An fbi agent [ inaudible ] that was deplorable. Good morning, michelle. Good to see you. That was a national embarrassment. It was nasty. Im dave briggs. Its friday, three a. M. In the east, live around the world, this morning we start with the president in the uk. I expect a rough road ahead, made bumpier by combative comments by the president , made the Sun Newspaper in the uk. The interview went online as the dinner with Prime Minister theresa may ended. He said may ignored his advice on Brexit Strategy and said her proposal to maintain close ties to the European Union would jeopardize any future trade deal with the u. S. If they do a deal like that, well be dealing with the European Union, instead of dealing with the uk. So it will probably kill the deal. If they do that, their trade deal with the u. S. Will probably not be made. It was extraordinary. Criticism of a foreign leader during a trip to their own country, just the latest example of the president playing nice in person and then getting very tough in public. Lets bring in Nic Robertson for the latest, live for us in london. Nic, good morning. Reporter what a bitter aftertaste to come after that sumptuous dinner that theresa may hosted for trump last night, and a taste of whats to come. The pair are expected to meet later this morning but what President Trump has said here really is a body slam for theresa may. Remembering she was the first world leader to go congratulate President Trump after his inauguration in the white house. She did that because she wanted to align herself to him politically closely. Now he seems to be throwing that back in her face, saying that he gave her advice on brexit, that its not going the way that he thinks its going to go well for britain, a way that he says wont allow britain to do good trade deals with the United States in the future. This after nato yesterday, he said he didnt have an opinion on brexit other than whatever it was that was going to make the british people happy. Not only this, hes reopened old wounds with london mayor sadiq khan again in this newspaper article, saying that sadiq khan didnt cope with the terrorism here in the uk very well, that he is responsible, khan is responsible for rising Violent Crime on the streets of london. And then President Trump does something that perhaps no Prime Minister would expect when the president visits them, recommends another politician, Boris Johnson, the foreign minister, former foreign minister, who quit only monday this week, says that he would make a good Prime Minister. So all of this really upends any of the good work theresa may thought she was doing, convincing President Trump that not only can britain and the United States have a special relationship, they can have a special relationship. On her agenda today was to tell President Trump, remind people of how many jobs British Companies create in america, more than a million, according to her staff, between alaska across the United States, that britain is a good friend to the United States. Right now, it doesnt seem, from theresa mays perspective, President Trump is being a particularly good friend to her. Dave . Nic robertson, thank you. Joining us now, josh rogan, columnist for the Washington Post. Good to see you. Morning. Much to discuss. Start with the sun interview, the president blasting theresa mays exit strategy, from brexit, talking about Boris Johnson, being a good candidate to be a Prime Minister. Has all the qualities. How does this impact our special relationship . In all bad ways. Two big problems. One is the optics, insulting the Prime Minister that youre coming to visit right before you visit her, putting her in a horrible situation, supporting her opposition, undermining her policies, its bad form. Its a diplomatic faux pas. Thats diplomacy 101. You shouldnt do that. ps emerged. Lets take those comments about her Brexit Strategy, just as one example. Okay, first of all, President Trump doesnt seem to realize that the uks trading relationship with the eu will always be more important than its trading relationship with the United States. They have to figure out the eu part first. He doesnt seem to understand that. Second of all, there is no trade deal with the United States on the table. It doesnt exist. His threat is an empty one. So hes wrong on the opt inics, wrong on the politics, and wrong on the details. Seems like from what our sources tell us there, this seems to be more of the same kind of bluster that we just saw on nato, slam them in front of the cameras, and then in private, start to iron this out and all of a sudden its a great relationship. Is that what well see later today, do you think . Im sure youll see a back and forth. But theres a consistency in President Trumps attack on the eu and attack on member states, tying it to trade. In a meeting with the french president in april, trump offered him a better trade deal if he would leave the eu, it was an equally ridiculous proposition at the time. But it shows hes saying these things to leaders in public and in private. He wants a dissolution of the eu. He thinks these trade deals are leverage. None of those are American Foreign policy, none of those are supported by either party in the u. S. Congress. Its not just bluster. This is what the president thinks, this is what hes trying to do, its not working, its not helpful. But its not just him popping off for no reason. The president said nato in that room, there was a great collegial spirit that they were unified. Beyond the bluster, whats the impact of all this . First of all, that characterization is disputed by lots of other people in the room. Its clear from cnns reporting, from the Washington Post reporting, from a lot of other reporting, that these european leaders at the nato summit were freaked out. They did not see it as ending unified. It could have gone worse, like the g7 when trump threw two star bursts at angela merkel. That didnt happen. So i guess there are worse case outcomes. But the cumulative effect of President Trump starting unnecessary fights with all of our allies in these meetings is to undermine the foundation of the transatlantic relationship and that serves only one countrys strategic goal and thats russia. And theresa may is so weak right now. Doing this interview and talking of Boris Johnson, whos currently the foreign secretary, as potentially this great Prime Minister. Today now trump has to sit down and have lunch and talk again with theresa may. Who knows how this is going to go . Its, you