At any moment Florida Governor ron desantis will hold a press conference as the state prepares for a direct hit from dorian. Hes already warned residents to stock up on enough food, water and medicine to last yeast a oo week but supplies in stores already running low. Floridians dealing with empty store shelves, long lines at the gas pumps as you can see there. We have correspondents all over the state of florida as we cover every angle of this storm. Lets go first to chad myers at the cnn weather center. Whats the latest on its strength and the track . The pressures going down, which means the strength is going up. The wind speeds are going up to 110, so now if were already 110, 130 or 140, its not that big of a stretch. This will now have almost 72 hours in the very warmwater, so thats where we are right now and making landfall at 140 Miles Per Hour as a category 4 hurricane, as it makests way onshore itll lose a bit of punch. Thatll be monday night into Tuesday Morning there and for orlando it doesnt go much farther, only about 5 Miles Per Hour and that will cause flooding, significant flooding and well keep you uptodate on that. We are just asking floridians please heed these directives from our local folks. Theyre considering a variety of factors and obviously monitoring the storms path so those decisions are not made lightly. If youre in an evacuation zone and youre ordered to evacuate, please do so. Put your safety first. Better to evacuate and then not end up hitting you than to remain in there and end up being in jeopardy of loss of life. Know if youre in an evacuation zone, know which zone youre in and know your vacation route. Now we in terms of our highways here, the Florida Department of transportation has already cleared the shoulders of all our major highways like i95 and i75. So theyve been swept cleared. Well be opening those for traffic once Evacuation Orders are handed down. As of right now the dot has not identified any abnormal traffic patterns but we know obviously once counties make determinations for Evacuation Orders youre going to see people start to get on the road. Nonessential enclosures, they reduce capacity throughout the state are being opened to deal with the storm. Fuel is an issue. There are gas stations that have run out of feel. We in the Emergency Declaration waived service and truck rates for fuel trucks so we can increase capacity for fuel being brought in. Were also going to be starting today implementing florida Highway Patrol escorts for fuel trucks so we can increase fueling in critical parts of the state. And theres some parts of the state where you have major lines for gas, cars are lined up. It makes it more difficult for truck tuesday get in and replenish the gas supply so we think those escorts will help with that. We have a lot of fuel in florida, its just that we have limited capacity to bring it from the port to the gas stations, because you can only have so many trucks at one time doing that. So recognizing that, weve worked with fema to get fuel from outofstate. So fema and jared have worked with mississippi, alabama and georgia to waive their service and truck rates so we can facilitate fuel coming in from outofstate. That is happening as we speak. Tin urms of these Nursing Homes thats been an issue in the past. Making site visits or calls to all facilities where the state does not have updated info about generators. As you know we now have a website through the agency where you can see whos got the generators, who doesnt, and so we think statewide about 120 that we dont have the information for. So theres going to be site checks. Theres going to be phone calls to make sure that they have a plan to deal with folks that are in their care. And then once the storm passes, therell be spot checks done in conjunction with the department of health to see where there may be needs after the storm and see wo has lost power. The florida fish and Wildlife Conservation and commission is preparing officers and resources for potential deployments in the coming days, using a variety of specialized equipment using atv, air boats and drive vehicles. Jared has also requested vehicles from the federal government that are able to navigate some potentially flooded streets and obviously the general is sensitive to that as well. Youre looking at a potentially significant water event throughout portions of of the state so we want resources to be able to navigate that. There have been a number of School Closures. Daytona state college, eastern Florida State college, indian river state college, seminal state college, the university of Central Florida has issued closures starting today through tuesday. The School Districts in Martin County and vulucia county have also issued there september 3rd. Our Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is extending the deadline for local applicants and visit florida has act activated the visit floor accommodation web portal so if theres Evacuation Orders you can get a sense of what would be available in terms of accommodations. We have close to a million gallons of water jared has requested i think another 2 million for fema. We have almost 2 million meals ready for distribution. Now, we have not necessarily received a request for that yet, but we stand ready to distribute the meals when we can. And then were also working with some of the retailers like publix and walmart to make sure their shelves are restocked. We want that water going back on the shelve because a lot of people are preparing, which is good but the flip side of that is the water is going off the shelf and requires restocking in a quicker fashion. We still have some degree of uncertainty, but i think if you look at the different forecasts you see potentially places in south florida, potentially going all the way up the coast of florida. Some forecasts have it going through the center of the state similar to kind of what irma did in terms of going up the middle. And you still have some forecasts that say its going to go across the state and end up in the gulf of mexico. So weve just got to be prepare frd all those circumstances. I think the propabilities of all those is not necessarily equal, but its much better to be prepared and not have to face it then go into one of these things unprepared. And finally i did speak with the president on wednesday night, and the administration has been great and theyve assured us theyre going to provide all the resources we need. The president was scheduled to leave the country and has canceled that trip because i think