Which wayia look at it. Yeah, absolutely. We know that the president has been unnerved by that surge in migrants crossing illegally into the United States from the u. S. mexico border. Its why he pressured his officials to close parts of the u. S. mexico border. Why he sought to revive the family separation policy. Now were also learning one of the ideas the president and his hardline immigration advisers, notably Stephen Miller had, was to essentially take some of those migrants who were arrested at the southern border and release them in these socalled sanctuary cities where many of the president s political opponents are elected and work from. Those democratic cities in particular, San Francisco is one of them, as you mentioned. This is the president essentially taking one of these issues that he has so often talked about and lamented the release of some of these migrants from detention facilities and sought to turn it against his political opponents. The House Speaker Nancy Pelosis spokeswoman put a statement out lambasting this, saying the extent of this administrations cynicism and cruelty cannot be overstated, using human beings including little children as pawns in their warped game to perpetuate fear and demonize immigrants is despicable. We know, of course, that what followed this, beyond the president pressuring the Homeland Security secretary, kirstjen nielsen, Stephen Miller, senior white house adviser, pressuring officials at the department of Homeland Security. Now some officials at the department of Homeland Security believe that may be in part some of the resistance from dhs may have been part of the reason why the white house has sought to purge some of the top wrungs of the department of Homeland Security in particular. In particular, dhss general counsel who has been among the officials who is still at dhs but has been rumored to be on the chopping block from the white house. Again, we know that Stephen Miller has been newly empowered by the president to take charge of this immigration agenda. He was behind this idea or one of the people at least behind this idea. It does raise the question, what comes next now, now that Stephen Miller and the president appear to be on this path of a hardline immigration agenda. Okay. Got it. Jeremy diamond, thanks for the reporting. Meantime, the attorney general, bill barr, said in congressional testimony this week under oath, well see the Mueller Report within a week. Any day now. How much is Congress Really going to see, and how much will the public see . Lets go to manu raju on the hill with details. It did seem like in his second day of testimony, manu, bill barr differentiated between how much would be redacted for congress and where hell willing to work with congress to see more than the public. Is that how you read it . No question, he said there will be redactions in the initial report that congress and the public would see and he said he would work with the Judiciary Committee of the house and senate to see what additional redactions, things they could allow the members see behind the black lines. That is not going to be enough for democrats who want to see the full report and already Judiciary Committee chairman jerry nadler made it clear he plans to issue a subpoena immediately afterwards to see the full report. Thats going to set the stage for a legal fight. Now, the political fight has already been intensifying. The president continues to go after the Mueller Report, the investigation, tweeting that its a treasonous hoax. Republicans are largely aligning themselves with the president. I spoke with one of those republicans, marco rubio, of florida, who sits on the Senate Intelligence committee. I asked about the very strong words the president has been leveling against the Mueller Investigation, and he said the president is right to do it. The president feels very strongly about it. Obviously, hes the one being accused of colluding with a foreign government. And this report came out that shows that was not the case, and so i think he feels vindicated, and fracnkly, i know hes angry about what hes been put through. The letter came out, not the finding. The conclusion was there was no collusion. On that, thereits pretty firm. The president has stood accused of colluding with Vladimir Putin to win an election and hes angry about it. The only thing we have seen is the fourpage letter from bill barr that summarizes the top line findings of the Mueller Report. Very few words are actually quoted. It did quote the Mueller Report, saying they could not establish that the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the russian government as part of the 2016 interference efforts. The question is when we see the details, how will people respond, how will the president respond . Will it undercut the president s argument that he was totally exonerated . One reason why hes going on the offensive ahead of this report, and well see how the republicans ulrepublican s ultimately react when we see all the details. Thank you very much. Joining me is the lovely s. E. Cupp. Host of s. E. Cupp unfiltered. I always see you on tv and never in person. Thank you for being with me. We have like opposite hours. Lets start with republican strategy in the party as we wait for the Mueller Report and back into the migrant stuff. Tom