And he is even promoting a doctor who said, you dont have to wear a mask. Who said there is a cure for covid and dna from space aliens is being used in medicine. Watch. I just saw her on make a statement, a very respected doctor. She was not alone. She was making a statement about hydroxychloroquine with other doctors that swear by it. They think it is great. I happen to be a believer in hydroxychloroquine. I used it. I had no problem. I happen to be a believer. Many, many people agree with me. Again, study after study have disproven this and the nations leading Infectious Disease expert, dr. Fauci, rejected these claims this afternoon saying that we need to follow the science. Im very explicit and unambiguous when we say weve got to follow the science. If a study that is a good study comes out and shows efficacy and safety for hydroxychloroquine or any other drug that we do, if you do it in the right way, you accept the Scientific Data. But right now, today, the cumulative Scientific Data that has been put together and done over a number of different studies has shown no efficacy. All of this is happening today as weve learned that texas republican congressman Louie Gohmert was supposed to be on the plane to texas with President Trump today. But was not because he tested positive for coronavirus in a prescreening test at the white house just this morning. Well get so much more on that in a moment. But lets start with Kaitlan Collins at the white house. And what is going on with the misinformation continuing to come out of this white house . Reporter well, and despite being confronted with those bizarre claims that the doctor he promoted had made yesterday, the president continued to defend her toefd saying that he found her impressive, promoting and elevating the claims that she plead that she made in a video that facebook and twitter found so misleading they removed it from the platforms after it had been viewed millions of times. The president said he had no regrets about retweeting the doctor, Stella Immanuel saying that doctors use alien dna to make medicine. That is just touching the surface. And instead of citing dr. Fauci, instead the president is promoting what this misinformationspreading doctor has said and so it raises concerns about who is the president listening to as hes making these decision and whose opinion is he elevating. Sometimes the opinions in recent days conduct things he said about wearing a mask. So it is notable that he chose to do that as hes leaving for texas today. Hes going there. No covid related events on his schedule oven though yesterday texas, i believe, reported 8,000 new cases of coronavirus. And instead hes going to attend a fundraiser, make remarks on energy. But right now there is nothing covid related for him on the agenda. None what so ever. But as we reported hell be touring an oil rig this hour instead. Kaitlan, thank you. Also another member of congress has tested positive. This time a texas republican who has refused to wear a mask. Congressman Louie Gohmert tested positive this morning at the white house. He was supposed to accompany the president on his trip to texas. Lets go to manu raju on capitol hill with this news. And so, there are so many facets of this. Because we know congressman gohmert was part of the huge house hearing with bill barr yesterday and when you look at the video, as you have, you see gohmert just feet from bill barr, is bill barr now getting tested . Reporter yeah, were hearing that bill barr will get tested today. In fact he was spotted outside of the hearing room yesterday interacting with a maskless Louie Gohmert and they were walking next to each other and bill barr was also not wearing a mask. I could tell you that the news of him testing positive has raised alarms on capitol hill. It is not like where other members have tested positive because gohmert frequently interacted with members and does not maintain a social distance and does not wear a mask. Ive spent time in the house gallery watching him interact on the floor, talking to members, sitting down next to them and talking to them, not wearing a mask. And ive asked him about that too and he said to me, if i get the coronavirus, i will wear a mask. And he also said to me, i asked well, that doesnt make sense because Public Health experts say wir the mosque now because you might be asymptomatic and spread it unknowingly and he said im not but i keep being tested. I doan have it and so im not afraid of you. But if i get it,ly wear a mask and he didnt answer me the last time he got tested was. Now after he got tested this morning on the way to texas or he hoped to fly with the president , he had a prescreening before the flight and he turned out positive. He returned back to his office on capitol hill and did an interview with a texas Radio Station where he falsely blamed the wearing of a mask for getting the virus. Take a listen. I cant help but wonder if by keeping a mask on and keeping it in place that if i might have put some germs, some of the virus on to the mask and breathed it in. I dont know. But i got it. Well see what happens from here. But the reports of my demise are very premature. Reporter so, a lot to unpack there. But