The automakers recall. What it means for the safety of the future. Theres nothing more than videotaped crime scenes watched by predators lurking in the corner in the internet. A child porn arrest including a ran by, and dozens of parents. Hello, everyone. Good to have you with us. Youre watching cnn newsroom. Im john vause. Welcome to our viewers around the United States and the world. At least 31 people are dead and others wounded after an explosion in chinas northwest. President xi jinping is vowing to get the people who did this. We get the latest now from David Mckenzie reporting in from beijing. The attack happened in the Early Morning hours in western chin na. It appears according to state media that two crosscountry vehicles were traveling from north to south plowed into people near an open market and then explosives were thrown out of that vehicle. Photographs from the scene taken by people who say they were witnesses show definite car naming and people lying on the street being tended to. This area is an area where there have been a number of incidents in the past including in early may with an attack on a train station. It is unclear exactly who carried out this attack at this point, but given the nature of it, its a very potential serious escalation of the troubles that have beset that province often blamed by chinese authorities looking to have an autonomous state. Those who represent the weaker minority in the diaspora say this can often be because of local disagreements. Unclear exactly what this incident was and who exactly was behind it. It happened near the square in downtown ronchi which is a very sensitive area with many government buildings. David mckenzie, cnn, beijing. Demonstrators in nigeria plan to march on the president ial office today as they try to keep attention focused on those missing Nigerian School girls. Theyre playing in a number of other countries as well from kazakhstan, south africa, greece and argentina. In the meantime, the u. S. Is sending 80 military people to chad to search for the girls. They say the personnel are not combat troops. Theyre there to help with surveillance and reconnaissance for aircraft missions. People have said its a needle in a haystack. Its a needle in a jungle. Were talking about an area roughly the size of West Virginia and its dense forest jungle. We do still believe that these girls have been split up into small groups. For all we know, i dont know this for a fact, but they could be broken up into smaller groups yet still and be moved around so its very difficult in terms of the geography, the actual size, just square miles of what were trying to search and then of course you have this very dense jungle cover. So its going to be hard. And the u. S. Congress is trying to figure out what more the United States can do to help find the kidnapped girls. They heard some dramatic testimony wednesday from a 15yearold girl whose father and brother were both killed by boko haram. Nina jones has our report. Reporter members of the House Foreign Affairs committee had a lot of questions from two officials in the pentagon. They wanted to know what more can the u. S. Do to help the Nigerian Government do to find and arrest these girls. Before the committee they heard from Deborah Peters who is a survivor from the same town in chibuk. She came under attack in december of 2011 when she was 12 years old. They were targeted because they were christians, her father who was a pastor and her brother were killed by three members of boko haram. She spoke to reporters after that private meeting. Heres part of what she told us about what happened on that scary night. They shoot my brother twice and when they shoot my brother, thats when my dad died and my brother fall and he was moving, they shoot in his mouth. Then he died immediately. So after that i was in shock so i dont know what happens happening. They put me in the middle of my dad and my brother so they run away. The next day nobody help me throughout the night. I was in shock. So the next day the soldiers came and took them to hospital. Deborah peter is now safe. Shes living in virginia, but she knew at least one of the girls who was kidnapped in april. And by now youre familiar with that hashtag weve been seeing on twitter and other social media, bring back our girls. At the end of the meeting she brought back a sign bring back my sisters. Athena jones, cnn, washington. The white house says it has seen russian troop activity along the border but its too early to call it a withdrawal. Russia says it is pulling back a promise Vladimir Putin has made at least three times before. He says he wants to provide extra favorable conditions for the election on sunday. They say they have 30,000 troops on the border raising fears of a wider influence. They said it was hacked two months ago exposing customer data, addresses, phone numbers and birth dates but the Online Auction account wont say how many people were targeted. Its asking all of its 140 million users to reset their passwords. One computer privacy expert says thats not enough. Changing your password is helpful a couple of times i think, but after a while you sort of run out of variations on your pets names so i think after that the burden really shifts back to the companies and to congress to make sure that all of the appropriate protections are in place. I think that ebay should reexamine the kinds of privacy protective technology that theyre using so they should look at their encryption standards and they should make sure theyre using the strongest protection available. In the meantime ebay subsidiary paypal has been able to allay some fears. They say they were untouched by the breech. Police in california have located a woman who has been missing for a decade. Investigators say this man, her mothers livein boyfriend, drugged and kidnapped the victim when she was 15. They say that he later forced her into marriage and in 2012 the two had a child. Some will be convicted in state court. The conduct of the crime is not elevated one possesses one image or 1,000. Thats simply a law that makes absolutely no sense. The suspects could face up to 25 years in prison. About 1 3 remain in custody. The others were released on bond reaching from 35,000 to 100,000. Still to come on cnn newsroom, americas largest auto maar have recalled 100,000 vehicles. Well tell you whats next for gm. Well tell you what has russia and china raising hundreds of billions of dollars. It has been a record setting year for u. S. Automaker General Motors. Not in a good way. More than 2,000 recalls just since january. Poppy harlow looks at just how bad its going to get. Reporter 11 recall announcements in the past week as General Motors wraps up 13. 