davis, former republican representative from northern virginia, former chair of the nrcc said, quote, the party is going to go along with trump because its not what it was two years ago. You had people leave the party and come in, and its all around him. Its not the same Republican Party. You know, depending on what we see from the Mueller Report, is he right . Yeah. As much as trump has purged various departments, the Republican Party has been purged as well. The charlie dents, the jeff flakes. Yeah. Have either been pushed out or have decided not to run. Its no longer their party. What youre left with is a bunch of loyalists for the most part. There are some exceptions. We have been reporting all week from some of the pushback from gop senators against some of the things the president has wanted to do, but largely, when it comes to these issues of defending trumps character, defending him against the Mueller Report, republicans have largely gotten in line. What about with immigration . Given this New Washington post reporting that cnn has matched overnight that the president , for admittedly political reason, at least in part, this winter asked his officials in ichs to ship migrants apprehended at the border to sanctuary cities like pelosis city of San Francisco to basically get back at them . Two points. One, this isnt really surprising. This administration has done a politics of pr, whether its the north korean summit that was never meant to really go anywhere, or even a border wall. A lot of people dont think thats a real policy solution. Its more of a pr stunt. That is what this administration is comfortable doing. Pr. Are republicans going to fall in line with Something Like that . I dont know. It didnt happen so republicans dont have to defend it because it didnt happen. But the politics of pr and the politics of revenge is very much in line and character with this administration. Let me just also say, i think to a lot of people, you know, across the country, they would think, well why not . This would be the logical conclusion of a sanctuary city. I mean, this is an idea my dad might come up with. Its not a policy solution. It is a policy of a politics of revenge and pr. But i think actually, to a lot of people who think sanctuary cities are bad and also not a policy solution, they might say why not. I think its interesting because as the Washington Post points out at one point in the reporting, a month after the president was pushing his immigration officials to do this, he gave this speech in kansas and talked about how horrible sanctuary cities are and dangerous for the country. But at the same time, wanted to put more people there who he thinks makes them more dangerous. Its all pr. If youre trying to find an intellectually consistent thread in his statements, dont. Its really very simple. We dont have to overthink it. Its a pr stunt. He wanted that pr moment of this dumping of Asylum Seekers in a sanctuary city. And say hey, you like this policy . Well, heres the conclusion of it. Right. And put democrats in a pickle. Yeah, its not a solution. What about for the party overall, for the Republican Party . Is it a good thing to have Stephen Miller essentially be if not the face of immigration policy of the party, the like backbone of it . Youre asking me . Yeah. No, but i dont think donald trump is a great face of the Republican Party, and i think in four to eight to ten years, the Republican Party is really going to have to pay for a lot of the political decisions that were made. Notice what you said, four to eight to ten. Im not the Republican Party these days. Youre a smart voice in this though. Four to eight to ten years. Ia dont think they pay for this as a party in 2020 . I dont think so. The current democratic field and the messages theyre running, i havent seen yet a winning counter to trump. What would the winning democrat, counter be to be on Something Like this . Sanctuary cities arent widely popular, and you have to acknowledge, abolishing i. Krempt, also not a solution. Both parties need to grapple with Real Solutions. The problem with immigration is, for too long, its been politically profitable to leave it broken. For both parties. Because they can run on a broken immigration system, and they can fundraise on a broken immigration system. Thats a problem both parties have to reconcile. And so if you want to beat trump in 2020, i think you have to acknowledge hard facts about immigration and come up with Real Solutions that dont scare half the country. David axelrod did this great interview thats airing tomorrow night with beto orourke, and down at the border in el paso, we heard part of it last hour, but there you have a democrat who has, you know, shown some signs of being a little more centrist in his past, who is from a border not only state but city. Right. Right. Right. Someone like that, threatening to republicans on the immigration front . More of a challenge . I think hes trying, so theres this divide in the Democratic Party. Are we going to sort of traffic in fear, antitrump, or be hopeful and optimistic . I think hes trying to be the latter, the hopeful, optimist, always smiling candidate of the future. But he still really wants to go to some of the policies that progressives are pushing him toward. Thats a tough thing to do because