Coronavirus deaths, with fatalities on the rise and that is key in at least 30 states. And then theres another stunning number. In a new poll out this morning, just 13 of americans say theyre satisfied with the way things are going in the u. S. Right now. Thats down 32 points since february as President Trump though again insists his administration has done an incredible job his words fighting the outbreak. Heres the president in a new and truly outrageous interview. When they hear you say everything is under control, dont wear a mask, many are older people. Whats your idea of under control . Giving them a false sense of security. Tell you what. How . A thousand americans a day are dyi dying. They are dying, that is true, it is what it is. Its under control as much as you can control it. This is a horrible plague that beset us. It is what it is he said there and there is so much more in this wide ranging, really important interview. The president also went on to repeat false claims that the u. S. Has done a better job than many other countries when it comes to battling the pandemic. Watch this. The figure i look at is death and death is going up now. Okay. Thats a thousand a day. If you look at death yeah, its going up again. Daily death. Take a look at some of the charts. Id love to. Lets look. Starting to go up again. Well, right here, United States is lowest in numerous categories. Were lower than the world. Lower than what does that mean . Lower than europe. In what . Take a look. Right here. Heres case deaths. Oh, youre doing death as a proportion of cases, but im talking about deaths of a proportion of population, thats where the u. S. Is really bad. Much worse than south korea and germany. You cant do that. You have to go back look, heres the United States. You have to go by the cases. Why not as a proportion of the population . What it says is you have if you have a case, the people that live oh, its surely a relevant statistic to say if the u. S. Has x population and x percentage of death versus south korea no, go by the cases. Look at south korea. 51 million population. Three deaths. You dont know that. I do know that, you think theyre faking their statistics, south korea, a vast country . You should watch the entire interview because its stunning and critical. Joining us now is the associate professor of medicine at emory university. Im a bit at a loss of where to start but lets start on lives lost, start on deaths and the important point that Jonathan Swan was making there about why it was so important to look at a source of proportionality to the population size. The president was trying to argue against the number that really matters here. He claims that the u. S. Response should be measured by deaths per case. In epidemiology this is called case by death ratio. The u. S. Is performing worse than chile, india, argentina, russia, south africa and bangladesh. A better way to examine the u. S. Response would be to look at the number per 100,000 population. Again, by that metric the u. S. Is the fourth worst performing country in the world. We have 4 of the worlds population and its unacceptable we lost the doctor there. Poppy, its a logic question because as Jonathan Swan noted there, deaths are on the rise in 30 states. So this idea in fact, Vice President pence a month ago, you know, in his claim that this was now under control, the deaths are coming down. There was a period of time it was coming down but now theyre coming back up again. And the reason why it matters so much, jim, right, for the health of the American People and to lower deaths in this country is because when you dont believe the facts, when you dont have an actual grasp on what is really happening then youre not going to implement all of the tools necessary to prevent more deaths. I think thats really the key here. Well, it appears that the staff is sort of humoring the president here, right . Giving him data that gives him confidence in his view as opposed to data, you know, that contradicts it. I believe we have dr. Varky back. Thank you for dealing with the technical issues in the age of zoom calls, so on. Were talking about where the actual data shows the trajectory of this outbreak here. Yeah. The data shows that we are not doing what we need to do. We have 50 to 65,000 people day. We can control it better when a thousand people die a day its irresponsible to state it is what it is. Yeah. Yeah. Well, we have Jackie Kucinich here as well, Washington Bureau chief for the daily beast. Tell us what you see in the president here. The numbers rising. Deaths rising. As we noted in the introduction to this, americas confidence in the direction of this country dropping off a cliff from above 50 in february to 15 now. The president seems to be in a deep, deep state of denial but reinforced it seems by his staff. Giving him graphs and statistics that i mean, only put the rosiest shine on what the facts show is a much more alarming story. Well, i mean, throughout his presidency, the president has tried and in some ways prevailed in bending reality to his will. Unfortunately when it comes to the coronavirus, covid19, thats not possible. The virus is still going to behave like a virus whether or not the president has a bunch of papers that