the cdc said they they dont say that wearing a mask is causing getting the disease. In fact, they say the opposite. That it is essential to preventing the spread and helpful to protecting yourself. So contradicting the science there. And he talked about wearing a mask, while he might wear a mask from time to time in Committee Proceedings because the rules require that on the floor of the house, not what he does. He does not wear a mask. Something in the halls he has not done and now a lot of members are concerned they may have been exposed. Brooke. Let me unpack with this with an md. Thank you. Cnn chief political analyst also with us gloria borger. Lets drive in on Louie Gohmert. Doctor, he finds out he has coronavirus and tells the staff in person and as you just heard in the sound bite, speculates he might have gotten the virus from wearing a mask. This is a sitting member of congress, dr. Gounder, your response. I have to say im a little confused of how that would work unless he had virus on his hands and he was mutting his hands under the mask to infect himself. Come on. I dont see how this could have happened. If hes wearing a mask, that should have been protective, not the cause of infection. Isnt this just irresponsible . Extraordinarily irresponsible to say this . I think it is extraordinary irresponsible. I think has endangered the health of his fellow members of congress as well as his staff. And i really do hope that this starts to change some of those minds, if not his, about wearing a mask. How is it, gloria, that lawmakers who the public has entrusted to make major decisions, right, to keep their own health and well being in check, cant even be trusted to follow Simple Health guidelines. Well, look at president of the United States. Whose still talking about hydroxychloroquine and who only recently decided that perhaps he ought to wear a mask. There are people in the congress who now see the mask as some kind of a cultural wedge issue and doan wear it as a result of that. It is almost a badge of honor not to wear a mask and i think that is what Louie Gohmert was before this. At this point, and listening to him is kind of laughable, i mean hes trying to spin his way out of how he got this virus and you cant do that. Do you think members of congress, as they head out to their constituents, head home and back to capitol hill, just quickly, do you think they should be tested before entering the capitol . I do. I think she should be tested. You both agree. You both agree. No, i just heard overwhelming yeses. Let me move on. Dr. Gounder, i want to move on. We have a respected group of medical experts warning that we could have quote, unquote hundreds of thousands of deaths in this country if we dont get this virus under control. You have dr. Deborah birx sounding the alarm by the yellow zone tates, they have a similar profile to where the red states are currently. Do you think the u. S. Is now in a worse place than where we were back in march and dr. Gounder, how do you get out of it. When she talks about yellow states shes saying these are states that are experiencing initial infection among the 20 somethings. So a lot of that goes undetected and unnoticed because they may not end up in the hospital the way Older Americans do. And so by the time this infiltrated the rest of the population, to Older Americans, and you see those hospital rates go up, which is what you have in the red states, it is too late. The cats is out of the bag. The virus has spread throughout the community. So if you want to contain, now is the time to clamp down and wear the mark and have shelt shelterinplace orders. And there was a revealing interview with the head of the cdc with regard to china and europe. So we all know that when the president of the United States defends his response to the pandemic, he is constantly touting his decision to sometime ago limit the travel from china. But when you hear the interview, dr. Robert redfield he admitted that the administration was slow to recognize the threat from europe. And he said specifically that that is where the large seeding came into the United States. Gloria, how big of a admission was this from the cdc . Well, it is a very large admission. And i think that dr. Redfield in admitting this is taking responsibility to a degree. Saying that perhaps they should have been faster in understanding that the spread wasnt only from china but from other places. I dont know whether he said that he that the cdc made a mistake, that it was the entire Health Community worldwide. But that is something that gets in the way of the president s narrative about blaming china. The president calls this the china virus. Is he going to call it the china european virus . And i have to say in the end, were the ones who now could no longer travel to europe because we have not gotten this virus under control. Not vice versa. That is right. We cant go. We know that the Trump Administration banned travelers, dr. Gounder, from europe on march 13th. But by march 15th Community Transmission was already widespread, according to this report with dr. Redfield. How much better in a position would the u. S. Be had the administration recognized the threat from