the progressive far left policies are in some ways fear based. They rely on a fear about Climate Change and, you know, antiamnesty republicans. Its a tough line for him to navigate. I think tonally, hes right. Hes got to figure out his policies, and asking the American People to decide what they should be you need specifics. And winning a primary is so different than winning a general, too. Right . Sure. And especially this one. This go around, its going to be a tough hard right turn. See you on the show tomorrow night. Thanks for having me. We appreciate it. Watch s. E. In just a few months, the mayor of south bend, indiana, Pete Buttigieg has gone from a relatively unknown mayor to a steadily rising democratic 2020 contender. Two new polls out and they say a lot. Iowa and New Hampshire polling shows buttigieg sits just below joe biden and bernie sanders. By the way, who have been in politics for decades. This all comes as the buttigieg fight with Vice President mike pence heats up over pences stance on gay rights. In an appearance set to air on ellen later today, he responds to the Vice President s accusations hes attacking his faith and the First Amendment. Watch this. Im not interested in feuding with the Vice President. But if he wanted to clear this up, he could come out today and say hes changed his mind. That it shouldnt be legal to discriminate against anybody in this country for who they are. Thats all. Lets discuss all of it with our editor at large, chris cillizza. Good morning, my friend. Well get to the fascinating polls in a moment because i geeked out on those numbers. Lets listen to more of dana bashs exclusive interview with the Vice President at the border about this issue just yesterday. I hope that pete will offer more to the American People than attacks on my Christian Faith or attacks on the president as he seeks the highest office in the land. He argues that your quarrel is with him as a gay man and that he says i was born this way, and this is the way god made me. Thats just not your belief . Well, i think petes quarrel is with the First Amendment. How so . All of us in this country have the right to our religious beliefs. I mean, thats quite a counterpunch. That he basically doesnt believe in the First Amendment. Where does this go . They were pretty close, i mean, the Vice President considered him a friend. Yeah, and i would say i think one fascinating thing here is i think a lot of people are amazed they were once friendly. Thats the reality of a governor and a mayor of a relatively big city in your state. You have to get along oftentimes to get things done. Not everything works in this binary unless its new york city, chris cillizza. Unless its new york city. Thats a notable exception. But look. Theyre sort of arguing past one another in ways that are politically advantageous. I dont think Pete Buttigieg is saying that mike pence doesnt have the right to say what he wants. Hes saying, look, your policies that you have backed as a house member, as governor of indiana, and then as Vice President , would discriminate against who i am. What i was born as. Mike pence is saying look, im entitled to my religious beliefs. Those two things arent theyre not daggers drawn opposites. Again, theyre sort of making similar arguments to one another, but not the same argument to one another. But its politically advantageous for both. All right, so thats interesting, too. Sure. Especially right now. So lets look at this polling. Because stunning any way. You have 9 is where hes polling, where buttigieg is polling in this new poll out of iowa behind sanders and biden. 11 of New Hampshire is behind sanders and biden. They have both been in government i think longer than buttigieg has been alive. And the other two, Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren we have talked about since they basically won their offices. One is a senator from a giant state, california. The other is a senator who became a National Figure when she ran for senate in 2012, and honestly was a National Figure before that. What i would say is the race looks like this at the moment. I think you have a top tier that is biden and sanders. And that doesnt mean it will always be that way, but theyre separated in terms of polling. The best known, they have been around the most. What is stunning is the second tier, maybe its 1a and 1b, because i dont know if its a huge separation, but the second tier, the mayor of south bend, indiana, is in the second tier. I cant tell you how many i had a ton of conversations, Pete Buttigieg has been talking about running for president for a while. I had a number of conversations with his aides, with people who had met him, about this guy has real potential. I would always say, absolutely, but hes the mayor of south bend, indiana. Youre competing against these huge titans in terms of politics. People who have been building these organizations. People who have been in the National Political sphere for a long time. Maybe if something happens for him, it will happen in january or february of 2020. Right . He catches a moment. Well, it happened in march of 2019. And i would say, poppy, look at the polling, look at his money. 