the administration recognizes this really, really serious event. With that im happy to take some questions for myself or jared or the general. We are mobilizing as we speak. We expect about 2,000 soldiers and airman from the Florida National guard mobilize by end of day today. By end of day tomorrow probably be doubled by about 4,000. Were trying to be responsive but not overzealous in implementing whatever requirements the department of Emergency Management levies on us. So were prepared to respond. We have 12,000 soldiers in the state and everyone that is able and in the state not deployed will be ready to step up as needed. In addition we have Emergency Management assistance compacts with various states in the Southern Region especially to be able to fill in any voids that we have or gaps in our formations that might need specialties li specialties like aviation, engineering. The general is talking with other states. We anticipate getting support from other states. I know i spoke with the governor of alabama and she authorized some National Guard personnel from alabama, so that is ongoing. And im sure we will provide those updates once we get them. Governor, this is just observation. I notice theres a lot more fema personnel and the trucks across the street are now right here in the parking lot. Is this a change on your part with the new administration or is this just happenstance, or is it a new approach . I think this is just what we planned, right . Im not exactly familiar in terms of how fema did, in terms of how they were, but when we did the exercise this is how we anticipated it happening. And, you know, jared has developed a really Good Relationship with folks at fema. And they really appreciate all the hard work hes doing, so i think were on the same page and i think well be able to work constructively together. This is your first major hurricane as governor. Im wonder if theres as much of a learning curve for you going into this, and do you see your political future tied to how the state performs in this . Were trying to protect the state, protect people and assist these local folks who are out there. Theyre all activated now, you know, as best we could. I grew up in florida so im not a stranger to hurricanes. And of course weve had a number of active hurricane seasons recently. As a u. S. Congressman we had Hurricane Matthew where my district was the district most affected. Granted, that could have been worse than the path it ultimately took. And obviously hurricane irma, that affected almost everybody in the state. So i have a lot of experience just understanding kind of how some of the wheels go in motion. And then weve done an awful lot with Hurricane Michael since ive taken office. And so this is something that we didnt want to see a hurricane this season. I know jared and i both did what we thought we could in different respect tuesday try to head that off, but we also prepared for one and did a major hurricane exercise. I would ask jared, hey, whats it look like in the caribbean because we know this is something that could potentially happen. At the end of the day were going to be working really, really hard to do our best to help the folks in the state of florida. What can you tell us about cellphone coverage and how long people should expect to go out . That was a big problem at least for some providers after Hurricane Michael, and thats whats everyones on and going to want to know about. Weve been listening there to the governor of florida ron desantis as the state of florida makes preparations for Hurricane Dorian. One, he said theyll be making determinations about evacuations today. He said theres already been School Closures and another big issue is the shortage of fuel. The only thing thats good is if we get into the cone as and we know its going to start slowing down, it gets a shove to the north and just ends up out here in the ocean. That is the only thing that could actually help this state at this point in time. I dont know where or what town, people will get storm surge 12 feet. Not just on the beach but in the back bays, up the rivers, into the canals are people have their boats. Therell be 8 to 10 feet of water there. Theres going to be 20 inches of rainfall. Not only are you pushing the saltwater into those creeks, canals, bayus, back waters and the beach that will rain on top of it. A lot of times well have this is wind event or surge event, well, this is all three. There will be surge, wind, all of those things depending on where it hits. I wont say its going to be north of miami but thats the middle ground at this point. And the storm is still getting stronger. We know that because the Hurricane Hunters are in there, theyre finding lower pressure and higher winds, and this is not what we need. This is big event for what could be millions of people. That is the latest track there. We just heard from the republican Governor Ron Desantis as preparations are being made. Already schools closing as well. Her name debra thomas, 69 years of age. See says she remembers hurricane andrew very clearly shooch she said she described it as its aftermath as an atomic bomb hitting homestead. She lives in a mobile home so she was here buying batteries and board to board up her home. I live in a mobile home, so i stand to be homeless but thats not really whats worried me. I have animals. I can replace my home, but i cant my animals. Ive been through this a couple of times in the last 15 years and this is the worst so far. Reporter and she plans to ride out the storm with her daughter in an actual house, but she also said if an Evacuation Order is issued, that she does not plan to evacuate. Now, we just heard from Governor Ron Desantisthality the National Guard has not only been activated but could be mobilized as early as today. Officials asking people to have seven days worth of water, food and medicines at the ready, at the go. Thats why a lot of those items are flying from the shelves. Weve seen empty shelves all across this state and also very long lines of people trying to get gas. And jim, in that press conference with Governor Desantis he also mentioned because he has declared a state of emergency within this state and 67 counties that allows them to bring in more fuel to help as people try to get gas to prepare for potential evehicles. Are you seeing a lot of cancellations because of the storm . Yes, a trumepd s amouemendou cancellations and people need to protect their property. And generally speaking in our particular area they come from miami and st. Petersburg and so theyre home battening up the hatches and taking care of their children, their pets, taking care of their families. And so we see a tremendous decline in occupancy and ca cancellations. Now, of course, lives, safety is the number one concern at this point. But are you able to estimate how much money has been lost to your industry as a result of the storm, particularly in a weekend when i imagine you have a lot of visitors . So this would be lucrative . I dont have to the actual figures but i can tell you this for every dollar spent renting a room 21 cents would go to the hospitality industry. 