know, theres only two theories of what trump is doing here. Erth hes intentionally making the u. S. uk relationship more putting more animosity to it, making it more tense, making it more complicated, more difficult. Or hes doing it unintentionally. Which one is worse . We cant really be sure what the president s motivations are, but either way, whether hes intentionally insulting her before they meet and making her position weaker and putting business between us and our oldest, strongest ally, or hes doing it accidentally. I think its bad either way. Only thing we can be sure of, they were red and pink star bursts, correct . Well ta thank you, sir. Thanks, josh. But strzok was having none of it. At no time did those personal beliefs ever enter into the rem of any decision i took, and the suggestion that i would somehow cast aside all of these procedures, all of these safeguards and somehow be able to do this is astounding to me. There were plenty of low moments in the hearing. Like this one, when congressman Louie Gohmert brought up strzoks affair with lisa page. And i cant help but wonder when i see you looking there with a little smirk, how many times did you look so innocent into your wifes eye and lie to her about lisa . Mr. Chairman, thats outrageous. Thats what he told house lawmakers just as the Trump Administration slapped new tariffs on china worth 200 billion. Now mnuchin says hes not seen any negative impact on Business Sentiment or the u. Noticeably absent from that very nice note, any reference to denuclearization. Cnns Andrew Stevens now is live in seoul with more, and of course, andrew, the u. S. Side got stood up again by north korea this week, but now the meeting is back on. Tell us the latest. Reporter yeah, thats right, michelle. The meeting is back on, on sunday. You mentioned kim jongun calling donald trump your excellency. And now were getting word that the u. S. Is moving at the United Nations to tell u. N. Members to stop supplying any more fuel to north korea, because they have been sanctions busting. President trump says trade deals are in jeopardy because theresa may didnt take his advice on brexit. Tens of thousands are protesting the president s visit. How many times did you look so innocent into your wifes eye and lie to her about mr. Chairman, this is outrageous so that happened. Sparks fly for ten hours as fbi agent peter strzok fends off accusations of bias and members of congress fend off one another. Welcome back to early start. Very early. An extraordinary threehour morning on a wild day in the news. Too much going on maybe. At first the pomp, now the politics, for President Trump in the uk. Expect a rough road ahead made bumpier by combative comments the president made to the Sun Newspaper. The interview went online as last nights gala dinner with theresa may was ending. He said may ignored his advice on Brexit Strategy and said her proposal to maintain close ties to the European Union would jeopardize any future trade deal with the United States. If they do a deal like that, well be dealing with the European Union, instead of dealing with the uk. So it will probably kill the deal if they do that, their trade deal with the u. S. Will probably not be made. British sources this morning telling us that is simply not true. But it was extraordinary criticism of a foreign leader during a trip to their own country. And just the latest example of the president playing nice in person, then getting tough in public. For the latest, lets bring in International Diplomatic editor Nic Robertson live in london. Nic, i know that the brits are reeling from that interview overnight. Sure. I mean, look, in fairness to theresa may, when she was asked this very question on monday this week, in the house of parliament, just after her foreign secretary Boris Johnson had resigned, she did say, when asked the question, would her current Brexit Strategy allow her to do the type of business deals with the United States she originally thought shed be able to do, she said no, we would be restricted. She said she was doing that because that would be better for jobs for people in britain. But to the point of this article and to the point of what President Trump has said, he is saying here that he tried to give theresa may advice on negotiating brexit and she hadnt taken it. This comes after he was asked the question at nato in brussels yesterday. He said, i dont particularly have a view on brexit. I want the people of the uk to be happy, but hes slamming her and saying that Boris Johnson, the outgoing foreign secretary, would make a good Prime Minister. Hes digging up old wounds and picking up old fights with london mayor sadiq khan, saying sadiq khan isnt coping and dealing with terrorism properly in the uk, that sadiq khan is not able to stop the rising Violent Crime on the streets of london, that britain is going to lose its National Character by the amount of immigration coming into the country. All of these things are real shots at the Prime Minister whos already in a very precarious situation. What youre hearing over my shoulder there, the helicopters. It looks like marine 1 landing in the grounds of the u. S. Ambassadors residence in london, where President Trump is staying. Hes got a busy day ahead of him, hell meet the Prime Minister, hell meet the queen. But first of all, hes going to a military academy to see britains top class officers getting their training there. Michelle . Thanks so much, nic. Yeah, there was a lot in that interview. Joining us this morning, josh roggin, also columnist for the Washington Post. Good morning. Morning. The first time he was going to the uk, he couldnt even go to visit the u. S. s closest ally. That is extraordinary in and of itself. Now were seeing all of this. Any of this surprising . We tend to be less and less surprised by the president s behavior, but in any objective sense, its shocking for the president of the United States to visit a foreign country, immediately take sides in their internal politics, against the sitting government. Now, if you want to think about why hes doing that, theres a pretty clear reason, right . Hes pro brexit. He has connection to the brexiteers. It goes back to the campaign. Its also one of the biggest stories in england right now that the people who were funding brexit are newly discovered to have very close ties with the russian embassy, the russian ambassador. They were offering them sweetheart deals on diamond and gold mines, while they were doling out money to support