7 million raised in the First Quarter of 2019. It suggests theres a sustainability there. You sometimes see these herman cain, for example, who is much in the news. Remember, herman cain was leading the 2012 republican president ial race. It was up and immediately down. My guess is that Pete Buttigieg is here to stay. Hell have struggles, but it is amazing hes propelled himself into the conversation of credible people who could be the nominee. Its remarkable. Well keep watching it. Chris, great to have you. Thanks, my friend. Have a good weekend. All right, so coming up on april 22nd, we thought we would just have a few town halls for you. Seven years, the wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, is prepare to fight extradition to the United States. On thursday, british authorities arrested assange, carrying him out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in london against his will. The u. S. Justice department then charged assange with conspiring with Chelsea Manning to hack department of Defense Computers back in 2010. Im joined now by Julian Assanges longtime attorney here in the uk, jennifer robinson. Thanks very much for taking the time. Youre welcome. You said thursday, and to be clear, youre not alone in making this argument about press freedom. You said this arrest sets a dangerous precedent that any journalist can be extradited for prosecution in the u. S. For publishing truth about the United States. This is not about the publishing. Its about the access to the information. U. S. Prosecutors are arguing assange provided Chelsea Manning with electronic help to get the information. Whats your response to that . Well, while the allegation itself or the charge itself is hacking, if you look at the factual allegations, actually, it boils down to having communicated with the source and having provided assistance with assisting her with protecting her anonymity in the context. So any journalist who any journalist should be concerned about these charges. The factual allegations are in effect provided a source of protecting their own identity. That as a factual matter is absolutely in use gathering question and a free speech question. Let me ask you this because the argument here, and again, to use laymans terms because theres some sort of electronic specifics to this, that assange and wikileaks gave Chelsea Manning a way to break in, in effect, to department of Defense Computers by acting as an administrator, which then gave him, we know, like when you have someone working on your office commute, gave him power to get into other parts. Not just about protecting his identity. Thats about gaining access. To preface this, saying these are the allegations. None of them have been proven. Did he provide that help . It does boil down to the allegations as they read on the indictment boil down to providing assistance to a source to protect their identity. Now, broadly understood was he providing more help than that . Thats a factual matter to be determined. Looking at this, this absolutely encapsulates what journalists do all the time in terms of communication with sources and touching on the news process. This is a First Amendment question and thats why free speech groups across the United States are concerned about the impact this will have and the chilling impact this may have on journalists everywhere. U. S. Authorities have said that the Justice Department could bring additional charges beyond this charge of hacking. Are you concerned hell face charges under the espionage act as well . That was one of the provisions under which the grand jury investigation had been opened up. We understood that was part of the investigation through the questioning taking place over the past, since 2010, for a long time now. We are concerned, but well wait to see what happens from the United States. What were pleased to see and want to make sure that people understand, that the indictment relates to publications back in 2010, and actions back in 2010. This relates to the iraq war logs, the afghan war logs. U. S. Diplomatic cables. Revelations of war crimes, of corruption and human rights abuse. Thats what this relates to. Of course, the other subject of great interest in the u. S. Is russias interference in the 2016 election. Do you believe u. S. Prosecutors once hes in the states if he doesnt successfully fight extradition will ask him about his alleged role in russias interfeerps in the election. The Mueller Investigation is over. There are no indictments associated with anyone with wikileaks and we dont expects there to be. This indictment again doesnt relate to anything to do with the 2016 election publications and we would say wikileaks should not even be a matter of criminal investigation, if we look at other media organizations like wikileaks who published that material, politico, the intercept. Its about how you get that material. This is the essential question here. Of course, i get information from sources. All of them say through an intermediary. Possibly. I get information from sources but i dont in effect give them the key to the filing cabinet to take the information out against the law. Thats the essential difference here. But thats not the allegation against assange with respect to that material. It is with respect to Chelsea Mannings material because theyre saying manning gave her electronic help to hack into. Those materials. Youre aligning the two. The u. S. Election publications and the earlier publications. Again, this relates to communications between a journalist and a publisher and their source and it touches on news gathering. I was referring back to manning. Lets get to russia here. As you know, u. S. Intelligence views wikileaks as a middleman in russias interference in the election. A cutout, as they call it. Secretary of state mike pompeo has called them a nonhostile interference. Guccifer 2. 