Or maybe our European Partners will fold and do everything we say. If not, there are huge consequences to that. I think its a light moment. We can say, oh, isnt that funny that everyone thinks that our president is a joke. But underneath that, some very serious, very dangerous issues that hes dealing with. When they werent laughing, they may have gobeen googling things like Global Governance and doctrine of patriotism. You said there were echoes of the 1930s. Why and how significant that was . I wasnt the only one to get that takeaway. Its ironic that you have echoes of the 1930s because the u. N. Grew out of the chaos that came as a product of the nationalism that was abundant in the 1930s. If you listened to the speech of rouhani, he talked about some leaders using xenophobia that tends toward naziism. If you listen to the passionate speech of emmanuel macron, the french president who took the podium later in the day, he was thumping the lectern, even apologized later, thumping it with passion. He was also raising peoples attention to weve heard this before, that weve heard this type of speech before. Its dark, it doesnt portend anything good. And if you listen to the beginning of the day to what the u. N. Secretary general, antonio gutierrez, said, he talked about the fear of how the isolation and fear between nations, this is happening between china and the United States and other countries, as well. The fear he talked about, you know, in greece thousands of years ago, the athenians went to war with the spartans because the spartans were afraid of how well their nearby citystate was doing. The u. N. Secretary general is putting it on the map where this type of language leads. So this reference to the 1930s, this harkening back to an era that weve seen before that leads to chaos and possible wash, its very real. Thats why the mood i think toward the end was so somber and dark. Interesting to point out the lesson of the 1930s, we were the good guys. We saved the world from facism and totalitarianism. The regime is the holocaust deniers. When they throw around antinazi rhetoric, theyre the denierden. And the United States helped provide peace, prosperity, stability for the entire world. Now its a shame that the president of the United States doesnt appreciate that. That he doesnt see any value in that, that he doesnt realize the United States strength is based on our alliances in the very organizations he disparages. At the end of the day, he does some points. The Iranian Regime is malicious. They are bad. Theyre destabilizing. They are aggressive and militant and belligerent. Thats a problem. The question i think for america is do we solve that problem by ourselves, or do we solve the problem with all these organizations and allies that we spend all the time we talk about the mood, how somber by the end of the day. Lets listen to what the president said, the rejection of globalism. I think its important to listen in the president s own words. America is governor e governed by americans. We reject the etiology of globalism and embrace the etiology of globalism and embrace the doctrine. We should obsessive our own beliefs and traditions. The United States will not tell you how to live or work or worship. We only ask that you honor our sovereignty in return. Wow. I mean, that is a rejection really of 70 years of American Foreign policy. Coming out of the second world war. Everything that the United States built the economic order to protect us from from this that type of catastrophe again. This president is actively undermining it. His audience there in many cases, and his audience knows it. He picked out again, beat up on germany, you know, largest political largest economic powerhouse in europe. Picked on them again and did that at nato a few months ago. You know, why i mean, we understan understand why hes doing it. The question, this is on to joshs point here, is is that productive to get done what the United States wants to get done . And the answer in that laughter today had to be, gee, maybe maybe not. Theres a better way to do this. Yeah. I think its worth explaining why hes doing it. And the reason is is because that speech is not pointed at u. N. Diplomats. Not pointed at journalists. Its pointed at his base. Hes heading into a midterm. These are the Foreign Policy notes that rang true with his voters, with the people who put him into office. They have this wellsown fear of globalization. Globalization is inevitable. Globalization is just whats going on. But they demonize this idea in such a comprehensive way that when the president gets in front of these crowds, he makes these broad claims that somehow we can go back to a time when america could act alone and without partners and allies and outside of the International Norms and organizations that exist. I dont think its going to work. I dont think hes going to do most of that. But its important when youre listening to him to understand hes not talking to the diplomats. Hes talking to the people who are going to vote in november. Whatever he says behind closed doors with the diplomats, he undermines the message. And it just reenforces that impression that President Trump, the impression that many people around the world have, that President Trump flipflops and is inconsistent. Thats what president rouhani told Christiane Amanpour in their interview. The United States is interconsistent, and that inconsistent, and that resonates around the world. One message thats to the base but going to the diplomats, so what do you say when youre in a rom, and how do you convince them that this is the real you . Well get to reframe at 5 00 eastern time.