8 million u. S. Recalls this year alone. So this has been a banner year for g. M. In a bad way. Theyve had 29 separate recalls this year so far which has been big. Reporter gm has recalled more cars this year than it has sold since exiting bankruptcy in 2009 leaving just about everyone wondering whats going on with gm. Weve moved from a cost culture to the customer culture. Reporter the surge in recalls is because its holding itself to higher safety standards. They follow newly minted marry barras congressional testimony about why it took more than a decade to fix an ignition switch which has been tied to 13 deaths. Employees from engineers, investigators all the way up to executives were briefed on information associated with this recall. That violation cost gm the maximum 35 million fine and will likely cost the company more in victim compensation. My sincere apologies to everyone who has been affected by this recall, especially the families and friends who lost their lives or were injured. Reporter but barra is not new to General Motors. Shes been with the company for 33 years. Formerly Vice President of Global Product Development leaving lingering questions about what she knew when about product flaws in gm vehicles. I was not aware that there was this issue until the recall was introduced on january 31st. Had gm acted differently, perhaps some of this tragedy might not might have been averted. Reporter gm says thats exactly what its doing now, hence, the mountain of recalls. The last thing they want is to be accused of delaying another one. Theyre cleaning out their closets, going through and finding every issue that theyve had in the past that maybe should have been a recall and making it a recall. Reporter so far fixing all those recalled cars will cost gm 1. 7 billion this year and the stock is down 18 year to date, but what might be surprising is that all the recalls havent made a dent in gm sales which were 7 higher in april than a year ago. What gm is doing, talking, saying were going to be a good corporate citizen, but theyve said the same thing in the past. The proof is really in the pudding. Reporter so are more recalls coming soon . In an email to cnn, gm wrote, quote, we are aggressively addressing issues as they come up. Accused of haggling, china and russia have reached a huge energy deal. Beginning in 2018, russia will supply natural gas to china. Neither one will say how much beijing has paid but the agreement is expected to be worth about 400 billion. John breaks it all down. Reporter this deal between russia and china has been in the works for a decade but it was the final two days which proved to be the most difficult. The two parties needed to close a pricing gap. Russia wanted to charge the pricing it had within the European Union to china and china was looking to match what it got from central asia. Vladimir putin and xi jinping closed the gap to sign a better than 400 billion action. Theyll have two pipe lines coming from china to russia. They want to have this up and running by 2018. This was very important for Vladimir Putin on many, many levels. First and foremost, it kind of ends the isolation at least right now from the Business Community because of the sanctions and it proves that it can turn eastward growth. His priorities are china, south korea, japan, and eventually india, and thirdly we see the dramatic slowdown in russia. Economic growth is over 1 and projections of a recession in 2013. Well shift gears with two notable americans facing hate. The fbi director, find out what he said about marijuana use that drew the ire of one senator. And pat sajaks spin on Climate Change has the community a little upset. The fbi director had some explaining to do wednesday on capitol hill. James clooney told a committee he was not advocating marijuana use. He said some people wanted to smoke weed on the way to the interview. I was very disappointed on the wall street journal article may 20th in which you seem to make light of marijuana use by those who would like to work for the fbi. You say, i have to hire a great work force to compete with the cyber criminals and some of those kids want to smoke weed on the way to the interview. You say youve got to loosen up your no tolerance policy, which is havent used marijuana in three years. That will be interpreted as one more example of leadership in america dismissing the seriousness of marijuana use. I am determined not to use my sense of humor. Unfortunately there i was trying to be serious and funny. We have a three year ban. I did not say im going to change my ban, i said i have to grapple with the change in my work force. Okay. The host of the popular u. S. Game show wheel of fortune is also on the defensive after a controversial tweet about Climate Change. If we lose this game, all of society pays the price. May 10th, very hot weather. Were all going to die. Very cold weather, theres a difference between climate and weather moron. Just four days later, help, climate changing. Must send money to lots of places, a lot of money. Hurry. Time is short. Not kidding. But when asked about the unpatriotic racist remark zajac said it was in gest saying of course i was joking, mocking the namecalling that is directed at Global Warming skeptics within and without the country. While his wording is what caused the controversy, sajaks skepticism is wondered by others. I understand theres a vast consensus of scientists are saying that human activity is contributing to the changes in our climate. I think its a huge stretch to say that the majority are attributable to human activity. Reporter like sajac, they pounced. Its still a puzzle worth solving, just not 140 characters or less. That was Nischelle Turner reporting there. Lets go to pedram for the latest on the weather and theres been some stormy days recently in hong kong. Getting a lot of rain over there. We have a high probability trying to form. The storm is meandering. A little concern as you take a closer perspective at this. In western myanmar, its home to some 150,000 externally displaced people in refugee camps. The storm system doesnt look like its going to strengthen. It will pour tremendous rainfall in this region. Not something you want to see across the region. Take you out over western europe where we are also seeing pretty active weather moving in here. Severe weather quite a large possibility for the next several hours. Large hail and heavy rainfall in the forecast. This region sees 25 to 35 tornadoes a year. The threat is there from locndo to paris, even frankfurt. The temperature should be very warm. Upper 20s, in the low 80s fahrenheit. Should be close to upper 60 fahrenheit in berlin. A heat wave by definition, john, is five degrees celsius for five straight days. A lot of these places are feeling that a month removed. Four weeks away . Yes. Going to be a hot one. Thanks, p. J.