0, the Russian Hackers who stole this information apparently from Democratic Party officials, et cetera, gave that information to wikileaks. Where did wikileaks get the information . Wikileaks has made clear that they didnt get it from a state source. Thats a nonstate source, Russian Hackers with ties to the kremlin. Theyre not wearing uniforms of the russian government. Does it leave it open he received it from guccifer 2. 0 . In any event, all the media organizations that published that material are then recipients of that material and published that. Why are they not subjected to the same allegations . Because of the way they got the information. Just to be clear, are you leaving open the possibility the material, the stolen emails, hillary clinton, john podesta, did come from guccifer 2. 0 . I cant talk about sourcing. I am not a representative of wikileaks. Lets not forget, the Mueller Investigation has closed. Theres no indictment associated with wikileaks. This indictment, the extradition request, relates to 2010 publications which is an entirely separate matter. To be clear, its not entirely closed, and congress can make their own judgments about it, but you are right that muellers part in that investigation is done for now. How will you fight extradition to the u. S. As he faces these charges . What will your argument be . Were not going to disclose our arguments already, but we will of course be raising free speech concerns. Well be raising the politatizization of the case. Do you believe hell receive fair treatment in the u. S. . This has been highly publicized. We had key political figures dating back to 2010 when the publications first came about and the criminal investigation was open. High level figures in the u. S. Calling for him to be killed by drone strike. This is a serious matter. So we are concerned about the prospect of a fair trial, and well be raising some of those queries here. Final question, President Donald Trump as a candidate praised wikileaks. He was asked about it this week, he said i dont know anything about them, but there were many comments during the election praising them. Do you consider President Trump an advocate of wikileaks, a fan of wikileaks . What we have seen since trump came to power has been a more aggressive approach toward wikileaks if anything. You mentioned mike pompeo said a hostile nonstate intelligence agency. Jeff sessions said it was a priority to prosecutor wikileaks. This is a far more open and aggressive stance than the Obama Administration ever took. So to suggest that trump or the Trump Administration is somehow a friend to wikileaks denies the facts of what is actually happening right now. Let me ask you a final question because the other legal issue were allegations of Sexual Assault by Julian Assange. These came from sweden. Those charges were let go in effect, in legal terms, although prosecutors in sweden are now considering a request from one of the accusers here. What is your response . What is Julian Assanges response to these allegations . We have always said that julian was very happy to answer those allegations. We offered his testimony in 2010 before the quest came. And his Swedish Defense counsel said he has a good defense. If he was ever required to go back and answer that, he has a defense, and he would be happy to. That case was dropped. That is not the case were dealing with at the moment. This case is and has always been about the risk of extradition to the United States. Thats why he sought asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy. And hes right, the moment he stepped occupant, he was served with the extradition request. Jennifer robinson, thanks for taking the time. Youre very welcome. Poppy. Quite an interview there. Great interview. Great to have the opportunity to answer those questions, and certainly a story well continue to follow. She wouldnt answer what their defense is here, but its a good question to try to get that answer. Whats their argument, and also about the president , like how many times did he say i love wikileaks . Is he a proponent when his own Justice Department now has charged against him. Fascinating. Great access. Thanks so much. Ahead for us, a key player in the huge College Admissions scandal is set to plead guilty today. D. Hes a harvard graduate. He was so good at this, he was able to get a score high enough to greatly improve students scores for College Admission but not too high to raise red flags. He served as a key cooperating witness in the governments investigation and played a key role in taking down many parents in exchange for taking responsibility, prosecutors are going to ask for less time. He was facing 20 years. So Felicity Huffmans daughter is one of these people who took the test under riedel, although Felicity Huffman in her apology said her daughter had no idea this was part of the scam. Hes