27 cents would go to shopping, the malls, nick knacks and stuff like that, and 52 cents would go to restaurants and amusements. So as we dont bring in the tourists, everybody in the area will go down and thats unfortunate. But in daytona beach, and ive been here for many, many years and seen many hurricanes come through. The best idea is to take precaution and take care of everybody and milwaukee sure the guests are safe somewhere. And i know eventually what will happen if the storm moves and well be readied for it. The evac and Police Departments are ready for it. And we worry about our employees, about our guests and so we will take precautionary measures. If it means to shutdown the entire daytona beach, beach coast we will do that. And protect everybody and strangely well reopen and well be having a great season after that. We did it after mathews, after irma, and well recoop again. And the governor is exactly right, we have to worry about human lives and whats going on and the dollars will flow. Jackie, the other circumstance here just briefly is that it appears a reporter then shared what was discussed in the offtherecord context, and thats what then led to the firing. And so this is why because you can get them fired. On another topic, of course were just a few months away from the iowa caucuses, first voting in the 2020 president ial election. The dnc is now blocking iowa from having caucusing by phone and now for folks at home may not remember, but iowa has a special caucus structure for these early voting. People come, they meet, they discuss and then they state their preference. Were going to interest folks participating by phone, and they stopped it because theyre saying of concerns about hackers getting into the system. Whats the significance of this . Look, were seeing two sides to this. On the one side youre seeing democrats looking for ways to activate more voters to make sure they are going to vote and participate in the president ial primary. At the same time the fact this new change is being blocked really demonstrates the fear Democratic Party officials have about some kind of hacking or meddling in the election in the sense that making this change would expose voting to a bevy of a different kind of hacking techniques. And as you know this is something thats a concern in district and states across the country here at a time when the president clearly has not prioritized Election Security, when everyone involved including the department of Homeland Security says this is a prime concern, that not just russia but china and other countries will attempt again to interfere in the process. As you know there was a report released last month by senate that detail in 50 states russians tried to get into election systems in all 50 states and in illinois they were in a position where they could have deleted voter data. So there was no evidence that they did, and, you know, the dnc in particular is sensitive to this because of course they were hacked in 2016. Buts its not only President Trump. Its majority leader mitch mcconnell, moved a whole range of Election Security bills despite the recommendations of the senate intel committee. Will that happen when they return, well have to see. But the fact that the congress hasnt acted either in the senate, not in the house is also problematic. To make these voting systems a little bit more universal because every state does things differently. Another topic, daniel, alabama governor, republican governor kate ivy apologized yesterday for participating in a skit that involved black face in college, the chwas in the 1960s. Will we see a similar reaction to what we saw with the governor of virginia, northam when it was discovered his yearbook in college had him apparently although he denied it later in black face. What are the repercussions here . The republican officials i talked to as i reported this story yesterday were really skeptical thered be much of a fall out. Governor ivy they said was very sincere in her apology and her office did go out of its way to share the audio of the incident with the members of the alabama congressional delegation. And i dont in virginia i dont really see ivy stepping down. The fact northam is still governor of virginia shows ivy can whether Something Like this. Hes taking heat for misremembering or perhaps combining the details of a story he often tells on the trail about a Wounded Service member turning down a medal. Its the division really is the significance of gaffes like this in the current environment. How significant in your view . I dont think we know yet how significant it will be because we havent seen the repercussions yet since this just happened yesterday. Certainly the one thing is biden wasnt propping himself up. He was talking about someone else. And that does matter. He wasnt necessarily lying about something he did. But as you said it was conflating a couple different stories. And it goes onto the unfortunate narrative that biden is not remembering things perhaps like he used to, and that is concern for some voters. But as weve seen his numbers have not moved. Diana sanchez says no one helped her even after she told the guard she was having contractions. Reporter so the Denver Sheriff Department sent us a statement which read in part mrs. Sanchez was in the medical unit and under the care of Health Professionals at the time she gave birth. To make sure nothing like this happens again, the Denver Sheriff Department has changed its policies to ensure that pregnant inmates who are in any stage of labor are now transported immediately to the hospital. It also said that an internal investigation was done and it found that its deputies followed their protocols and acted appropriately under the circumstances. Now, a spokesperson made clear to me over the phone that, look, it is the responsibility of those Denver Health nurses to ensure that inmates get proper medical care. We reached out to Denver Health.