says its not and that that and that the scatter shot approach that the administration has sort of kind of implemented sometimes hasnt worked. And thats why the country is in the place it is. The fact there was never a national approach. It was led up to the let to be up to the governors. You had a bunch of different approaches all across the country. We have seen it around the world. That stuff doesnt work. That moment where he was sifting through the papers and trying to hand them to Jonathan Swan to prove his point it just looked desperate. It looked like a man who was really trying to create his own reality and that reality just isnt there. Yeah. Dr. Deborah birx who is leading right along with dr. Fauci and the task force after this, the president called her pathetic, kowtowing to nancy pelosi and the criticism that she levelled at her. Our reporting from Kaitlan Collins and team reports that dr. Birx is stung by that criticism. Why does it matter so much when theres infighting within the team at the helm of solving the worst pandemic in a century . Poppy, it matters because when dr. Birx said was reality. We are months into this pandemic and again on behalf of every nurse, doctor, therapist, custodians who keep our hospitals safe, Front Line Health Care workers are exhausted when people stand up and speak to reality that elected officials try to shoot it down and try to paint a reality that doesnt fit with it. Our National Response to this pandemic should be a National Embarrassment and again, the data that actually comes from the White House Task force backs up what dr. Birx said. Theres uncontrolled spread in over 32 states in the country. And in nine, the trends are going poorly. So until if were going to be serious and we have to be serious as a society in terms of controlling this pandemic, we have got to acknowledge reality. And we have to hold electedhey try to distort reality. Enough of the conspiracy theories, enough of the lies. There are too many lives at stake and too many people dying. Yeah. So important to say over and over. Dr. Varky, thank you very much. Jackie, stay with us for a moment because there was a lot more to this interview. And they touched on a number of subjects including the recent passing of civil rights crusader congressman john lewis. Listen to this. How do you think history will remember john lewis . I dont know. I really dont know. I dont know. I dont know john lewis. He chose not to come to my inauguration. He chose i dont i never met john lewis, i dont believe. Do you find him impressive . I cant say one way or the other. I find a lot of people impressive. I find a lot of people not impressive. Do you find his story he didnt come to my inauguration. He didnt come to my state of the Union Speeches and thats okay, thats his right. Nobody has done more for black americans than i have. I understand. He should have gone. He made a big mistake. Do you find his story impressive. What hes done for this country . He was a person that devoted a lot of energy and a lot of heart to civil rights but there were many others also. What a moment there taking your impression of him out of this for a moment. Jackie kucinich, the amount of selfabsorption, measuring a man solely it seems through his own view and his own relationship with trump. Well, i mean, when jonathan said, okay, taking this out of your relationship thats an impossibility for this president. He only sees it through his own world view and how he was treated. He didnt have to answer that question because we know what the president thought of john lewis when he ordered the flags halfstaff for maybe half a day after he passed which is not normal. Its normal for this president , but to use that as a way to settle personal grievances after a civil rights icon or any incredible american whos passed away is deeply disappointing and frankly hard to wrap your mind around. And i think you have seen the reaction from lawmakers across the country having heard that. It just makes you pause and it it takes you aback that somebody could be that small to answer that way about someone like john lewis. One of many remarkable moments in that interview and elsewhere. Jackie kucinich, thank you very much. Something that youre concerned about at home, School Reopening and those concerns growing this morning. This is two more children, teenagers, have died from coronavirus complications in florida. Again, a very small percentage of cases but something thats raising concern. Well have more on that. Ladainian tomlinsabsolutely. Theres still no deal on a new round of stimulus to help the millions of americans left unemployed by this pandemic. Are there this morning emerging some signs of problem . Well discuss with the adviser to the president Kevin Hassette. New sensodyne sensitivity gum gives us the dual action effect that really takes care of both our teeth sensitivity as well as our gum issues. Theres no question its something that i would recommend. Welcome back. Georgia has reopened the Field Hospital located at the Convention Center right in the middle of atlanta because they need it to handle the surge in covid patients. Dianne gallagher is live in atlanta. We have seen the state with the steady increases in hospitalizations and other