a harvard grad. Smart guy. You have to think theres better stuff you can do with that intelligence. Everybody has their niche, i guess. The thing about him, singer, the mast mastermind, would tell parents what score do you need me to get, and he could do it. Crazy. Well see what he says today in court. Thanks for the reporting. Were learning kelly sadler, the Onetime White House Communications aide who left the administration after making light of the late senator john mccains battle with cancer, has a new job, and it has ties to the Trump Campaign. Kaitlan collins joins me with more. Not totally surprising given the president has not hesitated to criticize john mccain even after his pass. Sadler left the administration about a month after the remarks became public and now shes found a new job. Shes joining America First action. Its this political super pac helping with the president s reelection efforts. Shes joining as its communications director. She starts on monday. Youll recall, she left the white house not necessarily because of the remarks she made. Because the white house never apologized for those remarks and sadler never publicly commented on them either, though she did privately apologize to john mccains daughter, meghan. The white house after that went on this pretty intense hunt, poppy, for leakers. The president personally vowed to pursue it, and during one meeting in the oval office with sadl sadler, President Trump, and Mercedes Schlapp, another communications aide, sadler told the president she believed it was Mercedes Schlapp doing some of the leaking coming out of the west wing. She quietly left about a month later, and now shes joining this protrump group, and she told cnn in a statement that shes really excited, end quotes, to do everything she can to help reelect the president because she wants to see him for another four years in office. Poppy, shes not the first former Administration Official to go and join this group. Linda mcmahon, the Small Business administrator left and shes joining it as well. Shes expected to help with its fundraising. Really what this shows is even though there are people who sometimes leave the white house under unfavorable terms, they still usually typically remain in the president s orbit, as sadler is doing by joining this group. A judge has just sentenced samuel patent, the washington political consulant who helped steer foreign money to President Trumps inaugural campaign in that investigation of that, sentenced to probrasion without jail time this morning. Kara scannell joins me now. I think this is a name thats not familiar to a lot of people, so explain who he is, what these allegations were, and this sentence. Yeah, poppy. So sam patton was a political consulant here in d. C. He was working for a ukrainian oligarch, and he pleaded guilty last august for not registering as a foreign agent. Also as part of that plea, he admitted he used an american as a straw donor to steer this ukrainians money into the inauguration. He pleaded guilty. He immediately agreed to cooperate. Hes gotten only the second letter from the special counsels office saying he had provided substantial cooperation. The only other person to get that was michael flynn, and hes not been sentenced yet. So sam patten agreed to cooperate, met with them and other prosecutors at least nine times and was prepared to testify against Paul Manafort because they operated in the same circles, in the ukrainian circles. That was referred to the u. S. Attorneys office in washington. They have been leading this now. He gets the benefit of his cooperation, but all that cooperation still remains under seal because it relates to several ongoing investigations. Thats what prosecutors have said. We dont know the full nature and scope of his cooperation, but we do know its something that prosecutors valued very much in order to write this letter. Now, patten did speak at his sentencing today saying i behaved as though the law didnt apply to me, and that was wrong. He was sentenced by judge amy jackson. Were familiar with her from sentencing manafort. She said he was distinct from him, because manafort, while also being sentenced before her for not being a lobbyist, had committed a number of other crimes. She also gave patten credit for accepting responsibility, something she said doesnt happen every day in this courtroom, a slight nod to Paul Manafort who during his sentencing, she questioned whether he was sincere about that. This is only the first person in the Mueller Investigation to not face any jail time. So sam patten gets to leave today with the obligation of being under probation, providing Community Service and paying fines. Really interesting. Thank you for the update. We appreciate the reporting. Meantime, update on the case with jussie smollett. The city of chicago is now suing him, the actor, after he refused to pay for the cost of investigating his reported hate crime. Of course, officials said that was all a hoax. The lawsuit calls on smollett to reimburse the city 130,000. In january, he told police two men attacked him, yelled racist and homophobic slurs at him during the assault. Police say he staged the attack to help his career. All 16 of his charges were dropped last month with no explanation as to why. All right, thanks for being with me today.