europe earlier . So, brooke, the travel ban travel shut downs have not been shown to make a significant difference beyond delaying spraying of more than maybe a month or two. So youre talking about delay, not really preventing this. So, yes, we had a missed opportunity there. But at the same time, i think where we are now is we need to focus on testing, Contact Tracing and isolation and shelterinplace orders to get out of the current situation. Thank you both so much for all of that. President trump admitting that he still has not confronted russian president Vladimir Putin over the intelligence that russia may have paid the taliban to target u. S. And uk troops in afghanistan. Why is the commanderinchief refusing to address this. Plus the return of Major League Baseball and now another player has tested positive. Were asking could sports start outside of a protective bubble. And she quit her job to take care of her grandchildren after losing her 29yearold daughter to coronavirus. Shell join me live. The president of the United States, the commander in chief, the head of all of the armed forces in this nation, still has not confronted russian president Vladimir Putin over intelligence reports that russia may have paid taliban fighters to kill u. S. Troops in afghanistan. Not only does the president admit that he has not confronts putin but tries to claim that the intelligence is quote unquote fake news because as he said some people say so. You had a phone call with va Vladimir Putin on july 23rd. Did you bring up the issue. No that was a phone call to discuss other things and frankly that is an issue that many people said was fake news. Who said it was fake news. I think a lot of people. If you look at some of the wonderful folks from the bush administration, some of them, not any friends of mine, were saying that it is a fake issue. But a lot of people said it is a fake issue. There was a were talking about a Nuclear Proliferation which is a very big subject where they would like to do something and so would i. We did not discuss that, no. And you never discussed it with him. I have never discussed it with him, no. I have no problem with him. He claimed that the intelligence never reached his desk despite reports it was the Daily Briefings in the spring. And when asked about it again this morning he said this. If it were true, would you be very angry about it. I dont know why they would be doing it but if you tell me that theyre doing it, i will certainly take that under consideration. Lets talk this all over with sam vinograd, former member of the National Security council under president obama. So sam, good to have you. Hi. So here are the numbers. So we know that trump and putin has spoken over the time at least seven times in the past five months. So this is all since the intelligence about the alleged bounties was reportedly included in the president s daily brief. But again, trump never mentioned any of this to putin. Why do you think the president is so afraid to confront Vladimir Putin at the end of the day . Well, brooke, stop is one four letter word that President Trump has a very hard time saying, whether on the phone with Vladimir Putin. The only reasonable explanation for his failure to con front putin about attacks on american soldiers an our elections and cyberer attacks is because he doesnt want to risk oft raw sizing and putting Vladimir Putins election interference in jeopardy. Part of his Campaign Strategy is keeping Vladimir Putin happy and that is very worrisome. If he doesnt confront putin over the russian bounty payments, putin has no reason to stop and that puts american lives at direct risk. And any entry level Intelligence Analyst would tell you if President Trump doesnt stand up to putin when it comes to keeping americans safe, putin has no reason to take President Trump seriously on any other issue. Playing field is so uneven. Right. The leverage is just lost. As i mentioned, you work for the obama you worked for the Obama Administration and handled intelligence. Again, the president insisted in his interview that he does read the pdb and the intelligence never reached his desk because u. S. Intelligence, he said, quote unquote didnt think it was real. What is more essential for the commander in chief than protecting the lives of u. S. Service members. Thats my question. Well i cant think of any bigger priority than keeping americans safe. But weve seen President Trump consistently disregard or fail to digest intelligence on that issue. We have reported this was in the president ial Daily Briefing not to mention the fact that we took defensive measures for our troops overseas to protect them in light of the intelligence. Or look at Something Like covid19. Covid19 was reportedly consistently in the president s Daily Briefing and President Trump disregarded that intelligence and now 150,000 plus americans are dead. He has failed to integrate lifesaving intelligence into his policy decisions and into his foreign leader calls. I prepped more potus calls that i could count. Intelligence was provided to the president before every single foreign leader call. It was integrated into his talking points and it was key to his approach on a call. He