states take steps like this but ultimately not have to use those kind of those sorts of makeshift hospitals. Is this one already in use there . Sorry, having trouble with the audio. Well bring her back once we have that fixed. Oh, shes back. We have seen other communities feel the need to set up the makeshift hospitals expecting a big surge, but ultimately not having to use them. They were able to handle the excess demand. Whats happening there now . Are people already being sent to hospitals like this one . So the point of the georgia Convention Center, we have asked the Governors Office if they accepted patients yet and we have not received an answer. Monday was the first day that they were going to take new patients into the georgia world center. They opened it up for them, but last time they didnt need to use it as much when they opened it in the springtime. It can bring a total of 120 patients. Right now theyre starting with a 60bed surge. The point of this overflow hospital, if you will, is to take some of the pressure off of the area hospitals around here. They dont want to bring the sickest patients to the Georgia World Congress center. Instead, they want to bring patients who simply need those under a doctors care. Right now, 85 of the Critical Care beds are in use. Its a problem and its hovering around 85 to 90 . So hospital use and hospital beds are an issue in the state right now. But the point of this and the governor announced it two weeks ago is simply to try to alleviate that right now. In spring they didnt need to use the beds to the degree they thought they would need to. But the numbers in georgia are much worse than in spring and they have been much more consistently high in georgia than they were in springtime. Now, the governor has said that they plan to keep this open as long as they might need to. The hospitals have mostly in the atlanta area, roughly 50 of those icu beds that are full are in the greater atlanta area. As the numbers continue to stay very high at an elevated level, including high death numbers in the state of in the state of georgia, jim. But theyre working to try to keep this open to make sure that they can try to take some of the pressure off the hospitals here during this continued surge in cases that we have seen. Yeah. Of course the big picture question did they shut down too slowly and reopen too quickly . Thanks very much. Health officials in florida said two teenagers have died from complications in covid19 and why thats a small percentage of cases, its something the doctors are watching closely. Of course. Lets go to rosa flores joining us live in florida. I think that its such its tragic and an important reminder for people that young people are still vulnerable to covid and can die from it. You know, poppy, youre absolutely right. More than 38 thousand children have contracted the virus. Over 400 have been hospitaled and now a total of seven children have died from this disease. Now, i shared those statistics are Governor Desantis in a press conference and i asked what is your statewide reopening of schools . Heres what he said. Our primary policy is that parents should have a choice if they want to do distance learning, because they dont want inperson instruction right through they should have the ability to do that and for the many parents who believe their kids should be in the classroom and want that choice as well. Were working with the department of health on a district by district basis. Now, jim and poppy, thats the definition of dodging a question, he did not answer my question. What is the state plan in the state of florida, so that schools are reopen safely . I tried to followup but the governor walked out of the press conference. Thats unfortunate. Thank you for asking the important questions. Despite quote productive meetings, democrats and republicans are still far apart on a deal to provide any more additional relief to the millions of unemployed americans because of the pandemic. Welcome back. Well, unfortunately congress is no closer to reaching a new stimulus deal. When asked about the white houses willingness to reach a deal that would surpass 1 trillion, white house chief of staff meadows said this. Quote, we are so far apart right now that its not even a valid question. The bottom line is its totally unacceptable. Congress has not reached a deal after the additional 600 in Unemployment Benefits per week for millions of americans ended on friday. Heres some evidence to why that is unacceptable. As many as 23 million American Renters are at risk of losing their home and look at that. Outside an l. A. Food bank, as almost 30 million americans said they did not have enough to eat. Joining me where he served as a Senior Adviser to the president , Kevin Hassett, former chairman of the chairman of economic advisers. Great to be here. I wish it were on a better note, but the white house knew this was coming for months. They knew the additional aid would end. If you were still the Senior Adviser to the president what would you tell him to urge republicans in congress to do . Well, i think youre calling it a failure is a little bit incorrect, poppy n the following sense. Whats going on is theres a game of chicken which is regrettable between the two