brexit. One would think that a president thats hounded by what he calls a fake witchhunt about his own ties to russia wouldnt embrace the very people who are now being exposed for having deep ties to russia, in the country that he already knows. Nevertheless, is it surprising . No . Is it shocking . Yes. He went on this foreign trip wanting to pick a fight everywhere. So he undermines theresa mays Brexit Strategy, he elevates Boris Johnson, saying hed make a great Prime Minister, he has what it takes and the right attitude. Heres how the white house explains all of this. Sarah sanders saying, the president likes and respects Prime Minister may very much. As he said in his interview with the sun, shes a very good person, and he never said anything bad about her. He thought she was great on nato today and is a really terrific person. Basically what hes doing is, hes poisoning the relationship between washington and london at a crucial time, okay . Hes already very unpopular in britain. The reason the president is taking marine 1 everywhere because he doesnt want to drive on the streets of london, confronted by protesters all the time. The reason he hasnt gone to london yet until this point. Then when he finally shows up there, just being a fly in the punch bowl, all hes doing is forcing those people who want to support him in england, to be more against him, because the politics are going to turn against him, and validating the criticisms of all his critics, and that undermines all the cooperation that goes on in the relationship, just as he did it in brussels last week and just as he did it at the g7 in canada. Thats one reason why theyre keeping these meeting says as much out of Central London as possible. But looks like the protests are still going to happen. Well have to see. But on russia, you know, one of the things that could happen, as he leaves the uk, and now hes going to sit down with president putin, and of course u. S. Allies were worried that of course these meetings with the u. S. s closest friends were going to be tough, and this could be all smiles with putin. What do you think hes going to get out of that, if anything . I know theres really no agenda. First of all, the optics of warring with your allies and then meeting with americas one of americas great adversaries, that will tell us all we need to know about who this president likes and doesnt like, which relationships he wants to strengthen and which to attack. On the policy level, the implications could be much more serious. We know from the president s own statements, we know he wants to bring american troops home and put russia more in control. We know he feels russian sanctions should be looked at, that crimea should be part of russia. Again, this is against the alliance agreement, this is against his own Top National Security officials. Its bad policy, its bad negotiating, but the president of the United States has taken over foreign policy, and when he gets into the room with Vladimir Putin, all of these things are on the table. John bolton, mike pompeo, theresa may, none of them can prevent President Trump from doing what he wants to do in that meeting. And the unpriblt and risk of that is impossible to calculate and has a lot of people inside his administration, around washington, and around the world, very, very concerned. So the deal to pull u. S. Troops out of syria and hand it over to the russians, whats the pushback . Is it pompeo . Is someone going to stand up and say, this is a line we cannot cross . And what can congress do, if anything . Right. Everyone inside Trumps Administration and congress who believes that putting russia in charge of syria is a terrible idea, is trying to convince the president not to do it. Okay . Theyre failing. Hes not persuaded. He simply doesnt agree that its a bad idea. In the end, nobody can stop him from making this deal if he wants to. People are trying to slow it down, head it off, make it less bad, put their own ideas in there. But the overall frame is, President Trump wants the u. S. Troops out of syria. He thinks thats what americans want. He may be right about that, but getting america out of syria can be done one of two ways. It can be done in a way that protects american security, American National interest, helps the Syrian People transition to peace and stability, or we can hand it over to russia and see what happens. And if President Trump goes with the latter plan, that has down sides what could go wrong, josh . What could go wrong . You can trust the russians in syria. And that means assad stays in power indefinitely. And iran stays in control. Russia expands its military campaign, and our allies, israel, jordan, you name it, all turn to russia for leadership in the middle east, for a generation, wauz they realize that the United States doesnt have the will or the capabilities to stay in the game. And the president said that meeting with Vladimir Putin could be the easiest of them all on this tornado thats a scary thought all by itself. Josh rogin, thank you, sir. And a very contentious day as embattled fbi agent peter strzok testifies before congress. I dont appreciate what was originally said being changed. Kim called the president your excellency in the letter. Noticeably absent from that nice note, any reference to denuclearization. Andrew stevens is live for us in seoul. Andrew, good morning. Good morning to you. Absolutely right, no mention at all about denuclearization. It was a nice note, i guess if youre donald trump. But on the ground, the reality is that the talks seem to be going pretty much nowhere at the moment, following that very disappointing meeting in pyongyang last week between mike pompeo and kim yongchol, the number two in north korea. Delegation, who were supposed to meet with the North Koreans yesterday to talk about repate reeting the remains of u. S. Servicemen who died in the korean war. The North Koreans did not turn up to that meeting at all. So the meeting is now on for sunday. But it does give you an idea of the state of relations going on, on the ground here. It just does not seem to be getting any traction at all. No movement from mike pompeos talks. Now theres remains, which is obviously a very political issue as well in the u. S. That is something that donald trump wants to see happen very, very quickly. But the North Koreans appear at least at the moment, still dragging their feet on that one as well, dave. Andrew stevens live for us in seoul this morning. Thank you. Leading the nominations with 22.