disregards intelligence in the pdb and foreign leader call prep and in every single policy decision that he makes. And just to put a button on this, Adam Kinzinger said this is indeed disturbing and needs exposed and should lead to real consequences for russia. Sam vinograd, thank you very much. Good to see you. Here is a question. Can prosports really return outside of a protected bubble . Yet another republican who was supposed to join the president in texas today has tested positive for coronavirus. This time its wesley hunt. Hes a republican running for congress in texas. In a tweet hunt wrote, quote, this morning on the way to midland i tested positive for covid19. I immediately ran to the car and am driving back to houston. I remain asymptomatic and feel in perfect health. This, as we reported off the top of the show, congress pan Louie Gohmert tested positive today and he oftentimes is not seen wearing a mask. Only days into the baseball season and it is already up ended from the coronavirus oust break on the Miami Marlins and moments ago another marlin player tested positive amounting to 16 players, that is more than half of the teams roster and two coaches are infected. The rapid spread forces the league to postpone a number of games and pause all marlins games for now. So booth the mlb and the nfl elected not to play in a bubble like basketball and soccer and even before football, i should say 21 players tested positive since Training Camp a little over one week ago and now more than two dozen Football Players are opting out of the season entirely now. Joining me now dr. Isaac bogosh and investigator from the toronto General HospitalResearch Institute and also been advising nhl and mls players on covid. So thank you for being on with me. Lets talk baseball first. How could mlb, how do they get this back under control . It is going to be very challenging. Certainly as you point out, theyre not playing in a bubble. And while they might be able to control the environment on the field and in practice facilities and training facilities, the question what is happening in the other 20 hours of the day. Are players going out and about and getting infected in the community and then perhaps bringing it back . This is a very challenging scenario. So i think theyre going to have to contend this with moving forward in the season because they just cant control the environment that their players are in at all times of the day. So then you have the opposite end of the spectrum, you have the nba, theyve been in a bubble and had not a single positive test in over a week which is great news for them. So obviously youre seeing the difference between the leagues in the bubble and nba and mls and nhl versus mlb. Do you think a Sports League could work without a bubble . I think it is challenging in north america. We certainly know that sadly in the United States there is really a lot of infection going on and it is very tricky if youre not going to be performing your Sports League in a bubble, in the bubble, of course they test the players very frequently before they come into the bubble, when theyre in the bubble there is tight infection and control measures enacted to prevent any infection from being transmitted should it be riintroduced and to date the zp zpthere does not appear to be break downs in hockey or basketball or soccer. So those are effective mechanisms to conduct professional sports. I think that is right approach. What we know about life suns bubble, what would you say to other sports trying to pull this off without a bubble in the next couple of months . Well it is a couple of things. One is maybe they should reconsider the structure of the league. The second thing is we have to remember where people are getting this infection. And certainly if theyre not going to operate in a bubble type of scenario, they have to be very, very careful that the players and all of the otherance illary staff involved, that they dont get infected not in the training or game facility. So people have to stay close to home and really work between their home and the training facility. And that means no house parties, no going out to restaurants and bars. Really good Public Health measures, hygiene and putting a mask on in an indoor setting and staying close to home. No extracurricular activities. Doctor, thank you so much for all of your perspective. I appreciate it. We have more breaking news here. Hard hit florida hitting a new grim milestone reported 216 covid deaths in a day. This just into cnn, florida once again breaking the daily death record, reporting 216 covid related deaths yesterday. The republican governor of florida ron desantis has defended the aggressive reopening and pushing for schools to reopen in the fall. Also in florida, one mother is suffering as a result of the worst tragedy a parent could face, the death of your own child. Coronavirus took the life of her daughter earlier this month. Samantha diaz, known as sammy, who was a Health Care Worker and took care of other people including her three children but last month she felt ill and was hospitalized with covid and sammy died on july 10th, just nine day of what would have been her 30th birthday. And now her