political parties. But, you know, i dont think that anybody is really going home until they have a bill. And i think if we look back at the history of the legislation, you know, phases one, two and three, that it was really surprisingly swift and surprisingly targeted with the ppp, the 1,200 checks, extension and so on. Because of the emergency they worked together very well. I think it was an undercovered story. So kevin, im talk about now. Im saying theyre arguing away ornament goes on the christmas tree, but theyll have a bill and it would address the problems youre talking about. But kevin the stuff expired you and i dont rely on 600 in additional aid a week to pay our rent or feed our family. Thats not our situation, but for millions of americans it is. And they stopped getting those checks on friday and thats why i dont think its too far to say that its a failure because for it was back in may that the house proposed legislation. I get that the Republicanled Senate doesnt agree with it, but they have known friday was coming for months and negotiation didnt really start until it was about to run out. Right. You know, its the negotiation thats going on and on. Secretary scalia and i were working with every states ui program to think of a way to fix the thing so we werent paying people a lot more not to go to work than to go to work and the thing is something that the white house worked on throughout. They have a strong position about how they want to do it. The house is their strong position and what always happens with legislation theyre arguing up to the end. But when the bill passed the people who didnt get their checks i think they can expect the money will be back filled and it will be filled in when the bill happens. Lets hope so. Lets hope so. It will be. The moratorium on evictions lapsing so the question is what happens to those folks . What would you advise . You saw the moodys analysis if the additional aid were brought down to 200 per week for unemployed people, nearly a million jobs could be lost at the end of the year and the unemployment could be 6 higher. Do you think that will happen . So mark zandis team, you know, mark is a big supporter of nancy pelosi. They put out analysis that i dont trust. Sometimes they put out great stuff. But if you pay people a lot more to stay at home than to go to work the idea that there are more people going to work doesnt add up. Thats not true. You saw the yale study from july. You saw it from a couple can i quote from it . Quote, we find no evidence that more generous benefits disincentivize work either at the on set or expansion as firms look for expansion over time. Wrong . Yes, it is wrong. When we get the full data it will be surely reversed. Just think of the logic of it. If you take a median family say in tennessee if they dont go to work under the 600 plan, then they get 90,000 a year and if they do go to work, its 50,000 a year. Staying at home and getting 90,000 and going to work its 50,000, it i wonder havent played with their data yet, but i really dont believe that study. All right. I believe and i have heard from so Many Americans that they want to go back to work and they want to go back to work and feel safe. Even the university of chicago numbers shows its about one in five that are doing what youre saying. But lets move on. Larry kudlow made this prediction about the economy just last week. And this was just before we saw those numbers that showed that in the Second Quarter Economic Growth in the u. S. Contracted by almost 33 . Heres what he said is coming. I dont think the economy is going south. I think its going north and i still think it will be 20 growth rate in the third and fourth quarters. Should americans, you know, prepare themselves for that, kevin. 20 to 30 growth in the next two quarters or is that too rosy . No, i think larry is about right thats what the consensus is and in fact, i think poppy, just because everything gets put through a political lens but not when you and i talk of course, one of things thats going to happen is that youll see a Third Quarter thats a 20 growth rate. So its about the biggest growth rate in u. S. History in this Third Quarter and President Trumps team is going to argue its because of the sound policies. I kind of lean towards that argument and president bidens supporters will say its going to happen anyway. Those who support biden are getting out ahead of the Third Quarter number arguing that it isnt but given i think everybody agrees that the Third Quarter will be a wild number. If you turn the economy off and on, it would have happened anyway the problem is if you have to turn it off again and this pandemic is just getting worse in many states as you know, kevin. You told me this spring if we have another wave thats going to mean another hit for the economy for sure. Listen to this from the republican. This is from Neel Kashkari who is the president of the Federal Reserve bank in minnesota. He said that the u. S. Economy will benefit only if we have a stringent nationwide lockdown for four to six weeks. Listen to this. If we dont do that, and we just have this raging virus spreading throughout the country with flareups and local lockdowns for the next year and two which is entirely possible we