mother is left to take care of samanthas three children, two of whom got covid. A 16monthold and a 2 and a halfyearold and now the mother is with me now. Miss diaz, im so sorry for your loss. Thank you so much for being with me. First of all, how are you doing right now and how are sammys kids healthwise . Well, im doing okay as expected. I have three children to take care. So i have to be strong for them. But im empty inside. And the children are doing good. They the virus is out of their system. They seem to be doing okay. Theyre eating fine. Theyre sleeping fine. But missing their mother, of course. They see pictures and they know that is mommy. Lets talk about mommy. Lets talk about your daughter. And i appreciate, i know this is profoundly difficult for you but i appreciate you coming on to just share the story. So sammy was a medical assistant and she wanted to eventually become a nurse. She worked during the pandemic, she took on extra shifts. And so one day she calls you and says i have a scratchy throat, i think it is allergies, what happened next . How quickly did sammy decline . Very quickly. This was on a monday. By wednesday she was already running a temperature. She went and got tested on thursday, she found out that one of her coworkers had tested positive for the covid. Within a few days, she was she couldnt control her fever. Body ache. On tuesday, june 23rd, she ended up in the hospital because her oxygen level had gone underneath 90. It was at 83. And she was in the hospital, regular room for about a week and then she was put in icu and around july 1st she was put in icu, and everything went downhill from there. They tried everything to try to to better her. But everything they did was just impossible. The more they did, the more she was pulled away from us. And i know off the top you said youre feeling empty inside but im thinking about the two little ones who are ittybitties, but at the same time they have to know that their mom is gone. Like it is my understanding that they would cry because they miss their mother and then they were sick. But then yes. You couldnt hug them. No. I couldnt hug them. We had to double mask. I stayed in the bedroom with them most of the time. And they would cry. Runny nose, coughing and a lot of body ache and i just prayed for the best and i prayed to god to help me through this. And thank god he heard our prayers because we all are negative now and the children are doing fine. But it was a nightmare that i dont wish on anyone. On top of losing my daughter, having to go through this with my grandkids, babies. I hear one of them, i think. Yes. I cant even begin to imagine. So suddenly you lose your daughter, youre caring for her babies. And then on top of it all is your obviously needing to put food on the table for all of the little extra mouths. You, though, needed to quit your job as a house keeper because why . Well, because one, im scared to take them to day care because children are asymptomatic sometimes and im just afraid for them to bring something to us and my sammy didnt get away with this, but i mean we were lucky that we did and were still here. And i dont want anybody brought to me. Or my family. And i want to be able to be here for them because theyre babies. And it is just very scary out there. Anna, i read off the top, the new florida florida keeps breaking the daily record of the covid deaths and do you still believe sammy would be alive if florida has shut down. Most definitely, yes. She would still be alive if florida had not reopenedp we were not even in the first phase of this pandemic and look at numbers now. You know, of course, yes, i think she would still be here. Most definitely she would still be here. Anna dalia, i appreciate you being on. I appreciate you being so candid with your emotions and hopefully people who are watching you, especially in states like florida, do take care and take those extra precautions even if the government isnt telling them to. I want to point out if you are watching, if you are a generous sole and support the family you could do so donate at the gofundme page and find that link on cnn. Com. Miss diaz, thank you so much. Cnns Supreme Court analyst joins me to talk about the courts most junior Justice Brett kavanaugh. And, joan, of course we remember the storm of controversy in which he sort of came on the scene. How has he tried to resurrect his image on the bench . Good afternoon, brooke. Youre right that the last time we saw Brett Kavanaugh, he was angry, defiant. Hes trying to be just the opposite behind the scenes now, much more deferential, accommodating of his colleagues and accommodating of the parties. Weve seen a couple different patterns, one trying to strike a conciliatory posture with his colleagues, responding with alternatives and compromises. And then when he rules in cases, even when he rules against a litigant, he always wants to make sure hes showing some sort of regard. So hes striking a certain kind of softer cord compared to his hardhitting conservative colleagues. And finally a pattern that weve traced is how hes trying to avoid certain thorny topics. For example, on abortion and the President Trump documents case. Lets talk about the abortion ruling. This is extraordinary color youve got. And i was reading your reporting earlier this morning. We know the court rejected a louisiana law that required doctors at abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. And you learned that Justice Kavanaugh tried to find a way where they would not reject it so sort of overtly. Thats right. He actually wanted the court to sidestep the issue. Think of the backdrop here, brooke. Susan collins was pivotal in voting for him. The main republican senator said that he vowed to her that he would protect roe v. Wade. And Brett Kavanaugh was succeeding Justice Anthony kennedy, who was the critical fifth vote on abortion. So many people were watching to see what would the new Supreme Court do on abortion rights. What would Brett Kavanaugh do. And he made a pitch to his colleagues from midmarch to midapril as this case was under internal debate to say lets send the case back, lets send it back to a lower court for more factfinding on just how difficult it might be for physicians to meet this credentialing requirement. Now, a District Court judge had held a sixday trial on this and said this credentialing requirement is very tough. It will close abortion clinics in the state of louisiana. And it would impinge on a womans right to abortion. So, but he wanted an off ramp here. Turned out there were no takers among his colleagues for that off ramp. And what happened then instead is that the court ruled 54 with the fifth vote by chief Justice John Roberts with the liberals to strike down this louisiana law. And then, joan, what about the cases that involve trumps financial records . That was another one where he offered a possible way out. And in this situation it was the house case where the democraticled house committees were trying to subpoena President Trumps records from his accountant and longtime banks. And Brett Kavanaugh raised the possibility that this might fall under whats known as the political question doctrine that some cases are just simply so political between the branches of government that judges have no responsibility or authority to decide them. And he convinced his colleagues to actually ask for supplemental briefing on that question. But when that came in and when the justices looked seriously at it, again, there were no takers, and the justices actually ruled in the case and Brett Kavanaugh backed down there too. Its incredible detail everything that youre reporting out. I know for everyone listening and you want more, as we all want more, you can go to cnn. Com to read her new story. Well continue the conversation. For now, joan, thank you in washington d. C. Thank you, brooke. You got it. Let me ask you, mr. Bezos, does amazon ever access and use thirdparty seller data when making business decisions. And just a yes or no will suffice, so. I cant answer that question yes or no. What i can tell you is we have a policy against using sellerspecific data to aid our private label business. But i cant guarantee you that that policy has never been violated. You have access to the entirety of sellers pricing and inventory information, past, present, and future. And you dictate the participation of thirdparty sellers on your platform. So you can set the rules of the game for your competitors, but not actually follow those same rules for yourself. Do you think thats fair to the mom and pop thirdparty businesses who are trying to sell on your platform . Im very proud of what we have done for thirdparty sellers on this platform. Lets go straight to cnns danny. What has stood out for you so far . Reporter just to break down what you just heard there, brooke, amazon has thirdparty independent retailers that use their sites to sell their products. Amazon, of course, can see whos buying them and whats been sold. How are these Companies Like amazon and facebook and apple that run their own stores for their independent retailers, how are they using that data to then potentially quash those retailers, those competitors . Its been really interesting. This committee has been guttering details, internal details from these companies for months and the democrats are using this as an opportunity to release those documents. Representative jerry nadler asking Mark Zuckerberg about some emails he sent in 2012 about instagram. Facebook acquired instagram in 2012 and some internal emails had zuckerberg talking about maybe we should buy these. One more email is that in 2012 zuckerberg wrote we can always likely just buy any competitive startups but it would be a while before we can buy google. When he was asked about that in the committee today, he said he didnt remember sending that email but that it sounded like a joke. But that very much gets to the heart of this antitrust issue. Are these companies too big, are they just going to swallow up and trample on any competition . Brooke . Zuckerberg, someone whos been used to testifying in front of congress, i say in front of in the age of covid, obviously theyre doing it distanced. This is the first time jeff bezos has been in this sort of hot seat in front of members of congress. Donnie, thank you so much. Good to see you and good to be with all of you. Im brooke baldwin.