will see many, many more business bankruptcies thats a much slower recovery for all of us. Is he right . Well, hes absolutely right that the recovery would be much faster if we control this thing and that the numbers for the economy have surprised on the upside really. Look at the jobs numbers, the Unemployment Rate and the numbers on the disease side have been negative. The thing that surprised my compared to the conversations we had before i went back to the white house, you know, theres a second wave going on. There hasnt been much change to economic policy. Thats the thing thats surprising to me. I think that what neel is saying in pockets of the country might make sense because there are places where the Positivity Rate for the its above 20 where basically everything that you saw in new york, you know, way back in march is happening and so for me it does feel like theres some places that are too open. Thats a big deal because youre Senior Adviser to the president and youre saying it might make sense to close down for four to six weeks and we are in a second wave which the white house is not saying. Are you worried about the reality here . No, theyre getting the real numbers every day. I think that, you know, theres like a heuristic question about whats a second wave, they went up, went down. Went up again. I would say in pockets of the country theres a second wave or i guess see, heres the argument. The places that are having the waves didnt have a first wave. The places that had a first wave arent having a second wave and thats the kind of thing that the epidemiologists are talking about. If you look at the aggregate numbers for the u. S. , there are two waves. Right there in the data. Good to have you, were out of time. Thanks so much. Thanks. Well be right back. The coronavirus is wrecking state and local budgets. We should warn you, the footage is disturbing. It shows floyds final moments. Put your hand up there. Put your [ bleep ] hand up there. Put your hands on the wheel. Reporter this partial body camera video showing former Office Thomas lane pointing a gun at floyd within 25 seconds of him and j. L. King knocking on the window of the car that he was in. They were responding to the call over a fraudulent 20 bill being used across the street. The officers are seen trying to get floyd out of the vehicle. Step out and face away. Dont shoot me, please. Dont shoot me, man. Step out and face away. Im not shooting you. Reporter he is pulled from the car and then cuffed. Stop resisting, man. Im not. Reporter based on cnns viewing of the complete body camera footage this is the first of two struggles. The second much more forceful as officers try to get floyd into the police squad car. Floyd says hes claustrophobic. Soon, he is being pushed in on one side by king and pulled in on the other by lane. Seen in video obtained by the daily mail. I cant breathe, officer. Please youre fine. Please. Please. My wrist, my wrist. Reporter this is the first time george floyd says i cant breathe based on cnns previous viewing of the video. They fall out on lanes side and go to the ground to whats now become an infamously familiar position. Floyds neck under the knee of derek chauvin. Okay, officer i cant breathe. Reporter this is from the perspective of kings camera. Not long after, lane asks if floyd should be moved. Please, please. Please. I just worry about it. Okay. Reporter floyd loses consciousness and chauvin is charged with murder and manslaughter and king and lane are charged. None of them have entered a plea though tau and lane asked for their cases to be dismissed. The attorneys for the four officers declined comment or did not respond. Now the attorney for the george floyd family, ben crumb did release a statement that reads in part, the more evidence you see, the more unjustifiable George Floyds torture and death at the hands of the police becomes. The judge in this case has yet to rule on a motion filed by cnn and other organizations to try and fully and publicly release the entirety of this video. Jim, poppy . Just turns my stomach to watch that. Omar jimenez, thanks very much. Well, President Trump is stepping up the attacks on mailin voting. He is now threatening executive action. Well discuss. Welcome back. President trump is stepping up his attacks on mailin voting for the november election. The president claimed during a White House Briefing yesterday that he has the right to sign an executive order addressing the issue, though he admits, quote, we havent got therein yet. Joining me now to discuss this and several other issues, adam kinzinger, republican from the state of illinois. Good to have you on. Thanks for taking the time. Thanks. So when the president floated the idea delaying the election, you tweeted in response, election dates, theyre set by congress, i will oppose any attempts to delay the 2020 election. I just wonder, now that the president is threatening, at least, an executive order to address or restrict mailin voting, would you oppose such a move . Well, wolf, look, i think its a statebystate decision. There are some states that have had mailin voting, some states that dont. I think the constitution is pretty clear that its states that make those decisions. So im not sure what the president s executive order would look like. But i do share his concern about it, though. Because its one thing to have absentee ballots like illinois does, but then to say were going to mail ballots to everybody thats registered. And then you look in new york right now, and they threw out 15,000 ballots or so, some because they didnt have a postmark, some had late postmarks. Youre really opening a can of worms when you say, if youre down on election day, just send in all the ballots that havent been filled out and maybe well count that. Its really concerning and not a partisan issue, in my mind. Wouldnt the focus be now, given the pandemic and understandable concerns about going to polling stations in the middle of a pandemic and the risk that voters would have to take, wouldnt it make sense to make the focus on the right to mailin vote. Youre a service member. I image you would have taken advantage of absentee ballots, wouldnt the focus be on securing that rather than attacking that as a way to register your vote if three months time . Thats what i would do. I would say its important to secure this. Its important to, if its not an old 20th or 19th century way of mailin balloting, maybe its something online, maybe its being able to vote early, social distancing, theres ways to do it. The bottom line, and ive said this when its the president attacking election day or if its democrats attacking things, is like the most important thing for a republic is that people that know their vote counts. If you dont think your vote counts, its the only time you really have a say in government, thats when you lose faith in stul institutions. Anything we can do to secure that is good. I want to move on to the stimulus. Still a wide gap between republicans and democrats on the next step here. Particular issue of agreement is extension of the 600 a week enhanced unemployment benefit. I wonder, is there a middle ground you would accept between the 2 churnlgurrently offered Republican Leadership and the 600 that democrats are seeking. Would you be willing to vote for something that meets in the middle . Yeah, of course. And i think, you know, the issue with this unemployment is not so much the amount. I dont even think its so much when it exspires, but its the fact that this has to be temporary. We cannot restructure in an emergency our entire unemployment system. And ill tell you what, when we got elected to congress, we had these emergency Unemployment Benefits from the 2008 crash and it took two years to finally let those expire. My friends on the other side of the aisle kept saying, literally, this is nancy pelosi, republicans are taking food out of the mouths of children. And all we were saying is, this is a temporary thing. I have no problem whether the amount is extended. But the important thing is, we need to understand this is temporary for the pandemic, not a permanent kind of new benefit out there forever. Okay. I want to talk to you about russia and threats to u. S. Service members, because i know that this is an issue close to your heart, as a veteran yourself. And still a member of the reserves here. On friday, President Trump says he thinks the allegation that russia paid taliban fighters to kill america soldiers and other russia hoax, as you know, he even gave russia a pass to supplying arms to the taliban in 2018, saying, well, the russians did that in the 80s anyway. In your view, is the president emboldening russia by not standing up to them, not warning putin away . You know, i think its possible. Look, i dont want to make that accusation, but ill say this. What i know about Vladimir Putin is that he will advance until he hits a brick wall. In syria, we killed over 400 russian mercenaries and you didnt hear a lot from Vladimir Putin for a long time. He knows the United States way out empowers him, but hell advance as much as he needs to. On the bounty issue, its not as cut and dried as it reads. Im very concerned about it. We know that russia splupplied e taliban under the guise of fighting isis, which is completely untrue. And so, i think that has to be taken seriously. But look, you have the iranians that killed 600 americans and beyond that and were targeting more. And theres a lot of people that are saying, this is a huge issue, that said it was a huge issue that we killed soleimani. I think we need to go after anybody that targets american soldiers, period. Thats what im asking. You served in afghanistan. Wouldnt you want the commander in chief to be 100, 1,000 clear, i aint gonna let this happen . Yes. So heres the deal, the intel isnt cut and dried, but i think the president needs to be clear that if its found to be accurate, there will be serious repercussions. Final question, were three months away from an election. Senator ron johnson, republican, is working, we know, with a prorussian ukrainian lawmaker, it seems, on gaining dirt on the democratic candidate for president. In your view, is that accepting foreign help in the election and should that be barred . Honestly, i dont know anything about that. Ill say this. I dont want any prorussian elements anywhere, involved anything near our election. I dont want any antirussian foreign elements involved in our elections. I want only americans involved.
